The Grand 1894 Opera House:

Wynonna & The Big Noise Opens the New Season The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at

“Wait Until Dark: A Psychological Thriller” at ETC A blind woman, a policeman, a con man, an

old friend, a lost doll, and a murder – all of this and more will keep you on the edge of your seat when Island ETC opens “Wait Until Dark” on Friday, September 14th. Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Frederick Knott’s (“Dial M for Murder”) classic thriller is a slow burn that builds in menace until the gripping climactic conclusion. “Wait Until Dark” is as anxiety inducing as an old film noir, but also has many laugh-out-loud moments that balance the tension. “Wait Until Dark” is a wonderful statement about finding your inner strength to overcome insurmountable obstacles, refusing to be a victim, and fighting the true monsters in the world around you. The talented cast from throughout the Houston/Galveston area includes: Laurel Powell (Susan), Matt Poole (Roat), Riley Harper (Mike), Kyle Wright (Carlino), Kelsey Perkins (Gloria), and Juan Buitrago (Sam). Directed by Kim Mytelka, the production team includes Tom Boone (Scenic Design), Nancy Dougherty (Costume Design), Lisa Miller (Light Design), Jennifer Daugherty (Sound Design), and David Cooley (Stage Manager). “Wait Until Dark” opens on Friday, September 14th and continues through October 6th.

They take classic Doo Wop songs from the 50’s and 60’s and make ‘em sound fresh and new…and they take contemporary pop hits by stars like Jason Mraz, Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Maroon 5, and “doowopify” them. Gabriel Royal: The Underground Cello Project

His sensual singing voice and sonorous cello accompaniment developed while playing and singing in the New York subways. Gabriel’s musical influences include Stevie Wonder’s groove, Burt Bacharach’s relaxed, jazzy yet poppy sensitivities, and the multi-talents of alternative contemporary artists including John Legend, Hiatus Coyote, Flying Lotus, James Blake, Jangle Monae, and Thundercat. Tickets are $30$75. This project is sponsored in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts.

Hurricane Harvey, two sisters seized their opportunity to open a new retail business in Galveston’s central business district. Becky Palmer, from Spring, Texas, and her local sister, Tammie Taylor, opened the doors to Antiques on Winnie, September 30th, 2017. Today their business, aptly located on Winnie between 23rd and 24th streets, is thriving. Tourists and locals alike have deemed the store a “must stop” when antiquing in Galveston. “We love meeting customers from all over Texas and beyond,” said Palmer, “but it’s really great to be appreciated by your local patrons too.” Antiques on Winnie has become a favorite spot on the Galveston Art Center’s ArtWalk. The store stays open until 9pm on ArtWalk nights, and offers customers complimentary hors d’oeuvres, champagne punch, and a selection of wines. “ArtWalk is always a really festive time around here,” explains Taylor. “We have fun preparing delicious bites and drinks to share with our customers, and we end up having a great evening selling antiques and visiting with friends, old and new.” The next ArtWalk is Saturday, October 13th, which will also be the date Antiques on Winnie hosts its one year anniversary celebration. Palmer and Taylor have plans to serve food and beverages all day and say they are working out details for more fun, so check out their website or

Facebook page for the latest. “We are so happy and really proud to mark a year of success in our business,” said Taylor. Palmer added. “We’re excited to build on the great start we’ve had, and we look forward to an even bigger and better second year.” The store features a wide variety of constantly changing merchandise creatively curated by the two sisters, along with their friend and long-time local antique dealer Jo Mooney. The three of them work hard to bring their customers outstanding, quality furniture, glassware and china, collectibles from old bottles to rosaries, vintage books, albums, clothing, and Galveston souvenirs and treasures – there’s something to fit most any budget or style at Antiques on Winnie. He invented one of the earliest food-trucks, the chuckwagon, and the survival of the American Bison also owes much to his and Molly Goodnight’s conservation efforts in the Texas Panhandle. “The Life and Times of Charles Goodnight” looks at the story of Goodnight’s life through the lens of contemporary Western and Wildlife artist Lee Cable. Cable’s series of 13 paintings is a conscious balancing act between solid historical research and artistic license. As Cable says, “In the case of Goodnight much is written, not much is illustrated.” This body of work aims to change that. The paintings are complemented by a display of authentic Charles Goodnight artifacts from institutions across the state.

