Continued from page 1 Yom Kippur war, he concluded, “Today, winds of peace are blowing from North Africa across the Mediterranean to the Gulf. This trip, Mr. President, is your journey of peace from Israel to Saudi Arabia, from the Holy Land to the Hejaz.” Lapid told Biden the visit was “historic” and expressed an “unbreakable bond” between the countries. There was, he noted, a commitment to shared values of democracy, freedom and the right of the Jewish people to a state of their own. Noting Biden had not been to Israel for a number of years, Lapid said he would see how Israel had grown and developed. Lapid observed, “You will see the strength and smartness of the Israeli army, the creativity of the start-up nation, the diversity of Israeli society. Israel is a country that brings together the past, present and future.” He added, “During your visit, we will discuss matters of national security. We will discuss building a new security and economy architecture with the nations of the Middle East, following the Abraham Accords and the achievements of the Negev Summit. And we will discuss the need to renew a strong global coalition that will stop the Iranian nuclear program. There will be time for all of that. Right now, we are simply happy to see you. Mr. President, Welcome to Israel.” Lapid and Defence Minister Benny Gantz went on to offer Biden an insight into Israel’s anti-air missile capabilities including the Iron Beam laser which targets rockets, UAVs and mortar shells. Gantz spoke about Iran’s nuclear programme, regional cooperation and called for improved security relations. Lapid and Herzog joined Biden’s visit to Yad Vashem to conclude the day’s official proceedings. Biden’s delegation included Secretary of State Antony Blinken, White House staff, advisors and security personnel. Today, Lapid and Biden will hold a oneto-one meeting then bilateral agenda meeting with both delegations. The two leaders will also participate in the first I2U2 virtual meeting with UAE President Mohammad bin Zayed and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The

Biden in a packed agenda will attend a special ceremony at Herzog’s President’s residence where he will receive the Presidential medal and the opening ceremony of the Maccabiah Games at Teddy Stadium where he will meet the American athletic delegation competing. Biden tomorrow visits Augusta Victoria Hospital then Bethlehem to meet Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas before departing for Saudi Arabia. Ahead of Biden’s arrival, Israel and the US announced a strategic partnership of advanced technology. Israel will be at the “forefront of global innovation” and solidified its status as a “leading technological power,” said Lapid. The strategic alliance will be established

Biden to receive Presidential honour 4 NEWS

BY DAVID SAFFER

President Isaac Herzog will award the Israeli Presidential Medal to US President Joe Biden during his state visit to Israel this week. The accolade will be made at the President’s Residence in recognition of Biden’s friendship with Israel, commitment to Israel's security, contribution to enhancing the alliance between Israel and US, and struggle against anti-Israeli and antisemitic hatred around the world. The Presidential Medal of Honor advisory committee noted, “President Biden is a true friend of the State of Israel and the Jewish People. The United States is Israel’s closest ally, a fact to which the President of the United States gives expression in word and deed. Since the start of President Biden’s rich career in public service in the 1970s, he has established himself as a person who loves Israel and is a true friend of the whole Jewish people. “For half a century, the President has stood by the State of Israel, has given his unconditional support to its right to exist, and has fought with determination to expand U.S. assistance to Israel. In this, the President gives expression in word and deed to the importance of the alliance between Israel and the United States, to his commitment to deepen the cooperation between them, to his support for Israel’s security, and to his commitment to firmly

Lapid praises IDF graduates BY ADAM MOSES

Israel is stronger than its enemies and will not hesitate to use force against them Prime Minister Lapid told IDF officer's graduating last week. Lapid added that despite security threats Israeli people were stronger and would stand together. “You cannot win on your own," was the message from Lapid to the 463 IDF officers who he described as an “elite team” of the Israeli people. “You may not share the same views but you share the same values,” he observed. “You don't complete officer training in the IDF without a strong personality and will. You are competitive and want to prove yourselves. You chose to dedicate your lives to a common purpose, to a common good.” Lapid outlined threats including a nuclear Iran, Hezbollah's precision-guided missiles in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza and terrorist cells in Jenin but Israel would keep

its citizens safe. “Our enemies need to know that at any given moment, we are stronger, more sophisticated and tougher,” he explained. “Our enemies need to know one more thing, we stand together against them. Israeli society is stronger than any disagreement. Israel's strength is the strength of unity.”

Lapid said officers are taught that you cannot win on your own. He explained, "If you want to be trusted, you must have trust in your troops and your commanders. Our mission as a society is to restore trust in our democracy, trust in the IDF, in the police, in the courts. But primarily, we must restore our trust in one another.”

hosted by U.S. Ambassador Thomas R. Nides last week. He said, “The President is a longtime friend of Israel, who is known for his faith and resolve, as much as his warmth and decency.” Former PM Naftali Bennett, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, government ministers, Knesset MKs, foreign ambassadors and diplomats attended the event. “Since its founding over two centuries ago the American model has been an inspiration to the world,” noted Herzog. “The US has championed so many weighty values derived from the Holy Bible and Jewish thought. It has gifted the global community with unprecedented prosperity and security, pushed the boundaries of individual freedom, and pioneered the notion of liberty, equality and the pursuit of happiness.” Regarding Israel-US relations, Israel’s president noted, “The Israeli and American peoples are bound together by a deep kinship, which overcomes disagreement and transcends political affiliation. The close strategic alliance Israel and US share, most notably in defence and regional security are a fundamental pillar in our bilateral ties. We will never take this partnership or friendship for granted. The remarkable American Jewish community also comprises a vital part of the American mosaic. It has enriched the deep friendship our nations share and deeply influenced Israel going back to its early days. Lapid said officers were Israel’s “deterrence”. He observed, “It's not something we get as part of an American aid package. Israeli deterrence is built on the strength of young people who are ready to push themselves to the limit and beyond. “Each time you encountered difficulty, you said to yourselves, 'This is my test and I will pass it. I will fall again and again, but each time I fall, I will get up.'” Lapid added that officers having completed the course were capable to withstand hardships. “You know what it's like to compete when the conditions are not in your favour,” he said. “You crossed the finish line because you told yourselves, "I'm not looking for excuses why I failed, I'm looking inside myself for the strength to keep going until I get there and become one of the best." He added, “The best version of yourself is the version that knows how to work together for the State of Israel, that the purpose of disagreements is not to fight, but rather to reach a better outcome.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Maj.-Gen. Motti Baruch and Col. Yehuda Vach attended.

