Food A Stunning View of Heaven on Earth:

A View of The Gulf, The Downtown, The Bay Side of Galveston By Sissie Coomes When you are at the beach, you either want to be in the sun, shaded under awnings and patios looking at the beach, or enjoying a great day or evening looking out at the water - and sometimes, perhaps all of it. Galveston hosts a huge array of restaurants and bars with great views. From people watching on the beach to watching the sunset, or even the cruise ships coming and going, the water is where everyone seems to flock. Below is a list of a few restaurants and bars with fantastic views. Each one has something a little different to offer.

West End Restaurant and Sandbar

21706 Burnet Drive (Sea Isle subdivision), (409)497-4152, www.westendmarina.com West End Restaurant offers full service fine dining upstairs in the restaurant, and island casual dining (and drinking) downstairs in the Sandbar. It is located in the beautiful and secluded west end area, tucked away in the Sea Isle subdivision, overlooking Galveston Bay. The Sandbar is a cozy and covered, open-air patio that is never wanting for shade or a breeze. Relaxed and easy, The Sandbar is the place to grab a casual bite to eat, as well as to take a break from a day on the sand and water. Their fullservice bar includes a variety of beer and wine along with many house specialty drinks. Boiled crawfish, oysters on the half shell, burgers, lots of fried seafood and wings are on the menu. They offer daily drink and menu specials, a great happy hour, and a super casual atmosphere - what more could you ask for! Oh, a view! West End Restaurant and Sandbar is located on the canal/bay side of the west end of the island. Made all of wood with miles of decking, handmade tables, and located over the water surrounded by boats, boat docks and anything else you can think of concerning the boating lifestyle, The Sandbar has a great atmosphere and has the peaceful, slow pace of the West End, swaying and rocking to the beat of fun for all. Weekends at The Sandbar, the main event is music. The Sandbar has karaoke every Friday night and live music every Saturday, 7-11pm. Frequent patron Darien Allred said, “This is the best place to get a great steak and an extremely large

stuffed potato, plus a fantastic fruity mixed drink. The environment in the downstairs Sandbar is to die for. The view is fantastic. Oh, and did I mention you can launch your boat here, too? The boat launch is very deep, and they have a great bait and tackle shop as well.” Steak Night is every Monday, 5-9pm, in The Sandbar. They also have a fully stocked general store for all your grocery needs and offer a full service bait shop and marina, that is complete with 4 ton lifts, electric, water supply, and quality marine grade fuel. They are also an authorized distributor for YETI coolers and accessories. The Sandbar opens at 11am every day and is super casual. The West End Restaurant opens at 5pm and reservations are recommended, as well as appropriate dress. The Sandbar downstairs is dog friendly.

Olympia The Grill at Pier 21

100 21st Street, downtown Galveston, (409)765-0021 “Olympia Grill great food since 1500 B.C.!” Olympia The Grill at Pier 21 has won a host of awards: Winner of “Best Greek,” “Best Happy Hour,” and “Best Waterfront Dining” in the 2015 Galveston.com “Best of Galveston Awards.” So, it’s no surprise to the locals that this restaurant, unique in location and menu offerings, also has a fantastic patio overlooking the Harbor. From Galveston. com: “Larry and Tikie Kriticos were born and raised in Galveston, Texas. They are first-generation Greek Americans. Their father, Gus, came to Galveston from the Island of Patmos, Greece, and opened the Seawall Cafe on 17th Street (1946) in Galveston. Their mother Nora’s family came from Sparta, Greece. The Golden Greek Restaurant belonged to their Uncle Paul and Aunt Beaulah Santire. In other words, the pros at Olympia Grill come from a long line of great Greek Cooking, and have unparalleled experience in the restaurant industry. The chefs at Olympia Grill prepare fresh food daily and have family recipes that come from hundreds of years of experience. Features include seafood, Greek salads, gyros, lamb, and fine burgers.” Olympia is open every day for lunch and dinner and was recently named a Texas Monthly “Pick” for great food quality and service. Olympia The Grill at Pier 21 has a stunning view of the Port of Galveston with seating on a wraparound patio. With the fans creating a nice breeze, it is always a nice place to dine or have cocktails. Try Olympia’s chocolate martini or the cucumber mojito, you won’t be disappointed! “I’ve been to Olympia’s other location on Seawall before, and this one on Pier 21 is just as good if not better. They have a big menu with lots of variety, from seafood to burgers to vegetarian and Greek. A lot of the plates allow you to taste many different things which I love when trying new things. The menu has a big variety of many classic Greek specialties. There is something for everyone,” stated Darian Morris.

