THE LYNX
also serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a sea port and active waterfront. LYNX (2001) - In 1997 Woodson K. Woods embarked on a journey to build a privateer inspired by the original historic tall ship from the War of 1812 – The Privateer Lynx. His goal was to create a living history museum to educate children and adults alike about American history through active sail training aboard a real wooden sailing ship. What went into LYNX was not just wood, rope, brass, and canvas, it was something that goes far beyond history, ambition, inspiration, determination, and commitment. On July 28, 2001, in Rockport, Maine, Woods’ vision was realized. Past and present converged as Lynx was launched in a gala event ordaining a magnificent future on the high seas. The creation of LYNX embraces eternal truths: passion, sacrifice, perseverance, honor, and courage. Please note LYNX will be operating as a sail away vessel and not available for general tours. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY (2015) - SSV OLIVER HAZARD PERRY is the largest civilian Sailing School Vessel in the United States and the first ocean-going full-rigged ship to be built in the U.S. in over 100 years. The ship is named for US Navy Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Perry led the first US naval victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie; War of 1812. Based out of Fort Adams, Newport Rhode Island, the ship features educational programs focused on growth with leadership development opportunities for students of all ages. Programming includes team building in the form of practical sail training as well as customizable leadership workshops. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY is 200 ft. in length with 7 miles of rope, 160 belaying pins, and 20 sails. OOSTERSCHELDE (1918) - The threemasted topsail schooner OOSTERSCHELDE was

“An Evening With Sophia Loren”
Rescheduled to Sunday, April 8th (4pm) The Grand 1894 Opera House has rescheduled the November 12th performance of “An Evening with Sophia Loren” to Sunday, April 8th at 4pm. The rescheduling of Ms. Loren’s performance was necessary because her Galveston performance was part of her touring schedule that included performances in theaters on the East Coast. And those theaters were damaged by Hurricane Irma. Of all the foreign sex symbols to explode on the American screen in the 1950’s, Sophia Loren is the most iconic and the most enduring. The prolific career of this legendary movie star spans over five decades. She won the first Academy® Award presented for a foreign language role with “Two Women.” Decades later, in 1991, Loren received an Honorary Award from the Academy in acknowledgment of her incredible contributions to world cinema. Synonymous with grace, beauty, and artistry, the Oscar-winning actress, Sophia Loren will captivate you with her intimate onstage conversation with former “Entertainment Tonight” host Bill Harris. Enjoy film clips, home movies, and a Q & A from the audience. Tickets start at $55.

This hilarious one-person comedy has become one of the most successful off-Broadway tours of the last decade. Dixie Longate, the fasttalking Tupperware Lady, packed up her catalogues, left her children in an Alabama trailer park, and now travels across the US and around the world throwing good ol’ fashioned Tupperware Parties filled with hilarious stories, heartfelt accounts of its importance to women, free giveaways, outrageous audience participation, and the most fabulous assortment of Tupperware ever sold on a theater stage. Although curtain times are listed at 8pm, “Hair” is not a traditional musical, so arriving fifteen minutes earlier will keep you from missing any of the ‘action.’ Set in New York City in the late 1960’s “Hair” is the iconic staging of America’s peace-love culture. Also known as the “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical,” “Hair” tells the story of “The Tribe,” a group of politically active friends who are part of the emerging hippie generation and the issues that surround them – sex, drugs, and the Vietnam War. The musical questions standards of morality, sexuality, individualism, racism, violence, drug use, loyalty, and social acceptance – prominent issues whose relevance unfortunately continues in the United States today. The ‘Tribe’ yearns to find a new way; their goal is to change the world. They exuberantly create their own rights of passage through the confusion around them. With themes of alienation and civil disobedience, “Hair” illustrates the 60’s generation’s search for meaning through ‘be-ins,” “love-ins,” and protests. With book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt McDermont, “Hair” was the first rock musical. It is considered to be one of the most adventurous, outlandish, and ultimately profound musicals in musical theatre history. The groundbreaking rock score of “Hair” paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. “Hair” features an extraordinary cast and dozens of unforgettable songs, including ‘Aquarius,’ ‘Let The Sun Shine In,’ ‘Good Morning, Starshine,’ ‘Easy To Be Hard,’ and of course, ‘Hair.’” Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased online at islandetc.org. Special rates are available for groups of ten or more by calling the box office at (409)762-3556. The show includes simulated drug use and sexual acts, racial stereotypes, and slurs of the era, profanity, partial nudity, defiance of authority, energy, love, and happiness. Island ETC does not recommend our production of “Hair” for children. Island ETC is located at 2317 Mechanic St. in Downtown Galveston. For any questions call the box office at (409)762-3556 or visit us at islandetc.org. Come, break out your love beads, and Let The Sun Shine In!

