Things To Do Seasons Gourmet Food & Grocer:
“ReFRESHing!”
Written by Sharis Roe DeJaynes, photos by Sharis Roe DeJaynes and Kristen Tigrett New to Galveston at the corner of 27th St. and Broadway, is Seasons Gourmet Food & Grocer. Sole owner Johnathan McCutcheon and Floor Manager Kristen Tigrett were generous hosts as I sat with them and talked for hours about all things Seasons. “When you come here, we want you to feel like it’s your second home,” says John. That it did, and I was there until closing. Proof positive! John purchased the property, and after a lengthy process with the City, he finally opened nearly 10 months ago. Seasons opened as an organic grocery store, restaurant, and bar. “Galvestonians didn’t immediately take to the organic produce and meats part, so we chose to pull back and focus on the restaurant and bar side of things, for now,” says John. But keeping to their mission, they stay organic and use locally-sourced produce in the foods they prepare. The hope is that once they are further established, the produce, meats, and fish will come back. They still carry groceries, just currently limited to dry goods. They have a nice selection of loose leaf teas, coffees, seasonings, and more of their very own name brand products. John expresses, “We are open to referrals to stock what customers want and will do everything in our power to get it on the shelf for them.” Not only do they have a beautiful dining room and bar area inside, Seasons boasts a beautiful, large covered patio with two 137” projector screens and other TVs. Local musicians provide live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. Seasons has the largest craft beer selection on the island, with 250+ beers and 16 crafts on tap including Galveston brews. They have a wonderful selection of more than 100 prestigious and local wines as well. They’re not short on choices! Getting to the food, Seasons has a full-service deli where they cut meat and cheese by the pound and serve freshly made sandwiches. In addition to menu items such as salads, sandwiches, burgers, and wings, their entrée selection features delectable beef stroganoff, whole crab creole gumbo, grass fed prime sirloin, and specialty chicken dishes. “We have a loyal following, and there is something for everyone on the menu,” says John. Seasons also delivers. Their entire menu, including deli meats and cheeses, and even beer can be delivered directly to your home or establishment. Call ahead for take-out at any time as well. The food is fresh, from scratch, and made to order. Hand cut fries, hand-battered wings, and everything else that touches the plate, is made-toorder. Nothing is pre-prepared. They make everything in-house including sauces like Alfredo, garlic butter, and lemon garlic. Current weekly specials are: • Happy Hour food and drink specials, MondayFriday, 4-7pm • Saturdays starting at 2pm: all-you-can-eat crawfish for $30 • Sundays, all day: all-you-can-eat wings for $12.99 • Wednesdays, Date Night: two entrees and a bottle of wine for $39.99 Seasons offers 10% discount to UTMB and Texas A&M students as well as 50% discount to all active uniformed police. In addition to the well thought out menu and upscale, yet relaxed, interior, Seasons boasts a kids’ corner featuring free x-box play. “I try to put myself in the shoes of every guest who walks in the door including the kids. We provide a safe environment within close proximity of dining parents, where children can relax and play age appropriate games for free, no quarters necessary,” says John, a kid at heart. John wishes to thank Lone Star Comics for donating to the children’s literacy rack as

well. Kids will feel right at home at Seasons. John was born in Houston, Texas. Homeschooled and an Eagle Scout, he quickly grew into an entrepreneur. His father owns a computer business, with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science from LSU. His mother dedicated herself to keeping the home happy and healthy. “My parents were very supportive, and at the age of 15, I bought a firework stand and my first season’s inventory. We worked summers and winters in the fireworks business, hence “Seasons,” the name. I bought a few more stands then sold them at 17 years old. After that, I got an associate’s degree at Lone Star Community College and was awarded a scholarship to Tulane,” John prides. At Tulane, John studied international relations, history, and law. His only brother, Sam, was diagnosed with Leukemia, so he moved back to Galveston. Sam is in remission now and is currently in film school. “He’s the artist; I’m the businessman.” As such, John has an appreciation for art and commissioned local artists Adam Garrison to do the mural on the patio, and Catherine Stroud to do the mural in the dining room. In addition to Seasons, John holds an insurance license and sells property, casualty, life, health, and annuity insurance. He also holds a real estate license and is a general contractor while trading stocks and bonds on the side. John is currently 27 years of age. Impressive! John is a very hands-on owner and dedicated to customer service. “We truly listen. Without guests, there is no us. Without guests coming through our doors telling us what they’re looking for and what they want, we don’t know, we can only guess,” said John. “We want our guests to have the best experience and get what they were looking for. Right now what my guests want is the bar and restaurant, so I’m here to give it to them.” Given he is a licensed general contractor, he built in and built out nearly everything in the store. He’s happy to be “Broadway Strong” and is doing his best to represent what Galveston is about. He has the tenacity and business sense to adapt, grow, and even reinvent. He’s here to stay. As for Seasons’ future plans, an upper deck is in the works for more space to enjoy the outdoors. A full bar and online ordering is in the works as well. Seasons fully intends to bring back the organic produce and meat selection at some point. We suspect it won’t be long with their ever-growing customer support. Your whole family will be refreshed by the upscale yet relaxed atmosphere, the affable staff, the service, and of course, the fresh new food and drinks at Seasons. “When you come here, you are family,” says John. Seasons is located at 2701 Broadway, on the corner of 27th St. and Broadway. Hours are 11am– 12 midnight, seven days a week. The kitchen is open until 9pm Sunday-Thursday, and 10pm Fridays and Saturdays. Stay up-to-date by following Seasons on Facebook at facebook.com/seasonsgalveston1. For delivery, take out, or special requests, call Seasons at (409)443-5800.

