Things To Do
Island Oktoberfest: Family, Food & Brews
On October 21st-22nd downtown Galveston comes alive for the 35th Annual Island Oktoberfest! Island Oktoberfest is a family friendly event and is recognized as Galveston Island’s premier fall event. Island Oktoberfest, hosted by First Evangelical Lutheran Church and co-sponsored by Del Papa Distributing Company, will open Friday evening with themed-Biergarten venues featuring a variety of both German and domestic brews and a variety of German-style wines from nearby Haak Vineyards. Festival goers will enjoy authentic German food and libations, German pastries, a shopping venue for quality hand-crafted gift items in The Lyceum, an exciting live auction and raffle, Cake Wheel, fun, a variety of children’s activities, and so much more. The historic and beautifully renovated circa 1860 Lyceum will again be open from 5-9pm Friday evening and from 11am-7pm on Saturday with vendors showcasing exceptional handcrafted arts, crafts, and gift items for those festival goers eager to get a head start on holiday shopping. Because Oktoberfest continues to be one of the vendors’ most enjoyable and popular venues, regular attendees can look forward to shopping with their longtime special vendors, each featuring Christmas and other special gift items. Shoppers always look forward to knowing that their favorite vendors have returned to showcase their best products.
The Fun
This fun, family festival weekend will feature continuous live entertainment on two stages, authentic German food and libations, Cake Wheel, fine arts, crafts and gifts; an exciting auction, exciting family and children’s activities and much more. Oktoberfest will be held on the grounds of and streets adjacent to First Lutheran Church, 24th and Winnie in historic downtown Galveston. Saturday at 6pm on the Family Stage, the hugely-popular annual Chicken Dance contest will be featured. Costumes are encouraged. Volunteers from the crowd and event staff will select semi-finalists from each of the two categories. The audience will judge the semifinalists. The winner from each category will be determined by the length/volume of applause from the audience. On Saturday, a variety of fun games and activities will be available in the special Children’s activities area including a pony carrousel, moon walk, rock climbing wall, petting zoo, water balloon toss, face painting, and more.
The Food & Beer
There will also be homemade desserts to
satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. You won’t want to miss the sweets booths for a treat to enjoy at the festival or maybe to take home with you. There will be tempting arrays of homemade cakes, pies, cookies, candies, divinity, fudge, popcorn balls, caramel apples, cupcakes, homemade jellies and jams, and much more! The Island Oktoberfest German Dinner consists of Knackwurst and Bratwurst Sausages, sweet red German cabbage, German hot potato salad, and sauerkraut. Festival goers may select a complete Wurst dinner, a dinner of sides only, or ala carte dishes as they choose. The side dishes are all made from congregation members’ recipes handed down generation to generation. The ever popular sweet booths, apple cake, and strudel stands provide plenty of tempting opportunities to enhance one’s German Wurst dinner with a great homemade dessert. Desserts and strudels are ala carte. Cost is $15 for the complete dinner and $4 for sides. A German dinner is available Friday night from 5pm until they run out, and Saturday from 11am until they are gone. Island Oktoberfest is co-sponsored by Del Papa Distributing Company and will have themed-Bier Garten venues featuring a variety of both German and domestic brews as well as a variety of German-style wines from nearby Haak Vineyards. It all begins with the opening Beer Tapping event with Die Tubameisters at 5pm on Friday. Featured beers include Paulaner Hefeweisen, Paulaner Oktoberfestbier, Hofbrau Oktoberfest, Beck’s Oktoberfest, Kraftig, Saint Arnold Oktoberfest, Karbachtoberfest, Ziegenbock, and more.
