Turtles About Town
Turtles About Town is a city wide project in Galveston. The project has been put in place to help raise awareness about the Kemps Ridley sea turtle while helping drive tourism and business to the local economy. Clay Cup Studios, Galveston’s local interactive art studio, has partnered with Turtle Island Restoration (TIRN). TIRN is a leading advocate for the world’s oceans and marine wildlife. Sponsors in the community will sponsor a turtle statue. Local artists then work with the sponsor or business to come up with a theme for their turtle. The turtles will then be installed at the desired location. To get involved, email turtlesabouttown@gmail.com, or call (409)762-2529. There will also be a smaller traveling turtle. Ridley will get to travel to participating businesses where locals and Island visitors can be on the lookout to snap their picture with him. Ridley will be auctioned off to help raise money for Turtle Island Restoration.

Art of Poetry at GAC withEveryPoet John Harn Thursday through-September 13th,
5:30-7pm, this ongoing workshop with poet John Harn is held at Galveston Art Center, 2127 Strand St., Galveston. Are you currently writing poetry? Do you want to start? This weekly writer’s workshop is open to poets of all levels of experience. Class members will support each other with advice, strategies, and camaraderie to help each writer find his or her unique voice. Join any Thursday to start your 6-week class. New material will be covered every week. This class is open to anyone 18 or older. There will be a Poetry Open House and registration Saturday, May 19th. Check in at Facebook for times and to RSVP. The class is part Poetry Appreciation and part Poetry Writing, with a focus on free-verse, rather than poetry that follows form. Bring your new or very recent work. Class will follow a workshop format, with the goal of continuous writing, discovery, and improvement. Taught by John Harn, each week John brings in poems for the class to discuss. Students get the poems in their email before class. Students also bring in poems they have newly discovered to discuss. John will offer resources so students can find outside poems easily (library and online poetry journals). Once per session, John arranges for a visiting poet to join the class via Skype. Discussions are mostly on technique, but open to any Q&A. John familiarizes students with the visiting poet’s work prior to the Skype visit. Students are encouraged to attend one poetry reading of their choosing during the 10-week session. Class is held in one of Galveston Arts Center’s three exhibition galleries, so you will also be immersed in contemporary art. Half of each class will be spent working on student poems, and the other half will be spent looking at the work of contemporary poets, with attention to technique. Class will follow a workshop format with the goal of continuous writing, discovery, and improvement. To sign-up go to galvestonartscenter.org.

May 2018 Treasure of the Month:
Fides Senechal’s First Communion Memorabilia
During the month of May, Rosenberg Library will exhibit a beautiful, hand-carved mother-ofpearl rosary which was presented to Galveston resident Fides Senechal Boening (1891-1966) when she received her first communion at Sacred Heart Church on May 1, 1904. Displayed with the rosary is a photographic portrait of Boening wearing her first communion dress with a traditional white veil. These items were a gift of her daughter, Mary Agnes Boening, and are preserved in the Rosenberg Library Special Collections. Fides Senechal was born in Galveston May 21, 1891. Her parents, Louis and Rosa Senechal, owned a corner grocery store at 1602 Winnie. The family lived in a residence next door and also built a second residential property at 1608 Winnie in 1907. These structures still stand in Galveston’s East End historic district. In 1913, Fides married William Paul Boening. The couple moved to Kingsville, Texas in 1916 where Mr. Boening worked as a railroad roundhouse foreman. They had one daughter, Mary Agnes Boening, who was born in 1919. The family later lived in Hearne, Texas until W.P. Boening’s death in 1941. Fides Senechal returned to Galveston and lived in the family home at 1608 Winnie until her death on July 16, 1966. Her funeral mass was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral and she is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Galveston. The Treasure of the Month is located on the library’s second floor near the East Entrance. It can be viewed during regular library hours, 9am-9pm Monday-Thursday, and 9am-6pm Friday-Saturday. For more information, contact(409)763-6397 or visit rosenberg-library-museum.org.

of Henry Rosenberg’s charitable bequests. Rosenberg Library has created a free, monthlong program, “Passport to the Past,” to celebrate this milestone. People of all ages are encouraged to participate. When Galveston businessman and philanthropist Henry Rosenberg died in May of 1893, his last will and testament was made public. To the great surprise of local residents, Mr. Rosenberg left the bulk of his sizable estate to fund various charitable projects around the city. Among these were the construction of a library, an orphanage, a church, a monument honoring veterans of the Texas Revolution, and public drinking fountains for both people and animals. Of the original seventeen Rosenberg fountains, only nine still exist. Each fountain bears a unique design. Henry Rosenberg’s will also funded the construction of a YMCA building, but it was torn down in 1954. Fortunately, many of Mr. Rosenberg’s gifts to Galveston can still be found today. “Passport To The Past” provides a unique opportunity to explore the island and uncover the legacy of Henry Rosenberg. Visit Rosenberg Library (2310 Sealy St.) or the Bryan Museum (1315 21st St.) to pick up your free “Passport To The Past” booklet and map. Participants who visit all fifteen sites in the passport will receive a free ceramic mug or stainless steel tumbler of their choice. Prizes are redeemable at Rosenberg Library (while supplies last).

