Things To Do Dickens on the Strand Returns: A Holiday Tradition Begins Again
Make history at Galveston’s world-famous Victorian holiday festival, Dickens on The Strand! Held December 1st-3rd, the 44th annual festival is produced by Galveston Historical Foundation and is a holiday tradition with great family programming, special holiday performances, and newly created events all weekend long. This year’s festival begins Friday, December 1st with free admission to the kick off event, Fezziwig’s Beer Hall, 5-9pm; and continues with ticketed admission Saturday, December 2nd 10am-9pm, and Sunday, December 3rd 12 noon-6pm. Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for adults and $9 for youth. Tickets are available online at dickensonthestrand.org, by calling (409)765-7834, or at all area Randall’s stores. Attendees in Victorian costume will be admitted for $8. Many of this year’s special events, concerts, and tours have limited seating. The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on multiple stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers, and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and gift items. Three descendants of Charles Dickens will grace the festival as GHF welcomes Mark Charles Dickens, a great-greatgrandson; Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, a great-great-great-granddaughter; and Jane Dickens Monk, a great-great-granddaughter. All descendants will be at numerous events throughout the weekend. “Returning to Galveston for Dickens on the Strand is a very exciting prospect, not least because this year I’ll be launching my new book, ‘Dickens and Christmas,’ at the festival,” says Lucinda Dickens Hawksley. “I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and to making new ones, as well as to discover what new activities GHF has planned for us. This year, there’ll be three members of the Dickens family present, so come and say hello!”

Free for all attendees, the Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Other Muppets, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, and Sam the Eagle, weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases: past, present, and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

December 2017 Treasure of the Month:
Galveston Artillery BallThisSouvenirs on Exhibit month, Rosenberg Library celebrates
one of the island’s oldest institutions - the Galveston Artillery Club - which was established 177 years ago. During December, the library will exhibit an engraved invitation and a lace ball gown worn to the Artillery Club’s 100th Anniversary celebration, which took place on December 2nd, 1940. The items were a gift of Alicia Tate, a lifelong Galveston resident who was employed as a librarian for Galveston Independent School District for more than 40 years. Tate passed away in 1996.
History of the Galveston Artillery Club
Galveston was incorporated in 1839, just a few years after the pivotal Texas Revolution. Relations with Mexico remained tense, and residents of Galveston recognized the city’s vulnerability to a military blockade or invasion from its southern neighbor. In an effort to combat this threat, a group of local volunteers organized the Galveston Artillery Company. Few of these men were formally trained soldiers; rather, most were prominent businessmen. However, these individuals were committed to protecting the city and its harbor. An organizational charter and constitution were drafted, and officers were elected. Membership was limited to adult males with the ability to purchase their own uniforms and weapons as well as to pay a 50-cent initiation fee. Monthly dues totaled 25 cents, and attendance at regular meetings was required. The Artillery Company’s activities slowed during the Civil War, as many of its members left the area to join the Confederate army. Over time, the organization evolved from a military company into a strictly social club, and its name changed from the Galveston Artillery Company to the Galveston Artillery Club. The Galveston Artillery Club remains an exclusive social organization nearly 180 years after its founding. Its clubhouse at 31st St. and Ave. O offers fine dining, bar service, and recreational facilities as a welcome respite for its members.

Tickets start at $25.
100th Anniversary Celebration in 1940
Since 1840, the Galveston Artillery Company has hosted an annual ball. The year 1940 marked the 100th anniversary of the Galveston Artillery Club, and an elaborate gala was held at the Hollywood Dinner Club in early December. In contrast to previous years, there were no new debutantes presented. Instead, the planning committee chose to honor all women who had made formal debuts in years prior to 1925. The oldest debutant in attendance had been presented in 1872. The Hollywood Dinner Club was decorated in a rich color scheme of burgundy, emerald green, and gray with gold accents. A 14-piece orchestra with two vocalists provided the evening’s entertainment. Elaborate floral arrangements were placed around the venue and a large block of ice with a floral arrangement frozen inside of it made a stunning centerpiece. The 50-foot banquet table included a lavish spread of oxtail soup, creamed oysters, whole salmon, roast turkey, tenderloin of beef, and assorted salads. After dinner, guests enjoyed a six-tiered embossed white cake and received miniature cakes in custom boxes to take home. According to a review of the event in “Galveston Daily News,” the 100th Artillery Ball was “the most brilliant party of many seasons.” The Treasure of the Month is located on the library’s second floor near the East Entrance. It can be viewed during regular library hours, 9am-9pm Monday-Thursday, and 9am-6pm Friday and Saturday. For more info, contact the Museum Office at (409)763-8854 x. 125 or go to rosenberg-library-museum.org.

