Galveston Island Brewing:

Part 2 & Getting Better All The Time By Terry Card

Everyone loves a success story! There is one Millennial in our midst who is the epitome of a success story. People may not recognize his name – Mark Dell’Osso – but they will most likely recognize the signature beer for which his craft brewery, Galveston Island Brewing, is gaining renown: TIKI Wheat. No more is it sold exclusively in the tap room of Galveston Island Brewing as it was on the day it opened in May 2014. It is now sold at more than 125 Texas outlets including many of your favorite bars and restaurants. And if you want to be able to enjoy TIKI Wheat and several other Galveston Island brews at home, they are sold in cans at an outlet near you. When Mark first made his dream come true on opening day, the brewery consisted of only two employees, 2.5 barrel tanks for production, plus “Waylon,” his 2.5 barrel experimental tank. He quickly added two-ten barrel, one to fifteen barrel, and one to twenty barrel tank, bringing production up to 80 barrels or 16,000 pints per month. Today, production is 300 barrels or 60,000 pints per month. The brewery now has fourteen tanks and fifteen employees. The larger tanks are special Bright Tanks that produce a clearer product. In addition, a new brew house was added in July 2016, which has allowed an increase of each batch size from 5 barrels to 20 barrels. This increases the number of pints produced per batch from 1,000 pints to 4,000 pints, all necessary to keep up with the phenomenal increase in demand over the past three years. As is often the case, success breeds success. When Mark first tried to obtain financial backing he was rejected at every turn - just a 29 year old with a dream and nothing else. So, with friends and family, he self-financed. Today, his expansion is funded by Galveston’s local Hometown Bank. Wanting to increase the choice of beer available, he has introduced new varieties of seasonal beer as well as an increase in stronger beer with higher alcohol content. The stronger beer takes longer to age, which the brewery is now able to do because of the increased capacity and the addition of the new brew house. Even though the brewery has expanded dramatically, the tap room in the bar at the brewery on Stewart Rd. still accounts for 25% of beer sales, with wholesale accounting for the remaining 75%. Of the wholesale product, 45% is now sold in cans and 30% by South Texas vendor outlets including many bars and restaurants. Wholesale product is limited to five beers - TIKI Wheat, Citra Mellow (Mark’s favorite), Blue Bridge Amber Ale, Causeway Kolsch, and depending on the time of year, one of the seasonal beers. The seasonal spring beer is Flip Flop, the summer beer is Hefen–A, and the autumn beer is Oktoberfest. The largest contract vendor Galveston Island Brewing has is unsurprisingly the Landry Group, owned by Tilman Fertitta, a man with close historical family ties to Galveston. His group accounts for 15% of vendor sales and his outlets include Willie G’s, Fish Tales, Fisherman’s Wharf, Saltgrass, and of course, Landry’s. The cans are distributed by Del Papa. Spec’s is the largest seller at this time, but Mark expects that they will be surpassed in the near future by his latest client, the H.E.B. grocery chain.

Shrimp & Stuff’s 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil Sponsored by Galveston Island Brewing Galveston Island Brewing is proud to host Shrimp & Stuff's 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil! Tickets are $50 for 10 pounds of crawfish in advance. Purchase pre-sale crawfish tickets in the tap room starting April 1st. Chairs and tables will be set up, but you might want to bring your own chair just in case. Music will be provided by Kevin Anthony and G-Town, and Bon Ton Mickey and The Zydeco Hot Steppers.

Mark has been gratified by the acceptance of not only his product, but of craft beer in general. Galveston Island Brewing has a wonderful relationship with its vendors. One that is mutually beneficial. The local craft brewing industry has a strong reputation that has been recognized by the traditional beer industry and local bars and restaurants. Even though Del Papa’s distribution of craft beer represents only 3% of sales, craft beer volume has doubled over the last short while. Kroger has just recently doubled their shelving space for craft beer, including both cans and bottles. Mark prefers cans because they block all light and they can be sealed 100% tight, unlike bottle caps, which by their nature, allow oxygen to get into the beer product, thus reducing its shelf life, taste, and freshness. In addition, cans are easier to handle and recycle. However, even with the tremendous expansion of vendor and can sales throughout South Texas, his tap room is still the most profitable. There are no middle men and no transportation costs. The tap room sales are also very important for brand recognition and connecting with customers. Vendor sales are the second most profitable. Future sales can increase because he still has room to expand at his present location. He believes he has room to add 3-4 additional tanks. One of the benefits of having Del Papa as his distributor is that not only have can sales boomed but keg sales have also benefited. Always thinking ahead, he is envisioning new brews utilizing aged whiskey barrels. Even though he is always looking at something new, his focus will remain on beer production, and therefore, he does not see expanding into food production. At present, he has a good relation with Maceo’s Spice & Imports who provide muffalettas and Italian Po-boys. In addition, there are snacks available. The tours of the brewery, which have been ongoing since inception, have proven to be increasingly popular. Perhaps it is because unlike tours at large breweries the tour is not conducted behind glass panels far from the production scene. They are up close and personal. Now three years into fulfilling his dream, Mark is very happy with his brain-child, to the point where he would not change anything. He is very gratified with the acceptance that his customers have for his beer, his brewery, and the tap room. Books Some Interesting Reads for April By Gini Rainey

