On Exhibit Through April 11th: Maxfield Parrish: The Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Murals - This exhibition at The Bryan Museum in Galveston combines wealth, beauty, and high-stakes art theft. In 1912, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, heiress, scion, and founder of Manhattan’s Whitney Museum, commissioned American artist Maxfield Parrish to create a set of murals for her Long Island mansion’s art studio. Nearly ninety years later, two of the nine murals were stolen in a daring and sophisticated robbery. Thieves entered a West Hollywood art gallery through the roof, disabled motion sensors, and alarms, and cut two of the paintings from their frames. The two murals are still missing and the heist is on the FBI’s list of Top Ten International Art Crimes. The Bryan Museum’s exhibition is your only opportunity to see all nine murals together, at least in spirit - prints of the two missing murals will be on display. These murals are arguably the finest works Parrish ever created. Originally installed in the reception room of Whitney’s art studio, the large-scale paintings were created from 1914 to 1918. Parrish’s paintings convey a sense of magic through their imagined and idealized neo-classical imagery. Parrish’s popularity was staggering, with one in four American homes displaying his art during the first half of the 20th century. Jerry Jeff Walker

Saturday, April 20th (8pm)

The combination of sensitivity and vulnerability, road-worn adventure, and folk singer defiance that Jerry Jeff Walker has brought to Texas music is legendary. As he celebrates his 76th birthday and the 50th anniversary of “Mr. Bojangles,” his greatest musical milestone, Jerry Jeff is a little beat up but still ridin’ high. He is a weathered titan out of a Larry McMurtry novel, the “Sam the Lion” of Texas music. Get ready for a memorable evening, filled with heart-tugging ballads, spirited melodies, and down-home fun! Tickets are $75$110. Other upcoming performances are: • Saturday, April 27th (3pm and 8pm): “Spamalot” • May 4th (8pm): Johnny Mathis: The Voice of Romance Tour • Thursday, June 13th (8pm): “Kinky Boots” March 13th:

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market:

Springtime Is Coming To The Market

Where The Locals Eat:

Gino’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria By Terry Card

When tourists indulge in conversations, whether it is while shopping, or talking to a local in a bar, one of their questions often is – “where is a good place to eat?” Why? Because they know that if a local frequents a restaurant or café, the chances are higher that it will be an enjoyable experience. What is it that separates the locations where the locals eat from the rest of the establishments? One factor is that usually it is locally-owned and not part of a big chain. Another factor may be that the food is excellent and so is the service. But there is something else – something unique that really separates it from the crowd. In the case of Gino’s – it is the atmosphere. The warmth is strikingly evident even from outside, especially at night when the soft lights strung around each window, create an inviting feeling which makes you want to spend time inside enjoying great Italian food. And the feeling does not end outside. The owners, Luciano and Emanuele Minardi, and Emanuele’s sister Josie Walker, do not just provide friendly service, their customers are family. This is not surprising for those who know people from the old world. Restaurants and cafés are gathering places for friends and family to enjoy a meal and a drink. Conviviality reigns in small cities, towns and villages, when people finish work, and want to relax. For Luciano Minardi, who owned a bakery in Gela, a city of about 75,000 people on the beaches of southwestern Sicily, the progression from the island of Sicily to Galveston Island with its population of 50,000 surrounded by beaches, was a move that made him feel comfortable. Island time is more laid back, no matter where you live in the world. Once here, Luciano went back to what he knew – baking. In February 1975, he opened a bakery at 45th and Avenue S. The building the family rented was a 2500 square foot shell in which they had to install all the flooring, walls and ceiling, after adding electrical service, lighting and plumbing. Then, all the baking equipment had to be added and coordinated with the other kitchen facilities. While he worked to establish the bakery, his family was integrating into their new life in Galveston. Both his son and daughter went to Ball High. During high school and after graduating, both Emanuele and Josie helped their father in the bakery. Their business provided baked goods to markets like Arlan’s and many other restaurants, which then led in 1980 to adding sandwiches and then pizzas. Five years after opening the bakery, it was expanded to include a full pizzeria. Finally, in 2011, the opportunity to own their own building presented itself, and they moved their business from the rented building to their current building at 6124 Stewart Road on the northwest corner of Stewart Road and Grover Avenue, one block west of 61st. With the move, they decided to establish a full restaurant and pizzeria. The bakery was not included, since their customer base had been shrinking through competition from the big players like Wal-Mart, Kroger’s and Randall’s - conglomerates that had added baking sections to their stores over time. Instead, they concentrated on creating a restaurant that combined the flavor and warmth of the old world with the relaxed atmosphere of Galveston. Aside from feeling like you are part of the family, guests are treated to sizeable portions of great Italian food at good prices. Beer, wine, soft drinks, milk and iced tea are available to complete the meal. 14 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com

