What creates the perfect moment? It’s lounging on pristine white-sand beaches enveloped by the bluest waters. It ’s luxurious sanctuaries made for romance at water’s edge, or directly over the water. It ’s shared delicious gourmet creations and craf ted cock tails. The per fec t moments are found in the details, an ar t that we’ve perfected for over 40 years with our Luxury Included ® Honeymoon. Engagement Ring I N S U R A N C E 10 1
Here’s the top three things you need to know to find a policy that works for you.
1.
Why You Need It
Chances are you’re proudly rocking your new ring every day, and the last thing you want is to be stuck with the cost if it gets lost, stolen or damaged. (Trust us: These things do happen.) Plus, the sentimental value alone is worth ensuring you can replace it with the exact style you love.
2.
How To Get It
The two most common ways to insure a ring are through specialized jewelry insurance or a traditional homeowners’ or renters’ policy or rider. Consider what level of coverage you need, and compare plans and deductibles to find the right policy for you. Also be sure to have a sales receipt or an appraisal for your ring in case you need to prove its value when applying for insurance or filing a claim.
3.
How Much It Costs
It can vary based on your location (some cities have a higher risk of theft), but on average the yearly cost of jewelry insurance is about 1 percent to 2 percent of the value of your ring. That’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
What Insurance Covers Jewelers Mutual
Why Jewelers Mutual? Jewelers Mutual has been insuring rings and other priceless pieces for over 100 years. A policy with them protects your ring from loss, damage and theft—even mysterious disappearances and during worldwide travel. And if you do need to replace your ring, you can work with any jeweler so you can be sure you’ll get a ring of the same quality as the original.

I always advise couples not to focus on the camera. Movement really helps shake the nerves, so I often capture them while walking, dancing and embracing on the wedding day. Once they’re comfortable, I start mixing in more portraits of them looking directly into the lens. @lynndunston

To be honest, I’m not the biggest lover of trends. I always feel that a classic, timeless wedding is the way to go. I look at my parents’ wedding album from 1964, and it still looks current almost six decades later because the whole aesthetic was classic. Trends have a way of making your wedding show its age—like those with blue leisure suits from the 1970s. Can you add fresh colors to your wedding? Sure! But don’t go so far into the realm of what’s hot that you lose a sense of timelessness. Your wedding images should be as lasting as your love. While we’re on the topic of trends, there is actually one fad I would love to see go away: the idea of nonconsumable wedding favors. Unless you can eat or drink it, wedding favors are worth skipping. I love seeing guests focus their budget elsewhere on things that make a greater impact on the guest experience. For our clients who love the idea of favors, we have the valet team place gifts in guests’ cars with a note that says, “So sweet of you to come! Please enjoy this sweet treat on your way home.” This is a nice way to enhance the guest experience without gifting a useless tchotchke.
An engagement gift is a wonderful way to celebrate a newly betrothed couple, but the absence of a registry can definitely make it more challenging. You can’t go wrong with a present that the couple can enjoy together. I’m currently loving experiential gifts for couples: A romantic cooking class, a weekend nature getaway or a surprise date-night subscription box are just a few ideas. But if you’re looking to keep things simple, the couple’s favorite bottle of wine with a sweet card is a perfectly appropriate gift option too. The to-be-weds are sure to appreciate your thoughtfulness in selecting something meaningful to celebrate their new season of life.

If you find that social media is becoming more stressful than helpful to your wedding planning, it may be time to limit your consumption. Set a onehour time limit or designate a single day of the week when you search social media for wedding ideas. It’s also wise to remember that everyone has different styles and perspectives. Don’t let opinions you hear online cloud your own thinking.

In addition to making accommodations for my own disability, it was important to me that the wedding be accessible to all of my guests and vendors. Part of that involved hiring both vendors with accessibility experience as well as disabled vendors. Our DJ had a disability and needed extra space for his music booth. If you have entertainment that you plan to place on a stage, it’s important to think through how easy it is to get onto the stage. As you interview potential vendors, ask about their experience as well as accommodations they might need. In the end, you want to find a vendor who is open to working with you and meeting your needs.

“Accessibility to me means that facilities consider all people and adapt to ensure guests can enjoy a place,” says Vanessa. “While planning, I had a hard time telling if venues were accessible, so we made sure to physically visit locations. Our venue was not fully accessible, so we made certain adjustments. Notably, we had our brother-in-law build a ramp to enable me to smoothly go over a step that was in the path of where I would be going down the aisle toward Erick to say our vows.”
H OW AC CESSI B L E A R E Y OU R VEN U E A N D RENTALS? When it comes to finding a venue, you want to book a place that will enable your guests to participate. Accessibility can inform other decisions too. What is the height of your guest-book table? If it’s too tall, wheelchair-bound guests won’t be able to write you notes. We had a lot of guests in wheelchairs at our wedding, so we made sure to rent a larger dance floor to give everyone space. At the tables, we removed chairs at the places of guests who were in wheelchairs. Even the amount of space between tables will impact the freedom that those with limited mobility feel during the wedding. Each of these decisions involved special planning based on the specific needs of our wedding. Also keep in mind the transportation to the venue. Having your ceremony and reception in one spot, instead of requiring travel between two locations, might be a way to make the day feel more accessible. Our bigger wedding was held at the University of

It’s also important to consider the style of food service you’re planning. Some details are small and simple—like reminding servers passing hors d’oeuvres to bend down as needed so guests in wheelchairs can easily reach the appetizers. And then on a larger scale, if you’re having a buffet instead of a seated dinner, wheelchair-bound guests may need extra assistance from servers. HO W AC C E S S I B LE ARE T H E R E S T R O O M S ? One question I had while wedding planning was how I would use the restroom. My planner helped me come up with the idea of making my dress have two parts. The skirt section had a slit down the back so it could be easily removed. I also made sure that our guests could visit the restroom.
During a site visit, check the paths to the restroom and look for steps, rocks, uneven ground or anything that would be hard to navigate with a walker or wheelchair. W H E RE ARE Y O U S E AT I N G D I SAB L ED G U E S T S ? Where people are seated can have a big impact on their ability to enjoy the wedding. You don’t want guests to feel stuck, so ensure the ceremony aisle and walkways throughout the venue are easy for them to maneuver. Also think about where you seat guests who are hard of hearing. They should be close to the speakers and, if you have one, in sight of a sign language interpreter.

