EDITOR’S LET TER actual records were placed at every seat at the Rime Arodaky runway show

In theory, that’s an amazing thing. But when you need to make pointed decisions about everything from your cake to the escort card display, never-ending inspiration can sometimes become more of a burden than a blessing. Take Bridal Fashion Week for example. In October, my team and I attended over 60 runway shows and saw over 1,000 dresses all within seven days—talk about overload. How on earth were we supposed to make sense of all those incredible gowns? Eventually, I came to realize the week wasn’t meant for making sense of anything, but allowing us to be moved by what we saw. Lo and behold, by the end, the trends were starting to become clear—I had favorite gowns in my mind and I could see how we were going to put together a curated trend report for you. When it comes to your wedding, I encourage you to do the same. Immerse yourself in all the inspiration you can handle, but don’t force yourself to make decisions until you’re ready. Eventually, the right choices will make themselves known.

CONTRIBUTORS

TOM CORBETT PHOTOGRAPHER/DIRECTOR Cover and “Bright Whites Big City” (p. 230)

How can I make my bridal portraits feel unexpected? I like to be very free and flexible when shooting. To capture a more unique photograph, ask your photographer to mix up the camera position or angle. Also, putting wedding dresses in nonwedding situations (like we did in this issue’s fashion feature on the streets of New York) helps a shot feel a bit edgier and less “bridal.” @tomcorbettnyc

SEYUN KIM

FOUNDER, RICE & FLOWER “Color Crush: Dusty Lavender” (p. 163)

I’m originally from South Korea where buttercream flowers are very popular. I love how buttercream allows you to create elaborate details and texture, while still tasting delicious, so I began experimenting and making my own designs. Sugar and fondant cakes have been the status quo for so long, and I’m trying to broaden what’s possible when it comes to how cakes look and taste. It’s more than a trend—it’s a wider creative canvas. @riceandflower

What’s your favorite way to incorporate personalized details into weddings? Interesting installations can take personalization to the next level, like an escort card display where each card is a portrait of the guest, or a photo booth vignette that incorporates family pictures. Installations give me the freedom to create something truly memorable and one of a kind for my couples. @rocketscience.events

ASSISTANT MANAGING EDITOR

Have you seen any original ideas in weddings? I love how couples are creatively including their pets in their weddings. While sometimes it’s logistically difficult to have your furry friend physically at the wedding, brides and grooms are featuring their dogs and cats in different ways, like save-the-dates, props for their photo booth and cookie favors (like our Dream Wedding couple did). @mbouse01

The Knot Gala OCTOBER 9, 2017, NEW YORK CITY

We closed out Bridal Fashion Week in style with our eighth annual soiree. Inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, event designer Emily Clarke transformed the iconic New York Public Library into an enchanting forest full of color and surprises.

From left: The Knot cofounder Carley Roney and Dream Wedding couple Amanda Clifton and Elena Delle Donne (see their wedding on p. 212)

STRIKING INVITES

2

Set the stage for a memorable evening with an eye-catching invite. Moody hues, holographic foil and laser-cut details are fresh and right now. MAKE IT YOURS: Grab invitees' attention with colorful, oversize envelopes. Incorporate personal details into the suite's design for an extra-special touch.

Self-serve bars and food installations give guests something to talk about and do (they can help themselves when the mood strikes). MAKE IT YOURS: Treat friends and family to your favorite foods or a local specialty. Present choices in a unique way for maximum impact.

3

PHOTO BOOTH FUN

Swap a photo booth with a portrait lounge (above) complete with a live shooter, or opt for an impressive living backdrop (right). Guests will feel like total A-listers. MAKE IT YOURS: Create an Insta-worthy scene for your ceremony or escort cards that can double as a photo backdrop at your reception. >>

EMILY CLARKE GAVE US THE SKINNY ON PLANNING THE PARTY OF THE YEAR.

THE KNOT: What's the one thing every party should have?

5

Personality is an absolute must. We encourage couples to find a few areas to customize, like an escort card display or backdrop for the band. Keep in mind, people spend 90 percent of their time focused on the band or bar.

OUR PROS

TK: What are the best ways to stay on budget?

EC: Get clever and choose an impactful element to focus dollars toward instead of spreading the budget throughout every space. TK: What was your favorite detail at The Knot Gala? EC: The bathtub! I had never seen a photo booth bathtub before (pictured above) and this one was such a hit.

6

UNEXPECTED EXTRAS

Being a good host means anticipating the needs of guests. Serve a refreshing treat alongside the dance floor or offer up pairs of Rescue Flats for aching feet. MAKE IT YOURS: Everyone loves swag. Charm (and thank) guests with a cozy wrap they can layer on that evening, or edible breakfast treats for the morning after.

Focus on impactful designs— you don't have to over-produce an entire room to have a wow factor.

