Clothes can say a lot about a person—and they can say a lot about an event too. So whether it’s your intention or not, what you and your future spouse decide to wear at your wedding makes a pretty big statement about the two of you as a couple, as well as the vibe you’re trying to portray for your day (no pressure!). My husband and I went the traditional route: a tux and simple mermaid-style gown. We were married in a cathedral before celebrating at a downtown loft space, so the sleek simplicity of our looks just felt right. Not sure where you should start? Well, you’re in luck. In April, Shelley (our fashion and beauty editor) and I spent days scouring the Bridal Fashion Week runways in New York City to bring you an in-depth look at the hottest trends, silhouettes and more. (Spoiler alert: Both full skirts and pants are trending.) So no matter who you are or where you’re getting married, we think you’ll find something in our pages that feels just like you.

KRISTY RICE AUTHOR, STATIONER, ARTIST & STYLIST “The Art of Love” (p. 219)

What advice would you give to couples as they try to figure out their wedding style? Start small. Focus on the moments, spaces and details that give you joy in life, and pull ideas from there. Finding inspiration in commonly forgotten places is a passion of mine. Think about what makes you happy. A walk in the woods, sun shining into a white room, a colorful skirt and favorite pair of wedges, the color of two ice cream flavors melting together—those tiny and often overlooked moments can be awesome starting points. @momental

Rice’s book, The Painter’s Wedding, is available on Amazon.com

ARI MICHELSON PHOTOGRAPHER Cover

How did you keep such a large group engaged and energized for this cover? Figuring out the actual shot was easy, but making sure we brought the party atmosphere and joyousness from all the models into the photo was the challenging part. We had lots of music, cake and laughter, so everyone felt comfortable throughout the day, despite it being such a big team. When taking large group shots with your wedding party or family and friends, don’t forget it’s a celebration—have fun with it. @michelson_ari

K

VICTORIA AHN What are some floral trends you’re loving right now?

54

I’m obviously a big fan of the ikebana trend, which takes simple floral elements and arranges them in ways that draw attention to their subtle beauty. I’m also seeing a lot of foliage-heavy designs, as well as color palettes that have unanticipated, saturated accents like burgundy, dark blue or metallics. Whatever your vibe, there are so many new ways to include florals in your day, like using dried and preserved flowers as an accent. That can add unique textures and shapes to your arrangements. @designsbyahnnyc

ESTHER LEE SENIOR NEWS EDITOR

What’s your favorite part about working at The Knot? I think it would have to be the steady stream of cake in the office, or that this team knows how to throw a party. It’s such a delight to be here! We get to impact couples of all different backgrounds, communities, ages and belief systems on what is hopefully one of their favorite days ever. Plus, I get to indulge my unhealthy celeb obsession with the Obamas and George and Amal Clooney and call it “work.” @theestherlee

TOOLS

Organizing all those details and to-dos? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

64

K

PHOTOGRAPHY BY YUNHEE KIM

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE We know—you're probably figuring out where you should even start. We've got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe, swipe, swipe on images in our Style Quiz. It's a fun way to help zero in on your wedding vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). KEEP ORGANIZED Not sure what to-do comes when? No sweat—we've put together a checklist for you, and it's totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we'll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. COMPILE YOUR TEAM After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with personalized recs. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros, plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Now for the fun part: your registries. Family and friends are going to be looking to shower you with gifts all engagement long, so keep your wish lists full of options right from the app. Our universal registry tool makes it easy to add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between that handmade glass pitcher from Etsy and the badass grill from Home Depot. I love the idea of navy bridesmaid dresses, but I’m worried they’ll clash next to black tuxes on the groomsmen. Is this color combo a no-no? Carley Roney: This rule has gone the way of “no white after Labor Day”— so don’t bother giving it a second thought. In fact, these colors can work for almost any type of wedding. Pair inky-blue dresses with classic black suits and rich eggplant florals for an elegant, moody affair. If your signature style is a bit more vibrant, throw in a pop of color, like flamingo pink or kelly green. For a modern celebration, brighten the palette with scarlet accents. Still not convinced? Consider choosing ties or vests in something other than black—that still coordinates with your wedding palette, of course—to lighten the overall look and shift the focus away from the tuxedos. And for your attendants, opt for a shade of navy closer to black than to blue. But trust us, you don’t have to worry about this versatile color combo.

My family expects me to serve traditional Indian cuisine at my wedding, but how can I make sure I offer a meal every guest will love? Shawna Gohel: There are a ton of fusion menu options that allow you to creatively incorporate Indian flavors with a variety of other cuisines—think spicy chicken tikka tacos or paneer lettuce wraps. Another thought: Since Indian weddings often consist of multiple events, compromise with your family by having one of the other events feature a predominately non-Indian lineup. That way, you and your partner can incorporate some other favorite dishes into the celebration. Food is one of the best ways to show guests who you are as a couple.

What should we put in the welcome bags for our island destination wedding? Harmony Walton: For tropical vows, definitely include some sun essentials. Travel-size sunscreen and after-sun care, like aloe and moisturizing lotion, are both useful items for guests. Then throw in some beach-themed gifts to give your guests a peek into the fun to come. Sunglasses (even better if they’re emblazoned with your hashtag), flip-flops, towels and anything local you can source, like island rum cake or a voucher for a water activity such as paddleboarding, all do the trick.