The Arts
René Wiley Gallery: Painting Her Soul By Terry Card
What makes the René Wiley Gallery successful? Located at Postoffice Street and 22nd, Galveston’s renowned attraction, the Artwalk, draws thousands of people every 6 weeks to the galleries that line Postoffice Street. The location helps – but what really makes the René Wiley Gallery so successful – is René Wiley. She paints with her soul. Her distinctive style developed as she says “by putting stuff in that means something to me – taking out the unnecessary – and discarding the advice of others, including teachers.” The use of geometric patterns of light ingrained into her Galveston landscapes combines with her use of warm colors for the background, especially orange, which she overlays with cool colors. Her use of complementary colors and the thickness of her brush strokes create a very vibrant color palette. The business end of the gallery is run by her husband, Captain Ben Wiley. As their children say, “Daddy can run the business, but he can’t paint. Momma can paint!” And oh, how Momma can paint! René told a story about a longtime childhood friend who now lives in Louisiana. René’s friend was telling René about a new friend she had over to her house, and as soon as the woman walked into the living room she stopped dead and exclaimed, “Is that a René you have on your wall? Oh my God, is it an original?” The woman could not believe it when René’s friend showed her five other originals she had, until she explained about their longtime friendship. René was astounded that the woman knew her paintings. Ben was not surprised since they have buyers from all over the world. René was born in Houston and attended Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, majoring in Art with a minor in nutrition. Her mother was an impressionist painter so René comes by her painting talent honestly. Her father was a businessman. Ben was born in Austin and moved from there to Houston/Pasadena. After studying electrical work he became a contractor. This was followed by a stint in the car business. By 2000, after becoming a fishing guide on a part-time basis he formed a partnership with a priest, bought a boat and went into the fishing guide business full time. For this reason the Wiley family moved from Conroe to Sea Isle on Galveston Island. After opening the gallery, they decided to
move into the city in 2012 to a house on 18th Street. Then three years ago on René’s urging, they bought a farm house on 2 acres in Hitchcock close to their family, which they are currently renovating. The gallery opened in April 2009. Prior to that, René showed her work by placing it on consignment with other galleries in Galveston. Standard practice then is a 50/50 split with the gallery on any paintings sold. After Ike, the Pilate Studio that had occupied the space did not renew their lease, so the owner, Mr. Brown, who wanted a gallery to lease the space, came to a long term agreement with René and Ben. With the help of the owner, they renovated the space and opened for business. Initially, René tried to make the gallery her studio, but after a month, René’s mom got sick, so René moved her studio to Hitchcock, to paint and look after her mom. At this point, Ben retired from his business and took over the day to day running of the gallery. René, who is a prolific painter, had hundreds of paintings ready for sale on opening, and Ben said that because of that, the gallery made one year’s expenses in the first month. Most of their sales are to first, second, and third time homeowners as well as to those who have a second home in Galveston. Ninety-five percent of clients are René Wiley collectors of her original paintings as well as giclée prints of her paintings. In addition, the Gallery supports many local charities by donating paintings for auction. On occasion, she also does commissioned paintings, like George Mitchell’s portrait. ArtWalk is, in René’s opinion, a “two thumbs up” event for the Gallery. René spends six weeks painting a new show before each ArtWalk. ArtWalk creates a deadline for her, which she finds to be a good energizer. She paints all day every day for ten months of the year before taking two months off to spend time with her children and grandchildren, most of whom live close to her in the Hitchcock area. As Captain Ben says about his wife, “She paints thousands and
thousands of hours. In addition to being a hard worker, she is very humble and as the song goes, ‘she doesn’t know she’s beautiful.’ Just don’t tell her anything you don’t want others to know, because she can’t keep secrets. And the grandkids all fight to be with her.” The other artists who show at the gallery have been with them since they opened. There are, of course their daughters Rachel Wiley-Janota and Samantha Wiley, plus James D. Phillips, Brenda J. Bunten-Schloesser, Darlene Wall, and Dale Hooks. Each works in a different medium but they are all very good at producing works that sell. As Ben says, “They are a gallery – not a museum.” Ben not only runs the gallery, he is involved in all aspects of the business. Their program is cumulative, providing different paintings for publication in a variety of media avenues - everything from posters to magazine covers and a few others inbetween. For René, there are certain memories of her work that stay with her. Her mother, also a painter, encouraged her, but because of their very different styles, René was pleasantly shocked when one day her Mother bought an original abstract painting she did of birds. Her mother had never bought anything of hers before. They made a giclée print of the painting for René’s sister-in-law and an extra one that they hung in the gallery. Within two hours of hanging the print, two women from very different walks-of-life entered the gallery. The meager lady said that if she had the money, she would buy the print immediately. “It speaks to me!” The rich lady had the exact same reaction. It meant a lot to René that two people of very different backgrounds could love her art with the same passion. René Wiley Gallery is located at 2128 Postoffice St. and is open every day from 11am to 6pm. For more info, phone (409)7509077. You can find René on Facebook. You can purchase paintings and giclée at renewileygallery.com as well as place custom orders.