LIVE PERFORMERS

Complement musical ensembles with unique performances, like LED-clad ballerinas, woodland creatures and floral statues. MAKE IT YOURS: Delight guests with bonus entertainment such as an electric violin solo before the cake cutting or a marching band send-off.

LUXE LIGHTING

The right glow makes any atmosphere more magical. Use uplighting to match the mood of your party theme. MAKE IT YOURS: Designate spaces by mixing up the lighting—think candlelit ceremony, dinner under bistro lights and a colorfully lit dance floor for the after-party.

HOT TOPIC

I’ve always paid for my own dress when I’ve been a bridesmaid. But, for my wedding, my bridesmaids are saying I should pay for their dresses. Who should really be on the hook for the attendant attire? @Casadena It’s common for the bridesmaids to pay. However, I think it’s ridiculous to have to pay for the honor [of being a bridesmaid].

@charlotte989875 Ask them each for their dress budget and choose something within the lowest budget. If you want something more expensive, you should make up the difference.

TKM18SPR_FOB_TheKnot.com_Social Scene.L [P].indd 54

@MyNameIsNot Attendants typically pay for their own attire. If you require specific accessories, you have to pay for them. And no, it’s not the bridesmaid gift.

You no longer have to choose between a traditional wish list and a feel-good charity registry. With The Knot Gifts Back (TheKnot.com/registry/ charity), you can have the best of both worlds. Simply set up your conventional registry— think china, bedding and cookware—with The Knot and for each gift purchased, we’ll donate a percentage to the charity of your choosing, including Special Olympics and the American Red Cross, at no additional cost to you or your guests.

The Knot All-In-One Wedding Planner app is the only app that pulls together your vision, pros and guests—and puts planning in the palm of your hand.

K

PHOTOGRAPH BY YUNHEE KIM

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE The first thing you’ll do in our app is take an image-based style quiz to help zero in on your wedding vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision that you can easily share with local pros with one click. This way, everyone knows exactly what you mean when you say “rustic chic.” KEEP ORGANIZED You’ll find all of your planning to-dos, and when to do them, in the app’s checklist. Best of all, it’s customizable to your celebration. If you’re not hiring an officiant because your uncle is doing the honors, that to-do disappears off your list. Worried about staying on budget? The app’s budgeting tool tells you how much to put toward individual tasks, and tracks overall spending. COMPILE YOUR DREAM TEAM We’ll take the info you share with the app and provide you with personalized vendor suggestions based on your location, style and budget. You can also browse thousands of award-winning pros on your own through The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Keep an eye on your registries straight from the app. Your wedding day isn’t the only time you’ll receive gifts (there’s the engagement party and shower too), so make it easy on guests and keep your wish list full of options. Already have everything you need? Check out The Knot Newlywed Fund, which lets you ask for cash gifts to put toward things like your honeymoon or a down payment on your first home. THINK OF YOUR GUESTS Give guests all the info they’ll need, like hotel details and registry links, in one pretty package with the app’s wedding website feature. We’ll guide you every step of the way while you design your site. You can also sync it with your phone contacts (to save time address hunting) and use it to stay on top of guests who haven’t RSVP’d.

Plan Your Wedding on Your Phone

GET YOUR DAY-OF TIMELINE As you check off your to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed timeline behind the scenes to help ensure everything goes off without a hitch on your wedding day. Share the schedule of events, arrival and set-up times, and more with all of your vendors, your wedding party and parents. This way, everyone will be on the same page—and you can focus on your walk down the aisle and making it the best day ever. I've tried on so many different dresses and I'm feeling really overwhelmed— what should my next step be? Mark Ingram: Relax! Sometimes women put too much pressure on themselves to find “the one.” You already found your perfect person, so finding the dress should be a joyful part of the planning process. Start by recalling the styles you were first drawn to—did you love every cap sleeve dress you tried on? Next time you shop, plan to go with just one or two people whose opinion you really trust, as too many can confuse you. A lot of brides actually find it easiest to make their final dress decision while shopping alone. Beyond that, consider your venue and what will work with the location, style and theme you've planned. Most importantly, focus on what makes you feel good.

OF COUPLES INCORPORATE TRADITIONAL ETHNIC ELEMENTS INTO THEIR WEDDING

What's a US spot for my bachelorette party that isn't been there, done that? Harmony Walton: While the tried-andtrue boozy bachelorette weekend is always a hit, for a unique trip, seek out a locale that can pamper your group and offer fun activities a bit different from the typical beach day. For instance, Park City, Utah, and Beaver Creek, Colorado, offer summer and winter activities that mix spa treatments and shopping with a bit of adventure. Skiing and snowshoeing will get your heart racing (and make a decadent hot chocolate taste even better), while rafting and horseback riding are good reasons to enjoy a massage.