Global outrage at Abe murder BY DAVID SAFFER

Jewish leaders echoed global condemnation over the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Nara, near Osaka, ahead of elections last Friday. Police arrested Tetsuya Yamagami who confessed to planning the crime. The murder has shocked the Japanese nation. Enormous crowds paid respect to Abe, 67, before a private funeral at the Zojoji temple on Tuesday. Police reportedly stated that Yamagami linked Abe to a religious group he blames for his mother's financial ruin and break up of his family. World leaders have been shaken by the murder and offered glowing tributes to the respected statesman, who was Japan's longest-serving post-war prime minister. Abe stepped down from public office in 2020 due to health issues. Prime Minister Yair Lapid sent condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Israel. “Abe was one of the most important leaders of modern Japan and a true friend of Israel who brought about flourishing and prosperous relations between Israel and Japan,” he said. “His heinous murder will not change his distinguished legacy. Israel bows its head and mourns the loss of Abe together with the people of Japan." President Isaac Herzog was horrified at the “despicable” murder of one of Japan's most

“preeminent leaders in modern times”. “We met when I chaired Israel's Opposition, I was deeply impressed by his leadership, vision and respect for Israel,” he noted. Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy visited Japanese Ambassador to Israel Koichi Mizushima to offer condolences and was the first person to sign in a condolence book in memory of Abe. “His tragic death is a despicable act of violence that has no place in a democratic society,” Levy wrote. “PM Abe was a great friend of Israel and architect of the robust relations we enjoy today.” Israeli cities showed solidarity by illuminating sites and displaying the Japanese flag in memory of Abe who visited Yad Vashem in 2018 trip. Abe had been to a number of Holocaust sites during his premiership including the Holocaust Museum in Washington and Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumo Kishida condemned the assassination and described Abe as a “personal friend”. US President Joe Biden was “stunned, outraged and deeply saddened” by the murder. “His vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific will endure,” he said. “He was a champion of the friendship between our people. The United States stands with Japan in this moment of grief.” Biden added, “This is a tragedy for Japan and for all who knew him,” he added. “Even at the moment he was attacked, he was engaged

Board hosts online hate panel conference

BY LEAH WAXLER

Four leading Jewish women discussed the trials of combating bigotry on social media platforms at Westminster last week. The Board of Deputies hosted the online hate event. Board President Marie van der Zyl, Dame Margaret Hodge MP, HOPE not hate deputy director Jemma Levene and Nisa-Nashim interfaith group’s Laura Marks participated. Ms Marks spoke about how a climate of intimidation has prevented people, “particularly women”, getting involved in the interfaith space due to online abuse. “To deny that women are specifically and particularly targeted is ridiculous”, she said. Dame Margaret, co-chair of the APPG on British Jews, described being the subject

of 90,000 mentions online, mostly hostile and anonymous, in a two-month period. She said, with regards to social media companies, that “interest in removing [hate] is limited.” “No platform is going to regulate themselves, they need to have something to lose,” she commented. Noting the Online Safety Bill has 52 pages of proposed amendments, Dame Margarety spoke about “legal but harmful” language and extremists acting as journalists to avoid consequences for their actions. Dame Margaret stressed that if Ofcom receives sweeping regulatory powers which the Online Safety Bill is set to give them, the organisation will “need enough money and resources” to take control of new areas of scope. People engaging in online hate hiding behind anonymity must be prevented

in the work of democracy.” Biden noted that gun violence leaves a “deep scar” on communities affected by it. The Chinese embassy in Japan expressed “shock” at the murder and noted Abe’s attempts to improve relations between the nations. South Korean president Yoon Suk-Yeol condemned “an unforgivable act of crime”. He noted, “An act of terrorism during an election is a brutal attack against the very foundation of democracy. It is utterly unacceptable.“ Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen said the international community had lost an “important leader”. He added, “Taiwan and Japan are both democratic countries with the rule of law, our government severely condemns violent and illegal acts.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the attack was a “brutal and cowardly murder” of a “great democrat and champion of the multilateral world order”. European Council President Charles Michel said Abe, was “a true friend” and “fierce defender” of democratic values. Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised Abe’s “global leadership through unchartered times”. German chancellor Olaf Scholz said his country stood by Japan in difficult hours, French president Emmanuel Macron said Abe was a “great” prime minister.

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi announced a national day of mourning in India as a mark of “deep respect”. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder, recalled the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. “The senseless murder of former Prime Minister Abe is a reminder of the increased danger posed by extremists across the political spectrum,” he noted. “It should also serve as a wakeup call for all nations to realise once and for all that terrorism, violence and hatred cannot be a solution to any of the problems we face collectively.” Lauder added, that Abe was a “lifelong champion” of Japanese democracy.

Ms van der Zyl, who chaired the panel, thanked participants for valuable contributions. She told the audience that a key Board mission was to combat antisemitism in all its forms. “Over the last 15 years in particular, along with the rise of social media platforms, there has been a surge of anti-Jewish hatred in the online space”, she said. “This is certainly not limited to anti-Jewish hate, though. The internet has brought

Sadly, little has changed since then.” The discussion took place at the Fringe of the International Ministerial Forum on Freedom of Religion and Belief at the QE2 conference centre.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid has told President Emmanuel Macron that Iran can threaten “world peace”. Israel’s new leader was in France last week on his first official trip since succeeding Naftali Bennett after MKs dissolved the Knesset. Israel is heading to the polls in November but Lapid has stressed the coalition will continue to function and stated after taking office that Iran is Israel’s “gravest threat”. Lapid was forthright in his remarks about Iran regarding the nuclear deal. Poor result for London OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

14 months ago, in a blatant demonstration of Jew-hate, a number of people drove down from Bradford in cars emblazoned with Palestinian flags. The cars which had loudspeakers attached, drove through Jewish areas and using the loudspeaker one of the people in the car called for Jewish women to be raped. There was justifiably significant outrage at this appalling incident and in view of the video evidence available we all expected swift progress with prosecutions. Sadly, this has not been the case. In fact, the opposite. On Tuesday of this week the following was reported: “The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told Wood Green Crown Court that charges have been dropped against Asif Ali, 26 and Adil Mota, 27. Both men had travelled from Blackburn in the convoy that drove through London on 16 May 2021. The CPS is still set to move ahead with its case against two other men also from Blackburn, Mohammed Iftikhar Hanif, 28, and Jawaad Hussain, 25 on charges of “using

threatening, abusive or insulting words, or behaviour, with intent, likely to stir up racial hatred”. Whilst the news that the CPS are dropping charges against two of the four people allegedly involved in the incident, is bad enough, but what is so much worse is the delay. How can it be that it takes 14 months to get to this point? There are so many issues involved here and the one that stands out head and shoulders above the rest is that when it comes to crimes against Jews, we are second class victims. If the convoy had targeted any minority other than Jews, it is inconceivable that charges and subsequent prosecution

would have taken this long. So again, why has it taken the authorities in London so long to get to this stage? One explanation is lack of political will. Whilst the Government has been robust on dealing with antisemitism, London has not. This week London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan met with an American Congresswoman - Ilhan Omar. Ms Omar has a long history of accusations of antisemitism and particularly vile comments about Israel. On one occasion she said “Israel has hypnotised the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” Ms Omar is clearly not a woman of inclusivity and certainly not someone who has any

If the Mayor of London is happy to endorse the activities of a hate promoter such as Ms Omar, then it is little wonder he has no great interest in pushing the police or the CPS to take any swift action. A poor result for London.

support for Jews, yet for reasons which pass understanding Sadiq Khan is clearly prepared to ignore this hatred and hostility. Instead he astonishingly said “from the lakes of Minnesota to the bright lights of London, we must stand firm in upholding progressive values of equality and inclusion in the face of those who seek to divide us”. “Evil doings of Israel…” is hardly the language of someone promoting equality and inclusion but then when it comes to Jews, they matter less. Which in turn brings us back to the delay in prosecution of those responsible for the hate convoy of May of last year. If the Mayor of London is happy to endorse the activities of a hate promoter such as Ms Omar, then it is little wonder he has no great interest in pushing the police or the CPS to take any swift action. A poor result for London.