The Music
35 Years of entertainment galore is celebrated at Island Oktoberfest. Music will be a fun-filled event, guaranteed to get your feet moving and the good times rolling. Auf Gehts Back this year on the Music Stage Saturday night, Randy Adams and Auf Geht’s will perform. Randy and gang specialize in the music of the Alps – Bavaria, Tirol, Rheinland, Germany, “and Brazoria County Texas” (yee-haw!) featuring lots of yodeling (Alpine and Western), alpenhorn, musical handsaw, dazzling accordion, and trumpet instrumentals. Valina Polka and Das Ist Lustig Das Ist Lustig headlines the Family Stage again this year and is a crowd favorite, especially when Valina starts her antics. Das Ist Lustig means “that’s fun,” and the band is a fan favorite for all ages. Das Ist Lustig offers variety that no other band does with their audiences. Make sure to ask them for the Bench Dance or to go Cuckoo with you. They even have their own twist on the traditional Schnitzelbank! Chris Rybak New this year to the Music Stage during the day on Saturday from Austin will be Chris Rybak and his band. Like a wagon master leading a wagon train, the Accordion Cowboy, with a crack of his whip, leads you through many colorful images of the grand state of Texas, featuring the German and Czech heritages. From Polkas to Two Steps, dance and listen to the mighty heartbeat of Texas. Along the way, you will be treated to honky-tonk piano, romantic waltzes, and boot stomping accordion and fiddle medleys. Midlife Crisis Local professionals, “Midlife Crisis” will play to a loyal local following and a growing new fan base. For 15 years now, this band of local doctors, attorneys, and professionals has been entertaining on Galveston’s Strand and at galas and charitable events. A tremendous hit and crowd favorite since 2011, the band returns this year to Island Oktoberfest, and will be featured on Friday night 7-11pm. Kevin Anthony For Galveston-based musician, Kevin Anthony, his musical life experience took him from Galveston up to Houston, to New York City in 1993 and then jetted him to Minneapolis and back to the island where he has made
his home since 2005. He’s been performing his unique sound, which he calls “Gulf Coast,” throughout Texas and Louisiana with his band called G-Town, as well as trips to the mid-west to Wisconsin and Minnesota where he performs with his country/Cajun band, The Twin City Playboys. Anthony’s smooth voice comes through brilliantly – it’s soulful, warm, and lovely. The TubaMeisters No instrument is more identified with German and Czech music than the Tuba. The TubaMeisters, a Tuba/Euphonium quartet, go far beyond the oompah tradition, by presenting a rich and varied entertainment. All the old standards are here with other music you’ll enjoy. There’s also Austrian, Czech, Slovenian, Spanish, and Mexican, and even a few Country-Western and Rock tunes with vocals in five languages. Back again by popular demand, the crowd pleasing part of their act is their strolling performances, interacting with the crowd up close and personal. TubaMeisters will perform on the Family Stage on Friday and can be found strolling through the crowds periodically having fun with the guests. Fanfare - The Lutheran Music Academy Children’s Choir Fanfare returns this year bigger and better than ever. In its sixth year, the Lutheran Music Academy has grown to more than 70 students learning music and art in an after school program designed to introduce the participants to fine music theory and performance. See Fanfare on Saturday afternoon. Deer Park Folk Dance Troupe Returning this year to the Family stage is the Deer Park Folk Dance Troupe. This respected group of young men and women study German at Deer Park High School and are in their 10th year of existence. Their enjoyment of the German culture, the fellowship they have found with each other, and their dedication to practice has made them successful in Regional and State German competitions. They will be performing on Saturday. Rathkamp German Folk Dancers The Rathkamp German Folk Dancers (Die Rathkamp Deutsche Volkstanzgruppe) is a family-oriented group established in 1959 by Monroe and Betty Rathkamp. The group strives to preserve and perpetuate German and Germanic folk dances, customs and culture, and to cultivate a public appreciation of these by dancing in authentic costume accompanied by authentic music. The repertoire includes dances from all over Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: beautiful and graceful Ländlers with their many figures, Schuhplattlers (foot slapping dances) from Bavaria and Austria, guild (occupational) dances such as Mühlradl (Millwheel) which represents the grinding of grain, and Die Hammerschmiedgesell’n (blacksmith journeymen), wedding dances, and many other folk dances. See them Saturday on the Family Stage. Gemischter Chor Harmonie The New Braunfels Gemischter Chor Harmonie is an ethnic choir that enjoys singing and having fun and fellowship (Gemütlichkeit) while preserving the German language and
traditions. Some are fluent in German, while others are using the choir to help them learn the language. Most of all they share a love of singing in German. See them on Saturday at 3:15pm and 6:45pm on the Family Stage. Klaus and Becky, The Fragstein Duo Klaus and Becky, The Fragstein Duo, join Oktoberfest this year bringing their unique blend of German Music, Country, 50’s Rock & Roll, and music from around the world to the stages. Klaus’ music career began at the age of six in Germany when he sang with the Hannover Boys Choir and also with the Vienna Boys Choir. Becky is first generation German. She was born in Denver, Colorado. Becky began her musical career when her “Oma” bought her an accordion at the age of eight. Klaus and Becky now live in Lumberton, Texas. Klaus sings in 12 different languages. Come on out and see Klaus and Becky where you can dance along, “Schunckel” along, and sing along with their “musik.” They will be performing on the Family Stage on Saturday.

