Food Jimmy’s On The Pier: 13 September 2008 By Terry Card

The howling wind barreled down out of the black sky in full fury, lifting the surging water to unimagined heights. Slowly, it began tearing at the tin and clapboard bake shop, exposed on the landward side of the long fishing pier until, in a great rush, it was destroyed, utterly and completely. Not yet satisfied, Hurricane Ike created a storm surge the like of which had not been seen since the beginning of the 1900’s. It pummeled the concrete pier, tearing out the wooden decking and heaving great sections into the churning Gulf waters. It was only four months prior, that Jimmy and Kelli McClure had put much of their life savings into purchasing the pier and bait shop. This terrible misfortune, striking at a time when businesses are most vulnerable, would have been devastating for all but the brightest of optimists. As Jimmy said, “Prior to purchasing the fishing pier and bait shop, and renewing the land lease with the Texas General Land Office for the land on which the pier sits, and after selling our property business, I thought that the biggest challenge in life would be hauling in trophy fish and relaxing in the sun. Then, the opportunity to buy the pier emerged. It took us only nine days to decide to discard the relaxing bit, and buy the business on the pier, which was already an ongoing concern. It had been my intent to continue running the business as is – then Hurricane Ike changed everything! I simply viewed it as an opportunity to make the business better.” Fortunately, they had insured the pier and bait shop fully with some coverage to spare which was fortuitous as delays caused by lost permitting plans submitted to the city and cost overruns which occur in most construction projects were finally able to be overcome. It took 2 years to rebuild the pier and create the restaurant and gift shop which now exists. Jimmy says, “I was heavily involved in the reconstruction, but two years is a long time to live with no income. Fortunately, my wife who is a real estate broker came to the rescue. Without her, I don’t know……” As many locals who watched the ongoing pier reconstruction recognize, the pier rebuilding was done in two phases. We watched in awe as piles were driven from floating pile driving boats into the sandy bottom of the Gulf, then beams were connected to the columns, decking was installed and finally railings and lighting completed section by section. Income generated from the first phase and a bank loan allowed the second phase to be completed out to the pier not devastated by Ike, which runs perpendicular to the newly rebuilt long pier. The perpendicular pier of course, had to be extensively reconstructed, but structurally it had withstood the pounding surge. Jimmy McClure was born in Dallas. His parents are Southerners, his mother from Mobile and his father from Oklahoma.

They worked with various defense contractors, ending their careers with Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth. Jimmy settled in Galveston after completing a degree in marine biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston where he was introduced by a friend to his future wife Kelli at Molly’s Irish Pub on Postoffice. Married eighteen years, they have a daughter 10 years old and a two year old son. Seventy-five percent of Jimmy’s customer base are tourists, but of course, this fluctuates with the season. In the cooler, off season, locals prevail and are kept snug in the fully enclosed restaurant by a blazing fireplace and warming heater. When they first purchased the business, Jimmy estimates that between 65,000-75,000 people would go out on the pier to fish or just walk along taking in the view, especially at sunset. Today that number has grown to about 120,000. Anyone who eats in the restaurant receives a band which allows them to venture out onto the pier for free. Just be sure to wear closed toe shoes. On a net basis, the pier and the restaurant/gift shop business contribute equally. Fishing on the pier is very popular and has resulted in record catches including the largest ever 30-pound puffer fish, and a State record 220 pound Tarpin, which took five big men to lift from the water to the deck. Jimmy and Kelli love Galveston, and Galvestonians love their restaurant and the fishing access at Jimmy’s On The Pier. That doesn’t mean there are never things to work out. They are presently working with the City to level the playing field for businesses like theirs and the ones in the Strand downtown district whose customers have to pay for parking, because providing free off-street parking is impossible for them given their location. Stretching from Seawall Boulevard out into the warm waters of the Gulf, Jimmy’s Restaurant and Fishing Pier immediately attracts the attention of those staying in nearby hotels or those just passing by. It has a sense of adventure about it, with an expectation that the view will be unique. And the views are exciting, especially at sunrise and sunset. But, even during the day, it is great to have a drink at the fully stocked bar while watching the fishermen struggling with their catch, or baiting their hooks, or deciding which lure to use. Add to all of that, there is the good, wholesome Southern food, like the specialty fresh fish tacos made with locally caught grouper. Lunch and any quick meals include hamburgers, fries, and chicken nuggets. For breakfast, Jimmy’s serves delicious coffee with real cream in big cups, followed by a choice of tamales and eggs, waffles, scones, burritos, biscuits or migas. Aside from local seafood, all other meat and produce is grown naturally, pesticide free and hormone free at McClure Farms. Located at 9001 Seawall Boulevard across from the Premier Movie Theater and close to many hotels including the Holiday Inn Express, The Marriott, La Quinta, and the brand new Best Western Plus, Jimmy’s can be reached by calling (409)974-4726. This is a restaurant, gift shop and fishing complex that is unique to Galveston and in turn, helps make Galveston unique. Whether a local or a visitor - it is a must on your to do list!

