EDITOR’S LET TER

@dopymoo

You DoYou Welcome to our first ever personalization issue. When I got married, the idea of personalizing your day usually meant creative table names (mine were New York City neighborhoods) and monogrammed napkins (yep, I had those too). And that was only five years ago. Today, it’s a whole new world. We’ve seen a boxing gym transformed into a reception venue, a dark and light beer combined in lieu of a unity candle, wedding gowns in colors like pink, deep red and blue—and the list goes on. You’ll find that it’s these ideas, whether just a break from the “norm” or part of a cultural tradition, that my editors and I reference time and time again—and why we decided to dedicate an entire issue to them. They’re the ones that help weddings break from the mold and take on a meaning that’s truly authentic, genuine and personal. Not to mention, they make for the most Instagramable moments that will have your guests talking (in a good way) about your wedding for years to come. So turn the page and start getting inspired to just do you.

@tryshka A moderately productive Saturday wedding planning calls for an unrestrained siesta.

FELIX FISCHER

CELEBRITY HAIRSTYLIST “Cosmic Love” (p. 200)

How can a bride nail down her personalized beauty look ahead of her day? It’s so important to have a consultation with your stylist well before the wedding. I ask my brides how they want to feel and what they want their partner to see that day. We then find a style that will make them feel like the most beautiful version of themselves. Having this consultation sets a level of comfort and takes away so much stress. felixfischerhair

GREG BENSON

LEAD MIXOLOGIST AT THE JEFFREY IN NEW YORK CITY AND HOST OF PODCAST BAR NONE “New & Now” (p. 83)

Any tips for couples looking to create a signature cocktail? Don’t shy away from a flavor you like because it’s weird. Say you both love baby eggplant. You’ve bonded over it, you cook with it—it’s your thing. Find a mixologist to make you the best baby eggplant cocktail ever. Bartenders love a challenge; some of the best drinks I’ve ever made have come from the strangest requests. @gregandcircuses

BRIAN LEAHY

OWNER AND LEAD PHOTOGRAPHER AT BRIAN LEAHY PHOTOGRAPHY “Under the Sicilian Sun” (p. 194)

How should couples scout photo sites for a destination wedding if they can’t visit ahead of time? Research, research, research—and talk to your photographer. It’s amazing how much scouting you can do from home with today’s technology. And your photographer should be able to tell if a location will work. Keep in mind, not having every spot prearranged is half the fun. Some of my best shots weren’t planned, but created while exploring. @brianleahyphoto

KATIE KORTEBEIN

ASSISTANT EDITOR, RESEARCH

What are some of your favorite wedding trends? Couples are really getting creative now that ceremony locations are so varied. I’m loving all the unique altars, like greenery arches, tapestries from a favorite destination or even an open-air “church” structure. It’s awesome when couples truly incorporate their personalities into their celebration. Even the most out-there hobbies or interests can be turned into beautiful details. @katiekortebein

Sit down and talk about what you love, what brought you together and what you cherish about each other. Once you have a list, you can think about how you might incorporate one (or more) of those aspects into your day. And then make it fun. Invite family and friends over to help—a DIY project is a great way to get everyone involved. @liagriffith

TOOLS CONGRATULATIONS

You’re Engaged! Here are the big to-dos from “yes” to “I do.” Turn the page for more, including the tools you’ll need and how to get your personalized checklist.

1

NAIL DOWN THE BUDGET Envision your wedding and decide how much you want to spend (and who else will be contributing).

2 GATHER YOUR CREW Ask your besties to stand beside you at the altar and in the months leading up to your day.

3 HIRE YOUR TEAM Research and book pros—anyone you have to have should be locked in ASAP.

4

5 REGISTER & CREATE A WEBSITE Start a wish list and site on The Knot. Share the link so guests are in on all the details, like hotel room blocks.

6

52

K

7 PLAN THE CEREMONY Meet with your officiant to discuss the details and attend prewedding counseling if required.

8

9

COMPLETE YOUR TEAM Book any outstanding pros like hairstylists, makeup artists, day-of transportation or a photo booth for your reception.