Island Treasure Hunts: A Fun Time for All Ages By Terry Card Texans who live close to the heady atmosphere of space technology at NASA and Johnson Space Center will appreciate the high tech application of Island Treasure Hunts to the age old scavenger hunt. Just like soaring off into space, participants in this unique approach to searching out the sights, history, architecture, and natural beauty of Galveston will appreciate the flexibility available when they sign up with Island Treasure Hunts for one of three existing hunts. How flexible is the scheduling? Well, for example, let’s say that you and your friends or family have just finished a wonderful meal at any one of Galveston’s great restaurants, the evening is cooling and you are looking for something to do. You’ve not booked anything, so you’re at a bit of a loss. Then someone is surfing the net on a smart phone and finds islandtreasurehunts.com. Since your group consists of four people, the maximum number per phone, the next steps are straightforward. Or, if you are alone, it is equally applicable and equally fun and simple. After deciding which of the three hunts you want to play, you can pay for the hunt on your phone and start immediately. If you are with friends and decide that you want to stop in at a bar for a while and get into dancing, you can do that and then finish the hunt later that night or the next day, or go on a cruise with your family and finish when you return to port. Now that is flexibility! All at the same price! And you can pick up where you left off. There is no time limit, and the purchase of the hunt is yours until it is completed. The three hunts available on this interactive mobile tour are the Scavenger Hunt on the Strand ($14.95), the Hysterical Historical Hunt ($19.95), or the Seawall Stroll ($14.95). During each of the challenging and fun mobile guided tours, you will solve multiple choice riddles and challenges (hints available) that lead you step-by-step from one interesting location to the next. You can take selfies with heroic and historical figures, take your time and soak in the sights, or race against your friends. The choice is yours. Each time you correctly answer one of the multiple choice questions you will be awarded points based on the time to solve the puzzle and the answers you provide. These points will be tallied automatically, and you can win up to 100 Treasure Coins on each of the tours which can be used for special prizes and vouchers from local establishments. These are essentially walking tours, but many walk or bike, and on the Strand Hunt and the Hysterical Historical Hunt, streetapproved golf carts may also be used. The Scavenger Hunt on the Strand interactively guides participants on a 1.2 mile round trip through the Strand, Tremont House, Pier 21, Storm Survivors, and other great locations. It begins at Saengerfest Park at the corner of The Strand and 23rd St. There are 25 challenge stops and two selfie stops, as well as one bonus. The Hysterical Historical Hunt is a 3.1 mile round trip and visits the Postoffice Arts District, historical mansions, Texas Heroes Monument, Storm Survivors, The Strand, and more, again starting from Saengerfest Park. There are 34 challenge stops, two selfie stops, and one bonus.
