Barfield, Galveston’s Bathing Beauties Contest began in the summer of 1920 and marked the kick-off for tourist season each year. By 1928, the event, which had morphed into the “bathing girl revue,” had become so popular the Island’s population was said to have tripled during the event weekend. These island pageants were the beginning of what we know of today as the Miss Universe Pageant. The famed Galveston Bathing Beauties pageants ended in 1932 due in part to the Great Depression and were resurrected in 2009. All funds raised from this event will support the creation of a science laboratory complete with laboratory tables, Bunsen burners, glassware, and supplies. A laboratory allows students to design investigations, engage in scientific reasoning, manipulate equipment, record data, analyze results, and discuss their findings. “The Foreigner” by Larry Shue “The Foreigner”
is a fun, two-act comedy by American playwright Larry Shue. The story takes place in a fishing lodge in rural Tilghman County, Georgia where two Englishmen, Froggy and Charlie, arrive as guests. The shy Charlie agreed to accompany Froggy on the trip after his sick wife begged him to go. When people at the lodge try to talk to Charlie, he remains silent: he is terribly shy, depressed about his wife’s illness, and cannot find the words to reply. Froggy claims that Charlie cannot talk because he is a “foreigner” from an exotic country and does not understand English. Taking the explanation that he’s a non-English speaker as fact, the lodge’s guests quickly begin revealing their secrets, and Charlie soon discovers scandals amongst some of the residents of the lodge. Performance dates are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings May 12th-27th at 8pm. There will be two Sunday matinees May 14th and 21st at 2:30pm. Tickets are $25 for students and senior citizens and $30 for adults. Island ETC is located at 2317 Mechanic St., Galveston. The 43rd Annual Galveston Historic Home Tour Galveston His-
torical Foundation opens the doors to Galveston’s incredible architectural history through public tours of privately owned homes during its annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour held on May 6th, 7th, 13th, and 14th from 10am-6pm.
2017 Homes on Tour 1868 Charles and Susan Hurley House - 1328 Ball Homes Tour Cover House
Charles Hurley, commission merchant and former mayor of Galveston, owned this twostory Southern townhouse with Greek Revival features. Hurley and his family occupied the property until the late 1880’s. Heavily damaged during the 1900 storm, the house was rebuilt with an addition in 1910.
c1880 Alley House - 811 Broadway Galveston Historical Foundation relocated this vernacular two-room alley house from the 1100 block of Market St. to its current location in 2009. The side-gabled wood frame building represents a typical alley house prevalent in Galveston since the 1840’s. Saved from demolition by relocation, the City of Galveston designated the building a historic landmark in 2010. 1904 Bollinger House - 1601 Postoffice Grocery merchant Thomas Bollinger and his wife, Maggie, were the first residents of this twostory Victorian house. The couple rented the house for several years and then purchased the property in 1907. The building’s most prominent feature is a wrap-around double gallery porch that addresses its corner lot in Galveston’s historic East End neighborhood. 1905 James and Emma Davis House - 1915 Sealy James Jefferson Davis, former vice-president and general manager of the Galveston Wharves, commissioned Galveston architect George B. Stowe to design this two-story house with Colonial Revival influences for use as his family residence. Born and raised in Galveston, Stowe had one of the largest architectural offices in the state and was highly regarded as a leader in his profession. 1899 William and Ella Dugey House - 3007 Ave. P William Dugey commissioned this two-story side-hall Victorian townhouse that was completed in 1899 just before the 1900 storm. After substantial damage from the storm, he rebuilt it in 1901 and occupied it for a number of years. The large two-over-two windows on the principal façade open to a double gallery porch that faces north. Dugey was a cotton screwman who worked on the wharves compressing bales of cotton onto ocean-going vessels. 1916 Hans and Marguerite Guldmann House 1715 35th St. Dallas architectural firm C. D. Hill & Company designed this 5,500 square foot brick house for businessman and former Danish Consul, Hans Guldmann. Sitting on more than one acre, the two-story residence features both Mission and Craftsman design elements including a tile roof, wide overhanging eaves revealing exposed rafter tails, and a double gallery

supported by square columns.