Ultimately, in establishing what accommodations you need to make for a wedding, it really comes down to creating an openness between the couple and the vendors. You should feel empowered to have these discussions in advance, so you’ve covered all the bases when the wedding day comes along.

ikkieTutorials (whose real name is Nikkie de Jager) posted her first YouTube beauty tutorial in 2008, at the age of 14. Fourteen years later, she has 13.9 million subscribers, her own makeup line, Nimya, and a fiancé named Dylan she lovingly refers to as her “person until the end of time.” But it hasn’t all been lipstick and falsies. In January of 2020, Nikkie posted a video called “I’m Coming Out,” where she revealed she was trans after being blackmailed by someone who threatened to publicly expose her assigned sex at birth. In April of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic derailed her wedding planning (along with millions of other couples worldwide). That August, Nikkie and Dylan were robbed at gunpoint in their home in the Netherlands. Despite the adversity she has faced, Nikkie’s message—and presence—is overwhelmingly positive and inspiring. She’s looking forward to “living the bridal fantasy” and, like every nearlywed, can’t wait to make it official with the love of her life—in a stunning custom gown and flawless makeup, naturally. Here, she talks how coming out affected her relationship, her wedding plans and her top beauty tips.
him. I woke up that day and we had our game plan. I did my hair and makeup. I had this gorgeous orange-red dress on. And the entire day Dylan was in a great mood. And I remember that before we went to the restaurant, we went to get coffee and he did something with his phone that alarmed me, because he kept putting it away. And he’s never really secretive about stuff like that, so I was like, ‘What is this all of a sudden?’ But I just let it go. The closer we got to the dinner, the more anxious he became. As soon as we got to the dinner, he said, ‘Now let’s take that picture.’ So I see the staircase that we’ve seen online. I’m like, ‘That’s where we’re going to take the photo and I’m really going to kill this picture.’ So he walks up, he takes my photos, and after a while, I feel like we got it. And, he never says stuff like this, he goes, ‘Do you mind taking a picture of me?’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, Mr. Influencer!’ So we switched places, and I took his photo and he didn’t move for 10 shots. And I was like, ‘Give me some variety, baby.’ He had the same pose for every shot. And he says, ‘Can you turn around and grab that for me? I left something up there.’ When I turned back around, he was on one knee. And my favorite moment is that it started off with ‘Dear Nikkie,’ and then emotions took over and I couldn’t understand a word. And it ended with, ‘Do you want to be my wife?’ The first thing I said was, ‘Are you sure? Really, with me?’ And then after he insisted that, yes, he wanted me to be his wife, I said yes. I guess this restaurant sees a lot of engagements. So I’m on cloud nine, living my best life: ‘Oh my God, I’m engaged, I’m engaged, I’m engaged.’ Then the waiter comes over and I’m like, ‘Look, I just got engaged.’ And she literally says, with no emotion, ‘That’s great.’ And then, because we were in a cave, there was no phone connection. We couldn’t call or text anyone. So it was great to really celebrate that moment with each other, just the two of us. It’s a moment I’ll never forget. S B: I love that story and that your reaction was, ‘Me? Are you sure?’ NJ: I really said that! S B: You came out in a pretty public way. How did it affect your relationship? NJ: Oh my gosh. While my coming out was one of the scariest moments of my life, I had a couple of rocks surrounding me. And one of those people was Dylan. He was everything I hoped he would be for me in that period because he was super, super supportive. He was with me throughout every second. When I had to click publish on my coming-out video, it was a very scary moment, because you don’t know what the future will bring. He took my hand and looked me in the eyes and said, ‘You’re going to publish this. We’re going to be fine. You got this. Whatever happens happens, but know ››
WHILE COMING OUT WAS ONE OF THE SCARIEST MOMENTS OF MY LIFE, I HAD A COUPLE OF ROCKS SURROUNDING ME. AND ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WAS DYLAN.
S H ELLE Y B ROWN: When did you know that you wanted to marry Dylan? N I KKI E DE JAG ER: Dylan is such a great guy and a loving, caring person. I think we were in a relationship for, I don’t know, six months, and everything felt right. I’d never felt that comfortable with a person before. After my previous relationship, I put away the idea of marriage, because it wasn’t working out. I was like, ‘Okay, well, I’m never getting married.’ But then when I found Dylan, I was like, ‘Wait, this could be the one. This could be the one where it actually happens, and where I could have my happy ending.’ S B: Will you share your proposal story? NJ: Oh, yes. It’s a fun one. So Dylan and I went on vacation to Puglia in the south of Italy and we got this gorgeous hotel. It was just stunning—what dreams are made of. Whenever I go on a trip, I always try to get one perfect photo for the ’gram, as the life of an influencer goes. And there was this one restaurant inside of a cave. I don’t remember the name, but if you see a restaurant in a cave in Italy, it’s that one. And Dylan said, ‘Look at this place. It’s beautiful.’ I said, ‘Wow, I guess that’s my photo. That’s where I have to take it.’ The entire trip we had been talking about the photo I was going for. He was like, ‘Stand at the top of the stairs and pose as if you’re walking.’ He’s so invested—I love that about

that we have each other and it’ll be just fine.’ When he said that I was like, ‘This man is never leaving me, and I’m never leaving this man.’ I thought, ‘That’s my person. He is mine until the end of time.’ S B: That’s really amazing. Now that you’re planning your wedding, what beauty trends are you loving? NJ: This is my first and, hopefully last, wedding. I’m so excited to see how I make the bridal trends mine. As you can see [gestures to red lips] I love a bit of color. So there will be something colorful, but I’m also all about the glam. So think of rhinestones, little crystal gems scattered across the face. But I also want to be careful, because these wedding pictures will live until the end of time—and that makeup has got to be perfect. So, better to keep it classy. I know that’s a lot coming from me, but better to keep it a bit more safe than to go too over-the-top. S B: Will you be doing your own wedding makeup? NJ: I’ve gotten this question a lot. And the answer is, of course, yes. Can you imagine? I do all my makeup all the time. I do it for big events. And can you imagine me waking up on my wedding day being like, ‘I’ll have someone else scoot in and just do it for me.’ I could not have that trust. Nobody can touch these brows like I do. It’s all going to be me. S B: Do you have tips for to-be-weds looking to hire a professional makeup artist? NJ: It is really important to get to know your pro. I think meeting up at least once prior to the wedding, even prior to your makeup trial, is super important. Go for coffee if they have time. Get to know them. Really dive into their work. Basically become besties with them for about a week. You want to make sure that the style you’re looking for is something they can comfortably do with a time limit. Ask if they have done weddings before. Have they mastered the style of makeup that you want? And please, trust me, test out your makeup first. Plan a makeup trial so you can see what it looks like and if it’s what you want.