Olympia The Grill at Pier 21 is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm, and Friday- Saturday 11am-10pm.

Float

A swim up bar that overlooks the gulf? Yes, please! Located in the heart of the Seawall’s entertainment district, Float offers a swim up, pool-side bar perfect for cooling off from the sun, comfy seating overlooking the Seawall above the sidewalks on a second level and poolside, plus an inside bar with tables and open doors to help you relax. Whether you come in a swimsuit or your work clothes, there is a place for everyone to unwind. Float also features live bands throughout the year, a tropical drink menu and plenty of sunny fun. Float is open daily 11am-2am. Wednesday is College Night with $1 drafts 10pm-close.

A first stop might be Happy Coffee Shop on Broadway Boulevard at 51st Street. Proprietress Randy Abramson opened her doors in December 2012 with a menu promising “fresh coffee with a smile.” It has since become a favorite of many locals and regular visitors. The cozy shop showcases the handiwork of her carpenter husband, John Abramson, owner of Wood Solutions. In addition to daily selections of fresh brewed coffees, Randy offers Cuban and Americano coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, mochas, and more. Reflecting on her Cambodian heritage, Randy features a French Roast coffee and a menu of daily Cambodian foods for lunch, as well as baked goods, smoothies, and sandwiches. The Italian Grinder sandwich is celebrated by many patrons. Happy Coffee’s hours are 7:30am-6pm Monday-Friday, and 8:30am-5pm Saturday-Sunday.

MOD Coffeehouse

For the most venerable java destination on the island, MOD Coffeehouse at 2126 Postoffice Street is the place to be. The traditional décor and an artsy vibe blend perfectly with the historic downtown charm of the surrounding galleries and shops. Founded in 2001, the coffee mecca serves up a vast variety of beverages from locally roasted fair trade organic coffees to teas, smoothies and Italian sodas. Stirred in with top-notch beverages prepared by trained baristas is a blend of live music on the patio each Friday and Saturday, works by local artists rotated on the walls every six weeks in conjunction with ArtWalk, plus a selection of baked goods and desserts made from scratch. The coffee and espresso selection includes a rotating cast of seasonal flavors. Over the fall and winter months, customers enjoyed such offerings as pumpkin spice, gingerbread, white x-mas and peppermint lattes. For spring, the menu might include a lavender vanilla latte. Regular specialty lattes include almond joy, milky way, raspberry mocha, squirrel (hazelnut, toffeenut, amaretto, and vanilla), shamrock (white mocha with green mint) and more. For those who can’t decide when perusing the dozens of beverage

