Moody Gardens Golf Club:
Experience One of the Top Golf Courses in the Country By Terry Card As both golfers and non-golfers realize, in spite of all golf courses consisting of fairways, greens, rough, and sand bunkers, there are marked differences from course to course, influenced by location and topography. Moody Gardens Golf course is no exception. Its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and its southern latitude create special benefits such as being able to play year round while many of our northern neighbors are inundated in the icy white stuff. But the all too real threat of hurricanes, lashing wind, high saline content soil, and intense heat present challenges unique to the coastal beach environment. Galveston, being a city of many firsts, boasted the first golf course in Texas. Built in 1898, the Galveston Country Club was destroyed in the 1900 storm, considered the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, killing anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 people and destroying much of the island. Galveston was without a municipal golf course until the 1930’s when Donald Ross (one of the mostly highly renowned golf architects in history) designed a course that was constructed where the airport is presently located. But when WWII arrived, the golf course was razed to make way for a new Air Force Base. In 1948, a new municipal golf course, the Galveston Country Club was constructed adjacent to 61st Street, but that gave way to a shopping center, and it was not until 1976 that a flat uninteresting and mediocre at best golf layout was constructed where the present Moody Gardens Golf course is located. Finally a group of disgruntled citizens got together in 1989 and borrowed $1.3 million to do a complete redesign. Carlton Gipson, a renowned golf course architect, completed the 6,900 yard layout and the redesigned golf course opened under the leadership of head Golf pro Joe
Russo. Today, golfers who play Moody Gardens Golf course benefit from a 2008 $16 million redesign by the Golf Course Architectural firm of Jacobsen Hardy. Peter Jacobsen, was one of the most colorful characters on the PGA Tour where he won seven tournaments and played on two Ryder Cup teams. The cost of the reconstruction was underwritten by Moody Gardens who then donated the new municipal course to the City. This unique seaside semi-tropical venue with 18 holes meandering through upland and lowland native areas, natural wetlands, and adjacent to beautiful Sydnor Bayou, has more than 500 palm trees on the 6,900 yard layout. In addition, there is an extensive practice area surrounded by tropical plantings, consisting of a driving range, putting green, and separate chipping green with practice sand bunker. This is a great facility for improving your game! One of the most important features of the newly recreated golf course was the installation of Paspalum grass. This turf is designed for seaside golf courses and according to Bill Pushak, the General Manager and Director of Golf Operations, Moody Gardens Golf course was one of the first courses in the U.S. to use it. It flourishes in soil with high saline content and does not get killed when inundated during high tide levels in Galveston Bay and Sydnor Bayou, like regular grass would. It loves the heat, and even in unusual times when we have a hard freeze, it discolors a bit, but then bounces back once the freeze is over. The entire course is Paspalum grass, but there is a different variety on the greens. It is 15% more expensive than regular turf, but through a cooperative effort with

Galveston Golf and Country Club, they utilize a cost sharing technique to help defray costs. And the course came through Hurricane Ike in fine fashion with the Paspalum turf saving the day. Another interesting concept incorporated into the redesign was the creation of an irrigation system that depends on effluent from the city being treated at a nearby plant and distributed throughout the golf course to water the greens and fairways. The main distribution line runs behind the airport and supplies approximately 800 million gallons per day to a 2 million gallon irrigation pond. From there, the water is pumped into the distribution and watering system. Since the 2008 reconstruction, the player usage has grown exponentially. Golf Advisor rates it one of the top 50 courses in the U.S., coming in at Number 46. A number of top golf tournaments are held each year at Moody Gardens including the prestigious Texas Father/Son Championship. Other annual events for both locals and tourists include the Galveston Restaurant Tournament sponsored by Rudy and Paco’s, the Boy Scout Tournament, Salvation Army Tourney, Kidsmas in December, Galveston Chamber of Commerce Tournament, and From the Heart (Shriners Hospital). One event exclusively tourist oriented is the McCoy Lumber Tournament, which brings in staff from all over the state. Each of these tournaments will