style? And how long do you need? Plan, plan, plan! The last thing you want on this magical day is to stress over time limits. Make sure that they are comfortable with the amount of time they’re given and ask for examples of their previous work so you can really zoom in on the details. And above all, make sure they have a foundation that matches your skin tone. S B: Are you building a wedding registry? NJ: What is a wedding registry? S B: Maybe this isn’t a Dutch custom, but it’s when you register for gifts that your wedding guests give you. NJ: Oh! S B: Yes! Gifts. NJ: You call it what? S B: A wedding registry. NJ: A wedding registry. I actually am working on a wedding registry. What’s funny is the dress that I’m working on is pushing the budget a little bit, and by a little bit I mean a lot, so my invite is literally going to say, ‘Please send scented candles and/or some money, because the budget got pushed by a lot.’ S B: That’s very honest and straightforward. What’s the most outrageous item you’ve registered for? NJ: Oh, I don’t really have a crazy item I’ve registered for. If I get at least two scented candles, I’m a happy girl. I’m also a little bit scared because I feel like I’m going to get like 50 scented candles, but it’s fine. S B: Do you have a favorite brand? NJ: God, scented candles by Diptyque. Please. Yes. S B: Which part of wedding planning are you enjoying the most? NJ: If I’m being a hundred percent honest, I’m going to taste some food this week and I cannot tell you how excited I am about that part. I’m a huge foodie—I love food. I have been dreaming of this day for so long. The day after the wedding we’re doing a big breakfast, since it’s my favorite part of the day. We’re tasting all of the breakfast food this week. I’m so excited. ››

going to be surrounded by food. I think our theme is food. I might just pull up in a Lady Gaga meat dress. We love food so much, so of course, we have to give our guests the best of the best. I’m really excited for even our guests to see what we came up with. S B: Are you serving a certain kind of cuisine? NJ: We did taste the dinner food already. We were between two restaurants and one was this very high-end type of food, like Michelin-star food. Like ‘ugh’ food. But it was so niche. So we found this other restaurant that has hints of Michelinstar food but is more accessible. I can’t wait, because I know my brother, who’s not about fancy food at all, will love it, and I know that my mom, who is all about fancy food, will love it as well. S B: Are you incorporating any details to honor your families or loved ones? NJ: A few years ago, my little brother Mikai passed away, and his favorite color was red. We are paying tribute to him by incorporating the color red somewhere. I’m not going to tell where yet, but it’s going to be there. S B: Are you incorporating any Dutch wedding traditions? NJ: In the Netherlands, you have typical Dutch snacks. We have frikandel, croquettes and kaassoufflé. If you’re not Dutch, you have no clue what I’m talking about, but they’re amazing fried snacks. You can serve the best food in the world, but people will go nuts for a FEBO food wall. Again, if you aren’t Dutch that won’t mean anything to you, but it’s a food wall you can get snacks out of. We’re going to have a FEBO food wall at the end of our wedding. It’s brilliant. S B: What’s not to love about that? NJ: Ugh. Yes. S B: What’s another wedding-themed word in Dutch? NJ: The Dutch word for wedding is bruiloft. You’re cordially invited to Nikkie and Dylan’s bruiloft. But actually, please don’t show up. I don’t have room for too many people.
NJ: Easily the biggest challenge has been the dress. So much
depends on the dress. Creating a dress from scratch—because that’s what we’re doing—has not been easy. You have to find a designer who really connects with you, someone you trust. But also, in my case, someone who I want to give that special moment to, because this dress will be seen by the world. I want someone genuine and talented to make that dress for me, because it will be a huge moment for them as well. It has been very difficult. And then with designing the dress comes deciding on the shape, the material, the fabric. It’s a nightmare. S B: Have you chosen a designer? NJ: My wedding is this year and we are still working on sketches, if that gives you any idea. What happened was—I’m giving you the real tea, all the tea—I had a designer and their budget was just...not even a scented candle could fix that. Like that budget was a no. So we switched designers. This new designer is incredible. And I’m so honored that they even want to do it for me, but still we are in a little bit of a time crunch, and we are starting over with sketches again. S B: Is there anything else you can reveal about the dress? NJ: Well, first of all, look at me. It’s not going to be simple. It’s going to be a lot of dress. It’s going to be shiny. It’s going to be glamorous. It’s probably going to be a lot for a lot of people out there, but that’s what’s perfect for me. S B: Why the decision to go custom? NJ: Your girl is large and in charge. I’m 6’3”. And basically I can’t find the craziness, the madness that is in my head, in a store. I need someone to physically create that for me because I’m a little cuckoo up in here. S B: Which part of your wedding day are you most excited about? NJ: I’m looking forward to putting that ring on and kissing each other, knowing that we’ve sealed the deal. I think every bride says that. I’m also really looking forward to the food. Oh my God. Like I said, I’m a big foodie and this wedding is
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO PUTTING THAT RING ON AND KISSING EACH OTHER, AND KNOWING THAT WE'VE SEALED THE DEAL.

After a six-year engagement, The Bachelorette’s JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers were more than ready to tie the knot. They finally wed in an intimate ceremony in May 2022 at Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, California. The picturesque venue played an integral part in their wedding details, especially the invitations—which they designed exclusively with The Knot. “We knew that we wanted our invitations to give guests an idea of what our wedding would feel like,” JoJo told us before the nuptials. “Having the illustration of the vineyard was a beautiful way to show them what to expect.” The duo personalized just about every element of their stationery suite, from the font and colors to the paper itself. Now you can shop their invitation collection too. “We hadn’t realized to what extent you can customize these invitations,” she added. “Being able to work with The Knot was perfect for us and our wedding.”