options on the menu, baristas recommend a specialty latte called “Just Trust Me.” “It’s different every time,” says Hanna Gonzales, who has served caffeine fiends at MOD for more than five years. “It’s the barista’s choice, so we can get creative with new flavors that are often not on the menu.” Gonzales is part of MOD’s leadership team and recently achieved Level 2 certification from the Barista Guild of America. “We’re always trying to elevate our game,” she says. “We all love working here because it’s a hub of the community. We especially like to work when it’s busy. There’s a good energy here.” Gonzales credits owner Holly Hopkins (who refers to herself as the cafe’s “steward”). “She’s always empowering us to stretch our wings,” Gonzales says. Finally, for those on the west end of the island, another great option is Sugar Bean Coffee and Cream, located at 11 Evia Main St. Owner Joceyln Sullivan opened the shop in 2007 in the new mixed-use Evia Subdivision being developed by Sullivan Brothers Builders (her husband Billy being one of said brothers). Naturally, the shop perfectly reflects the new urbanist feel of the community, which features pastel-hued homes in craftsman, Victorian, and classical designs with generous porches, palms, and flowering shrubs. The bright, airy shop’s porch looks out on a lake filled with waterfowl. The menu is varied with specialty coffee blends including Texas pecan, coconut mocha, sticky bun latte, cappuccino, frappes, and seasonal offerings. There is also a selection of teas, gelatos, ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, fresh baked cookies, muffins, and more. The location has gained a following among college students who enjoy the quiet space and free wi-fi. With beer and wine available, it is also a popular evening hangout. Whether you are wanting a caffeine buzz, just a place to hang out, or to meet up with friends and have a wonderful afternoon get together, Galveston offers a few great options for coffee junkies.

Island ETC Rocks The Who’s “Tommy”

Island ETC (East-End Theatre Company) continues its 13th season with the explosive rock and roll musical “The Who’s Tommy.” This hit musical, winner of five Tony Awards, is based on The Who’s iconic 1969 concept album written by guitarist Pete Townshend. The double album “Tommy” told an exhilarating story of hope, healing, and the human spirit. The telling of a full story on an album became known as a rock opera and influenced many later classic albums and eventually musicals. In 1993, Des Anuff and Pete Townshend created the stage version of this now famous story about a young boy (“Tommy”) who witnesses a terrible event that leaves him ‘blind, deaf, and dumb.’ His fortune changes when he discovers a pinball machine. Led by an inner vision, “Tommy” becomes a worldwide sensation as “The Pinball Wizard.” A few performances for this energetic, one-of-akind theatrical performance continue through April 2nd. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8pm. Tickets are $25 for students and senior citizens, and $30 for adults. Books Spring Has Sprung! By Gini Rainey

“The Last Anniversary” by Liane Moriarity

This author has fast become one of my favorites! I’ve read several of her novels and I must say that she doesn’t fall into the “if it works – use it to death” trap that so many novel writers seem to fall into. “The Last Anniversary” is set mostly on the fictitious island of Scribbly Gum, just off the coast of Sydney, Australia. The main plot revolves around the “Munro Baby Mystery” and the family dynamics that surround it. Ms. Moriarity has quite a talent when it comes to creating complex and unique characters that are also flawed, and this book is no exception. Although this book has an overwhelmingly large cast of characters, they are not only likable, but also believable, with each having their own particular brand of quirkiness. You might even find yourself getting some interesting looks inside the character’s heads because of the insight and stream of consciousness that Liane has definitely mastered. While there is enough romance to satisfy just about anyone, there is also a great deal of mystery that will hook you right in, making it difficult to put the book down. I think most readers will also be able to appreciate that the main character, Sophie, is still single (having never been married) at almost 40, but is still written as a charming, sought-after, attractive single woman, as opposed to coming off as desperate and down on men. Although Moriarity’s books are classified as “chicklit” they are definitely a cut above the standard fare for this genre. “Wildflowers of Terezin” by Robert Elmer

This particular story will take your breath away if you will allow yourself to become part of the characters world. This fictional, historical, Christian read will bring that horrible war and Steffen and Hanne’s incredible love story right into your home. Given the nature of the historical events in this novel, it’s almost a given that the story would be gripping and dramatic. Elmer doesn’t fail to deliver a gripping and dramatic story through his very engaging look at Denmark during WWII and the rescue of its Jews. The action in this book doesn’t wait to happen with the story opening on a showdown between Resistance and Germans, with Steffen caught in the crossfire. The festival will be held Thursday-Sunday, April 14th-17th on Pier 21 in Galveston, with scenic views of Galveston’s historic harbor. When Simply Shopping Makes a Difference!

