8th Annual Brewmasters Craft Beer Festival Rescheduled
Make a toast at the 8th annual BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival in sunny Galveston Island. Named Top 3 beer event by “USA Today” and revered by beer lovers across the region, BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is an immersive multi-day event that lets visitors tap into the world of craft beer on island time. Because of Hurricane Harvey, BrewMasters has been rescheduled to November 24th-26th. If you have already purchased your tickets to BrewMasters, your tickets will be good for the new dates. If you have not purchased your tickets, you can still purchase tickets online. With 400 craft beers, and rare “Taste it First” selections, the Free Beer Friday Bad A$$ Beard Contest, and more, this three-day event offers endless opportunities to learn from the best in the craft beer industry. Craft breweries continue to open at a brisk pace across Texas, and BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is the perfect place to sip, savor, and explore the real meaning behind the phrase “Drink Local.” Whether you are a craft-loyal drinker looking for inspiration, or just a newbie finding your way, BrewMasters is the ultimate event for experiencing the distinctive world of craft beer.
Clifton McDerby, Executive Director of Food & Vine Time Productions, Inc. explained, “Our vision has always been to make sure that loyalists and newcomers to this event experience the widest selection of craft beers available at any Texas festival, along with brew education and an introduction to new brews coming available for the first time at BrewMasters.” McDerby continued, “This year we are planning pop-up tastings. Guests will be pleasantly surprised by this addition.” But BrewMasters is even more - it is a place to meet the people who make the craft beer industry a force to be reckoned with. The festival is packed with beer, cheer, and plenty of foam-filled events happening each day.

A ThoughtProvoking Comedy
Island ETC (EastEnd Theatre Company) is pleased to present the national hit “Sex with Strangers,” the widely acclaimed comedy written by Laura Eason (“House of Cards”). ETC’s Artistic Director Kim Mytelka directs “Sex with Strangers.” Performances for this provocative comedy will be October 5th-October 21st. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances will start at 8pm. There will be one Sunday matinee October 15th. (Date changes for this production are due to building damage received from Hurricane Harvey.) “Sex with Strangers” combines humor, insight, and a modern version of the Faustian bargain – you can sell your soul but maintain the marketing rights! Olivia (Laurel Powell) is an attractive and under-appreciated mid-career writer. Ethan (Cameron Dunbar) is a hot young blogger
whose online journals about his “sexcapades” with strangers have become the buzz of the blogosphere. When these two become unexpectedly trapped in a secluded cabin during a winter storm, opposites attract. The chemistry between the two is undeniable. As their one-night stand turns into something more complicated and their literary futures become intimately intertwined, both writers confront who they are, what they really want, and how much they are willing to change to get it. The creative team includes Thomas D. Boone (Scenic Design), Lisa Miller (Light Design), Jennifer Daugherty (Sound Design), and Alex Brokmeyer (Stage Manager). All performances of “Sex with Strangers” will be at Island ETC, 2317 Mechanic St. in Galveston. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased online at islandetc.org. Group rates are available for groups of ten or more. For more info regarding group rates, this production, or Island ETC, contact the box office at (409)762-3556 or visit the website at islandetc.org. *Spoiler Alert – “Sex with Strangers” is not literally about sex with strangers. However, due to subject matter and language, ETC does not recommend this production for children.
Enjoy events such as Nach-Yo Ordinary Tequila Tasting, Friday Night Pub Crawl, “Taste It First” selections of first time to market beer releases, Texas Brewery Tour, Brew HaHa Grand Tasting, and Brew-B-Que. Make it a destination weekend. Set in Galveston’s tropical Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center, with special events at various venues around the island, BrewMasters breaks out the barrels and serves up foam-filled perfection all weekend long.
Tickets range from $25-$85. For more info on the festivities go to brewmastersbeerfest.com. The 8th annual BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is sponsored by: Ben E. Returning to The Grand: The Beach Boys!
October 15th, 3pm and 7pm, The Grand 1894 Opera House presents The Beach Boys in an amazing display of “Good Vibrations.” Conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has a torrent of hit singles and has sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. Through the music of The Beach Boys, fans found the key to unfading youth: “The beach isn’t just a place where the surf comes to play—it’s where life is renewed and made whole again.” This performance is sponsored in part by Frost Bank and The Tremont House. Single tickets are now available. Contact The Grand’s box office at (409)765-1894, (800)8211894, or online at thegrand.com. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 Postoffice St. in Galveston’s historic Downtown Cultural Arts District, and is recognized as “The Official Opera House of the State of Texas.”