The beautiful thing about creating a wedding registry is it allows a couple to begin envisioning and building their lives together— in a real, palpable way. It’s a foundation for planning the future and curating forever keepsakes, while knowing their loved ones are supporting them through it all (both literally and figuratively). But for Colorado-based couple Katie and Chris, this foundation wasn’t about shopping for pots and pans or even putting a down payment on a new home. The one thing they want more than anything? To become parents. So they registered on The Knot Newlywed Fund and asked their guests to help make that dream a reality. “WE JUST KNEW”

JENNY PAC K HAM We sat down with the iconic fashion designer to talk about her 30th anniversary and what she’s loving now. How did you get your start in bridal fashion? What inspired your 30th anniversary collection? The 2019 Bridal Collection was inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the 1930s. I love his novels and often return to the elegance of that age. What do you think is next for bridal fashion? Fuller silhouettes are having a moment. The Lucille dress from our latest collection features a floral-embroidered bodice with a full tulle skirt. What’s one thing every bride should know before going wedding dress shopping? Buying your wedding gown is a huge investment, and for most people this is the most important dress purchase they’ll ever make. Take your time—try on lots of different silhouettes and styles until you find the one that makes you feel wonderful. Most importantly, enjoy the process.

REMEMBERING

AMSALE ABERRA 1954 – 2018

Amsale’s runway show paid tribute to the late Amsale Aberra with a moment of silence featuring the A101 column, the first gown the designer ever created. Aberra made waves in the bridal industry in the 1980s when her minimalist dresses offered a more sophisticated alternative to the heavily embellished gowns popular at the time. Her small, made-toorder business established in 1986 grew to become a full-on fashion enterprise over the years, as Aberra opened a flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York and dressed celebrities like Halle Berry and Julia Roberts. Aberra is remembered as a bridal fashion icon and the inventor of the modern wedding dress. >>

Microcurrent Facial

K

HOW IT WORKS Is electricity the key to eternal youth? Microcurrent facialists think so. During this treatment, an aesthetician uses a microcurrent machine to apply a mild pulse of electricity to the face to stimulate circulation and collagen production while lifting and toning facial muscles. Think of it like a mini face-lift, without the surgery. HOW IT HELPS If lack of sleep or stress (say, from wedding planning) has your skin sagging, this is a noninvasive solution. “A microcurrent facial can help with a number of issues, like loss of elasticity, wrinkles and puffiness,” says Cecilia Wong, celebrity facialist and founder of Cecilia Wong Skincare in New York City. HOW TO TIME IT You’ll see immediate results after one treatment, but it’s a cumulative process. “It’s basically a workout for your face. The more treatments you get, the more your skin becomes toned and sculpted,” Wong says. She recommends brides get a series of six treatments leading up to their wedding. AVERAGE COST $300 per treatment

TKM18FALL_FASHBTY_BeautyTreatments.L [P].indd 120

HOW IT WORKS A whitening gel made with hydrogen peroxide bleach is smeared onto your teeth. A halogen light is then used to activate the bleach, which removes stains. “One treatment takes about 45 minutes, and the results last one to two years,” says Lana Rozenberg, a cosmetic dentist in New York City. HOW IT HELPS More effective than strips or gels, laser whitening removes surface stains on enamel, as well as deep-set stains, which occur as the dentin of the tooth naturally darkens over time. HOW TO TIME IT There’s no recovery period with laser teeth whitening. “You can have it done during lunch and go back to work,” Rozenberg says. But you should avoid any dark-staining food and drink for 24 hours after a treatment, so if you’re going to drink coffee or red wine on your wedding day, plan accordingly. AVERAGE COST $675 per treatment >>

Laser Hair Removal

122

K

HOW IT WORKS A specialist applies a

professional-grade laser device to the skin, which uses highly concentrated beams of light to target the root of hair beneath the skin’s surface. The pigment in the hair follicles absorbs the light, destroying the follicles and preventing future hair growth. HOW IT HELPS Rid yourself of unwanted coarse, dark hair and ingrowns. Another unexpected plus? “Areas with shadows, like the underarms, will appear lighter once hair growth is stunted,” says Keiann Roberts, the lead specialist at Spruce & Bond in New York City. HOW TO TIME IT Immediately following a treatment, you may experience slight redness, which typically lasts two to three days. Roberts recommends using aloe vera gel or an anti-inflammatory cream for any residual irritation. For optimal results, plan on at least four to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. “For a summer wedding, I would recommend starting your treatments in the fall or winter to make sure you have smooth skin by your wedding day,” Roberts says. AVERAGE COST $200 to $300 per session (number of sessions required depends on hair type and area treated)

important here. “Microblading is a process, not a quick fix,” Bray says. After your initial appointment, you must keep brows totally dry for a full week while scabs form. Once the scabs fall off, another couple of weeks are required to let the skin regenerate. At four weeks, you’ll need a touch-up

HOW IT WORKS Individual synthetic mink strands are bonded to each natural lash with a special medical-grade adhesive, approximately one millimeter away from the skin. The length and amount of lash extensions applied is tailored to your personal preference, natural lash color and eye shape. The entire process takes from 45 to 90 minutes and lasts up to three weeks without touch-ups. HOW IT HELPS Lash extensions are a longer-lasting, more natural-looking alternative to falsies. “Brides love it because they don’t have to worry about mascara, heavy eye makeup or strip lashes going awry on their day,” says Mandy Jacobellis, owner of Makeup Mandy salon in Los Angeles. HOW TO TIME IT Try out a set of extensions a couple of weeks before your wedding to make sure you like the look and feel. Jacobellis also recommends scheduling a touch-up right before your day to make any necessary tweaks. AVERAGE COST $200 to $500

Underarm Botox

BRIDES LOVE LASH EXTENSIONS BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HEAVY EYE MAKEUP, MASCARA OR STRIP LASHES GOING AWRY ON THEIR WEDDING DAY.