Here’s how to find a wedding dress that’s big on style without blowing your budget.
c
all us biased, but in our opinion, there are few things more exciting than shopping for your wedding dress. It’s a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to go all in with your look and wear something that’s entirely you—whether that means lacing up the corset back of a dramatic ball gown or opting for an understated slip dress that’s tailored to perfection. But when you first start looking at dresses, it’s not unusual to feel a little dazed by the sticker shock of designer gowns. According to The Knot Real Weddings Study, which surveyed more than 15,000 couples who married in 2021, the average cost of a wedding dress last year was $1,800. Spending money on a made-to-order wedding dress is justified by the fact that you’re getting a brand-new design created especially for you, but if you’re working with a limited budget, you might be feeling stuck for options. The good news: There are several work-arounds you can use to save money and still find a wedding dress you truly love. Start planning now and follow these expertapproved shopping tips before you hit the salon.
ABOUT THE EXPERTS These bridal salon owners gave us the inside scoop on how to dress shop on a budget.
MALLORY THORBURN Co-Owner of The White Magnolia FL, GA, TN, SC

T I P : BEGIN YOUR DRESS SEARCH EARLY
When you first get engaged, it might seem like you have plenty of time to find a wedding dress, but it’s better to start shopping as soon as possible (especially since it might take a few appointments
22FALL_FASHBTY_FashionA.L [P]_430426.indd 62
to find your dream gown). You should plan to purchase your dress at least nine months before your wedding day to give yourself the most options. “This is a comfortable range to make sure you have the choice of any gown you would want without having to risk paying the rush fees associated with shipping or alterations,” says Mallory Thorburn, co-owner of The White Magnolia, a bridal boutique with locations in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina. Starting early also means that you won’t feel as pressured to make a purchase right away—and you can keep tabs on discounts and special offers at local bridal salons as they come up. “Many bridal shops offer firsttime appointment incentives or have different sales throughout the year,” adds Thorburn. “Do your research on a bridal shop before you start the process so you go into your appointment prepared to take advantage of discounts."
CHRISTINE GREENBERG Co-Owner of Urban Set Bride Richmond, VA
One foolproof way to reduce the cost of your wedding dress is to choose a simple style, not only when it comes to embellishments, but also the silhouette and the amount of fabric required. All of these elements factor into the
Remember to factor accessories like a veil into your budget.
total price of the design and the time required to make it. The more time and materials needed, the more you can expect to pay. “Most wedding gowns are made by hand, so the more details there are, the more expensive the gown will become,” says Christine Greenberg, co-owner of Urban Set Bride in Richmond, Virginia. “If you love beading, hand-placed European laces, fine fabrics and unique embellishments, be ready to invest.” If your heart is set on an ornate gown, don’t give up just yet. With the help of your bridal stylist—and an open mind—you can get the same effect with a few budget-friendly tricks. “There are different variations of all types of gowns, so you can achieve your bridal vision at almost any price point,” says Thorburn. “For example, if you love the look of head-to-toe sparkle, search for a gown that has a layer of sparkle tulle versus hand-sewn Swarovski crystals throughout."

the store. Sample dresses may need extra TLC or alterations (due to limited sizes and wear and tear), but you can potentially find a designer gown that would otherwise be a stretch for your budget. “Most bridal shops have a sample sale or two per year where they sell their samples at a fraction of the standard price,” says Thorburn. “Find a shop that carries designers you love, call to ask when their next sample sale is and mark your calendar.” TIP:
PLAN AHEAD FOR CUSTOMIZATIONS

TIP:
The baseline cost of the dress isn’t the only expense you need to budget for. “Almost every wedding gown will to need to be altered in some form to perfectly fit your body,” says Thorburn. “Keep in mind that alterations are typically not included in the cost of a dress.” When you’re considering purchasing a gown, Thorburn advises asking your bridal stylist to estimate the cost of alterations before you commit—knowing that the final price depends on your seamstress. During your appointment, you can also ask about any customizations you have in mind, such as lining the bodice or adding straps, in case it’s easier for the designer to do while they’re making your dress. “As you are being measured for your gown, be open with your

stylist about what you hope to achieve with the final product," says Greenberg. "They’ll be able to guide you on changes you can make directly with the designer that could save you time and money once you're ready for alterations. Most seamstresses charge by the hour or by the amount of adjustments needed.” T I P : SHOP SAMPLE AND OFF-THE-RACK STYLES
Whether you’re in a time crunch or looking to snag a couture gown at a discount, sample sales and off-the-rack dresses are great alternatives to consider. “From short engagements, unexpected pregnancies, military deployment and more, there are so many reasons why you may need a gown to take home that day,” says Greenberg. With a sample dress, you save money by purchasing the actual dress that customers try on in

ATTEND TRUNK SHOWS
Are you already obsessed with a specific wedding dress designer? If so, be on the lookout for their trunk show at a boutique in your area. “Waiting for a trunk show is a great way to get a discount on the retail price and a nice way to see the full collection of gowns that may not be present in the shop full-time,” says Greenberg. If you attend a designer’s trunk show, have your ideal dress and budget in mind ahead of time. “Trunk shows usually only last a weekend or two, so if you're looking for a specific gown, be ready to make a purchase,” says Thorburn. “There is typically a discount associated with the trunk show, allowing you to get a great deal on your dress.” If there isn't a trunk show anytime soon, Greenberg recommends being open with your bridal consultant about your budget and asking if there are any other discounts available, especially if you’re a service member, teacher, nurse or first responder. “Your occupation could save you the same amount of money as a trunk show discount.” Ultimately, remember that any gown you choose will be a special one—and the dress is only one part of your wedding day. “Don’t take things so seriously,” says Greenberg. “If you invest more in the gown that makes you feel the best, there is plenty of time to adjust your overall wedding budget to accommodate.”

Most wedding cakes are priced per slice—the more guests, the more slices you’ll need. A baker’s time is a big factor in the cost of a cake too. If you’re the “eat dessert first” type, you may want to set aside a big chunk of your budget for your dream wedding cake. A healthy budget will let you indulge in complex flavors and speciality fillings. You’ll have more leeway with the design too— from sugar flowers to fondant cutouts, the options are sure to delight your sweet tooth. If you’re looking to save money on dessert, stick to simple designs with minimal embellishments. Fresh flowers will always cost less than their sugar counterparts. Another idea is to have a beautifully decorated small cutting cake, and then serve guests the same flavor from a sheet cake in the kitchen.