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market Gets Bigger and Better Galveston’s Own Farmers Market (GOFM) opened in October 2012 in a humble downtown parking lot behind Antiques Warehouse with a quaint view of a community garden, a greenhouse and a back alley. It took many hard hours, days and months of work to prove to this island that GOFM was here to stay, and even more to convince this community a small farmers’ market was worth your Sunday morning. Now, GOFM has many loyal customers and a steadfast showing of vendors selling handmade and locally-grown foods including ripe tomatoes plucked off the vine, lettuces cut that morning, effervescent kombucha bottled the day before, golden honey from bees foraging off local tallow, palm and wildflowers, and melt-in-your-mouth sourdough baked only hours earlier in the wee hours of the morning. The rising trend of local farmers markets is old news - from 2006 to 2014, the number of markets in the United States rose from 1,765 to more than 8,268. While that number is impressive, it’s important to ask - how many of these markets survive? And moreover - how many thrive? GOFM is lucky to have grown stronger in the 4 years since opening - due to intentional slow growth and the loyalty of local customers, this ‘little-market-that-could’ hasn’t met the same end as so many other newly-established markets across the country. It was this strong support base and a wish to meet the demands of the larger community that led to the most recent change for GOFM. This April, GOFM became a 2 day-a-week market with the addition of a new GOFM location in Menard Park on Thursday afternoons, 3-7pm. Nestled next to the McGuire Dent Recreation Center and a kiddie splashpad, skatepark and of course, a community garden, this new spot feels just right, complete with a seabreeze. If you live off-island but work in Galveston during the week - this weekday afternoon market is for you. If our Sunday hours coincide with church services - the Thursday market is for you. If a lazy, homebound Sunday morning is important to your wellbeing - this new market is for you. Need another reason to shop at the new Thursday market? All the programs developed at GOFM that help low-income families are available at the new Thursday market as well! The Fresh Bucks program offers a free $15 boost to customers using SNAP benefits (formerly known as foodstamps) for the purchase of fresh produce. Fresh Bucks is offered at both GOFM markets, and is available to customers week after week. Another initiative, the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), supplies free $30 vouchers to families using WIC benefits, also for the purchase of more fresh fruits and vegetables for growing families who need an extra hand. GOFM has plans to stay and make eating fresh, delicious, and local the new normal - and you can consider yourself invited to the party! Galveston’s Own Farmers Market Thursdays, 3-7pm: 2222 28th St. Sundays, 9am-12 noon: 2508 Post Office St. www.galvestonsownfarmersmarket.com