The Seawall Stroll is a 1.1 mile round trip starting at Seawall Blvd. and 23rd St. and visits the Hotel Galvez & Spa, Pleasure Pier, the Seawall, beach hot spots, and much more. In this hunt there are 28 challenge stops, two selfie stops, and one bonus. Island Treasure Hunt was co-founded by David Willingham, his 17 year old daughter Hannah, and his fiancée Delores. It was based on a similar enterprise they experienced while on holiday in Tampa, Florida. It struck them that Galveston needed something high tech like this to complement all the other entertainment available on the island, but it had to be at a reasonable price. David was born in Downey (L.A. County), California and being close to Disneyland, he always had an interest in the entertainment industry. His father was in the oil industry, and when David was about seven years old, his father moved to the Midland/Odessa area, which is where he grew up. During his college years in Dallas, he studied Communications, majoring in Radio and TV production. After graduating, he became an outdoor education specialist and was in charge of setting up programs at youth camps. After this, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, becoming a Petroleum Land Manager on contract to oil and gas companies, a position he still holds. But his passion has always been getting people outdoors and having fun. Island Treasure Hunt dovetails with that passion, and it fits exactly with his view of life and business. So, he and his co-founding partners decided to develop a website that would provide fun, challenges, and information while guiding Galveston visitors and locals through the sights and sounds of Galveston. David feels strongly that this type of entertaining challenge - with its low pressure in which you can set your own pace and do with others or by yourself - is educational, inspires team building skills, and is not only wonderfully entertaining for the participants, but is a very good addition to the tourism industry in Galveston. With the website completed, they opened for business on Memorial Weekend in 2016. After only three months, they are receiving thousand of hits on their website and have already achieved break-even status in spite of heavy technical development costs. Their clientele have so far been evenly split between locals and visitors. With the success already generated, they are in talks with local businesses and planning to expand with at least one or two more hunts within the next year. Again - all you need is your smart phone. Select your hunts, pay by phone - or however you wish - and you can start anytime you like, take as much time as you want, end when you want, and pay a very reasonable price for great and educational fun! It really is simply fun. For more info call (844)752-9386 or go to islandtreasurehunts.com.

Riding the Rails to Historic Galveston is a unique way to visit three of Galveston’s finest museums: The Bryan Museum, the Galveston Railroad Museum, and Moody Mansion. Visit all three of these heritage museums to learn about the art and history of the American Southwest, Galveston’s railroad, and the financier who made it happen. The name “Riding the Rails” was chosen for this promotional campaign because during the late 1800’s, cities and towns throughout Texas were linked to Galveston by a ribbon of steel and steam locomotives. Operating from 1873 to 1965, the rail line connected small towns and transported passengers, cattle, lumber, grain, and cotton to and from Galveston. hard-to-find imported items too which are great for gift giving. Live entertainment is provided by Alex Kalos. The Dancing Thalassapoulia, Greek dancers under the direction of Homer Rigas, will perform regularly throughout each day. Exciting children’s activities are also available. Father Stelios Sitaras, the parish priest, will conduct educational tours of the church on Saturday 11am-6pm and Sunday beginning at 12 noon. The public is invited to attend Divine Liturgy at 9am. The Service is approximately one hour in length. Event admission is $3 per person. Ala carte food and drink items are priced individually. A complete dinner is $15, but with a pre-purchase of a complete dinner (via website) prior to the event, the admission is free. Free parking across the street. “Dinosaurs in Motion” at Moody Gardens Saengerfest Mini Monster Bash: This fall Moody Gardens will be presenting a brand new exhibit in the Discovery Museum. “Dinosaurs in Motion” will feature 14 fully interactive, life-size dinosaur sculptures made of recycled metal created by artist John Payne. The immersive exhibit blends together science, art, and innovation through life-sized metal sculptures. Each unique sculpture has exposed mechanics to illustrate science and technology principles in a fun and engaging way. The lifelike sculptures touch on these educational topics throughout the exhibit in a way much different than just reading about the goliath creatures that roamed the earth. “The dinosaurs by themselves were not enough,” Payne said about creating the pieces, “I had