Halloween and Everything in Between By Lauren Elizabeth Ware Galveston has become a central point for all things scary. With haunted backstories circling The Hotel Galvez, Bishop’s Palace, and the Menard House, an array of activities are spread all across the island, ready to spook anyone who comes about. Ghosts flourish here, and during the entire month, there will be Ghost Tours on The Strand every Sunday-Saturday. A couple of things I am personally looking forward to are the Haunted Zombie Tour, the Nosferatu Symphony, and “The Addams Family” Movie Night. The Haunted Zombie Tour will be held at Seawolf Park on the USS Cavalla Submarine 6:30-9:30pm on Saturday, October 28th. Who will be brave enough to wander through a zombie infested submarine? For this event, it will be $6 per vehicle and $5 for children 5 and older. What is just as creepy as zombies, comes out at night, and has an unquenchable thirst for blood? That’s right, vampires! If you’re a horror movie buff like me, you’ll definitely want to check out the silent film, accompanied by Rob Landes on the organ, “Nosferatu” at The Grand Opera House, Friday, October 27th at 8pm. Ticket prices for this event range from $18-$20. And finally, “The Addams Family” Movie Night! Who doesn’t like little Wednesday and Pugsley? This free event is family friendly, of course, and will be held Saturday, October 7th at 7pm at Saengerfest Park. And now, it’s high tide, there’s a faint laugh
Thrills and Chills:
Halloween Fun in Galveston
The season for thrills and chills is quickly approaching and Galveston Island’s ghostly history makes it one of the top destinations in the country for “haunted” travel. From a 106-year-old “haunted” hotel to Galveston’s storied harbor, cemeteries, and Victorian mansions, this October the island will be bustling with visitors seeking to be spooked by numerous ghost stories that stem from the country’s deadliest natural disaster and other tragedies. Galveston has many sites that are considered haunted, including an 1867 building that served as a morgue after the 1900 Storm – still the deadliest storm in U.S. history having killed an estimated 8,000 Galveston residents. The building now houses Haunted Mayfield Manor – a year-round haunted house attraction in Downtown Galveston. The haunted house embraces the spooky history of the building’s past while providing guests with a psychologically thrilling experience. Also embracing its reported haunting is the island’s 106-year-old Hotel Galvez, which has been featured on the Travel Channel’s “Ghost Stories” and on the Discovery Channel’s “Ghost Lab” for its paranormal significance. The hotel, which offers special ghost tours during October, is said to be haunted by a “Ghost Bride” who reportedly has been seen in room 501 and in the hotel’s west turret. Legend has it that the bride hung herself in the west turret during the mid-1900’s after hearing reports that her fiancé had died at sea. Tragically, her fiancé eventually returned to the hotel looking forward to a marriage that would never be. The Galveston Historical Foundation, which manages many of the island’s well-preserved historical sites and Victorian mansions, also offers ghost tours throughout October. Many of the island’s historic places have ghost stories attached to them as Galveston has been home to epidemics of disease, war, fires, storms, and many merciless pirates, including the infamous Jean Laffite whose lavish and lawless den of thieves was the island’s first European settlement. “Many, many people have lived and died by these waters, and perhaps some of the dead still reside here,” said Dwayne Jones, executive
and a distant scream coming from somewhere deep within the shadows. Your eyes cannot seem to focus, but something is there. Suddenly, they emerge! Crowds of kids dressed as witches, ghosts, ghouls, and black cats, hunting for the next great candy bar! On Saturday, October 28th 1-4pm, Saengerfest Park is hosting the 7th annual Mini Monster Bash for all the little ones. There will be Trick or Treat stops at local business, games, arts and crafts, face painting, and costume contests for age groups up to 11 years old. Spruce your little tikes up in the creepiest or most creative costumes and see what prizes will be passed out. For many people, including me, Halloween is a favorite holiday. But why is that? Is it the candy? Is it the allure of taking on another identity? Is it the contests and the festivals and supernatural sightings and stories? I believe it to be all of the above. People are in love with the idea of the unknown, and I believe the month of October embodies that. We love decorating; we love the eerie music; we love gathering with our friends and laughing at people when a masked figure scares them. And no matter how old we get, we will always love candy. So bring yourselves, your friends, your little ones, and enjoy all that Galveston has to offer this month. For more info on me, go to facebook.com/ BlueFlowerProse. director of the Galveston Historical Foundation. “We invite our guests to listen to the stories and decide for themselves. But you don’t have to believe in ghosts to know that the dead are a presence on this island.” Galveston is also home to the nationally recognized paranormal expert Dash Beardsley, who offers ghost tours in the island’s cemeteries, downtown district, and other parts of the island year round. Visit ghosttoursofgalvestonisland.com for information on Dash Beardsley tours.

