To Do Island ETC opens 16th Season with “9 to 5 The Musical”Island

ETC (East-End Theatre Company) is pleased and excited to open their 16th season with the hit musical comedy “9 to 5 The Musical” with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick. “9 to 5 The Musical” will open on Friday, July 6th with a funky fundraising fete. Performances will continue through Saturday, August 4th. “9 to 5 The Musical” is directed by Kim Mytelka with choreography by Jennifer Daugherty and musical direction by Sean Ramos. The production team also includes Nancy Dougherty

(costume design), Lisa Miller (light design), Tom Boone (scenic design), David Cooley (stage manager), and Kristin Bingley (asst. stage manager). Based on the 1980 hit musical of the same name, “9 to 5 The Musical” follows three unlikely friends (portrayed by Lisa Asby as Doralee, Katie Harrison as Judy, and Jennifer H. Salcich as Violet) as they take control of their office and learn there is nothing they can’t do – even in a ‘man’s world.’ Filled with Dolly Parton’s signature songs and overflowing with laughs, “9 to 5 The Musical” is about women breaking stereotypes and glass ceilings. This hysterical story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought provoking, a little romantic, and family friendly. Other members of this incredibly talented cast include Manny Berry, Calvin Brown, Terri Burchfield, Brandon Del Castillo, Hayley Dougherty, Kelsey Perkins, Robin Schaefer, Shonee Singer, Ryan Van Dewalli, Whitney Williams, and Kyle Wright. All performances will be at Island ETC, 2317 Mechanic, Downtown Galveston. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8pm. There are two Sunday matinees on July 15th and July 22nd at 2:30pm. Tickets for the grand opening night, Friday, July 6th are $60 each. This includes delicious treats donated by popular Galveston restaurants. Tickets for all other performances are $30 (adults) and $25 (students and seniors). Tickets may be purchased by visiting the website at islandetc.org or by calling the theatre box office at (409)762-3556. Take A Tour

S.I.T. on Local Art for Free Take a Walk or Ride It is always free to walk or ride your bike along the Seawall. At 10.3 miles long, the pavement atop the Galveston Seawall is said to be the longest continuous sidewalk in the United States. It is a great place to walk, jog, ride a bike and skateboard. And along the way, there are plenty of benches for people to take a break while counting the waves rolling in or watch the people pass by. These benches

have been transformed into stories of the Galveston area, transforming 70 Seawall benches into educational works of art. This unique project was an undertaking of Artist Boat where they enlisted area artists and schools to paint benches with scenic and educational topics pertaining to Galveston. These beautiful benches are educational works of art that depict the natural and cultural heritage of Galveston Island and the Gulf of Mexico. Locations, artists, and the sponsors behind the benches can be found at artistboat.org/project-sit. Galveston Famous Tree Sculptures On September 13th, 2008, Hurricane Ike covered most of the Island in a tidal surge. The damaging combination of powerful wind and waves immediately uprooted many trees, but ultimately the salty storm waters led to the demise of the thousands of others. Ike forced Galveston to say a sad goodbye to so much of its beautiful tree canopy. Months later sculpture artists breathed second life into something Mother Nature attempted to destroy. Whimsical sculptures have replaced the majestic oaks that once lined many neighborhood streets and shaded homes. Tucked into gardens and nestled in side yards the sculptures are there for the public to enjoy. Download the tree locations at galvestonislandguide.com/galveston-tree-sculptures or pick up a brochure from the Galveston Visitors Center. Free Tours of Remarkable History Download the free “Hotel Galvez” app and you can take a 25-minute history and 20-minute ghost narrated audio tour. Both tours are loaded with historic photos and are fun to use at Hotel Galvez or at your leisure off of the property. Also, if you are at the hotel, make sure to venture to the lower level to tour the Hall of History. It’s free and very cool. Also, you can browse the Downtown businesses on The Strand, do some window shopping and see the influence of our ancestors in this port community. Among those, some date back to the late 1800’s with historys as long as your arm, many of which survived the 1900 Storm, regarded as the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Rosenberg Library offers a several galleries and historic areas. Each month, they present a Treasure of the Month which is a memorable historic representation of the island’s history. The Treasure of the Month is located on the library’s second floor near the East Entrance. It can be viewed during regular library hours 9am9pm Monday-Thursday, and 9am6pm Friday and Saturday. For more info call (409)763-8854 x. 125 or visit the website.