“Dean and Me: A Love Story” by Jerry Lewis and Arthur Kaplan

If you’re a fan of comedy, or old movies, or celebrities, this book would make a pretty interesting read for you. Written in the first person, Jerry Lewis chronicles the life of one of the best comedy teams in history. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were definitely an unlikely couple, but together they created a comedy team that was unbeatable and riotously funny. This book is not only interesting from the standpoint of the Martin/Lewis success, but also provides a great insight to the post-World War II life and times in America. There’s also a seamier side of America –the mob - that has a portion of its curtain raised. In a pretty much tell-all style, Jerry Lewis tells how he and Dean met, created a one-of-a-kind comedy team, and rose through the ranks to become one of the biggest box office draws of the ‘50’s. And yes, this is a love story. While I personally have found myself not caring too much for the Lewis of later years, the open and honest way he talks about his relationship with Dean was raw and real. Without a doubt, the two of them had a deep love and respect for each other that transcended all of their professional aches and pains. Initially I was afraid this book would turn out to be the memoir of an egotistical braggart, but the humility with which Lewis writes is amazing. He had an incredibly high opinion of Martin and actually credits him with being the one of the two who had the comedic timing and talent. And, as hard as it might be to believe, Lewis was the one with the business savvy. What makes this book such an interesting read is Lewis’ honest insight into the relationship that he and Martin had. What a shame the team broke up. Separately they were good – very good, but together they were dynamite! Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2006 – Three Rivers Press

“Making Your Brain Hum: 12 Weeks to a Smarter You” by Joe Bates, MD

Operating under the age-old theory of “Use it – or lose it,” Dr. Bates, the Clinical Director at Rusk State Hospital, Rusk, Texas, has developed a program that can help maintain or increase the mental acuity of our brains as we age. In Chapter 2 of his book he states that, although this “program is in its infancy, seven out of eleven patients in the first basic class performed higher on the RBANS

(repeatable battery of neuropsychological assessment) as evidenced by pre- and post-training testing. One patient brought his score up from 72 to 97, an increase of 21 percent.” While not a book that you would purchase and sit down to read for enjoyment, this book can be a useful tool to begin using, no matter what your adult age. Dr. Bates says that although you can use this book on your own, sometimes the results are even more rewarding if used in a group setting where thought processes can be shared. Designed to be used over a 12-week period, each chapter contains a series of puzzles and brain teasers designed to give your brain a healthy workout. With the end result being an enhancement of your mental agility and endurance in addition to adding years to your cognitive life while having lots of fun in the process. Saturday, April 15th (2-4pm) - “Unaware: A Suspense Novel” by Susan P. Baker

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Susan P. Baker and her stand-alone mystery set in Galveston. Galveston attorney Dena Barlow Armstrong has outlined a future for herself and her children, independent of the controlling men in her life. Her husband Zack constantly pushes Dena to turn over her inheritance to him, while her law partner, and cousin Lucas, controls both her money and her career. Just as Dena begins to achieve her goal of independence, someone emerges with very different plans for her. Unaware of the danger she faces, Dena lives each day as a wife, mother, and attorney. Then one day, when her husband is out of town, the stranger lurks in her garage, waiting until she and the children go to bed... Born in Galveston, Susan P. Baker is the author of five novels, including “Ledbetter Street,” and two nonfiction books, including “Murdered Judges.” She served as a district court judge in Galveston from 1991 until her retirement in 2002.