Microblading HOW IT WORKS This sophisticated take on permanent makeup is a form of tattooing in which hairlike strokes are drawn onto the brow area to resemble the look of your brow hairs. First, a microblading artist will draw your desired brow shape onto your brow area and apply numbing cream. Once the brows are numb, a handheld tool is used to create tiny incisions, where pigment is implemented. The result is a series of natural-looking, fine tattoo “hairs” that will last one to three years. HOW IT HELPS Microblading can be used to correct patchy or thin brows. “Many clients without serious brow issues even use it to create fuller brows than they have naturally,” says Kendra Bray, founder of Better Brows in New York City. HOW TO TIME IT Timing is particularly

Lash Extensions

to perfect any areas that didn’t retain pigment—especially if you have a naturally oily complexion. Bray recommends scheduling your first appointment at least 12 weeks before your wedding to allow enough time for healing. AVERAGE COST $500 to $1,600

HOW IT WORKS After numbing the area, a physician injects 100 units of Botox into each armpit. “The solution paralyzes the tiny muscles around each sweat gland, which stops the glands from producing perspiration for three to six months,” says plastic surgeon Daniel Maman, MD, of 740 Park Plastic Surgery in New York City. HOW IT HELPS Armpit injections may sound extreme, but brides suffering from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) are ideal candidates for this treatment. “You won’t have to worry about sweat stains or body odor ruining your dress—even if you’re wearing long sleeves,” Maman says. And, because you’re treating a small surface area on the body, injecting your armpits doesn’t automatically mean you’ll sweat excessively in other places. HOW TO TIME IT Injections take three to five days to take effect. One treatment can last for up to six months. AVERAGE COST $1,200 to $2,000 per treatment for both armpits

How would you describe the Rime Arodaky bride? The Rime Arodaky bride, or babe, is a fearless rebel with a cheeky approach to life and an effortless sense of style. What trends are you loving right now? I’m really into bridal suits, jumpsuits and separates for a city hall wedding or any other occasion leading up to the ceremony. And, of course, I’ll always be a fan of dresses with daring backs and intricate lace details. What should brides wear to their other wedding celebrations? While there aren’t strict rules about what to wear to the events surrounding your wedding, there do seem to be some guidelines. Rime Arodaky, however, is about breaking with tradition and just being who you are. No matter how you define your style, the most important thing at the end of the day is to feel good in your skin. Choose outfits that stay true to your personality and work for your body type.

TIP

Is there a trick to pulling off a more fashion-forward look? I always tell brides being daring is the best accessory. Don’t be afraid to think outside the bridal box and take some fashion risks on your wedding day. For example, go for more structural silhouettes and graphic details if you can pull them off. Or, instead of wearing a more traditional veil, opt for oversize sleeves, asymmetrical ruffles, a crop top or a lace moto jacket. If heels aren’t your thing, wear your gown with biker boots or go barefoot. The possibilities are endless.

What’s the biggest mistake brides make when buying a dress? A lot of brides feel pressured to listen to too many people’s opinions when dress shopping. A bride FIND THE RIGHT BRIDAL SALON The Marketplace on The Knot Wedding Planner app makes it easy needs to trust her gut— to find dress salons. You Can Have It All!

Celebrity engagements get attention! Magazine coverage gives us a steady diet of mega-diamond engagement rings, and it’s easy to believe that these sizes are the norm. But when couples start the search for an engagement ring, it can often be an eye-opening experience when they find rings they desire and then start to reconcile their budget to match. The gap between what they want and what they can afford can be wide. There are many tips on buying a diamond. Want a brighter, whiter stone of better quality? You can trade down on size! Want a larger diamond? You can trade down on quality! But what if you could have a brighter, whiter looking diamond AND one that looks up to 60 percent larger? Sounds like it might meet both desires! Christopher Slowinski, who founded Christopher Designs, originally trained as an engineer. He started to apply engineering principles to the cutting of a diamond. After studying light performance and refraction of light within a diamond, then exacting the proportions and angles of the facets, he made a brilliant discovery. A diamond, like an iceberg, carries significant size and weight below what can be seen from the top. In the case of an iceberg, that’s the waters surface. In the case of a diamond that area is called “the girdle”—the widest point of the stone and usually the

point below which you cannot see any more of the diamond. Below the girdle, the bottom of a diamond contains a lot of the weight, but it’s usually not seen once the diamond is set. When buying a diamond, a key factor in price (one of the 4 Cs) is carat weight. Even though one may not see any of the diamond below the girdle, one pays for it! Slowinski discovered that if proportions and facets were modified to precise angles and sizes, the light return would be superior AND it would not be necessary to have so much weight hidden in a place it wouldn’t be seen. The result? A brighter, whiter-looking diamond that is larger in surface area than other diamonds of equal carat weight. L’Amour Crisscut diamonds, available in a variety of shapes, place more of the diamond into the visible area, resulting in a diamond that appears 30-60 percent larger. The size difference is astonishing when a 1.00 ct. L’Amour Crisscut diamond is compared to its generic counterpart. Another benefit of the cut is that the diamond appears whiter and brighter, bursting with color and sparkle! Because of Slowinski’s discovery, couples no longer need to choose either a larger diamond or a brighter, whiter look. They can have both!

