EDITOR’S LET TER

30

In case you haven’t experienced it yet, let me be the first to tell you that people love to offer unsolicited advice to those planning a wedding. (I imagine you’re all nodding.) While some you’ll gladly accept and value, the rest, well, let’s just say they mean well. But here’s something to consider: If the well-intended advice includes words like “rules” or “traditionally,” or a series of “dos and don’ts,” proceed with caution. Because at The Knot, we believe a wedding should be reflective of two people and their love, not a rule book. Which is why we’re dedicating this issue to the idea of twisting traditions and making your day truly feel like

WE BELIEVE A WEDDING SHOULD BE REFLECTIVE OF TWO PEOPLE AND THEIR LOVE, NOT A RULE BOOK.”

you. We’ve packed it with things like new spins on the unity candle ceremony, tips for including two different cultures into one celebration and even 20 completely new ideas you can add to your wedding. Besides finding lots of inspiration in our pages, my biggest hope is you take away a sense of empowerment to do what feels right for you as a couple, whether it’s incorporating wellestablished traditions or making your own (or a little bit of both). And don’t forget to keep us in the loop! Tell us how you two are personalizing your day by sharing a photo on Instagram and tagging #maketradition and @theknot for a chance to have your story featured.

VOW TO END CHILD MARRIAGE

TWISTS ON TRADITIONS This is one of the coolest “something blues” I’ve ever seen. Plus, it can be worn again after the wedding. p. 132

in October, $1 was donated for every ring finger post on IG with #VowForGirls From left: Suzy Cirulis, Sarah Bratholt and Selma Koita of Crate & Barrel (a VOW partner) with Girls Not Brides chair Mabel van Oranje

Here’s a staggering fact: Every year, 12 million girls under the age of 18 are married—most against their will. Simply put, this has to change. So The Knot has partnered with VOW, a movement dedicated to creating a world without child marriage, to bring awareness and encourage action. How can you help? Attach VOW to your retail registry through The Knot Gifts Back (TheKnot .com/registry/charity) and a portion of gifts will go to supporting girls at risk.

What beauty advice would you give to a bride rocking a statement outfit on her wedding day?

ANITA DONGRE FASHION DESIGNER & FOUNDER OF HOUSE OF ANITA DONGRE “New & Now” (p. 93)

How are modern Indian to-be-weds making traditional wedding attire their own?

Choose a look that will enhance your natural beauty without competing with your outfit. Keep it simple as a refreshing contrast to busy attire, or go more bold by picking one feature to accentuate, like your lips or eyes. I always love to play up eyes with curled lashes (it’s the best way to make your eyes appear more open) and liner, then pair them with a natural lip. @brianduprey

Today’s couples embrace all cultures. The blouse and dupatta are elements women can play with, while men can experiment with their jacket length or prints. I see couples choose both traditional and modern attire for their celebrations. Ultimately, you should be happy in what you wear. @anitadongre

I think tradition is beautiful, but don’t feel like you have to fit in a box. Use customs you’re familiar with as a jumping-off point to create something that feels authentic to your story. Queer couples tend to lean in to traditions we’ve seen, but there’s no reason you have to walk down the aisle like a straight couple. Get creative, and take time to think about the moments that matter. When making your choices, ignore others and do what makes you and your partner comfortable. It’s your wedding. @jovemeyer

1 SMOKE BOMB EXITS Sparklers, make way. The new wedding send-off is a riot of color: smoke bombs. These fun props create a cloud of dreamy pigment, eliciting otherworldly photos and “oohs” and “ahhs” from your guests. Match the smoke color to your wedding hues or opt for a standout rainbow backdrop. The only caveat— this farewell is best captured during daylight hours.

I’m super into the no-makeup makeup look trending in bridal beauty right now. We’re seeing a shift from the pressure to load on heavy wedding day makeup to prioritizing good skin care, considering natural enhancements (like microblading or teeth whitening) and valuing overall wellness. “Flight attendants” gave partygoers passports and sent them off on a trip around the world, starting with a 10-foot floral globe on the steps of the iconic New York Public Library in New York City.

VIBES Attendees were invited to explore the worlds set up in various areas of the library while enjoying signature drinks. The band packed the dance floor with Indian, Latin and African tunes and guests visited the photo booth to take the “best passport photo” ever.