to bring life to them.” Coming to life from sketches, the dinosaurs were crafted from recycled metals and junkyard parts. Payne modeled each piece of the dinosaurs after their real-life anatomy for the perfectly accurate recreations. Present on each sculpture, guests can see hammer marks that were left in the process of bringing the giant works of art to life. “I don’t try to hide the hammer marks or the cutting marks or the welding marks,” Payne said. “They’re like the energy of the person who’s building it. It’s not a machine that’s building these, it’s a human being pounding with a hammer.” Admission is $14.95 for adults, $10.95 for seniors ages 65 and over and children ages 4 to 12, and children 3 and under are free. “Dinosaurs in Motion” is also included in a Moody Gardens Day Pass for $59.95 and a Two-Day Pass for $79.95. No offense guys – we still love you. We know you’re swamped in laundry, work, school, motherhood, wivery (not a real word, but we’ll go with it) – you know… life. But you really need to set aside one day for yourself and take on a different sort of challenge.” Gritty Goddess is a 5K obstacle course built just for women, no matter your age, shape, size, or athletic ability. It’s a way to get back to nature, and reconnect with your inner goddess. And it’s non-competitive, so you can take your sweet time, have fun, and enjoy every moment with your bosom buddies. There will be mud, sand, foam, and water involved (we said “get back to nature”) and some other, more colorful goop. You’ll also be required to run, crawl, climb, slide, balance, hoist, swing, stretch, and make your body do things it may not usually do. That’s all part of the fun! Books Fall Madness By Gini Rainey “Icy Sparks” by Gwyn Hyman Rubio Set in rural Kentucky in the 1950’s, “Icy Sparks” tells the story of a ten year old orphan, Icy Sparks, who is being raised by her grandparents. As if life wasn’t difficult enough for Icy, she soon begins to display the symptoms of what we now know as Tourette’s Syndrome, but was unnamed, misdiagnosed, and misunderstood in the 1950’s. Without revealing the diagnosis of Tourette’s until the last pages of this novel, Rubio lets now-grown Icy narrate her own tale of what it was like to live in a body that she, at times, had no control over and the reactions of the people around her. With strong character development, it isn’t long before the reader feels a kinship with the spunky young girl who fights against the disease that periodically took control of her body and made her feel more vulnerable than any 10 year old should ever have to feel. From the beginning of this book to the very end, Rubio takes the reader through a full range of emotions as experienced by Icy: joy and sadness, hope and disappointment, delight and misery. She has succeeded in creating an unforgettable character who should be a reminder to everyone that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Underneath all of the tics, gestures, and language, Icy was just a young girl who wanted nothing more than to be accepted and loved. Even though this was Rubio’s debut novel, she managed to portray the central character with a strong will to survive and provided the reader with an inspirational story of overcoming insurmountable obstacles. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 1998 – Penguin Books “The Bridge on Jackson Road: An Anthology of Dark, Spooky Stories” by Phyllis H. Moore Just in time for some good ol’ Halloween reading, this book is filled with the stuff nightmares are made of. Although not necessarily blood-chilling, you’ll find that reading these stories might just make you take a second look behind you when you’re walking down a dark street or sitting alone in your home. Named for a real location in south Texas where teenagers go on idle weekend nights, the Bridge on Jackson Road is a structure where,
if you holler, you might hear your own voice come echoing back to you – or perhaps something else. This book is easy reading at its best, but you might just want to take some time between stories to ponder exactly what might have been going on in the underlying mysteries of the dark and haunting tales. Whether or not you are a believer of ghosts, spooks, and things that go “bump” in the night, this book makes a perfect companion for campfires, stormy nights, and spooky holidays. Rating: 4 of 5, Copyright 2016 – DelCorazon Interests “The Girl in the Ice” by Robert Bryndza The first in a series of Detective Erica Foster detective crime novels, this book follows the search for a serial killer all the way to a surprise ending. Someone in London is killing off prostitutes and leaving quite a trail that Foster begins to connect to the same person. This “Wall Street Journal” and “USA Today’s” number one best seller is quite a genre switch from Bryndza’s usual romantic comedy novels and takes a hard look at the privileged lives and attitudes of a wealthy London family. Back on the job after a hiatus from her last case that resulted in Foster’s husband’s death, Erica is having to overcome not only feelings of guilt and loss, but also face a group of peers that aren’t quite sure she’s ready to be back at work. While you think you might have the end of this book figured out, be forewarned that nothing in this book is what it seems to be. With as many twists and turns as a country road, this plot is as complex as they come. This book is full of brilliantly created, realistic, solid characters and great dialogue. This book is absolutely riveting and full of more intrigue than you usually find in a debut novel. Bryndza has done a great job creating a character that will be able to hold her own through many more adventures in his series, and I hope he plans on several. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2016 - Bookouture
