8th annual BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival in sunny Galveston Island. With 400 craft beers, and rare “Taste it First” selections, the Free Beer Friday Bad A$$ Beard Contest, and more - this three-day event offers endless opportunities to learn from the best in the craft beer industry.

Craft breweries continue to open at a brisk pace across Texas, and BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is the perfect place to sip, savor, and explore the real meaning behind the phrase “Drink Local.” Whether you are a craft-loyal drinker looking for inspiration, or just a newbie finding your way, BrewMasters is the ultimate event for experiencing the distinctive world of craft beer.

Clifton McDerby, Executive Director of Food & Vine Time Productions, Inc. explained, “Our vision has always been to make sure that loyalists and newcomers to this event experience the widest selection of craft beers available at any Texas festival, along with brew education and an introduction to new brews coming available for the first time at BrewMasters.” McDerby continued, “This year we are planning pop-up tastings. Guests will be pleasantly surprised by this addition, we feel certain.”

But BrewMasters is more than just great tasting craft beer, according to McDerby it is a place to meet the people who make the craft beer industry a force to be reckoned with.

The festival is packed with beer, cheer, and plenty of foam-filled events happening each day over the Labor Day weekend. Friday night, September 1st kicks off at 7pm with the spirited Nach-Yo Ordinary Tequila Tasting event featuring a range of high-quality tequila-tasting and plenty of salt and nachos for all.

Frivolity abounds at the popular BrewMasters Friday Night Pub Crawl at 8pm where guests can climb aboard a festive party bus each of which is hosted by a brew brain and tour some of Galveston’s coolest bars.

Saturday, September 2nd is all about craft beer, and the innovative breweries that make it happen. As Texas ranks 8th in the amount of craft beer produced each year, visitors won’t want to miss the Texas Brewery Tasting Tour.

This tour provides a rare opportunity to meet some of the most successful and emerging breweries in the state. Guests will enjoy featured selections with each brewery offering a “Taste it First” selection in a small group and intimate environment with some of the most passionate and skilled brewers in the industry from 11:30am-12:45pm.

On Saturday afternoon, the ultimate BrewHaHa Grand Tasting begins with the chance to sample some of the best beer in the world, more than 400 of them to be exact. Don’t miss any of the “Taste it First” selections, which offer an exclusive opportunity to sample neverbefore-seen craft beers.

The Art Institute of Houston will present several cooking demonstrations showcasing how to cook with beer.

And finalists in the infamous Bad A$$ Beard Contest, presented by Free Beer Friday, will see if their mustache, goatee, and beard made the final cut.

BrewMasters goes out with a bang on Saturday and Sunday night with “Beach, Brews, and Bands” at Moody Garden’s Palm Beach with a live concert each night at Palm Beach.

To top off the foam-filled weekend, don’t miss the Brew-B-Que, Sunday September 3rd from 12 noon-5pm featuring smokin’ hot smokehouse specialties, live music, and of course, plenty of brews. Meet Rocky Stubbs from the infamous Stubb’s Barbecue empire, which started in 1968 when C.B. Stubblefield, “Stubb,” opened his first restaurant in Lubbock, Texas. Over the course of his life, Stubb perfected the art of barbecue including making the sauces, marinades, and rubs that today bring legendary Texas flavor to homes everywhere. Stubb was well known for his trademark smile and infamous line: “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a cook.”

Galveston to Host Free Fireworks Shows Every Weekend This Summer In Galveston, the summer weekends

Family Days at Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum

were a celebration with fireworks. But all good things must come to an end and the free firework shows will end the summer with a bang on September 3rd at 9pm.

These fireworks shows provide an opportunity for visitors to extend their weekends and enjoy additional entertainment at the beach and this Labor Day weekend is no exception.

Sponsored by the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), the fireworks displays will launch over the Gulf of Mexico near Seawall Blvd. and 37th Street.

27th Annual Adaptive Water Sports Festival:

Moody Gardens to Hold Festival for Individuals with Special Needs

In its 27th year, the annual Adaptive Water Sports Festival will be celebrated September 9th, 10am-4pm at Moody Gardens Palm Beach.

Individuals with special needs are invited to a day at the beach with Moody Gardens and Texas Adaptive Aquatics to participate for free in adaptive sports designed just for them.