Galleries Galore Galveston has a very active art community and this is proven by nearly 40 galleries being located on the island. They cover all styles from classic to modern to abstract as well as artists who will custom paint something for you. A few notable galleries are: Heard Gallery has recently moved to a new location on 25th St. in The Strand District. Owner/ artist Ray Heard can often be found creating artworks in the gallery and has developed several styles of painting during 30-years of dedication to life as an artist. You can hire Ray to create paintings from canvas of just about any scene you would like such as beach scenes, local home scenes, pelicans, spoonbills, abstracts, sail boats, and well......almost anything. Rene Wiley Gallery, located at 2128 Postoffice St., Downtown Galveston, has original paintings and wooden sculptures by James Phillips (the artist that created some of the tree sculptures). Rene’s distinctive style uses geometric patterns of light combines with her use of warm colors for the background, especially orange, which she overlays with cool colors. Her use of complementary colors and the thickness of her brush strokes create a very vibrant color palette. ArtWalk will be held July 14th and August 25th. Download a brochure of participating galleries at galvestonartscenter.com. ArtWalk is not a street festival, it takes place in existing commercial galleries, non-profit arts spaces and what are called “other walls”—restaurants and retail stores. It is free to browse all the galleries. Operation Kindness The wealth of eye-catching murals interspersed throughout the island embraces the lively whimsical art scene. Some of them are art deco, others are abstract and others border on the whimsical. But they all share the common quality: they expose Galveston’s vibrant art scene to the world and are free to see. At the corner of 22nd and Postoffice St., the beautiful mural is an homage to Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree,” the surfboard-shaped leaves connect one end of the artwork to the other as it wraps around the corner of the ground floor of the old McCrory Building. The keen observer will note a small hashtag hidden among the artwork: #c2bk, an acronym for “Cool to Be Kind,” which is the calling card of the Galveston Kindness Project. The mural is iconic for photo opportunities. Maceo Spice and Import Company at 2607 Market St. has a large colorful mural on the side of the building that was created by Daniel Anguilu with local students from the Bernardo de Galvez Academy. Greetings From Galveston in Saengerfest Park, 23rd and The Strand, is a colorful mural that was completed by longtime Galveston artist Gabriel Prusmack, and commissioned by the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau. A mural boasting sea life in a mainly blue background is located at Strand and 24th St. The art piece includes marine life such as jellyfish, a seahorse, a shark, and a dolphin. To tie the whole piece together, artist Gabriel Prusmack inscribed “i (heart) galveston” in red, right in the middle.

Maceo Spice & Import: The Spicy Side of Legacy By Terry Card

When Concetta Maceo talks about her family business, Maceo Spice & Import, her enthusiasm, and dedication are self-evident. She has a burning desire to continue her family legacy. The Maceo family is tied to Galveston Island by her great uncles Sam and Rose, founders of the Turf Club and the famous Balinese Room. They were the older brothers of her great grandfather Frank Thomas Maceo. Prior to her great uncles’ move to Galveston, her great uncle Rosario, at eight years of age, would help his uncle Tony make and sell Muffalettas in the French Quarter of New Orleans, running in front of his uncle’s wooden wagon shouting “Muffalettas! Muffalettas! Get your fresh Muffalettas! And of course, today – Maceo Spice & Import is famous for its Muffalettas, made of the finest Italian salami, ham, and provolone cheese in freshly baked round Italian bread with a specially blended secret family olive dressing, the recipe of which is generations old. Frank and Katherine Maceo’s son, Rosario Samuel Maceo, Concetta’s grandfather, was born on July 14, 1917 in New Orleans. After moving to Galveston, he started the Maceo Spice & Import Company in 1944. In those days, it was strictly a commercial enterprise, originally designed for chefs to browse products while placing their orders. It was grandfather Rosario who purchased the building they are now in as a warehouse. Initially, it was only a warehouse, but slowly it evolved so that a small part was dedicated to retail under Rosario and his son Ronnie’s guidance. Subsequently, the retail and commercial shop they had moved to at 25th St. (Rosenberg) and Market St., was destroyed during Hurricane Ike, so they relocated back to the old warehouse at Market St. and 27th St. Concetta was born in Austin, Texas and at six years of age moved to The Woodlands with her mother after her mother and father got divorced.

