Things To Do Fishin Addiction Charters: A Memorable & Fun Fishing Experience
We don't just sell great craft beer .... we sell great craft food!
By Terry Card
As a captain of a charter fishing boat, just when you think you have seen it all – something new comes around the corner. Captain Dan Green of Fishin Addition Charters recollects one such experience. He received a call from an Asian gentleman booking a six-hour offshore fishing charter for himself and five companions. He was told that they would leave at 6am and that all fishing gear could be supplied as he requested, since his group had flown in from Asia the previous day. It was a good day to fish; the water was dead flat, and promptly at 6am the party showed up. Much to Captain Dan’s astonishment, they were all wearing business suits and carrying briefcases. No one could speak English except the fellow who booked the trip so Captain Dan figured he would have a difficult time on this trip. After a one hour trip to the site he had picked, they fished for half an hour, caught two fish, and then when they started getting sick in absolutely flat water, requested that Captain Dan return to the dock. It was a memorable experience although not typical to say the least. Dan Green was taught how to fish from a very young age by his mother. Born in Lumberton, Texas near Beaumont, after his mother and father split, Dan and his mother moved to his grandfather’s house in San Leon, Texas, and it was here through his mother and grandfather, he learned about casting and fishing. He spent hours fishing off the pier in front of the house. He thinks he was hooked on fishing at three years old when he caught a 22” redfish off that pier. He went to the high school on 7th St. near the Top Water Grill in San Leon, before taking Maritime Management at TAMUG. However, he was anxious to do real business management, and before he graduated, he decided to strike out on his own, forming a company at 18 years old called EZ Catch. His Mom cosigned a loan to get him started, and with the money, he purchased a 25-foot Boston Whaler. Prior to that, to gain experience, he was a deckhand for one year for two fishing charters in Galveston. He then applied for and received his captain’s license complying with the U.S. Coast Guard requirement of 350 days on water and successfully completing a series of written examinations. He then applied to Texas Parks and Wildlife to buy his guide license. At first he ran his charter company out of Freeport and trailered his boat from San Leon each day. After three or four years, and having serious problems with the trailer, he decided to sell and try his luck in Galveston. For a while he ran boats as Captain for various owners, splitting the profits until he could get himself established. He formed Fishin Addiction Charters in March of 2010. Captain Dan selected Galveston because of the tourism industry. He runs far more trips here than he could generate in Freeport: 160 trips in 2015 and 180 in 2016 compared to 50 trips in Freeport. Galveston Bay and Jetty trips constitute about 75% of his trips with oil rigs and offshore outings making up the other 25%. His customer base is about 60-70% tourist with the remaining 30-40% local. The tourists mostly go for Bay and Jetty fishing while the locals prefer offshore fishing. Captain Dan has two boats. He has a 25-foot Gulf Coast that holds four people and is used for Bay fishing. He does not have a deckhand for these trips. On his 36-foot Contender with three 250 HP motors, he does have a deckhand because the boat holds six people, and the trips are longer going out to the Jetties and offshore. The deckhand allows him to provide his customers with extra attention and help, a service that is much appreciated. The other things that customers like is the excellent equipment he has, the
spaciousness of the boats, his competitive pricing, and that he applies no reservation fees (he does not charge the credit card up front). And sometimes his deckhand provides humor. On one trip when the rain was pelting down, the deckhand put on a slicker to keep dry. While trying to unhook a line caught on the leg of an oil rig, he fell in the water, ensuring himself of a good soaking. After everyone on board picked themselves off the deck from laughing so hard, they took pity on him and fished him out of the water. Captain Dan is the sole owner of the company. In the future he would like to add another boat with a new Captain, but that will be put on hold for a while. He will be getting married soon, and that of course, comes first. With August coming, he expects that his clients will haul in plentiful amount of Reds and Bull Reds, as well as Spanish and King Mackerel and Black Tip Shark from the jetties and off the beach. It was fishing off the beach one time that Captain Dan had his weirdest experience as a Captain. His customer spent about 15 minutes fighting a Spinner Shark, finally bringing him to the side of the boat. Just as they were leaning over to haul the shark in, another Spinner Shark of the same size came up and bit a huge chunk out of the shark that had been caught. Everyone jumped back - very quickly! In the Bay, August will produce excellent catches of Speckled Trout and Whiting. Later in the year, in October and November, the Bay and Sea Wolf Park will yield great quantities of flounder, Captain Dan’s favorite eating fish. His lure of choice for flounder is a 3” Gulp Curl Tail. Captain Dan’s favorite fighting fish is the Amberjack, and his lure of choice for Amberjack is a seven ounce Snapper Slapper. With that lure, while lying about 60 miles offshore, he caught a 93lb Amberjack after a long and arduous fight. Not only is the fishing experience great with Fishin Addiction Charters, but the Captain and crew try to make it a fun outing. Alcohol is allowed on board, but no glass bottles. For a fishing charter adventure with a personable, experienced Captain, call Fishin Addiction Charters at (832)640-1133, go to their Facebook page, or gulfoffshorefishing.com. All pricing and tours available are listed online or Captain Dan will be happy to provide any and all information for you to charter a fishing trip tailored to your needs.