Galveston has witnessed more than its share of tragedies. Devastating hurricanes, yellow fever epidemics, fires, a major Civil War battle, and more cast a dark shroud on the city’s legacy. Ghostly tales creep throughout the history of famous tourist attractions and historical homes. The altruistic spirit of a schoolteacher who heroically pulled victims from the floodwaters during the great hurricane of 1900 roams the Strand. The ghosts of Civil War soldiers march up and down the stairs at night and pace in front of the antebellum Rogers Building. The spirit of an unlucky man decapitated by an oncoming train haunts the railroad museum, moving objects and crying in the night. Kathleen Shanahan Maca explores these and other haunted tales from the Oleander City. Kathleen Shanahan Maca lives in Clear Lake, Texas, and works on Galveston Island writing about its history. A graduate of Sam Houston State University, she is the author of “Galveston’s Broadway Cemeteries” from Arcadia Publishing and a member of the Texas Chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies. A fan of ghost stories and legends since she was a child, she uses her experience in historical research and genealogy to add dimension to local folklore. As part of the Galvez Bar & Grill events, author Kathleen Maca will read an excerpt from her newest book, “Ghosts of Galveston” including stories on Hotel Galvez’s ghosts and other tales in celebration of the most popular month for ghosts. All bar bite menu items will be half price, and the hotel’s popular Ghost Bride cocktail is $7. Purchase your book from the gift shop anytime 4-6pm. The reading will begin at 6pm in Galvez Bar & Grill. Kathleen will sign copies of her book following the reading. Free parking for Galvez Bar & Grill is available in the restaurant parking lot on Avenue P. Saturday, October 15th (2-4pm)

dham Grand® Hotel, is bringing a new buzz to the traditional coffeehouse experience through Wyndham Grand’s Brew Parlor: a fresh take on afternoon happy hour where people can meet, recharge, or simply take a breather over cold-brewed coffeebased drinks and cocktails developed in partnership with the brand’s “Chef de Caffeine,” award-winning culinary personality, Chef Stephanie Izard, and mixology maven, Ivy Mix. Coffee lovers can now experience coldbrewed pick-me-ups and hand-crafted caffeinated cocktails from 4-6pm every MondayFriday at The Tremont House’ 1888 Toujouse Bar, 2300 Mechanic St., downtown Galveston. The Tremont House is working with Houston roasting company, Katz Coffee for its coffee beans. The Tremont House joins Wyndham Grand hotels around the world in Chicago, U.S.; Shenzhen, China; Doha, Qatar; and Istanbul, Turkey already offering the one-of-a-kind program. Wyndham’s Grand Brew Parlor is also available at The Tremont House’s sister property, Hotel Galvez & Spa®, A Wyndham Grand® Hotel, located at 2024 Seawall Blvd. Wyndham Grand’s Brew Parlor is centered on cold-brewed coffee, an artisanal yet approachable trending drink consisting of coffee brewed for eight to ten hours with cold or room-temperature water, producing a condensed, smooth, and full flavor. Cold-brewed coffee is making its presence known in coffee shops around the world, reaching $7.9 million in sales in the U.S. - a 115 percent increase over the past year according to Mintel - and popping up throughout Europe. “We are excited to be the only properties in Galveston to serve cold-brewed coffee and coldbrewed coffee cocktails,” says Steve Cunningham, general manager of The Tremont House and Hotel Galvez & Spa. “This new take on coffee being brewed for eight to ten hours with cold or room-temperature water and spiced up with creative recipes provides a unique travel experience for our guests as well as locals.” Not only is coffee a universal daily beverage, but it has become an increasingly popular ingredient in cocktails, sweets, and savory dishes. Izard has created several proprietary cold-brewed coffee beverages available only at Wyndham Grand’s Brew Parlor like Five Spice Shaken Iced Coffee with Thai chili, cinnamon, clove, star anise, and sweetened condensed milk; Cafe Olé with dark chocolate, brown sugar, and ancho and guajillo chiles; and Biscotti Coffee with almond whipped cream and simple syrup made of star anise, fennel seed, and orange zest.