Friday, October 13th (6-8pm) - “Tattooed on My Soul” edited by Stephen Sloan Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for Stephen Sloan, the editor of “Tattooed on My Soul: Texas Veterans Remember World War II.” For more than forty years, Baylor University has gathered the flesh-and-blood memories of the World War II generation in the state of Texas. This collection, edited by Stephen Sloan, Lois M. Myers, and Michelle Holland, brings together seventeen of the most compelling narratives from the university’s collection of more than five thousand interviews. These recollections provide an authentic and powerful mosaic of the critical World War II years in Texas and give intimate glimpses into the lives of those who fought. With a diverse cross-section of Texas’ population and a wide range of wartime assignments, this collection spans land, sea and air, in the Pacific and in Europe, to provide an authentic history of the time. These stories, rich with detail, make a global war personal. “Tattooed on My Soul” adds layers of complexity between World War II and the individuals who served: how the war interrupted their lives, taught them certain skills, and, in some cases, haunted them. Stephen M. Sloan is the director of the Institute for Oral History and associate professor of history at Baylor University. Saturday, October 14th (3-5pm) - “Long Fall From Heaven” by George Wier and Milton T. Burton Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for George Wier featuring his mystery novel, “Long Fall from Heaven,” co-written by Milton T. Burton. Cueball Boland and Micah Lanscomb, both excops with troubled pasts, stumble into the path of a serial killer.

The murderer leads them into the dark history of Galveston when the island was still Texas’ Sin City. The killer has roots sunk deep into that history, but the authorities and the old Galveston families don’t want these crimes solved. Now, the hazy memories of another serial killer, who stalked the city back during World War II, are resurfacing. In the 1990’s George Wier befriended the older novelist Milton T. Burton and the two became close friends. In 1998, Burton, worried about his health, told Wier this story and asked him to be his collaborator and principal writer. The two friends talked back and forth, and Wier wrote the novel. George Wier is the author of the Bill Travis Mystery Series. He plays classical violin and country fiddle, dabbles in art and photography. This is his first trade-published novel. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Sallie. Milton T. Burton (1947-2011) authored four crime novels published by Minotaur/Thomas Dunne. Like Wier, Burton was a lifelong Texan who breathed the Texas lingo. Burton had been variously a cattleman, a political consultant, and a college history teacher. He died in December 2011. Thursday, October 19th (6-8pm) - “The Last to See Me” by Mylene Dressler Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for Mylene Dressler featuring her novel, “The Last to See Me.” Dressler is a former Galveston resident and author of “The Deadwood Beetle” and “The Medusa.” For readers of Lauren Oliver and Alice Sebold, “The Last to See Me” is a sophisticated, literary ghost story that reminds us the past is never, ever forgotten. In a small logging town in northern California, young Emma Rose Finnis was born and died. Now, no one remembers her hardworking life and her grand dreams, but she remembers. She remembers everything. Emma Rose is still here, one hundred years after her death, and she doesn’t plan on leaving. But when a determined hunter arrives with instructions to “clean” Emma Rose out of her haunt, the stately Lambry mansion, death suddenly isn’t the worst fate imaginable. Emma Rose refuses to be hounded from the only place she’s ever found peace, even if it means waging a war on the living and the dead. Lyrical and haunting, this spellbinding American ghost story alternates between Emma Rose’s life and afterlife as the past and present become entwined in a compelling tale of loss, love, and tenacity over a century in the making.

The Arts Galveston Arts Center:
A History of Art, Service & Creativity By Terry Card
Every six weeks, in balmy weather on Saturday evenings, throngs of Galvestonians, Houstonians, and visitors from all over Texas and the U.S. amble from art gallery to art gallery and shop to shop where art and art décor are sold. The focus of these evening ArtWalk events is Postoffice St., but includes many galleries, shops, and boutiques on the Strand, Kempner, Moody, Mitchell, and Tremont St., and many other streets in various locations tied to Galveston’s burgeoning art district. People from all walks of life, view the art while enjoying refreshments and food provided by the galleries, shops, and boutiques. For Galvestonians, it is a night where one can barely walk 100 yards without being hailed by friends and acquaintances.