have from 100 to 150 golfers enjoying the day. In addition, there are many informal tournaments set up by companies for their staff and clients, many of which are repeat tournaments. For variety, Moody Gardens has an informal arrangement with Galveston Golf and Country Club to hold alternative year tournaments at each of the clubs for corporate clients. Generally speaking, usage is about 60% tourist and 40% local. However, no matter whether it’s golfers attending a major tourney, local tournaments, or individuals, the remodeled clubhouse, pro shop, banquet room, and the new Pelican Grille overlooking the vistas of the golf course provide an excellent place to relax and find something to eat. The Pelican Grille has a full bar and serves drinks with meals. Breakfast includes a full egg breakfast, tacos, or sandwiches. The lunch menu includes salads, various wraps, sandwiches, burgers, and tacos. Nautical Décor, Island Style Galore By Rob Lucey Whether you are fortunate enough to own an island home or just want to take a bit of the coast home with you to remember your visit, a great way to do so is to incorporate nautical décor into your interior design. The nautical look can take many forms, from a serious traditional collection of historic artifacts to kitschy seaside inspired arts and crafts and pirates and mythical mermaids to tall ships and the beauty of sea life and shorebirds, lighthouses, and yacht races. Some decorating ideas include papering a wall in old marine charts, hanging a fishing net from the ceiling, or dropping in some select shells. You might even pick up some driftwood from the beach and build a frame for your old fishing lures, mount a surfboard above your sofa, add some choice art pieces, or lean an antique outboard in the corner. All can be mixed and matched to express your personal salty style. Ample examples of each coastal sub-genre can be found around the island, from resort hotel lobbies and restaurants to museums and historic homes. When you see something you like, you can probably locate it for sale on the island. Smitten with the look of old sailing vessels? Take a stroll aboard Galveston’s own authentic tall ship, the 1877 barque Elissa at the Texas Seaport Museum, 2100 Harborside Dr., and take note of all the decorative possibilities. Then start shopping in the museum gift shop where you can acquire deck prisms, volumes for the shelves in your nautical library, artwork depicting Elissa and other nautical scenes, occasional crafts created by the volunteer crew, and much more. If you seek authentic ship’s wheels, pennants, binnacles (compass stands), hatches, ladders, lanterns, life rings, charts, bells, figureheads, or other pieces pulled from actual ships, Nautical Antiques & Tropical Decor located at 2202 Ship Mechanic Row, is the place to go. Proprietors Michael and Adrienne Culpepper travel to ship breaking yards in Europe, Asia, and beyond. They purchase select pieces to have cleaned up and shipped back to their store by the container load, so there is always plenty to pick through to find the perfect treasure. Other home decorating shops on the island also lean heavily toward the coastal themes. You can’t miss with the ever-changing furnishings and accessories available at Bayside Chic, 4002 Broadway. Some pieces are built with reclaimed lumber giving them a weathered look that lends itself to windswept beach houses. They also have a range of bedding featuring ships, shells, anchors, and sea creatures. Coastal Creations, 3802 Cove View Blvd., has a similar selection of tropical pieces, including plenty of wicker and rattan, coastal throw pillows, carvings and paintings of pelicans, and
shelves loaded with blue crab and mermaid depictions. Gift shops on the island naturally stock island-themed pieces that can be incorporated into your interior design. The Admiralty, 221 Strand St., has many model ships and marine life pieces. You can’t beat the selection of shells and other coastal pieces at the island’s oldest gift shop, Murdochs, located at 2215 Seawall Blvd. For a bathroom or girl’s room, a mermaid theme can hit the spot. The Naked Mermaid, 2113 Postoffice St., has many pieces reflecting its name as well as other coastal furnishings. Flea by the Sea, 2501 Market St., also has an eclectic collection of vintage and art items including art depicting mermaids. Many of the shops on the Strand carry items that could be incorporated into a pirate-themed bedroom for younger buccaneers inspired by a visit to the Pirates – Legends of the Gulf Coast exhibit in Saengerfest Park. Haunt some of the island’s more than two dozen antique shops, and you might scare up a chest to fill with Mardi Gras beads for booty. Bolt a ship’s helm wheel to the footboard of the bed and drape a skull and crossbones flag from the ceiling. Arrr! Salty! Wander past one of the island’s marinas or the yacht basin, and you might be inspired to include some yacht club or sport fishing styling in your décor. You can re-purpose much of the gear available in the West Marine, 5926 Broadway or the fishing and boating section of Academy Sports & Outdoors, 4523 Fort Crockett Blvd. No matter which coastal theme you prefer, you can cap off the look with select pieces of original art from the island’s numerous art galleries. Most of the local galleries showcase local artists, and those artists are frequently inspired by the beauty of their coastal surroundings. Heard Gallery, 2217 Postoffice St., features “beach art for beach homes.” René Wiley Gallery, 2128 Postoffice St., is packed with art depicting island scenes and “Hurricane Ike wood” carvings of sea life. Galveston Art League, 2117 Postoffice St., always has a variety of local artists exhibiting coastal talents, and Vacation on Canvas, 2113 Postoffice St., depicts life on the island through original paintings. So put on your shopping shoes and get decorative. Bring the beauty of the island indoors.