Even More Reasons to VisitWithGalveston This Fall cooler weather, Galveston comes alive

in the fall with its popular outdoor events and festivals – some popular traditions and activities that both locals and visitors look forward to every year. As the leaves turn colors and as the beach crowds wane, the focus is now more on the arts, theater, music, dining, sightseeing, bike riding and walking along the Seawall to enjoy the cool breezes. And then there are the holiday events – from the spooks and ghosts of Halloween to the island’s longstanding “Dickens on The Strand” festival. Here are highlights of just some of the things you can do in Galveston this fall: The Fall Migration for Bird Watchers & Amazing Fishing Autumn is one of the best times to go fishing on the island. Flounder, red drum, and trout are especially active as they start feeding for the winter, meaning you just might catch a few fish you can brag to your friends about. See our Fishing on the Island article at galvestonislandguide.com/where-to-fish-on-galveston-island. Fall is also bird migration season and Galveston sits in the heart of the trans-Gulf migration route. Get your binoculars and explore the island’s shorelines, prairies, and waterways to see non-native birds like the sandhill crane, sharpshinned hawk, and Mississippi kite. For a complete guide, go to galvestonbirds.org. When you’re not fishing or birdwatching, rent a stand up paddleboard and hit the waves at the Galveston Seawall, explore the kayaking trails in Galveston Island State Park, or simply kick back and catch a refreshingly cool sea breeze. And if you are not into fishing for your dinner, be sure to check out the harbors seafood shops. The Texas Gulf Coast is all about the seafood, and you won’t find it any fresher than at Galveston’s own Katie’s Seafood Market and Sampson & Son’s. Step into either market and you’ll see whole red snappers, redfish, tilefish, and groupers, as well as shrimp that were caught just hours before. Fillets are available as well, just in case you don’t know how to clean a fish. And if you don’t want to even cook it, you can take your taste of the Gulf to Olympia Grill at Pier 21 and they’ll prepare it for you. Since Gulffresh fish is hard to find, make sure to stop by on your way out of town to stock up. Cocktails with a View Sip on a cocktail and watch the sun set over historic downtown Galveston at The Rooftop Bar, a sophisticated openair joint perched on top of The Tremont House. Drink in a stunning view of Downtown Galveston you won’t get anywhere else and order up a tasty

cocktail or a pint of craft beer. Once the sun sets, bask in the soft glow of lights from the eight-foottall Manzanita tree as you find a cozy spot on one of the sectional couches. The Rooftop Bar is just as ideal for a romantic date night or an evening with friends, but it’s not the only unique spot in town. Indulge in a craft cocktail, or your choice of a selection of beer and fine spirits, at the upscale Daiquiri Time Out (2701 Market St.). For tropical drinks, seafood eats, and views of the beach, the Rum Shack (3204 Seawall Blvd.) is for you. Marina Bar & Grill (715 N. Holiday Dr.) offers wonderful views in a local’s favorite casual atmosphere. Regardless of where you end up, you’re guaranteed a good night out on Galveston Island.

Fall Events

Galveston Island Shrimp Festival: September 28th-29th Galveston Island is a seafood lover’s paradise all year round, but in September Yaga’s Entertainment Inc. will bring foodies a little taste of heaven at the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival featuring some of the best shrimp gumbo the Gulf Coast has to offer. Event festivities include Galveston Island Shrimp Festival Official 5K Fun Run, Shrimp Gumbo Cook-Off, Lil’ Shrimps Parade, the Strand Merchant Walkabout, and more. ArtWalk: October 13th For over 25 years, the Galveston Art Center has produced an ArtWalk on Saturday nights in the heart of the historic district. Now spreading to other parts of the Island, ArtWalk occurs approximately every six weeks. Not a street festival, ArtWalk takes place in existing commercial galleries, non-profit arts spaces and what are called “other walls” - restaurants and retail stores. One of the Galveston Arts Center’s largest programs, ArtWalk promotes visual art and supports our arts-based community, offering alternative places to see and learn about art. Galveston Island Greek Festival: October 13th-14th Galveston’s lively Greek Festival brings together top Greek dishes along with a variety of Greek ornaments, icons, jewelry, and artwork that will please the most discerning shoppers. In its 35th year, the festival will include traditional foods like beef souvlaki, gyro, pastitsio, tiropites (cheese puff triangles), and favorites spanakopita (spinach triangles), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), and keftedes (meat balls). And don’t forget the Greek salad with olives and feta cheese. ARToberFEST: October 20th-21st Sponsored by the The Grand 1894 Opera House, ARToberFEST is the island’s biggest art event bringing together more than 125 artists from all over the country, each showcasing