Food The Kitchen Chick:
Exclusively About The Kitchen & Extensively Energized by Cooking By Terry Card
Galveston Island is a “hot spot” vacation destination for many residents of South Texas and beyond. Annual family beach vacations, family reunions, foodies, music-lovers, and festival go-getters from near and far find their calling on Galveston Island. Why is that you ask? A definite eyecatcher on the island is the 32-miles of beach coast that border the Gulf of Mexico. On and off the sandy shores lies endless amounts of fun, family oriented activities and locations. Yearround, these locations bring seasonal events and festivities to keep Galveston residents and visitors happy. A few of these “happy” locations
are: The Pleasure Pier, The Strand, Schlitterbahn, Moody Gardens, Ghost Tours, and many more! A new member to this list is no surprise – The Kitchen Chick. In 2012, Alicia Cahill opened her establishment “The Kitchen Chick” and has maintained the energized spirit and environment for the last 5 years. In time, The Kitchen Chick has become a top destination for kitchen wear and goods represented by top name brands. The store is supplied by many high quality manufacturers such as Wusthof, Maison Cash, Ruffoni, Le Creuset, and Swiss Diamond. Whether it is for personal use or to give as a gift, the products offered at The Kitchen Chick never disappoint. When manufacturers have specials and promotions, customers are lucky and get twice as blessed. Unlike shopping online, there is an overwhelming atmosphere of immersion in this kitchen space. The product is of course the most important part. But being taken care of by employees that care about their customers, and that have an outstanding amount of knowledge in their products, make this shopping trip worth while. Then of course there is a third compelling reason to make The Kitchen Chick your destination - the cooking classes! Creativity and a fun time are inspired by talented guest chefs whose knowledge and unique skills create a culinary adventure that transcends the classes themselves, resulting in a memorable experience for all budding or expert chefs who attend. Classes may be focused on local cuisine or cuisine from far off lands. There is always something different. And, you may be sure that you will acquire new skills that will remain with you for a lifetime. Oh! And you will not go away hungry! As Alicia says, “Full plates and full bellies are guaranteed every time!” From the time the original store was opened on 23rd Street in 2013, growth has exceeded all expectations. It became clear that more space was needed than the 1500 square feet of the original store. The new location had sat vacant for 11 years. It had at one time been part of a Maceo property, the Turf Club. Encompassing about 10,000 square feet, after buying the building, it was necessary to carry out extensive renovations. New electrical wiring, lighting, air conditioning, walls, paint, signs,

