Galveston Historical Foundation Announces 45th Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour Galveston Historical Foundation opens the doors to Galveston’s incredible architectural history through public tours of privately-owned homes during its annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour. Tours will be held on May 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th from 10am- 6pm. Tickets are available online at galvestonhistory.org for non-members at $30 until May 3rd, and then for $35 until May 12th. Members of Galveston Historical Foundation can purchase specially priced $25 tickets by calling (409)765-3405 or by visiting any of GHF’s retail locations. “Our annual Historic Homes Tour highlights some of the best preservation projects on the island. This year we recognize more than forty-five years of preserving historic Galveston,” explains Dwayne Jones, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Executive Director. “There are few places in the country that have our quality and supply of historic properties. It’s what makes the island unique and a treasure for all who visit. Come help put more of the island into use and save your own small piece of history.”

2019 Homes on Tour

August Roemer Tenant House, built 1873: 1416 Sealy August Roemer built this one-and-one-halfstory Gulf Coast cottage with triple dormers in 1873 for use as rental property. The center-hall house features a notable entry with double doors and transom, turned balusters, and square porch columns. Roemer sold the house in 1879 to Julius and Elizabeth Ruhl, who used it as tenant property and a residence for extended family. James and Amelia Byrnes House, built c.1881: Rehabilitation in Progress House: 2113 Ball Street In 1883, paving and roofing contractor James Byrnes purchased this lot with an existing building. Byrnes “improved” the house in 1884, 1885, 1886 and 1895. Located adjacent to Galveston’s business district, the Byrnes House was used as an example of urban decay in 1969 during a city referendum on urban renewal. The current owners purchased the house in 2013 and began rehabilitation of the property. Conrad and Henrike Lenz House, built 1887: 1807 Avenue L Conrad Lenz built this center-hall, side-gable house with double dormers for use as his family residence. He and his wife, Henrike Pruessner, both emigrated from Germany to Galveston where

they were married at First Lutheran Church. Lenz, a butcher, operated a shop and smokehouse next door, on the corner of 18th Street. Allen and Lulu Cameron House, built 1891: 1126 Church Street English born architect Henry Collier Cooke of the firm Bourgeois Nitchner & Cooke designed this two-story Victorian house for merchant Allen Cameron and his new bride, Lulu Aschoff. The house boasts an asymmetrical façade with double wrap-around galleries separated by a patterned shingle skirt, a decorative balustrade, and a widow’s walk. Cooke trained as an architect in England and Italy before he arrived in Galveston in 1891. Lucas Terrace, built 1901-1908: 1407 Broadway Brick mason and English immigrant Thomas Lucas erected this complex using salvaged bricks from his apartment building at 6th and Broadway destroyed by the 1900 Storm. Constructed between 1901 and 1908, Lucas Terrace features two connected gable-front three-story buildings. A courtyard separates the main buildings from two detached two-story servant’s quarters on the south part of the property. When completed, the apartments were advertised as being “superior” to all others in the city. Peter and Augusta Nielson House, built 1915: 1711 Rosenberg Avenue (25th Street) Peter Nielson, a Danish-born merchant tailor, built this two-story brick house with details inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement for use as his private residence. A year after construction, Nielson died suddenly. His widow, Augusta, maintained the residence until 1929, when she moved to Houston to live with family. Iocopo Niccolai Tenant House, built 1922: 2416 38th Street Italian immigrant carpenter, Iacopo Niccolai, relocated this five-room bungalow, along with eleven others, in March 1938. Originally on 15th Street, Niccolai concentrated the twelve properties within the 2400 block of 38th Street, which he called “Niccolai Subdivision.” Niccolai utilized the block as rental property until his death in 1947. Peter and Anna Serini House, built 1903, rebuilt 1923: 1810 Avenue N ½ Alexander McLellan, a Canadian immigrant and a foreman for Southwestern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company, moved to Galveston after the 1900 Storm. In 1902, he purchased this vacant lot, and in 1903 relocated an “old” house there. In 1913, Peter and Anna Serini purchased the property. The Serinis rebuilt the house in 1923, using

“part old material,” according to the property’s original 1903 insurance record.