This fun, family festival weekend will feature continuous live entertainment on two stages, authentic German food and libations, Cake Wheel, fine arts, crafts, and gifts, an exciting auction, exciting family and children’s activities, and much more. Oktoberfest will be held on the grounds of and streets adjacent to First Lutheran Church, 24th and Winnie, in historic downtown Galveston. Admission is free. German costumes encouraged. The festival will be free to the public and include Trick or Treat stops at local businesses throughout Downtown Galveston. And...Ghost Tours. Need We Say More? Throughout its turbulent - and sometimes tragic - history, Galveston has been home to cannibalistic Indians and marauding pirates, and it has also weathered the deadliest natural disaster in American history. No wonder it’s one of the most haunted cities in the country. What better time to experience the island’s spooky side than Halloween season? Fortunately, there are an abundance of captivating ghost tours that will give you all the spine-tingling chills you could ask for. Explore some of the island’s most active paranormal hot spots with Dash Beardsley, the one

and only Ghost Man of Galveston. Visit some of the creepiest locations in the Strand Historic District, or embark on an eerie journey into the Old City Cemetery, the resting place of Civil War soldiers and victims of The Great Storm of 1900. Dash Beardsley’s tours are held throughout the year, but there are a few that you can only go on in the fall. Take a ghost tour of the 1859 Ashton Villa for a chance to see the spectral form of former resident Miss Bettie Brown. Meanwhile, a sunset cruise to some of the island’s mysterious places is a gripping way to learn about Galveston’s supernatural past. November 1st-4th: Lone Star Rally With juried bike shows, truck, jeep and classic car shows and free concerts on two stages, this year’s Lone Star Rally will be jam packed with entertainment for all ages, day and night, all weekend long. This year’s rally will once again present more than 40 free musical performances in genres from classic rock and adult contemporary to rockin’ country on two sound stages - the main stage at Saengerfest Park downtown, and a second at Beach Central Park in front of the Hotel Galvez. Houston area day trippers are encouraged to come out and enjoy all the free, non-stop entertainment only the Lone Star Rally provides. Big rig displays of motorcycle parts and accessories will dot the island’s three event zones: Downtown/The Strand, Harborside at Pier 21, and Beach Central Park at Seawall. As well, hundreds of vendors selling everything from leatherwear to jewelry, sunglasses to crab cake sandwiches, will fill every nook and corner of the Strand and along the seawall. Books Some Things to Think About By Gini Rainey

“The Isle of Gold” by Seven Jane If you like to read adventure books that have everything from swashbuckling pirates to mystical lands beneath the sea, then this is the book for you. Set in 1716 – the golden age of pirates – this book follows the adventures of Merrin Smith, an orphaned waif who was raised in the kitchen of a quayside brothel. Written by Seven Jane, a “dark fantasy and speculative fiction,” this book is filled with more pirates and fantasy than you can shake a stick at. When Merrin, at the tender of age of probably fourteen or so, decides to join the crew of the pirate ship Riptide in order to discover who her parents were, she disguises herself as a pirate and falls under the watchful eye of the notorious Captain Winter, whose madman antics and behavior keep everyone on board in line, lest they get run through by one of the many daggers he has hanging from his belt. When she meets the handsome boatswain, Tom Birch, a bit of unrequited love begins to weave itself into the story. Fortunately, or perhaps not so fortunately, as time passes on the Captain’s quest to find the mythical island of Bracile (a place hidden between air and sea and that exists only for a moment every two years - and which has never returned any man who has sailed for its shores) Merrin’s body begins to mature and she must now bind herself to prevent anyone on board from discovering that she is a woman. This book is a delightful romp and an easy read filled with the things that will keep the reader engrossed to the very end. Pour yourself a glass of wine, curl up in your comfy chair and let Seven Jane take you a mystical place filled with adventure and romance. Rating: 4 of 5 – Copyright 2018, Black Spot Books “Gracie’s Secret” by Jill Childs This book is one long emotional rollercoaster. Beginning when Jen’s 3-year old daughter Gracie is involved in a car accident and nearly dies, the emotions of everyone involved are raw and aching. While the character development was good, as was the premise, there were many things about this book that left me wondering “why?” Following the accident, Gracie had a near death experience and met angels who asked her if she wanted to stay or go home. She chooses to go home and shares with her non-religious mother that she met a man in heaven who is later identified as the archangel, Saint Michael after

