Things To Do And Now for Something a Little Different

“Let’s do something different tonight. Maybe go somewhere, where we can become immersed in a game - like the ones online - drink some craft beer, and get a bite to eat. You know how I love gaming - but online you just sit there by yourself all the time. That can get boring. The place I heard about has board games, card games, and puzzles, and best of all it lets me take you on, head to head!”

“What’s it called?” “Board Game Island” “OK. Let’s give it a try.”

Originally opened in 2013, Board Game Island was bought in October 2016 by Debra Bergland R.N., a currently active floor nurse at Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center. Debra has been in the profession for twentyfive years, seventeen of which were at UTMB. Originally a Canadian, born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, at twentynine she went back to school, deciding that bartending was not a lifelong career for her.

Since she is still nursing, Curtis manages the business and essentially, runs the establishment.

More of a local, Curtis was born in Conroe, Texas. His father was a police officer and his mother worked in a bank. Curtis graduated from the University of Houston and became a consultant, working for a law firm, but found that it was not for him.

He wanted to be on his own and in a different business.

He put his legal training to use, researching different business models and discovered

that board game establishments were one of the fastest growing businesses worldwide. They have had tremendous growth, especially in Canada and Asia. He found that people liked them because they are not a traditional bar or restaurant, yet appealed to online gamers because they could still play games. The difference is that they are able to play games with real live people, chat while playing over a beer or coffee, and have something to eat. He felt that this was the business for him, but first, he had to gain some experience while he saved to open his own company. However, the opportunity to learn and ultimately manage the business he wanted to be in, resulted in him being happily engaged at Board Game Island.

It is the human interaction that is most gratifying at Board Game Island.

Games appeal to a huge segment of our modern day society, but playing games solely online is isolating, and gamers are starting to realize that they miss the human interaction. They want to be able to talk to someone face to face. To do that while still playing challenging games, and have something to eat and drink at the same time is becoming more and more and more popular.

It is helpful that Board Game Island is reputed to have the best coffee on the Strand, carrying a variety of specialty coffees. They also have an array of craft beer. One of their suppliers is Galveston Island Brewery, a local brewery on Stewart Road. On tap, they have Austin East Sides, St. Arnolds, and Buffalo Bayou Ginger Bread South, an excellent dark beer.

A great snack to go with their drink selection is a Texas-size pretzel. For those who want good food that can be eaten while playing, they can order freshly made pizza, club sandwiches including toasted BLT, or Board Game Island’s own pizza sandwich.

If the idea that learning unfamiliar new games may be somewhat daunting, the friendly waitstaff/game tenders will help you select and learn a game before taking your food and drink order.

The games are included free with the purchase of food or drink. Otherwise, there is a nominal charge for playing.

Fortunately, when Debra bought the business most of the amenities were in place. It just needed a thorough two-week cleaning and paint job. A few added touches, like the loveseat and coffee table, allowed them to create a Victorian nook, adding to the atmosphere as well as the decor.

Their customer base is about 50/50 tourists and locals. Many of the locals range from students at UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch) and TAMUG (Texas A&M University Galveston) to people looking for something that the entire family can enjoy together and retirees who want a quiet night out in a non-smoking environment.

Smokers can sit outside at the two tables provided, one under the shade of an umbrella. The other is usually laden with a chess board and too many passersby stop to watch the action to allow for an umbrella. The tourists mostly are awaiting

their cruise embarkation or taking in the sights after returning. Of course, added to that are tourists who take a day from the beach and explore the Strand. Since Board Game Island is just off the Strand, they attract many of these tourists.

Being in the core of downtown means that their busiest times occur when a special event such as Dickens on the Strand, the Lone Star Rally, and Mardi Gras, are in full throttle. At other times they have live music and drink specials for their customers, but it is the gaming aspect that is the attraction.

In the near future, they plan to add to their game inventory for sale to customers. This will take some added construction to accommodate the games and books, but they are already looking at various ways to accomplish this.

They are also planning a Ghost Event in conjunction with Dash Beardsley. There will be a paranormal investigation for which raffle tickets may be purchased while playing Mysterium, eating a little and drinking a little.

Debra is convinced that the building is haunted. One day, she had been going over her statements in the kitchen area with her accountant when they heard a weird sound. They went out to investigate and found that the fridge door had opened by itself. They thought it to be just coincidence and went back into the kitchen to continue their deliberations. Within a short time, they heard a loud ‘poof’ and went back to investigate. A draft beer tap had mysteriously opened flooding beer all over the floor. Debra and her accountant concluded that something unearthly was helping itself to food and beer.

Board Game Island is located at 213, 23rd Street just south of The Strand and around the corner from the Tremont Hotel in Downtown Galveston. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday 12 noon10pm, Friday-Saturday 12 noon-12 midnight, Sunday 12 noon-10pm, and closed on Mondays.

