Both lighthearted and deeply moving, playwright Ernest Thompson’s American theatrical masterpiece is the story of a curmudgeonly father and husband who must confront his strained relationship with his adult daughter and his own not-so-gentle march into old age. “‘On Golden Pond’ alternates with such shrewdness between humor and heartbreak that it comes to feel as real and full as life itself.” —The Boston Globe. Tickets start at $22.50.

Beautify the Bucket Contest is About to Begin

The Beautify the Bucket Competition allows participants to take an active role in beautifying Galveston beaches and improving stewardship behaviors. Participants in the competition paint a blue trash barrel destined for Galveston beaches based on a theme: ocean organisms, marine debris, coastal and marine ecosystems, or Galveston recreational activities. After the competition, the barrels will be added to Galveston’s beaches where they will be enjoyed by visitors and encourage proper disposal of trash to reduce aquatic trash. There are 2 competitions each year, hosted to coincide with the spring and fall Adopt-A-Beach Coast-wide Cleanup events. The 2018 competition dates are: Saturday April 21st and Saturday September 15th. Individuals and groups of all ages can register.

Rescheduled to Sunday, April 8th (4pm)

Those theaters were damaged by Hurricane Irma. The prolific career of this legendary movie star spans over five decades. She won the first Academy® Award presented for a foreign language role with “Two Women.” Decades later, in 1991, Loren received an Honorary Award from the Academy in acknowledgment of her incredible contributions to world cinema. Synonymous with grace, beauty, and artistry, the Oscar-winning actress, Sophia Loren will captivate you with her intimate onstage conversation with former “Entertainment Tonight” host Bill Harris. Enjoy film clips, home movies, and a Q & A from the audience.

Ongoing - “Eyes of Texas: A Century of Artistic Visions” Special Exhibit - The Bryan Collection holds hundreds of paintings relating to Texas. Each was selected per a basic criterion: the artist had to understand Texas through lived experience. According to J.P. Bryan, founder of the Bryan Museum, “[Each artist] actually participated in the events of the settlement of Texas, those who saw it at its fullest expression or, at the very least, while the dust was still settling on that unique chapter of United States history.” “Eyes of Texas” provides the chance to see the evolving artistic visions that helped to shape Texas. By focusing on the years between 1850 and 1950, these works highlight the artistic search for a regional identity. Galveston’s Uniqueness, Galveston’s Locals By Terry Card When longtime Galveston residents are told by someone they come from places that are renowned for their beauty and/or great climate or that they have traveled the world – the often asked question is – why ever did you settle here in Galveston? What they take for granted is Galveston’s uniqueness. For many people who have lived near bodies of water, Galveston, the beach community, is a draw. For others – it’s the fact that Galveston may be a city of 50,000 people – but is really a village. And there is a saying in Galveston – that if you can’t find something to do here, then you are just plain lazy! Then there are the people. Eccentric? You bet! Fun loving? Of course! Galvestonians are always willing to gather at a favorite spot and discuss the topic at hand. The owners of Galveston Coffee Roasters, John Alvarez and Dru Borges, specifically sought out Galveston when they left Hawaii. John had lived there and been in the coffee business for the last 25 years of his life, owning and running a shop on the north shore of Oahu. His wife Dru was born and raised in Hawaii. The draw of moving from one beach community to another beach community appealed to them especially since both Hawaii and Galveston have a good mix of locals and tourists – which in their mind suited the coffee business well. John admittedly had first-hand knowledge of Galveston, having been born and raised in Houston. He went to the University of Texas gaining a degree in economics and then attended Loyola University in New Orleans earning his MBA. His father was a Houston banker and his mother was an artist born and raised in New Orleans where she became a successful painter, specializing in flowers. Dru was born and raised in Honolulu, and after high school decided to start her own business at 22 years of age. She ran her cleaning service for 30 years with a superstar rating – an accomplishment based on not even one single complaint in all that time. After moving here, they looked at many different locations, but when space became available downtown, they grabbed it. After cleaning and painting their new premises for about one and a half months, hanging all the pictures and posters they had collected from around the world, they opened Galveston Coffee Roasters on 23rd Street just south of the famous Star Drugstore, in July 2016. Over time, their customer base has evolved into more of a repeat business of locals. The mix is approximately two-thirds local and one-third tourist. The first year they opened, they had their worst weekend ever during the Lone Star Rally and seriously contemplated closing for the rally last year. Surprisingly, business was very strong during the 2017 rally, as it is during various events like Dickens on the Strand, Mardis Gras, July 4th and others. This is definitely a commonality amongst businesses located in the downtown area, which shows how important the Galveston events are. Like many of Galveston businesses, they support local charities, especially the Farmer’s Market. John and Dru roast all their own coffee. They have access to coffee beans from all over the world because Houston is one of the largest coffee ports anywhere. There are two main types of coffee bean – Arabica, which is the top quality bean – and the one Galveston Coffee Roasters use exclusively - and Robusta, an inferior quality bean – which they never use. Galveston Coffee Roasters obtain their beans from coffee brokers in Houston. When they lived and owned the shop in Hawaii, they were able to get the beans directly from the farms, but here, it’s not possible. From the Arabica beans they purchase through their broker,

