To Do

The 45th Annual Festival Returns November 30th-December 2nd to Strand District For 45 years, Galveston Historical Founda-

tion’s Dickens on The Strand festival has highlighted Downtown Galveston’s Victorian-era architecture while providing a one-of-a-kind holiday destination filled with the sights and sounds of Charles Dickens’ work. This year’s event continues that tradition with new entertainers and events, returning favorites, and family-friendly programming. This year’s festival begins Friday, November 30th with free admission to Fezziwig’s Beer Hall from 5-9pm, and continues with ticketed admission Saturday, December 1st 10am-9pm, and Sunday, December 2nd 12 noon-6pm. Tickets purchased before November 30th are $13 for adults and $7 for children ages 7-12. Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for adults and $9 for youth. Discounted tickets for GHF members are available for $10 in advance or $12 at the gate. Tickets are available online at dickensonthestrand.org, by calling, (409)765-7834, or at all area Randall’s stores beginning November 5th. Attendees in Victorian costumes receive $8 entry. “This year marks the 45th anniversary of Dickens on The Strand. Our holiday festival highlights the wonderful era of Charles Dickens in a backdrop of some of the nation’s finest Victorian architecture,” states GHF Executive Director, Dwayne Jones. “Everyone who comes to our event shares in the beginning of the holiday season where the spirit of ‘A Christmas Carol’ fills the streets. Join us for our annual festival of costumes, food, and entertainment.”

The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on multiple stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers, and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and gift items. Three descendants of Charles Dickens will grace the festival as GHF welcomes Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens, a greatgreat-great-grandson; Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, a great-great-great-granddaughter; and Jane Dickens Monk, a great-great-granddaughter. All descendants will be at numerous events throughout the weekend.

New in 2018 Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens – Great-great-greatgrandson of Charles Dickens British actor Ollie Dickens, who recently graduated from LAMDA, one of the finest drama training academies in the world, and having previously graduated from the University of York with honors in writing, directing, and performance, makes his return to Galveston for this year’s festival. Ollie’s love for his heritage began 20 years ago when he first arrived on the island and had a minor role as Tiny Tim during his father’s dramatic readings of “A Christmas Carol.” He is the latest in a long tradition of Dickens descendants to participate in the festival and is looking forward to committing the same level of energy, intensity, and flair to his readings as his greatgreat-great grandfather would have done…if at all possible! Dickens After Dark Holders of this limited ticket will gain access to a private event hidden within the Dickens on The Strand grounds. Held on Saturday, December 1st, 8-10pm, guests will receive the location a week before the event and enjoy unique performances, drink, and revelry for this new addition to the 45th annual Victorian event, hosted by British actor, and greatgreat-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens. Tickets are $50 per person and reservations are required.

Returning Favorites A Dickens Soiree at 1892 Bishop’s Palace Featuring specialty acts, award-winning performers and carefully curated food and drink options, last year’s soiree was one of the weekend’s highlights, and it’s back again for 2018! Held at the breathtaking 1892 Bishop’s Palace on Friday, November 30th, 6:30pm, attendees will enjoy live music by Houston’s Two Star Symphony, a special acrobatics presentation by Cirque La Vie, and appearances by special guests including a reading by ‘Ollie’ Dickens, great-great-greatgrandson of Charles Dickens. Tickets are $75.

Breakfast with Dickens The great-great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, Jane Monk, isn’t just coming to this year’s event to take in the sights and share her heritage, she’s also there to cook a traditional English breakfast! Join Jane, and the Island’s favorite award-winning chef Mary Bass, at the beautiful 1892 Bishop’s Palace on Saturday, December 1st (8am) or Sunday, December 2nd (10am). Tickets are $75 and reservations are required. Fezziwig’s Friday Night Mr. Fezziwig was everything Ebenezer wasn’t, and we pay tribute to his jovial personality at our Fezziwig’s Beer Hall. Join Friday evening, November 30th, 5-9pm, for specialty acts, hearty brews, and new friends all hosted by Dickens descendant Jane Monk. There will also be a specialty cocktail chosen from Cedric Dickens’ book “Drinking With Dickens.” Admission is free for this lively start to the 45th anniversary.