Resource & Crisis Center: Ending Domestic Violence By Terry Card
It is an unfortunate part of our society. We read about it or hear about it on TV. The beating and death of a mother and her children by a father in a drunken rage. However, many forms of domestic violence are so much a part of everyday life for some families that it goes unreported. Why is that? Fear is a major factor. Often the mother fears for her life and the lives of her children if she goes to the police; fear of people knowing about the family’s dirty laundry or fear of authorities in a society that is foreign are other factors. Until recently the abused had nowhere to turn. There was no one they could trust to call and no safe place to go. However, there are always those who are not afraid to stand above the crowd. Those who are willing to offer their hand to others when there is no personal benefit in doing so. On Saturday, July 29th at the San Luis Hotel Ballroom in Galveston, 5222 Seawall Blvd, The Resource & Crisis Center will proudly honor such a person. The Resource & Crisis Center is the place where the victims of domestic and sexual violence are protected and comforted. Coming from an iconic family synonymous with resurrecting Galveston after the Great Storm of 1900 and continuous philanthropic work since that time, it is no surprise that the woman who stood up with Susan Baker, along with four other brave women who took on a task that was not even supposed to be talked about at the time, was and is a Grand Dame of Galveston. Peaches Kempner took on that Herculean project in 1979 working with the Galveston County YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) and her core group within the YWCA to reach out to women subject to domestic violence and who had no place to turn. Over time this informal aspect of the YWCA became so important that in 1984 it was formalized as The Women’s Resource & Crisis Center and incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Twenty years later the Women’s portion of the title was dropped to reflect the little known cases of domestic violence toward males. What most people do not realize is that there are many different forms of domestic violence besides physical and sexual violence that can be just as debilitating for the victims. For families, including juveniles, controlling behavior and dominance, usually by the husband and father, strike fear into their hearts and suffocates them not only in their life within the family environment, but also in their relations with people outside their family. They are subjected to verbal, emotional, and financial abuse that does not allow them to be “normal.” They cannot bring outsiders into their home in case they witness the erratic and often violent behavior that is the overriding feature of their lives. That is why the work done by Peaches Kempner, and now continued by the Resource & Crisis Center (RCC), is so important. It provides a shoulder to lean on and a place for these victims to turn. For those who need help, the RCC provides case management support for their new “clients,” connecting them with Community
Support resources. In-house, RCC provides psychological therapy, legal resources, a safe shelter environment, and education about violence and abuse in all their forms and how to deal with them. In addition, they also foster access to out-of-house programs providing assistance with psychological and mental health issues, family health, substance abuse therapy, and financial education and support. When a new family arrives at their doorstep, they first assess the situation, then decide the best course of action on a case by case basis. Services can be anything from financial and job placements to health care, education, and helping find shelter and food. All of this work and the programs supported require significant financial expenditure. Fortunately for RCC, they have wonderful partners giving them money to fund the necessities of their charity work. Partners include the Kempner Foundation, The Moody Foundation, Moody Permanent Endowment (Moody Methodist Church), Broomberg Foundation, Ippolito Foundation, and Houston Endowment. In addition, the Galveston Resale store just recently moved to a larger space at 2025 Broadway. The League City store is at 150 N. Gulf Fwy., and the La Marque store is at 12007 Delaney Rd. The Resale stores provide 27% of the revenue needed to provide the services, private donations are about 30%, and public support through the Federal Department of HHS and through the Texas Attorney General’s Office is 43%. RCC is embarking on a fund drive to raise more than $4 million to help pay for the mortgage secured to purchase the site at 1204 45th and build a new 3,300 square foot facility. For the past 20 years, RCC has used donated or rented space. The programs and assistance they provide has grown exponentially, but the space has not. With the new facility they will be able to double the number of people sheltered each month in a family friendly environment rather than a dormitory subsistence. The driving force behind the existing facility and the fund raising for the new building is Executive Director Selah Tacconi, who was born in Indiana but moved to Texas at age 13. After graduation from the University of Houston, she moved to Galveston and began working at RCC. She then left to get her M.E.d. while working at GISD. Subsequently, she returned to RCC because of her passion to provide for those less fortunate. Never losing sight of the importance of fundraising, she strives to develop relations with donors. All donations matter, whether it is small donations such as diapers and supplies or large donations, RCC is grateful for all donations and is especially appreciative of its event, medical, legal, hot-line, and store volunteers. RCC welcomes anyone who is willing to help. In conjunction with honoring Peaches Kempner, the July 29th gala is a fundraiser called Casino For A Cause. Individual tickets are $150. Table prices range from $350-$5,000. This is a worthy cause deserving of the community’s support. Domestic violence can touch any family! For more info go to rccgc.org.