BAKER: JAY MUSE FOR LULU CAKE BOUTIQUE; PIPING ICON: SLIDICON/NOUN PROJECT
Fondant is an icing sheet draped over a cake to create a supersmooth exterior. It’s made of sugar and corn syrup but doesn’t have much taste. Most bakers will ice the cake in buttercream before draping it in fondant. The smooth finish of fondant allows for endless design possibilities, from hand-painting to gold-leaf detailing. Buttercream, as its name suggests, is a butter-based frosting that can be spread or piped on cakes. It absorbs flavor brilliantly and is the more affordable option when it comes to cake. It still offers plenty of design possibilities, including the rustic naked cake, where tiers are lightly coated in frosting to show off the cake and filling.

smell the Flowers are synonymous with weddings. From centerpieces to bouquets and personals, flowers will undoubtedly stretch your budget regardless of how much you have to spend. To make the most of every dollar, opt for in-season stems, grown locally if possible. Not only will this guarantee you the freshest flowers, but you’ll save a little money too. Share your vision with your pro and strategize on the best ways to achieve it. Some stems can be bought in bulk, resulting in savings, while some arrangements can do double duty in the ceremony and reception. Less can be more too. Opt for minimalist arrangements, like ikebana-inspired centerpieces, or an artfully displayed single stem in a special vessel. Mix standout blooms with a variety of less expensive filler stems for a high-impact arrangement. Or supplement your tabletop florals with other decor pieces like lanterns or candelabras. If you’re a flower fanatic and have money to spend, go big on blooms, complementing classics like garden roses and ranunculus with unexpected—and more costly—stems (think grape hyacinths and kumquats). You can also opt for elevated vessels like a copper urn or a pedestal vase. Add florals to other areas of the venue too, like the escort card display, a photo backdrop or the bar.
AN O D E to the CARNATI O N This hearty stem with fringed petals symbolizes love—need we say more? Dianthus caryophyllus, aka the carnation, comes in a wide variety of colors and is almost always in season. It mixes beautifully with roses and ranunculus for a romantic, budget-friendly arrangement.

be
seated Treating your guests to a good time means something different to every couple. Food and drinks are part of most celebrations, along with entertainment and, in some cases, experiences. If you are setting aside a chunk of your budget for entertainment or a live oyster shucker, there are plenty of ways you can save on your tabletop rentals and still wow your guests. The more formal your menu, the more sophisticated the settings should be. If you’re opting for a buffet or treating guests to a variety of culinary stations, simple rentals are a perfect choice. Most venues have white plates that you can accent with a linen or printed menu for a pop of color. Have a little more wiggle room in your budget? A charger or speciality flatware can add instant interest to a setting. If you plan to have a multi-course meal, you’ll need additional plates, flatware and stemware (if there are wine pairings) to serve this special dinner. You may want them to match the formality of the meal too, which might mean upgrading your plates or adding a lustrous linen to the table.

When it comes to rentals, try to stick to one pro. This will help you save on delivery fees and taxes. If your venue doesn’t have everything you need, double check with your florist—perhaps you can add a few decor rentals to your flower order.
Some extras deserve, well, extra consideration. These table additions can make a big impact.

G L A S SWARE Adding colored stemware or vintage glasses can change the look and feel of a setting. Or opt for a specialty glass for your signature sip.
C HARG E R A charger plate is the ultimate backdrop for a plated meal. If you’re skipping linens, a statement plate can help distinguish a setting.
LI N E N S Napkins and tablecloths can instantly elevate the look of a table setting, especially those with a print or a textured design.

DESIGN DUALITY “We juxtaposed buttoned-up elements in the midcentury modern aesthetic with the lightness of the color palette, all set against a beautiful backdrop of golden rolling hills, autumn colors and vineyards,” says the couple. BURST OF LIGHT For their cake topper and stationery, Kellen and Phil took inspiration from their home decor and elements of the hotel. The Skyview’s restaurant, Norman, has a gold-and-brass sunburst design reminiscent of the chandelier in the couple’s living room. FESTIVE FLOWERS The couple describes their floral arrangements as “magical designs full of texture and interest, made up of cactus, ranunculus, orchids, anthurium, dahlias and dried palm leaves with fun pops of blue.”
B
oth the East and West Coasts hold immense meaning for Kellen Schefter (36 and a clean energy professional) and Philip (Phil) Javellana (38 and a nonprofit professional). Though the couple has roots in Washington, DC, where they live, they serendipitously met in Los Angeles and got engaged in San Luis Obispo, California. The couple jumped right into planning a wedding in their beloved Golden State, but when the pandemic forced them to postpone, Kellen and Phil said “I do” at a minimony in DC. A year later, the couple celebrated at Skyview Los Alamos, a revamped 1950s motel, with a bicoastal-themed event befitting their jet-setting love story. “We combined East Coast sophistication with West Coast fun and the rustic surroundings of wine country,” says Phil. — HAN NAH N OWAC K

LET’S DANCE Kellen’s mom suggested that the mother-son dance transition from a slow song to an upbeat number. “We started with some basic ballroom dancing to ‘Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To),’ by Diana Ross, before breaking into ‘Shining Star,’ by Earth, Wind & Fire, for choreographed disco moves,” Kellen says. SPECIAL SIPS One of the signature cocktails on offer, a vodka soda with a splash of cranberry and pineapple juice, carried over from the couple’s minimony menu. As Phil’s go-to, it was a must for both events: “It’s a nod to my typical order at the bar after dodgeball games,” he says. REST AND RELAX Phil loved the velvet couches and black ottomans in the lounge area because they “brought a chic and sophisticated vibe to the rustic surroundings.”