1925 Joseph and Helen Swiff House - 1602 25th St. Russian immigrant Joseph Swiff commissioned Czechoslovakian architect Rudolph Mudrak to design this Mission-style house in 1925. The one-story hollow tile and brick building with a stucco finish contains ten rooms and nineteen closets, four of which were cedar lined. Swiff operated J. Swiff & Co., a cotton, bagging, and lumber business in Galveston. He maintained ownership of the property until 1970. 1926 Harry and Harriet Wetmore House 1606 25th St. Galveston harbor pilot Captain Harry Wetmore contracted with Johnson Brothers Construction Company to erect this red-brick, twostory Colonial Revival house during the summer of 1926. The property is noted by a prominent front entry supported by slender columns and a side elevation porte-cochere leading to a rear two-story garage and servant’s quarters. Wetmore came to Galveston in 1913 as a captain for the Morgan Steamship Lines. He and his family maintained ownership of the property until 1965. 1915 Henry Hildebrand House - 3624 Ave. R ½ Rehabilitation in Progress, 1st Weekend Only Henry Hildebrand purchased this twostory kit house from the Aladdin House Company in 1915. The property’s original insurance record notes that “The Fairmont” house pattern arrived in Galveston by train “ready to nail together.” Donated to GHF in 2015, and featured during the 2016 Historic Homes Tour, the recently completed rehabilitation of the house is supported through GHF’s Revolving Fund. The fund is a neighborhood revitalization initiative focused on rehabilitating vacant, endangered, and under-utilized historic buildings in Galveston. 1920 City National Bank Building - 2219 Market Rehabilitation in Progress, 2nd Weekend Only Chicago architects Weary & Alford designed this two-story Neoclassical stone building to house William L. Great Books for Mom By Gini Rainey
“The Secret Wife” by Gill Paul If you are a fan of Russian history and unrequited love, this book has your name all over it. “The Secret Wife” is a captivating romance between cavalry officer Dmitri Malama and Grand Duchess Tatiana, the second daughter of Russia’s last tsar, who first met in 1914. It also tells the story of Dmitri’s great-granddaughter, Kitty, who inherits his cabin in up-state New York and travels there from England to escape her cheating husband. Moving back and forth between Dmitri and Tatiana’s romance in revolutionary Russia and Kitty’s life as she attempts to restore the cabin and perhaps her marriage, this wonderfully researched novel gives an insight into the life and times of Russia in the early 20th century. Using her incredible and imaginative writing
skills, Paul weaves a history for truly believable characters because Tatiana and Demetri actually did exist, and perhaps Tatiana was not murdered along with the others of the Romanov family. The historical facts were so masterfully written right up to the murders that you are left with a sense of what might have been, if… “The Secret Wife” was beautifully and skillfully written and is one of the best historical books novels around. The characters are complex and the research was diligent and gives insight to the disappearance of the Romanov family. It is definitely worthy of a read. Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2016, Avon “If I’m Found” by Terri Blackstock Continuing the story of Casey Cox who is on the run because of a murder she didn’t commit and told from three points of view, this was a real page turner for me. Escaping her hideout in Shady Grove, Alabama, and heading west, Casey takes on a new identity and stays under the radar of smarmy and on-the-take cops who murdered her father. Finally finding someone she can trust, Casey begins to work with Dylan Roberts (a private investigator who

was hired to find her) to uncover the graft in the Shreveport, LA police force. This book covers everything from PTSD, child abuse, bad cops, false accusations, leaving on the lam all the way to a hint of romance and discovering God is in your corner. With great character development, a fast pace, and a whole lot of intrigue, this was one book I could not put down. This book came to me for review from the publisher and when I received it, I found it was the second in the Casey Cox series. I was a bit concerned that it might be difficult to pick up where the first book left off, but that was not the case. With the three main characters telling the backstory from each of their points of view, it didn’t take long for me to figure out the players and where they had come from. And, wouldn’t you know it? There was a major non-ending to this book! Am I going to read the next one in the series? Pretty darn sure I am. I think I’m also going to connect with the first one. I recommend that if you like a fastpaced, hard-to-put-down book, this is definitely one you really need to read. Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2017, Zondervan “A Lifetime of Coincidents” by Jack Tep What can I say? I love being contacted by publishers/agents to review books because it provides an opportunity for me to read something outside my normal genre and helps give their writers’ efforts a boost. This book might be an exception. Written by retired Jack Tep, this book is, in theory, about how his life experiences connect to greater events in history.