18 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com
Often this leads to sitting and listening to music while having a drink, with everybody gathering around any available tables, enjoying good conversation, before heading off to see more of the offerings in many different mediums created by the multi-talented artists of Galveston and the surrounding area. It is to bring together the artists from more than eight surrounding counties and the people who live within those counties, that the Galveston Art Center (GAC) organizes and sponsors this wonderful and engaging Saturday night events known as ArtWalk. Galvestonians all look forward to, and ensure that ArtWalk is marked on their calendars. It is one of the dominant questions in Galveston, “Are you guys going to ArtWalk Saturday night?” Somehow, all of Texas must have heard of ArtWalk in Galveston, because it is very common to become engaged in conversation with Texans from all over. Galveston, a city replete with history and historical buildings, has a very interesting history tied to The Galveston Arts Center. In 1967, a year before the center for contemporary art was formed, the Trueheart Adriance Building 1882, designed
by Nicholas Clayton, and the First National Bank Building were purchased and renovated for use by the Center through the generosity of the Moody Foundation, The Kempner Fund, The Houston Endowment, and the Jr. League of Galveston. Today, the Galveston Arts Center is supported through Galveston hotel/ motel taxes, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Texas Commission on the Arts, membership fees, and other donations. From 1971-1986 The Galveston Arts Center, under the umbrella of the Galveston County Cultural Arts Council Inc. offered exhibitions, art education, and public festivals. In 1986, The Galveston Arts Center became a separate non-profit organization. On an annual basis, more than 50,000 visitors are introduced to contemporary visual art of many
different mediums used by the local or guest artists through exhibitions and educational programs provided by The Galveston Arts Center, which is conveniently located for Galvestonians and visitors alike at 2127 Strand. In addition, on opening nights, the exhibiting artists are invited to speak to visitors to the Center about their work during ArtWalks. Entry is free. The Galveston Arts Center has three galleries: one large gallery on the main floor off The Strand and two smaller galleries upstairs. In addition, there is also a museum store on the main floor that provides a showcase for fine craft artists. The Center introduces new artists from Galveston County and the surrounding regions, many of whom work in a broad expanse of varied media in producing their wide ranging art exhibits. Eighty-five percent of the visitors to the Center are walk-ins and represent a mix of locals and visitors who are enjoying a day on the Strand, shopping, eating, and drinking, either as a reprieve from the beaches or simply those who are interested in learning what contemporary art is all about. There are many programs offered by The Galveston Arts Center. The Ceramics Studio is a new program for adults and teens. They learn hand-building techniques in pottery, figurative sculpting, and glazing using earthenware clay as the medium. In blocks of four weeks following each ArtWalk, program participants have their creations kiln fired at least once per block. All materials and supplies are provided, and all levels of experience, or inexperience, as the case may be, are welcomed and indeed encouraged by the Curator Dennis Nance and his friendly staff at the Center. Yoga in the Gallery is a weekly Wednesday class for all levels and is open to the public. Exhibitions on View through November 19th at Galveston Galveston Arts Center Arts Center (GAC) presents
three exhibitions by Texas-based artists in partnership with the 2017 Texas Biennial opening Saturday, October 14th, 6-9pm with artist talks beginning at 6:30pm. In the 1st floor gallery, Dallas-based artist Giovanni Valderas incorporates Spanish idioms into piñata forms in an attempt to decipher the complex relationships between the US and Latin America for the exhibition “Tradecraft.” In the 1878 Gallery, Regina Agu reconsiders the landscape through photography, environmental research, and source texts for the exhibition “Sea Change.” In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Christie Blizard presents “Wanting not to Want,” an installation of video and text paintings used in her ongoing appearances in the audiences of popular morning television broadcasts. These exhibitions will remain on view through November 19th. For the exhibition “Tradecraft,” Giovanni Valderas pulls from his culture, history, and origins to produce three-dimensional mixed-media works that address the tattered relationships with his Guatemalan, Mexican, and American ancestry. This new work addresses issues with gentrification in Spanish speaking communities, and incorporates frayed elements of the piñata. Through the use of idioms incorporated into piñata forms, Valderas transforms these objects associated with celebration to highlight an alternate view of the decay of traditional structures. Regina Agu explores representations of the physical and historical landscape in her exhibition “Sea Change.” Agu’s work explores narratives related to language, history, and representation, and their intersections in contemporary ideas around landscape and communities of color. Central to the exhibition is an 80-foot panoramic photograph printed on billboard vinyl documenting a group of prototype sand dunes constructed from the sargassum that regularly