Weather permitting, all guests ages eight and up who have special needs will have the opportunity to water ski, sail, kayak, and paddleboard with special equipment and instructors at no charge. Their immediate families and caregivers are also welcomed to attend and can enjoy free admission to Palm Beach.

Extended family and friends can participate by purchasing a regular admission to Palm Beach.

The Moody Gardens Adaptive Water Sports Festival is the largest multi-activity outdoor recreational event on the coast. This event reaches hundreds of families every year with the help of adaptive equipment and instructors from Turning Point Gulf Coast, Galveston Community Sailing, Island Paddle, Sun Time Watersports, and Texas Adaptive Aquatics as well as volunteers from around the community including UTMB. “We look forward to hosting this event every

year,” said Moody Gardens Education Curator Jennifer Lamm. “It provides the perfect opportunity for individuals with disabilities to come out and try something that they might not have had the chance to experience before, and it shows them that their disability does not stop them for being able to have fun just like everyone else.”

Each special needs individual is able to bring four guests with them. Activities are on a firstcome, first-served basis.

The Adaptive Water Sports Festival is one of several Hope Therapy events held at Moody Gardens every year.

Moody Gardens is a public, non-profit educational destination utilizing nature in the advancement of rehabilitation, conservation, recreation, and research.

On the second Saturday of every month, 10am-3pm, the Ocean Star celebrates Family Day. Each Family Day focuses on a different theme that relates to the offshore industry. The information is presented at a student’s level using activities or experiments. Children 18 years of age and younger are admitted free with a paying chaperone. Upcoming Family Days for 2017

September 9th - Life on a Rig - Step aboard the Ocean Star, and learn about the different kinds of offshore structures, what they do, and who works on them. Search the museum to discover more about these vehicles at sea, and see what you would look like as an offshore oil worker.

Try on safety gear, explore the old control room, and participate in a scavenger hunt during your visit.

October 14th - Sources of Energy - In addition to petroleum, learn about nine other energy sources and how each one is important to you at any moment of every day. See if you can put together an energy puzzle, and discover how renewable and nonrenewable energy affects your life.

November 11th - What’s on your Plate?

The continents of today once formed a large land mass known as Pangaea. Over time, the spreading of the sea floor and plate tectonics separated the supercontinent and created geologic formations. Using modeling clay and a special tool, you can speed up geologic time and see how subsurface processes create folding and faulting that affects where oil and gas can be found.

December 9th - An Offshore Holiday - The term “Christmas Tree” means something very different in the Oil and Gas Industry. See the museum’s version of a Christmas Tree while learning about polymer chains. Create a model of a simple carbon chain using red and green construction paper—fit for your very own holiday tree!

Free Family Movies

Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies throughout historic Downtown.

Movies begin just after dusk.

Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair for a free movie under the stars.

Movie Nite takes place the first Saturday of each month through October.

Music Nite on the Strand

Music Nite on the Strand features various artists the second Saturday of every month. The event is 6-9pm and free to the public.

Galveston Island Brewery is a local brewery in the Galveston - Houston area featuring an on-site tap room showcasing classic beer styles from around the world. The tap room is open seven days a week, Monday - Thursday 3-9pm, Friday 3pm-12 midnight, Saturday 12 noon-12 midnight, and Sunday 12 noon-9pm.

GIB offers free Brewery tours every Saturday at 1pm. Tours are about 30 minutes long, depending on customer interaction. Beer, camera, and questions are encouraged for the tour.

Historical Fun at The Bryan Museum This Fall The Bryan Museum, located in the historic

Galveston Orphans Home at 1315 21st St., houses The Bryan Collection, one of the world’s largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West. Assembled by J.P. and Mary Jon Bryan, the collection spans more than 12,000 years, with pieces ranging from ancient Native American cultural artifacts to modern twentyfirst century objects.

Bishop’s Palace Tours

The Bishop’s Palace (a.k.a. Gresham House) is a contributing building in the East End Historic District, a National Historic Landmark. Built of stone and steel for the railroad magnate Walter Gresham and his family, this famous house was designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier Victorian-era architect.

Bishop’s Palace is recognized as one of America’s finest examples of Victorian exuberance and Gilded-Age extravagance and is listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. On the first and third Tuesday of every month, people from all walks of life gather at The Proletariat Gallery & Public House to hear some of the finest words projected on stage. Upon entering, a sense of belonging is immediately bestowed upon you; people are greeting you and welcoming you into a world that shuts out the chaos of reality. A fine selection of wine and beer is at your disposal and art from local artists is put on display, decorating all the walls.