“The Counterfeit Prince of Old Texas: Swindling Slaver Monroe Edwards” by Lora-Marie Bernard
The Arts Come and Set a Spell, I’ve a Story to Tell By George Douglas Lee Several months ago, I was commissioned to create one of the mosaics for the Seawall Interpretive Trail (Project SIT) benches. For any of you who are long-time Galvestonians you may remember the hard concrete benches that have been on the Seawall, from the east end to west, since the 1930’s, many in some stage of disrepair or neglect. Karla Klay, Executive Director of the Artist Boat, took the initiative to seek authorization from the City of Galveston to turn those handy yet frankly ugly eyesores around. The City said “yes.” Karla, the Artist Boat team, and locallybased art experts put together a call for artists to submit pre-selected thematic designs for each of the 70 benches. I was one of the artists who answered the call. My submission, “Galveston Seawall – Protection and Promenade” was selected by the review committee. Fortunately, I didn’t know what I was getting into. The “paint” was more like powder, made from clay. It dried too fast. And when it did dry, it didn’t look like anything on the sample sheet. It was very pale as it dried lighter and much of it soaked into the tiles. More coats of paint were required. A tiny needle nose applicator was provided for lettering. It simply didn’t fit my hands, nor with my neuropathy inflicted hands, could I manage it. Plus, it kept clogging with the thick, powdery paint. Somehow, the bench turned out to be “not quite” proportional to the size of my original design. Since it was a tile mosaic, each tile had to fit precisely and the design had to be maintained regardless of the actual bench size. Learning curves aplenty. At one point, I broke a tile and tried to glue it back together, but Artist Boat project manager, Amanda Rinehart caught me. A new tile was painted. With trepidation on my part, the tiles went into the kiln and out they came with this amazing vivid color! The bench is located at 19th St. and Seawall. Not all of the themes had as yet been selected by artists. A second call to artists soon followed. My “Fort Crockett – Germans Among Us” design was selected by the review committee. After the learning experience of the first bench, I thought the second would be a piece of cake. It might have been had it not been for rotator cuff surgery midway thru the project. With no idea of how painful or debilitating such a surgery is, I “shouldered on” – not! In those moments when “not” knocked out by pain medication, I studied the history of Fort Crockett and the German POW’s detained here. It is a fascinating history. Learn all about it; the bench is located at 53rd and Seawall. With my left arm now attached to my side, I thought I was finished with benches. No one had selected “It is Good to Have Goods” about Galveston Bay’s shipping industry. Amanda Rinehart called, saying she thought I’d do a good job with the theme. This took another deep dive into the history of the Galveston and Houston ports’ rivalries and progress. Eventually the permanent sling for my shoulder became less so. I found better
Ruth Downes Lays Down the Law for Painting By Rob Lucey There are jokes about throwing lawyers in the ocean, but in at least one case, if you mix a lawyer with a salt spray, you end up with an artist. Ruth Downes came to Texas in 1987 to attend law school. “I planned to get my degree and move away, but I’m still here,” she quips. For 25 years, she practiced law in Houston, but since the mid-90’s, the island has beckoned. Downes began volunteering aboard the Texas Seaport Museum’s tall ship Elissa. Eventually, she met her future husband, Jamie White. In late 2010, he accepted a job as director of the museum, and they moved to a historic home on Broadway that happened to have a rear structure with space for an art studio. Before moving to Texas, Downes went to art school earning a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the University of Illinois. “I grew up drawing and still have many scrapbooks and sketchbooks from childhood,” she says. “Then I went to law school and forced myself to stop drawing because it distracted me from paying attention in class.” In the end, law ended up distracting her from her first love. “I love so much about the law, but in recent years I felt I’d done it long enough, and it was time to focus on something else.” That something else came when she reawakened the talents of her youth to depict her new island surroundings. “There’s a nice sense of becoming reunited with my younger self,” she observes. “There’s also a sense of increasing openness and possibility that comes from starting afresh. There are beautiful scenes to paint everywhere: the sea, the seawall, buildings and houses, the sky, boats, birds, people.” As she waded back into the art world, Ruth methods to use the paints and threw that