The Bryan Museum, located in the historic Galveston Orphans Home at 1315 21st St., houses The Bryan Collection, one of the world’s largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West. Ongoing - “Eyes of Texas: A Century of Artistic Visions” Special Exhibit - The Bryan Collection holds hundreds of paintings relating to Texas.

Each was selected per a basic criterion: the artist had to understand Texas through lived experience. According to J.P. Bryan, founder of the Bryan Museum, “[Each artist] actually participated in the events of the settlement of Texas, those who saw it at its fullest expression or, at

the very least, while the dust was still settling on that unique chapter of United States history.”

“Eyes of Texas” provides the chance to see the evolving artistic visions that helped to shape Texas. By focusing on the years between 1850 and 1950, these works highlight the artistic search for a regional identity. Each painting serves as both a window and a mirror—a window to view the past and a mirror to reflect on personal experience.

Bishop’s Palace Tours The Bishop’s Palace (a.k.a. Gresham House) is recognized as one of America’s finest examples of Victorian exuberance and Gilded-Age extravagance and is listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. Historic Wood Paver from Galveston’s Market Street During the month of January, Rosenberg

Library will exhibit an original wooden block used for paving Galveston’s Market Street during the 1870’s. The block was a gift of Kathleen Bracken.

Paving Market Street

In 1874, Galveston’s Board of Aldermen began accepting bids for the paving of Market Street (Avenue D), one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. One of the bids came from R.W. Trundy, owner of Galveston Creosoting Works, a manufacturer of railroad ties. He proposed using yellow-pine pavers treated with creosote for the project.

Creosote is a substance derived from the distillation of coal and wood tar. It functioned as a preservative to make lumber more resistant to pressure and water and was most commonly used for railroad and marine applications.

Several Alderman had reservations about whether the newly patented process was effective and if would be adequate for heavy traffic.

Although creosoted wood paving was common in the northern United States at the time, it was not widely used in the South. In the end, the Board

voted to approve the use of creosoted wood pavement. These pavers lasted until the early 1900s when Market Street was repaved. This time, brick was the pavement of choice throughout the city, and the creosoted wooden blocks were removed.

One of the blocks was salvaged and marked with an identifying plaque in 1909. It is now preserved in the museum collection at the Rosenberg Library.

Island State Park New Year’s Fun Run/ Walk – Start the new year with some fun, some exercise, and some beautiful nature.

The event will be held at the Galveston Island State Park on the bay side of FM 3005, near 13-mile road. There will be 5k and 10k walks and runs. There will also be a 1k for kids under 12. Moody Mansions - Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure was completed in 1895. Today, guests can visit 20 rooms on a tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance, and hotels. W.L Moody, Jr. bought the home from the heirs of the original owners soon after the great hurricane of 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Moody and their four children celebrated the first of more than eighty Christmas seasons in the house in December of that year. The house remained home for Moody family members until 1986. Today, its rooms are filled with the furnishings and personal effects of the family.

NOAA Fisheries - Since 1978, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has been participating in an international Sea Turtle recovery program. As part of this program sea turtles are housed in Galveston, nursed to healthy states, then released. See these turtles live at NOAA, 4700 Avenue U. Call (409)766-3500 for reservations. These tours are very popular and fill up quickly.

Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum - The only facility of its kind in the world, the Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum is not only three stories of dynamic exhibits and information regarding the oil industry, it also serves as the training grounds for many people making their entrance into the world of offshore drilling. The Ocean Star is open daily 10am-5pm, with the last ticket sold at 4pm. Self-guided tours can be accompanied by an optional audio narrative via portable listening device. Texas Seaport Museum - This harborside museum tells the story of Galveston’s days as one of the busiest and most influential commercial ports of the 19th century, which was also the era when Galveston had surpassed Ellis Island in the number of immigrants coming to America through the Harbor. The Galveston Immigration Database stores digital records of nearly 150,000 immigrants who arrived to the United States via Galveston. Galveston’s Own Farmers Market Moves Its Thursday Market to Bryan Museum

I love food. Better known from Shaggy on Scooby Doo,“There’s nothing I love more than food unless it’s more food.” Food is one of the best ways to bond with people. You laugh, exchange stories, share food, and enjoy the environment. It’s a great way to be adventurous and explore some of the great popular vote restaurants, or find some interesting hole-in-the-wall places. I’ve recently realized that Galveston has a lot of hidden gems located just along The Strand. Karen Vaden and her family, have concocted the perfect way to explore all of the wonderful food that The Strand has to offer:- “Taste of The Strand” (TOTS). With a 3-hour walking tour of nothing but good company and food,“Taste of The Strand” is just what you’re looking for.