When you visit the Strand area, immediately outside the Cruise ship Terminal, and the great white walls of the ships lined up form both the backdrop and the horizon, as they line up on the wharves at The Port of Galveston. Just onto the Strand is The Railroad Museum, a new retail/parking garage and The Strand Art Gallery. Additionally, there is the newly located Old Strand Emporium, a pioneer business to the Strand, along with La King’s Confectionery. All of this is in the first two city blocks. When you look east down the Strand corridor there is a seemingly endless line of shops, galleries, boutiques and places of curiosity and finery of every type. Walking around the Strand area, you will always run into someone, somewhere, eating, and drinking and having way too much fun. But first you will notice that there’s a sound emanating from down the street in the distance. It’s a distinctively cool sound; faint but recognizable. It’s a sound of musical notes wafting out on to the light summer breeze mingled with the sounds of laughter and revelry. The sound is both familiar and unmistakable. Somebody, somewhere, is having way too good a time! One is immediately drawn down the street and compelled to investigate further, to know from whence these sounds originate. Alas, there is some music and merriment to be had on “Ye Old Strand,” The National Historic Landmark District, home to the reknown festivals such as Dicken’s on the Strand, now in its fourth decade, the world’s largest biker event, The Lone Star Rally, and that one other small street party that starts out small and eventually spills out over all of Galveston Island and the upper Texas Coast… Mardi Gras Galveston. The sounds are coming from Crow’s Southwest Cantina Bar and Grill. Yup, it is, in a word: “Partytime,” and that translates to “anytime” at Crows. Located mid-block between 24th and 25th Streets, nestled among the other old buildings, lies Crow’s Southwest Cantina Bar and Grill. Crow’s is an excellent place for people watching, drinking’, and fun. Crow’s has become well known to locals and cruise ship passengers for some of the best live music on the Island and for its excellent Strand location, literally steps from the Cruise Terminal. Usually, you can expect a mix of people old, young, and in between. The establishment features live rock, blues, jazz, a little bit of alternative country, and alternative bands on the weekends, and it is a people-friendly place with a wide assortment of clientele. Generally, there is a mix of people old and young, with musical tastes that span from between 60’s & 70’s rock and R&B to the latest covers. There is even open mic nights and karaoke during week nights. So, if you think you are ready to be on “American Idol” or “The Voice,” just bring it! Crow’s great enthusiastic staff will take care of all your needs and you can even ask them about other places to see and visit while you are on beautiful Galveston Island, they don’t mind sharing because that’s just what we do here living on “Island Time.” Crow’s Southwest Cantina offers a wonderfully spacious cool and shady break from the summer heat, along with an enormous variety of icey cold ones and satisfying wines. Crow’s offers a full menu of great food and munchies, so ask for a menu when you hit the door. Owner Diane Flores is “BOI,” which translates to Born On the Island and is one of a family of entrepreneurs that have contributed

greatly to the development of The Strand Historic District and its environs. The Strand got its beginning years ago, when someone said, “Hey, you know we have a lot of really beautiful old buildings down here that someone should just fix up, make happy noises, and they will come.” And voila, they sure did come and continue to come daily by the thousands. Crow’s Southwest Cantina service is good and not necessarily too fancy, but who needs fancy when you’re in shorts and flip flops. It’s hot in the summer so get ready to find some shade and some cool. You can even leave your shades on indoors, because it’s fashionable here to look hip! Crow’s features live music five nights a week and all day on the weekends. It’s a place where you will always find music: either a few serious musicians ready to lay down some sweet chords and howling in your ear guitar riffs, or perhaps some musicians lightly strumming their guitars and having a cold beer. Either way, you can sit inside or at one of the sidewalk table, relax and just listen. I recently caught The Holland K. Smith Band, and they were playing some awesome Rock-a-billy, bluesy, funky stuff. I will go back to see them next time they drop in. There are always some really great sounds coming out of Crow’s Southwest Cantina. Some Cool Reads for Summer By Gini Rainey