FR ANCO-MANIA Lavender, cypress trees and florals transported guests to the fields of Provence. Decadent dishes, like a tomato and goat cheese confit and cream-filled brioche, made this très chic garden space a must visit. MARR AKESH MARKETS Moroccan spices and boldly colored linens set the stage for Middle Eastern flavors like lamb skewers and mini meat pies. A hot tea infusion bar paired clove chai with festive cotton candy.

ZEN DEN Towering bamboo trees lined the hall and led guests to a bao bun bar with crunchy shrimp and spiced smoked tofu offerings. Vibrant red fabric with gilded accents played to the Japanese influence.

POLAR PAVILION Guests enjoyed East and West Coast oysters served by attendants dressed in alpine attire, or helped themselves at the 10-foot bar made entirely of ice. Acrylic furniture and silvery linens finished off the cool look.

Organizing all those details and to-dos? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

42

PHOTOGRAPHY BY YUNHEE KIM

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). KEEP ORGANIZED Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. COMPILE YOUR TEAM After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with personalized recs. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros, plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for cash to put toward things like your honeymoon or a home down payment, start a registry on The Knot Newlywed Fund. THINK OF YOUR GUESTS Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time).

Plan Your Wedding on Your Phone

GET YOUR DAY-OF TIMELINE As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed day-of timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and VIPs. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some champagne and having a blast with your people. >>

I’ll be flying with my wedding dress— what are some good travel tips? Harmony Walton: Always carry it on. And add a few layers of protection, like tissue, between your gown and the garment bag. Before you board, check airline sites for your options. Some have closets where you can hang it, but you may need to lay it in the overhead. Don’t stress—simply steam it once you arrive. As a rule, never check anything you can’t live without on your wedding day.

What are some fresh color palettes for Indian weddings? Shawna Gohel: This depends on your aesthetic, but I love a look that leans toward saturated glamour. Since Indian weddings are bright, energetic celebrations, vibrant palettes tend to work best. Some of my favorite hues for weddings include jewel-toned combinations such as saffron and plum, peacock blue and silver, or crimson and gold.

PLANNING

How can I tell if prospective vendors are LGBTQ+ friendly? Brittny Drye: No one wants to have that conversation of, “By the way, I’m a woman marrying a woman— are you cool with that?” It’s super uncomfortable to feel like you have to “out” yourself every time you talk to a vendor. To avoid the awkward (and possibly heartbreaking) convo, there are ways to determine if a pro is equality minded before even sending an email. While some sites clearly state their delight in working with everyone, others may not be as clear. This is where you’ll need to do a deep dive into their online presence: Does their website have images of LGBTQ+ couples? Do they use gender-neutral language? Do their social accounts celebrate LGBTQ+ marriage? (Pro tip: Go back to June 2015 to see if they posted about the marriage equality win.) You can also see if they’re a preferred vendor or have had work featured on equality-minded sites like Love Inc., or if they include badges like the one from The Knot.

TR ADITIONS

The Couple Surgery residents Ida Lim and Andrew Adler met in California and live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Details Ida and Andrew made it official on June 2, 2018, at MyMoon, a Spanish restaurant in Brooklyn, New York.

ONE WEDDING

Two Cultures

HOW A MODERN PAIR PERSONALIZED THEIR CELEBRATION WHILE HONORING THEIR JEWISH AND CHINESE HERITAGES. BY BECKY MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEV KUPERMAN

48

Customary Accessories “We wanted everyone to wear yarmulkes for the ceremony,” Andrew says. “I also brought my talis from my bar mitzvah, which is what’s wrapped around my and Ida’s shoulders. It’s common to wear it to services, so I decided to bring mine to our wedding.”

HIS

HERS

Jewish Service A rabbi from Israel married the pair under a chuppah, and during the proceedings Andrew broke glass. “I didn’t want the ceremony to be overly religious because I wanted to be true to who I am, but it was important for my grandpa, who’s very traditional,” Andrew says.

Chinese Tea Ceremony The pair served tea to Ida’s family in Malaysia about two months ahead of their wedding to respect her mom’s wishes. In Brooklyn, they dished it out preceremony for their elders and siblings, though they reserved the usual cheongsam attire for cocktail hour. Gift Exchange The two received red envelopes filled with gold and money after honoring their family with tea. “My jewelry cuffs were imprinted with dragons and phoenix,” Ida says. The animals are symbolic of man and wife, or yin and yang, according to feng shui.

THEIRS

Unity Ceremony “We wanted to involve our parents somehow,” Andrew says. After both sets poured orange sand into a glass vase, Ida and Andrew followed with gold—the shades are considered lucky in Chinese culture.