Galveston Art League
2117 Postoffice St., (409)6211008, galvestonartleague.com Vicki Wood is Galveston Art League’s featured artist this month. Vicki Wood and her husband Jim are recent transplants to Southeast Texas from Alaska. They wanted to be “done, done, and done” with shoveling snow and 20 below zero days. That desire led them to snow-birding in the Woodville area over two winters. In the spring of 2013, they decided to sell the farm on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, head south, and take up residence in Colmesneil, Texas. Vicki did not start working with any direction as an artist until the early 2000’s when she was recovering from major neck surgery and facing a huge lifestyle change. After another back surgery in 2008, she obtained an associate’s degree in art from the Kenai River Campus of the University of Alaska, Anchorage. As far as Vicki can remember, she has been immersed in color, the brighter, the better. She says it is “a throwback to my teen years in the 60’s with pop art, psychedelic murals, body art, windows filled with crystals – making rainbows everywhere.” As a beginning artist, she dabbled in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, but made a move to mostly dry mediums such as colored pencil after going on a workshop-cruise to the Caribbean in the spring of 2013. Vicki has continued her art education by attending workshops in watercolor, colored pencils, and pastels. She has had her works accepted in shows under well-known jurists and participates regularly in juried shows across Texas. During Galveston Art League’s fall 2014 juried show, Vicki’s colored pencil work of a Brown Pelican entitled “Baywatch” was selected to receive the annual McGivney Award for the best representation of Galveston and the Gulf Coast at the Art League’s fall juried show. That artwork has now been added to the Rosenberg Library museum’s permanent collection.
guano production factories?” is answered. David Snyder uses the word “kludge” to explain his approach to sculpture. Kludge, a term used by computer scientists and engineers, describes a poorly designed system of patchwork fixes and inelegant solutions. Snyder’s humorous work mixes earnestness and satire to explore a society often held together by such fixes. “For Me TV,” for the Hammer Museum’s “Made in LA” (2012), Snyder created a home’s façade caught in a state of mid-collapse. Inside the home, a chaotic plywood scaffolding housed Snyder’s cacophonous, homemade videos that parodied mass media. For his recent installation “Porous, Poor us, Por us” (2016), Snyder took objects found in the streets of Los Angeles and displayed them in a network of stucco shelves that snaked through the gallery as recordings from art auctions played. His installation at GAR will take on the “kludge” of our current political climate.

that the crowds mostly just wanted to dance. This influenced the band’s evolution from modern jazz to a lively, high-energy funk sound. Kentaro Saito, lead guitarist and vocalist of Otonana Trio, is not new to the American music scene. In fact he graduated from one of the most prestigious music schools in Hollywood with awards, and has a degree in Jazz performance. Kentaro began playing guitar at the corner of a French restaurant in NYC, getting paid $50 a night when he was a student in music school on 14th Street. This lit a fire in Kentaro to start a band. He and a couple of students at the school agreed that it was logical to play music other than Jazz to reach the masses. However, none of them had any formal vocal lessons or experience. This oddly, led them to become an avant garde punk
band. The punk band was somewhat popular by breaking into CMJ Top 80, headlining at one of the biggest festivals in Taiwan, Kentaro was described as “playing guitar like Hendrix, and performing stage kung-fu like Bruce Lee.” Although they had a good run the band decided it was time to move on. Kentaro moved back to Japan, but after the devastating Earthquake, he decided it was time for another change. He formed the new band Otonana Trio, and his old band mate came on board to help with bookings. Kentaro brought to the trio the Japanese version of the slap funk master in Kazuhisa Maekawa on bass, and the funkiest female drummer, Hikari Kuroda. The Dollie Barnes Band with El LAGO and Matt Mejia: Favorites Return to Old Quarter