Christopher Designs sets these sparkling cuts into the most popular engagement ring styles. Learn more about Christopher Designs and the unique cuts. Visit www.christopherdesigns.com.

PERFECT PAIRINGS

FOREST GREEN

There’s a match for every month of the year— consider your palette found.

Think of this hue as your new favorite filter— everything looks more luxe, glam and, well, wedding worthy through its lens. Work it into your day with one of these fresh ideas.

FALL A rich merlot makes for a moody and rustic look.

WINTER Teamed with navy, it’s preppy and totally timeless.

SPRING Zesty lemon yellow pumps up the party atmosphere.

160

K

GO FOR ALL THE GREENERY Vines, tropical leaves and branches are very right now. Score a garden-inspired look by trading floral centerpieces for runners of lush greenery.

SUMMER Punchy pink adds a playful, tropical twist.

BRING IT HOME You’re going to want to add these picks to your registry ASAP.

NAIL #BRIDESMAIDGOALS Deep emerald is a stunner on any skin tone, so your girls are sure to love the way they look. For a truly standout crew, kick it up a notch with sequins and a dramatic exposed back. SERVE A STATEMENT SLICE Jewel tones and metallics play well with art deco–style cakes, so ask your baker to design one that would make even Jay Gatsby jealous.

Amelia tufted storage ottoman, $180, Safavieh, Target.com

Green Envy table lamp, $460, Couture, Houzz.com

GIVE THE GENTS A LEG UP If the groom is game to be bold, have him swap a traditional tux for a stylish combo of a navy suit jacket and saturated green corduroys. Chic leather loafers optional, but obviously encouraged. ROCK A “SOMETHING GREEN” Be the first of your friends to wear “something green” instead of “something blue” ( you trendsetter, you). A gorgeous tennis bracelet or pair of glitzy earrings in emerald will be just the touch of sparkle your wedding look needs.

Etiquette

YOU R W EDDING W EBSITE VS. YOU R IN V I TAT ION SUITE

Not sure what info belongs on your wedding website rather than your invitations? It's cool— we're here to walk you through the proper etiquette. Any imperative info, like the date, time and location, should be front and center on your wedding invites, while details like directions and parking can live on your website. Same goes for your registry info—it's considered a bit, ahem, in your face, to include it right on the invites (guests aren't required to get you a gift, after all), so play it safe and add links to your website instead. Looking to host an adults-only event? Include that wording on your wedding website, and address the envelope to just the guests who are invited.

Your save-the-date cards and invitation suite are usually the first impression your guests will get of your wedding day vibe, so make sure your paper goods slay. Think about your whole vision for your day, then work with a stationer or designer to incorporate colors, textures, typography or even witty lingo that lets guests know they're about to have the most fun ever.

How you address your envelopes is a great way to indicate which members of a group or family are actually invited. If your affair is adults only, address the invite specifically to Mr. and Mrs. Jones instead of The Jones Family. Giving a bud a plus-one? Jane Smith and Guest is the way to go. If a guest isn't getting a plus-one, address the envelope just to the invitee—they should get the hint.

t i m e yo u r s e n d i n g —a n d receiving—right

With invitations getting more complex (embossed leather, anyone?), it's smart to take a trip to the post office before sending yours out. Have them weigh a completed suite, as well as review the calligraphy or lettering you've chosen for the address. Both an extra-hefty envelope or an address that can't be read digitally can equal more necessary postage, so it's good to know ahead of time if you need to snag some extra stamps.

Timing is everything when it comes to your invitations and save-the-dates. You want to give guests ample time to add you to their calendars, but not so much time that it happens to slip their minds. As a rule of thumb, save-thedates should go out six to eight months ahead of your wedding (a bit earlier if it's a destination bash), while invitations can be mailed six to eight weeks out, with an "RSVP by" date at least two weeks before the wedding. >>

Whether it's one pretty botanical or the lyrics to your favorite song, a stylish envelope liner is the exclamation point on your suite.

L O C A L M A P For a personal touch, work with a designer to create a map of your wedding area. Tip: Beyond your ceremony and reception locale, include favorite spots, like your go-to pub, karaoke joint or ice cream shop so guests can get in on some local fun.

It adds a luxe weight and texture to your suite and makes for an undeniably cool invitation that can double as artwork. B O L D T Y P E For an eye-catching statement, look no further than creative typography. One killer font is all it takes to ensure a total wow moment the second guests open the envelope. LETTERPRESS

Purists love the upscale effect a letterpressed invitation has. On a tighter budget? Choose one or two high-impact details to letterpress instead of the whole design.