“The Space Between” by Cynthia Boone

Okay, I’ll admit it – I have become hooked on Boone’s writings! This book, perfect for a break from the heat of summer, is about two starcrossed lovers who meet in college and fall crazy in love (aren’t they all?) With great plans for a life-time together, Carter James and Savannah Davis come within a few feet of the altar. Carter is hit with some devastating news and leaves Savannah at the altar. Thinking he is doing the right thing, Carter goes to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country and western musical artist, while Savannah tries to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and move on. Because Boone does such a great job of fleshing out her characters, I think you will find this a most intriguing read, even though there are a few scenarios that push a bit past believable. With a ton of plot twists and turns, you’ll find yourself being scooped up in all of the drama and romance – oh yes, and a bit of mystery thrown in for good measure. All in all, this is another good read you won’t be able to put down, as well as something that will help you make it through the summer heat, whether you are seeking comfort in you AC, on your patio, or at the beach. on the vulnerable like his son. This book is written from an omniscient point of view, which is fitting for the topic. It’s as if the author is looking downcall on the scene, describing the details of the events and telling about the characters involved, but without their personal emotion. There is a large cast, and Sully is probably the closest to a main character as you can get, but he doesn’t stand out much above the rest. I would definitely call this a plot-driven, rather than character-driven, novel. That’s not to say, though, that the characters suffer from not being fleshed out. There is just enough characterization for the reader to develop a certain empathy for the primary figures in the story. It’s impossible not to feel something when reading about the topic of death and afterlife - particularly when it challenges your mind and faith, which this book certainly does. An interesting aspect of this book is the way Albom interspersed interesting facts and tidbits about Alexander Graham Bell, along with other communication-related information. Combined with the main plot, it made the historical facts seem fresh, unique, and relevant for today. Albom has crafted a powerful and page-turning tale. I spent the first three-quarters wondering how in the world the story would play out, and the twist at the end was a pleasant surprise. I must admit that when I picked up this book, I was looking forward to a good read, but before too long I was swept up in the mysteries involved behind the phone calls. I think you will be, too. characters did and how they dealt with everyday life. About halfway through the book I felt I knew where the plot was headed, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. This story offers a painfully honest glimpse into grief and how to begin living again by letting go of the person you lost so you can find your way back to the life you should be living. As Luke began uncovering unimaginable secrets, he also the discovered truths that forced him back to living again. A lot of his discoveries were made possible through the letters that Natalie had arranged to be delivered at certain times following her death. Although the storyline became confusing at times, it was a story that I was so anxious to continue reading to the end that I couldn’t put it down. Author Elise H. From philanthropy to volunteer work, each of these women was eager to use her talents in service to city, state and country. Anecdotes, letters, journal entries, and personal photographs illustrate the importance of the women and provide insight into the Kempners’ traditions and beliefs, their way of life and the oftendramatic times in which they lived. Stephens presents over a dozen of the women-some calm and collected, some bold and brash, all fascinating. As new generations of this strong family emerge as mainstays of Galveston, Texas and beyond, this well-researched and engaging history creates a window into both the formation and the perpetuation of a significant dynasty.

“Seeds of Empire” Book Club Discussion

By the late 1810’s, a global revolution in cotton had remade the U.S.-Mexico border, bringing wealth and waves of Americans to the Gulf Coast while also devastating the lives and villages of Mexicans in Texas. In response, Mexico threw open its northern territories to American farmers in hopes that cotton could bring prosperity to the region. Thousands of Anglo-Americans poured into Texas, but their insistence that slavery accompany them sparked pitched battles across Mexico. An extraordinary alliance of Anglos and Mexicans in Texas came together to defend slavery against abolitionists in the Mexican government, beginning a series of fights that culminated in the Texas Revolution. This book discussion will be held at 1838 Michel B. Menard House, 3302 Avenue O. Free to attend.

“A Little Weekend Time Traveling”

At Visker & Scriveners Handcrafted Quills, Books and Oddities Written and Photographed by Michael Alan Basham

