Exquisite Quality and Taste Combined By Terry Card
Quality and taste defines the difference between jerky purchased at the Beef Jerky Outlet and regular pre-packaged jerky available elsewhere. When people wonder why anyone would bother going to a specialty store to purchase jerky rather than just pick it up while buying gas or shopping for groceries – it comes back to the quality – and the taste – of the jerky sold at the Beef Jerky Outlet on The Strand. The Strand is in itself the premier high quality street in Galveston, so it is appropriate the Beef Jerky Outlet selected The Strand for its location. The Outlet opened for business on April 4, 2014. The negative impact of Hurricane Ike had a shuddering effect on the advertising firm that had occupied the space before the flood waters rose to the ceiling. Renovation took four to six months. Because everything had to be replaced, the electrical circuits, plumbing, lighting, the walls and the floor, all went into the trash bin. The replacement resulted in a warm, inviting, and airy outlet that caters to every imaginable taste when it comes to jerky. The shop carries over two hundred different varieties ranging from smoked, to Fire, and Sweet Cherry Moonshine. For those with more exotic tastes, discerning jerky lovers may choose from elk, bison, kangaroo, ostrich, pheasant, and many others. Stumped as to what to choose? Free samples allow the buyer to try the jerky prior to making a purchasing decision. This is a great opportunity to try something different. That being said, their traditional beef jerky is fantastic. Many of the shops are franchises, but this shop is an independent business owned by Cypress, Texas partners. The plant where all the jerky is prepared is located in Seymour, Tennessee. The Company headquarters is located in Dundee Michigan. The company philosophy and practice is to use only the finest cut of meat required for the lean properties desired in making jerky. The meat is cut where raised. For beef, the finest lean meat is the Eye of Round bottom cut, which provides a little more fat and therefore more flavor than cheaper cuts. In 2014, when the Galveston outlet opened, there were only twelve locations. Today, there are more than one hundred outlets, with another ninety-six in the planning stages. Locally, the manager of the Galveston and League City stores, Amy Gonzales, uses local
magazines and a sandwich board to provide advertising. The company chose Galveston because it is a tourist destination. The Strand, at the heart of the downtown, is a magnet for tourists from the cruise ships, general visitors, as well as local residents. Local residents make up thirty percent of the customer base with the other seventy percent comprised of tourists. The cruise ship passengers account for a healthy fifty percent of the tourist customers. Most of the advertising for these customers is by word of mouth. Some cruise customers also take business cards to pass on to their friends who in turn receive a discount on their purchases with the card. Amy will soon be taking on a new store, which is relocating from Tomball to The Woodlands. She is a hard working millennial who loves her job. Born in Houston, she and her mother, when she was just six years old, moved in with her grandparents in Wimberley, Texas, after her step-father died. After graduating from high school in Wimberley four years ago, she applied for a job with The Beef Jerky outlet when it opened here, and is on her way to managing three outlets. If a second outlet opens in Galveston, the company will be looking at a Seawall location. The alternative to Galveston is to open an outlet in Kemah. In either case, it is likely that she will manage either new outlet in addition to her current stores. She has found it is not all work and no play. As she says, she loves her job, but she loves her customers even more. She recounted one memorable experience in which she claims that she was emasculated by a three year old boy. In the shop, two of the many different items they carry are worm suckers and dried worms in a box. The little boy, upon discovering these, did not believe that anyone would eat them, but he challenged Amy, saying that if she ate one, he would eat one at the same time. She was horrified but she could not back down with a store full of gleeful and very interested observers. So, they both popped a worm in their mouths and chewed. She swore with a twinkle in her eye, it wasn’t all that bad. Armed with his newly purchased box of worms and other goodies, the boy and his mother happily exited the shop, leaving behind a delighted group of customers. In addition to the over 200 varieties of jerky available and the exotic offerings, the store consistently runs specials on different sized bags, ranging from four-ounce to eight-ounce to sixteen-ounce, and specials on snack-paks, which contain many different varieties of jerky. There are also specials on their exotic sticks including the very popular kangaroo and wild boar. The most popular of all the beef jerky brands are the prime rib, roasted garlic, and honey