TKM19SPR_FOB_Essay.L [P].indd 48

Blended Ketubah “We edited the Hebrew marriage license to read like a spiritual agreement,” Andrew says. “We then encircled it with Chinese designs and a dragon and phoenix,” Ida adds. “The color red is favorable in my culture.”

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

INDIANWESTERN FUSION As one of the hottest bridal couture designers in India, Anita Dongre has dressed everyone, including royalty and Bollywood celebs. Now, Dongre is debuting her first-ever collection of Western bridal gowns called One World. Here, she gives us the scoop on her new line. What are some Indian bridal trends? Traditionally, Indian brides wore red, but the modern bride is changing the rules. She’s wearing any color that suits her. It could be hot pink, soft blush or emerald green. Typically, white was never worn at an Indian wedding, but I’ve met a lot of young Indian brides who actually did wear white dresses. How has Indian bridal design changed over time? In the last few years I’ve realized the Indian bride wants to be comfortable. When I designed my collection, I made comfort my number one priority. For example, one of my clients loved that I made her dress with big pockets. What do you take into consideration when designing a custom dress? Wearability is key. In the past, Indian brides were demure and didn’t dance. Today, they’re dancing more than anyone. I use a fabric from Rajasthan, India, that makes the lehenga lightweight. I want my bride to feel comfortable while still looking like a princess.

PLAY WITH DIFFERENT TEXTURES When working with a pale palette, texture is important. Incorporate elements in terra-cotta, sandstone and canvas for a current feel.

SAGE Cool green balances other warm hues.

LIVE ACCENTS Work a few of these unexpected plants into your wedding scene.

FAKE THE PERFECT LOCALE Channel dusty vibes for your day no matter where you live by seeking out a botanical garden that has a dedicated wing of arid plants like succulents, cacti and more. Trust us—it’s just like the real thing. THINK BEYOND FLOWERS For a fresh cake topper, swap buds for a cluster of cacti and thistle. A coral drip topping completes the unique look.

KING PROTEA This standout stem comes in white too.

XEROGRAPHICA An air plant adds playful dimension.

FUNK UP YOUR FASHION Opt for boho-friendly attire, like a lightweight linen suit, lace dress or wide-brimmed hat. Encourage your crew to get in on the fun with a “desert-chic” dress code (just have some more deets on your website). TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUESTS Actually hosting in the sun and sand? Give extra attention to friends and family as they brave the hot temps with infused water, umbrellas and sunscreen.

a fresh take on the shade Originally thought to deflect the Evil Eye and represent purity and fidelity, the “something blue” superstition of years past is meant to help couples get luck on their side ahead of “I do”—whether they want to prevent a rainy ceremony, drunken groomsman or legit marriage doom (not that you should be worried about that last one). Nowadays though, the pretty hue is showing up in much more playful ways than before, with modern pairs working blue into everything from getaway cars and painted leather jackets to frosty signature cocktails and even their wedding day hairstyle (how cool is that?). >>

personality-packed outfits Historically, matching bridesmaid dresses stemmed less from wanting a colorcoordinated girl squad and more from, you know, distracting vengeful attackers looking to kidnap a bride because of her dowry. Thankfully, we live in 2019, and you can marry whomever you want with whomever you want by your side. And if you don’t envision your crew rocking the same floor-length gown, encourage them to choose their own unique looks that match their personalities. Unifying the vibe through a color palette or pattern helps it feel cool but cohesive.

Wedding confections may have been a mainstay since, oh, ancient Rome—but that doesn’t mean one has to appear at your bash. If you’re a pair that prefers savory to sweet or Swiss cheese to Swiss buttercream, then you do you. Cut into a stack of cheese wheels or feed each other from a tower of whippedcream covered waffles. As long as there are a few sweet moments to end the night (guests love a sugar rush), no one will miss the cake—promise.

special moments for two At its core, marriage is two lives becoming one (awww), so it’s no surprise that customs meant to reinforce unity are at the center of many religious and spiritual ceremonies. Tried-and-true acts like lighting a candle or tying your hands together (known as handfasting) are still wildly popular with couples, but more duos are choosing to cement their bond with a unity moment that’s more reflective of their love story. Was your first date at a Mexican taco joint? Mix up the perfect batch of guac (cilantro or no cilantro, we’ll let you decide) or swig tequlia shots as your first act as a married pair. Or get your blood pumping by tag-team sawing a log to then display in your home. Whatever you come up with, give the act a shout-out in your ceremony program to let guests in on the unique meaning behind it. (Hey, you could even invite them to take those tequila shots with you.)