Before The Proletariat became what it is today, poetry had always been in circulation there, waiting to be released, heard, and understood. Tassie Wooldridge, also known as Big Mamma Tass, had been pushing for poetry for two years to breakout and to have a place where others could speak as well. She had a dream team in mind and had every intention of bringing it to life. Two years later, Big Mamma Tass sat in the living room of Myles Cooke with Lord Abraham Greatson and the three of them conjured up a name. A name that would change the face of poetry and spoken word. A name that felt natural rolling off the tongue, something unique, island-like, and showcased who these poets are.

Thus, Coast 2 Soul was born. After successful poetry events, The Proletariat was born and coowners Becky Major and Brian Visker decided to take a chance on Coast 2 Soul.

On March 7th, 2017, Coast 2 Soul had it’s very first Open Mic Night at The Proletariat with Myles Cooke (also known as The Legendary Gentleman) himself as host and the Houston Poetry Group, Write About Now, as a feature. I had been invited by a friend who knew I had been writing poetry for almost a year now. I

agreed to go, wanting to dive more into the scene and see what could come of it. We arrived early enough for me to sign up. It was all new to me; writing poetry, throwing myself out there and getting on stage was something I had always been afraid of doing.

A few of my close friends came out to listen to me speak. I was overwhelmed and my heart rattled in my chest until I had finished reading. I was surrounded by like-minded people: people who had passion and dedication fueling their every syllable and ink running through their veins.

It was a hit, an Island epidemic. Specialty drinks were being made that coincided with whom the featured poet was to be, people of different race, orientation, and background were being one with each other, and with every open mic that passed, people were becoming more courageous to get up on stage themselves to share their own stories. Soon enough, Visker gave word that there could now be Open Mic’s twice a month instead of one. This poetry community was growing and people were relying on this to be their getaway, an escape, a chance to go above the outcasted stereotype society places upon artists.

This is a place where everyone is given a chance. Not just to speak, but to be who they truly are. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done or where in life you are right now, you are welcome. To believe in poetry is to believe in the supernatural. So grab yourself a glass of wine, check out the artwork of local island artists, and grab a seat to listen to words that will shake up parts of you that you were unaware existed. Jacks Or Better Casino Boat: Gambling on a Sure Thing

The Jacks or Better Casino Boat Cruise started in Galveston in April 2017. The company was started about five years ago by the owner Mark Slotkin when he leased a boat in Florida, then moved the concept to Aransas Pass in Texas where service was provided for 18 months before moving to Galveston.

The move to Galveston was made to provide the best service and the greatest comfort for his customers. In Port Aransas, the sea floor drops precipitously to a 100 foot depth, causing a major current, creating waves two feet higher than at Galveston, which has only a 50 foot deep sea floor from the Yacht Basin all the way out for 10-12 miles. This ensures a smoother ride for the passengers, and the company goes well beyond that. If the waves are five feet or higher, they do not go out.

Before the trip, free of charge, they provide ear patches, wristbands, ginger candy, and Dramamine for their guests. The ginger candy and wristbands provide instant relief from any queasy stomach feeling once the trip is underway. The wristbands ingeniously apply pressure to a certain point in the forearm identified as a pressure point in the flow of energy (Qi). The ear patches

Mark Herrin is the General Manager and in charge of all aspects of the business. He was born in Richmond, Texas (just southwest of Sugarland), but grew up in Hempstead, Texas, which is about 40 miles north of Houston. He left home to join the Air Force and was stationed in Ft. Worth doing police duty, then attended Texas Christian University where he earned a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, he worked for Citigroup for 12 years rising to V.P. of Finance. Shortly after joining B&E Industries (a sports marketing company), he attended a new church, got talking to his future wife, dated her for two weeks, proposed, and they have been married now for 11 years.

Upon retiring, they moved to Corpus Christi, and he was looking for something to do. He signed on with Jacks or Better taking advantage of his Air Force Police experience to provide security. He then quickly moved to doing payroll with his financial background, then to Operations Manager, and finally to General Manager.