roof, and kitchen equipment all had to be purchased and installed – it was a major program. The only part that was functional was the concrete floor which even it had to be upgraded to make it attractive. Finally, after all was completed, the new store opened in January of 2018. The increased size has allowed Alicia to carry a great deal more inventory and dramatically expand class size from 15 people to 30 in a much more comfortable environment. Alicia Cahill, the 35 year old young woman is the sole owner, and totally responsible for every aspect of running the business. Her customer base is very diverse and consists of locals, off-islanders and tourists. The popularity of The Kitchen Chick can easily be measured by the extensive repeat business it has. Of course, with a large repeat customer base, the store benefits greatly from word of mouth recommendations. As with many others who now reside and work here, Alicia, originally from Las Vegas, first came to Galveston to study marine biology at TAMUG (Texas A&M University at Galveston). She did not inherit her love of cooking from family chefs. Her mother was a newspaper journalist and her father was in automobile sales. She got hooked on cooking while attending college when she baked a birthday cake. It was a small endeavour then, and her love affair with cooking has been growing ever since. The drive to open a store that catered exclusively to kitchen wares and focused on cooking grew from her frustration with trying to find proper kitchen utensils for specific specialty cooking ideas she garnered while traveling. This led her to open a store that was not just seasonal or a small part of a much larger general store. The cooking classes were a natural extension of the store. They have created a community feeling amongst new or

experienced cooks who have fun while expanding their knowledge and refining their cooking techniques. Although she uses social media, she does not want to get into internet sales. From her point of view, it does not have the personal touch she seeks. However, she does fully intend growing the business physically now that she has so much more room by trying to stock more of the items that people need for their cooking projects. Acknowledging that she has tried very hard to make The Kitchen Chick a destination store for being able to browse through specialty cookbooks, handle and ask about specific products, get cooking tips, and arrange to spend some time cooking with expertise provided by the guest chefs – she was astounded by a number of her customers factoring in The Kitchen Chick when deciding to move to Galveston. It appears that her vision of a store that is exclusively about the kitchen – in all its aspects – has become a part of their decision to make Galveston their new home. The Kitchen Chick is located at 2402 Market St. in Downtown Galveston. It is open Monday, and Wednesday-Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm. It is closed Tuesdays. Rosenberg Library Museum Book Club Selection:
compellingly readable book sheds light on the complex impacts the Kuerners had on Andrew Wyeth. Even as a young boy growing up in Pennsylvania’s rural Brandywine Valley, he was fascinated by his intriguing neighbors, and they would be a major source of Wyeth’s inspiration for more than seventy years. Karl Kuerner, hardened by poverty and his service in the German Army during World War I, faced demons of anger and frustration. Anna had her own battles, sometimes wandering the farm muttering to herself in German, between periods in the insane asylum. Included are family photos as well as color images of some of the major Wyeth paintings that the Kuerners and the farmscape inspired.