44% OF COUPLES HAVE THEIR PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURE A “FIRST LOOK” AHEAD OF THEIR CEREMONY

Whether out of superstition or religious reasons, many couples forgo seeing each other before hitting the aisle. And while that’s totes a personal choice, it doesn’t mean you can’t score those cute “first look” photos you see all over Insta. If you don’t want to have a face-to-face with your love before the ceremony, why not try a secluded hand hold meets pep talk, in which you touch— but not see—your partner? Or get wow-worthy reactions from your crew by revealing your wedding day look to your parents, friends or siblings. >>

fun with your florals Believe it or not, flowers at a wedding have less than romantic beginnings. They were initially incorporated to ward off evil and mask odor. (Yep, sorry.) But since then, pretty stems have become a main style point for many to-be-weds looking to decorate their day. For a fresh twist, take inspiration from Victorian-era couples and ask your florist to use buds with special meanings (like gardenias for joy or hydrangeas for gratitude) or focus on drama with oversize bouquets and hanging installations. Non-flower “flowers” are big now too, so feel free to trade petals for plants, greenery and even tropical leaves painted in pastels.

incorporating whomever you want There’s no denying it—kids are cute. And if you have a few little ones you want to involve in your walk down the aisle, we say go for it. But just because you’re sans a niece or nephew doesn’t mean you have to go without that coveted “aw” moment at the ceremony. Couples are now having anyone and everyone precede them down the aisle, whether it’s a beloved dog ring bearer or flower grannies (we die). The Science of Meditation

Wedding planning stressing you out? App Headspace can help you keep calm and plan on. BY IVY JACOBSON

QUALITY SLEEP It’s one thing to get enough sleep—but do you wake up actually feeling rested? In stressful times, even if you hit the sheets for eight hours, the mind can stay active, so you could still wake up tired. With meditation, it’s easier to fall asleep, get quality zzz’s and feel totally refreshed. LESS STRESS Of course your second cousin RSVP’d with a plus-one. Meditation will help you keep perspective and be less reactive. Studies show using Headspace can

BETTER PRODUCTIVITY You’re wedding planning, aka doing all the things. If you can train your mind to be less distracted and more present, you can focus on one task at a time and do it better and efficiently—win-win.

HEALTHIER CHOICES The busier our minds are, the more stressed we are, and the less we prioritize our physical health. If you practice meditation, you’ll have more clarity,

BEGIN SLOWLY Like training for a marathon, start with an easy run. Don’t go into meditation with too many expectations— there’s a reason it’s called a “practice.”

FIND TIME Carve out 5 to 10 minutes (put it in your calendar if need be). View it as a break or treat—this is the only time in your day when you can focus on you.

allowing you to step away from old patterns and pick healthier options. Meditation also helps with heart health and decreasing blood pressure.

IMPROVED MOOD Our moods change daily. We can let ourselves get really dialed in to the highs and lows, or instead, create space for them to come and go, knowing they’ll pass. Having that perspective will give you freedom and a sense of contentment with how the mind is now—even when the wrong colored linens arrive.

PICK A PLACE Scope out a spot where you won’t be interrupted. You can even meditate in your car before work, or during your commute on a train or bus.

FOCUS ON BREATH When you get distracted (which will definitely happen and is completely normal) bring your attention back to your breathing and zero in on that.

In a busy world where everyone wants to see effective and immediate results on everything they invest time in, you may be iffy on trying meditation to improve your state of mind. But Headspace, a guided meditation app, offers clinically validated research and studies on the mindfulness meditation field. “If you meditate, things will still go wrong in life. But would you rather respond in a place of calm or with a quick, angry reaction?” says cofounder Andy Puddicombe. Here, he shares five science-backed benefits.

TRAVEL THE NEW WAYS TO TRENDY NEWCOMER

VIRGIN VOYAGES

These aren’t your grandparents’ cruise lines. BY MARIA BOUSELLI

We know—the words “cruise ship” probably conjure up images of endless buffets, crowded pools and nightly bingo. But these lines are revolutionizing the way you set sail with boutique-hotel-like accommodations, adultsonly itineraries, guided tours at amazing ports along the way and more. If you’re looking to honeymoon on the water, these picks won’t disappoint.