After moving to Galveston, the 155 foot vessel was painted throughout, and smoke eaters were installed. Smoking is not allowed inside the ship during the trip out and back, which takes about an hour and 20 minutes each way. Smokers can sit in lounge chairs and smoke on the top open air observation deck during the ride. Once the nine mile limit is reached, and the gambling starts, smoking is allowed within the casino during the three hours of gambling and sports book betting. On deck one, where all the slot machines are located, there is a non-smoking slot area, and for those who prefer table games found on deck two, a non-smoking table can be requested. The company tried a non-smoking cruise, but only 16 people showed up, and it was just not financially viable.

During the trip, passengers are provided with constant entertainment from a first class entertainer who leads dancing and singing. Food is

provided on deck two including burgers, wings, chicken sandwiches, and cheese steak, all for a maximum price of $8. In addition, on the Friday morning trip to the nine mile limit, there is a free Blackjack tournament with prizes awarded (cash cannot be offered until the international waters are reached). Lessons on how to play baccarat, craps, roulette, and other games are also given during this trip.

On average, each cruise has about 110 passengers, with as many as 230 people being entertained on a full trip. About 20% of customers are slot machine players. They are generally more mature in age than the roughly 80% of passengers who play both the table games and slots.

They tend to be 45 years old or younger. Most of the clientele come down I-45 to Galveston from the Houston area. They find this is a convenient alternative to going to the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Other areas that customers are drawn from include Texas City and Galveston.

Every two years the boat has to have a Coast Guard inspection. While the boat is in dry dock for the inspection, the company plans to change the pitch on the propellers to increase the speed.

This will shorten the trip out and back from one hour 20 minutes to one hour 5 minutes giving patrons more time to gamble. At the same time, they plan to upgrade the air conditioning system.

Like his staff, and in keeping with the high quality of service provided, Jacks or Better loves to see their passengers win. They posts winner’s pictures on Facebook, high fives them, and genuinely contributes to the fun. Passengers routinely celebrate winning, with high fives all around. Laughing and singing are encouraged, not frowned upon.

Knowing there are six million potential customers within the basin stretching from the Woodlands to Galveston, Jacks or Better Casino Boat is hoping to increase the number of cruises from the five presently provided. There are two six-hour trips each at 10:30am and 6:30pm on Friday and Saturday and one from 1-8pm on Sunday.

Jennifer Nelsen: Foodie for Thought

Written by Sharis Roe DeJaynes, photos provided by Jennifer Nelsen As a busy professional, I do not have much time to cook, though I do love to eat good home cooking. Bored with my own quick meals, I recently joined the “someone else cooks for me, please!” collective, and I couldn’t be more pleased. I hired local chef Jennifer Nelsen. Delivered with cooking instructions and the extra groceries necessary to finish the meal or dish, I initially chose chili, baked ziti, beef broccoli, and southwestern chicken. Since then, ceviche, beef stroganoff, and even pot stickers have likened my taste buds. Everything packs enormous flavor, and I simply had to sit her down and learn some of her secrets.

Island Guide: Where have you been all my life?

Nelsen: I was born in Dallas, Texas. I was raised there, went to high school there, and went to college there at SMU. I raised my 3 children there as well. Circa 2009, we moved to Galveston and I cook not only for my family, but for friends and clients alike, with my passionate yet scientific approach to food.

Island Guide: Tell us about when your love of cooking started.

Nelsen: I can thank my mother for allowing me in her kitchen at an early age. I was the strange child who, on Saturday afternoons, would not be outside playing with my friends. I would be inside watching Julia Child on TV – seriously, I was 6 or 7 years old. I loved and was fascinated by Child. I even dressed up like Julia Child for Halloween multiple times. Of course, no one knew who I was, but I did.

My grandmother was an excellent cook. Unfortunately, some of her recipes went to the grave with her. I’ve tried to replicate her pork chops, tacos, and the orange cake that was so moist it had to be held together with toothpicks, to no avail. She could do more with a box of Shake ‘n Bake than anyone I’ve ever known. I spent a lot of time with her growing up as my father and mother traveled quite a bit.

I remember my grandmother always had all her spices lined up on the top of the stove, so I did the same thing when I got my first apartment. I didn’t know what half of the spices were at the time, but I started experimenting…first with a box of Kraft mac and cheese, with tuna in it. I learned a lot by making mistakes.

Island Guide: What chef have you learned from the most?

Nelsen: I literally have every episode Julia Child has ever filmed. It’s hilarious seeing all the old appliances, and her dropping things on the floor, and “You can’t do anything without a good sharp knife!” (Nelsen says in her best Julia Child voice.)