PLANNING

My fiancé and I come from two different cultural backgrounds and are planning a fusion wedding. What's the best way to honor traditions from both sides? Shawna Gohel: There are so many ways to combine cultural traditions, so have fun and think outside the box—whether that means choosing fashions from both cultures or choreographing a dance to music from each background. Start by looking at your families' heritages to see if there's any overlap between the two. If so, this can be a sweet shared ritual to showcase on your day. Or choose one of your favorite customs from each side. Practice both or combine the two with a modern twist for a unique spin on the expected. If you'd rather keep it simple, include a cultural element in traditional “I dos,” like adding Indian kundan jewelry to a white gown. Don't be afraid to break the rules—do what feels right for you both.

TALK TO A LAWYER Luckily for us, both of our families know lawyers who gave us some advice. Since our deposit was never cashed and the contract wasn’t returned, most agreed if we went to court, at best we’d receive the amount of money it cost to rent the venue—but the fees could be more expensive than that sum, and we still wouldn’t have a place for our wedding. We were advised to settle the matter out of court. If you find yourself in a similar position, speak with someone who understands how small-claims courts work in your area.

For New Jersey–based newlyweds Kaylin Roth and Anthony Cerbo, their charming country celebration at the groom’s family’s tree farm was a true labor of love. Inspired by Americana folk artist Charles Wysocki, the crafty couple pulled off a personalized fete without blowing their budget, thanks to reimagined household items, homegrown favors and the help of generous guests. BIGGEST SPLURGE Catered barbecue for 175 guests proved to be the priciest expense, but the couple cut costs by encouraging partygoers to BYOP (bring your own pie). THRIFTY DÉCOR “We looked at what we already owned and thought, ‘How can we use it for our wedding?’ ” Kaylin says of incorporating thrifted mugs, crochet blankets and vintage kitchen items into the design. “Shopping our own home brought the cost down and really reflected our style.”

VENDOR SAVINGS Anthony’s mother put her floral skills to good use, his aunt baked a naked cake for the occasion, and Kaylin’s sister Jessica, a professional photographer, documented the day with the help of a second shooter. AFFORDABLE FAVORS Guests picked their own gourds from the “Marry Me Pumpkin Patch” at Cerbo’s Christmas Tree Farm. “They were grown from the seeds of the pumpkin Anthony used to propose a year earlier,” Kaylin says of the seasonal gifts.

in cool-toned looks that can go from city hall to the city streets without so much as undoing a button. The groom and his crew should look

united in their style, but allow the man of the hour to stand out in a

sleek navy suit accented with black patent shoes. His groomsmen will

play the part of right-hand men to

stylish perfection in gray suits, mixand-match accessories and brown leather lace-ups that keep with the slightly more casual vibe.

FORMAL fete

Black tie doesn’t have to mean all-black tuxes—especially when the venue is a chic

hotel rather than a formal ballroom. If you ask us, a white dinner jacket with black shawl

collar gives a just-as-fancy, yet less expected touch. For the rest of his guys, we’re in favor of gray tuxedos and black patent dress shoes that add up to one polished wedding party. The final touch? Black bow ties to bring the whole look together.

MODERN prep If you’re tying the knot at a yacht or country club, take a cue from classic

American sportswear. Dress the groom in the perfect preppy pairing: a bold blue suit with crisp white shirt and tie. In gray three-piece suits, the groomsmen complement (but don’t overshadow) the leading man, echoing his maritime color choice with coordinated shirts and accessories in varying shades of blue.

GARDEN party

4

What’s a celebration without a dash of whimsy? At an outdoor

venue, your attire can skew as lowkey or extravagant as you please— though we’re partial to a groom in a three-piece light gray suit. This

dapper look elevates the formality

just enough to set him apart, with-

out taking away from the laid-back nature of a garden soiree. For the

groomsmen, crisp tan suits paired

with pastel accessories make for a

relaxed, but still put-together party.

BREAK the RULES

Put a twist on the classics with these tips to stir up a little fashion anarchy.

1

Mix your patterns.

The mismatched trend is a must-try. No one said your pocket square has to match your tie.

2

Wear white on white.

Pair black with blue.

Brown is no longer the only option. Black shoes look sleek and modern against a sharp navy suit.

3

4

TKM18SPR_FOB_Mens_Wearhouse_Advertorial.l [P].indd 10

Sport some fancy feet.

Nothing makes a statement quite like a flashy pair of socks. Pick a colorful pattern that’ll make for a fun photo op.

HEATHER BALLIET, OWNER OF EVENT AND STYLING COMPANY AMOROLOGY, SHARES HER WEDDING STYLE TIPS. How did you get your start in the wedding industry?