mid awaits an awe-inspiring underwater experience that includes a new Humboldt Penguin Habitat, a Mangrove Lagoon touch tank that is home to stingrays and sharks, and a multi-level 30,000 gallon Oil Rig Tank. Moody Gardens newly renovated Aquarium Pyramid is now open to the public, giving guests their first glimpse into the completed multi-phased $37 million renovation project. Guests will journey to new depths this summer, exploring the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, South Pacific, North Pacific, and the Caribbean. Each ocean exhibit highlights different marine sanctuaries and relationship aspects to the seas with conservation messages that underscore the vital importance of the oceans. The new Humboldt penguins are eager to meet the public. These unique warm-climate penguins hail from Southern Hemisphere waters from the Antarctic Pole to the Equator. This is the second penguin exhibit at Moody Gardens, and the Humboldts are right next door to the South Atlantic Penguin Habitat, home to the King, Gentoo, Chinstrap, Rockhopper, and Macaroni penguins. The new Gulf of Mexico Rig exhibit is a balance of technology and nature in an impressive 30,000 gallon, two-story, 23-foot scale model oil production platform aquarium. These man-made islands provide valuable attachment surfaces for a variety of encrusting organisms to create an entire reef ecosystem found throughout the Gulf of Mexico. This new exhibit includes diver communication for presentations and interaction, further engaging guests in their underwater experience. “Journeys to the Caribbean” begin with the new Mangrove Lagoon. Touch Cownose Stingrays and Bonnethead Sharks as they swim lazily around the jungle of stilt roots that most of the region’s fish call home. A second touch tank features small fish, Sea Stars, Hermit Crabs, Pencil Urchins, and other invertebrates allowing guests to cross the water/air border.
With help from the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, guests experience the East Flower Garden Bank, West Flower Garden Bank, and Stetson Bank up close and personal. The exhibit includes examples of Brain, Star and Elkhorn coral, to name a few, all of which can be seen on the banks. The Flower Garden Banks reef system is one of the healthiest in the Gulf and Caribbean regions. Guests are completely immersed in the Caribbean Exhibit with breathtaking views as sharks, rays, and other tropical fish swim overhead while they walk through the tunnel in this one million-gallon exhibit, giving them the sense of diving in the Caribbean. New to the exhibit is “The Pride,” a 19th century rum-runner shipwreck replica, loosely based on the vessel sailed by famed Galveston pirate Jean Lafitte. Divers spent a total of 68.5 hours underwater putting together the ship, which arrived in about 75 individual pieces. Also new are in-water presentations by Moody Gardens divers. With additions to the exhibit, guests are bound to have questions. Divers are now able to take and answers questions while in the exhibit. The “North Pacific Gallery” focuses on the high-energy coastline to the west. Seals and sea lions are featured prominently alongside other kelp forest inhabitants including Leopard Sharks, and the long-lived Rockfish. And, that’s not all! Don’t miss out on the whimsical and colorful array of soft-bodied predators inside the new Jellyfish Gallery. Lights, sounds, and textures further enhance the display of these free swimming coral relatives. There’s also the South Pacific Biome that showcases the tremendous diversity that is found in the epicenter of the coral reef evolution. Colorful corals, invertebrates, fishes, and sharks fill the niche habitats highlighted in the large and small aquarium features. Moody Gardens hosts a variety of activities throughout the year for the whole family to enjoy. Moody Gardens is located at 1 Hope Blvd. For more info call (800)582-4637 or go to moodygardens.com.