Most of this book’s content is made up of very short, random observations that are thinly and remotely tied to events or people that Mr. Tep feels share a connection to him or events in his personal life. Unfortunately, his rambling efforts tend to support the theory that you can obtain connectivity to something by working backwards from the facts. The irrelevancy of so many of the historical observations in relation to Mr. Teps’ experiences is evident in this short bit: “On my way home from work, I would often stop at the corner 7-Eleven and buy some candy for the kids. A short time later, Sammy Davis Jr. had a big hit, quite possibly the biggest of his long career, with ‘Candy Man.’” I’m not saying that his writings aren’t worthwhile. I’m just saying that perhaps the contents of this book would be better shared with Mr. Tep’s friends. I admire the courage of his convictions in that he took the time to write this down and have this book published. Rating: 2 of 5 – Copyright 2016, Xlibris

Raley Harold Raley tackles a diverse range of philosophical topics in his latest collection of essays “Points of Light.” Raley's trademark wit and brevity have earned him a loyal following as a columnist for the Galveston County Daily News. This collection of many of his newspaper articles offers up musings on everything from literary criticism, to early medicine on the Texas Frontier. Novelist and short story writer, linguist, philosopher, and professor, Harold C. Raley holds degrees (BA, MA, PhD) in English, Foreign Languages, Humanities, and Philosophy. Named Distinguished Professor, he has taught languages, literature, and philosophy in American and foreign universities. His publications include fourteen books of fiction, history, language, and philosophy, and approximately 150 articles and essays on wide-ranging topics in professional journals and newspapers. Saturday, May 20th (2-4pm) - “Not Quite Home: A Soldier’s Search for Belonging” by James B. Morgan There is a brotherhood, formed in the crucible of battle, which brooks no other path to membership. Created in the incapacitating fear of incoming fire that no training can ever simulate, those fraternal bonds are stronger than the blood that is shed to form them. James B. Morgan spent twenty-four years in service to his country, and his memoir examines being a soldier in a way that goes beyond life on the battlefield and peers into the souls of combat brotherhood. Morgan studies the mind of his soldiers using his own experiences as the thread that ties the narrative together. From feeling obligated to volunteer for deployment, to wondering about the families mourning the losses he caused, Morgan speaks plainly about why so many soldiers struggle to belong. James B. Morgan joined the Army as an enlisted soldier and retired twenty-four years later as a Lieutenant Colonel. He is blessed with excessive idealism, a strong sense of duty, and an overwhelming need to write.