Old Moon Deli & Pie: A Nifty Little Local Deli

By Lauren Ware Sandwiches are loved by all kinds of people throughout the world. They are simple to make, leave no dirty dishes behind, and they’re delicious! Recently, I stumbled upon a nifty little sandwich shop by the name of Old Moon Deli & Pie. They’re located on 408 23rd Street, sandwiched between Visker & Scrivener’s Quill Shop and an antique sign shop. Though I just discovered this place, they have been open since May 13th, 2017, serving only the freshest of sandwiches and pies. They use meats and cheeses with no artificial flavors, colors, nitrates, fillers, by-products, or msg. Little tables with chairs are set up outside and upon entering, you can feel a natural sense of the island and what it means to this little sandwich shop. My favorite thing is the beautiful painting of Galveston Island with swirls of shades of blue and gold. The space inside is just right with upstairs seating for their busy hours, and customers who prefer a more secluded scene. I’m a fairly simple person, so the sandwich I always get is the Turkey Club packed with spring mix, turkey, bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, and fig spread. I have never in my life been a fan of anything fig, but it would not be the sandwich it is

without that fig spread. Samitha Hess with From the HeART Gallery recommends the Beet sandwich. Even though they are not a fan of beets, she insists upon it, saying no one would know they’re beets unless told so. Yes, it’s just that good. When I asked the owners, which items are most ordered, the owners Margaret Lejeune and Patrick Wheeler agree that the most ordered pies are the Dark Chocolate Raspberry and Coconut Cream. When it comes to sandwiches, they say, “it seems to depend on the day of the week. But people usually go for The Rueben or Island Time.” They also have The Cuban sandwich, Chef Mary’s Pimento Cheese Melt, and a vegetarian option called the Dianna Ray. If you’re in the mood for just some pie, they have other selections such as Key Lime, Chocolate Creme, Peanut Butter Chocolate, and Strawberry Creme. Regardless of the weather, stop by and order a freshly made sandwich and a soda pop and enjoy

Books “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles:

Events Continue for the 2018 Galveston Reads Program

The Galveston Reads Committee invites the public to participate in the programs and book discussions of its 2018 reading series. This year’s Galveston Reads book choice is “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles. Ms. Jiles will be headlining the schedule of events with a talk and book signing. The library also has the book available for checkout in hard copy, audio book, and electronic copies through Overdrive.

At a Glance

In “News of the World,” the aging itinerant Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver the young orphan to her relatives. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. Army, the ten-yearold once again has been torn away from the only home she knows. Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous.

Music Brandon Rhyder In Concert: Live at the Old Quarter February 16th

Friday, February 16th at 8:30pm, Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe welcomes long time favorite, Brandon Rhyder. Tickets are available at prekindle.com for $15. Rhyder released his first album, self-titled “Brandon Rhyder,” in 2001 and since then has released six more. His second album, “Behind The Pine Curtain” was released in 2003. His third album, “Conviction,” was produced by Walt Wilkins, and came out in August 2005. It was with his fourth album titled “Live” that was produced by Apex Records (based out of Nashville, TN), that led to his first number one single on the Texas Country Music Chart, “Before I Knew Your Name.” Brandon released of his fifth record in 2008 titled “Every Night” and his sixth record, “Head Above Water,” was released on February 16, 2010. In February 2010, Brandon Rhyder celebrated his fast rising single, “Rock Angel,” which landed in the coveted No. 1 spot for two weeks in a row on both the Texas Music charts and the Texas Regional Radio. This song is the lead track from his new disc “Head Above Water” that was released nationwide on February 16, 2010 via Thirty Tigers. The album also includes a bonus DVD featuring an exclusive, behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of this disc. Also, Brandon moved his booking to Red 11 in Nashville where his album “Every Night” was produced by Radney Foster. The record debuted at No. 53 on the Top Country Albums chart and at No. 50 on Billboard’s Top New Artist Albums chart. “Every Night’s” lead single, “This Ain’t It,” jumped to No. 5 on the Texas Music Chart. In May 2013, Rhyder released his new hit single “Haggard.” The first single from the self-titled release “Brandon Rhyder” explores the complexities of relationships and the push and pull that somehow seems to make it all work. “They Need Each