Lead 4h After this fairly simple auction, West led the four of hearts (low from odd in partner’s suit) to dummy’s queen and East’s ace. As there was no chance of stopping a heart ruff in dummy, East exited with a heart to dummy’s king. The success or failure of the contract seemed to depend on the location of the ace of diamonds. However declarer found another option to give him an extra chance. After cashing the ace of trumps, he played a club to the ace and another club. East won the trick with the queen of clubs and got off play with his remaining trump. Declarer won in dummy with the nine of spades and led the eight of clubs. When the king of clubs appeared, declarer ruffed it and had a tenth trick that did not depend on who held the ace of diamonds. Declarer took five trump tricks, one heart, one heart ruff, one diamond and two clubs.

Only an initial diamond lead defeats the contract. Declarer can even foil a low diamond shift from East by leading clubs from the dummy to deny East the opportunity to unblock a club honour (declarer ducks), as he could do if declarer starts clubs by leading the ace from hand. In the latter case, declarer would have to either allow West to gain the lead in clubs or for West to guard the suit by covering West’s ten of clubs with dummy’s jack.

Ice, snow… Artwork! Not content with completing a five-day 270km Lapland challenge in April, longterm Chai supporter and avid challenger Coby Bull hosted ‘Lapland by Sled’ - an Art Exhibition at Chai’s flagship centre in Hendon on Sunday 10th July. The exhibition showcased over 40 curated and framed black and white prints of images that Coby shot himself whilst on the challenge. Each specially selected image told a story from his arduous and deeply personal challenge. From the minus 20 degrees to the treacherous ice and snow that makes up the winter landscape of Lapland. Over 80 guests attended the art exhibition which helped push the grand total raised to just over £23,000 which will go towards Chai’s vital services. Coby explains: “this was one of the most gruelling challenges of my life. I crossed Lapland by Sled in honour of my grandmother Daniele who is currently suffering with cancer. I never expected to raise as much money as I did for such a worthy cause.” Danni Blumenblatt, Chai’s Community & Corporate Fundraiser said: “It was wonderful to work with Coby on his fantastic fundraiser. Chief Rabbi, Simon Hayes Barnet shul chairman and the Landaus

This week, over 100 people attended a Cricket for Cancer Care breakfast in aid of Chai Cancer Care and the Ruth Strauss Foundation. The event was generously hosted and sponsored by law firm BDB Pitmans, with renowned broadcaster and writer, Giles Coren, in conversation with England cricket legend, Sir Andrew Strauss. Strauss and Coren discussed a variety of topics ranging from leadership, the future of women’s cricket and what drove him to setting up the foundation in his wife’s memory. “In 2017, we went through the absolute horror and shock that Ruth had a) cancer;

b) non-smoking lung cancer: and c) it was stage 4. It was hugely confronting for me and my sons, Sam and Luca. My response was to concentrate on living. Ruth’s was to say, “I can’t concentrate on living unless I know you and the boys are taken care of.”” Speaking at the event, Louise Hager, Chairman of Chai Cancer Care, commented, “There is significant synergy and many shared aims between Chai Cancer Care and the Ruth Strauss Foundation. Both were established in response to personal painful experience of what it means to live with the impact of a cancer diagnosis, and both were founded to fill an unmet need.”

JWA Charity Climb in the Lake District!

Barnet United Synagogue Rabbi Dr Samuel Landau and his wife Rebbetzen Ma’ayan Shoshana Landau celebrated their induction by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis on Sunday, July 3. The ceremony was three years behind schedule. The rabbinic couple had been selected in early 2019, but couldn’t join Barnet until their duties in Israel had been completed. They landed in the UK the week the Covid lockdown was imposed, and the shul had to close. For the first year, Barnet was a shul with no rabbi, and from then on, the Landaus were a rabbinic couple with no shul! Guests at the induction included Michael Goldstein President of the US, Theresa Villiers Chipping Barnet MP, Councillor Nagus Narenthira Deputy Mayor, and local clergy and rabbonim, as well as shul members, some 250 people in all. Rabbi Samuel Landau, previously rabbi of Kingston, is a clinical psychologist in the NHS with a private practice. Rebbetzen Shoshana Landau is one of the first ten graduates of the Chief Rabbi’s Ma’ayan Programme which is 18 months of learning and training to become

a high-level educator for the community. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a fabulous spread of champagne, sandwiches, cake, and ice cream. The Landaus are young, energetic, enormously extrovert and full of fresh ideas. They have introduced innovations, many aimed at the youngsters, and some partly forced on them by Covid, for example Zoom services and shiurim.

Sarah and Mya Anderson

Sarah and Mya Anderson (aged 12), a mother and daughter fundraising team have climbed Helvellyn mountain in the Lake District as part of their Bnei mitzvah charity challenge. They completed a two day hike up the mountain from the 1st-3rd July and the summit is an incredible 2,572 feet high! After 16 hours of climbing, they, with other parents and children, reached the peak of the summit despite difficult weather conditions. A huge achievement and they managed to raise over £650 for Jewish

Women’s Aid! Sarah said, “when we decided to be part of this challenge, we needed to choose a charity to raise money for and we decided on Jewish Women’s Aid. JWA carry out incredible work to support women and children who have experienced domestic and sexual abuse as well as educating secondary school children on the importance of respect and consent. Huge thanks to Matt, Natalie, Sarah and the team of volunteers for making our charity challenge possible for us”.

Jnetics as the only cross-communal organisation in the UK, exists with the simple aim to prevent Jewish Genetic disorders from occurring within the Jewish community. Thier aim is to screen all young people in the community before they have families to ensure no more Jewish children are born with the Jewish genetic disorders we screen for. Jnetics focuses on genetic conditions that, though not exclusively Jewish, are of higher prevalence to people of Jewish ancestry. They provide education and accessible carrier screening to all young Jewish adults. Their hope is that genetic screening becomes standard practice, as it has been overseas for decades, thereby preventing these conditions and saving a countless number of lives. This month, Jnetics is delighted to introduce to the community “Diving into our Gene Pool” an ongoing lecture series on all things DNA, Genes, Assisted reproductive technologies, ethics and regulations. Bimonthly, Jnetics will introduce a new topic of conversation and present a leading

expert in the field to discuss and explore to each topic. “The main objective of this series is to introduce our community to important and valuable information that will allow for informed decisions to be made”. Nicole Gordon, Jnetics CEO said, “Each speaker will introduce a new topic and explain and allow for questions to be asked . “At Jnetics we believe that knowledge is power and as such we want to be able to give access to this knowledge to everyone who could benefit from it”. Nicole added. “The first lecture in the series will be from Julia Chain, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and is definitely one not to be missed” Guila Vaz Mouyal,Jnetics Scientific Advisor said. Jami presents leading barrister at first in-person event since pandemic

CST recently held a very successful training course for over 40 Haredi community members from Stamford Hill. The participants all did a 6 week (3 hours per week) security awareness course with self-defence training that we designed specially to fit the requirements of the Stamford Hill community. Rather than CST’s usual courses which are based around security officers standing at a location doing security, this course was designed to address what to do in your community if something happens on the street or at a location that you need to respond to. The course included an ACT awareness

training session provided by the Metropolitan Police and delivered by a police officer, after which the participants were certified by both CST and the police. The passing out ceremony at the end of the course was attended by Superintendent Andy Port from Central East BCU (Hackney and Tower Hamlets) and Acting Chief Inspector Greg Feldman of the Met Police Protective Security Operation (PSO). Andy Port gave a speech to the trainees in which he emphasised the police’s commitment to the security of all communities and explained how much he cares about our community.