But they always functioned together as a family and her father Ronnie’s greatest desire was to see her become a nurse. She attended St. Edwards College in Austin and was just one semester away from graduating when she decided nursing was not for her. She wanted to be in the family business and found that during class she was miles away doing business plans in her head. Starting around Christmas in 2011, under the guise of needing money for college, she worked for her father, cashiering and generally helping in the office. At first, her father was bitterly disappointed when she told him she was not going to finish college. She moved to Houston in 2012, working as a representative for National Liquor while learning the retail trade. Then in 2014, Ronnie had a liver transplant, so Concetta lived with her brother while she helped her father run the company. Although by her own admission, she and her father fight like cats and dogs, they complement each other in business - Ronnie in the CEO role making the overall decisions, and Concetta in a Operations Manager’s role looking after the day to day business. The result of this collaboration has been a reorganization to emphasize more retail while still growing the commercial. They brought in new business after Concetta applied for and got a beer and wine license. This has allowed them to expand both the retail and commercial sides of the business. In addition, the shop has been reorganized. It started two years ago with product placement aligned to accommodate the expanding retail and last year was dedicated to changing the ordering system and adding coolers to accommodate new product. It has now become a regular start of the year process to revamp store arrangements and office procedures. The latest addition to the business is evident immediately to passers-by and customers. At the end of May 2017, they created an outside gathering area for holding special events including concerts and parties that Ronnie

traditionally held for his friends and customers. In the summer from June to September, parties are held every other Thursday evening 6-9pm. To this end, a concrete slab was constructed on the property they owned next to their building, for general use, and as a dance floor. A stage was constructed for musical groups. Trees and grass were planted and tables were built for their friends and patrons. Smoking is allowed only outside. Friday evenings from 6-9pm, they have dinner specials featuring a different menu each time. Some of the specialty meals include steak, quail, or shrimp. The company imports the finest spices, meat, and cheese from all over the world. When trying new products, they always contact the suppliers no matter where they are, for samples for tasting and testing. The original network for the worldwide importing process was set up by Concetta’s grandfather. In addition to purchasing bulk quantities, Maceo Spice & Import go out of their way to fulfill individual customer requests. The majority of their clientele are local individuals and companies in Galveston and Harris counties. Previously, virtually all business was commercial, but they have added retail to the mix, including sales to the Italian American grocery in Houston and Galveston, Seven Seas Grocery, and H&R Meat & Grocery. They also supply

In addition, they donate in times of need like the aftermath of hurricane Harvey, after the Santa Fe High School shooting, as well as ongoing donations to organizations like the Beach Patrol. Concetta is the new generation of the Maceo family and her enthusiasm for the family business is as bright as ever. She has been surprised on more than one occasion at how being in the business has impacted her personally. One time she was interviewed by a local newspaper. The article was picked up nationally and soon, she was being called by relatives in Vermont congratulating her. It was the busiest time for the store ever. They ran out of everything! But, by far the biggest and most exciting impact for Concetta, is that she met her husband at the shop. Barry Gray Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for E. Barry Gray and his new history of Texas’ golden age of Victorian courthouses, illustrated with vintage postcards. The Victorian Courthouses of Texas have been considered the architectural treasures of the state. Although the buildings share many characteristics - such as the use of wrought iron, stained-glass, towers, turrets, and gingerbread - the Victorian Era represents not one, but many different styles. This was the golden age of courthouse design when almost every county in Texas built at least one of the imposing and ornate structures, and because of our own thoughts, and the importance of getting in touch with our five senses. Your angels want you to understand about their unconditional love and are eager for you to talk with them. They want you to be happy and healthy, and they will show you exactly how to do so. Cathy Catching also does angel readings and teaches others how angelic communication can

fires, sometimes two or three. Texas was fortunate during this period (18371900+) to have some of the greatest Victorian architects in the country: Houston’s Eugene T. Heiner, San Antonio’s Alfred Giles and James Riely Gordon, Galveston’s Nicholas Clayton, Austin’s Jacob Larmour and Frederic Ruffini, Waco’s Wesley Clark Dodson, and Dallas’ James Edward Flanders. The Victorian styles fit perfectly with the idea of what a temple of justice should say about a county’s people and their values, illustrating in stone, and glass the importance of government and law in society. While most of these great buildings are now gone, the beauty of their designs has been preserved in the hand-tinted postcards that were so popular in those days. E. Barry Gray’s “Victorian Texas Courthouses and County Histories in Postcards” seeks to preserve the memory of this architectural tradition through the gathering of over one hundred vintage picture postcards. His previous book, “Greetings from Galveston,” explores island history also using postcards for illustrations. E. Barry Gray is a 5th generation Texan whose family was among the earliest settlers of East Texas. His great-great grandfather was Josephus S. Ervine, the youngest man to have fought in the Battle of San Jacinto. This family heritage accounts for his lifelong love of Texas history. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and taught chemistry and physics in Texas public schools for 34 years.