V E L L U M The translucent paper can serve as an accent within your suite, a wrap to hold together all the individual pieces or the main material. Whatever way you use it, it's a stunner. We're calling it now—metallics are here to stay. Modern couples can work in the shine with geometric accents, while romantically minded duos may prefer a design with delicate gold calligraphy and line drawings. We love either.

VELLUM

Paper obsessed? The fun doesn't stop once you send out your invitation suites. There are tons of day-of paper goods that could benefit from an extrathoughtful touch. Start the day with a standout ceremony program—we love the idea of including printed vellum envelopes that hold confetti to toss after you seal the deal. Then get guests laughing with cheeky customized trivia napkins. Or kick your escort cards and dinner menus up a notch with unique designs or interactive features (like suspended paper airplanes with guests' names on them). Finally, end the evening with thoughtful favors, like your favorite caramel popcorn tied with a sweet (or funny) thank-you note.

you’re about to be a very in-demand duo

when to

H AV E Y O U R F I R ST DA NCE Whether you want to show off your salsa moves or wow with your (okay, slightly modified) rendition of Dirty Dancing’s signature scene, plan to have your first dance immediately after your entrance into the reception. If you’re not a pair who loves center stage, sway for a few minutes, then have your DJ or band segue right into an upbeat song. That’s your wedding party’s cue to storm the dance floor and get your guests moving.

GR EET YOU R GU E STS

During dinner tends to be the best time for speeches—everyone is sitting, and music isn’t blaring. The hosts (whether it’s your parents or yourselves) usually kick off the meal with a greeting, then the honor attendants follow soon after with their toasts. If other friends would like to share some stories, encourage them to speak at the rehearsal dinner, and keep the main event speeches short, sweet and PG-13. PG-

Before you race to the bar and down a signature cocktail, make time for a little schmoozing. To score face time with everyone from your college roomie to Great Aunt Vera, organize a receiving line as guests exit your ceremony. Not into that idea? Plan on using your cocktail hour (or part of dinner) to make the rounds and flash those new wedding rings.

SIGN THE K ETUBAH

We know what you’re thinking—ASAP, right? While the temptation to dig in may be strong, most couples wait until the last hour of the reception to start slicing. If you prefer a more private moment, simply do it to the side with your photog instead of making it a big to-do. Trust us, guests will be too busy on the dance floor to notice.

The ketubah is a Jewish marriage contract traditionally signed by the couple and their witnesses ahead of the wedding ceremony. Modern or mixed-faith couples often take the signing public and share the moment in front of all their guests, or even invite everyone present to sign their names onto an oversize document that doubles as art.

While these destinations and their resorts were all affected by the 2017 hurricanes, they’re now coming back stronger than ever— and are perfect for a romantic trip for two or your “I dos.” Here are just a few to have on your radar.

K

AFTER THE STORM

SECRET BAY DOMINICA, WEST INDIES WHAT TO KNOW Though it sustained significant damage during the hurricanes, Secret Bay is reopening in November and will feature brand-new amenities, like a restaurant and wellness center, as well as updated accommodations— including six free-standing villas, each with a private plunge pool. Looking for a lush backdrop for an intimate wedding? Exchange vows on one of Secret Bay’s secluded beaches, private decks or breathtaking cliff tops. MUST-DOS Get in touch with your wild side and go for a nature hike on the Waitukubuli National Trail, or sign up for night snorkeling to see nocturnal water life in action. At sunset, head to the on-site restaurant for locally sourced dishes and stunning panoramas. SecretBay.dm >>

WHAT TO KNOW After suffering from cosmetic damage, the Four Seasons—the largest employer on Anguilla—reopened in March with an island and resort blessing ceremony. Located on Barnes and Meads bays, the resort has 70 guest rooms, 50 suites (including its ocean-view studio rooftop suite) and 24 villas, which are perfect for getting ready with your bridesmaids or groomsmen before your ceremony on the terrace. WHAT TO KNOW Hawks Cay Resort, set to open by the end of this

BACHELORET TE GUIDE

New Orleans

EXACTLY WHERE TO STAY, EAT AND PLAY FOR A PREWEDDING BASH FOR THE BOOKS. BY SOPHIE ROSS

STAY Check in a short walk away from Bourbon Street at NOPSI Hotel and you’ll have a rooftop with a pool, bar and views at your disposal, and lots of Southern hospitality to boot. Or book the king suite—with more than enough room for four—at Hilton New Orleans in the French Quarter. EAT It doesn’t take reservations, but if you can get in (aka, make sure your crew can wake up at 8 a.m. or hire someone to stand in line for you—yes, that’s a thing ) renowned Galatoire’s offers a decadent brunch with seriously fun vibes and the Creole cuisine the city’s famous for. Otherwise, you can roll out of bed and head straight to Brennan’s (get the bananas Fosters for dessert), or find your hangover fix at Willa Jean in the Warehouse District with some homemade biscuits. For less conventional fare, go to Maypop for Southern-Asian fusion, or if you’re craving barbecue, try Blue Oak BBQ. And of course, don’t miss the sinful beignets at Café Du Monde.

Matching bachelore tte shir ts are always a good idea .