Events
washes up on Galveston’s shores. Using landscape photography, environmental research, and source texts, including Jean Rhys’ 1966 feminist novel “Wide Sargasso Sea,” “Sea Change” is a speculative commentary on climate change, the tourism industry, environmental justice, and interrelated economies. Christie Blizard presents work from her ongoing project in which the artist holds up text paintings on The Today Show and Good Morning America for the exhibition “Wanting not to Want.” Through Blizard’s disruptions of the broadcast, she tests the boundaries of free speech in America. Since 2014, Blizard has made approximately 30 appearances in the audiences of broadcasts of these popular morning television programs. The project has gained national attention through articles in “Hyperallergic” and “ArtNews,” and was nominated for an Art Matters award. For her exhibition, “Wanting not to Want,” Blizard presents a new series of text paintings, video projections and still images taken from appearances during the summer of 2017. During the opening reception, Blizard will perform as Matt Lauer, host of The Today Show. GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information, and map can be downloaded at galvestonartscenter.org. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times.

Music Tony Sassi:
Bassist and Composer Exposed Written and Photographed by Sharis Roe DeJaynes
It’s October again, and it reminded me of a song Tony Sassi and I wrote and released last October called “October Blue.” Known locally for being the Trivia Host at Stuttgarden Tavern on the Strand and Stuttgarden Texas City, many don’t know about Tony Sassi’s music background. Though I personally know much of his story, I wanted to publicly expose his music, so I sat him down for a formal interview over lunch and a glass of wine at Riondo’s Ristorante. Island Guide: Who are you, and where have you been all my life? Sassi: I was born in South Jersey in a town called Penns Grove. I went to high school there, then went to college at Glassboro State College, which is also in South Jersey. I studied Music Education with a little bit of Computer Science. I set out to be an Orchestra Director. I played upright/string bass back then. I was raised with a strong work ethic; I like to finish what I start, and I’m not afraid of hard work. I worked on a farm, after all. I picked up the electric bass as a freshman in high school, then during senior year picked up the trumpet and played trumpet in the marching band. I also played bass in the pit band in high school musicals. I played electric and string bass through college, also in theater, community orchestra, and a variety band in New Jersey called Prestige for four years. Shortly after graduating college and getting married, I moved to Houston and began teaching music. At that same time, I joined a band and was playing five nights per week. After four years of teaching in school districts, I began a career in Educational Technology. I became a Technology Director and did that until retirement. Island Guide: Is your family musically inclined? Sassi: My father played accordion, but I didn’t like it much. So, I learned to play bass, and my brother played guitar. During high school, we had a band called Revelation. My mother played the piano, and that’s really how I started, playing piano around five years old. My first real bass was a Sears Silvertone. Out of my three brothers and two sisters, my brother Paul and I are the only ones who play. Island Guide: When did you start composing music and tell us about that process? Sassi: I started composing in college. Then about four years ago someone gave me some lyrics to put music to. That’s what I enjoy. With my formal background in music, my strategy is to compose music that fits the lyrics versus the other way around. Then came you, Sharis, and our collaboration on our first single “For the Love of Galveston” in 2015, and then the “Evolution of Love” album released this past April. To date, you’ve given me 12 songs that you wrote lyrics to, and I built the compositions around the feel of each song. I always want the music to serve the words properly. I choose the genre by the feel of the lyrics. The biggest challenge for me in composing is the first part; feeling the intent, urge, and ideas. Sometimes they come quickly; sometimes they don’t. I don’t force it. I’ll pick it up, put it down, listen to different music, do something completely different than composing, and usually that helps. I have the advantage that the lyrics are always there, and I can go back to them. I leave the lyrics up to the lyricists.