book, “Galveston Seawall Chronicles” from The History Press and will be hosting several book signings and release parties this month. Along Galveston’s Gulf Coast runs a seventeen-foot-high, ten-mile-long protective barrier - a response to the nation’s all-time deadliest natural disaster. The seawall remains a stoic protector more than a century later, shielding the island from much more than physical destruction. As the foundation of Seawall Boulevard, this structure created an entirely new tourism industry that buoyed the city’s economy through war, the Great Depression, and hurricanes. Adapting to the cultural trends and political movements that defined the past century, the seawall represents the unbreakable spirit of Galveston’s resilient population and provides a fascinating glimpse into bygone times. Kimber Fountain grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast and was a frequent visitor to Galveston as a child and teen. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Dance from the University of Texas at Austin, she spent many years in Chicago before returning to Texas and making her present home on the island. Kimber has spent the past five years intently studying Galveston history within her work as a writer for several local publications and through her former position as an historical tour guide. She is currently the editor-in-chief and feature writer of “Galveston Monthly” magazine and serves as chairperson of the Arts and Historic Preservation Advisory Board to the Galveston City

Music
Brandon McDermott Band: Keeping It “Texas County” Real
Galveston favorite, Brandon McDermott Band will be playing around the island in the next few months. If you haven’t had the chance to hear them, this is a Red Dirt-kinda night that you will enjoy. We recently had the chance to speak with him about playing music, where his Texas country roots came from, and how life is going. Island Guide: Where are you from? How long have you been playing music on the island? Brandon: I am a good, ole-fashioned BOI. I was born and raised in Galveston and grew up in Jamaica Beach. I played my very first show on the island at the Old Quarter Acoustic Café. Island Guide: Who all is in the band and what do each play or contribute? Brandon: The Brandon McDermott Band just recently had a bit of a line-up change so there are some new guys in the band. I am playing with some great guys; they are talented, fun and hilarious. We are myself, Brandon McDermott - songwriter/vocals/ acoustic guitar, Nathan Taylor - lead guitar/vocals, Soloman Garcia - bass, and Brent Topa - drums. Island Guide: Your music is described by critics as “Texas Country/Red Dirt,” what does that mean to you? It’s such a widely used term these days that is used to describe a hugely-popular style, yet it is so varied across the industry. What does it mean to you personally? Brandon: Texas country to me is a more honest version of country music than the “country music” that is coming out of Nashville these days. It is less “poppy” and polished, and is more of a relatable singer-songwriter style of music, similar to the outlaw country of years ago. It’s the kind of music that feels perfectly at home in an old bar or dance hall, floating down the Guadalupe River, out on the boat in Galveston Bay, or driving down the highway. Island Guide: Describe a live show for someone who hasn’t had the honor of seeing you guys. Brandon: Our live show is very fun and energetic. I once heard Kevin Fowler, a great Texas country artist that we have had the privilege of playing with say, “Save the slow songs for the records,
and play the fun songs at the show.” That always stuck with me, so we like our shows and the music that we play to be fun, and to pair perfectly with an ice cold beer and a pair of boots…or sandals. Island Guide: How did you get started in music? Who were your influences? Brandon: I guess I didn’t really get started playing music until I was in college at Texas A&M in College Station. That was the first time that I really heard Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Roger Creager, and all of those guys. I fell in love with that Texas country sound the first time I heard it and it instantly became my favorite music. Playing along with those songs is what really got me into playing guitar and writing my own songs. My major influences were Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Roger Creager and all of those guys; but I also really liked the older guys too, like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings. Guy Clark is probably my favorite song writer of all. I also had some non-country influences too. I was a big fan of Blink 182 and Sublime. Island Guide: How has that influenced you now? Brandon: Almost all of the things I like to do just fit so perfectly with the Texas country sound. I love floating the river, hanging out at old dance halls, spending the day smoking a brisket, driving through the Texas Hill country, or being out on the bay. Heck, I even got married in the Luckenbach Dance Hall. Those things just mean so much to me, and they go so perfectly with my music. I mean, I doubt there are too many rap songs about Luckenbach, Texas (thank goodness). Island Guide: What has been the biggest challenge to overcome being a musician? Brandon: There are challenges in everything you do, and music is no different. I think one of the hardest parts is getting your foot in the door with regards to booking and things like that. Our band has an almost 100% rebooking rate, but it’s getting that first show that is always the hardest. Island Guide: You have quite a history of performing with some top acts in the industry