Festival Highlights

Along with browsing the many booths and vendors, the festival weekend also hosts a multitude of spirited fun with events such as the crowd favorite Whimsical Whisker Revue (a facial hair contest for the bearded and the dandy), the Dickens Victorian Bed Races, Victorian Costume Contest, and daily parades through Galveston’s National Historic Landmark Strand District. Special events also include: Salute To Sunset onboard the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA The Texas Seaport Museum transforms to a London wharf for this toast to the end of the day and beginning of the evening. The 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA welcomes you aboard Saturday, December 1st at 4:30pm for heavy appetizers, cocktails, cannon fire, and special guests leading up to Saturday night’s Pickwick’s Lanternlight Parade. Tickets are $50 per person and reservations are required. Midtown Tavern has taken on the task of giving over 100 kids a Christmas they won’t forget and they need your help. After you select your child, the rest is simple. Refer to your child’s information that you picked for sizes and specific needs, then simply go shopping. They ask that all gifts be new and unused. Then, wrap your gifts and make sure each one is labeled with your child’s name, and bring them to 2501 Azalea Court, Galveston or to Midtown Tavern by December 10th. Please call or text when you are on your way to (409)256-7352 Then December 18th, it’s party time for everyone! and the People Who Love Them” by Christopher Durang will be on stage November 16th – December 8th with a Sunday matinee on December 2nd at 2pm. Christopher Durang turns political humor upside down with this raucous and provocative satire about America’s growing homeland “insecurity.” “Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them” tells the story of a young woman suddenly in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married when drunk, a terrorist? Or just crazy? Or both? Is her father’s hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? Why does her mother enjoy going to the theatre so much? Does she seek mental escape, or is she insane? Honing in on our private terrors both at home and abroad, Durang oddly relieves our fears in this black comedy for an era of yellow, orange, and red alerts. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening at 8pm. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at islandetc.org. Island ETC (East-End Theatre Company) is Galveston’s only professional production company that produces year-round. ETC is located at 2317 Mechanic St. in Downtown Galveston. November 9th (6pm): Opening Reception for Maxfield Parrish: The Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Murals - An upcoming exhibition at The Bryan Museum in Galveston combines wealth, beauty, and high-stakes art theft. In 1912, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, heiress, scion, and founder of Manhattan’s Whitney Museum, commissioned American artist Maxfield Parrish to create a set of murals for her Long Island mansion’s art studio. Nearly ninety years later, two of the nine murals were stolen in a daring and sophisticated robbery. Thieves entered a West Hollywood art gallery through the roof, disabled motion sensors, and alarms, and cut two of the paintings from their frames. The two murals are still missing and the heist is on the FBI’s list of Top Ten International Art Crimes. The Bryan Museum’s exhibition is your only opportunity to see all nine murals together, at least in spirit - prints of the two missing murals will be on display. These murals are arguably the finest works Parrish ever created. Originally installed in the reception room of Whitney’s art studio, the large-scale paintings were created from 1914 to 1918. Parrish’s paintings convey a sense of magic through their imagined and idealized neo-classical imagery. Parrish’s popularity was staggering, with one in four American homes displaying his art during the first half of the 20th century. This will be on view November 11th-April 11th.

November 17th (12 noon-2pm): “Winds of Change” by Jo Adams McAuley “Winds of Change” is a blending of history and fiction that tells the story of a woman and a nation as they come of age. In the face of two of the biggest tragedies in history, a young woman perseveres and eventually prospers through strength, courage, and love. She survives the United States’ most deadly natural disaster, the Galveston hurricane of 1900, and the demise of the “unsinkable” Titanic. Instead of breaking her, these tragedies set her on the path to success and love. World events and a changing culture impact her and her family to weave a story of tragedy, triumph, and self-awakening. November 24th (2-4pm): “100 Things to Do in Texas before You Die” by E. R. Bills Many Texas travel guides are all hat and no cattle, put together by temporary or transplanted Texans who aren’t well familiar with the state in its entirety, much less the experiences and marvels that express bona fide Lone Star spirit. Get in the Holiday Spirit This “Unforgettable Galveston Month atideaRosenberg Library Characters” Book Signing Have no what to do with your chilJoin Jan Johnson on Saturday, November 10th, 2-4pm at #galvestonhistory’s Eighteen Seventy One, 2002 Strand, Downtown Galveston, for a signing of her new book, “Unforgettable Galveston Characters.” From financiers of the Texas Revolution to contestants in the Pageant of Pulchritude, the shores of Galveston enticed and cultivated a host of memorable men and women. Bishops and bookies, concert pianists and cotton tycoons - all left an indelible print on their remarkable home. Magnolia Willis Sealy and the members of the Women’s Health Protective Association reshaped the ravages of the Great Storm into the glories of the Oleander City. The benevolent activism of Norris Wright Cuney transformed the social landscape, while actress Charlotte Walker and painter Boyer Gonzales Sr. extended the island’s cultural reach abroad. Jan Johnson keeps company with Galveston’s most fascinating characters. A fifth-generation “BOI,” Jan Marie Johnson has been seriously studying Galveston’s rich history since 1982 when she became a step-on tour guide. Beneath the moniker “Galveston Island Gal,” she started her quest for a Master of Literature degree (with the intention of writing). Her first book, “Walking Historic Galveston: A Guide to Its Neighborhoods,” was written before Hurricane Ike devastated the island but was published after the storm in April 2009. Her second book followed in December 2012, “Beyond the Beaten Paths: Driving Historic Galveston.” Jan’s third, “Unforgettable Galveston Characters,” is a natural progression from the places to the people of the island. Oppy, Twyla and The Wolf with George Douglas Lee Saturday, December 1st, 1-4pm, George Douglas Lee, author of four children’s books, will be reading and signing his children’s books during Galveston’s Dickens on the Strand. Lee often says his “children’s book fan club members are under six and over sixty.” Whatever your age, if you’ve never heard George do a reading - don’t miss it. “Some of the six-year-olds that attend have grown up and are bringing their own kids to George’s events. It’s always a wonderful time.” G. Lee Gallery is located at 2217 Strand St., Downtown Galveston. Tickets are at eventbrite.com and it is free to attend.