Galveston Arts Center Continues “Stratiforms”
On Exhibit Through May 27th Galveston Art Center is located at 2127 Strand St., Downtown Galveston. For more info call (409)763-2403 or go to galvestonartscenter.org. There are three exhibitions up this month. Saturday, May 19th, 2-3pm, there will be an Artist Talks with Robin Dru Germany, Page Piland, and Jason Makepeace. On the first-floor of the gallery, the exhibition “Stratiforms” features work that examines layers in the natural environment through photography, sculpture, and painting by Robin Dru Germany, Jason Makepeace, and Page Piland. In the second-floor 1878 Gallery, Chance Dunlap presents his hand-crafted fishing lures alongside a selection from his personal collection of folk art lures for the exhibition “Best Chance.” In the second-floor Brown Foundation Gallery, Marcos Lutyens and Laray Polk’s installation, “The Trinity River Project,” presents new perceptions of the Trinity River. “Stratiforms” features the work of three artists who examine layers in the natural environment through photography, sculpture, and painting. These artists demonstrate acute observations of place, process, and materials, specifically in reference to wood and water. Robin Dru Germany portrays waterways in her recent series, titled “Surface Tension,” through photographs that reveal the parallel systems between water and air. Navigating the creeks, rivers and lakes from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast, Germany reveals these intertwined environments that are laden with implications for our future. Jason Makepeace excavates miniature kayaks and oars from whole logs in his “Moldable Subtractions” series. As an avid kayaker, these works honor the shape and form of the vessels he often uses to navigate our coastal waterways. Page Piland’s trompe l’oeil paintings reveal mirrored surfaces painted from the cross sections of reclaimed wood taken from sites he encounters in his daily life. Trained as a sculptor and painter, Chance Dunlap’s recent practice has focused on his passion for handmade fishing lures. “Best Chance” features a
selection of Dunlap’s hand-crafted lures, along with examples of folk art lures from the artist’s personal collection. These works mirror Dunlap’s own experience and interests as a fisherman, collector, and maker of lures. Created with the utilitarian and hopeful gesture of attracting something you can’t see from the surface, Dunlap’s tackle making possesses the formal qualities of form, texture, and color, while also harboring a relationship to place. In conjunction with the exhibition, visitors are invited to participate in an ongoing lure swap. Bring a lure and trade it for a selection of ‘bait’ left by other visitors. “The Trinity River Project” is a collaborative exhibition by Marcos Lutyens and Laray Polk, seeking to provide an opportunity for viewers (as readers and contemplators) to become uprooted in their perceptions of the Trinity River, then re-rooted in the spirit of new possibilities. This project began with a series of ten essays, recounting the complex history and relationship between Dallas and the Trinity River from pre-colonial times to date. The essays, published by “D Magazine,” were followed by a weekend of guided meditations conducted by Marcos Lutyens, and a physical exhibition at the Liliana Bloch Gallery in December, 2016. The presentation of this project at GAC traces the river from Dallas to the mouth of the Trinity River at Galveston Bay. Events May 7th-14th (5:30-7:30pm) - Life Drawing Studio - If you have an interest in portrait painting, character design, comics/manga, game design, illustration, animation, fashion design, anatomical drawing, or just learning to “see” like an artist, this is for you. ‘May the Force be with You’ at Rosenberg Library
About The Book Jennie May Walker Burleson was envied for having everything a woman of her time could want—the privileged upbringing, the dazzling good looks, the dashing war hero husband. She was admired for demonstrating that a woman could want more, from the front of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession to the bottom of a Mesoamerican archaeological dig. But as she stood over the body of her husband’s second wife, gun in hand, society’s envy and admiration quickly hardened into pity and scorn. T. Felder Dorn examines the complicated trajectory of her life as socialite, suffragist and shooter. About the Author T. Felder Dorn has previously published four books: “Challenges on the Emmaus Road: Episcopal Bishops Confront Slavery, Civil War, and Emancipation” (University of South Carolina Press, 2013), “Death of a Policeman, Birth of a Baby: A Crime and Its Aftermath” (Xlibris, 2012), “The Guns of Meeting Street: A Southern Tragedy” (University of South Carolina Press, 2001), and “The Tompkins School, 1925–1953: A Community Institution” (Attic Press, 1994). About the Museum Book Club Rosenberg Library Museum Book Club offers participants the chance to experience art and literature in a more interactive way. Members have the opportunity to view rarely exhibited art and historical artifacts from the library’s permanent collection as they discuss related books. Registration is required for all Museum Book Club meetings. Established book clubs are encouraged to participate. Saturday, May 12th (2-4pm) - “Between Worlds Never to Return” by Barbara Ortwein Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Barbara Ortwein, author of three historical novels about emigration from Germany to the Texas Hill Country in the MidNineteenth Century. Germany in 1844 was a country divided into small kingdoms, lacking in the development enjoyed by neighboring European states, with much of its population suffering in poverty. In answer to these circumstances, a group of German noblemen launched a plan to establish a new homeland in the Southwestern United States and began to plan and promote the “Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas.” Many Germans clamored for the promise of a new life on the American frontier. The first of three novels, “Between Worlds Never to Return” follows the journey of Karl Engelbach, a revolutionary who had spoken out against the injustices of German rule. Karl and his son must make their way across the countryside, navigating the various local customs and avoiding the authorities, to reach Bremen, where ships embark for America’s shores. The story follows their travels across Germany and overseas to the port in Charleston, where they join efforts with other immigrants, and plunge into the wilds of the interior toward the Texas Hill Country, with the many difficulties and hostilities those territories were known for. Barbara Ortwein brings authenticity to the story of these ordeals with extensive historical research on the lives and journeys of many of the German immigrants who made their way to Texas, and who