TROPICAL TRIMMINGS In addition to sourcing carnations, anthurium and protea for the arrangements, the couple’s floral designer included unconventional elements, such as coconuts, in some of the weekend’s designs. COLORFUL COLLECTION The couple wanted the wedding events “to be filled with color to complement the lush tropical venue.” The weekend started with bright oranges and pinks on display at the mehndi party, while the reception leaned into darker shades of teal and red. WELL CARED FOR Mili and Jai kept the guest experience top of mind, providing fans and parasols for friends and family to protect against the heat. They also gifted loved ones welcome bags with mezcal, survival kits and a weekend itinerary.
M
ili Shah (31 and a VP of corporate strategy) and Jaidav (Jai) Reddy (32 and an investment banker) wanted a destination wedding so they could gather loved ones in a unique location where attendees could make memories of their own. Thanks to five events and ample entertainment, they were able to do just that. A mentalist kicked off the weekend by reading guests’ minds at the mehndi, which doubled as the welcome party. At the sangeet, attendees enjoyed a guided tequila tasting before being wowed by a surprise fireworks display. The next day, Jai’s arrival by horse preceded the couple’s Hindu ceremony, which was performed in Sanskrit. To top it all off, Mili and Jai made an epic entrance to their reception by boat and danced with loved ones until 3 am. — H N

MADE OF MEMORIES The couple displayed seating arrangements on a hand-painted blue board, naming each table for a place they’d traveled. Guests who shared in those fun times sat at the corresponding tables. “For example, we recently had a great trip to Miami with a group of our friends, so we sat them at the Miami table,” says Mili. MEANINGFUL MUSIC The couple shared a first dance to “This Will Be Our Year,” by the Zombies, because it’s a tune they listened to frequently in the early days of their relationship. “After having to postpone our wedding by a full year due to the pandemic, this tune felt even more appropriate as our first dance song. Finally our year had come to celebrate our marriage after waiting longer than expected,” shares Mili.

DREAM DAZZLER Jason designed Haley’s platinum engagement ring, which has an oval center stone framed by tapered baguettes. He based it on one she saw in a magazine 15 years earlier and the jewelry her late grandmother wore. WHAT IS LOVE? “Instead of a traditional guest book, we created a wall that said ‘Love is…’ and prompted guests to write their thoughts. I’m glad we did this, because after the wedding, it was special to read all of the responses,” says Haley. CUSTOM CREST The couple commissioned a personalized crest with “our initials, local wildflowers, sunflowers, yellow Aspen leaves, a bear, a bison and our wedding date,” says Haley. “The bison is an ode to the mascot of the University of Colorado Boulder, where we met, while ‘bear’ is what Jason and I call each other.”
H
aley Burridge (31 and an educator and recent law school graduate) and Jason Chrestionson (30 and an antitrust attorney) met in Colorado and got engaged in the foothills of the Rockies several years later. So deciding to head back to the peaks to say “I do” on their nine-year anniversary was a simple choice. In a beautiful stroke of symbolism, the state also happens to be “almost exactly halfway between where we are each from: Chicago and San Francisco,” says Haley. Since most of the couple’s guests were coming from out of town, Aspen won out as the mountain town of choice, thanks to the many direct flights available. To make the weekend even more memorable for everyone making the trip, the couple hosted a welcome party with a Western theme as a festive nod to the locale. — H N

PLENTY OF PERSONALIZATION “We incorporated several sentimental elements, from a Rupi Kaur poem in our ceremony to cocktail napkins that listed fun facts about us,” says Haley. For further customization, the couple named their signature drinks after their pets and pulled reception table monikers from places around Boulder that are meaningful to them. “I loved that our wedding decisions were intentional and special,” says Haley. BOOT SCOOTIN’ FUN “For favors, each guest left with a note from us thanking them for coming, a bag of Chicago-style popcorn, water bottles with cowboy-boot koozies and lightup silver-and-white sequined cowboy hats. The koozies were such a big hit that our wedding planner had to save two for us because so many people took them,” recalls Haley.

#MAKETRADITION Haley and Jason met as sophomores at the University of Colorado Boulder, but didn’t become an item until their senior year—after Jason asked Haley out three times. They worked the college mascot, Ralphie, into their crest design and commissioned a cake resembling the CU logo.
INSTEAD OF A TRADITIONAL WEDDING CAKE, WE HAD A ‘CAKE’ MADE FROM STACKED WHEELS OF OUR FAVORITE CHEESES. HOWEVER, WE DID HAVE A RALPHIE GROOM’S CAKE FOR GUESTS WHO WANTED ACTUAL CAKE.

HONORING HERITAGE Diana and David held a tea ceremony as a tribute to their parents. In addition to the ritual, Diana says that her father-daughter dance was a meaningful part of the wedding, because “my dad whispered that he was so proud of the person I’ve become.” SUBSTANTIAL SPREAD The couple’s catering focused on variety. “We wanted our guests to enjoy different types of foods and have fun with ones they may not have tried before,” says Diana. The menu included ice cream push pops, a milk-and-cookie station and gummy bear martinis with pea-flower syrup. PERSONAL PROMISES “We’ve rowed through rivers...and ventured to beautiful lands,” said David during his vows. “But these experiences only tell one part of our story. Every day we continue telling it.”

hades of pink inspired Diana Le (33 and a clinical pharmacist) and David Ngo’s (34 and a psychiatrist) glamorous wedding. They wanted to showcase the color in all of its beautiful varieties and leaned into an ombré palette ranging from dusty pink and blush to deep berry. The couple first introduced the color scheme in their invitations, sealed with wax stamps, and carried it throughout the whole wedding. Even the menu got the pink treatment, as guests enjoyed raspberry frangipane tarts at the reception. To add a luxe feel to the design, Diana and David layered in a variety of textures and surfaces, from a mirrored ceremony aisle to glass tabletop decor, like delicate cloches that served as table numbers. — H N

DO I NEED A PRENUP? I can’t tell you exactly what you should do, because I’m not a lawyer (and I’m also not you). But prenups—or postnups—can be a great and healthy beginning. They’re really just a thorough look at what might happen in your financial future. Prenups aren’t just for self-preservation; they’re particularly useful if one of you owns a business or has children from a previous relationship.
Financial wellness begins with grasping the basics of money management and discussing everything from your income to credit scores.
HOW SHOULD COUPLES MERGE ASSETS? There’s no one right way to combine your finances. Some people merge everything into a shared account and some use a designated joint account to pay bills. They then split expenses according to their proportion of the household income. Others choose to keep everything separate.

WILL CREDIT SCORES COME INTO PLAY IN MY RELATIONSHIP? It’s important to be transparent about each of your finances. Your credit scores are a big part of that, but they don’t have to be a deal breaker. If you or your partner have a low score, what’s important is whether you make an effort to fix it. It’s also worth noting that in the event of a divorce, a woman’s credit score typically falls more than a man’s.