One of the owners is always there, the restaurant now being run essentially by Emanuele and Josie, but Papa frequently drops by to look in upon his two siblings, their restaurant, and to talk to the many patrons who are like his extended family. In other words, the family is there for their guests. There is no intermediary, who may not really care. They look after the restaurant personally. The majority of the patrons are local, but on average there is a surprising mix of tourists. About 30% of the guests on average, through word of mouth, have learned about Gino’s. All the pasta is homemade and the variety available is staggering. As well, their meals include six kinds of veal dinners, nine kinds of chicken, and five different shrimp dinners. They have a number of combo plates, sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. The list of desserts, which includes many old world recipes, will make your mouth water, even after a full meal. A different lunch menu at reduced prices is available 11am-3pm Monday through Friday. Pizza and dinners are delivered in town for free. They deliver as far away as Jamaica Beach and Sea Isle. For these locations, a delivery charge is added. Gino’s is open every day except Tuesday 11am-10pm. Call (409)762-6481 for delivery or other inquiries. Foodie Events Through March 12th (7am-7pm): Eat Pancakes for a Cause & IHOP Free Pancake Day - Join the fun at IHOP, 5224 Seawall Blvd., Galveston. Through IHOP Free Pancake Day on March 12th, select IHOP locations across the country will sell Shriners Hospital for Children® wall icons for $1 and $5 each. All proceeds go to providing medical treatment for patients nationwide. March 13th, 14th, April 10th, 11th (6pm): Ghost Tour and Dinner at Hotel Galvez - Do you believe in ghosts? Hotel Galvez & Spa offers a monthly “Dinner with the Ghosts.” During the tour, the hotel’s concierge guides participants through the ghostly past of the hotel followed by a three-course dinner in the Galvez Bar & Grill. Another crowd favorite at this fun family event is the Zydeco Dance Contest, and the competition will culminate with the crowning of the festival’s Zydeco Dance King or Dance Queen. In addition to being “crowned,” valuable prizes will be awarded to the winning King or Queen, as well as to winners in each category. The “Children’s Crawfish Eating Contest,” great

Book Signings This Month

Saturday, March 23rd (2-4pm): “Thirteen Rivers: The Last Voyage of La Belle” by Ruth Davis Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for author Ruth Davis with her book, “Thirteen Rivers: The Last Voyage of La Belle,” a historical novel based on the true saga of French explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and his colony. Upon discovering in 1682 that the Mississippi River emptied into the Gulf of Mexico, La Salle claimed for France the entire river valley and all of its tributaries, including a large portion of present-day Texas. He called his empire La Louisiane to honor reigning French monarch, King Louis XIV. This is the story of what became of the four ships, La Belle, Le Joly, l’Aimable and Le Saint-Francois which had left France in 1684 bound for La Louisiane with 280 people aboard. The novel chronicles the hurricanes, pirates in the Caribbean, shipwrecks, betrayals, revenge, Indian war parties, kidnapping and murder, all playing out on what is now the Texas Gulf coast. The cast of characters includes priests, soldiers, sailors, deserters, murderers and families including women and children, as well as Indian warriors and chiefs. At Rosenberg Library This Month:

Saturday, April 6th (2-4pm): “In the Heart of Texas But Not Yet at Home” by Barbara Ortwein” Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for returning author Barbara Ortwein with her book, “In the Heart of Texas But Not Yet at Home,” the second book in her series of historical novels covering the immigration of the Germans to Texas. In search of political and person freedom, self-determination, and their own land, thousands of Germans started to settle in the wilderness of Southwest Texas in the mid-1800’s. Among these settlers are the Hessians Karl Engelbach and his son Johann, forced to flee Germany in 1844. Though the work is difficult, the Germans do well at first. Aided by an unlikely alliance with the Comanches, they manage to tame parts of the Texas Hill Country. Their cities of Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Boerne and Comfort become centers of civilization and culture in the former wilderness. After secession of Texas and the onset of the Civil War, they were in danger of losing all they had worked for. Most of the settlers were Union supporters, a position which would initiate serious difficulties for their community. The thrilling continuation of her first novel, “Between Worlds, Never to Return,” this second installment continues the story of the Engelbachs and the integration of the Germans in Texas, and the great conflict that arose for them during the American Civil War.