silly joined a local artist group led by Galveston black ink applicator for lettering away, creating watercolorist Sallie Anderson. In that group, she my own lettering tool to tell the stories. Susan Tyler who, in January 2014, opened With the tiles for each bench turned in, fired met her Tyler Studio gallery in a former corner store and installed, once again I thought my job was at 1201 Postoffice St. over. especially as she travels around the country with her husband.” Ruth’s nautical scenes gain authenticity from her past experience as a volunteer crew member aboard Elissa, as well as from knowing that her work has to pass the muster with her husband, a professional rigger on traditional ships for 30 years. “Her ability to capture marine scenes is inspiring,” Tyler says. “She is so true to the scene – where the ropes go, which way they’re twisted. She has a great appeal to followers of that style.” Occasionally Downes can be spotted around the island behind an easel painting the view before her. “I entered the plein air contest sponsored by the G. Lee Gallery in Galveston and realized what a different ballgame that is,” she says. “I’d love to develop my plein air painting skills.” While she still does some law work on a contract basis, Downes is happy with her new career. “I’ve always felt that having artistic ability is a gift and that I had a corresponding responsibility to develop that gift as far as possible,” she says. “Then I realized I wasn’t getting younger. If I was going to develop those abilities, it was time to start. It felt like returning to my roots. I’m very happy to be in Galveston and have met so many wonderful artists who are doing beautiful work. It’s a nurturing and welcoming community for an artist.” For more info and to view some of Downes’ work go to tylerstudio.org/ruth-downes. One side of the sword reflects the violent act and its gore and blood -- the physical act, the hands of Judith and her attendant. The other side of the blade reflects back on the woman who has committed herself to doing this brutal and brave task. One can only imagine the introspection that has lead her to this place.” “The Reflection in the Sword of Holofernes” is a show about women as told through this ancient heroic narrative. It is a show about painters committed to painting, and it is about speaking your truth in the most direct way you know how. Music Local Singer/Songwriter Sharis Roe Releases Her First LPWith Album, “Evolution of Love” five worldwide singles already to her
credit, Galveston resident and singer/songwriter Sharis Roe has released her first full-length album, “Evolution of Love,” a collaboration of Roe and the talents of local musicians Tony Sassi and George Douglas Lee. The sultry, give-you-chills voice of Sharis Roe, backed by Sassi’s formal music education and Lee’s 40+ years of recording experience, traverses across a myriad of styles that both display Roe’s vocal dexterity and keep the listener fully engaged. We had the opportunity to sit down with Sharis and talk about this latest endeavor and what it means to her. Island Guide: Is there a story behind the name of your CD, “Evolution of Love?” Sharis: Certainly! The “Evolution of Love” album tells that story, in fact. Island Guide: What was your inspiration for the CD? Sharis: It was inspired by a “roller coaster ride” of personal life events. I channeled the emotion of my own personal evolution into a tale of one woman’s reclamation of self. The 24-month project began with the story idea and a title/track list, which then blossomed organically into lyrics, composition, engineering, and mastering. Island Guide: How did the actual creation of the CD come about? Sharis: Three creative heads are definitely better than one. I am thrilled about the work Tony Sassi, George Douglas Lee, and myself have done together. The trio is capable not only musically but also technically, each with a studio of our own, and the majority of the album was compiled virtually and remotely. With each having the means to produce an amazing product autonomously, we worked separately but together to create the album of 12 original songs that transition seamlessly over an array of musical genres. Island Guide: We’ve seen album covers for your parents and other family members. Tell us your history for falling in love with music. Sharis: I was born into an artistic family, and I am no stranger to music or the stage. With renown Gospel recording artist Ted Roe for a father, and a mother who directs plays and musicals, I began singing, acting, playing the piano, and painting at a very young age. At the age of fifteen, I began writing poetry. I broke from music for a while to raise a family and develop a career in Information Technology, during which I also focused on my painting and wrote my first book, which was released in 2013. Island Guide: So, you have a long history of creativity. How was “Evolution of Love” born? Sharis: It was a true love affair. The following year after my book, I released my first single and then decided to take my poetry to another level with my first full-length album, “Evolution of Love.” The creative process from poetry to songwriting came almost supernaturally. I started with the story first, the poem second, then adding in the necessary song structure and rhyme. And so it happened, for ten tracks on the album. The other two tracks are George Douglas Lee originals, which I licensed from him, and spun new versions of. Island Guide: Who participated in the creation of the CD and how? Sharis: Production, lead vocals, graphic design, and engineering was by myself. Compositions are by Tony Sassi for nine tracks and George Lee for three tracks. The lyrics are by myself, Sharis Roe (ten tracks) and George Lee (two tracks). Backup vocals are by myself, Tony Sassi, and George Lee. Other featured guest musicians are Michael Alan Basham, Nova Adame, and Janie Adame. “Evolution of Love” was mastered by Product London in the United Kingdom. Island Guide: How would you describe the sound on this CD? Describe the style of music and your sound for someone who has never heard it. 20 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com
From the official press release: “The eclectic song combination emits the influences of reggae, hard rock, and even 80’s pop as it tells the largely fictional tale of a girl who finds a new love, loses it, then picks herself up and realizes that she already has everything she needs. The various styles were chosen to best represent the lyrics and emotions of each song, and together they journey through the many facets of love and relationships.” Sharis: Personally, I feel that everyone can relate to at least one song on the album, and for this album, it was important to cross genres to tell the full story appropriately. It plays like a book reads, the story from start to finish. Island Guide: Which is your favorite song? We know it’s like picking your favorite child, but give it a try. Sharis: Right, that’s a tough one! No song is favored over the other really, again mostly due to the cross-genre appeal. From the perspective of the crowd reviews we’ve already received, combined with my own view overall, I’d say “Ignition” and “No One Knows” are the top two. “Spend Tomorrows With Me II” has a special place in my heart, as that is a remake of my first single two and a half years later. Island Guide: You have a busy full-time job as well as a family. How did you balance all of that along with creating the CD. Sharis: Good question! Your guess is as good as mine! Some days I don’t know how I do all that I do, it’s like I’m on auto-pilot most the time. Being a project manager for a software company by day and an artist by night isn’t easy, but being said project manager certainly goes to my organization and time management abilities. Admittedly, it is not a perfect balance all the time, but thankfully my family and friends have patience when they know “Sharis is just busy getting stuff done at the moment.” They support my efforts. As well, I’ve learned that sleep is number one for my productivity, so I sleep quite a bit. Island Guide: Obviously, you strive to constantly express yourself creatively. Was there a point in your life where you recognized that internal “need” to create was calling you more and more? Tell us the story of how that came about. Sharis: Yes, there was a turning point. It was immediately after our daughters left the nest and went off to college. Something had to fill that void apparently, and the art and words just came flowing back again, unannounced and in full force. I don’t see an end in sight. Island Guide: What advice would you offer people who are just starting out, either individually, as a band, or an artist...to find the time to create? Sharis: Decide unequivocally that your music or other art is important to you, that you deserve to take the time to create it, and then make the time to create it - no excuses. The latter will
happen naturally once the first two are conquered. Island Guide: In addition to recording music, you are also an accomplished fine artist. Tell us about that. Sharis: My fresh, colorful, and contemporary paintings are born from my passionate approach to life and I have found an international audience. I have been a juror; my work has been exhibited in several juried shows across Texas and has been featured in several publications both online and print, such as “Teen Vogue” magazine. Though my painting has slowed over the last two years while working on this album, I continue to produce and sell my works mostly online via zatista.com. Zatista is a juried art website, and I’m proud to be an artist of theirs since 2009. Island Guide: When is the official release of your new EP? Sharis: It is available via all digital channels as of March 