spotting a statue in a parish church. There could be a spoiler alert here, but I won’t tell anymore, so no need for one. It was too far into the book that the plotline began getting convoluted and twisted. Lots of accusations and insidious mysteries are uncovered, and suffice it to say, the intrigue became deeper and deeper. I, for one, had no idea where this was all heading, but when everything started falling apart and coming together, I had a hard time moving through to the end of the book. I will say that I kept turning the pages and finished the book, but there were many things that I had to question. For one, if Gracie’s mom, Jen, was so completely devastated by her recent divorce, it amazes me how quickly she falls for the doctor she met while Gracie was in a coma. Doctor Matthew steps into their life and begins to fill all of the voids they had both been experiencing since the divorce. He steps in way too easily. All of that being said though, this is a pretty intriguing book and well worth the read. Rating: 4 of 5 – Copyright 2018, Bookouture

Galveston Bookshop Book Signings:

“Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of TheGalveston Line”Bookshop by Kimber Fountain is located at 317 23rd St. in Downtown

Galveston. For more info call (409)750-8200 or go to galvestonbookshop.com. Saturday, September 22nd (2-4pm) - “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line” by Kimber Fountain Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Kimber Fountain and her new history of Galveston’s legendary red light district. Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy and infamous red-light district. Called simply “The Line,” the unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came alive every night with wild parties and generous offerings of hourly love. A stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years, it finally shut down in the late 1950’s. But ridding Galveston of prostitution would prove much more difficult than putting a padlock on the front door. Kimber Fountain pursues the sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them. Kimber Fountain is the editor-in-chief and feature writer for “Galveston Monthly” magazine and serves as chairperson of the Arts and Historic Preservation Advisory Board to the Galveston City Council. She is also the author of “Galveston Seawall Chronicles,” a history of Galveston’s Seawall, its construction, and subsequent impact on the city’s tourist trade and economy. She can also be found on stage at the Island East-End Theater Company. Ms. Fountain resides in Galveston. Copyright 2018, The History Press, Soft cover, $23.99

Creative Exhibitions & Classes at Galveston Arts Center

“Low Magic” Continues on Exhibit Opening Saturday, August 25th, 6-9pm will be Fort Worth-based artist Jesse Morgan Barnett’s exhibition “LOW MAGIC,” which follows the artist’s correspondence with Valery Spiridonov, the first confirmed head/body transplantation patient, and works through questions about conditionality, perseverance, and naturalistic interpretations of luck. In the second floor 1878 and Brown Foundation Galleries, “Visual Pathology” presents a collaboration with GAC and the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. In collaboration with six pathologists from UTMB, artists Steve Fisher, Mark Greenwalt, Colleen Maynard, Sarah Sudhoff, and Kamilla Szczesna were given access to the remnants of UTMB’s historical pathological and surgical pathology collections as an inspirational starting point for the exhibition. Both artists and pathologists worked in teams to consider the history of the collection and current research undertaken at UTMB. The resulting exhibition explores the intersections between pathological and creative practices. On Thursday, September 6th, join “Visual Pathology” artists and pathologists for a conversation about the project and their work at 6pm. These exhibitions will remain on view through October 7th. About GAC GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston.