Lord Pannick QC at the Business Breakfast 2022

Mental health charity Jami was delighted to introduce Lord Pannick QC at its first in-person event since before the pandemic. The inaugural legal breakfast was hosted by Adam Dawson, Jami’s chair of trustees and a barrister himself , at 9 Gough Chambers in the City of London. Guests working in the law industry heard from Baron Pannick of Radlett about his exciting career as a QC and crossbencher in the House of Lords and about the rise in mental health issues among people in the legal profession, caused by the pressures of increasing workloads and sometimes the harmful influence of social media. Described by Dawson as “the outstanding lawyer of his generation”, Lord Pannick QC has been involved in many of the seminal cases of the past 40 years, including representing Gina Miller, the woman who successfully fought to give Parliament a say in triggering Article 50 –the exit clause that severed the UK’s ties with the EU as part of Brexit. The audience were also enthralled by the story of Jess Harris, a peer support worker for Jami, who described how the charity

supported, transformed and saved her life after she was diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder and found herself unemployed and homeless. She said: “When I first met Jami, my life was at the lowest place I had ever been.” However, following personalised one-to-one support with a Jami social worker, ongoing support to return to college and retrain, volunteering opportunities, and the chance to use her experience to support countless people on their own mental health journeys, Jess told guests: “I’m a long way from the Jess who Jami first met seven years ago.” Now with a permanent job, a new home with her life partner, a full social life and the puppy of her dreams, Jess announced: “These days I’m happy. Still anxious but happy, but I’m OK with that.” And she gave credit to Jami for this turnaround in her life. “I owe a lot of my success to Jami,” she added. “And the continued and limitless support I received throughout those years.” If you need support or are supporting someone who needs help, visit jamiuk. org/get-support/ or contact 020 8458 2223

The Day was a huge success with £25,000 raised for the beneficiary charities, Manna UK, Camp Simcha and The Malki Foundation. The Day Convenor, Michael Foreman said “We once again had a sell-out field and magnificent day at the new venue. Congratulations to the winners Matthew Plax, Paul Belchak, Mitchell Brand and Matthew Geey, seen with Sandra Teper. We are delighted that we have been able to help the charities who have gone through such a torrid time. We would like to give special thanks to Jeff Maze and Jon Shapiro who are stepping down from the committee after 17 years of

Gaby Blauer from Manna, the UK arm of Meir Panim, spoke about the food support they give to families in Israel and in one example how they were supporting the son of a mother who was suffering from cancer. Geoff Hartnell from the Malki Foundation explained how the charity was set up in memory of Malki Roth who was murdered in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem in 2001. The charity now supports seriously ill children in their own homes with therapists and supplies essential equipment so that the child can remain with their family in their own home.

One of the best ways of easing the burden when holding a dinner party is to use desserts that you can make in advance and freeze, ready to be pulled out just when you need them, with no last panics or rushing to the shops. Ice cream, sorbets, semi-freddo, sundaes are naturally the most popular choices for frozen desserts, but here are some variations on a theme that you might like to make. • Baked Alaska, one of my signature recipes. A base of crushed chocolate biscuits, topped with ice cream and then pipped meringue covers the ice cream. Freeze and then bake for 7 minutes. It is a real showstopper. • Avocado ice cream, a little different but something delicious for your vegan friends. Using smashed avocado, coconut milk, maple syrup, ripe bananas. Combine together and transfer to a lined loaf tin. Freeze for 4 hours. • Roulade base. This is a sponge base mixture. Once it is has cooled spread whipped cream/ non dairy options work too like ‘cream cheese’, soya cream. Spread inside the cooled sponge, roll up and freeze. • Ice cream sandwiches. You can make your own biscuits and fill with spreadable ice cream and then re freeze. Or use bought biscuits – Oreo’s work well,

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

separate them apart, add the filling to the slightly defrosted ice cream. Mix and assemble. Return to the freezer to set and take out 5 minutes before serving. • If kids are involved, make your own Lolly pops. Add a stick to an open pot of small yoghurt such as Petit Filous, freeze and then invert. • Make a biscuit base using crushed biscuits and melted margarine that is very often used for cheesecakes. I like to bake this for 15 minutes at 200C. Freeze this and then add your topping of choice. Ice cream, yogurt, whipped cream, or nut butter, using your favourite like almond, pecan butter mix with yogurt. All can be frozen. Defrost for 10 minutes and if you wish – add fresh, dried fruit or chopped roasted nuts. Recipe above : Individual Baked Alaska

BY ZARA NEWMAN, LEAD FOR DEVELOPMENT AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT, JCOMMERCE.

The non-stop talk on the street about ‘The Cost of living crisis’ is an important topic and something that needs addressing, with inflation running at record levels and heading fast for the 11% mark. But what of the impact this is having on the average small business? Businesses are enduring the perfect storm, having been battered by Brexit, the Pandemic and now the war in Ukraine. According to the Federation of Small Business (FSB) 78% of their members report that costs are rising, with outgoings at their highest levels in almost 10 years, largely due to the eye-watering price rises of fuel and utilities. Since the former is the bread and butter of product- based businesses to distribute their goods and the latter impacts on manufacturing, the adverse affect of spiralling costs on businesses is almost unquantifiable. Rather than acting like a deer in headlights with nowhere to turn, perhaps

Rising costs of being in business

14 JULY 2022

it makes sense for businesses to ‘batten down the hatches’ in order to weather the latest financial storm and survive. The best place to start is to be on top of all your outgoings. Whilst this might seem like an obvious no-brainer, not only would you be surprised how many businesses don’t have an accurate handle of their expenses, even for those that do, carrying out regular audits of outgoings, is a good way to pinpoint expenses that are no longer fundamental to the business at any particular time, or can highlight where cuts can be made. Look for opportunities to save in all areas of the business and don’t underestimate how helpful even small savings can be. For instance, if you haven’t yet done so (to please the green brigade) go paperless, saving on both the cost of paper and printing, with the added bonus of making the office more streamlined and efficient. Another idea is to research and consider bundled services that include phone, internet and web hosting amongst others; similarly leasing equipment could help manage cash flow better and save on large capital costs and maintenance. Since the pandemic, most companies have realised that traditional employee expenses – such as business lunches and travel – are largely superfluous to the core functions of their work. See if any further savings can be made by setting guidelines and activating pre-set limits for employees. Make sure your employee expense policy is transparent – as a small businesses owner it is entirely up to you to decide what expenses make sense for the company’s ideals and goals. On the flip side of the coin, as the public sector is currently calling for inflation busting wage increases so as not to be worse off financially, your employees may want to follow suit. Whilst increased salaries would have to be decided on a case-by-case basis, a good idea would be to attach any wage rises to improved performance or increased responsibilities. So what is left you may ask? Well here it is worth exploring the sacrosanct areas of asking suppliers to share the burden and/or passing on costs to customers. For the former, although they are in the same boat as you with squeezed margins and escalating costs, there is no harm in benchmarking your suppliers constantly to check on quality and where overheads can be cut, as well as persistently asking for discounts. An open and honest communication is required here and it is also worthwhile mentioning what is good for you (selling more to customers at competitive prices) is good for them (more wholesale business) And what of passing on costs to customers - something all businesses

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

intrinsically feel like slamming the emergency brakes on when contemplating such action? Clearly there comes a point when passing on increased costs to clients and customers can no longer be avoided and profit margins have to be reviewed. Resist the urge to be a martyr and do put in place processes to increase prices as needed to maintain adequate profit margins. You would be surprised at how resilient and tolerant to price increases customers can be; consistently under-pricing will mean you no longer have a viable business model and perhaps they would prefer that your product is available and support you through the tough times. Alternately, customers may be keen to start a project now or buy goods, in order to protect against any future upcoming price rises. In short, everything is on the table. Perseverance and resilience are the order of the day and hopefully the economic turbulence of the last 3-5 years will soon be a distant memory.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IS IT G-D’S FAULT OR MINE?

FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE

Dear Rabbi I have been married for twenty-five years. I would say that most of the early years were happy but the past five years have become increasingly more difficult. Is this a nisoyon from Above to test my resilience? Does G-d make marriages difficult to test human resolve? I like to think I am a good husband but my wife complains that I am not the same anymore. Michael

Dear Rabbi I am a mother of three children and two grandchildren. My son-in-law never had a Jewish education and wants to send his kids to a non-Jewish school. I told him doing so could mean the end of the Jewish line for those kids and that he has to have faith in and look to protect their Jewish future. He replied that it is hogwash and that at the current rate of intermarriage and assimilation, there isn’t much of a Jewish future to look forward to. What do I say to that? Hadasah

Dear Michael I think it has a lot less to do with G-d and a lot more to do with you – or both of you. I’m reminded of what my grandfather used to say: “Before marriage he’ll walk to the other end of the world for you. After marriage he won’t even walk to the local grocery store.” Inasmuch as every marriage takes two to tango, you need to focus on your own behaviour and ask yourself whether something about you has changed. Are you paying the same attention to detail? And if this has been going on for five years, why did you wait till now to address it? Did you think it was all just going to correct itself? Five years is a long time to be living in a state of unhappiness. You need to address the issues now, rather than assuming this is just your Divine calling, or something absurd like that. G-d intended for man and woman to work together in harmony. Don’t go blaming Him. That in itself smacks of shirking responsibility and that could be the starting point of your problems.

Dear Hadasah Share with him the following: What the Bluzhever Rebbe, Reb Yisroel Spira, went through during the Holocaust was mindboggling. The Nazis murdered his wife, his only daughter, his entire family, almost all of his hundreds of Chassidim. After the War, it took a lot of courage for survivors to remarry. But after his liberation from Bergen Belsen, somebody suggested a match to the Bluzhever Rebbe, a widow who had survived, amazingly enough, with her 4 children. And that woman, named Bronya, became the Bluzhever Rebbetzin. Years later, somebody asked the Rebbe how he knew, despite everything he had gone through, that he wanted to marry his Rebbetzin Bronya. And the Bluzhever Rebbe shared the following extraordinary story. At one point, when the Rebbe was in Bergen Belsen, he went to the camp officials to request permission to bake matzos. And,

unexpectedly, they responded, “OK...but whoever wants to make the matzos with you has to write down their name, and we’ll submit the request to Berlin.” Most of the Jews, of course, didn’t put their names down on the request, because they figured writing their names was as good as writing their own obituaries. But the Rebbe said, “Look, we don’t have anything to lose. We’re going to die anyway...” So the Rebbe and 4 other men wrote their names down on the request to make matzos. And they submitted it. But right away they regretted their decision. They feared their request was the same as calling out to the Nazis, “Hey there, please kill us!” But a few weeks later, the camp officials returned and announced, “OK, who are the five people who said they want to make matzos? Come with us...” Those 5 men, thinking those were their last moments on earth, said goodbye to their friends. But, instead of killing them, the camp officials informed them that their request had been approved. So then the question was, who would get to eat from the matzos? There were only a few small matzos and tens of thousands of Jews in Bergen Belsen. And then a mother of 4 children stepped forward and said, “Could you please break off small pieces of the matza for my children?” The other people there argued, “But your children are still small, they aren’t obligated yet to eat matzah.” But she answered them, “My children are the next generation. They have to know what matzah is. They are the future of the Jewish

people. So the Rebbe gave them matzah. So why did the Rebbe decide to marry that mother of 4 children after the War? The Rebbe later explained, “Nobody in Bergen Belsen thought about the next minute. You didn’t think about the next day, the next week. Survival was second to second. “And here is this woman who is thinking she’s going to survive? And that there’s going to be a next generation? “And I knew that if this woman had that kind of courage, if she was so connected with the story of Passover that she believed

we would experience our own personal Exodus from Bergen Belsen, then that was the woman I would marry.” The Rebbe and his Rebbetzin, who lived until 99 and 94, didn’t have any more children after the war, but the Rebbe raised Rebbetzin Bronya’s 4 children as his own. And the Bluzhever Rebbes today are those children who ate matzah in Bergen Belsen, in the merit of their mother’s astonishing determination and faith. Keep fighting for their Jewish education or at least determine a compromise of sorts, but their Jewish future is not negotiable.

Donkeygate BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

A lot was at stake. We were perched to enter the promised land, launch Jewish history, and assemble the kingdom of G-d. Only two men stood in our way: a renowned but eccentric wizard and a frightened but determined king, colluded to cancel our date with destiny. The Bilam saga is an epic tale of Jewish history, human prophecy and divine providence. Everything is at stake in this crucial and suspenseful faceoff between sorcery and faith. This is all a very serious issue. Except, of course, for one absurdly hilarious conversation between a distinguished prophet and his chatty donkey. This slapstick exchange between man and mule certainly breaks the ice and provides some comic relief. Additionally, this dialogue between Bilam and the beast is satiric: a presumptuous prophet who “observes the future”, could not even match the sight of his own donkey. Bilam, an eloquent orator is silenced by a moral lecture from his smoothtongued donkey. All of Bilam’s preconceptions come crashing down. Humiliated, he realizes that his prophetic powers and his rhetorical skills are each divinely delivered. The great and famous Bilam will only see what Hashem allows him to, and can only speak the word of G-d. Yet there is an additional message, beyond the obvious. The donkey episode doesn’t just mock Bilam it also instructs him. The talking donkey is a warning flare, signaling that his scheme will fail. Bilam walks away from donkey-gate with humility, but he should also have recognized his own futility in confronting the Jewish nation.

THE BILAM GAMBLE

Bilam was a wise historian who scrutinized the past and examined the future. How was he so easily duped into this folly? Hadn’t Hashem performed countless miracles for us during our departure from Egypt, and throughout our desert journey? How did Bilam believe he could defeat a people who had proven invulnerable to tyrants and immune to the harsh desert? What was he thinking? Bilam wasn’t mad. He conceded that Hashem had selected the Jewish people and had paved a supernatural path of miracles through the desert. However, those dusty miracles occurred over thirty-eight years earlier, to a different generation and at a very different stage of history. A lot of desert sand separated those heady days of joy from the current struggles of a new generation looking for doorway to enter the land of Israel. Bilam wagered that the Jews were no longer chosen. After maddening betrayals and infuriating mutinies, Hashem had discarded us, condemning us to nomadic wandering and to silent death. Currently, the Jews were just like “any other nation, and could be defeated. Bilam was the first Christian, the

first to declare Hashem’s abandonment of the Jews. Maybe, the chosen people had become un-chosen and were now susceptible to his supernatural spell.