including Stoney LaRue, Kevin Fowler, Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, Josh Abbott Band, Aaron Watson, Dirty River Boys, Brandon Rhyder, Bri Bagwell, Honeybrowne, and even 90’s megastars Poison. What is it like to “play with the big boys?” Brandon: We have been really fortunate to get to share the stage with many of my favorite bands. I never dreamed when I started writing songs and playing music in college that I would get to play with the bands who were the reason I started playing music to begin with. It is so fun to be on the stage with the “big boys,” not only to get to meet all these guys and see their shows from backstage (which is really cool), but also to see all of the production and work that goes into putting on their shows. Island Guide: Tell us how the songwriting process happens. What influences you as a songwriter? Brandon: I guess it kinda changes all the time for me. Sometimes I just pick up my guitar and a song will come out. Other times I have some lyrics in my head and I have to spend a lot of time trying to turn it into a song that I am happy with. I have always found it a lot easier to write songs when you are feeling down and out. I guess that is why there are so many break-up songs out there. But I just got married and I am a pretty happy guy, so I have been writing songs about all kinds of stuff lately. Island Guide: Your first studio album titled “Mile Marker Zero” was described as “just like their live shows, which continue to leave the audience wanting more, the album is chock-full of fun, energetic songs that are guaranteed to make their listener have a good time. From good ol’ fashion party songs, to songs about relationships gone bad, this album has something for everyone.” Tell us about it. Brandon: We titled the album “Mile Marker Zero” because Galveston sits at Mile Marker Zero on I-45, and we definitely learned a lot about recording on that album. The songs were some of the songs that we had been playing live for awhile. The inspiration for the songs the album came from lots of places - hanging out at the Texas Hall of Fame
Dancehall and the Dixie Chicken while I was up at Texas A&M, getting dumped, moving back to Galveston, and all the things in between. It is a great mix of stories and songs covering basically, our lives. Island Guide: What is your favorite song to perform and why? Brandon: I think my favorite song that we are doing right now might be “That’s Rock ‘n Roll.” It is a fictional song that I wrote about all the things that you imagine could happen when you are in a band - the traveling, the fans, the drinking, and even getting to play Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Gold Top Les Paul guitar. Island Guide: Our questions that we ask everyone: What was the first album you remember purchasing? Brandon: Garth Brooks “No Fences”…that is still a really good album to me. Island Guide: What was your first concert? Brandon: The first concert I went to was Bush, Goo Goo Dolls, and No Doubt. I was in high school and the show was at the Summit in Houston. It was awesome. Island Guide: 10 years from now, what would you like to be doing? Brandon: Singing a song on stage with Willie Nelson…who in 10 years will be 94, I think….and still rocking in that Willie way. Island Guide: If you could open up for any band right now, who would it be? Brandon: I would love to open up for Willie. That would just be a dream come true. Robert Earl Keen would be super cool too. I mean, we’re both Aggies, it could happen right? Island Guide: Anyone you want to thank or acknowledge? Brandon: Sure. I’d love to thank my band – Nathan, Soloman, and Brent for making us sound awesome; my wife Kira and my parents Ralph and Peggy for all of their constant support; and everyone that comes out to see our shows. Brandon McDermott Band can be found at brandonmcdermottband.com and www.facebook.com/brandonmcdermottband. The Sound Bar:
Offering a Unique Nightlife Experience in Galveston By Terry Card
