Celebrate the Past Growing Seasons at OkraFest:
Benefiting Galveston’s Own Farmers Market
August 4th is the annual OkraFest, held this year at 1880 Garten Verein, 2704 Ave. O, 7-10pm. OkraFest is the annual party where you eat, drink, and make merry - all in the name of community, local agriculture, and good food. This year, it is an epicurean feast with local foods sourced from nearby farms and food artisans, prepared by five different local restaurants that Galveston’s Own Farmers Market (GOFM) feels deserve the spotlight. The night rounds off with a silent auction, raffle prizes, live music, and plenty of drinks and food to share. Join the fun as they revel in this coastal region’s year-long growing season and enjoy a well-deserved midweek celebration benefiting a good cause, the Galveston’s Own Farmers Market. Your support will strengthen the local food community and helps expand its benefits to all within our Galveston community. OkraFest proceeds fund the operations of Food Access Programs like SNAP/FreshBucks and the distribution of WIC vouchers, the expansion of the Young Gardeners Program which turns GISD schoolyards into vegetable-producing mini-farms and students into mini-farmers, and the continued sustainable expansion of the farmers marketplace that has become a beloved fixture of Galveston Island. Your ticket allows you to taste true local summer flavors with a small plates epicurean menu featuring dishes from Old Moon Deli & Pie, Soul 2 Soul Cafe, EATcetera, Smooth Tony’s, and Katie’s Seafood House. There will be local craft beers served up by Galveston Island Brewing. And if that’s not enough, the saucy guys from beloved

Welcome Home Tomato And Ravioli:
Abandoned Harbor Seals Find Refuge at Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid
After traveling 2,324 miles from Crescent City, California to Galveston Island, Tomato and Ravioli have found their forever home at the Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid. It’s been a long journey for the two harbor seal pups, both just shy of being 1 year old. Each was rescued separately last year by the Northcoast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City and cared for, but due to health problems both pups are non-releasable to the wild. That’s where Moody Gardens stepped in. “We had been looking to add seals to our North Pacific Exhibit and had been on the waiting list for a few years when we got the call about Tomato and Ravioli,” said Diane Olsen, assistant curator of seals and penguins at the Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid. “It seemed like a perfect fit. The addition of Tomato and Ravioli furthers Moody Gardens’ commitment to assisting animals in the wild that are not able to be released back.” Rescued at just 32 pounds, Tomato has grown to a whopping 110 pounds and is 50 inches long. All of his injuries healed well, but one left him blind in one eye. With weakened eyesight, he would not be able to forage for food well enough to sustain himself in the wild, which could lead to malnourishment. Ravioli was a pre-mature pup just a few days old when she was picked up by some well-meaning tourists last March. She was found on the beach and thought to be abandoned by her mother. Ravioli suffers from neurologic and balance problems due to a vestibular disorder. She had seizures and because of those problems would be unable to hunt successfully in the wild. Tomato and Ravioli have remained in quarantine for about five months while their biologists worked closely with them to establish relationships, get them to a healthy weight, and train them on behaviors expected of them once they join the other animals on exhibit. The seals have also been behind-the-scenes at Moody Gardens a little bit longer than is typical for new animals joining the Aquarium Pyramid due to the unique challenges faced by Tomato and Ravioli. “Both animals needed to lose a little bit of weight when they arrived at Moody Gardens. It also took Ravioli a little bit longer to develop the muscles needed to get in and out of the water in the pool in the holding area behind the seal exhibit. We knew she would need a little bit more time before she went on exhibit,” said Olsen. After their 30 day quarantine period, a ‘Howdy Gate’ was added behind the scenes to start the process of introducing the seals to the other animals already in the North Pacific Exhibit. “The gate keeps the new pups separate from the four other animals, but allows all of the animals to see and smell one another,” Olsen explained. “Now that everyone is comfortable, Tomato and Ravioli will join Squirt, one of our California sea lions, on exhibit so that they can get familiar with their new home. Once that’s successful, staff will introduce the new seal pups to fellow harbor seals Siku and Porter, and California sea lion, Sam.” “Tomato and Ravioli are both great additions to the North Pacific Exhibit,” Olsen said. “We are thrilled to be the forever home for these two special animals.” Guests can see Tomato and Ravioli in their new habitat at the Aquarium Pyramid, and also on the live seal cam online at moodygardens.org/sealwebcam which is available 24 hours a day seven days a week. For more information please visit moodygardens.org or call (409)744-4673. Moody Gardens® is a public, non-profit, educational destination utilizing nature in the advancement of rehabilitation, conservation, recreation, and research.