Friday, October 7th at 8pm, Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe presents a favorite, the Dollie Barnes Band, a six-piece indie pop band from Houston featuring sounds from the 60’s and 70’s. This exciting band is always fun to see. David Garrick of “Free Press Houston” said about the band, “The Dollie Barnes sound is hard to describe not unlike her signature voice. Singer-songwriter John Evans said it best when he told me that her voice only works for her, and no one else could have her sound. Because I’ve been lucky enough to be around Barnes, I’ve gotten to see that she’s a savvy, intriguing, and multi-layered individual who just happens to be one of the most engaging artists I’ve seen in a good while.” “Over the past year or so, Dollie Barnes and front woman Haley Barnes in particular, has begun asserting itself as one of the most promising bands in town. Barnes, the woman (Dollie is a family nickname), was already wellknown to Houston audiences from her work in Buxton and Ancient Cat Society; a detour to Baylor University gave her the time and space to develop as a songwriter skilled at mingling mystery and melancholy a la Stevie Nicks. Chris Gray of “Houston Press” said, “Barnes, the local indie-pop band, also includes two members of Buxton and two guys from Robert Ellis’ band, plus Barnes’ fiance Tom Lynch, whom she and several bandmates join in aesthetically similar Houston outfit Vodi. Earlier this month, the band released the single ‘Taking All Day,’ a wistful and hummable track that prefaces their forthcoming debut album ‘Caught In a Phase.’” Opening for Barnes will be EL LAGO (ellagoband.com), an independent rock band from Galveston that blends the nostalgic palette of 90’s shoegaze with new pop chemistry. Matt Mejia will also perform with his bluesy, soulful vocals and guitar. Tickets are $8 at the door.
Singer-Songwriter Matthew Ryan To Perform Unplugged Concert At 1859 St. Joseph’s Church Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) will open the
doors to the 1859 St. Joseph’s Church, located 2202 Avenue K, Galveston, for a special night of music with acclaimed singersongwriter Matthew Ryan, on Thursday, October 20th at 7pm. Tickets are $20 per person and available online at galvestonhistory.org. Ryan’s performance will be completely acoustic, only using the incredible acoustics of the historic venue to highlight his highly regarded craft. A special selection of craft beer and wine will be available for attendees with a donation. Throughout a career that spans nearly two decades, Matthew Ryan has refined the poetry of his songwriting, creating his own aesthetic where beauty and darkness often trade punches from line to line—intelligent, minimalist, and unapologetic; it’s music for humans. Along the way, he has built a group of ardent supporters including the American treasure that is Lucinda Williams, as well as authors Michael Koryta and Jim Shepard (to name a few). Last winter, Ryan set up shop at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, New York, with a small team of friends: producer and multi instrumentalist Kevin Salem, The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon on guitar, longtime Ryan collaborator Brian Bequette on bass, Joe Magistro (The Black Crowes) on drums, Tracy Bonham on violin, and Ryan himself on vocals and guitars. They hunkered down to do the work of making a loud and beautiful rock and roll album. What transpired is at times spare, cinematic, and poetic, and at others raucous and loud; but always smart with heart to spare. From the silvery burst of feedback that opens the album, to the dissolving vérité of the last notes of the closing track, “Boxers” offers a rare rock and roll that never relents. Lyrically, musically, and sonically, “Boxers” is an authentic beauty. St. Joseph’s Church is the oldest German Catholic Church in Texas and the oldest wooden church building in Galveston and was built by German immigrants in 1859. Now desanctified and managed by Galveston Historical Foundation, the gothic revival church is distinguished by its elaborately detailed coffered wooden ceiling, delicately painted wooden sanctuary, original pews, and hand-carved altars. Previous artists who have performed there include The Trishas, Joe Pug, Ian Moore, and more.
About Galveston Historical Foundation
GHF was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and reincorporated in 1954 as a non-profit organization devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last 60 years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life, and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.