WHY DOES MONEY CAUSE FRICTION IN RELATIONSHIPS? We all manage money differently and so much of that comes from our childhoods and past experiences. There’s a lot of emotional baggage with money. Being in financial sync with your partner makes it easier to make decisions and respect and support one another’s goals. You want to trust one another to protect your joint future.
investing platform for women. The former CEO of Citigroup's Global Wealth Management Group, Krawcheck has spent more than 25 years in the financial services industry. Her life’s mission is to get more money into the hands of women.
HOW DO YOU AVOID NEGATIVE FINANCIAL SURPRISES IN MARRIAGE? It feels uncomfortable at first, but at the end of the day, what could be more intimate than unpacking that emotional money baggage together? A statistic worth remembering: Some 78 percent of couples who talk about money every week report being happy, while only 50 percent of couples who talk about it very infrequently say the same.
115
WHO SHOULD MANAGE THE MONEY? Research shows that 74 percent of women who outsource the management of their money to their partners will have a negative surprise when that money comes back to them (often after a divorce or death). Both parties should be involved, stay informed and communicate regularly.
HOW DOES DEBT WORK? The laws are different in every state, but usually, the debt you took on before you married stays your personal responsibility. Debt you take on after you get married becomes your joint responsibility. This is all the more reason to stay involved in your joint finances—to avoid any negative surprises.
WHAT SHOULD I BE AWARE OF REGARDING TAXES AFTER MARRIAGE? Taxes can shift in quite a few ways when you get married, from your filing status and workplace benefits to adjusting the name on your social security card. I encourage you to consult a tax pro together before the big day, just so you both know what to expect.

Here are various insurance policies you can get for your wedding and marriage. iability, risks and insurance aren’t exactly the most alluring topics, but proactive preparation has been trending since the onset of the pandemic. Couples planning their weddings and honeymoons—even looking ahead to marriage—should understand the ins and outs of insurance policies. “COVID-19 made it clear that there are risks involved in wedding planning that people often take for granted,” says Michael Giusti, an analyst at InsuranceQuotes.com. Here’s the 411 on insurance, broken down by type. WHILE PLANNING

Perhaps the biggest jewelry purchases a couple will ever make,
engagement and wedding rings require protection—after all, accidents happen. (Remember when a certain celeb heiress chucked her $2 million diamond into an ice bucket while partying in Miami?) Rings are considered personal property and are generally protected by your renters' or homeowner's policy. However, most home and renters’ policies will only cover $500 to $2,000 per bauble— paid only after the deductible is met, says Giusti. “When it comes to big rings, look for a separate insurance policy that only covers the jewelry. You can go with a specialized policy or get a rider through your primary homeowner’s or renter’s insurance.”
Both couples and wedding professionals will remember 2020, a time when the term “force majeure” had its moment in our lexicon. Liability protects you if something goes wrong at the event. “For example, if a guest damages the venue, a waiter trips and falls, or the potato salad gives everyone food poisoning.” While these less-than-optimal circumstances aren’t exactly on your wedding day schedule (as planners can attest, things go wrong all the time), imbibing guests do require extra protection.
CANCELLATION INSURANCE The other type of wedding insurance is related to canceled or postponed events. “Cancellation protects you if something prevents things from going the way you planned. For example, the venue closes and you have to reschedule or relocate, a hurricane prevents guests from attending or the mother of the bride gets food poisoning (hopefully not from the potato salad),” says Giusti. “The cancellation policy would help pay for nonrefundable deposits and ideally help you reschedule the event.” Certain policies will also cover the cost of a vendor who’s MIA or doesn’t uphold their end of the contract. In a few instances there are even “change of heart” clauses that protect innocent parties if someone calls off the wedding.
HONEYMOON INSURANCE
OUR TWO CENTS Learn the ins and outs of insurance options before signing on the dotted line.
22FALL_FEAT_FinancialWellness.L [P]_430569.indd 116
Honeymoon insurance is a specific kind of travel insurance that protects you if your trip is canceled or interrupted by something outside your control. “It’s meant to refund you for nonrefundable deposits,” says Giusti. “If someone gets cold feet and cancels, the policy won’t kick in. But if a hurricane hits your resort, your policy will protect you.”

It’s best to be prepared for the unthinkable. Add your spouse to your life insurance policy to ensure your benefits go to them if you die. If you don’t have a life insurance policy yet, a new marriage is a time to reevaluate your insurance needs. “Life insurance is there to help pay for your obligations after you die,” he adds. “Without your income, how will your spouse cover your portion of the bills? For those merging lives, Giusti recommends updating your policy after the wedding. STAY IN THE BLACK If you’re looking to start married life with your savings intact, we recommend a two-pronged approach: adjust your habits to save for the wedding and find ways to save on the event itself.
SHORTEN THE EVENT The longer the day, the more you need to provide for your guests (and spend on vendor hours). Have a short and sweet wedding instead. Many planning companies offer allinclusive micro-wedding packages that are a fantastic value and make planning stupidly easy.
22FALL_FEAT_FinancialWellness.L [P]_430569.indd 118
PICK A DO-IT-ALL VENUE If you have a lot of out-of-town guests, consider a venue where you can have the ceremony and reception at one spot. A hotel allows you to save on transportation costs and makes planning much easier.
CONSIDER A WEEKDAY
SAVE ON STATIONERY
Venues charge a premium for weekends since they are in limited supply. You can save big if you select a Monday or Thursday. Note that not all vendors offer discounts for weekday weddings, but venues typically do, and that's where a big chunk of your budget goes.
Digitally print your invitation suite or just do special printing techniques (like letterpress or foil) on the invite itself, not the whole suite. Some couples also choose an online RSVP, saving the cost of the card, envelope and stamp.

C O N T R IBUT E T O R ET IR EMENT Beyond tax benefits, a retirement plan offers an easy way for you to start preparing for your life in the future. If your employer offers a match, contribute the amount needed to take full advantage.
PRIORITIZE SPENDING Talk to your partner about your need-to-haves versus nice-to-haves when it comes to the wedding. That may involve the city and venue, number of guests and whether to offer an open bar—all things that can significantly swing your wedding cost up or down.