Beach, Beach Baby

It’s Time for Sand Between Your Toes

Finding the perfect spot on the beach is sometimes a challenging thing. You have to look for space, waves, umbrellas, a place for your kids to play, a view...and then there is the water too! The 32-mile long stretch of beaches that make up Galveston Island, whether private or public, offer a range of beachfront experiences. The Galveston Seawall and beaches lining the Gulf of Mexico is the world’s longest continuous sidewalk and attracts walkers, joggers, bicyclists, surfers, sunbathers, skaters and sightseers year-round. It’s a great place to exercise or just sit to watch a flock of brown pelicans skim across the waves at sunset. Here is the guide to the different beach experiences on the island. We are positive one will be perfect for you and your family. East Beach East Beach is Galveston’s bonus beach, and is easily considered not only the most beautiful but the hippest of Galveston’s beaches. East Beach is located at the far east end of the Island. During the summer months, East Beach comes alive with concerts, festivals, events, an annual sandcastle competition, and parties that last from dusk until dawn. Unlike most beaches on Galveston, alcohol is allowed on East Beach, although glass containers are prohibited. East Beach is located at 1923 Boddeker Drive. For more info call (409)797-5111. It is open weekdays 9am-6pm and weekends 8am-7pm. Memorial Day to Labor Day admission is Monday-Friday $12, Saturday-Sunday $15. There is a $2 Early Bird Discount before 12 noon excluding special events and holidays. Cost is $15 for special events and holidays. You can even rent a horse and go for a stroll around the East Beach area! Stewart Beach Named one of the “10 Best Beaches for Families” by Family Vacation Critic in 2013, Stewart Beach is Galveston’s premier family beach park. Located where historic Broadway Avenue meets the Seawall, Stewart Beach offers plenty of amenities for a day at the beach as well as regular supervision of highly trained lifeguards. The park is home to a pavilion, concessions, restrooms, showers, chair and umbrella rentals, beach volleyball courts, children's playground, giant water slide, and more. Alcohol is not permitted at Stewart Beach. Stewart Beach is located at 201 Seawall Blvd. For more info call (409)797-5182. The Seawall Urban Parks & Beaches The center of Galveston’s beach activity takes place along the island’s famous Seawall Boulevard. This urban park stretches more than 10 miles offering plenty of beach as well as the nation’s longest continuous sidewalk – great for running, biking or people watching. Beaches along the seawall offer easy access to the island’s many beachfront restaurants, resorts, and tourist attractions such as the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park that stands on a pier over the Gulf of Mexico at Seawall and 25th Street. Parking along the Seawall from 6th to 69th streets and 81st to 103rd streets can be purchased via Pay By Phone for $1 per hour, $8 per day or $25 per annual pass. 10am-6pm daily. Register your vehicle by visiting paybyphone.com or (866)234-7275. Glass and alcohol is not permitted on any Seawall Beach. West End Pocket Parks The island’s West End offers a quiet oasis miles past the Seawall. The area is home to two “pocket parks” that are great for some swimming, sunbathing, picnics, and bird watching. Pocket Park 1 is located at 11102 San Luis Pass Road on Galveston’s West End. The park is minutes from 61st Street and island attractions Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn Waterpark and includes a children’s playground. Beachfront parking is available. Pocket Park 2 is located at 11745 San Luis Pass Road on Galveston’s West End. The park includes an educational wetlands preserve, beach access points, and public parking. Amenities include outdoor rinse-off showers as well as umbrella and chair rentals. Both Pocket Parks are open Memorial Day to Labor Day weekdays 9am-5pm and weekends 8am-6pm. Admission is Monday-Friday $12 and Saturday-Sunday $15. Sunny Beach A local’s favorite beach, Sunny Beach is located on the west end off San Luis Pass Road at the end of 8 Mile Road. The most exciting feature of Sunny Beach is that you can drive on the beach and park, and place your tent beside your car. You can surf, fish, swim, fly kites and more here. No glass bottles are allowed. There are no lifeguards or chair and umbrella rentals but this is a great place to search for seashells and get away from the business of the island. This beach gets quite crowded on weekends. There is no charge to access this beach area. Be careful, the sand is very loose in some areas and it is easy to get stuck. Also to note, most days the ice cream truck comes around late afternoon! Seawolf Park Seawolf Park is located on Galveston’s Pelican Island on a former immigration station site. The park offers one of the island’s most popular fishing piers, picnic sites, and a playground. The park is also home to tourist attractions, including the WWII submarine the USS Cavalla and one of only three destroyer escorts in the world, the USS Stewart. The remains of the WWI tanker S.S. Selma, the largest concrete ship constructed, can be seen northwest of the park's fishing pier. To get to Seawolf Park, take I-45 South into Galveston. Turn left onto 51st Street and continue over the bridge to Pelican Island. This road will end at Seawolf Park. Admission is $6 per vehicle. They are open 24 hours a day seven days a week year round.