jalapeno. The quality and taste make a visit to the Galveston Beef Jerky Outlet at 2309 Strand a winning experience. The Bryan Museum, located in the historic Galveston Orphans Home at 1315 21st St., houses The Bryan Collection, one of the world’s largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West. Festivals Free Family Movies Downtown Upcoming Sunny days and mild nights make Galveston Island the perfect place to enjoy festivals at With Saengerfest Park year-round. Many festivals celebrate art, music, the beautiful weather and longer days, families are spending more and more time outdoors. Saengerfest Park, located in the heart of Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find affordable fun for the season. Saengerfest Park is a small square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District. Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for movie and music nights throughout the year. The park also hosts a number of events associated with Island festivals, including Dickens on The Strand, “Mardi Gras! Galveston,” and more. Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies in historic Downtown. Movies begin just after dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair for a free movie under the stars. Movie Nite takes place the first Saturday of each month through October. Mind, Body, Spirit Conference May 4th The Galveston Women’s Conference is
an all-day conference designed to educate women about health and women’s issues, equip them with skills to be successful in life and business, inspire them to be their best, and renew their spirit. The conference showcases dynamic speakers, a vendor exhibit area featuring unique products and services that appeal to women, fitness breaks to strengthen and rejuvenate the body, a Book Nook and VIP lounge with opportunities to meet authors and keynote speakers, a signature cocktail party to connect and network with other women and much more. Attendees will leave the conference feeling energized, inspired, and more prepared for life. This year’s Keynote Speaker is Monica Lewinsky. In a forum, “Confidential with Monica Lewinsky,” she will tell her story of overcoming and surviving years of being branded, scared, and humiliated - a woman seen by many and known by few. Monica Lewinsky is a social activist, a global public speaker, a contributing editor to “Vanity Fair,” and a consultant. She advocates for a safer social media environment and addresses such topics as digital resilience plus reputation, privacy, cultivating compassion, overcoming shame, and equality. Monica’s lens for these societal issues is focused on her myriad of unique and profound experiences: working in government - both in the White House and the Pentagon; the investigation that resulted from her time in Washington, D.C.; involvement in media projects as both producer and subject; as an entrepreneur and designer; and lastly, education. She graduated with a degree in Psychology from Lewis & Clark College (Portland, Oregon) and, living abroad for graduate school, earned a Master’s degree in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Lewinsky became known to the public in 1998 when it was revealed as part of a federal investigation that she had had an intimate relationship with then-President Bill Clinton. Overnight, at just 24 years old, she went unwillingly, from being an entirely private individual to a public figure on the global stage. The investigation unfolded against a backdrop of a changing media landscape with the advent of both competing 24-hour News
Networks and the Internet. With the birth of social media in recent years, Lewinsky saw the increasing proliferation of the perpetuation of shame and humiliation online. As someone who had experienced both, on the widest scale and at a young age, she saw that she could participate in the public discourse about online harassment and work to effect change. In 2014, Lewinsky authored an essay, titled “Shame and Survival,” for “Vanity Fair” in which she overlapped personal experiences and cultural observations (June 2014). The piece was nominated for a National Magazine Award. Today, Monica works with several anti-bullying organizations, including as an Ambassador to both the Diana Award’s Anti-Bullying Programme in the UK and Bystander Revolution in the US. She also supports Project Rockit, Ditch the Label, HeartMob, the Amanda Todd Legacy, and The Tyler Clementi Foundation. Monica sits on the board of the Childhood Resilience Foundation. 6th Annual Herb Fair at The Moody Gardens 6th Annual Gulf Coast Herb
Fair will be held at Moody Gardens on Wednesday, March 7th, 9am-2pm. The theme of this year’s fair is celebrating the herb of the year: Hops. Hops is the flower that gives beer its distinctive bittersweet tang. It also has medicinal uses, such as a component in stress relievers, anxiety reducers and sleep aids. And pillow and sachets often use hops along with lavender, rosemary and other herbs for their sweet smells. A noon luncheon sponsored by the Friends of Moody Gardens will feature Mark Dell’Osso, owner of Galveston Island Brewing Co. and Greg Whittaker, a home brewer using sargassum to