Yes, Virgin—as in Richard Branson. You can expect his well-known luxe style to be all over the Scarlet Lady (its first ship in the fleet), with some of the most well-known design groups throughout the world coming together to outfit the yacht-like vessel. Get ready to catch some rays— 93 percent of the rooms boast an ocean view, and 86 percent have their own balcony. Want access to the super-exclusive Richard’s Rooftop? Book one of its plush suites. Oh, and did we mention the cruise is adults only? INCLUDE A REGIONAL TRADITION Lean in to the culture of your destination. In Germany, breaking porcelain equals good luck. And in Wales, the bridal bouquet is traditionally made with myrtle, symbolizing love, and is shared with the entire wedding party. Indian weddings often involve the bride’s family trying to steal the groom’s shoes. Find a tradition that speaks to you, and then put your own twist on it.

GIVE BACK TO THE AREA Encourage guests to participate in doing good by donating their time (perhaps a pre-organized service opportunity) or money in lieu of wedding gifts to a local organization in the community where you’re saying “I do.” Or coordinate with the wedding venue and donate extra wedding items, like décor or leftover favors, after the celebration.

BLOOMS “The most amazing part is how natural all the flowers looked,” Simone says of the unexpected groupings of spray-painted florals, wood-cut leaves and iridescent Mylar accents. BOUTONNIERE Charlie’s exotic accessory was an allium bullet. FAMILY Both the bride and the groom were escorted down the aisle by their parents. FASHION Carol Hannah designed Simone’s custom gown. “She helped me realize the ‘modern woodland nymph’ vision of my dreams,” Simone says. WELCOME BAGS Bright Baggu totes filled with all the essentials, plus a custom map and enamel pins with the couple’s wedding hashtag, readied travelers for the festivities. RECREATION “It makes me really happy to have shared the experience with the people closest to us,” Charlie says of the packed weekend, which included pool time and games on the lake.

S

imone Hill (28 and an MBA candidate) wears and decorates with shades that span the rainbow. So when she and Charlie Brosens (30 and works in real estate) started planning their celebration at Cedar Lakes Estate in rural Hudson Valley, New York, they knew a simple, rustic design wasn’t going to cut it. “We wanted to create a New York City loft wedding but in a barn,” Simone says. Though the design was a departure from the setting, the location was essential for all the outdoor entertainment the couple planned for their guests. “I’ve always loved summer camp,” Simone says. “I wanted the vibe to feel like a mini vacation away with tons of activities to bring everyone together.” —Becky Murray

SEAT ASSIGNMENTS Simone and Charlie wanted to wow the crowd as much as possible. Case in point: Guests found their tables with the help of a multicolor acrylic escort display covered with more than 10 kinds of plants. CEILING INSTALLATION A “cloud” of spray-painted baby’s breath, Mylar and fringe brightened up the barn. CAKE A luminous topper added sparkle to the naked confetti cake coated in pink frosting. SIGNATURE DRINKS Two sips livened up cocktail hour: One similar to the Purple Drank the pair loves at Sweet Chick Restaurant in New York City, and a mango margarita dubbed Mango Matchmaker, named after their friend who set them up at Princeton. ENTERTAINMENT A brass band the pair first heard at a bar in Manhattan’s Chinatown played during hors d’oeuvres.

BRIDESMAIDS Half of Janie’s wedding party wore tulle, and the other half wore embroidered lace dresses. JEWELRY Though Armando proposed with an aquamarine engagement ring, the pair designed a second, snowflake-inspired one together. ENTERTAINMENT For a “hint of fiesta” and a good photo op, Janie and Armando surprised guests with a flower-bearing burro. FASHION Janie fell in love with her dress in part because of the “different and unique” Spanish vibe of the neckline. WELCOME BAGS The couple stuffed tote bags with local favorites, including Melipona honey. ESCORT CARDS Janie and her sister, the maid of honor, created the seat assignments with dried flowers and brass frames. PROGRAMS The pair printed a pen-and-ink sketch of the beachfront resort on their ceremony booklets.