By Terry Card First, let’s talk about “What is 1% To Conserve Galveston Island?” It is an avenue by which everyone can make a difference in keeping Galveston clean and beautiful! In fact, by committing to 1% Conserve when you want, and if you want, parents and children can improve the cleanliness and beauty over the entire island. Improving the environs for wildlife, plant diversity and public access to wildlife and plant life are a very important part of the overall program. Second, let’s discuss what is it not. It is not government alone, either local, State or Federal governments. The private sector plays the leading role, working in conjunction with government. Now, the fun part, how does it work? Business partners collect contributions from their customers to provide funding which is used by 1% To Conserve to help an owner conserve his private land and support private projects which provide public access to more conservation areas, or to help fund new projects that help beautify the island and are either created in conjunction with building projects such as hotels, or simply beautifying through tree planting and enhancing green space and wetlands throughout the city and on the island as a whole. Businesses that have partnered with the 1% To Conserve cause add an option for customers to contribute 1% of their bill. It is the customer who decides whether or not to contribute. Businesses and customers also have the option to make direct contributions to 1% To Conserve Galveston Island. As an example of how the money could be put to use, a well known private group on the island that is heavily involved in the conservation movement is Artist Boat. Having already purchased 367 acres from Marquette Galveston Investment Ltd. and creating the Coastal Heritage Preserve, they will need funding for future projects including habitat preservation, a launching platform for public kayak adventures, development of trails, boardwalks, viewing platforms and a building, integrated with the entire development. Knowing that further fundraising would be needed in the future, Karla Klay, the Executive Director and Founder of Artist Boat spent three years researching ways that the private sector and individuals could contribute to a cause of great importance to the island. Out of her research was born 1% To Conserve Galveston Island. What was needed was an entrepreneurial go-getter to lead the movement. That go-getter is Brenda Lee, an environmental engineer, who was hired as the Director of 1% To Conserve. Brenda was born in Sidney, N.Y. and comes from an entrepreneurial family. Her father and his brothers started and owned four restaurants in upstate New York with pooled money, a lot of hard work, and long hours. With that same drive, Brenda earned a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, and an MBA. Over many years with large oil corporations, she integrated oil projects into natural environments. This required great knowledge, and careful planning to ensure the viability of both. In 2002, she started her own environmental engineering company and has travelled throughout the world integrating many construction projects into the environment all over the U.S. and Canada, both onshore and offshore, in Central Asia, the British Isles, and Africa. Offshore in the U.S., she lived and worked on oil rigs, ensuring that during construction, the health of the Gulf of Mexico would be of paramount importance. However, at some point travelling all the time gets old, and while in Galveston, she met and married one of Galveston’s well known characters, George Lee, owner of G. Lee Gallery on Postoffice Street. They met at the Courtyard Café on Market Street eight years ago while George was playing a gig with his band, and after a zealous pursuit by George, they married. Looking to get into something related to her field, but in a new and different area, Brenda, a people person by her own admission, was selected to become the Director of 1% To Conserve, directly responsible for setting up the fund raising. The money that is collected is used to fund private projects that have been submitted to Brenda, who in turn submits projects she has vetted to the Board of Directors, which is made up of one-third Business Partners, one-third government resource managers, and one-third the community at large, including the City of Galveston, and Neighborhood Associations from all over the island. The Board makes the final decision on