When I was pregnant with my twins, I was on bedrest and we didn’t have cable. So, I had two options, watch the O.J. Simpson trial which was going on at the time or watch PBS. There were a lot of cooking shows on PBS in the afternoons, and I just kept watching. I literally would make my husband go to the store and get the ingredients so I could make what they were making. Of course, I’d totally screw it up. I was not good when I started, but I kept watching, and I kept trying, and I kept experimenting. It was the only thing I ever found that I didn’t get bored with. I couldn’t get too serious about cooking though because I had carpools, and school, and dance, and all things raising girls attend to. But then, Food Network came along and it was “game on!”

Island Guide: Who are more of your favorite chefs?

Nelsen: Ina Garten is by far my favorite Food Network chef.

She makes elegant food, and something anyone can do if you pay attention. I also like Alton Brown. He explained the science behind cooking and why when you mix butter and cream

it thickens, for instance. That certainly appealed to me. Emeril Lagasse was of course, always entertaining but I was way too intimidated to try one of his recipes. Emeril and Bobby Flay make amazing dishes, but the list of ingredients is longer than any kid’s Christmas list. Way too much for me.

And of course, there’s Robert Irvine. I had the opportunity to interview and write about Robert Irvine, twice.

Island Guide: When did you get serious about cooking?

Nelsen: I started getting serious about 10 years ago when the kids were a bit older.

We had a party and my next-door neighbor held up a plate of my food in front of me. I thought “uh oh, he hates it,” but he said, “Jennifer, you have a gift.” I was floored, and that was the validation I needed to keep going and growing. Once people started asking me to make a dish here and there, my confidence grew even more.

I’m dead serious about my cooking now.

I constantly create – it’s not the same thing over and over. There are dishes now though, that I can do in my sleep, and that’s comforting. I love teaching people how to cook as well. It’s like teaching a man to fish, as the saying goes.

Island Guide: What are your favorite tools?

Nelsen: All-Clad cookware and a T-fal non-stick skillet. Good cookware is a must.

I have a Vitamix blender, a Cuisinart, and a KitchenAid mixer. Knives are personal, and I own Wüsthof knives. I’m a bit of a kitchen tool hoarder overall, truth be told.

Island Guide: Can you share a few random tips, tricks, and a recipe, please?

Nelsen: Sure thing!

Build relationships with your butcher and produce folks at your grocery store of choice. They can help get you what you need.

On making your own Pizza dough: It’s a challenge for sure, but low and slow works best. Give it special pizza flour, and the 24-hour curation it deserves.

Make your own chicken stock, for multiple uses. Boil rice or pasta in it for more flavor. It’s easy to make and you can freeze it for later use.

Your Thanksgiving Turkey: Soak it in a buttermilk brine for 3 days, and get a Butterball, period. And speaking of Thanksgiving, plan early and buy what you need early.

Must have knives: Paring knife, boning knife, and a chef’s knife. Literally, try them on for size in your hands, and buy them separately. You don’t need a billion knives, nor should you store them in a wood block (it’s simply unsanitary) and never put them in the dishwasher.

Island Guide: What services do you provide?

Nelsen: I can provide prepared microwave meals, Crock-Pot meals, quick to make casseroles or pasta dishes, and the like. I can come to your house and cook for you. I can cater private dinners for six or less. Perhaps you just need appetizers for a party you’re hosting? I can do that too. I’d love to cook for anyone who appreciates food as much as I do.

Island Guide: Even chefs have guilty food pleasures, what are some of yours?

Nelsen (laughing): To this day, I still love Kraft deluxe mac and cheese, Shake ‘n Bake pork chops, and SpagettiOs with franks, right out of the can. Burger King and Taco Bell too. There, I said it! My secret is out!

Galveston State Park Offers Family-Friendly Outdoor Activities The Galveston State Park has numerous events going on this

month. These events are fun for the entire family. Most events are free, however, you must pay $5 to get into the park. Events are: September 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and October 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th (10-11:30am) – Beach Exploration - Hunt for Island treasures with a knowledgeable guide. Beach Exploration hikes start at the park’s Nature Center located on the bay side of the park, close to the main highway.