The Arts

Sallie Anderson: Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist in November Sallie Anderson

NewGalveston Exhibitions at Galveston Arts Center Arts Center (GAC) has three exhibitions currently on

view. In the first-floor gallery, Buster Graybill presents sculptures made from objects associated with outdoor leisure and hobbies alongside paintings made from lawn-chair straps for the exhibition “Leisurely.” In the second-floor 1878 Gallery, the exhibition “Cultivate” includes intricate, small-scale sculptures by Jasmyne Graybill. In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Bill Willis presents new paintings based on images sourced from his everyday life as well as vintage cookbooks for the exhibition “Totally Okay.” These exhibitions will remain on view through November 18th.

Kaneem Smith Opens “Captive Sojourn and the Indefinite” with Renata Lucia, and Lina Dib

November 24th-January 13th The opening of the new exhibits featuring Kaneem Smith, Renata Lucia, and Lina Dib will host an Opening Reception November 24th, 6-9pm, with Artists’ Talks at 6:30pm. In the main gallery, Kaneem Smith will feature “Captive Sojourn and the Indefinite” on exhibit. Kaneem Smith’s exhibition explores the tumultuous relationship between trade, consumption, and commodities. Referencing Galveston’s location on a natural port in the Gulf of Mexico, and its historical and contemporary ties to the exchange of goods and labor, her installation contemplates the trade of natural materials, specifically cotton and coffee through textiles, such as burlap used for import/export purposes. As a mixed media artist and sculptor with a background in fibers, these concepts run a complex thread throughout her body of work. In the 1878 Gallery, Renata Lucia will feature “News vs. Nature (Gulf).” Renata Lucia’s paintings reflect on the widening social divides that unfold in the current news cycle. Her works incorporate national and local newspapers, including works created specifically for this exhibition that use pages from “The Galveston Daily News.” Acrylic paint and drawing media are applied to crumpled newspaper pages that are selected for composition and content, resulting in a textured topographical illusion. The intimacy of reading a physical newspaper is contrasted with a detached aerial view. Lucia began the “News vs. Nature” series considering the organized chaos of nature reigning supreme against the psychological toll of bad news. The series shifted and took on new importance in late 2017 as an epic battle began to rage in our perception and discussion of the news. Lucia’s works consider the questions “Is the news fake or, more likely, a last bastion of truth? Is nature sublime, or does it represent the most disturbing aspects of human nature?” In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Lina Dib will show “Threshold,” an interactive video installation that incorporates video of waves breaking on the Galveston shore just before sunset. The shore’s infinite poetic qualities, constant ebb and flow, and collision of bodies (land and sea) feature largely in Dib’s work. “Threshold” is a kind of homage to Thierry Kuntzel’s “The Waves” and to Andy Warhol’s “Sunset.” It is a tribute and meditation on the specificities of place and our relationship to natural systems. About GAC GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information, and map can be downloaded at galvestonartscenter.org. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am5pm, and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times.

Music An Evening With Little Jewford At Little Old Jewford Quarter Acoustic Cafe fans remember his perfor-