2019 Galveston Reads Finishes Up:

The 2019 Galveston Reads Book choice is “No Apparent Distress: A Doctor’s Coming-of-Age on the Front Lines of American Medicine” by Rachel Pearson, MD. As described by the publisher, this book is a “brutally frank memoir about doctors and patients in a health care system that puts the poor at risk.” Their summary for the book is as follows: “In medical charts, the term “N.A.D.” (No Apparent Distress) is used for patients who appear stable. The phrase also aptly describes America’s medical system when it comes to treating the underprivileged. Medical students learn on the bodies of the poor—and the poor suffer from their mistakes.” Rachel Pearson confronted these harsh realities when she started medical school in Galveston, Texas. Pearson, herself from a working-class background, remains haunted by the suicide of a close friend, experiences firsthand the heartbreak of her own errors in a patient’s care, and witnesses the

ruinous effects of a hurricane on a Texas town’s medical system. In a free clinic where the motto is “All Are Welcome Here,” she learns how to practice medicine with love and tenacity amidst the raging injustices of a system that favors the rich and the white. “No Apparent Distress” is at once an indictment of American health care and a deeply moving tale of one doctor’s coming-of-age. At Galveston Arts Center This Month:

“Standard Tan” Opens March 9th

Galveston Arts Center presents a solo exhibition by Austin-based artist Brad Tucker opening Saturday, March 9th,6-9pm, with an artist talk beginning at 6:30pm. Tucker’s exhibition, “Standard Tan,” includes a collection of wood, fabric, and painted sculptural objects that explore color, texture, and language. Often mimicking tools and utilitarian objects, his work plays with the loose ends of craftsmanship at the border between painting and sculpture. Tucker’s experience as an artist, skateboarder, musician, and teacher reveals itself in his work through the use of abstracted shapes, text, and sound elements encountered in his daily life. This exhibition will remain on view through June 2nd, 2019. Also on view in the second-floor 1878 and Brown Foundation Galleries, New Orleans-based artist, musician, and puppeteer Miss Pussycat presents an installation of her puppets and their worlds for the exhibition “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat.” In GAC’s second-floor vault, Miss Pussycat’s partner Quintron presents one of his most notable inventions, the Drum Buddy. “DRUM BUDDY (Miss Pussycat Model)” is a one of a kind version of his light activated, analog synthesizer, installed to activate the unique acoustics of one of GAC’s historic vaults. These exhibitions will remain on view through April 21st, 2019. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am5pm, and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Spring Break Art Camps Tie in with Current Exhibition In conjunction with Galveston Arts Center’s current exhibition, “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat,” young artists will get the chance to create their own puppet theater production over Spring Break at this year’s PUPPETPALOOZA, a five-day art camp that meets for three hours a day in GAC’s studio classroom. Local youngsters and those visiting Galveston over the break can enroll now to participate from Monday-Friday, March 11th-15th. Two sessions are offered to

accommodate artists of different ages: one from 9am to 12 noon for artists in grades 1-3, and another from 1-4pm for artists in grades 4-8. Grade levels listed are suggestions, however the youngest campers must be at least 6 years old. Campers will enjoy an in-depth guided tour of the exhibition. They will then get to create their own production while learning and practicing storyboarding, creative writing, character design, kinetic sculpture, structural engineering, voice acting, set design, collaboration, and teamwork. On the last day of camp, the students will perform and record their puppet show for a live audience of their adoring fans. “Kids are natural puppeteers,” according to Miss Pussycat, the New Orleans-based artist and musician behind the exhibition, which includes over 50 homemade puppets, puppet theaters, videos, storyboards, photographs, and ceramics statues of puppets created for her complex, highly amusing puppet shows which she has been performing to live audiences in underground venues around the world for the past 20 years. She herself got started as a child in her youth ministry at the Southern Baptist Church of Antlers, Oklahoma, and will be back in Galveston later this March to do a special workshop with second grade students from Parker Elementary. The Spring Break PUPPETPALOOZA art camps will be taught by Nellie Cornett, local artists and art teacher at Satori School, and Cristal Aldrete, local ceramicist and art teacher at the Resource and Crisis Center and the Ronald McDonald House for GAC’s multi-site weekly outreach program Art for All.