BACHELORETTE BREAKDOWN Combine a dose of Southern charm with a lack of open container laws and some of the best seafood you’ll find in the country, and you’ve got the eccentric city of New Orleans. The Big Easy is an obvious choice for a bachelorette bash (and not just during Mardi Gras) if you and your squad are looking for live music, open-air bars, delicious (fried) fare and shopping at the outdoor markets along Bourbon Street. French Quarter

NOPSI Hotel

Blue Oak BBQ

PLAY Balance out your meals with walking tours of the French Quarter, the oldest and most historic section of the city. Scope out some outdoor markets—and do some damage shopping—around Jackson Square, the Frenchmen Art Market, and the Garden and Arts districts. You can also hit up Haunted History Tours if you and your crew are in the mood to get spooked via a “haunted” pub crawl, voodoo altar visits or graveyard bus rides. Laissez les bon temps rouler (aka, let the good times roll). DRINK You have to hit up Bourbon Street where your bar options run the gamut— iconic ones include Pat O’Brien’s and Cat’s Meow. Swing by Drink Lab (make a reservation first) where you and your ladies can create your own craft cocktails in a private lounge setting with a mixology instructor. Another local haunt your girls will enjoy is The Carousel Bar & Lounge, which features—yes—a circular bar that slowly revolves like a carousel. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen. LISTEN New Orleans is famous for its live music and brass bands, and you’ll find the best jazz along Bourbon Street and the lesser known—but equally charming— Frenchmen Street. A neighborhood favorite is Cafe Negril, where you can dance the night away. You can also two-step with your ladies at The Maison, which features a wraparound second-floor balcony (a New Orleans staple) that will give you the backdrop you need for that perfect NOLA photo op.

Marrying Away? Don’t Miss These Wedding Website Must-Haves

TIP

THE RUN-DOWN

HOW TO GET THERE

W H E R E T O S TAY

INSIDER INFO

R E G I S T RY

Make your wedding website do work. Not sure where to begin? Head to TheKnot.com to choose from hundreds of free designs you can personalize. Oh, and we’ll help you along the way too. First things first, guests need to know the who-what-where-when of your nuptials. Include vital details along with an itinerary of events (only the ones everyone’s invited to), complete with locations and start times. Add any helpful extras too, like dress code (“on the beach—wear flats”) and online RSVPs.

Guests will be coming from everywhere, taking all sorts of transportation. Tell them the closest airports and train stations, plus the best driving routes and tips regarding traffic or planned construction. If taxis and Ubers are hard to come by at your destination, let people know and consider pre-arranging transportation. If your wedding locale is outside the US, indicate the necessary travel documents, like passports or visas. And don’t forget to share how guests can get to and from the wedding.

The easiest way to ensure affordable guest accommodations is to set up a hotel room block—or several. (HotelPlanner .com makes it easy.) You can suggest a few properties at various price points and alternatives like Airbnbs. Just make sure they’re all close to the main event.

Is there a hike at your destination that offers up some pretty awesome views? Or a spot that serves the best jerk chicken? Share those faves with guests. It’s likely your friends and fam will be making a little vacay out of your wedding, so give them plenty of options of what to see and do around the area.

Guests want to buy you something you want, so don’t keep that info to yourself. Share all of your registries on your wedding website, making them easy to find. This is especially important if you’re tying the knot away from home. Chances are, some of your guests may not be able to make the trip, but they’ll still want to celebrate you with a gift. Use The Knot universal registry to register for anything, anywhere (yes, anywhere). Or if your wedding weekend in the Bahamas is a kick-off to an island-hopping honeymoon, have guests contribute to your getaway through The Knot Newlywed Fund.

Guests may use your wedding as a little vacay of their own. Share some fun things to do on your website.

SET UP YOUR WEDDING WEBSITE We’re telling you—your wedding website is going to be your new best friend, especially for a destination affair. You can answer most of guests’ questions in one spot. Choose from so many fun (free!) design options on The Knot. And don’t forget to include personal details too, like your love story or wedding party bios.

Someone (*cough, Aunt Linda*) will inevitably have questions, especially since travel is involved. Let guests know how to contact you—whether it’s a wedding-specific email or text. And don’t forget to list a point person, like your planner or maid of honor, for the day of—so you can relax.

STATIONERY A watercolor suite that included a map of the Fiji islands readied 126 guests for the destination wedding. POOL PARTY Travelers were encouraged to “bring out their inner mermaid” for the Thursday celebration featuring boozy Blue Lagoon ice pops, doughnuts and local accessories. REHEARSAL The tiki-themed beach barbecue called for tropical prints and flower crowns. Partygoers sipped Fiji Fires (pineapple margaritas) and Tiki Tikis (passion fruit mojitos) and grazed from a Mongolian buffet, then took in performances by hula and fire dancers. LOCATION “It was important to incorporate all the beautiful things Fiji and its people have to offer,” says Sarah, who also organized waterfall tours.

hough Sarah Horowitz (34 and a photographer)—a self-described “total travel junkie”—and Euripides Poulidis (36 and a sales professional) globe-trot often, they chose to wed in a place they’d never visited: Fiji. “I loved the idea of making new memories in a new place,” Sarah says. The bash kicked off on Wednesday, with guests partaking in a kava (the unofficial drink of Fiji) ceremony. On Saturday, the “jungle-chic” wedding started with rain forest “I dos,” followed by a dinner of wild fern salad, fresh fish, vudi vakasoso (plantains baked in coconut sauce) and other local eats. A backdrop at the venue read “our greatest adventure,” truly summing up the spirit of the newlyweds and the gathering. —Becky Murray