One year, for Karen’s husband’s birthday, they took a trip to New Orleans where they did a history, swamp, and food tour. When they returned home, Karen thought, “You know, in the history of Galveston Island, why on earth has someone not thought of doing a food tour! With as many restaurants that are from scratch and locally owned. Why not?” What really kicked them into gear, was when her son came home from serving in the military and had no luck finding work.

Karen wanted to create something that they could not only retire on but that would provide jobs for veterans.

In March of 2017, “TOTS” was born. The tour begins at Hendley Green Park and stops at places such as Nonno Tony’s, Shrimp N’ Stuff, Yaga’s Grill, and more. Tours are twice a day every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1-4pm and then again at 5-8pm, rain or shine.

They do require one day in advance booking with a maximum of 16 people. If it’s a private booking, the maximum increase to 20 people at most.

Their goal is to work together with each of these eateries, bringing business to not only themselves, but also to provide loyal returning customers to

the restaurants.

Karen and her family bring something to table that I’ve personally never encountered - they bring a sense of family to the atmosphere. They make you feel comfortable, at home, and almost as if you’ve known them for awhile. They love giving theses tours because they want to expose those “hidden gems” you might miss.

They want to show everyone that Galveston is more than just the beach. The history of Galveston is undeniable. It’s everywhere and everyone is aware of all the ghost stories and flood stories, but Karen doesn’t want this business to be another history or ghost tour. As she says, “We’re more designed around the food and the mystery of the Island rather than the history.” They strive to set themselves apart and bring a uniqueness to the table that makes people feel relaxed and have fun.

With the new year brings the next phase of TOTS - more food, more stops, and more fun.

This Month at Galveston Arts Center On Exhibit Through January 7th

Galveston Arts Center (GAC) has three exhibitions up this month till January 7th. In the first floor gallery, Galveston-based artist Dan Schmahl’s exhibition, “Surfer’s Beach,” references his favorite surf spot through the re-creation of a lifeguard stand, photographs, video, and printed materials.

In the second-floor 1878 Gallery, the exhibition “Entanglement” features paintings of the undergrowth of forests and tree knots by Joan Laughlin.

In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Motoyuki Noguchi and Toshimichi Minagawa of the Taiguruma Revival Project based in Galveston’s sister-city, Niigata, Japan, reintroduce the lost art of Japanese fish cart lanterns through an installation incorporating lanterns and a radio broadcast of messages from visitors to the exhibition Taiguruma Radio Station.

These exhibitions will remain on view through January 7th, 2018.

Galveston Arts Center (GAC) presents three exhibitions opening Saturday, January 13th, 6-9pm, with artist talks beginning at 6:30pm.

In the first-floor gallery, the Dallas-based collective “The Color Condition” transforms the first-floor gallery through a site-specific installation made from plastic streamers for their exhibition “Premium Quality.”

Known for their playful and immersive environments created from a variety of plastic and lightweight fabrics, “The Color Condition” aims to make work that calls attention to the sites where they are installed. Drawn to repetition, patterns, color, and the natural motion of wind, “The Color Condition” transforms synthetic materials into installations that mimic objects found in the natural environment. Their exhibition, “Premium Quality,” explores a symbolic collision of the internal and external components of their installations, done and undone, to reveal their hidden woven structures.

In the second-floor 1878 Gallery, Cary Reeder presents a new series of paintings and cut paper works for the exhibition “Impermanence.”

“Impermanence” is an exhibition from a new series of paintings and cut-paper works by Houston artist Cary Reeder. Feeling unmoored by a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in 2014, Reeder began this series as a means to explore themes of loss and renewal using nature-based imagery as her muse. With “Impermanence,” Reeder interprets trees, hands, paths, and portals through bright, highly-saturated paintings and cut-paper painted collage works.

Reeder describes her personal relationship with the subject of these works as “a metaphor for my hands and fingers, their craggy knots resembling my joints and veiny lines mimicking mine, and the paths that they shade, symbolic of a journey with an unknown end.” Having primarily exhibited paintings in her past, these new cut-paper works mark a new direction in her practice.

In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Michael Golden’s exhibition, “0-Connected,” features a series of collages made from images he has culled from the past 30 years of his studio practice.

Michael Golden’s exhibition, “0-Connected,” includes collages created from images he has collected over the past 30 years of his studio practice. After retiring from teaching in 2016, Golden began sorting through his archive of images. The resulting works document his life experiences, personal associations, and play with visual metaphor through imagery pulled from science, nature and geometry. Golden’s life experiences of coming out, his varied medical history, travels, and teaching are clipped and juxtaposed with representations of forgiveness, oneness, family, and gender identity. Golden’s perception of space is altered by blindness in his right eye, with these collages offering viewers insight into his two-dimensional world.

GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information, and map can be downloaded at galvestonartscenter.org.

The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12 noon-5pm.

January 6th (1-3pm) - Poetry Reading & Picnic with Joshua Edwards - Join Galveston Arts Center (GAC) and the Galveston Artist Residency (GAR) for a Saturday afternoon poetry reading and picnic with author and poet Joshua Edwards. Beginning at 1pm, Edwards will read poems he refers to as “lamps” at GAC. Following the reading at GAC, visitors are invited to proceed to GAR (2521 Mechanic Street) for a BYO beverage, blanket and snacks picnic, where Edwards will read an excerpt from his soon-to-be released epic poem titled “Agonistes.”

January 20th (10am4pm) - Polymer Clay Workshop: Making Beads Using a Polymer Clay Extruder - Paula Kennedy will host this workshop (bring a bag lunch). Learn techniques for making beads using a polymer clay extruder. Bring a work surface and pasta machine if you have them. Toaster ovens provided.

Tuition is $75. This is part of an ongoing, seasonal workshop series at Galveston Arts Center. Future workshop are: May 5th: Polymer Clay and Rubber Stamps; July 21st: Imitation Stone Beads: Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise and Coral.

January 27th (1-4pm) - Exhibit Connect: “Collages with Michael Golden and Christine West” - These one-day workshops are offered on weekends during most exhibits and include an exhibit tour. The workshop is taught by the exhibiting artist, or by a professional working in a related theme or topic. Time, duration and fees vary by exhibit, and RSVP is required. Kids under 10 are welcome to attend with a parent.

Open Studio Night - Select Fridays 5-7pm, GAC hosts a casual open-studio session in the spacious Studio Classroom. Bring a project to work on or use some of the basic art materials provided for a self-guided activity. Enjoy the company and inspiration of fellow artists as well as music and refreshments as you unwind from your week. Open to adults and teens. “Never a Dull Moment: The Art of The Grace Spaulding John” exhibit, “Never a Dull Moment: The Art

of Grace Spaulding John” will have a Preview on January 20th, 6-8pm, in the Harris Gallery on the 4th floor. There will be a guest lecture

by Randy Tibbits which will begin at 6:30pm in the Fox Room. This exhibit will be shown through July 20th.

About the Artist

A well-known artist in Houston and Galveston, Grace Spaulding John (1890-1972) studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the Art Students League in New York City, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Upon returning to Texas, she married Alfred Morgan John, a prominent attorney and the great-grandson of Sam Houston.

John was one of the first artists – male or female – to have a solo showing at the Museum of Fine Arts. Examples of her work can be found in numerous national collections including that of the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of the City New York.

Spaulding John was adept in many mediums – oil, dry-point, lithography, pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor, block print, and plexiglass.

A hallmark of her work was her use of natural brown linen for her canvases, sizing it first with rabbit skin glue, a technique she learned from Hawthorne.

She painted over 125 portraits, among them Thomas Mann, Edgar Lee Masters, and Oveta Culp Hobby dressed in her uniform as first commander of the WAACS. Affaire d’Art (2227 Postoffice St., Suite B, (409)789-0079, affairedart.com) - January 13th from 5-10pm January's ArtWalk will feature “Architecturally Speaking,” a show celebrating the ideas of design, buildings, open areas, communities, construction, and other environments. They will also be showcasing new works from the entire group of artists in a wide range of mediums and styles.

ArtWalk will be held throughout town, ranging in time from 4-10pm. This event is held mostly in the heart of the downtown historic district, and now other parts of the Island. ArtWalk is a free event that takes place in existing commercial galleries, non-profit art spaces, and what are called “other walls:” restaurants, and retail stores.

Throughout her lifetime Billie planned to pursue her love of creating art upon her retirement. Presently, Billie prefers painting landscapes and still life subjects. Her favorite subjects are Galveston Island and Bay, as well as studies from her travels.

In addition to watercolors, she also enjoys painting with acrylics and oil, drawing portraits, and occasionally creating scratchboard art.

January 7th (2-5pm) Come out for this unique workshop with a bunch of talented writers south of Houston that are interested in starting an informal Songwriter Group. The Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe in Galveston has agreed to let this group “gather” this day. The Songwriters are discussing doing an unplugged, “In-The-Round” as well. The purpose will be to share your songs, old or new, with fellow writers. They are hoping to create a supportive environment where you can trade ideas, network, solicit constructive feedback, and

develop relationships. Amazing pro musicians in the area are ready, willing, and able to come and do workshops, too. Old Quarter is tossing around ideas to bring in those who perform regularly. Everything is still in the discussion stage so your input is much needed. Come out and give us your opinion plus be a part of creating these amazing events.