SEARCHING FOR DIVINE DISPLEASURE

Bilam was desperate to detect even a hint of divine fury. He searched for any “daylight” between Hashem and His people, to verify his assumptions and launch his attack. Any slight decline in the love between Hashem and His people would have corroborated his audacious belief that Hashem no longer chose our nation. Despite Bilam’s best efforts, he could not detect any dissonance: “He did not discern iniquity in Ya’akov nor did He detect perversion in Yisrael”. Recognizing the eternal divine love, which was immune to human failure, Bilam capitulated: how shall I curse, whom G-d has not cursed?”. Once he realized that Hashem hadn’t abandoned His chosen people, Bilam surrenders.

LOYALTY

Had he only listened to his knowledgeable donkey, Bilam might have saved himself time and heartache. His hapless donkey was having an off day. It had wandered off course, crushed Bilam’s leg and, finally, collapsed from exhaustion. This four-legged “professor” then tutored Bilam about the trait of loyalty. After years of loyal service, a trusted donkey deserved compassion and forbearance, not rage and violence. Loyalty bonds men to men, men to their animals, and, of course, Hashem to His chosen people. We ourselves, had a few bad “days” in the desert, but Hashem wasn’t going anywhere. We ourselves, may have wandered off our course but Hashem didn’t abandon us. We ourselves, may have occasionally collapsed into a state of panicked indifference, but Hashem remained loyal to His covenant. The bonds of loyalty welded us to Hashem, and we remained invincible. Bilam’s gamble failed. Had Bilam only listened to his donkey and appreciated the value of loyalty, he would have suspended his plans to attack us earlier. He didn’t fully appreciate the bonds of loyalty between us and Hashem.

A CRISIS OF LOYALTY

Loyalty sits at the core of any long-term relationship. Every relationship has high points and low points, moments of harmony and moments of frustration and even betrayal. Loyalty reinforces our relationships, allowing them to outlast disappointment and frustration. Without allegiance and trust, relationships are brittle. Relationships of loyalty are always built to last. We live in a dizzying world of rapid change and constant movement. We ricochet from “situation to situation” too quickly to establish bonds of loyalty. Students often seek my professional guidance. Recently I have

declined, because any professional advice I offer is obsolete. The job market of 2022 has completely shifted from where it was twenty years ago. In the past, employment choices were major life decisions. Today the average span of employment is only four years. People hardly meet their co-workers and employers before they move on. Zoom isn’t helping matters. The average length of a marriage is only slightly longer, lasting eight years. Friendships have shifted from personal interactions to virtual reality, making them less adhesive. It is much easier to unfriend someone on Facebook or ghost them on whatsapp, than it is to discontinue an actual friendship. Without long-term marriage, long-term employment, and actual live friendships, loyalty fades. As actual loyalty begins to wither, modern culture offers artificial replacements. Corporations convert financial transactions into “emotional experiences” to generate customer loyalty and insure greater profit. Airlines incentivize our travel with extra perks to assure flyer’s loyalty. We invest our loyalties in sports teams, celebrities and

clothing brands. All of these hollow loyalties target either objects or faceless organizations, rather than actual people. None of them teach us about real relationships or about devotion to others. Loyalty is also the scaffolding which braces religious experience. Ideally, religious experience is driven by passion, emotion and spirituality. However, humans are unpredictable and erratic, and any religious experience based solely upon an emotional state will be very wobbly. Loyalty to Hashem stabilizes our relationship with Him, steadying our commitment to Him even when religious passions run weak. In a world of diminishing loyalty, religious commitment is also tottering. The donkey speaks to us all. He calls us to greater loyalty. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/ Gush, a hesder yeshiva. Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L

Saddle up! BY RABBI JUDAH MISCHEL

The legendary Rosh Yeshiva and author, Rav Shimshon Pincus zt”l, was a talmid chacham, ba’al avodah and tzaddik, who served as Chief Rabbi in the Negev city of Ofakim with self-sacrifice and love. A talmid of Rav Pincus suffered from an acute dental condition. Numerous infections had caused him to lose teeth and painful gum inflammation. Not wanting to trouble anyone, the young married man, an avreich in Ofakim, tried to hide his condition and downplayed the perpetual discomfort he was experiencing. One day his wife approached Rav Pincus and shared her husband’s suffering with the rav. He was unable to chew and was in such pain that he could barely sleep. Exhausted and racked with pain, he was losing weight dangerously. Without hesitation, Rav Pincus excused himself and returned a few minutes later with several thousand shekel. He then spent some time making phone calls to various contacts to help the avreich’s wife find an oral surgeon

who could help. The Pincus family lived very modestly and the incident took place at a particularly difficult time with regard to their parnassa. A friend of the avreich who was aware of the situation asked the rav how he could give away such a large sum of money when he himself was struggling to cover his growing family’s needs. Rav Pincus looked quizzically at the talmid for a moment, and replied with a wide smile and a wave of his hand. “This avreich can’t sleep! He can’t eat… Tell me, if it was my son, and he needed emergency dental work, would you understand the expense? What’s the difference if it’s my son, your son, or the Ribbono Shel Olam’s son?” “And Bilam rose in the morning and saddled his donkey…” (Bamidbar 22:21) Our parasha describes how Balak, king of Moav, contracts the evil prophet, the respected and powerful sorcerer Bilam, to curse Am Yisrael. Rashi points out an important lesson in the alacrity with which Bilam responds to the invitation: “From

here we learn that hate causes a disregard for the standard of dignified conduct, for Bilam saddled his donkey by himself.” As a result of his intense, irrational hatred of Jews, Bilam didn’t wait for his servants, and rushed to saddle his donkey on his own, relishing the opportunity to embark on this mission to cause harm to Am Yisrael. Rashi continues by juxtaposing Bilam’s actions with Avraham Avinu’s at the Akeidah: “Hakadosh Baruch Hu said (to Bilam), ‘Rasha, wicked one! Their father Avraham has already preceded you, as the passuk says: Avraham arose in the morning and saddled his donkey (Bereishit 22:3).’” When Avraham Avinu rose early in the morning, eager and prepared to fulfill Hashem’s will at the Akeidah, he was ‘alacritous to perform the commandment’. This, the Gemara explains (Sanhedrin 105b, Rashi), is an example of how “love negates the standard conduct of those of prominence.” In this case, Avraham Avinu’s passionate dedication and love for

Hashem negated his normal conduct, and he rushed to bind his son on an altar. This coming week begins the period of bein haMetzarim, when our focus intensifies on making a tikkun for the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash. It is a time for us to consider our dedication to both our brothers and sisters, as well as our passion and fervor in mitzvah observance. Perhaps it is a time as well for us l’kalkeil shura, ‘to break the rules of conduct’ in our Ahavat Yisrael and go beyond our typical standards of giving and doing on behalf of others. May we learn from the opposite examples of Balak, and lehavdil, Avraham Avinu – as well as the holy actions of Rav Pincus zt”l – and may we do whatever it takes to help others and fulfill Hashem’s will. Rabbi Judah Mischel is Executive Director of Camp HASC, and Mashpiah of OU-NCSY. He is a member of Mizrachi’s Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/ speakers).