1st, 2017. The official CD release and signing party locally is scheduled for April 14th, 6-9pm at Island East-End Theatre Company, located at 2317 Mechanic St. in Downtown Galveston. It is open to the public; everyone is welcome to help us celebrate, and there is no charge to attend. Island Guide: Besides at the release party, can someone purchase the EP anywhere else? Sharis: Yes! The entire album or specific songs can be downloaded digitally via iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, CD Baby, and other popular digital sites and apps. Just search for ‘Sharis Roe’ on any of those channels. A physical signed copy can also be ordered via my website, sharisroe.com, at any time. I encourage everyone to come to the release party, to meet the team and get all of our signatures on a physical copy. Many don’t know that our margins on physical CDs are far greater than on digital downloads or streaming sites. Most will be appalled at the grim $.001 we get for one streaming play (that’s not a typo!) So, the best support people can show us is to own a signed copy. We’ve included 20 pages of liner notes and all song lyrics in the CD packaging as well, for added benefit. Island Guide: We ask these 5 questions to everyone. If you could pick one band to see live, living or dead, who would it be? Sharis: Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. I simply love their story, not only individually but as a husband and wife team too. I recently commissioned a painting by local artist Robert McBride, of Benatar and Giraldo for my studio, for continued inspiration. Island Guide: What was the first album you remember purchasing? Sharis: The Carpenters “Close to You” on cassette tape. Karen Carpenter has always inspired me given her clean, clear voice and lower vocal range too. That’s why I chose to cover and release the “Merry Christmas, Darling” single this past
Christmas. Island Guide: What piece of music equipment can you simply not live without? Sharis: As for hardware: my computer and mics. Depending on the style of the song, I’ll record with one of the three mics and sometimes two on the same song. As for software: Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro rocks my world. Island Guide: If I was to turn on your playlist, what song will it show you have played the most? Sharis: Usually it’s something classic rock or jazz, but right now it’s a new original song and recording by George Douglas Lee called “Puppeteer” where I’m singing lead and background vocals. You’ll hear more about that endeavor soon. Island Guide: What do you do on a day off? Sharis: What don’t I do? Something to do with music for sure (in and around other mundane things like grocery shopping, dry cleaning, and other errands) be that working on songs, marketing songs, practicing, researching, learning new tools and equipment, etc. Sometimes my husband even gets to see me. He’ll agree, I’m sure. Island Guide: Anything else you would like people to know? Sharis: I don’t claim to be “the best” at anything. I’m simply Sharis enjoying and creating this thing called life with a passion. Life isn’t what happens to us, it’s what we make it! Move it, shake it! Island Guide: Anyone you want to thank or acknowledge? Sharis: Yes, many people – including y’all, my Island Guide family. My mentors and co-creators Tony Sassi and George Douglas Lee, my parents Ted and Carolyn, my husband Kent, Michael Alan Basham, Jeb Adame and his three daughters, my Facebook fans, my Reverbnation fans, and everyone else who has supported this effort, even indirectly. It takes an army. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. Sharis is also the proud mother of two grown stepdaughters and currently resides in Galveston with her husband Kent DeJaynes. Although the studio has been the only stage so far for “Evolution of Love,” Sharis looks forward to performing live over the upcoming years while she takes a break from large recording projects and continues to challenge herself musically and artistically. Her second book releases this year as well, on April 1st, 2017. Signed copies of “Connection – Poetry, Passion and Love,” illustrated by her daughter Ashley DeJaynes, can also be purchased at the CD release party. “The Rob Landes Trio: Music from the Movies”
Sunday, March 12th, 4pm These returning Grand favorites will take you on a magical, musical journey through the movies. Time-honored oldies like “Over the Rainbow,” “Laura,” and “As Time Goes By” will take the spotlight. You’ll also enjoy Academy Award-winning melodies and other nominated songs that failed to win the golden statue. Finally, experience the drama and excitement that a musical score adds to a piece of film footage. First, you’ll watch a film clip without its musical background. Then be amazed by how a scene comes to life when the Rob Landes Trio adds the music into the filmed scene. Now, that’s entertainment!