Other,” a collaboration written and performed with singersongwriter Lori McKenna, sets the tone for the new release, four years in the making for Rhyder. The collection of songs is reminiscent of the man that fans have come to love, while providing a new depth of emotion garnered from trials and tribulations felt in recent years. “When you ponder the deeper questions: who am I as a husband, father, songwriter and musician? It both humbles and inspires. And you can’t answer those questions in a rush…” Almost apologetically, Rhyder addresses the four-year hiatus from studio activity. “I had to step back and rethink who I was and what I was doing. I needed to clear my mind and take a break from the day-to-day business for a while. And it was the best thing I could have ever done,” he explains. “In that time, I feel I’ve evolved, grown and realized it’s not just about me, or even about my wife, Kelli. It’s about family, relationship, legacy. The big things.” There’s no doubt that this record is Rhyder’s line in the sand. A fresh resolve from a 15-year veteran of the road. “If I’m completely honest, I had to decide, for myself and my family, if this line of work is where I’m spending the rest of my working days. This collection of songs is my answer.” The 10-track album is receiving positive early reviews, professing this as Brandon’s best work and drawing comparison to the critically acclaimed “Conviction.” “‘Conviction’ was the one that was either going to work or not. This new record comes from the same place.”

Brandon Rhyder’s release was produced by industry stalwart, mentor and friend, Walt Wilkins. It is the third installment from the pair who also worked in tandem on 2006’s “Conviction” and 2010’s “Head Above Water.” The new CD includes four co-writes with revered songsmiths including Keith Gattis, Michael Hearne, Bri Bagwell and multiple Grammy-winner Lori McKenna. In the face of so much writing prowess, it may be the six tracks written by Rhyder himself that are the most telling. Lyrics and delivery from a heart made bare. “Brandon Rhyder” is the soundtrack born at the crossroads of life and is a thoughtful chronicle of universal experience. For more information and updates go to brandonrhyder.com. Opening for Rhyder is Charlie and The Regrets, a Houston based alt-country/Americana band that brings the standout lap steel work of Willy T. to frontman Charlie’s narrative songwriting to create their unique Gulf Coast flavor of alt-country. Music Zak Perry:

A Gentle Soul with A Tough Determination to Succeed

Zak Perry started playing music when he was in high school, but this wasn’t exactly a new concept for him. Zak’s mother was an accomplished pianist, and “I think my Dad wanted to be Frank Sinatra,” Zak jokes of his father, who was a nightclub performer for many years. “They soon became my biggest fans,” and his subsequent career has taken him all over the world. His genuine performances and authentic songwriting has found an eager audience of fans. We recently had the opportunity to talk with local favorite Zak Perry, about his music, the band, life, and what’s coming up. Island Guide: Where are you from? How long have you been playing music on the island? Zak: I’m from St. Charles, Missouri, which is a small riverfront town just outside of St. Louis. I’ve lived on the island for nine years. I’ve been playing here for close to 15 years. Island Guide: Who is in the Zak Perry & the Beautiful Things band and what do each play or contribute? Zak: The band is made up of Vern Vernnard on slide guitar, Hammond B3, and background vocals. Jason Charron is on drums. Scott “Sting” Ray holds down the low end. Island Guide: Describe your style of music, your sound, for someone who has never heard you. Zak: It covers a wide spectrum, but I would say it’s a mixture of country, rock, blues, and gospel. Island Guide: Your music is self-described as “Heavy Electric Southern Soul, Rock, Blues-Rock.” What does that mean to you personally? Zak: That moniker was officially born in the late 90’s in New York City. We were described that way by a reporter in the “Village Voice Magazine,” and since then, it has kinda stuck. It could be a little misleading because many of my songs are not heavy, electric Southern Soul, but I like the overall concept of the statement, so I’ve stuck with it. Island Guide: Describe a live show for someone who hasn’t had the honor of seeing you guys. Zak: At a live show, anything can happen, and we’ve noticed that a lot of the songs take different shapes, often straying from the recorded version. I am lucky enough that my band has been with me for 20 years, and when I want to go in a different direction, they are like a built-in safety net. We all seem to read each other’s minds on stage. Island Guide: How old were you when you fell in love with music? Zak: I think it was inherent because in my mom’s baby books, as early as 6 months old, she mentioned that I would “rock uncontrollably” to rock n’ roll, specifically Elvis Presley. That being said, music was always being played in my house. My mother was an accomplished pianist and my father was quite the crooner. I’m pretty sure he thought he was Frank Sinatra. Island Guide: How did you get started in music? And who were your influences, when, where, etc… What got you started. Zak: The reason I first started was an 8thgrade guitar class, but I remember being on a swing set in Kindergarten and making up a song in my head. I remember that explicitly. As far as influences, I’d say that Neil Young, Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, YES, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson were right up there but the list goes on and on. Ray Charles played throughout our household continuously, and Willie Nelson, but that was me - my dad didn’t like Willie Nelson. He said he was nothing but a pothead. It’s a long-standing joke in our family. Island Guide: How has that influenced you now as an adult, not the Willie story, but the musical influences? Zak: I’m technically unemployed - ok,