@amorology

What are your favorite ways to personalize a wedding? We always love it when our clients are excited about their escort card display—it allows for a big punch of personality and is so fun for us to create. I pull inspiration for it from a couple’s favorite things, whether it’s lyrics to a song, an activity they do together or the story of how they met. One couple’s love story included meeting at a summer camp in sixth grade, so we went with a summer camp wedding theme, complete with an escort card wall of thermoses and hot cocoa camping mugs (pictured above). Another pair became Mr. and Mrs. Weatherall, which inspired a weather vane backdrop for their escort cards (pictured left) as well as their Perfect Weather Forever theme. What trends do you think will be big this year? We’re seeing a lot more brides and grooms willing to step out of the typical dining experience for their reception. We enjoy mixing and matching seating options for guests, incorporating both low tables with poufs and pillows, as well as traditional dining tables. It creates an atmosphere that’s elevated yet relaxed.

Where should couples search for inspiration for their wedding style? Look within and think about what makes you happy and what you want surrounding you on your day. We believe every detail is an opportunity to tell a story. Those extra touches are what breathe life into an event that could otherwise just be ordinary, and they create an unforgettable experience for the to-be-weds and their loved ones.

Why should to-be-weds hire a wedding planner? Hiring a pro means you get to worry less if something doesn’t go exactly according to plan. A perfect example of this is a wedding we did that started as a backyard reception but had to be moved indoors due to an impromptu rainstorm. Guests ended up dining throughout the hallways of the family home among unique pieces of art they had collected over the years. Our plan B turned into a beautiful plan A, which was a happy surprise. Pros are full of ideas, so put faith in your planner’s vision and expertise and they can take it from there. When our clients are trusting of us, we’re able to push the envelope and create something extraordinary.

FROM TOP: ACQUA PHOTO; JEN WOJCIK PHOTOGRAPHY; BALLIET: DEVON DONNAHOO PHOTOGRAPHY

OUR PRO Heather Balliet is an event designer and stylist based in San Diego, where she lives with her husband and four children.

I actually used to be a social worker, working mostly with families during tough times. After planning my own wedding in 2003, several of our guests reached out and asked me to help with their weddings. Eventually, one thing led to another and here I am with my own event business. I like to say that this career really found me—and in some ways I’m still doing family therapy, but during a happier occasion.

3 SIGNATURE EATS

169

Signature sips are almost expected, so instead couples are claiming the food. Ask guests to choose from “his” or “hers” entrée options, or name passed hors d’oeuvres. “Food will continue to be the real centerpiece of the reception,” says Annie Lee of Daughter of Design in New York City.

SINGLE-STEM BOUQUETS

4

Want to honor a loved one at your ceremony, or simplify your attendant bouquets? Single flowers are making a comeback—and a statement. Opt for a sculptural stem, like an oversize tropical leaf, or a big-headed bloom, like a peony or dinnerplate dahlia, for maximum effect. >>

ALL ABOUT THE SLEEVES

8

A RETURN TO COLOR “It’s been an era of neutrals but now brides and grooms are inspired by jewel tones and are playing with patterns like floral prints,” says Lynn Easton of Easton Events in Charleston, South Carolina. Choose a palette that represents the vibe of your celebration and your personality or taste as a couple.

6

THE WEDDING PARTY REIMAGINED

Who says you can only have bridesmaids and groomsmen? Mix up your attendants with bridesmen and groomswomen. Or honor certain relatives in other special ways— flower grandmas, anyone?

TKM18SPR_STYLE_PLAN_20_Things_We_Are_Loving.L [P].indd 170

PASSED CAKE BITES “Let’s face it: By the time the cake is cut, everyone is on the dance floor—so bring the cake to them,” says Madison Lee of Madison Lee Cakes in New York City. Have your baker make a gorgeously decorated, mostly fake cake for the cutting and photo op, plus bite-size pieces to pass as guests get down.

ROAMING ENTERTAINMENT STATEMENT ESCORT CARD DISPLAYS

Invite guests to find their seats with an Insta-worthy installation. “It’s a great place to incorporate your shared interests or play up a fun wedding theme,” says Emily Clarke of Emily Clarke Events in Dallas.

Hire a live artist. “It’s like a photo booth, but better,” says Jove Meyer of Jove Meyer Events in Brooklyn, New York. The artist will quietly observe guests sipping champagne or catching up with friends, sketch them and then surprise them with a keepsake portrait.

COCKTAIL RECEPTIONS Ditch the seating charts for a standing soiree. By opting for a cocktail-style event, you’re giving guests more opportunities to mix, mingle and party. Just be sure everyone leaves as full as if they enjoyed a sit-down dinner, and have seating areas sprinkled throughout the room. >>

We love bending the rules, and switching up the order of events keeps guests guessing. Some couples are hosting intimate ceremonies on Friday night and celebrating with a party on Saturday, while others opt for cocktail hour preceremony.

PERSONALIZED PAPER When it comes to paper, “opt for the unexpected, like gold foil on deep jewel tones, or play with interesting textures, like leather and suede,” says Heather Balliet of Amorology in San Diego. And illustrations continue to trend as a perfect way to personalize an invitation suite— anything from a monogram to furry friends is fair game.