Saturday, April 28th (2-4pm) - “The Downfall of Galveston’s May Walker Burleson” by T. Felder Dorn Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with T. Felder Dorn, author of the fascinating new true-crime/biography of an early Twentieth Century Galvestonian socialite turned murderess. Jennie May Walker Burleson was envied for having everything a woman of her time could want - the privileged upbringing, the dazzling good looks, the dashing war hero husband. She was admired for demonstrating that a woman could want more, from the front of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession to the bottom of a Mesoamerican archaeological dig. But as she stood over the body of her husband’s second wife, gun in hand, society’s envy and admiration quickly hardened into pity and scorn. T. Felder Dorn examines the complicated trajectory of her life as socialite, suffragist, and shooter. T. Felder Dorn graduated from Duke University in 1954 with a BS in chemistry, followed by a PhD in 1958 from the University of Washington. He served on the chemistry faculty at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1958-69 and then served four years on the program staff of the College Board in New York. From 1973 to 1991, he held positions at Kean University in Union, NJ, serving as Associate Dean, Dean and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He retired in 2001. Felder Dorn and his wife, Sara Ruth, have resided in Millburn, New Jersey, since 1973 with their three children and three grandchildren.
“Before We Were Yours: A Novel” by Lisa Wingate Lisa Wingate, a journalist, inspirational speaker, and the author of a host of literary works, has brought to life a family scandal that spans a couple of generations. This story is based on the truelife story of Georgia Tann and the Tennessee Children’s Homes Society orphan scam that she ran. This was a mesmerizing tale of a family ripped apart by horrible, unfair, and illegal tactics. What made this book even more chilling, is the fact that it was inspired by a real-life, decades long scandal. While there are several plot lines, the switching of the time era (e.g., ‘30s to present day), became a bit confusing, Wingate’s character development makes for a very interesting and compelling read. While this is a terrifying story, Wingate places the reader in the position of a horrified spectator learning about this forgotten bit of history and the frightened but brave children to whom it happened. Wingate has built the perfect tension between two stories and through it all has given the reader something to cheer about as well as something to fear. Wingate leads you to the edge of discovery and somehow manages to pulls you back again. This book is definitely a page turner and well worth the read. On the first-floor of the gallery, the exhibition “Stratiforms” features work that examines layers in the natural environment through photography, sculpture, and painting by Robin Dru Germany, Jason Makepeace, and Page Piland. In the second-floor 1878 Gallery, Chance Dunlap presents his hand-crafted fishing lures alongside a selection from his personal collection of folk art lures for the exhibition “Best Chance.” In the second-floor Brown Foundation Gallery, Marcos Lutyens and Laray Polk’s installation, “The Trinity River Project,” presents new perceptions of the Trinity River. “Stratiforms” features the work of three artists who examine layers in the natural environment through photography, sculpture, and painting. These artists demonstrate acute observations of place, process, and materials, specifically in reference to wood and water. Robin Dru Germany portrays waterways in her recent series, titled “Surface Tension,” through photographs that reveal the parallel systems between water and air. Navigating the creeks, rivers and lakes from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast, Germany reveals these intertwined environments that are laden with implications for our future. Jason Makepeace excavates miniature kayaks and oars from whole logs in his “Moldable Subtractions” series. As an avid kayaker, these works honor the shape and form of the vessels he often uses to navigate our coastal waterways. Page Piland’s trompe l’oeil paintings reveal mirrored surfaces painted from the cross sections of reclaimed wood taken from sites he encounters in his daily life. Trained as a sculptor and painter, Chance Dunlap’s recent practice has focused on his passion for handmade fishing lures. “Best Chance” features a selection of Dunlap’s hand-crafted lures, along with examples of folk art lures from the artist’s personal collection. These works mirror Dunlap’s own experience and interests as a fisherman, collector, and maker of lures. Created with the utilitarian and hopeful gesture of attracting something you
can’t see from the surface, Dunlap’s tackle making possesses the formal qualities of form, texture, and color, while also harboring a relationship to place. In conjunction with the exhibition, visitors are invited to participate in an ongoing lure swap. Bring a lure and trade it for a selection of bait left by other visitors. “The Trinity River Project” is a collaborative exhibition by Marcos Lutyens and Laray Polk, seeking to provide an opportunity for viewers (as readers and contemplators) to become uprooted in their perceptions of the Trinity River, then rerooted in the spirit of new possibilities. This project began with a series of ten essays, recounting the complex history and relationship between Dallas and the Trinity River from pre-colonial times to date. The essays, published by “D Magazine,” were followed by a weekend of guided meditations conducted by Marcos Lutyens, and a physical exhibition at the Liliana Bloch Gallery in December, 2016. The presentation of this project at GAC traces the river from Dallas to the mouth of the Trinity River at Galveston Bay.

Technically, a monotype is a print pulled in an edition of just one, either from painting on a sheet of metal or glass. However, Marie Leterme’s monotypes are far beyond the traditional. Each monotype of Marie’s explores the boundaries of the printmaking press: from how far one can get the press bed’s roller to yield to the material to how many layers of color one can apply to a simple sheet of 100% cotton rag. One must see Marie’s work in person to thoroughly understand the complexities of each print. Each run through the press she has been able to generate a new dimension, a new color, adding depth to what many consider a two-dimensional technique. Her work will be on display through April 14th. Vacations on Canvas (2204 Postoffice St., Suite A, (409)974-4066, vacationoncanvas.com) - On display this month is “Life on the Island Is One Long Weekend – Original Oil Paintings by Robert Peterson.” These works will be on view through April 20th.