The Arts Mary K. Farragher, Beta Gallery: Benevolence & Excellence Through Art Written and Photographed by Sharis Roe DeJaynes

New to Downtown Galveston in the Hutchings, Sealy & Co. historic building at 2328 Strand is the Beta Gallery and working studio owned by Mary K. Farragher. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mary and unearth her heartfelt story. Farragher is a lifelong artist. She had some learning difficulties when she was young, but was recognized as a very talented artist. Her teachers and professors pushed and encouraged her artistic talent. She entered art competitions as a young child, and started winning awards. That instilled her confidence even though she was lacking in other academic skills. In high school, she was awarded the Silver Key, a Scholastic Art Award, which yet again, reinforced her talent in art. Raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Farragher left Ohio for a while and moved to Orlando, Florida. There she worked as a performer for Disney for nearly 4 years. With the gumption to finish her degree, she moved back to Ohio to finish her BFA at Youngstown State University. There, she was very involved in activities and societies such as President of Student Art Association, Art Editor of “Penguin Review,” Presidential Mentor in Diversity, and on the Advisory Committee for McDonough Museum of Art. Once again, reaffirming that art was what was she was meant to do. She took a break from creating, then ultimately found her home in Galveston in 2012. In October of 2016, Farragher started her new venture, and Beta Gallery was born. After having shown in other galleries all her life and most recently here in Galveston, it was time, and she took the passionate leap. Noticing that many of her works incorporate maps, I asked her to explain where the maps concept originates from. Farragher mused, “I’ve been fascinated with maps for 10-15 years or so and finally analyzed why I was doing that. Micro versus macro, perception, communication and identity is what it comes down to. They all roll into one.” Describing one of her paintings, she went on to say, “Macro is the map itself, and the micro is the surface treatment made of organisms found in saltwater and sand. Then there is this webbing that goes around it – water webbing. If you look at water under a microscope on the molecular level, a web starts to emerge. I have adopted that webbing as a symbol of community and working together.” Speaking of another painting in her “Outer

Customers can order masterpieces from their vacation photos, a simple sketch, or just an idea, or they can choose from one of a plethora of already-produced works at the gallery that include abstracts, old master renditions, mosaic impressionism, realism, and a few other creative art styles and genres. Along with many Galveston landmark prints, 4x4 Italian marble coasters for the smaller nooks in your home are available. Q2 Gallery (2209 Postoffice St., Downtown Galveston, (409)256-0762) Through Joey Quiroga’s eye for detail and his recognition of other artists, this little space is blossoming with new works! Check out Joey’s abstracts that complement his ‘painted photography.’ Rose West’s small pieces, her seashells with beautiful detail, along with her paintings, give a variety from which to choose. She has added coastal birds to her repertoire, and you’ll love them. Victoria Tebo’s Summer Breezes continues with her focus on what she loves, blossoms, birds, and bees. One must visit often to keep current as the Gallery is becoming popular with locals and visitors alike. René Wiley Gallery (2128 Postoffice St., (409)7509077, renewileyart.com) The René Wiley Gallery's newest exhibition opens for ArtWalk, April 22nd. The Strand Gallery (2418 Strand St., (409)220-1777) Strand Gallery strives to provide the Galveston public with the beautiful art that everyone wants to see, at a reasonable price that won't break the bank. Special pieces featured this month include sea glass jewelry handmade by Caitlyn Toney, with glass found on local beaches, new 'flavors' of Victoria Tebo's Island Blend Sugar Scrub (now in lavender, grapefruit, and lemongrass), and the all-new line of acrylic abstract paintings by Joey Quiroga. Tyler Studio (1201 Postoffice St., (409)771-8371, tylerstudio.org) The featured artist for Loretta Trevino. “Vivid colors set the tone for her sublime works. Art speaks to the soul. What I love most about original works is you get to see the brush strokes and feel the energy put forth in the piece. We hope to have a revolving grouping of houses, filling them in with more as they sell. Keeping the neighborhood ever evolving.”

Project SIT Update:

Project Complete! Update: Project SIT is complete! 70 benches atop Galveston’s seawall are now adorned with ceramic tile murals created by a vast array of artists, sponsored by many, and dedicated to many. At the city council meeting held on February, 23rd, Artist Boat received a Proclamation from the City of Galveston commemorating the significant partnership between the City and Artist Boat on the project. The City also proclaimed March 4th, 2017, as “Project SIT/Seawall Interpretive Trail Day.” On March 4th, Artist Boat unveiled the newly completed benches along with Commissioner Giusti, Commissioner Clark, Councilwoman Tarlton-Shannon, Kelly de Schaun - Executive Director of Galveston Island Park Board, and Karla Klay - Executive Director of Artist Boat, and many of the participating artists. Following is the entire list of the bench locations, artists, and dedicatees of all the benches.

About Project S.I.T.