Books 2018 Galveston Reads Selection:
“News of the World” by Paulette Jiles
The Galveston Reads Committee invites the public to participate in the programs and book discussions of its 2018 reading series. This year’s Galveston Reads book choice is “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles. Ms. Jiles will be headlining the schedule of events with a talk and book signing. In “News of the World,” the aging itinerant Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver the young orphan to her relatives. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old once again has been torn away from the only home she knows. Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. The library also has the book available for checkout in hard copy, audio book, and electronic copies through Overdrive.

The Arts This Month at Galveston Arts Center On Exhibit Through January 7th
Galveston Arts Center (GAC) has three exhibitions up this month. In the first floor gallery, Galveston-based artist Dan Schmahl’s exhibition, “Surfer’s Beach,” references his favorite surf spot through the re-creation of a life guard stand, photographs, video, and printed materials. Dan Schmahl’s exhibition, “Surfer’s Beach,” takes its title from Sex Wax graffiti on Galveston’s seawall at the artist’s favorite surfing spot. In someone’s attempt to designate the spot as a “surfer’s beach,” Schmahl found the moniker poetic and a reminder that life is suffering, even in his search for a beach break. Schmahl’s exhibition documents the romantic pipe-dream of a Galveston, Texas, beachfront utopia. This hopeful surf spot will be portrayed through a body of work containing photographs, video, printed matter, and a 13-foot-tall viewing platform resembling one of Galveston’s seawall lifeguard stands. In the second-floor 1878 Gallery, the exhibition “Entanglement” features paintings of the undergrowth of forests and tree knots by Joan Laughlin. Joan Laughlin’s detailed paintings of forest undergrowth and tree knots highlight the resilience of the natural world and allude to the fleeting nature of memory for the exhibition “Entanglement.” Laughlin’s monochromatic renderings of the tangled forest floor border between hyperreal and abstract in their attention to detail. Laughlin began this body of work while caring for her father who had Alzheimer’s disease. Through this experience and observations of the forest ecosystem, Laughlin reflects on the interconnections between loss and regeneration. In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Motoyuki Noguchi and Toshimichi Minagawa of the Taiguruma Revival Project based in Galveston’s sister-city, Niigata, Japan, reintroduce the lost art of Japanese fish cart lanterns through an installation incorporating lanterns and a radio broadcast of messages from visitors to the exhibition Taiguruma Radio Station. These exhibitions will remain on view through January 7th, 2018. GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information, and map can be downloaded at galvestonartscenter.org. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am5pm and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times.