Galveston’s vintage past meets present-day fun for the Eleventh Annual Galveston Island Beach Revue. Presented by Hotel Galvez & Spa® and held at Beach Central, 2102 Seawall Blvd., this year’s revue will be held on Friday, May 17th and Saturday, May 18th. The annual revue showcases vintage-inspired fun, headlined by the Bathing Beauties contest, next to Galveston’s historic shoreline. Admission is free to the revue, and complete information is available at galvestonbeachrevue.com. “It’s an exciting opportunity for GHF to be involved in Beach Revue this year,” explains Dwayne Jones, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Executive Director. “This event is a fun and inspirational time to revisit an old island tradition. It celebrates the beach and our tourism industry all with a nod to our fascinating history.” The Galveston Island Beach Revue was started in 2009, by Islander By Choice, LLC., in direct response to Hurricane Ike. It became one of Galveston Historical Foundation’s annual events in 2019. Dubbed the “Pageant of Pulchritude” by C.E. Barfield, Galveston’s Bathing Beauties Contest began in the summer of 1920 and marked the kick-off for tourist season each year. By 1928, the event, which had morphed into the “bathing girl revue,” had become so popular that the Island’s population was said to have tripled during the event weekend. These Island pageants were the beginning of what we know today as the Miss Universe Pageant. The famed Galveston Bathing Beauties pageants ended in 1932 due in part to the Great Depression, and were resurrected in 2009. The event’s location, held across from the Hotel Galvez & Spa®, is footsteps away from its original location in the early 1920s. Always a crowd favorite, the weekend’s main event is the Bathing Beauties Contest. Retro swimwear is chic and vintage is king as contestants from across the country catwalk while modeling vintage and vintage-inspired swimwear and accessories that echo the “good ole days” of Galveston’s summertime history. Classic pinup styles of the sort that Esther Williams, Marilyn Monroe, and Bettie Page made famous heat up the beaches as 30 contestants vie for cash prizes and top honors.

2019 Highlights Revue Prevue Kickoff at Hotel Galvez & Spa® Galveston’s iconic “Queen of the Gulf”, Hotel Galvez & Spa®, 2024 Seawall Blvd., opens its doors for a special night of curated music, craft beer, speakeasy-inspired cocktails and more as part of a Friday Night Revue Prevue on May 17th. This kickoff will feature the first public introductions of the 2019 Bathing Beauties at 6:30pm and is hosted by Dandy Wellington from 6-7:30pm. Admission is free and vintage attire is encouraged. Guests in their vintage best will be up for consideration to win a coveted Beach Revue winner’s sash for “Best Vintage Dressed.”

“The Lone Star Love Potion” on Stage at Island ETC Island ETC presents Texas-based humor with their production of “The Lone Star Love Potion” by Michael Parker, opening May 10th and running through May 25th. This show will conclude the 16th season for Island ETC. A wealthy Texas rancher named Edward Stancliffe has died, and many people have gathered for the reading of his will, including his long-suffering house staff and his last living relative. But upon arriving, the guests find that they have been left a love potion, which has effects not on the person who drinks it, but on others in the vicinity. Combine this potion with a major storm that forced the guests to stay in the Stancliffe mansion overnight, and the millions in inheritance money at stake, and hilarity is bound to ensue. This classic setup for a farce forces the audience to wonder how much the potion is actually working and how much is only a ruse. The hopping from room to room reaches a fever pitch before the startling and humorous conclusion is reached. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening at 8pm. Sunday matinees will be performed on May 12th and May 19th at