Parshat Balak:

How Could Bilaam be a Prophet? BY GAVRIEL COHN

Bilaam’s prophetic powers are often taken for granted. Bilaam was a flawed, even depraved individual but G-d nevertheless “bestowed His presence upon him.” Despite his conceited character and immoral behaviour, Bilaam was gifted by G-d, for whatever reason, with the ability to “bless and curse” and to divine the future. Such is the view of many thinkers (Rashi; Ramban; Maharal). Yet, according to the Rambam, only a moral, good person can attain prophecy. Prophecy is a deep knowledge of G-d and His creation, a perception of reality so bright and clear. Only a balanced, moral, and elevated human being can become a prophet, improving his character and then intellect to be able to contemplate ever more transcendent matters. As the Rambam explains, “Prophecy is bestowed only upon a very wise sage of a strong character who is not overcome by

his natural inclinations but rather overcomes them” (Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah, chapter 7). Bilaam, in stark contrast to this, was a depraved, arrogant, and lustful individual (see Rambam’s Commentary on Pirkei Avot, chapter 5), and yet he attained a level of divine inspiration akin to some of the greatest Biblical figures (Guide for the Perplexed, end of Part II). How, according to the Rambam’s understanding of prophecy, that to attain prophecy one has to have a refined character, could Bilaam have had “the spirit of G-d rest upon him”? This is a difficult question, with no clear answers in the writings of the Rambam. However, the Rambam does mention that Bilaam only achieved this level of divine inspiration “when he was good” (Guide, end of Part II). Bilaam only experienced prophecy in those moments when he was inspired to refine himself and soar spiritual heights to “hear the words of G-d.” Indeed, “many prophets only prophesised at varying intervals, like flashes of lighting in the darkness of a long night” (Introduction, Guide for the

Perplexed; Scott Alexander). What though would have prompted Bilaam to “be good” and refine his character at those exact moments, attaining prophesy and blessing the Jewish People precisely when he did? Bilaam journeyed to curse the Jews and stopped at the edge of their vast encampment. He then stood and “gazed at this nation” before him. The Jewish travellers he saw in the distance were “established and imposing, like the surrounding mountains and hills, steadfastly perpetuating the peculiar lifestyle of their forefathers.” Bilaam was amazed by this “nation that dwells alone, not be reckoned among the nations.” They displayed modesty too in their dwellings. He then noticed how the Jewish tents were pitched in a perfect formation, four groups encircling the Sanctuary, all the tribes unique yet united. From another mountain peak, Bilaam then surveyed the Jewish People again, and remembered that this was a nation that despite terrible suffering and subjugation, had defiantly marched out of their centuries-old House of Slavery, completely untainted by the magic and

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

superstitions of Egypt, focused instead on their tabernacle. A people that had “raised itself like a lion.” In short, Bilaam was taken back this nation he saw. By watching the Jewish People from a distance he realised just how remarkable they were. Bilaam was inspired to “be good” and attain this level of divine inspiration, like sudden flashes of light. He then filled his prophetic parables with praises of the People. Despite his flawed character, in those moments of surveying the Jewish People, he worked on himself and achieved a level of prophecy. Throughout the ages, both Jews and Gentiles have also been inspired by the Jewish People, “a nation that sits alone and rises like a lion,” an “emblem of eternity” whose unique lifestyle lights up their dwellings.

Balak

Sidra Summary 3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 22:21-38

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEMIDBAR 22:2-12

Balak, the king of Moab, having seen that the Israelites defeated the Emorites, is afraid that they will plot against him. Balak sends emissaries to Midian, to Bilaam the son of Be’or, asking him to curse the Israelites. Bilaam tells Balak’s emissaries to stay the night, to give him time to see how G-d will instruct him. G-d appears to Bilaam at night and warns him not to travel to Moab to curse the Israelites, who are a blessed nation.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 22:13-20

Bilaam wakes up in the morning and tells Balak’s officers that he is unable to go with them, due to G-d’s warning. After they report back to Balak, he sends higher-ranking officers to persuade Bilaam. Bilaam repeats that he is bound by G-d’s word. G-d again appears to Bilaam at night, telling him that he has permission to go, but that he must do what He instructs him.

Bilaam saddles his donkey and travels with Balak’s officers. G-d is angered by Bilaam’s decision and sends an angel to impede him. The donkey sees the angel, who has a drawn sword in his hand. She deviates from the road to avoid the angel. Bilaam, unable to see the angel, hits the donkey. The angel positions himself between two parallel fences. When the donkey moves towards the wall, pressing Bilaam’s leg against it, Bilaam again hits her. The angel then places himself in a narrow part of the path, making it impossible for the donkey to circumvent him. She stops and crouches, causing Bilaam to get angry and hit her again. G-d “opens the mouth of the donkey”, who defends her actions. G-d now “uncovers Bilaam’s eyes” and he sees the angel. The angel chastises Bilaam, who admits his sin and suggests that he returns home. The angel responds that he can continue his journey but must not say anything other than what G-d tells him. Balak goes out to greet Bilaam on the border of Arnon.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 22:39-23:12

Bilaam and Balak go to a vantage point from where Bilaam can see the edge of the Israelite camp. Bilaam tells Balak to build him seven altars and give him seven bulls and rams to sacrifice. Balak complies and Bilaam sacrifices the animals. G-d appears to Bilaam and tells him what to say. Against his will, Bilaam

“G-d opened the mouth of the donkey and it said to Bilaam, ‘What have I done to you that you struck me these three times?’” (Bemidbar 22:28)

Balak takes Bilaam to a new location in the hope of a better result. Once again, Bilaam brings animal offerings. As before, G-d appears to Bilaam, who can only bless, not curse, the Israelites.

7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 24:14-25:9 Before leaving, Bilaam tells Balak that the Israelites could be vulnerable to licentious behaviour (Rashi). He then prophesies about future stages of their history. Bilaam and Balak go their separate ways. The Israelites settle in Shittim where the men are attracted to Moabite women, as well as towards worshipping the idol Pe’or. Pinchas, a grandson of Aharon, sees a public display of licentious behaviour and kills the culprit, Zimri from the tribe of Shimon, along with Kozbi, the Midianite princess.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 23:27-24:13

HAFTARAH

actually blesses the Israelites. Balak is incensed, yet Bilaam claims that he is unable to defy G-d’s command. Point to Consider: How do we see Bilaam trying to emulate the patriachs? (see Rashi to 23:4)

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 23:13-26

Balak and Bilaam go to a third location. After bringing the offerings to the altar, Bilaam sees the encampments of the Israelites and “the spirit of G-d rests upon him” so that he actually no longer wants to curse them (Rashi). Again Bilaam blesses Israel. Balak dismisses him.

The name Balak comes from a root that means to lick up or lay waste. King Balak was the son of Tzippor, king of the Moabites. Looking down at the Israelite camp he was apprehensive and said they were likely to lick up everything around, as an ox licks up the grass of the field. Bilam is from a root that means to swallow up; the name means “destroying the people”. As Bilam – a diviner – was regarded as a false prophet who misled others, his name appears in rabbinic literature as a symbol for Jesus though this was quite anachronistic. Christianity had a high opinion of Bilam (based on Num. 24:17). The rabbis were ambivalent about him. Though Pir’kei Avot calls him Bilam the Wicked (Avot 5:19) there was a view that he was as good a prophet for the gentiles

as Moses was for the Jews (Numbers Rabbah 20:1).