Trio du Jour:
A Jazzy Classic Act
By Terry Card If you ask most people what their future plans are – no matter whether they are in business working for someone else or for themselves, or whether they are musicians, artists or in sports – they have great plans for the future – often very different from what they are doing. Not so for the members of the jazz group Trio du Jour. They love what they do and have no plans to change as far into the future as they can see. The Trio du Jour is actually a duo. Each month the principals of the group, Leah Stonum on piano and bassist Mel Drybread, add a member to the group for that month only. That way says Mel, the music stays fresh. And since they have about eight musicians in the cycle who play many different instruments including, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, percussion instruments and guitar, variety becomes a mainstay of their music. Trio du Jour was formed in New Orleans – hence the French name meaning Trio of the Day, which is very appropriate for a group that varies its members in the manner they do. The trio plays music that their audience will recognize - music that they can sing along to, or dance to or just kick back and listen to, in the comfortable chairs of the Toujouse Bar in the Tremont Hotel on Mechanic Street near 24th. Every Friday and Saturday night 6-10pm, The Tremont Hotel, a Wyndham Grand Hotel, hosts a free jazz night. Both Leah and Mel come from musical families and their individual talent became evident at an early age - in Leah’s case, at a very early age. Her father was an optometrist in Tallassee (near Montgomery), Alabama who sang in a choir as did her sister. But Leah who started piano very early, after going to see “The Sound of Music,” sat down at the keyboard and played the entire score at the age of five. Music became her life after that. She was a Music Major at Auburn University but switched to marketing. While attending college, she played in a big band on weekends. After college, she began playing in restaurants in Baton Rouge and from there moved to New Orleans and played at several clubs on Bourbon Street, before performing regularly at Pat O’Brien’s in the French Quarter, where she teamed up with Jason Marsalis and then toured internationally. She played in Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden, performed for seven years on the Royal Caribbean ships, as well as on the American Queen River Boat on the Mississippi. She said that when you travel and work internationally, overseas cultures can seem odd to us. For instance, one night she was playing in a hotel in Stockholm where no tipping was allowed. To overcome that, the hotel took the tips out of drinks the patrons bought for her. This guy who was buying drinks droned on about how he was a Russian spy, finally ending by using the old line that if you tell, you die. She could not get out of there fast enough. Mel was an accomplished bassist by the time he was 20 years old. When he was 18, he joined the Air Force, and for something to do, he bought a bass guitar and practiced relentlessly for a year. He also majored in music at college. After getting out, he played in jazz clubs in Kansas City and was so highly regarded that he was recruited by Joe Williams, the featured singer with the Count Basie Band. He also played with Robert Goulet and even spent some time with the Tonight Show Band. When he was on the road with Joe Williams, they rode in his 1964 Cadillac hearse. Most of the time there was no problem, but one club owner asked that they park the hearse out back. It made the customers nervous. Joe and Mel thought that was hilarious. Mel’s father was a Professor of Music in Kansas City where Mel was born and his musical talent was inherited by his son who rapidly became an accomplished bassist playing both jazz and
classical music. With Joe Williams and on his own, he played music for a living for 13 years before meeting Leah in 2012, when they were both playing on the American Queen. Mel was a bandleader in a different room from Leah and when he finished, he would come in and listen to her play piano. In 2014, they formed a partnership as a duo while still on the riverboat and then decided to move to Houston, where they played in various clubs and special events. When she was not on the American Queen, Leah played piano as a single performer, subbing for the permanent pianist at the Tremont Hotel in Galveston from 2009 to 2014. After George Mitchell died, the General Manager asked her if she could form a group to play at the hotel. She told him she had just formed a duo. The general manager wanted a trio to play jazz, so she called Mel and they engaged a saxophone player to form a trio,. Thus, in November of 2014, the Trio du Jour became the Friday and Saturday night jazz group for The Tremont. Their customer base at the Tremont is about 50% locals and 50% tourists. While it is not necessary to rotate a third person for the tourists, it is essential for their local following because it keeps the sound fresh. In addition, the third member added to the duo each month is usually not engaged elsewhere, which allows them to hire highly talented musicians at a reasonable price. When not playing at the Tremont, they play during the week in Houston at many different venues including nursing homes, restaurants, bars, and at weddings and many house parties. They have written their own music, but prefer to play jazz that their audience will recognize and enjoy. The Tri du Jour plays music that has feeling and rhythm and is not just a bunch of notes with no melody. In December, they will also be playing at the San Luis Hotel Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, giving anyone who wants to listen to first-rate jazz, more opportunity to do so. They are friendly and outgoing and interact with their audience, taking requests and providing them with a fun evening of great music. Don’t be surprised if the music makes you want to get up and dance. To book them for a party or event, call Leah at (504)616-3824.