Bands & Bombshells Concerts The 11th Annual Galveston Island Beach Revue isn’t just great competitors and vintage cars. It’s also a stage for vintage and vintage-inspired music. Participating artists and musicians for 2019 include: • Swimwear Department - Swimwear Department’s songs are all inspired by their name. When the band shot its 2018 Tiny Desk Contest entry in a pool, NPR’s Marissa Lorusso called the Houston four-piece’s obsessive commitment to only writing songs about swimming holes and shopping malls “delightfully on-brand.” Their live shows feature crowd-sourced backing vocals and dance contests. Their debut album, “Turn Over! Go Under!” is peppered with moments of sincere nostalgia for bygone summer swims and cool mall strolls, reminding listeners that everything changes, but there’s always fun to be had. Learn more at swimweardepartment.band. • The Broken Spokes - Free Press Houston’s David Garrick sums it up with “There was a time when country music had less pop and a lot less sheen, reserved for honky-tonks and dancehalls. In today’s crowded music landscape, it’s become hard and harder to find traditional country acts, but Houston’s Broken Spokes are as traditional as the genre gets. Full of twangy guitars and honkytonk undertones, the five-piece makes the kind of country music that would make Johnny Cash and Hank Thompson proud.” Learn more at brokenspokesmusic.com. • Dandy Wellington - Inspired by the Big Band Era of Jazz, Dandy Wellington and his Band have taken the sounds of the 1930s and 40s and created a world of well-dressed music. With a passion for obscure songs steeped in the Jazz tradition, Dandy Wellington has assembled a catalog of music that evokes an atmosphere of class. From the golden age of cinema to the bounce of New Orleans, each song is hand selected and played to perfection by a band cut from the cloth of elegance. This year marks the fourth year of Dandy’s participation at the Galveston Island Beach Revue. Learn more at dandywellington.com. Beach Revue Whisker Review The fine folks with the Austin Facial Hair club know a thing or two when it comes to face follicles. They’re bringing their years of experience to this year’s event to host the new Beach Revue Whisker Review. Competitions will be held beginning at 3pm in Best Handlebar, Best Natural Dapper ‘Stache, and Best Barbell ‘Stache. Dress to impress and bring your best, and you just might find yourself going home with one of their coveted awards. Classic Auto Group Hot Rod & Classic Car Show Hot rods, rat rods, vintage trailers and more line up to take part in the Galveston Island Beach Hot Rod + Classic Car show on Saturday from 12 noon-5pm at Beach Central, 2102 Seawall Blvd. Admission is free for the general public to view the cars and is part of a full day of vintage-inspired programming. Car and trailer owners can register online at gavestonbeachrevue.com. Registration is limited to cars from 1975 or older. The day his father tried to teach him to drive a standard shift, the man had to cut the lesson short and return home for bed rest. Hear this along with other stories, including the one about the twirler who repeatedly injured herself with her own baton and the true account of why Jaston holds a lifelong grudge against potatoes. Known nationally as the co-author, co-star, and producer of the four award-winning plays in the Greater Tuna cycle, Jaston Williams is a writer, performer, and Grand favorite who will leave you in stitches! “We are located in the beautiful downtown historic district and carry an assortment of jewelry, rocks, crystals and other unique gift items!”

On Exhibit Through May 11th: Maxfield Parrish: The Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Murals - This exhibition at The Bryan Museum in Galveston combines wealth, beauty, and high-stakes art theft. In 1912, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, heiress, scion, and founder of Manhattan’s Whitney Museum, commissioned American artist Maxfield Parrish to create a set of murals for her Long Island mansion’s art studio. Nearly ninety years later, two of the nine murals were stolen in a daring and sophisticated robbery. Thieves entered a West Hollywood art gallery through the roof, disabled motion sensors and alarms, and cut two of the paintings from their frames. The two murals are still missing and the heist is on the FBI’s list of Top Ten International Art Crimes. The Bryan Museum’s exhibition is your only opportunity to see all nine murals together, at least in spirit - prints of the two missing murals will be on display. These murals are arguably the finest works Parrish ever created. Originally installed in the reception room of Whitney’s art studio, the large-scale paintings were created from 1914 to 1918. Parrish’s paintings convey a sense of magic through their imagined and idealized neo-classical imagery. Parrish’s popularity was staggering, with one in four American homes displaying his art during the first half of the 20th century. Opening June 14th: Patchwork History: Texas-Themed Quilts From the Winedale Quilt Collection - “Texas quiltmakers regularly honor the state by creating Texas-themed commemorative, patriotic, and family quilts,” said Kate Adams, quilt curator at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, Austin. The Bryan will feature select quilts from the Briscoe Center, including the award-winning “Captain Tom, A Tall Texan,” and two quilts from renowned quiltmaker Shirley Stevenson of Sherman, Texas.