At 10.3 miles long, the pavement atop the Galveston Seawall is said to be the longest continuous sidewalk in the United States. With all that leg power being expended, planners included plenty of benches along the way for people to take a break while counting the waves rolling in or watch the people pass by. When the executive director of Artist Boat looked at the benches, however, she saw an opportunity to create an eye-catching public education project. Karla Klay founded the non-profit organization in 2003 to combine her passions for art and the coastal environment. It was only natural that Klay saw a blank canvas where she might artistically spread her ecology message to more people while they enjoy the seaside. “They were just ugly benches. Some were painted previously, but paint doesn’t hold up well in the sea salt environment.” Artist Boat is dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the disciplines science and the arts. For more info on Project SIT, contact Artist Boat, 2627 Avenue O, (409)770-0722 or go to artistboat.org. Music “Tex” Renner: Texas Personified Written and Photographed by Sharis Roe DeJaynes

On any given Tuesday, between the hours of 10am and 1pm, you’ll hear beautiful baritone vocals, guitar, and harmonica emanating from Oasis Juice Bar & Market on 25th St. His name is Tex Renner, aka John Stanley Renner. Intrigued, I stopped in for a listen, and Tex was kind enough to sit down with me after his set and tell his story. Island Guide: How did your name “Tex” come about? Tex: It happened a few years ago when I got on Facebook. I didn’t realize how many John Renners there were in the world. So, to be unique and stand out a bit, I decided “Tex” was fitting. That has since become my stage name, and bonus, it has helped me get gigs! Island Guide: Take us back in time and tell us about you. Tex: I was born and raised in Houston. Went to Spring Branch High School and graduated in 1972. From there, I joined the Navy. I wanted to be a paint chipper, deck hand, and see the world. I took the test and they assigned me to a desk, rather. I was first stationed in San Joaquin Valley, California. It was horribly humid, even worse than Houston, and I hated it. Me and the Navy didn’t get along too well. I left the Navy early, though with honorable discharge and benefits. After the Navy, I came back and went to Sam Houston State University as an agriculture major so I could learn to cultivate land and raise crops. Well, that didn’t fit either. So, I messed around for a while and surveyed a bit. I loved surveying, but then surveying is all about trigonometry. Yikes! The math scared me, so I moved on. Eventually I found a job at General Electric and stuck there for 32 years, working in a factory in Houston. I was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, even though I was an assembly foreman. The factory shut down, and I was given the option to take retirement at 55 years

old. I took it. Around that time, I lost my first wife Kathryn, to lung cancer. She was BOI, a native Galvestonian and we have one son together. His name is Ike (yes, like the first male-named hurricane to hit Texas), and he lives in Houston. Ike works with his nephew Patrick drafting. Ike was in the Army and served in Korea and in Iraq. Ike has one son, my grandbaby. Island Guide: How did you meet your current and lovely wife, Gayla? Tex: I met Gayla at a bar in Houston in fact. She was happily partying with some friends, and I just had to meet her. I asked for, and to my surprise, she gave me her actual phone number! Her friends said, “Don’t worry, he won’t call you,” but I did! We were married in Vegas, along with our sons and Elvis, on October 11th, 2010. We’ve lived in Galveston since 2011 part-time and permanently/full-time since 2014. I have a stepson and two more grandbabies as well. Island Guide: Do you have brothers and sisters? Tex: I have two brothers, no sisters. My older brother David was an art teacher. My younger brother Keith, a draftsman, retired from Shell. All three of us are retired now. On Thursdays all three of us boys take our Dad out to lunch. He’s 92 and wears his WWII Veteran cap out to the restaurant each time. I am the only sibling who lives in Galveston; the rest still live in Houston. Island Guide: When did your music come about? Tex: I started playing guitar when I was around 13, mainly to meet girls. I found out I couldn’t play football. Though I was big enough, I didn’t like running into people, and you know that’s kind of a prerequisite. I have always sung along with my parents and at events, so adding the guitar was the next natural step. I would sing the Davy Crockett theme song at a very young age. My Momma noted in my baby book that I’d sing it as Davy “Pocket.” My parents were in musicals at church. My father was the alternate choir director and sang in special events, too. As Methodists, I remember my father practicing hymns like “How Great Thou Art,” “Old Rugged Cross,” and “In the Garden.” He had a very pretty voice. My mom was in the church choir. Island Guide: Have you played in bands too,