16 FLAVORFUL CONFECTIONS Step aside basic vanilla and chocolate—what’s inside the cake is becoming just as important as the design. Flavors and fillings are getting a delicious update—think cookies and cream, confetti or more exotic pairings like bourbon and whipped mocha.

THE OTHER FIRST LOOK Your first look with your spouse-to-be is huge—but we bet there’s another VIP in your life (or five besties who stood by your side through months of planning) who would enjoy an official reveal too. Stage a second first look with your mom, dad, bridesmaids— anyone important—and bring your photographer along to capture their priceless reactions.

12/12/17 2:10 PM

FOREGOING THE FAVOR Couples are prioritizing the experience over a simple takeaway. Instead of favors, treat your guests to “extras” during the wedding. Set up a pretty lipstick touch-up bar, serve a passed after-dinner treat or switch up the entertainment throughout your celebration.

Austin, Texas

EXACTLY WHERE TO STAY, EAT AND PLAY FOR A PREWEDDING BASH FOR THE BOOKS. BY RACHEL SYLVESTER

STAY Book a posh poolside bungalow at Hotel Saint Cecilia, rest up in a retro-inspired room at Lone Star Court or take a load off at Native Experiential Hostel, a communal space that boasts bunk beds and a coffee bar for that necessary pre- or post-party caffeine kick.

Capture a group pic at one of the city’s celebrated murals. BACHELORETTE BREAKDOWN With top-notch taco joints, delectable barbecue and dozens of open-air bars that line the length of Rainey and Sixth streets, it’s no wonder Austin is alright, alright, alright. Texas’s eccentric state capitol is an obvious bachelorette option if you and your squad want to keep things “weird” with a prewedding retreat full of craft brews, live music, lowkey (and delicious) fare and outdoor activities at serene sites like Zilker Park and Mount Bonnell.

PLAY Balance out a boozy brunch with paddleboarding on the Colorado River or yoga at The Infinite Monkey Theorem, an urban winery that’s also home to weekly trivia and tastings. Another option: Take your revelry to the river with a tubing trip down the Guadalupe or San Marcos. Just pack sunscreen, a waterproof speaker and an afternoon’s worth of ice-cold wine or beer. DRINK Swing by Kitty Cohen’s for Instagramable afternoon cocktails, or spend a leisurely late-afternoon happy hour in Lenior’s wine garden with halfoff bottles of rosé. Start your postdinner party with inventive punch bowls at Whisler’s on East Sixth Street before sipping spirits at Garage, an unassuming bar tucked inside a parking garage on Colorado Street. LISTEN Two-step with your squad at Donn’s Depot or The Continental Club, or settle in at Scoot Inn, an eclectic dive bar where indie bands take the stage. Searching for a space large enough to accommodate your entire group? You’ll find plenty of legroom, live music and over 100 beers on tap at Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden on Rainey Street, or check out Icenhauer’s and The White Horse on Comal Street for must-hear local lineups.

We define a destination wedding as being 200 miles or more from where you (and most likely many of your guests) live. The term usually conjures up images of sandy beaches, old-world Europe and passport-required flights, right? But if you’re not crossing oceans, you may be having a “domestination wedding”—yes, we gave it a name. This type of celebration takes place in the continental US, but still requires most of your guests to pack their bags, stay overnight, and maybe even book flights. So whether it’s a true destination, or you’re just celebrating in your old hometown, here’s some planning know-how for both kinds of weddings.

Athens: The Athens Gate Hotel

Mykonos: Votsalaki Boutique Resort

Santorini: Oia Mare Villas; Cavo Bianco

STANDOUT STAY Newlyweds Sabrina and Cam kicked off their trip to Greece in Athens with one night at The Athens Gate Hotel. They then traveled to Votsalaki Boutique Resort in Mykonos to check out Paradise Beach. But Oia Mare Villas in Santorini was the pair’s favorite stay during their getaway. “It’s where people dream of spending their honeymoon,” Sabrina says of the cliffside resort, which offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

HONEYMOON HIGHLIGHT The pair enjoyed an afternoon aboard a semiprivate boat while in Santorini. “We cruised to different beaches, visited a hot spring and ate fresh seafood on the boat,” Sabrina says. “It was the perfect mix of romance and adventure—there was nothing more breathtaking than watching the sun set over the water.”

MEMORABLE MEAL The mussels at Oia’s Amoudi Bay come highly recommended, as does an authentic Greek meal at one of the numerous spots lining the streets of Little Venice in Mykonos, including Kastro’s. While in Santorini, Sabrina suggests buying a bottle of wine at Mesogaia in Kamari Beach and taking in the sunset, then heading to dinner at Metaxy Mas.