INVEST IN YOUR SELF

INVEST
These can include traditional benefits such as medical, dental and vision insurance, as well as supplemental life insurance, legal assistance programs and health and wellness programs. Make use of them to reduce stress and keep costs low while taking care of your overall health.
EXAMINE MONTHLY EXPENSES Work with your partner to figure out which expenses you need to make and those that could be decreased or eliminated. Are there any unused subscriptions that make sense to cancel? Could your phone plans be consolidated for savings?
REVIEW PAYCHECKS Consider if you’ve gotten a refund or had to pay additional taxes after submitting your tax return. If you’ve typically gotten a refund, you may want to adjust your tax withholding so less money is withheld, and you receive current cash to fund your living expenses.
CONSIDER NEW CREDIT CARDS It may make sense to open up a new card that offers a signup bonus. These typically require that you spend a certain amount in the first few months. With large wedding payments, you'll meet the spend and get points for your honeymoon.

off the entire balance before the expiration date of the offer or the due date. Otherwise, you may get hit with massive interest charges. THE UNEXPECTED COSTS
Putting wedding expenses on a credit card will allow you to you earn points—aka free money for your honeymoon or post-wedding purchases. THE BEST CREDIT CARDS FOR WEDDING EXPENSES
I recommend using a high-earning card for the biggest charges, such as the reception. If your venue takes cards as a form of payment, be aware of potential transaction fees and do the cost-benefit analysis of whether swiping is the best option for you. If so, the ideal card to use to pay for your reception venue will depend on how the purchase is coded. If your reception expenses (like caterer and/or venue) are coded as restaurants, put these purchases on an American Express Gold Card, which gets you 4x points per dollar at restaurants. A close runner-up is the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which gets you 3x points per dollar at specific establishments. These cards can also be handy for the rehearsal

OUR TWO CENTS Only use credit cards when you have the cash flow to pay off the bills. Otherwise, the interest rates will saddle you with additional debt—far from the financial responsibility necessary for your new marriage.
HOW TO AVOID TRANSACTION FEES ON CARDS
Some vendors won’t take credit cards, or they'll charge a fee. In this case, write a check—unless you’re working toward a welcome bonus on a new card and you wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach the spending minimum. If the vendor is willing to take a debit card without fees, consider opening an American Express Rewards Checking account. You’ll earn 1x points for every eligible $2 you spend on the card, which is better than nothing. If any portion of your wedding (or honeymoon) is international, use a card that waives foreign transaction fees. If you swipe the wrong card when you’re abroad, you could incur an additional 2.7 to 3 percent fee on top of the purchase. That’s money for a cocktail with your spouse.

dinner or the farewell brunch. For flowers for the bridal shower or the rehearsal dinner, certain online floral delivery businesses offer between one and 30 miles per dollar via airline partners through their online shopping portals. This is a great option for prewedding events, but not necessarily for the wedding itself, as most couples work with local florists. Credit card shopping portals are a great resource for couples making other wedding-related purchases, such as accessories or gifts. Some vendors have deals with companies like David Yurman, Blue Nile and Nordstrom. For purchases with merchants that don't fit into traditional bonus categories—like a photographer or furniture rentals—turn to a card that offers a solid earning rate on everyday spends. These options include the Capital One Venture card, Venture X card or the Citi Double Cash. Alternatively, if you're looking to pay for your wedding over time, consider opening a card that offers a zero-percent APR introductory offer, which could allow you to pay off expenses with no interest for up to 18 months. Pay
If you’re planning a destination wedding, most large hotel companies will allow you to earn points for hosting your celebration at one of their locations. Depending on the property, this could be in addition to the points you earn from paying with your credit card. For example, hosting your event at a Marriott property could earn you 2x points for every eligible dollar (up to $30,000 in spending). Elite members will even earn their usual bonuses, meaning that a Titanium Elite member could take home up to 105,000 points. Hyatt, on the other hand, is offering its "Together Offer" through December 31, 2023. This awards couples with up to 150,000 points on the event, again depending on your total spend. Participating properties will provide bonuses like complimentary guest rooms or enhanced food and beverage options. You’ll want to check with your property, of course, to ensure this is the case.

Buying a home
While wedding planning, we discussed what sacrifices to make in order to save up for our wedding, but also how we could reach our goal of buying a house. Our wedding planner guided us on where to save and where to spend so we could get the things we really wanted for our wedding. We have decided to work toward creating a financial identity that involves combining our finances. Highlighting our individual strengths and learning opportunities regarding money allowed us to build trust with one another in creating a lasting financial relationship. We have also been working on furnishing our new home and preparing for a future family.
MONEY PRIORITY
Pragmatism and professional advice SAVING GOAL
Future children
Early on, we had honest conversations about our finances, including a consultation with a financial planner to make sure we were saving enough and could agree to some shared financial goals. We did not combine our finances but agreed to contribute in proportion to our earnings for our shared goals. Our primary goal is starting a family, which is quite costly for a gay couple. We also want to reduce debt and save for some home renovations. Both of us are avid travelers, but while we are saving, we are holding off. It motivates us to know that we’ll travel more after we’ve saved for a new bathroom renovation and paid down our debts.
MONEY PRIORITY
'Ours' not 'mine and yours' mentality SAVING GOAL
Future children
Since getting engaged, we have taken the approach of viewing our finances not as "your" or "my" money, but as "ours." After the wedding, we plan to combine our finances. We have very similar goals for our money and aren’t worried about being totally financially unified. One shared goal is to invest in our future. We would love to buy a newer house in our dream neighborhood and a new car to set the foundation for building a family. As long as you and your partner are transparent with each other, you should do whatever you’re comfortable with and whatever works in your marriage.
MONEY PRIORITY
Scheduling financial conversations SAVING GOAL
Family trip to Europe
We sync up every quarter and do an audit of how much is in our bank accounts and investments, how much we’re spending and major purchases coming up. What we’ve found works for us is that we overcommunicate about major spending or investments, but trust each other about everyday purchases. We’ve hit many of our major financial milestones going into the wedding, including buying a house, being debt-free and putting money into investment accounts. We’d like to be more intentional about saving for family vacations. We both love investing in our businesses, our own personal growth and education. Setting goals and having a clear vision is everything to us.

St. Lucia AT A GLANCE LANGUAGE SPOKEN

December to April
1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago.
Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 2
3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.
6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast.
Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 7
8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant.
If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.
Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.
5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.
10 If you or your partner loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

Jamaica 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW 1 The best way to get around is in Jamaican Union of Travelers Association (JUTA)– licensed taxis.
Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds.

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip. 4
To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 6
7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay.
While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 8
9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.
Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves that have never seen the light of day! 10

Hopping around the bounce house at our prewedding sangeet was magical— it embodied jumping with joy. This was the first time we were able to let go of the stress that had built up from years of COVID and wedding planning.”