The Arts Twelve Photography Project Returns With Focus on “TWELVE Nautical Miles”Since 2010,
the TWELVE project has given individuals the opportunity to capture their unique viewpoints of Galveston Island through the art of photography. This year, TWELVE returns by having participants photograph aspects of the maritime industry by using the same Olympus Trip 35 film camera. The 2018 showing will be held during August’s ArtWalk on Saturday, August 25th from 6-9pm in Edna’s Room of The Grand 1894 Opera House. “TWELVE’s mission is to use photography as a means to elicit conversations and connections about the community we all live in together, but sometimes see differently,” explains Shannon GuillotWright, TWELVE co-founder. “The theme ‘TWELVE Nautical Miles’ once again accomplishes this mission by focusing on Galveston’s port and the people who deliver goods to Galveston and around the world.” A project created in 2010 by Will Wright and Shannon GuillotWright, photography is used to highlight the diversity of people, scenery, and architecture in cities as well as our diverse viewpoints on life. Proceeds from the event will go to the Galveston Seafarers Center. TWELVE also recognizes UTMB’s John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine for their support of the photography project. TWELVE is a nonprofit initiative fiscally sponsored by ARTSPIRE, a program of New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). The program is one of the oldest, largest, most prestigious and artist friendly in the county. For more information on how the project theme was chosen and to view previous year’s photographs, visit twelvepeople.org. Saturday, August 25th (3-5pm): “How We Came to Be” by Johnnie Bernhard Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Johnnie Bernhard and her new novel of a single mother navigating modern life in Houston and Austin. In the multicultural melting pot of Houston, Karen Anders, a high school English teacher, comes to terms with being a single parent to her adopted daughter Tiffany. Her views on motherhood and her attitude toward men are forever changed when she forges an unlikely friendship with a WWII Hungarian refugee, who inspires her to change her life. Tiffany moves to Austin to attend the University of Texas, but soon finds herself distracted from her studies by her gamer boyfriend and a job at the Ink & Juice, a tattoo parlor/juicing bar. Despite the challenges, a family comes together with the assistance of strangers and by the grace of second chances. Richly layered emotional relationships and characters attempting to discover their self-worth combine to create a poignant story of “How We Came to Be.” Johnnie Bernhard is a former English teacher and journalist currently supporting writers as a literary agent. Her work has appeared both nationally and internationally in magazines and newspapers. Galveston’s To Whom It May’s New Album “The Great Filter Breaks” The Great Silence Hard Rock/Metal Trio is First Band Signed to Kevin Martin from Candlebox’s New Label G4L Records
On the heels of announcing their signing with Candlebox Frontman Kevin Martin’s label G4L Records earlier last month, Hard Rock/Metal Trio To Whom It May (TWIM) has revealed that they are releasing their much-anticipated album “The Great Filter.” Featuring their hard-hitting, smash single “Calculate,” TWIM’s latest effort is already being hailed as an impressive lesson in contrasts by many, including the group’s frontman Jonathan Jourdan. As the band’s main songwriter, he describes the record as “a blend of rhythmic and melodic ideas that depend on each other to sound complete.” He goes on to say that it also encompasses “chaotic and soothing moments that depend on each other for balance.” This dichotomy is also evident within the band itself. Featuring elements of Prog, Metal, and unadulterated Rock n’ Roll, the paired down threesome has created a complexity that is larger than the sum of its parts. Featuring Dexas Villarreal on drums and Robb Mars on bass, these two stellar musicians serve up the group’s signature hardrocking, groove-infested backbeat while Jourdan adds his guitar riffs soaring into the ether. The result was enough to make multi-platinum selling artist Kevin Martin a fan. “I knew the minute I heard ‘To Whom It May’ that I wanted to work with them in any way possible,” said Martin. “There is something intangible about everything [that] TWIM does musically and that’s what I love about them; they make me want to listen more and more to try and put my finger on it, challenging me, if you will, to understand why, who, or what has inspired these musicians to create such awe-inspiring music!” The concept for “The Great Filter,” which was produced by Dean DiChosa (Candiria, Family Force 5), is based on the “Great Filter Hypothesis,” answers the question as to why we humans haven’t made contact with aliens yet. It suggests that at some point there is an evolutionary leap that no species can survive, leaving humans with two choices: we’ve passed “The Filter” and were the lucky species that survived or we haven’t met “The Great Filter” yet and inevitably will meet our extinction. “This resonated with us as an album title because, in a lot of ways, this album was our personal Great Filter,” said Jourdan. “A lot of people also have their own ‘Great Filter’ in their life. Something that makes them fear an inevitable defeat. In that moment you can chose to be paralyzed by it, or you can believe that you will survive.” To learn about TWIM and get the latest information, visit towhomitmay.net.