TRAVEL TIP Capturing quality photos was a must for Sabrina and Cam, who hired a professional destination photographer from Flytographer to follow them around Greece for an afternoon. “It was nice to be in the moment together without having to worry about taking our own photos everywhere we went,” Sabrina says. Another useful honeymoon hack: Ask your hotels about their private transfer amenities. “It’s probably the most cost-effective way to get from place to place,” Sabrina says.

MUST-SEE SIGHTS Adjacent to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, The Athens Gate Hotel afforded the pair unparalleled vistas of the nearby Acropolis from its eighth-floor rooftop lounge. When they weren’t exploring the ancient citadel, Sabrina and Cam rented ATVs for no-fuss travel between local vineyards, including Santorini’s Domaine Sigalas winery.

DÉCOR A blend of various types of roses, peonies, dahlias, ranunculus, weeping podocarpus and more provided the main color for the event—everything else, like linens and furniture, stuck to neutral tones. “We didn’t want to compete with nature,” Sari says. STATIONERY All the paper goods were hand-painted for a dip-dye look, which was re-created on the cake. COCKTAILS As a musical trio played, guests sipped signature drinks with muddled blueberries and snacked on inventive canapes like a caprese salad with olive oil in tiny pipettes.

ari (25) and Alexander (Alex) Diamond (30 and a lawyer) headed back to the place in Alex’s native Alberta where they first said “I love you” for a colorful, rustic celebration. Using the scenery of Bow River as their natural décor, the pair enhanced the celebration with bold florals, pops of teal and hints of gold. An enormous botanical installation hung above the dance floor, where a live band kept the party going. Wildflowers were frozen in ice as a “bucket” to house champagne, blue glassware topped the reception tables and the groom donned a bright orange tie. Guests dined on local beef, explored the property with the help of an illustrated map and even made their own headpieces at a flower crown bar. —Stephanie Cain

ATTIRE Alex rocked his suit with cowboy boots—and so did his groomsmen. Sari paired a cathedral-length veil with her cap-sleeve crepe gown. Even the pair’s pup, Elton, dressed up with an orange floral collar to match the groom. CEREMONY “I first wanted a pampas grass circle, but we were inspired to make it standing,” Sari says of the altar. The pampas grass felt authentic to the venue with the mountains in the backdrop. TENT Lounge furniture and hanging florals created a cozy, romantic ambience for the reception space.

O Plan ample travel time. Reserve a full day for travel, and be sure to tell guests that too. The closest airport—Calgary—is over an hour away.

For a (literally) fresh spin on guest entertainment, Dora Manuel, Sari’s planner and owner of Viva Bella Events, set up a make-your-own flower crown bar during cocktail hour. “It was the bride’s idea—she loves party favors,” Manuel says. “It was a huge hit.” Guests could design a headpiece out of jewel-toned blooms that matched those at the reception. Sari even wore one during the first dance.

We worked with the chef to create a custom menu featuring local, organic ingredients.

ith her family hailing from New Orleans, Ann-Marie MacFarlane (30 and a senior manager) and Yves Lawson (33 and a chief of staff) left their home in New York to host a classic NOLA affair complete with beignets and café au lait. “I wanted our wedding to feel like its own space and time,” Ann-Marie says. Dozens of candles lined the aisle of the chapel in the French Quarter where the pair said “I do,” while a ceiling of flowers created a magical atmosphere for the reception. The couple served rum punch in honor of Yves’s Jamaican heritage, included Voodoo chips in the welcome bag, entertained with a hiphop violinist and treated everyone to a funfilled second line. —SC

ATTIRE Wes’s groomsmen each wore a traditional Filipino barong (embroidered white shirt) for the wedding. Czarina added an overlay in the Filipiniana style during the church ceremony, and wore pink heels for a pop of color. BEACH Black chiavari chairs juxtaposed the white altar, which was draped with fabric and covered in Fuji mums and dendrobium orchids. Lanterns flanked the arch and framed the couple as they exchanged vows. AMENITIES Guests picked up floral-print parasols and wood fans to keep cool in the humidity, plus flip-flips for comfort.

hoosing a destination wedding in the Philippines came naturally to travel-loving pair Czarina Adan (28 and a franchise owner) and Kristofer (Wes) Puno (33 and a manager). Plus, the two wanted to make it easy on their grandparents, who all live in Manila, the nation’s capital. “Our guests saw it as an opportunity for a vacation, and our families saw it as a huge reunion,” Czarina says of opting for the island of Boracay. The couple planned two ceremonies—one full of Filipino traditions in a Catholic church and the other on the beach officiated by a friend— and requested that guests wear white to show unity. “We wanted everyone to feel like a part of the wedding,” she says. “It was one long, extended family vacation.” —SC

CHURCH “We didn’t want to take away from the beautiful architecture of the old Spanish-style church,” Czarina says of the minimal décor. The focus remained on the couple and their Filipino traditions. Wes presented Czarina with 13 gold New York City subway tokens her mom had from when she lived there. “She gave them to us to pass along to our children,” he says. MUSIC A Disney fan, Czarina processed in to “I See The Light” from Tangled, and songs from other films played at the reception. MENU “Food is a huge part of our culture,” Wes says of the buffet of Filipino dishes, including pork belly with barbecue sauce, dory fish, tinapa dip and shrimp with quail eggs.

For WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne and Amanda Clifton, their November nuptials went well beyond love and basketball.

TKM18SPR_RW_CelebWedding.L [P].indd 213

As soon as they were announced as the 2017 Dream Wedding couple, the philanthropic pair got to work weaving their commitment to charity and family into their celebration. They created a registry on TheKnot.com where family, friends and fans could donate to the Elena Delle Donne Foundation to benefit two causes significant to the couple: the special needs community and those suffering from Lyme disease. Elena’s sister Lizzie was born deaf and blind, and Elena was diagnosed with Lyme disease nearly a decade ago. With the help of dozens of local industry pros, including New York–based wedding planner and event designer Jove Meyer,

Elena and Amanda made it official on Friday, November 3, on the sprawling lawn of Hempstead House in Sands Point, New York. A romantic palette of white, green and gold played up the estate’s existing ornate moldings and oversize mantels, but it was the incorporation of jaw-dropping floral installations that made for an unforgettable fete. “From the initial walk-through, I imagined wild vines growing all throughout Hempstead House,” says florist Lilli Wright of Mimosa Floral Design in Brooklyn, New York. “At some point, we started comparing the idea to Sleeping Beauty’s castle to help explain our vision.” Verdant clusters of Southern

smilax, along with arrangements of hydrangeas, delphinium and over 7,000 white roses (all of which were donated to a local nursing and rehabilitation center post-party through Repeat Roses) transformed the space. The brides wore white—Elena rocked a sleeved Ersa Atelier gown while Amanda donned Pronovias—for their walk down a floral-lined aisle before tying the knot with a handfasting ceremony overlooking Hempstead Bay. “Watching Amanda walk down the aisle was, without a doubt, the most exciting moment of the day for me,” Elena says. Postceremony, the newlyweds changed into BHLDN dresses before settling in at communal dining tables decorated with gilded chargers, tapered candles and

acrylic place cards etched in gold script. Dessert was a massive, six-foot masterpiece by Nine Cakes with 11 alternating tiers of confetti and lemon cake. Partygoers also noshed on bone-in rib eye and freshly baked doughnuts when they weren’t busy celebrating on the monogrammed dance floor. “It was perfect,” Elena says of the day’s modern yet organic design. “When we first saw the room, a huge smile came across my face. It was everything we could’ve ever wanted.”

JOVE’S DREAM WEDDING DISH On designing The Knot Dream Wedding: “For me, this wedding meant shining a spotlight on marriage for all couples. I was honored to work alongside Elena and Amanda to create their dream wedding while showing the world that love is love.”

“The plan was to make it feel like a lush, organic garden had been growing inside the property for a while.”

On breaking tradition: “Both brides put a fun twist on the ceremony processional—they walked down the aisle with their fathers before meeting halfway and walking the rest of the way to the altar together.”

On the towering dessert: “Elena is six-foot-five, so Betsy from Nine Cakes designed a cake the couple could cut into at the same time, without anyone needing to hunch over or use a step stool.”

WORK OF ART OPPOSITE PAGE The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis acted as an original venue—and source of inspiration—for event designer Gretchen Culver, who pulled from the surrounding artwork and architecture to inspire the fete. “I envisioned a young, hip couple who aren’t afraid of expressing themselves through thought-provoking design. They have colorful, interesting lives and I wanted their wedding to follow suit,” she says. GRAPHIC GREETING Paper escort cards in punchy red and blue are a visual “wow” when hung in a diagonal color split. Flanking blooms of red roses, fiery calla lilies and smoke bush pair with blue delphinium and hydrangeas to lend a wedding vibe and reinforce the palette.

STYLE INSPIRATION Robert Motherwell’s “Paris Suite” series (above) at the Walker Art Center served as a source of inspiration for Culver. “I was drawn to his use of color in a way that felt fresh and alive,” she says. “I wanted to use it as a jumping-off point for this style, but it’s important not to go too literal when translating inspiration. Embrace one or two elements that speak to you and build upon them in a way that's uniquely yours.”

gown silhouette styles trumpet gown

mermaid gown

The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.

The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

a-line gown

ball gown

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

This slim, form-fitting silhouette hugs the body from head-to-toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

wedding party 101 The least you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.

bridesmaids • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the bridesmaid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the bridesmaid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your bridesmaids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the bridesmaids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your girls. Email works great for this.

sweetheart neckline

scoop neckline

one-shoulder neckline

groom & groomsmen • Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar.

292

• The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel

notched lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. peaked lapel

flower girls & ring bearers • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

TKM18SPR LOOKBOOK 02 (274-305).indd 292

• Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, the suit will pay for itself.