mances in Galveston at The Grand Opera House and the Old Quarter Acoustic Café. Well … heee’s baaaack! Little Jewford returns to Galveston’s Old Quarter Acoustic Café Saturday, November 10th for one night only, for a solo performance. Known for his entertaining one-of-a-kind show, Little Jewford blends his impressive musical talent with unique wit and humor. An internationally celebrated piano entertainer, Little Jewford plays everything from Rat Pack cool to sophisticated smooth and timeless favorites. In a lively, ever-changing combination of genres, the audience is treated to gems from the Great American Songbook, ragtime, original compositions, classical, and comedy along with Little Jewford’s own personal stories and musings scattered throughout. He describes his act as a Dean Martin and Victor Borge cocktail with a twist of the Marx Brothers. An original member of the band Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys, Little Jewford is recognized around the world as Kinky Friedman’s former keyboard player and sidekick. He has been called a “man of many voices” and a “first-class showman.” Music was a passion early on for Little Jewford, and at six years old he was entertaining audiences with his accordion, and adding piano to his routine before he was eight. The summer after turning seven he attended his first year of Echo Hill Ranch, a children’s summer camp, where he met and became friends with Kinky Friedman. On and off for more than 45 years, Little Jewford toured as Friedman’s keyboard, accordion, clavietta/melodica, kazoo player, support vocalist, and trusty sidekick in Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys, and later

as a duo entertaining audiences across Texas, the United States, Europe, and Australia. Little Jewford has shared the stage with notable entertainers such as Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver, performing at iconic venues worldwide including the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, BB King’s Blues Club in New York, The Troubadour in Los Angeles, The Jazz Cafe in London, and The Basement in Sydney, Australia. Not simply a performer, Little Jewford’s prolific talents also run the gamut from published songwriter to playwright to voice talent. His achievements include head-writer of an audio play created for CD (“Live from Uranus”), co-writer of an animated short film (“Discover Uranus”), creator-author of Little Jewford stage shows, creating and voicing all 23 characters for both Uranus projects, and recently he has turned his creative energies to writing a one-man musical play, set in a New Orleans French Quarter piano bar, “Will Smerky’s Guide to Nowhere.” So, in Galveston, under the “not to be missed” category, is “An Evening with Little Jewford,” November 10th at the Old Quarter Acoustic Café starting at 8:30pm. It’ll be a one-of-a-kind smorgasbord of entertainment!

Music Legends Hit the Stage at The Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe:

Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Ian Moore andOldKinky Friedman in Concert Quarter Acoustic Cafe is a music venue

PARTY CENTRAL

22 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com

that supports live, original music and is located at 413 20th St., in Downtown Galveston. For tickets and more info, go to oldquarteracousticcafe.com or find them on Facebook. Ramblin’ Jack Elliott November 29th (8:30pm) Nobody I know - and I mean nobody - has covered more ground and made more friends and sung more songs than Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He’s got a song and a friend for every mile behind him. He is one of the last true links to the great folk traditions of this country, with over 40 albums under his belt, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is considered one of the country’s legendary foundations of folk music. Long before every kid in America wanted to play guitar - before Elvis, Dylan, the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin - Ramblin’ Jack had picked it up and was passing it along. From Johnny Cash to Tom Waits, Beck to Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder to Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead to The Rolling Stones, they all pay homage to Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. In the tradition of roving troubadours, Jack has carried the seeds and pollens of story and song for decades from one place to another, from one generation to the next. They are timeless songs that outlast whatever current musical fashion strikes today’s fancy. There are no degrees of separation between Jack and the real thing. He is the guy who ran away from his Brooklyn home at fourteen to join the rodeo and learned his guitar from a cowboy. In 1950, he met Woody Guthrie, moved in with the Guthrie family and traveled with Woody to California and Florida - from the redwood forests to the Gulf Stream waters. Jack became so enthralled with the life and composer of “This Land Is Your Land,” “The Dust Bowl Ballads,” and a wealth of children’s songs that he completely absorbed the inflections and mannerisms, leading Guthrie to remark, “Jack sounds more like me than I do.” Along the way, he learned the blues first-hand from Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, the Reverend Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie Mcghee and Sonny Terry, Jesse Fuller and Champion Jack Dupree. He has recorded forty albums; wrote one of the first trucking songs, “Cup of Coffee,” recorded by Johnny Cash; championed the works of new singer-songwriters from Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson to Tim Hardin; became a founding member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue; and continued the life of the traveling troubadour influencing Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Tom Russell, The Grateful Dead, and countless others. Through it all - though agents, managers, wives, and recording companies have tried - Jack resisted being molded into a commercial commodity. He played his shows without a written setlist including any songs that did not ring with his gut feeling of what mattered to him. Ramblin’ Jack’s life of travels, performances, and recordings is a testament to the America of lore, a giant land of struggle, hard luck, and sometimes even of good fortune. Ramblin’ Jack takes us to places that spur us on to the romance and passion of life in the tunes and voices of real people. At 79 years old, Ramblin’ Jack is still on the road, still seeking those people, places, songs, and stories that are hand-crafted, wreaking of wood and canvas, cowhide and forged metal. You’ll find him in the sleek lines of a long haul semi-truck, in the rigging of an old sailing ship, in the smell of a fine leather saddle. Better yet, find him at Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe November 29th at 8:30pm or on one of his many albums at Ramblinjack.com.