One steps off of the warmer westward exposure of the more modern day Victorian Tremont Street sidewalk into the wonderfully cooler shady quaintness of an elegant little shop assisted gratefully by “Ye old air conditioner.” It is immediately as though you have been transported even further back in time in H.G. Well’s own time machine and have landed smack dab in the middle of William Shakespeare’s 15th Century medieval England. It is not until Taylor Lauryn greets you in a polite, enthusiastic but modern day speak, that you realize that you are still at least somewhat in the present period…at least somewhat. You are standing in a place in many ways akin to some ancient apothecary or some lair of an early scribe, surrounded by delicate instruments, brightly lighted against rich colors and textures and in hand-tanned leathers and tung oiled warm woods. Alas, on the wall above is a Certificate of Authenticity, so to speak. A finely illuminated specimen of fine penmanship elegantly framed and positioned as if to authorize the very presence of this establishment. It is an accolade heralding a former age bearing the name of the owner’s ancestry, who were themselves masters of the craft of word styling, illumination and delicately crafted calligraphy. It is a more modern day word, a sign of “Street Cred,” and it just quietly seems to state that “I have been here for many hundreds of years, and I was painstakingly and artfully trained in this all but lost craft of the hand.“ Me thinks it doth profess, but not too loudly, the official nature of this establishment drawing all those inspired, and artfully trained in the tradition handed down and who have officially, or otherwise been ordained to write inspired things and to write them beautifully, in a hand that speaks of the wisdom and knowledges of the enlightened ages. No muse hath ever had greater tools than these to express verse and prose. The establishment is owned by husband and wife team Julie Bersinger and Brian “Visker” Mahanney, and here you will find fine feathered quills and inks in well-presented box sets, along with scrolls, books of fine binding and other delicate things, along with hand milled papers and parchments for the doing of letters and intimate thoughts. Julie and Brian also participate in The Renaissance Festival and other similar festivals and shows around the New World Continent. On the finely carved hanging street shingle (sign) proudly and prominently reads Handcrafted Quills & Oddities. Well, I was keenly on guard and always scouting about for the “oddities.” Let us just say that none stood out more than a real, yes real, two-headed duckling wearing a little wire hat, that without a doubt, was the most curious specimen that any taxidermist has ever stuffed and puffed. In all, I personally thought it was just as “cute as The Dickens,” but with that, I knew it was time for me to step back through the looking glass and into the present

day. Back to my computer and keyboard, and ye old spell check and record it all quickly before it all became blurry on my re-entry to the present day world. Visker & Scriveners is located at 406 23rd Street on the street level, western exposure of The National Hotel Artists’ Lofts (NHAL), otherwise known as the home of The National Weather Service Building of Isaac Cline’s 1900 Storm. The shop is situated right next to the newly opened Proletariat Gallery and Public’s House which corners at 23rd and Market Streets. The shop is open Thursday through Sunday, 11am-4pm. Mahanney and Bersinger are also partner in Proletariat, along with NAHL Creative Director and building manager Becky Major. and his comments have appeared in “The New York Times,” the “Washington Post,” “60 Minutes” and many Texas newspapers and magazines. When Republican congressman Tom DeLay was first indicted in October 2005, many commentators predicted that he would bounce back politically; Schwartz, however, told the “New York Times” that “He’s been gut-shot politically,” and was proven right. As a legislator, he specialized in legislation to protect the environment and manage the resources of coastal areas, and earned a reputation as a fiery liberal speaker and a wit. In Molly Ivins’s book “Molly Ivins Can’t Say That, Can She?” Ivins referred to Schwartz as a “whitemaned pixie” and called him one of the legislature’s “excellent orators.” Reporter Patricia Kilday Hart referred to Schwartz in the “Houston Chronicle” “as one of the most liberal, yellowdog Democrats ever to serve in the Texas Legislature.” In “[Confessions of a Maddog: A Romp Through the High-Flying Texas Music and Literary Era of the Fifties to the Seventies]”, Jay