whether the project merits funding. The framework of the projects the board considers could embrace everything from beach restoration and improvement, to butterfly gardens, reforestation, projected wetland development on non-buildable Hotel property, public education programs, birding platforms, and many other future private sector projects. A very important consideration for funding of private projects will be the sustainability of the projects to survive hurricanes. Equally important is tourism and fishing tourism. Annually, Galveston has 6 million visitors, who contribute approximately $650 million directly and $300 million indirectly to the Galveston economy. Unbelievably, there is $1 million spent on fishing licenses alone. Direct beneficiaries would include hotels, restaurants, and bars. Indirect beneficiaries would include the many businesses that provide rentals such as golf carts, Segways and the like, taxis and limousines, food stores, shop’s and many other Galveston businesses, small and large. The tourism in Galveston is erratic, very busy in summer and then dramatically slowing in winter, resulting in seasonal, rather than permanent jobs. This creates added expense for employers in training costs each year and does not provide career growth for employees. The hope is that by adding facilities in Galveston Island that cater to the public interest in wildlife and conservation, including fish conservation, the expansion of the tourist season can be used to create more stable employment for Galvestonians, while at the same time beautifying the island. The difficulties in creating these facilities is that the limited land is expensive. There is no direct city or county monetary support for public access to conservation areas or for public facilities like restrooms, signage, or education. The Galveston 1% To Conserve is modeled on 1% To Conserve in Crested Butte, Colorado. Its program has succeeded in raising $5 million and has purchased more than 5,000 acres to ensure that the view surrounding them is maintained and is a very important economic and lifestyle contributor to its citizens. Galveston, with its dependence on its beaches with the amazing views of the Gulf and the Bay, including sunrises and sunsets, create tourism, which is the lifeblood of the island. Galveston’s views have to be protected for economic and lifestyle benefits for islanders and their visitors, in the same manner as 1% To Conserve has done in Crested Butte, Colorado. April 10th - Galveston Ironman 70.3 - This early spring race is characterized by humid, windy conditions, though at this time of year, the scorching Texas heat is less of a factor. The surrounding area offers attractions for families, including the famous Moody Gardens with its pink, blue, and white glass pyramids housing a 10-story rainforest, and one of the world’s largest aquariums. If hot temperatures do make an appearance, the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark is a popular option. Athletes begin their day with a 1.2-mile, one-loop saltwater swim in Offats Bayou, staged at Moody Gardens’ Palm Beach Hotel. The 56-mile bike course takes cyclists on a one-loop ride along the Texas Gulf Coast, known for its gusty winds. “Chromatic Quixote” will be on exhibit starting April 16th. From the artist, Ron Gordon’s bio, “I am a coastal man and a southern storyteller. Raised on a rural farm, half our vacations took us to the Gulf. When I left for college my parents sold the homestead and began my Dad’s dream of managing

a resort motel on the Mississippi Coast. The Gulf has been an influence on my life in many ways, perhaps most evident in a pallet that most often calls me back. I am always experimenting with new mediums, techniques, ideas and composition. The result is not predictable and often the image continues through several states until issues are resolved. This is not a great process for producing since so much time and material are invested. The benefit however, is knowledge and sometimes, a very special piece of art. My works offered in the “Chromatic Quixote” collection are mostly of this nature. They are a distillery of thought and intuition, memory and risk. The outcomes of these explorations all too often are painted over or discarded; lessons learned. Some remain as milestones on the journey. Some become guide post.”

Thus, “Blood of the Air” becomes an environment to dramatize perception, itself. At its base, a pink mirror supported by sandbags is a makeshift landform, both containing us and transporting us, like a body. Above, air - given form as a large weather balloon - hovers overhead. The weather balloon is transcendence, alluding to Jean Piccard’s 1930’s high-altitude experiments with large plastic balloons and the infamous Roswell scapegoat. Katie Vida has created visual, textual, and sound collages composed on-site in Galveston and influenced by her time here. Within the sound work, a deconstructed radio drama is juxtaposed with recorded conversations, pop cultural detritus, as well as ambient field recordings from different locations throughout the island. The work intends to interrupt and deflect its own logic to be set free from narrative resolve.

These classes range through all the famous artists, teaching not only their style, but who they are. Most adults aren’t aware of the knowledge shared with these students.