or just as your solo acoustic act? Tex: I have played in about 10 bands over the years. In the late 80’s, I met my friend Paul, a Beaumont Highway picker. Paul told me to audition for an Opry show in Columbus and I did. I didn’t know I liked country music at the time, but ended up knowing most the songs already so that was good. I did songs by Johnny Bush and Ray Price among others. I had a wonderful time up there and learned a lot about musicianship and stage presence doing that. I have played in electric bands too but mostly harmonica for those. My solo act consists of acoustic guitar and harmonica. I love intimate settings. I play and sing covers my own way and write my own songs. Island Guide: How would you describe your music? Tex: Genre wise, I’d say ‘Texana,’ Americana, Folk, and Country – solo singer/songwriter style. I play and sing my own songs, and I prefer to surprise my audience by singing obscure songs from other artists and making them my own...even Michael Jackson songs. New ones and old school ones. I don’t do covers, per se. I do other people’s songs. If you want to hear it like they did it, go buy their record. I employ my ‘artistic license,’ for sure. Island Guide: Have you done any recordings we can listen to? Tex: I had the opportunity to play on my cousin Steve Goad’s CD. Mostly, I record myself, and some of my songs can be found on YouTube (search for Tex Renner.) I have written around 30 songs, and I’m looking forward to some studio time soon to properly record some of my originals. Island Guide: What else would you like people to know about you and your music? Tex: That I’m going to keep trying, and get more of my own music out there. I’m always writing new songs. I’m not always finishing them, but I’m always writing. Eventually they get finished. I love my family, my wife, my grandbabies, this island, and playing music. Also, I’m thankful

to have found Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe, where I met Orren Lee Brooks and later Janet and Rex Bell. Lee really encouraged me a lot. Island Guide: Where and when can we find you playing? Tex: I frequent Open Mic Nights at Old Quarter Acoustic Café, Wednesday and Thursday nights at 7pm. I lead an acoustic jam on the first Tuesday evening of every month at 7pm at From the HeART Gallery (511 23rd St.). I play every Tuesday at Oasis Juice Bar & Market (409 25th St.), 10am-1pm. You can also see me play at MOD Coffeehouse from time to time. Join me anytime, anywhere. I love to meet people. Make it a point to connect with Tex and go see him play. You’ll be refreshed by his warm southern charm, southern humor, and southern style music. Tex is Texas personified. You can find Tex at facebook.com/ john.s.renner. For bookings call (281)386-8256.

Concerts & More Events

April 22nd (6pm) - Galveston Artist Residency presents Giant Kitty in concert from Houston in concert. Giant Kitty continues the tradition of strong female voices in punk while bringing along eclectic influences, diverse backgrounds, and a comedic sensibility. This four-piece combines elements of punk, new wave, hard rock, and riot grrrl to make both relevant and irreverent songs full of energy and sharp lyrics. Their sound is often described as a mix between the Runaways, Bikini Kill, and Blondie. It will also feature guest speaker Anna Garza (Houston from Girls Rock Houston, Hatch Youth, DAMN GXRL). Anna Garza is the Founder and Executive Director of Girls Rock Houston. She also works with Hatch Youth, a program that seeks to empower LGBTIQA youth to become positive contributors to society by providing a safe social environment, offering role models and peer support. In addition, she is a part of the DAMN GXRL booking collective, which was awarded an Idea Fund grant for 2017. The exhibit "Reflection in the Sword of Holofernes" will be on view in the GAR gallery. The exhibit features all-female painters including: Mequitta Ahuja, Angela Dufresne, Hannah Rose Dumes, Dana Frankfort, Iva Gueorguieva, Kelly Klaasmeyer, Melinda Laszczynski, Tiffany Livingston, Dona

Nelson, Gael Stack, Kelli Vance, and Hilary Wilder. For more info go to facebook.com/ events/163912704126369 or call (409)974-444. Galveston Artist Residency is located at 2521 Ships Mechanic Row, Downtown Galveston. It is free to attend the art show and concert. WAKE Presents: A. Sinclair, Young Mammals, Cool Moon in concert at the VFW Post 880, 1014 24th St. at 8pm. There is a $8 cover. This is presented by WAKE, a booking and zine collective based in Galveston. Audiotree said of A. Sinclair (Austin), “Their debut release, ‘Pretty Girls’ is a grouping of jittery, garage-rock jams with a healthy dose of group choruses, fuzzy vocals and steady percussion. A. Sinclair is a mature project aiming for honesty and joy in the music itself. They’re not flashy or glamorous, finding more musical satisfaction in simple tone work and phrasing. The pace is always quick and varying; boosted by a sense of urgency and a clear message.” This show is for 18 and older, and you must have ID.