Dunston Milner referred to Schwartz, along with Bob Eckhardt, John Henry Faulk, Maury Maverick, Jr. and others, as being among those in the 1960s who “fought the good fight against the Philistines. They lost most of the time, of course--the Philistines were in the majority. But they won a skirmish here and a point there, anyway, which was better than nothing.” “Texas Monthly” took note, stating that during the sixties and seventies, the best entertainment the Capitol had to offer was the oratory of Galveston senator A. R. “Babe” Schwartz. Schwartz was also named one of the “Ten Best Legislators” by “Texas Monthly” four times. The first time, in 1973, the magazine called him “the most complex, remarkable man in the Senate” and “one of the most consistently influential members.” As a legislator, Schwartz was known for his spirited feuds, in particular with fellow state senators William T. “Bill” Moore of Bryan, called “the Bull of the Brazos” and William Neff Patman, son of former U.S. Representative Wright Patman. In a dispute with Hilmar Moore, the longtime mayor of Richmond, Texas, over Moore’s appointment to the state’s Public Welfare Board, Schwartz said, “You can have that job over my dead body.” Moore replied, “Senator, I can’t think of any other way I’d rather have it.” In the 1979 legislative session he helped lead the “Killer Bees,” a group of state senators who brought the legislature to a standstill by going into hiding and breaking the Senate quorum. During his tenure as a lawmaker, he served on every major committee of the legislature, and served as the chairman of the Rules, Jurisprudence and Natural Resources Committees. In September 2008, he was quoted in “The New York Times” on the subject of damage to Galveston from Hurricane Ike and other hurricanes over the years. The 1900 Galveston hurricane that devastated Galveston, he said, was a “message from God.” He explained, “God’s message was, ‘man wasn’t meant to live on no island.’” In an “Associated Press” story after Hurricane Ike about the fact that the 1959 Texas Open Beaches Act, a state law protecting public access to beaches might cause some Galvestonarea homes to be seized by the state, Schwartz said, “We’re talking about fools that have built houses on the edge of the sea for as long as man could remember and against every advice anyone has given.” That story, in turn, led to an attack on Schwartz by radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, who said, “You know, folks, it’s one thing to be smacked by a natural disaster; it’s quite another to have to be smacked around by the government that you’re looking to for help.” His oral history for the “Texas Legacy Project” is featured on the project’s site and in a 2010 book published from those interviews. “Given the number of things that A.R. “Babe” Schwartz has done for Galveston, this beach dedication was a long time coming,” Mayor Jim Yarbrough said, standing in front of a new sign bearing Schwartz’s name. “We should have done this for Babe Schwartz many years ago,” he continued. “We don’t know how to really say thank you. You’ve given a lifetime of commitment not only to Galveston and our community, but to this state.” So, get on down here soon and visit. “Babe Beach” is our newborn, and is waiting for you and your family to come take your turn and baby sit. Take good care of our new gem, located at Seawall Blvd. westward of 61st St., and keep her clean and safe for all to enjoy, for at least as long as A.R. Babe Schwartz has been a gallant public servant for all Texans, and that pardner, is a mighty long time!

“The Midtown Men”

Transcending language, culture, and age, “Scrap-Arts-Music” offers a highly physical, wildly theatrical, and thoroughly entertaining taste of the musical vanguard. Musician/ composer Gregory Kozak and architecturetrained Justine Murdy began their collaboration in 1998, creating 145+ tune-able, large-scale, mobile sculptural instruments artfully fashioned from industrial scrap and offbeat materials. They also developed an “action-choreography” style of movement reflective of Vancouver and the energy of percussion. Today, the “Scrap-ArtsMusic” ensemble creates unforgettable performances that are as visually striking as they are sonically riveting. Join audiences from around the world who have embraced this intoxicating mix of music, movement and spectacle!

This sensational production reunites Four Stars from the Original Cast of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys.” Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard, and Tony Award nominee J. “2 actors, 20 characters, 20 million laughs … Howlingly funny.” (“Variety”) “Greater Tuna” is an irreverently hilarious comedy about Texas’ third smallest town, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. All of the town’s eclectic residents are portrayed by only two performers, making this satire on life in rural America both crazy and delightful! Called “a good ol’ down-home laugh-out-loud fest” by DC Metro Theater Arts, the show has enjoyed worldwide success, including long-running engagements both on and Off-Broadway, and on HBO. Each performance will be followed with a Q & A with director Jaston Williams that’s bound to be as entertaining as the show.