make his brew. Luncheon is $35 per person. Vendors selling herbs and other craft items will be available in the Visitor Center at Moody Gardens. The event is free and open to the public. Other lectures will be conducted by Galveston County Master Gardener and homebrewer John Jons, who will talk at 9:30am about growing and using hops. You have the writing of course, but you also have drawing, calligraphy, photography, and advertising. During this three day spring break camp, you will be making your own magazine. Not only will each child get to work on their own article - getting to interview one of the many amazing businesses in the Postoffice District, but they will also create, laugh, and learn. There will be special guests like Laura Elder of “Coast Monthly Magazine,” graffiti artist Gabrial Prusmack, and Miguel Cruz author of “Dancing Letter,” a book set to release in March of this year. Presented by The Grand 1894 Opera House, the Festival is recognized as one of the Gulf Coast region’s premier family spring events and is designed as an avenue to introduce children and their families to the arts. The festival offers live entertainment on four outdoor stages, as well as on The Grand’s stage indoors, and features over 40 activity booths each showcasing a variety of unique, hands-on activities for children and their families to enjoy. This year, there will be a Storytelling Tent. This intimate performance tent offers a variety of Storytellers, from “Mother Goose” to readings by local children’s authors - complete with milk and cookies - perfect for storytime. Presenting “Treasure Island” this year, Missoula Children’s Theatre works with a cast of 50 area students for a week prior to the Festival and then presents them in two performances on The Grand’s historic stage. Tall Ships Are Coming AprilFor the5th-8th to Galveston first time, a fleet of tall ships will sail
and race their way along the Gulf Coast to participate in the Tall Ships Challenge® Gulf Coast 2018 series of races and public maritime festivals. Kicking off this new event, Galveston Island will play host to the first stop of the 2018 challenge from April 5th-8th. Produced by Galveston Historical Foundation, in partnership with Tall Ships America, this family-friendly event will showcase Galveston’s rich maritime history. Tickets, ship information, and special event details are available at tallshipsgalveston.com. While in port, the ships will be open to the public for viewing, and many will feature dockside exhibits and lively interactions with crew. In addition to touring the ships, visitors will also have the opportunity to embark on the ships for exhibition sails during the festival. Between each of the ports, the ships will race to the next event. Tall Ships® Galveston will welcome visiting ships with an exciting Parade of Sail down Seawall Boulevard on the afternoon of Thursday, April 5th. This morning race takes runners along the beautiful scenery of Galveston Island and across a finish line of tiny bubbles. All camping gear and equipment required for an overnight stay at the park are included with each reservation. March 3rd, 19th, 17th (10-11am) - Beachcombing 101 - Join Ranger Lisa for a great shell hunting workshop, identification, and collecting expedition. Cold winter water makes this the best time for beachcombing, so dress for the weather and be prepared to get your feet wet. Start at the Nature Center for a brief park orientation before caravaning to the beach where you will review the basics, hand out equipment, and use the restroom before treasure hunting. March 3rd, 16th, 17th, 31st (1-2pm) - Paint Party - Learn to see Nature’s beauty in a new way. Let the beauty found in Galveston Island State Park inspire you to pick up a brush and lay down some color. Create a one-of-a-kind souvenir, and make some memories with Ranger Lisa. New Eco-Art Programming for 6th-12th Grade teachers focusing on the causes and consequences of poor water quality in Galveston Bay, is now taking applications. This Artist Boat’s program allows students and teachers in the counties surrounding Galveston Bay to create learning legacies on their school campus that will improve the water quality of Galveston Bay. Applications are due on March 19th.
Beautify the Bucket Contest Is now Taking Entries & Celebrates Earth Day April 21st
Express your artistic talents and love of the ocean by entering the Artist Boat Beautify the Bucket Competition. Registration is open now through September 1st. Winners will be announced in Galveston on September 23rd at an awards ceremony coinciding with the fall Adopt-A-Beach Coast-wide Cleanup. Participation is easy. Individuals and groups of all ages can download the Registration and information packet and return it to Kendall Guidroz, Artist Boat education program coordinator, at kguidroz@artistboat.org. Entrants will paint blue trash barrels destined for Galveston beaches based on a theme: ocean organisms, marine debris, coastal and marine ecosystems, or Galveston recreational activities.