Moving through areas like the soil, volcanoes, and bodies of water, pretend you are a rock on your own special journey through the rock cycle. Create a comic strip of your rocky story, or learn about the ABC’s of rocks and fossils.

Saturday, May 18th (2-4pm): “Texas Entertainers: Lone Stars in Profile” by Bartee Haile Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with returning author Bartee Haile and his newest book, a survey of the famous entertainers who came from Texas. In keeping with its reputation for size and spectacle, Texas has produced a staggering number of stars. Although many hailed from towns too small to have a post office, they occupied the spotlight on the largest of stages. Roger Miller's songs made him the “King of the Road,” and Howard Hughes stretched his vision across the skies of the silver screen. Gene Autry won fame as a singing cowboy and Van Cliburn wore a tuxedo to international piano competitions, but both hailed from the Lone Star State. Texans penned Old Yeller and voiced Daffy Duck. From Buddy Holly to Ginger Rogers and Joan Crawford to Jimmy Dean, Bartee Haile charts the brightest constellations of Texas entertainers. Bartee Haile is known for producing “This Week in Texas History,” a syndicated column found in many local newspapers. He has also written several other Texas histories including, “Murder Most Texan,” a true crime collection; and “Texas Depression-Era Desperadoes,” which focuses on Bonnie & Clyde and other notorious criminals of that period. Saturday, May 25th (2-4pm): “Tuesday Night Love Letters” by Gini Brown and Leslie Watts Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for local authors Gini Brown and Leslie Watts, with their new collection of stories from Galveston’s past. On Tuesday nights from June to August, Galveston’s Summer Beach Band presents free concerts featuring rousing marches and show tunes. Each program includes a short vignette of local “facts, fables, or fabulous fibs,” as interpreted by local authors Gini Brown and Leslie Watts.

These entertaining stories are not a history of Galveston in the strict sense, but the more entertaining “non-historical” history - the little stories of people and events - the tall tales, the gossip, the “didja hears” - as shared by local folk over back-alley fences, between doughnut shop stools, around cafeteria tables, at church socials, and family reunions. “Tuesday Night Love Letters” is a selection of favorite stories that Gini and Leslie have collected over the years, a few dozen short tales of Galveston history as many think it should be told - warm, witty, and memorable, if not always true. Gini Brown is also the author of “Galveston: Lore, Legends, & Downright Lies,” to which the current book may be considered a sequel. Gini and Leslie are both longtime residents of Galveston, and both are very active in the community. At Rosenberg Library This Month:

Red Light District Tour with Kimber Fountain, Author of “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line”

From the author of the book comes a wonderful tour and a riveting journey through the forgotten parts of Downtown Galveston that were once bustling with wild parties and generous offerings of hourly love. Join renowned author and speaker Kimber Fountain as she brings to life the tales - both tragic and triumphant - of Galveston’s historic Red Light District. Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family-friendly entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy of illegal liquor and gambling and an infamous red light district called simply, “The Line.” This unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came to life every night and remained a stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years. In the late 1950s, the era was known as the “Free State of Galveston” finally came to an end, and today, almost all that remains of its history has been sensationalized and marginalized. Galveston was more than just a city of “gangsters” and lewd women, and Kimber Fountain pursues the authentic, sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them. Tours are every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 7pm. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online at redlightdistricttoursofgalveston. com in advance or at the start of the tour (cash only). Reservations are required for cash/onsite tickets, and both online ticket purchases and cash reservations must be made by 5pm the day of the tour. The tour meets on the north steps of the old Galveston Post Office at 601 25th Street (corner of 25th and Church St.). Meet at the north steps located on Church Street side. Tours begin promptly at 7pm. Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes early to ensure ample time to park and/or purchase onsite tickets. Due to mature content, this tour is strongly recommended for adults and older teens only. Signed copies of Kimber’s books “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line” ($23.99) and “Galveston Seawall Chronicles” ($21.99) will be available for purchase (cash or credit) at the conclusion of the tour. For more info go to redlightdistricttoursofgalveston.com, email GalvestonRedLightTours@ gmail.com, call or text (409)526-6883.