September 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd (2:30-3:30pm) – Insect Safari - Catching, observing, and releasing some six-legged friends is fun. Bug nets will be provided, and you will be heading to the fields in search of bug-eyed, six-legged critters from butterflies to grasshoppers. This fun-filled catch-studyrelease program is perfect for children of all ages who have a fascination with the world of insects.

September 2nd, 16th, 30th (5:30-8pm) - Sunset Paddle - Join this adult paddling program. In this session you will receive quick instruction, free gear rental, and a guided trip into a protected cove of Galveston Bay. Limited spaces are available, and reservations are required.

The Gulf Coast Volleyball Association Continues

The Gulf Coast Volleyball Association (GCVA) is the largest outdoor volleyball association on the Gulf Coast and has been rated the #1 outdoor volleyball organization by Outdoor Volleyball USA. You do not have to be a GCVA member to participate.

Check-in at East Beach is at 8:30am with tournaments beginning promptly at 9am.

three exhibitions this month.

In the 1st floor gallery, Bradley Kerl presents new paintings and works on paper, including still lifes and imagery mined from his day-to-day experiences, for “Greenhouse.”

In the 2nd floor 1878 Gallery, Angel Oloshove presents “The Ocean Never Closes,” a new series of ceramic totems that experiment with painterly glazes to express feelings of transcendental experiences through form and color.

The 2nd floor Brown Foundation Gallery features Christopher Cascio’s exhibition, “XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX,” which includes a new series of paintings that reference traditional quilt patterns and his past work incorporating concert wristbands.

These exhibitions will remain on view through October 8th.

Houston-based painter Bradley Kerl presents “Greenhouse,” an exhibition of recent work ranging from works on paper to large-scale paintings. Kerl mines his day-to-day experiences for image-making opportunities: classroom stilllife arrangements, a flowerbed at the grocery store, potted plants at the doctor’s office. These seemingly mundane moments offer the artist an opportunity to develop his particular vernacular. With the inclusion of etchings, works on paper, and small canvases, the artist’s varied approach to making fully realized, large-scale paintings will be on view for the first time in a major exhibition.

Angel Oloshove presents a new series of ceramic totems that reflect on the land, environment, and its constant state of flux for the exhibition “The Ocean Never Closes.” Oloshove’s work experiments with painterly glazes

to express feelings of transcendental experiences through form and color. She describes her stacked stupa as connecting earth, water, fire, wind, and the void. Oloshove’s works are beacons, reveling in the beauty of the day and standing strong to weather the greatest storm.

In her work, clay is brought to a new light, as stone, vibrating with the history of the land.

Christopher Cascio explores themes of obsession, compulsion, and ritual through painting and mixed media works. His exhibition, “XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX,” includes a new series of paintings that reference traditional quilt patterns and his past work incorporating concert wristbands. The title of the exhibition is intended to be both immediate and cryptic, redacted in an effort to reflect its futility.

GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information, and map can be downloaded at galvestonartscenter. org. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times.

their fifth year in business. “I opened the art gallery after my wife Brenda pointed out that no one was going to come to the front door of our home, knock, and say ‘Hey I hear you make some great art, can I take a look?’, owner and resident artist George Douglas Lee laughs and reminisced. “Brenda was working in Canada at the time. When she came home during a work break I told her that I’d rented gallery space.

Boy was she ever surprised!”

Lee credits the Gallery’s success to several factors. The Gallery’s unique, high quality offerings, includes Lee’s broad spectrum of artwork.

The Gallery seeks out compelling guest artists, having featured more than 25 artists, both local and out-of-state, for one person shows. The annual Brushes By the Beach® Plein Air contest, the only open plein air art contest in the greater Houston area, brings artists from across the country to compete with the added benefit of supporting Artist Boat’s Youth Eco-Art adventures. The SWAN Day (Support Women Artist Now) event, promotes the many women artists in the community making it a more beautiful and thoughtful place.

“Galveston is a beautiful island, it’s been inspiring artists for generations,” Lee said.

“Because of that history, our community is broadly supportive of visual arts. It’s simple the Gallery wouldn’t be here without community support; we can’t do it without you.”

The Gallery offers customers unique, original art and prints by local and national artists, children’s books, and music.

Art is available for sale and for rent for events, openings, and real estate stagings. The gallery serves as world headquarters for Lee’s popular history tours.

Saengerfest Park, located in the heart of Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find affordable fun for the season. Saengerfest Park is a small square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District.

Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for movie and music nights throughout the year.