BRIDESMAIDS Inspired by the color of ginger flowers, Sarah asked her bridesmaids to choose their own pink gowns. DÉCOR Monstera leaves, gold flatware and macramé place mats, plus arrangements with protea and elephant ear, brought exotic flair to the tablescapes. FIRST DANCE Sarah’s friend covered “Strangers” by The Kinks on the ukulele. Euripides sent Sarah the lyrics once they started dating, then played the song during his proposal. CEREMONY “It felt like a rain forest church,” Sarah says of the jungle location. “Guests could hear the waterfall and the Fijian singers, who performed out of view, making it seem like the rain forest was singing to them.” Bamboo baskets were filled with petals, and guests kept cool with hand-held fans.

DRESS With the help of two seamstresses, Becky transformed her mother’s original long-sleeve wedding gown into a custom lace appliqué design. “We removed the top layers of tulle and converted one of those layers into a veil,” she says. CEREMONY The university’s Lee Chapel was a fitting choice for the ceremony, thanks to its storied past. “Danny and I attended formal gatherings there as students, so it felt fitting to mark a milestone like marriage within its walls,” Becky says. BRIDESMAIDS Becky outfitted her bridal party in metallic jacquard floral-print skirts, and they chose the tops themselves. BLOOMS Waxflower, ranunculus and garden roses made up her bouquet, while gold-painted magnolia leaf wreaths adorned the chapel doors.

even years after meeting as sophomores at Washington and Lee University, Becky Mickel (26 and a real weddings editor at The Knot) and Danny Murray (26 and an English teacher) returned to the site of their first date for their autumn nuptials—this time, with 165 guests in tow. “Our wedding had a ‘back to school’ vibe, given we’re alumni and we invited many of our fellow classmates back to campus to celebrate,” Becky says. School buses carted partygoers to and from the reception, where magnolia accents reflected the bride’s Louisiana upbringing. “Danny’s from the Northeast and I’m a die-hard Southerner, so we set out to merge our two backgrounds with a oneof-a-kind party,” she says. —Rachel Sylvester

MENU In lieu of a seated dinner, Southern fare like pimento grilled cheese and chicken and biscuits was served at interactive food stations. RECEPTION The newlyweds shared a lively first dance to Earth, Wind & Fire’s cover of “Gotta Get You Into My Life.” “Kicking off the dancing with an upbeat tune like that set the party off right,” Becky says. DÉCOR White pumpkins, gold flatware, magnolia-shaped votives and fruit-filled centerpieces topped dining tables arranged under a clear-top tent. DESSERT Three distinct cakes were called in for the occasion: a cinnamon-cream-cheese-filled carrot cake, a lemon poppy seed confection and “the ultimate coconut cake” shipped directly from Becky’s favorite Charleston restaurant, Peninsula Grill.

TRADITIONS Once the paebaek, or bowing ceremony, wrapped, Dongwoo’s parents threw jujubes (dates) in the pair’s direction, representing healthy children. FASHION “I’d been looking for this Princess Leia/Star Wars aesthetic that’s sort of ‘space Western,’ ” Lesley says of her silk crepe gown. TRANSPORTATION The newlyweds left the church in Lesley’s dad’s ’70s Chevelle. BRIDESMAIDS The crew wore gold gowns and styled their braided updos with pearl and jade hair combs as a nod to Dongwoo’s Korean culture. They carried eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, ferns and gyp. STATIONERY Lesley designed the day’s paper pieces using white foil and rich texture. “It was something I dreamed of more than the dress, flowers or anything else,” she says.

love for design united art directors Lesley Griffith (31) and Dongwoo Kim (30) from the start. Particularly, they bonded over their respect for minimalist pioneer Donald Judd. Lesley, a Texas native, had her heart set on a wedding in Marfa, and as fate would have it, they were able to book The Chinati Foundation, the home of Judd’s work, as their venue. “It was kind of full circle and a dream come true for us,” Dongwoo says. The creative pair styled their day with textbook Judd elements: cement and aluminum décor and light-as-air accents. In addition to focusing on fine art, they also worked to blend their Korean and Texan backgrounds. “We wanted to create new traditions together,” Lesley says. —BM

ATTIRE The grooms and their party wore paisley ties. Andy added orange lining, stitching and buttons to his suit, while Matt incorporated purple lining. CENTERPIECES Laser-cut votives and wood boxes holding snapdragons, ranunculus, roses, begonias, eucalyptus, scabiosa and lisianthus decorated the tables. CEREMONY The to-be-weds walked down the aisle with their moms, then said their vows in front of an autumn-inspired backdrop. COCKTAIL HOUR Guests sipped Matt-hattans and Bow-cardis, named after the grooms CAKE “We knew we wanted to incorporate nature, plants and as much orange as possible,” Andy says of their fondant treat: an ombré cake that topped a treelike tier and was finished with sugar flowers.