The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 3

4 Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse dutyfree bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. 2 The water is so clear in the Bahamas that divers experience visibility of up to 200 feet.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6

BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers. 3

First made 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors. 4

Bajans (as Barbados residents are called) are crazy about cricket and golf.

2 Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds.

Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

6 To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay. 8 While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.

Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves your man’s never seen before! 10

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago. 2 Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your groom loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

IF YOU'RE ANIMAL LOVERS Zimbabwe has long been considered the go-to for a safari in Southern Africa, and after a few decades of political unrest, the country is making a comeback— largely on the heels of conservation efforts. Wildlife is thriving and parks like Hwange are teeming with elephants. Deeper Africa can arrange safaris that combine wildlife and cultural experiences and provide a glimpse of how tourism benefits both nature and the local communities. (DeeperAfrica.com) WHEN TO GO Dry season, between June and October, offers especially great weather for game viewing.

WHERE TO STAY At Somalisa Camp’s location on the banks of a watering hole in Hwange National Park, you can view elephants from one of its seven tents as you take a relaxing soak in a copper bathtub. Run by conservation pioneer African Bush Camps, Somalisa can arrange village visits as well as couples activities, such as a romantic bush dinner for two under the stars. (From $990, all-inclusive; AfricanBushCamps.com) WHAT TO DO Go on a game drive and stop at one of the watering holes for a G&T at sundown, then scan the bush for nocturnal critters on a night drive back to camp. The country’s historical landmarks tell the story of centuriesold civilizations. Outfitter Experience Jordan offers excursions ranging from a day trip to visit the narrow gorges of Wadi Rum to a seven-day hike from Dana Biosphere Reserve to the ancient city of Petra. (ExperienceJordan.com) WHEN TO GO Spring and fall—avoid the scorching heat of summer. WHERE TO STAY Set along the Dana to Petra trail, Feynan Ecolodge runs off solar power and is staffed by local Bedouins, who invite guests into their community for coffee and bread-baking demonstrations. The hotel is alcohol free and vegetarian, but serves the best falafel in all of Jordan. (From $225, all-inclusive; EcoHotels.me) WHAT TO DO From Feynan Ecolodge, you can explore well-preserved Roman ruins, remnants of an early Byzantine monastery and the remains of a Neolithic settlement on a four-hour guided Archeological Treasures hike. SITES TO SNAP The Treasury is one of the most elaborate temples in the area and Petra’s most photographed edifice. WHEN TO GO March to May and October to November have fewer crowds. WHERE TO STAY Ellerman House, a hotel in the seaside Bantry Bay neighborhood, offers breathtaking ocean views and an extensive South African art collection with works from talents such as John Meyer, Deborah Bell and William Kentridge. India’s cultural heart is impossibly romantic. The northwestern state unfolds itself like an ancient tapestry of forts, havelis (mansions) and opulent palaces. To truly travel back to the time of the Raj, spend a few days relaxing in the rural heartlands, where life feels like it hasn’t changed in centuries. WHEN TO GO July to September is monsoon season—but it also brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Winter, October to March, boasts colorful festivals. Try to avoid the summer heat of April through June. WHERE TO STAY Escape the city and spend a few nights living like a maharaja at Shahpura Bagh, a rural estate set on 45 acres of gardens midway between Jaipur and Udaipur. The former summer residence of the ruling dynasty is still family owned. Bird-watch from the property, take an excursion to the nearby orchard farm or lounge like true royalty beside one of the largest temperaturecontrolled pools in Rajasthan. Hike the Grand Canyon, climb a via ferrata (a route of ladder rungs and fixed cable), explore slot canyons and dig for fossils around Grand StaircaseEscalante. Have your camera at the ready, as Instagram-worthy photo ops of hoodoos (tall spires of rock) and red-rock arches are around every corner. WHEN TO GO May through September, but remember, summer months can be hot and temps vary based on elevation.

WHERE TO STAY If camping and cabins aren’t your thing, Amangiri is well worth the hefty price tag. Set on 600 acres, the luxe lodge is at the heart of the Grand Circle, making it the ideal stay to explore Utah’s riches. Each of the 34 suites has a private terrace with mesa or dune views. After a day outdoors revive sore muscles with a spa treatment inspired by Navajo traditions. (From $850; NayaraSprings.com) WHAT TO DO Accompany Juan Pablo, the resident wildlife expert, on a night forest walk in search of nocturnal critters such as bats, neon-colored frogs and wildcats. ANIMAL ENCOUNTER If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a sloth in the wild. If the slowmoving mammal eludes you, you're sure to see one at Nayara’s new sloth sanctuary shelter, home to more than 15 sloths. Take a complimentary walking tour and spot other wildlife too—the area has the highest number of bird species in Costa Rica.

My grandmother requested a photo holding my train, and I was more than happy to oblige.