Galveston Island State Park The Galveston Island State Park was named one of the top 5 “Best Gulf Coast Beaches” by Travel Channel in 2013. The park offers a quiet oasis on the island’s West End where visitors can explore the Gulf of Mexico or Galveston Bay. Families can enjoy kayak tours, beach and surf explorations, bird walks, nature field trips and fishing clinics at no cost. Visit fogisp.org for information or see the Outdoors section in this publication. The park also offers beach camping, kayaking, and geo-cache events. For information, visit tpwd.state.tx.us. Galveston Island State Park is located at 14901 FM 3005. For more info call (409)737-1222. Entrance fee is $5 per person, per day. San Luis Pass The beach referred to as San Luis Pass is actually named for the stretch of water that both separates Galveston’s western tip from the mainland and connects Galveston Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The beach at San Luis Pass is located off the beaten path, and offers no amenities except the peace of isolation and solitude. Surfing and fishing are permitted year round, and along the Pass are several launch sites into the Gulf. Swimming is allowed only on the Gulf side, and although no permanent lifeguards are stationed, security and lifeguards do patrol the area during the summer. Alcohol is prohibited, but vehicle access to the beach is entirely free and reaches all the way to the water’s edge. The Galveston side of San Luis Pass is a public beach located at the far western tip of the Island. The entrance is marked by signs and can be found just before the entrance onto the Galveston Tollbridge. Music Free Galveston Beach Band Every Tuesday Every Tuesday though August 14th,

7:30-9:30pm, the Galveston Beach Band will perform a free family-friendly concert opposite Rosenberg Library, 2310 Sealy St., Downtown Galveston. Also, there will be a concert on Sunday, July 3rd to celebrate the holiday! Starting in the 1920’s, the Galveston Beach Band’s free concerts were an important summer Island attraction, often boasting audiences of 2,000 and featured on the newspaper front page. By the 1960’s, the Band had declined and was revitalized, thanks to its core of loyal musicians and then new leader, Frank Incaprera. Fast forward to today and the free concerts continue as much loved as ever. Now a proudly family evening, concerts are a diverse mix of much loved show tunes, big band numbers, and jazz influences. Housed in Sealy Pavilion, concerts are a mixture of family, fun, and summer relaxation. The band’s playlist includes music from Broadway shows, movies, and dance bands. Besides mixing the types of music performed, the band also features a singer and draws from its 18-members that form the dance band. This band is a favorite for all ages!

Frank Incaprera, age 94, is the driving force behind the Galveston Beach Band. From annual quests for funding, to music selection, conducting, and playing solos, Frank is always front and center stage. He is a man of monumental commitment and under his nearly 50-year leadership, the summer concerts continue to bring pleasure to so many. Presenting family entertainment ranks highly with Incaprera who adds, “I want the children to be at the concerts.” At most concerts, 20-50 children are handed maracas and climb the stage. “It's fun playing music this way,” said Incaprera. “It's one of the highlights of my summers still to this day.” The typical concert can include the HokeyPokey for kids as well as a parade of flag-carrying children who come up on stage while the national anthem is played. Visit galvestonbeachband.org or call (409)7973700 for more info.