Art

At Galveston Arts Center:

“Standard Tan” Continues

Galveston Arts Center continues to show a solo exhibition by Austin-based artist Brad Tucker, “Standard Tan,” which includes a collection of wood, fabric, and painted sculptural objects that explore color, texture, and language. Often mimicking tools and utilitarian objects, his work plays with the loose ends of craftsmanship at the border between painting and sculpture. Tucker’s experience as an artist, skateboarder, musician, and teacher reveals itself in his work through the use of abstracted shapes, text, and sound elements encountered in his daily life. This exhibition will remain on view through June 2nd, 2019. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am5pm, and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times. GAC is located at 2127 Strand St., Downtown Galveston. Events Conversations @ The Center features artists and arts professionals who speak about and show images of their work, practices, professions, or discuss timely issues in contemporary visual art. All events are free and open to the public. One remaining talk in this series is: • May 19th (2-3pm): Pete Gershon and Michael Tracy - Pete Gershon will speak about his book, “Collision: The Contemporary Art Scene in Houston, 1972–1985,” in conversation with artist Michael Tracy, who lived and worked in Galveston during the 1970s. Tracy’s performance, Sacrifice I, 9.13.74 (The Sugar), which took place in the Imperial Sugar Warehouse in 1974, is documented in the book. Art Club for Kids (Tuesdays, 4:15-5:45pm) Perfect for home-schoolers or after school, this mixed age art club centers on the student-directed exploration of drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. GAC instructors teach expressive arts practice, where kids use traditional art techniques to develop essential skills like intuitive reasoning, investigative play, and self-confidence. This program is designed for students in grades 3-9. Cost depends on how many sessions your child attends. Every Tuesday (Tuesdays, 6-8pm): Ceramic Studio - Learn hand-building techniques in pottery, figurative sculpture, and glazing with earthenware clay. This course uses ancient methods that don’t require a potter’s wheel, including coil construction and slab-construction. Students will learn how to securely join corners and handles, make lids fit properly, and various kinds of surface treatments, textures, and glazes. Fees are $50 for two sessions or $75 for four sessions. Join at any time! May 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th (5:30pm): Fiber Arts Studio - Explore the rich world of fiber art with Rachael Montemayor of Sheep and Hook Fiber. As sessions go on, participants will enjoy mixing techniques within a single item to add interest and texture, or incorporating unexpected elements that are recycled, found, or deconstructed. Anyone can join at any time. An abundant supply of hand-dyed natural wool roving, yarns, and other fibers are available through this program at GAC. Learn more about Rachael's work at sheepandhookfiber.com. May 4th (10am-4pm): Polymer Clay Workshop - Create a unique piece of jewelry by using the decorative polymer clay technique that mimics traditional Japanese Mokume Gane metalworking. In this all-day workshop, instructor Paula Kennedy will teach the technique and help students create a one of a kind piece to take home! This is for adults and teens ages 14 and up. Tuition is $75 and all materials are provided.

GAC Announces Summer Clay Camps with Visiting artist Pat Johnson Award-winning figurative ceramicist Pat Johnson is returning to Galveston for the fourth summer in a row to teach clay camps at Galveston Arts Center: from June 10th-14th, and again from July 8th-12th, both from 1-4pm, Monday-Friday. Camps last three hours each day, allowing students to delve deeply into a project over five days. Ms. Johnson’s week-long workshop lets students explore the design and production of handmade ceramic objects and tiles. Using stories and imagination as inspiration, students will create fun ceramic projects including usable pots and fanciful sculptures. Students will learn ancient ceramic methods such as pinch, slab and coil pots, rolling cylinders, altering shapes, and applying surface textures and colors. Camp tuition is $150 per child for early registration. Prices increase to $165 a week before each camp begins, so register early! Tuition includes all materials. Both camps are held at GAC’s recently remodeled, ADA-accessible facility on the corner of Strand and 22nd Street.