Mondays, March 5th-26th (5:30-7:30pm) - Life Drawing Studio Be sure to reserve your space early. Drawing the human figure from a live model is the foundation of nearly all studio art programs. If you have an interest in portrait painting, character design, comics/ manga, game design, illustration, animation, fashion design, anatomical drawing, or just learning to “see” like an artist, this is for you. Life Drawing Studio at Galveston Arts Center meets for two hours on select Monday evenings. Live models pose for short “gesture” and longer poses of up to 90 minutes. Focus is on study of the human figure in its natural state; models typically appear, nude or occasionally semi-clothed/draped. Artists are invited to bring their own materials and supplies. Cost is $40 per 4-week block. Tuesdays, March 6th-27th (6-8pm) Ceramic Studio - This is offered in 4-week blocks following ArtWalk. Learn hand-building techniques in pottery, figurative sculpture, and glazing with earthenware clay. Create sculptural relief tiles, full 3-d sculpture, functional pottery and tableware, figures, and more. This course uses methods that don’t require a potter’s wheel, including pinchpots, coil construction, slab-construction. Students will learn the anatomy of a vessel, how to securely join corners and handles, make lids fit properly, and various kinds of surface treatments, textures and glazes. All materials and supplies provided. Beginners welcome. Cost is $100. Wednesdays, March 7th-April 11th (5:30-7:30pm) - Drypoint Etching Printmaking Studio - Explore a variety of professional printmaking techniques with exhibiting artist Amber Kaiser of Burning Bones Press. Classes are offered in 6-week sessions, each focusing on a particular technique such as block printing, monotype, drypoint, collagraph, and screen printing. Students may continue in a favorite style or method during subsequent sessions after taking the introductory session. Nothing matches the excitement of rolling your paper through the press and pulling out your first original print. Learn how to correctly sign and number editions, create a series of prints, and prepare and mat your work for safe storage or framing. This is for ages 14-adult. Materials provided. The next 4-week block is April 25th-May 30th, Screen Printing is the topic. Cost is $150. Friday, March 9th (5-7pm) - Art Happy Hour Open Studio Night - Select Fridays after ArtWalk, GAC hosts a casual open-studio session in the spacious Studio Classroom. Bring a project to work on or use some of the basic art materials provided for a self-guided activity. Enjoy the company and inspiration of fellow artists as well as music and refreshments as you unwind from your week. Open to adults and teens. Spring Break Art Camps Offered at GAC For families staying
in Galveston this year for spring break, or those who will be entertaining young guests, Galveston Arts Center has kids’ creative needs covered over the break. GAC will host Art Camps Monday-Friday, March 12th-16th. Campers can enroll in either of two camps: one from 9am-12 noon for artists in grades K-2, and the other from 1-4pm for artists in grades 3-7. Grade levels are merely suggestions, but all students must at least be in Kindergarten. These camps are three hours a day for five days and will allow students to dive into a project and explore it over the course of the week. Campers are encouraged to bring a snack. Art Camps are held in the fully accessible studio classroom at Galveston Arts Center at 2127 Strand. Galveston Arts Center members can receive a $30 discount off the $150 tuition for the week. All materials are included.

Time Travel Art Camp – Grades K-2 (Monday-Friday, 9am12 noon) - Time Travel through art with teaching artist Rachel Stokes. Each day, campers will cover a different time period in art, from prehistoric cave-painting to imagining the art of the future. Kids will create multimedia flat and 3-D take-home and group art projects for hands-on exploration of art history, new skills, and creative problem-solving. For artists in Kindergarten-grade 2. World Travel Art Camp – Grades 3-7 (Monday-Friday, 1-4pm) - See the world in art with teaching artist Cristal Aldrete. Campers will explore and imagine art in different locales, paying special attention to how traditional cultural art forms influence contemporary art and new media in those places. Third Coast Music Festival The Third Coast Music Festival takes center stage the last weekend in April with 35 bands and 50 shows held on historic Galveston Island. This new island festival features bands of numerous genres including blues, country, Cajun, soul, folk, Latin, and more. This is a unique opportunity to hear great live music in unique venues throughout Galveston. This isn’t a festival in a field, it’s a unique experience for guests to hear some of the nation’s best live music performing across the island including Rodney Crowell, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Mike and the Moonpies, Two Tons of Steel, Peterson Brothers Band, and many more. A highlight will be Sunday, April 29th (6:30pm), Texas music legend Rodney Crowell will perform at the The Grand 1894 Opera House. Born and raised in Houston, Crowell is one of the most influential singer-songwriters of his generation. His music has garnered numerous awards from the Americana Music Association, Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association, in addition to winning two Grammys. Joe Robinson, whose accolades include winning “Australia’s Got Talent” and being voted Best New Talent by “Guitar Player” magazine readers, will open. March 18th (9am) - HGTV’s Anitra Jay will be in concert at the downtown branch of Galveston’s Own Farmers Market till 1pm. Anitra Jay is an acoustic soul singer-songwriter based in Houston. With a recent musical feature on HGTV’s Tiny House Hunters, Anitra Jay presents a whimsically soulful all-cautionto-the-wind interpretation of music. Born and raised in New Orleans, Anitra's vocals highlight her roots in Jazz, Soul, and Gospel. Anita will also perform at MOD Coffeehouse March 24th at 7pm. March 23rd (8:30pm) - Paige Lewis will be at Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe. Splitting time between L.A. and Texas, Paige Lewis is a singer/songwriter with a passionate voice, a vibrant guitar, and an even crazier schedule.