established townships in the Hill Country area. The second novel, “In the Heart of Texas But Not Yet Home,” follows the Engelbachs as they establish homesteads and begin trading with the Comanches and then encounter new difficulties at the start of the Civil War. Copyright 2015, Weisenburg Verlag Saturday, May 26th (2-4pm) “La Mordida” by Jim Sanderson Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Jim Sanderson, author of “La Mordida,” a West Texas border patrol crime thriller. In this sequel to El Camino Del Rio, agent Dolph Martinez leads a U.S. Border Patrol task force based in Alpine, Texas, chartered to combat crime and corruption in the border regions of the U.S. and Mexico where ‘la mordida,’ the payoff, is a way of life. He’s a walking embodiment of the area’s violent, cross-cultural clash, and his soul is torn between the two cultures, making him a very special lawman in an unforgiving place. Martinez discovers a scam for luring young women across the border with promises of U.S. citizenship through marriage who are then sold into bondage as laborers or prostitutes. Now he’s become an unwitting pawn in a larger conspiracy that could end with his corpse among the sunbaked bones of the border dead. Jim Sanderson is the author of “Nothing to Lose,” a private-eye mystery thriller set in Beaumont and East Texas. He is an award winning author with a Ph.D. in fiction writing from Oklahoma State University. He was born in San Antonio and is currently Professor of English at Lamar University in Beaumont. Much of his work is set in Texas, particularly West Texas and the border. Copyright 2002, Brash Books

Her perspective now is that of a woman who’s gone through many storms and witnessed their sometimes-beautiful aftermaths as well. With her new release, “Luna Negra and the Daughter of the Sun,” Morales sought to reach even more deeply into her soul. Drawing from a creative
palette informed by the rhythms, colors, and flavors of the Southwest - from the painteddesert skies of her native Tucson, Arizona where she and cousin Linda Ronstadt grew up, to the seasalted air of Houston where she moved at 18, and the history-filled city of San Antonio where she now lives - she’s crafted an album of maturity, sensitivity, and strength. On each of its 11 tracks - all but one of which were written or co-written by Morales she confirms that she is a woman in touch with her emotions and inner power. Lyrics, sung in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, also convey the promise of new beginnings. On the album’s sole cover, “Pena, Penita, Pena” Morales taps into the pain of losing her mother, whose poetic influence permeates every song, especially those Morales sings in her mother’s native language. The song features lead guitar by David Pulkingham with Morales on classical guitar and Michael “Cornbread” Traylor on bass. Though Morales, who discovered the song while her mother was dying of cancer, imbues it with sadness, she makes it sound like a gentle sunset serenade and reports proudly that when she played it for her cousin, Ronstadt responded, “I would have definitely recorded that!” Morales recorded six albums as one-half of the duo Sisters Morales before releasing her solo debut, “Beautiful Mistake,” in 2012. Lisa has also worn a producer’s hat with the highly acclaimed production on Hayes Carlls’ “Flowers & Liquor,” and co-wrote “Waiting For the Stars to Fall” with Hayes Carll on his CD “Trouble In Mind.” Tickets for this concert are $20 and available at prekindle.com.