ndy Bow (below left, 28 and self-employed) is responsible for the largely orange palette of his and Matt Thompson’s (27 and a senior analyst) October nuptials. He’s always been a man of bold tastes, surprising Matt with a full-on proposal even after the pair had quietly decided over sushi that they’d make their status official. Months later, they attended a wedding at Jorgensen Farms and knew they’d found their spot. “I liked the idea of having a wedding outside in nature with trees—but the greenhouse was really what attracted us to the venue,” Matt says. The location also informed the day’s style. “I wanted the wedding to feel rustic, modest, colorful and fresh—like a greenhouse,” Andy says. —BM

REAL WEDDINGS

BRIDESMAIDS “I’m an only child, so my friends are my family—they’re everything to me,” Stephanie says of sharing a sentimental first look with her bridal party. “The expressions on their faces were priceless.” DESSERT Slices of salted pretzel, German chocolate and confetti cakes from Milk Bar were served, along with pineapple and mango gummy bears that doubled as sweet party favors. PROCESSIONAL With no young family members to appoint as flower girls, Stephanie and Storm designated their grandmothers as the day’s honorable “flower grannies.” “They were there to spread love and rose petals,” Stephanie says. “We told them our vision for the day and they both showed up dressed to impress.”

s much as Stephanie Williams (32 and an actress) and Storm Gunraj (34 and an area manager) planned and prepped leading up to their October nuptials, they never would’ve guessed that temperatures would reach a sweltering 80 degrees on that day. “I threw on a second dress about an hour before our wedding was over because of the heat,” Stephanie says of her spontaneous outfit change. Both a live band and DJ performed reggae and hip-hop hits during the reception, which was outfitted with berry, coral and dusty-pink details. “We danced our butts off,” Stephanie says. “People would try to talk to us throughout the night, but Storm and I would just run off toward the dance floor.” —RS

hey say home is where the heart is, and it’s a notion that rings true for design-minded duo Linda Phan and Drew Scott of HGTV fame. Despite being over 6,000 miles away from home on the day of their “I dos” in Puglia, Italy, the couple managed to draw inspiration from their Los Angeles abode by cutting into a towering cake painted with a gilded herringbone pattern. “The design mirrored our floorboards,” Linda says. “We wanted every personal detail to have our signatures on it.” Linda honored her groom’s heritage with a lisianthus- and jasmine-filled bouquet wrapped in fabric from the Scott clan tartan, while a tea ceremony paid homage to her Chinese roots. “My favorite moment was holding Drew’s hands at the altar,” Linda says of their ceremony, which called for a bagpipe performance and seating signage that encouraged guests to choose a side based on their pizza or pasta preference. A risotto-fueled dance party followed, where 300 partygoers celebrated until 5 a.m.

BAROQUE BEAUTIES Characterized by shiny metallics, washed-out hues and a more-is-more attitude, this style marries all the vibes of Romanticism with a fresh, timeless spin. Set the scene with an artsy door illustration (as the ceremony backdrop) and plush tufted seating for an ultra-luxe place to promise, well, forever. LET THEM EAT CAKE (AND WEAR FLOWERS) 1. Give your tiered confection a Marie Antoinette–approved upgrade with a wash of pink watercolor and gold fondant detailing. 2. Provide guests with an interactive way to find their seats, like with escort cards tucked between the pages of vintage reads. 3. Make everyone feel like a guest of honor and invite loved ones to adorn themselves with buds at a DIY floral station. 4. For a lush bouquet, ask your florist to work with varying textures in a similar hue, like this sweet pea, rose and ranunculus arrangement. The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.

The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

This slim, form-fitting silhouette hugs the body from head-to-toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

wedding party 101 The least you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.

d

bridesmaids • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette.

2 2 2 2 2

• When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the bridesmaid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the bridesmaid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your bridesmaids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best.

2

• The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the bridesmaids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your girls. Email works great for this.

scoop neckline

one-shoulder neckline

groom & groomsmen • Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar.

280

• The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel

notched lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot.

peaked lapel

• Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, the suit will pay for itself.

flower girls & ring bearers • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 4 Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse dutyfree bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks.

4

9 If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise

5

10 Dance the night away in “irie” oblivion to live soca, reggae or calypso at Harbour Lights or hot spot Sugar Ultra Lounge.

First made 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors.

1 The three islands of Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique are located in the eastern Caribbean at the southern extremity of the Windward Islands, only 100 miles north of Venezuela. 2 International flights stop at Maurice Bishop International Airport, and visitors who continue have only a short hop by inter-island charter to Lauriston Airport in Carriacou. 3 The driest season is between January and May. Even during the rainy season, from June to December, it rarely rains for more than an hour at a time and generally not every day. River Antoine Rum Distillery, the oldest functioning distillery in the Caribbean, is a must-see for visitors. Using only locally BEST MONTHS TO GO sourced sugar cane, the rum is handmade January to May by the same process (and on some of the same equipment!) that was used when the distillery first opened in the late 1700s. 2 Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your groom loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

2 Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds. 3

Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 4

6 To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay. 8 While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour. 10

Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves your man’s never seen before! SHUTTERSTOCK

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

5 The Blue Lagoon was filmed in Port Antonio, called the “most exquisite port on Earth.” It’s a less-developed gem on the northeast side of the island.