professionally unemployed. I play music for a living. It’s awesome. Island Guide: Was there a point in your life when you decided that playing music was going to be your career? Tell us the story of how that decision came about. Zak: My father, since I was very young, groomed me to be a professional golfer. When I turned 18 and graduated, I was getting hounded by him and numerous colleges about continuing into a life of golf. I knew in my heart that golf wasn’t where I wanted to go. That’s when I decided I was going to start a band. It was pretty much a rebellion thing. Island Guide: What has been the biggest challenge to overcome being a musician? Zak: (laughing) Lack of money. Island Guide: Do you play covers and originals? Zak: I am getting ready to release my 10th CD of original music, so that is our main focus obviously, but we do a lot of covers, and we always do them “our way.” Once you hear us play “that” cover, you’ll like our version better. Island Guide: Do you write music? Tell us how the songwriting process happens. Zak: Yes I do. It is quite a mystery and something that I don’t even want to question for fear that it might quit happening. Sometimes I am not even sure how it happens, and I am ok with that. It just does. Sometimes its very magical. Island Guide: What influences you as a songwriter? Zak: As cliche as it sounds - life and love. Even though that is worn out, it is very true for me as a songwriter to put those emotions into a song; those experiences are real to me. They mean something. Life and love both, are easy influences for my songwriting. Island Guide: What is your favorite song to perform and why? Zak: My favorite song to play is the last one I wrote, whatever that may be. I love the fresh feeling of a newly created song. It’s exciting. Island Guide: What advice would you offer people who are just starting out, either individually or as a band. Everyone has a “first day.” Zak: Be ready (and willing) to give up any sense of normalcy in your life. Stay humble, leave your ego at home. It’s all about the song. It’s all about the music. Island Guide: Our 5 questions that we ask everyone: If you could pick one band to see live, living or dead, who would it be? Zak: No question, Ray Charles. Island Guide: What was the first album you remember purchasing? Zak: Willie Nelson’s “Red Headed Stranger” when I was 14 years old. Island Guide: What piece of music equipment can you simply not live without? Zak: My voice. Island Guide: 10 years from now, what would you like to be doing? Zak: Growing green things. Island Guide: If you could open up for any band right now, who would it be? Zak: Led Zeppelin. Island Guide: Any big announcements for 2018, big gigs, new music, new CD’s, etc? Zak: Oh yeah, where do we start! Zak Perry & the Beautiful Things will be having a CD Release Party Weekend for our new album “Marrow,” February 9th at the Poop Deck, and February 10th at Woody’s. We will continue on with that the next weekend in Austin, where we will be live on KLBJ Radio promoting the new CD and our show that Saturday night at Hanover’s Draught House. And of course, I have my long-standing residency every Friday night at the legendary Poop Deck, as well as hosting an open jam every Tuesday night at Sharky’s. In mid-April, I will leave for an extended tour throughout Europe, where I will be accompanied by a European lineup of great friends and outstanding musicians, under the direction and

design of FabCat MGMT and JoJo Concerts. I will be back on American soil June 29th and 30th for the BearCat Getaway Music Festival on the beautiful Black River in Lesterville Missouri, located in the Mark Twain National Forest. Island Guide: Anyone you want to thank? Zak: The list could go on and on but a couple of ‘musts’ are: Glenda Taylor from Across the Stage, Martine and Fabrice Cat of FabCat MGMT, Catherine Stroud, Raul and Theresa at the Poop Deck for help putting my kid through high school, RockBottom George, and Boudreaux Barrow.