F

or Janie Lucia Jung (27 and an event planner) and Armando Villarreal (37 and an engineering director) love is found in the details—and those who help you pull them together. The pair always puts an emphasis on the little things, like Armando waiting for the sun to set to propose while in Italy, or the two working together on researching weather patterns for their beach vows. This attention to detail shined in every aspect of their décor, which fused the Caribbean Sea of Armando’s childhood in Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea of their Italian engagement. “We included a lot of details and they didn’t go unnoticed,” Janie says, including the table runner, which Armando dyed dusty blue. —Louis Baragona

DESSERTS The wedding cake was a stack of lemon, vanilla and coffee layers, while the accompanying groom’s cake was a guava cheesecake with banana cream. RECEPTION “We didn’t want to cover up the space with a tent,” Janie says. Instead, they added firefly-like glass bubble lights to the open-air “secret garden.” SWEETHEART CHAIRS The newlyweds marked their seats with sword fern and mocha lisianthus. DÉCOR To greet guests as they arrived at the beach ceremony, Janie and Armando stocked weathered vintage tables with raffia hand fans, white parasols and petal toss bags, which Janie and her sister individually hand-sealed using monogrammed wax. PLACE SETTINGS Janie crafted the linen reception menus after finding “the perfect dusty blue fabric” in Los Angeles.

CEREMONY Kevin and Zak said their vows in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s sculpture garden under custommade steel arches. “They added so much to the ceremony and truly looked like a museum sculpture,” Zak says. ATTIRE The pair told guests to think “art gallery chic” when choosing their ensembles. “We had people come in wild outfits,” Zak says. ENTERTAINMENT In addition to dancing and snapping pictures in a photo booth, guests posed for portraits by fashion illustrator Kristine Steiner to take home. STATIONERY A close friend designed bold typography-driven pieces in a minimal black-and-white color scheme. DESSERT A piece of art by Otobong Nkanga on display at the museum inspired the graphic cake. ARRANGEMENTS A mix of large monstera and palm leaves, ferns and other greenery topped tables.

K

evin King (28 and a physician) and Zak Dabbas (37 and a CEO) decided very early on in their wedding planning that traditions were made to be broken. “We flipped everything on its head and said we’re just going to do it our way,” Zak says. Kevin and Zak, a couple of self-proclaimed “design junkies,” looked to sleek, neutral colors and the venue’s artwork to make a striking statement. While putting together their modern ceremony, they emphasized equality. Even the officiants had a traditionbreaking surprise of their own. “At one point in the ceremony, they told us to face the crowd and asked the audience to state their love and support for our marriage—and they all did,” Zak says. —LB

RECEPTION “I did a sketch on a napkin on my way to the first planning meeting, and that ended up being the vision for the whole event,” Amelia says. Laser-cut wood pergolas draped with white chiffon, café lights and more than 300 brass lanterns from Morocco filled the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. FASHION For the after-party, Amelia made a top from extra material from her gown. SEATING CHART Brass trays hung from a wood accent wall, hand-calligraphed with guests’ table assignments. HEELS Amelia’s vintage Christian Louboutins in gold Indian brocade were “a lucky eBay find,” she says. BRIDESMAIDS Amelia designed the magenta, vermillion and saffron gowns, which she finished with hand-embroidered jasmine flowers. CAKE Gold-leaf sugar flowers topped the almond and chocolate confection. The pair served the cake along with traditional Indian sweets and baklavas.

A

melia Brown (27 and a fashion designer) and Jaser Faruq (28 and a financial analyst at Tesla Motors) met at Cornell University in a literature class centered on The Arabian Nights. Four years later, the pair threw a modern affair with all the mystique of the Middle East. “We wanted to evoke the rich patterns and textures of Arabian, Moroccan and Indian traditions, but also keep everything fresh and simple,” Amelia says. The multicultural celebration began with an Episcopalian ceremony at the iconic Washington National Cathedral complete with Coldplay’s “ ’Til Kingdom Come” and Sufi readings. “I was blown away when we read our vows,” Jaser says. “Everything got really quiet and just fell away.” —BM

ith an event name like The Garden District Get Down, attorneys Kaye Lynch-Sparks (31) and Jon Hodnette (32) set the stakes high for their Big Easy bash. “We wanted to embrace New Orleans and show guests the best it has to offer,” Kaye says. The pair—who fell for the town and each other while law students at local Loyola University—planned a weekend itinerary that spanned the city and culminated with a wedding at a 19th-century mansion. Fitting for a town that seems to breed spontaneity, Kaye even kissed Jon as soon as she got to the altar out of excitement. “We wanted the day to be true to us and our sense of humor,” Kaye says. “Our black tie wedding was both classy and rowdy.” —BM

REAL WEDDINGS

WEDDING DRESS Athens-based designer Celia Kritharioti created Maria’s hand-painted organza gown in 2017 ahead of her and Keven’s first wedding in New York. “I loved it, but it was too summery,” Maria says. “I decided then that when we had the wedding in the village, I would wear it.”