How is it possible to stay in business in Galveston with so many bars and restaurants? It is easy when you recognize that The Sound Bar is the only dedicated Karaoke bar in town. There are others that have a karaoke night here and there, but The Sound Bar is the only one that has karaoke every single night! The Sound Bar opened on October 5th, 2016 and has become popular with its customers ever since the doors opened. The owner, John Timothy, was enthusiastic about the cooperation and reception given to him by the City of Galveston. Like many new entrepreneurs, he had to selffinance in order to get his operation going. After being a bar manager for seven years at the Third Coast, it was a natural fit for John to start a bar business. From his time spent writing articles about Galveston nightlife for a local magazine and managing a bar, getting to know other bar managers and owners, he realized that the one bar Galveston did not have was a karaoke bar. And it has proven to be a smart decision. It is very popular with a diverse group of people who are just out to have fun. As John says, “There are no tears in my bar.” What especially intrigues him is the degree of diversity. His customer base splits very evenly between tourists and locals and is also a 50/50 split between younger and older patrons. The only disparity occurs in the split between male and female. He can only put it down to his observation that women must like to sing more than men. The result is a 75/25 split of female customers to male customers. The atmosphere is convivial when people sing and very non-judgmental. This induces not only people with great voices to stand on stage, but even gives those who were not blessed with wonderful voices to belt out the songs in their hearts and have a great time! Located on the south side of Mechanic between 24th and 25th, the location really just happened for him. The building was not on the market, but knowing the type of bar he was trying to create and the space he would need to make it happen, he came to an agreement with the owner that if he would make the building available, John would renovate the space. And change it he did: rebuilding the back and side walls, putting on a new roof and a new ceiling, redoing all the plumbing and electrical, building the bar, and creating an outside patio. This was all before the decorating took place. John wanted his bar to be Downtown. He loves Downtown Galveston. It is part of his life destination. An unrealized bonus was that the bar is located inside the gates for Dickens on The Strand and Mardi Gras. The revelers at these events, both locals and tourists, once they have paid to be inside the gates where all the parades and bands are performing, tend to wander from bar to bar and restaurant to restaurant during the full day and night as the events unfold. This brings new people to his venue, resulting in many repeat visits.

Also, the location is within easy walking distance of the Strand with all its bars, restaurants, and boutiques; and Postoffice, with its art galleries and coffee shops. Not only does The Sound Bar have great karaoke shows, but as John puts it, “I am really lucky to have a rock star staff. They are comrades in arms.” A quick perusal of comments on Facebook and Yelp confirm the enthusiasm that customers have for the service they enjoy courtesy of his “rock stars.” His customers also appreciate the effort he makes to keep his prices as low as possible. He serves draft beer including local craft beer from Galveston Island Brewery. Happy hour is from 4-8pm. The Sound Bar makes great use of its outdoor patio for people who want to smoke. The bar itself is non-smoking, so this accommodates all people wanting to have a night of fun. Hosting parties and special events is a growing part of the business. He has the space and the layout to hold large gatherings, while still being able to serve other patrons and regulars who are not part of the event. The bar is very clean, and karaoke is a great attraction, providing entertainment both during and after the party or special event. In the last short while, he has hosted a 50th Anniversary and a 70th Birthday party, all the while his younger crowd enjoyed a regular night, intermingling with the older crowd, enjoying their special party. There is no charge for hosting special events, and The Sound Bar will provide food if requested, or the event organizers can supply their own. Corporations are also beginning to recognize that this is a great venue for hosting events. Recent companies who have hosted parties here include MLSBC Carnival Cruise Lines and Verizon who hosted a sit down dinner from 6-8pm, after which the bar was opened for regular business. John said that 80% of his business is from 8pm-2am, so this one-off event did not interfere with his regular business. John was born 36 years ago in Bastrop, Louisiana, which is located about 40 miles north of Monroe, Louisiana. He left when he was only three, moving to Texas with his family who worked in the oil business. Like many, he accidently found his calling while putting himself through college working as a bartender. He took to the life and has never looked back. The opening of The Sound Bar is the fulfillment of his life-long dream. Karaoke allows John’s customers to enjoy themselves in a welcoming environment, and he couldn’t be happier! The Sound Bar is located at 2411 Mechanic and is open daily, 4pm-2am. Karaoke starts everyday at 9pm. Happy Hour regularly is 4-8pm, but on Sunday Happy Hour is 2-6pm.