HITTING THE DONKEY

When Bilam got annoyed with his donkey he hit the animal (Num. 22:27). This reminds me of the time, years ago, when I was called upon to compose a prayer for the welfare of animals. I had the Bilam story in mind when I wrote, “Teach us to fulfil Your command in Scripture, ‘A righteous person knows the needs of his animal’ (Prov. 12:10)… Teach us to treat animals with kindness and concern, admonished by Bilam’s ass which rebuked its master.” G-d made human beings the pinnacle of His creation, giving man priority over

other creatures. Animals were placed at the service of man but had to be treated properly, for example being fed before their human masters. The messianic dream is that “the wolf shall lie down with the lamb and the leopard with the kid, and a little child shall lead them” (Isa.11:6-9).

SEEING ONLY THE GOOD

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev had a surpassing love for the people of Israel. He quoted a verse in this week’s reading, “He has seen no iniquity in Jacob, no perverseness in Israel” (Num. 23:21). Levi Yitzchak said, “That is how a good person should act, not seeing evil in others but constantly looking for things to praise”.

The prophet Micha describes the Messianic times that the ‘remnant of Yaakov’ will experience. He also recalls how G-d looked after the nation in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, including His thwarting of the evil plans of Balak and Bilaam. For him, the A-lmighty is the model to emulate: If the people of Israel sin, G-d doesn’t want to know. In His eyes they are good people, righteous, trying to do the right thing. We too should see only the good in others. This creates a problem, especially on Yom Kippur. How can we recite all those confessions of sins – “we have done wrong, we have spoken evil talk” – when G-d doesn’t want to know? The answer is that G-d is the judge, not us. We are afraid that we have sullied the good name of His people, and that He will say, “I have changed My mind about them!” We can only hope that He will find that our good deeds outweigh our transgressions. And high up on the list of good deeds is to be able to say, “We have tried at all times to judge others favourably”. Rabbi Raymond Apple was for many years Australia’s highest profile rabbi and the leading spokesman on Judaism. After serving congregations in London, Rabbi Apple was chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, for 32 years. He also held many public roles, particularly in the fields of chaplaincy, interfaith dialogue and Freemasonry, and is the recipient of several national and civic honours. Now retired, he lives in Jerusalem and blogs at http://www.oztorah.com

Balak Balak Word Search

King Balak, the newly appointed head of Moav was terrified of the Jews. They had just won a battle against two mighty kings -Sichon and Og. How could he win the Jews? He had a grand plan to hire a certain individual with the power of the tongue – Bil’am who was known to be able to bless or curse people. Balak sent messengers to Bil’am. Bil’am was able to communicate with Hashem, who warned him not to go, but eventually, Bil’am was allowed to go but informed that only what Hashem allowed him to express would be able to be said. Indeed Bil’am leaves on the journey with his donkey, but the donkey acts strangely on the journey and Bil’am gets injured and ends up hitting his donkey three times! The

donkey actually has been given the power of speech and tells Bil’am off for hitting him! Bil’am then realises that an angel is blocking the way and once the angel warns him to behave, it was time to continue. Eventually, Bil’am arrives at the hilltop and begins giving some awesome blessings to the Jewish people – some of which we are very familiar with, such as Mah Tovu. Balak is frustrated but Bil’am gives him a different idea of how to harm the Jews – get them to sin! Indeed this is what happened but at the end a big hero named Pinchas brought an end to the terrible plague that fell upon the Jews after they sinned. G-d protects us from our enemies, but we must be careful to do the right thing at all times!

Are you listening?

She looked at her watch and realised it was almost closing time. Where was everyone? Why had she not listened to her teacher and stayed with the group? She started to panic. She tried to run back the way she had come but she couldn’t remember which way it was!

“S

o” Hadassa said, chomping loudly on a packet of crisps. “Then Shloime just fell asleep. His face fell straight into his bowl of

spaghetti!” All her friends laughed as Hadassa demonstrated Shloime’s supper mishap from the previous night. Currently, they were sitting on a coach on their way to visit the Natural History Museum. Everyone was looking forward to a special day out of school. “Girls, please make sure not to make a mess on the bus.” Mrs Kaye frowned as she walked past. She stared pointedly at the bits of crisps littering the floor by the seat where Hadassa sat. The girls were only half-listening because at that moment the coach drove up to the museum. They all gasped in delight, thinking how grand and big it was. “Imagine if you lived there,” sighed Yocheved. They entered a large grand hall with a massive blue whale skeleton in the centre. “Girls, please remember to stick with your

group as you walk around the museum. This is a very big place and you do not want to get lost.” Mrs Kaye said severely. Hadassa barely heard her as she whispered and giggled at the skeleton with Yocheved and Rina. The girls split up into three groups and followed their teacher to different areas of the museum. “We are going to the volcanoes!” Liora said excitedly to Hadassa. “Sooo boring,” Hadassa replied. She was not interested. She carried on talking to Yocheved, even when the teacher told them

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

Suddenly, from around the corner Hadassa appeared. She was crying hard. All the girls ran and hugged her. “I’m so sorry,” she said to Mrs Kaye. “I will try much harder to listen in future.’ “We all will,” said Yocheved as she led her friend back to the coach. Hadassa was found and it was time to go home.

to be quiet. After a while of following the group feeling extremely bored, she noticed a narrow stone staircase that didn’t have any signs. Whilst the teacher had her back turned, Hadassa slipped away and went to have a look. It was amazing, she went down the stairs and entered a whole new gallery. There were all these interesting looking rocks of different colours and sizes. She wandered around for a while and then decided to move on. She found herself in an area with fossils. This seemed a bit boring and after a while she started to wonder where everyone else was.

Meanwhile in the dinosaur section, Hadassa’s group were getting fidgety. They were quite happy when Mrs Kaye said it was time to go home. Yocheved sidled over to Liora “Have you seen Hadassa?” “No, I thought she was with you,” replied Liora. “Oh no, I thought she was with you!” Yocheved looked scared. Liora ran to the teacher and said in a frightened voice “Hadassa is missing!” Mrs Kaye quickly counted the girls and was very worried when she realised Liora was right. She went straight to a security guard and started to explain the situation.

Dear Stephen What are the costs and delivery times like these days please for moving home UK to Israel? Mel Dear Mel At long last it looks as though prices are beginning to stabilise. We belong to a sea freight buying consortium called The Movers Trading Club (MTC) and we enter into contracts fixing sea freight shipping costs for up to a year at a time. Of course there are little increases caused by fuel and currency changes, but overall we can quote excellent all-inclusive, door to door rates and hold them for a bit longer than during the pandemic! And the current bonus is that the journey time between the UK and Israel has been reduced from 21 days to just 14 days which makes the logistics of the move so much easier. Allowing time to pack, load, deliver to the port, clear UK Customs, sea freight to Israel, clear Israeli Customs and deliver to your new residence, less than a month is now achievable for full containers! Even our groupage times have seriously improved. We are the largest movers of families from the UK to Israel and as such can offer similar fast journey times for small shipments within one of our groupage containers. These leave, on average, every two weeks and, at busy times (like now!) we can often offer immediate shipment. Do please call me when you are ready to plan your move. Stephen