REAL WEDDINGS

Maria Menounos’s family and friends planned her wedding to Keven Undergaro in Akovos, Greece, in just 30 days. The result? A Grecian dream that looked centuries in the making.

ine months after their New Year’s Eve vows in Times Square, TV personality Maria Menounos and CEO Keven Undergaro took center stage in another place, Maria’s father’s hometown of Akovos, Greece, for a second wedding. “Marrying in Greece was always something I wanted to do,â€? Maria says. “Every time I went, I felt welcomed and loved like I’ve never felt anywhere else.â€? The two initially envisioned a low-key celebration, not a glamorous production. “I thought it was going to be so homegrown I’d be picking lemons,â€? Maria says. That plan changed when her friend Sotiris Kyranakos, also a koumbaro (groomsman), and dad and took on the planning—with just 10 phone calls and a few images exchanged with Maria. After a Greek Orthodox ceremony inside the church Maria’s dad helped raise money to build decades ago, guests walked to a former schoolyard to find an enchanting tent covered in string lights. Raki shots with olives got the party started, followed by a family-style meal that included moussaka with smoked eggplant, black lentil salad and skioufichta pasta with slow cooked leg of lamb. The Mediterranean-inspired dĂŠcor put lemons on display, creating a sunny, relaxed atmosphere. “I used to joke I wanted to throw a party where the whole country’s invited,â€? Maria says. “We did that on a small scale in our village.â€? Keven adds, “My favorite moment was seeing Maria in the horsedrawn carriage, arriving at the church in her dress, smiling, along with her mom, dad and the people of Greece who were equally proud.â€? >>

REAL WEDDINGS

ENTERTAINMENT Local performers surprised the newlyweds at the reception to dance the traditional kalamatianós. FLOWER GIRL Maria’s goddaughter Margo wore a hand-painted silk organza dress and a crown of yellow wildflowers.

GETTING READY Villagers gathered outside Maria’s uncle’s house while she got dressed upstairs with her cousins, and Keven stayed put on the first floor. She also made time to write her single friends’ names on her shoes—a Greek superstition. “Whatever name gets erased after dancing is the next one to marry,” Maria says.

PROCESSION It’s customary for local dancers in traditional clothes to follow the bride to the church, and Maria’s journey was no exception—though she did attract a crowd in a horse-drawn carriage.

CEREMONY The Greek Orthodox service included biblical readings and rituals like the “ceremonial walk,” in which the priest leads the couple in a circle around the holy table for their first steps as newlyweds.

12/12/18 2:55 PM

DESSERT Italian decorative tiles inspired the cake’s mosaic design and honored Keven’s Italian roots. Guests also sampled authentic Greek desserts, including loukoumades with honey and cinnamon, ice cream served in biscuit cones and seasonal fruits.

SECOND LOOK Maria’s mom suggested the bride wear yellow because growing up she would sing a Greek song loosely translated, “Maria with the yellow dress, who do you love the most?”

3 REGISTRY DNA It’s now not only cool to ask for cash (three cheers for The Knot Newlywed Fund!) but you can wish list virtually anything. If you know you’ll never use a KitchenAid mixer, skip it. Instead ask for the samurai sword lessons you’ve been eyeing for your Japan honeymoon. Planning to adopt a family mascot after “I do”? Set up a puppy fund. It’s all about you two and your life together.

SOUPED-UP INVITES

185

With stationery like boxed correspondence and even video messages from to-be-weds, invitations are setting the stage for an epic party. Typography is leading the charge as the chicest design detail, while custom illustrations of venues and beloved pets continue to be a mainstay.

With our Universal Registry tool, you can make wish lists at big retailers, add individual items from one-of-a-kind stores and ask for cash. Learn more at TheKnot.com/registry.

FLORAL JEWELS All hail the new flower crown—real blooming jewelry is all the rage. Think: gorgeous bib necklaces full of fresh buds, succulent cuffs and elegant orchid drop earrings. These living baubles make an exceptional style statement. >>

ROYAL Pageantry in fashion reigns. Tiaras and headbands are big, along with minimalist dresses à la The Duchess of Sussex’s second look. Regal capes and capelets, billowy sleeves and blinged-out stunners are also making their way down runways and aisles alike.

don’t forget to deck out your entourage

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BAND— AND THE DJ You used to have to pick a team: eight-piece brass band or hip DJ. But now you can have both. Tap a DJ to spin your favorite hits with the added benefit of a guitarist or sax. You get the best of both worlds— original artists plus highenergy accompaniment.