The Bucket Brigades:
Explore the Beaches for Free
In Galveston, digging in the sand isn’t just for building sand castles. Thanks to The Bucket Brigade program, sponsored by Artist Boat and the Galveston Park Board, the beach can be an exciting classroom where participants can learn about the important relationship between the coastal ecosystem and the people who visit it. Join the fun at these free Bucket Brigade Interpretive Beach Tours and explore the creatures and features that make Galveston’s coastal and marine ecosystems so special. Tours last approximately one hour and involve hands-on activities to give visitors an appreciation for Galveston’s beaches. Bucket Brigade Tours explore questions such as: “Why is the water brown?” “How is sargassum a good thing?” and “How do I connect to the ocean?” “In Galveston, the beach’s ecosystem is teeming with life,” said Artist Boat Executive Director Karla Klay. “We believe that the more the public knows about how humans are connected to the marine environment, the more likely it is they will become good stewards of it.” Bucket Brigade tours are offered Wednesday-Sunday throughout the summer. The 45-minute tours are held at 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm. Tours are offered at a variety of locations along Galveston beaches, including at Stewart Beach (Beach Patrol Tower 6) and 61st St. (Tower 61). Sign up is on location, with a maximum of 20 participants per tour. Larger groups are welcome with advanced notice. Those wishing to participate can sign up for a tour near the lifeguard station at the tour location, where you will see the Bucket

Brigade Tours sign. The Bucket Brigade, in conjunction with the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees, provides free interpretive tours to beach-goers on Galveston Island. The Bucket Brigade’s goal is to increase public understanding of the positive role of sargassum and turbid water in the marine and coastal ecosystems. Bucket Brigade will also highlight the impact everyone can have on coastal ecosystems through marine debris and pollution, and has the potential to directly impact thousands of visitors including those from far away and right here in the Galveston Bay watershed. Tours last approximately one hour and involve hands-on activities to give visitors an appreciation for Galveston’s different but not “dirty” beaches. Bucket Brigade is made possible thanks to a grant from the Texas Coastal Management Program through the Texas General Land Office. With this offer to participate in this series of paintings, Heard hopes to present to the public a side of Galveston’s beauty that is not often seen. Music Joe Premo:
Inspiration Comes Almost Too Easy By Rachel Delanoix
“Honestly, if I would have known guitar was this hard to do, I would have never started it,” Joe Premo leans forward in his chair, “because it’s that hard.” About once a month, Premo can be found out on the MOD patio, surrounded by pedals and wires, performing live for the local crowd. His unique style of evocative guitar music and his laid back personality provide the perfect atmosphere for a warm summer night in historic Downtown Galveston. A Texan by birth, and a Galvestonian for about five years now, Premo started playing guitar early, but it didn’t stick. “It was too hard to play the guitar so I just stopped. I was probably 18,” he explained. After moving to Irving, Texas, for college, Premo made some friends who encouraged him to pick it up again. Twenty years later, an exacting professional, Premo doesn’t shy away from pushing himself to the physical limit. “Some songs you have to press on the strings really hard, and you have to press on the strings for a long time in the same position. And my fingers will start burning like somebody’s holding a match to them.” Inspiration comes almost too easily for Premo, a prolific writer, who has mastered a routine that seeks to capture the fleeting spark that can be maddeningly elusive. “Some songs come really fast. I’ll usually get up and record it on my phone, and then I’ll play it back, and I can figure out the notes. There’s so much in that moment, that I have to record it and come back to it.” Premo describes the creative outpouring in reverent tones, taking credit only for his process, his attention to detail. “It’s taken a little practice to get used to writing songs like that. I have to just let it happen. If I work at them, they kind of lose their potency a little bit. They can start to feel forced, and you can’t force them. If I can wake up and hear it in my head and write it down right then, I’m good. If I wait, I might forget something
that’s really cool and really special about it. It’s like a thunderstorm. Like thunder and lightning. You better be ready because it’s coming for you.” These early morning recording sessions aren’t taken lightly, though. Premo’s exuberance is borne of humility, so he keeps a stockpile in case the spring runs dry. “There’s a whole lot that I haven’t gone back and looked at yet. But I think some good stuff is in there for when I need it; kind of like a bank, like my storage bank of songs.” Premo is devoted to perfecting the style he’s developed and admits he has to be careful not to listen to too much live music. His eyes light up as he rattles off name after name of deeply influential musicians: Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page, BB King, Jeff Beck, Clarence White, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones. His passion has driven him into a detailed exploration of the mechanics of sound. “I started getting into amps and how amps were connected and wired, and speakers and tubes and everything, you know? I just kind of dug into that a lot because I like electronics. I studied electronics. I really was into the sound just as much as I was the music itself. I always wanted my guitar to sound the best that it possibly could. I decided I’m gonna have the best guitars, the best amps, the best speakers, the best wires, even the plugs that plug into the cables are the best that you could buy. You wouldn’t believe how much just a little connector would change your sound.” Premo’s perfectionism pays off. “I was in a band called Southern Embers,” he says. “And we played a gig at the Balinese Room in 2005, the one and only time I got to play there.” Premo pauses to remember the scene, “I could stand on the stage and look down at the water. I looked out the window, and there was the water right there. It was so awesome; I loved it.” There is almost a moment of silence in his story, but soon, his eyes light up again. “I really liked playing electric because you could turn these amplifiers up so loud that it would make your pant legs shake, and you could feel the wind coming off of the speaker! And that night we were playing at the Balinese, we were really into our gig, and I just remember right at the end of the song I hit this big power chord, and it just shook the whole building. There were a bunch of guys up against the wall from

the other bands, and they let out this huge cheer because they felt it in their bones. It was like a big E chord, like the lowest, baddest chord you could hit, and it was cranked up really loud. And when I hit it, it made a reverberation through the whole building. Everybody could feel it; they were just shouting and cheering. That was like my best moment.” Premo’s face breaks into a huge smile. His love of performing is infectious, which explains his devoted local following. Soft-spoken and humble, Premo offers a simple shrug, “If you have a dream you need to follow it every day, even if it’s just a little bit. It’s always a lot of fun to play out here. I just hope people like it.” Joe Premo will be performing live during ArtWalk August 26th, in front of MOD Coffeehouse, 6-9pm. MOD Coffee is located at 2126 Postoffice St., Downtown Galveston.