Island Guide: What is your most recent composition? Sassi: “Tell Me You Remember,” my third single with you, Sharis, released just last month. Once again, you gave me the lyrics and intention for the song, and I spun it around in my head and in notation until the music just came together. Though the concept of the song is on the sad side, I wanted to brighten it up a bit to bring out the hope in it. Hence, the Jazz Fusion style. It worked well. Island Guide: Who are your compositions influenced by? Sassi: The Beatles, especially McCartney with the melodic bass lines and jazz bassists Charles Mingus and Victor Wooten. Also, the raw energy and songs of The Rolling Stones. I can go many different directions, from classical to rock. I use what fits. As well, I’m always listening and watching other musicians, both old and new. I respect all musicians and look for things that I personally could improve on. I want everyone to succeed. Island Guide: Tell us about your music education. Sassi: Music education involves reading music, music theory, music history, and learning and playing every instrument you would typically see in a high school band or orchestra. I enjoy playing multiple instruments, even if I never play live with them. For example, in my studio I have guitars, basses, a steel guitar, a synthesizer, and a nice electric grand piano. I use all of them at different times while composing. Understanding music theory helps in many ways, and when you’re performing live as well. Such as you’ll know what’s coming next, simply based on theory. Learning to play by ear is fine, but the best way to learn is to read the music. The actual notation, not tabs. Music scores tell you more than just the notes, and once you know what you’re looking at, you’ll feel the music jump out at you. Don’t get me wrong, anyone can use creative license and do what they want with music, but there are actually age-old reasons behind some things, which I continue to employ. It’s just a school of thought, more simply put. Analyze music so you can see how it’s made. Learn the rules, learn the theory, and then and only then, break those rules and employ creative license. That’s what makes music interesting. Island Guide: Do you play 4, 5, or 6 string basses? Sassi: Yes! Though I do own a Fender and a Rickenbacker four string bass, I prefer six string basses, my Carvins and Ibanez, for example. Six strings allow the extra range and the ability to get to

a lot of notes without moving positions. It’s just faster. I won’t apologize for being more efficient! I use different basses at different times when performing. It’s a personal mood thing really. Island Guide: Tell us about the bands you have performed with. Sassi: Currently, I play bass and sing lead vocal with the Time in a Bottle band, a four-piece classic rock and oldies band. I’ve been with them for seven years. I also play bass in the Moonglow Orchestra, which is a sevenpiece band that plays a lot of swing music and old standards. Moonglow typically plays at the Chandelier Ballroom, Junior League, and Petroleum Club in Houston. I’ve been with Moonglow for almost 17 years, and did a CD with them. Jazz Ambassadors is a jazz trio I play in from time to time. I also occasionally play in praise bands in Texas City and right here in Galveston at First Baptist Church on 23rd St. I was also with local Noise Poets band for three years and recorded a CD with them. I played bass and sang background vocals on “Don’t Mess with the Sound!” which is an album of originals written and composed by George Douglas Lee. Apart from playing in many other bands throughout the years, I had the honor to play bass in the Houston Texans’ Bull Pen Pep Band their first three seasons. Good times. Island Guide: Where can we find recordings of your music? Sassi: You can purchase my music on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and other like digital channels; just search for Tony Sassi. You can also purchase a signed copy of the “Evolution of Love” album, as well as a signed copy of the “For the Love of Galveston” single by reaching out to me directly. Island Guide: What is your biggest pet peeve? Sassi: Equipment malfunctions and bands/musicians with shoddy equipment, especially while playing live. It’s not about having expensive equipment. It’s about being professional and having stuff that works. Be ready, and be prepared for the unexpected. I pride myself in that. Island Guide: What else do you do musically? Sassi: I transcribe from time to time. I can take music from other musicians that don’t know how to write it and transcribe that into music score for publishing, copyrighting, or otherwise. Island Guide: When and where can we see you play next? Sassi: You can enjoy Time in a Bottle band on October 14th at Noah’s Ark in Bacliff and Moonglow Orchestra at Lodge 88 in Houston on October 21st. Come out and see us! Island Guide: On another note, tell us more about your hosting Trivia. Sassi: I’m always eager to have a microphone in front of me, and it was an easy transition. I was asked by Stuttgarden two years ago, and as of this interview, I’ve hosted it over 100 times. I’m always performing in one way or another. Join me for Trivia on Tuesday nights at Stuttgarden on the Strand in Galveston for games at 8pm and 9:30pm. Also join me for Trivia on Wednesdays at Stuttgarden Texas City for games at 8pm and 9pm. Recently started is OpinioNation, a Family Feud style game on Sundays at Stuttgarden on the Strand at 7pm and 8pm. Great fun, great food, and great prizes! Tony Sassi is a wonderful music collaborator and mentor, and it has been a pleasure to work with him. He’s a true professional.