7

THEMES & VIBES

A favorite book or TV show can dictate the style of your wedding (Game of Thrones lovers rejoice), or a feeling could also be your source of inspo (high-energy dance party, anyone?). Colors are still part of the vision—they’re just playing more of a supporting role.

FRESH-FACE BEAUTY Natural beauty (aka no-makeup makeup) is always on trend. Look like the best version of yourself by indulging in one of these prewedding treatments.

HAUTE CAKES

EXPERIENTIAL FAVORS

Wedding cakes are here to stay, and sculptural is the name of the game. Bakers are opting for unexpected shapes and varying tier sizes—so much so it’s hard to tell they’re actual cakes. Many are finished with stunning designs rich in color and texture.

12

GIN DANDY Every year ushers in a new trending spirit—and in 2019 it’s all about the gin. This quintessential liquor is the perfect mixer for herbals and adaptogens (yes, you read that right), and it’s in classics like the French 75 and negroni. Cheers to that!

RESOLUTIONS 1.5 oz. O.R.E. 118 gin ½ oz. pomegranate juice ¼ oz. simple syrup ¾ oz. lemon juice kombucha

THE HE UN-VENUE VENUE Breweries have replaced wineries as the place to tie the knot. And while barns and lofts are still hot, distilleries, ranches and greenhouses are gaining in popularity too.

If you’re celebrating for one day only, invite a cigar roller or ice cream truck to post up at the reception.

OLFACTORY EXPERIENCE

The new way to brand your wedding can’t be seen—but it will be smelled. Custom blends are being crafted especially for the occasion, spritzed on invites, pumped through the venue and even gifted in candle form as a party favor. Smell is the sense most closely linked to memory, so your guests will remember #thebestdayever when they light the wick.

THE IT RENTAL:

LIGHTING From fine linens to lounge furniture, there are many ways to enhance a space with rentals. But this year is all about the lighting. Uplighting is being replaced with more bespoke options like basket lanterns, neon installations and subtle colored taper candles.

it’s like the first look, but next level

THE GLAM BAR This bar doesn’t serve cocktails—it’s the bathroom amenity basket with the volume turned way up. A hair and makeup pro posts up in the ladies room to add bobby pins to dancedout ’dos, or a fresh swipe of lipstick for a total face refresh that will keep your guests looking fab well into after-party hours.

PRIVATE RIVATE VOWS Shy couples, this one’s for you. Instead of sharing intimate promises with 150 of your nearest and dearest, exchange vows privately before the start of the ceremony and recite standard vows at the altar (to make things official). Another twist? Whispering your vows to your partner so only you two know what was said.

Wedding Gowns 101 We know your first priority—finding the (other) one: your dress.

GOWN SILHOUETTE STYLES

trumpet gown

mermaid gown

The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.

The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

a-line gown

ball gown

sheath

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

This slim, formfitting silhouette hugs the body from head to toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

Wedding Party 101 All you need to know to coordinate your wedding party's look.

BRIDESMAIDS • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the bridesmaid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the bridesmaid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your bridesmaids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the bridesmaids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your girls. Email works great for this.

GROOM & GROOMSMEN

242

• Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar. • The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel

notched lapel

peaked lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. • Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, it will pay for itself.

FLOWER GIRLS & RING BEARERS • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

4 Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse dutyfree bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands.

With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks.

2 Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your groom loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

BEST Organizing a honeymoon can sometimes feel just as stressful as planning your wedding. Take the logistics (transfers, reservations, activities) out of the equation by booking an all-inclusive stay. Unfairly associated with dated hotel rooms, tacky details and so-so food options, today’s all-inclusive resorts have been reimagined to deliver a sophisticated, hassle-free vacation. Star-chef restaurants and overwater bungalows are just a few fixtures at our favorite inclusive beach resorts. And while adventure lodges don’t use the word “all-inclusive,” their rates seem like a steal when you consider hikes, horseback riding, skiing, gourmet meals, wine pairings and more have been factored in. Here are 10 ideas for stress-free, everythingincluded honeymoon escapes. BY JEN MURPHY