BUY THE RINGS Shop for and purchase your wedding rings—don’t forget insurance (now it’s starting to feel really real, right?).

10

TKM18SUM_FOB_Checklist.L [P].indd 52

CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING PAPER Order invites, thank-yous and other stationery. If you place one order, you may snag a discount.

FINALIZE OTHER PARTY DETAILS Plan your rehearsal dinner, after-party and morning-after brunch.

GO FOR FITTINGS Have the final dress fitting and arrange for suit or tux rental pickup.

11

13

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task a friend or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

The Knot Wedding Planner app is the only app that pulls together your vision, pros and guests—and puts planning in the palm of your hand.

54

K

PHOTOGRAPHY BY YUNHEE KIM

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE The first thing you’ll do in our app is take an image-based style quiz to help zero in on your wedding vibe (more on that on the next page). Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision that you can easily share with family and local pros with one click—so everyone knows exactly what you mean when you say “romantic garden party.” KEEP ORGANIZED You’ll find all of your planning to-dos, and when to do them, in the app’s checklist. Best of all, it’s customizable to your celebration. If you’re not hiring an officiant because your uncle is doing the honors, that to-do disappears off your list. Worried about staying on budget? The app’s budgeting tool tells you how much to put toward individual tasks, and tracks overall spending. COMPILE YOUR DREAM TEAM We’ll take the info you share with the app and provide you with personalized vendor suggestions. You can also browse thousands of award-winning pros, including planners and photographers, through The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Keep an eye on your registries straight from the app. Your wedding day isn’t the only time you’ll receive gifts (there’s the engagement party and shower too), so make it easy on guests and keep your wish list full of options. And check out The Knot Newlywed Fund—you can ask for cash to put toward things like a down payment on a home. THINK OF YOUR GUESTS Give guests all the info they’ll need, like hotel details and registry links, in one pretty package with the app’s wedding website feature. We’ll guide you every step of the way while you design your site. You can also sync it with your phone contacts (to save time address hunting) and use it to stay on top of guests who haven’t RSVP’d.

PROP STYLING: JULIE FLYNN AT HALLEY RESOURCES

Plan Your Wedding on Your Phone

GET YOUR DAY-OF TIMELINE As you check off your to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed timeline behind the scenes to help ensure everything goes off without a hitch on your wedding day. Share the schedule of events, arrival and set-up times, and more with all of your vendors, your wedding party and parents. This way, everyone will be on the same page—and you can focus on your walk down the aisle and making it the best day ever. >>

DISCOVER YOUR ST YLE No couple is just one set style—instead you’ll get a series of words that describe your wedding vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALET TE Check out the colors that best match your wedding style. And the best part— you can always change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget— starting with your venue.

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus there’s room for personalized must-haves (think: late-night taco truck, dog-friendly ceremony space or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your besties and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help to convey your “romantic garden party” style and theme.

TIP LOOK FOR THIS ICON Throughout the issue we’ve included more ways the app can help you plan, like creating your wedding website and setting up the ultimate registry.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE As you check off your to-dos, we’ll create a personalized day-of timeline to help you pull off the best day ever.

PLANNING

What are some other terms we can use for our wedding party besides bridesmaid and groomsman? Brittny Drye: Gone are the days of ladies on one side of the aisle and guys on the other—today’s couples are having mixed genders on both sides on their wedding day. You shouldn’t feel limited by binary titles—instead, allow yourself to pick verbiage that best suits you and your loved ones. You can use more typical titles such as person of honor, bridesman, groomswoman and attendant. Or try giving your group a fun twist with broader labels, like ceremony squad, or “I do” crew. Having a themed wedding? Incorporate it into the wedding party title. For a travel-themed wedding, try adventure seekers, or for a camp celebration, go with counselors.

OF COUPLES HAVE A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL AT THEIR WEDDING

How do you keep your hairstyle intact at an outdoor summer wedding? Brittany Lo: For warmer temps, I tell brides to be realistic and choose a look that both complements their features and can withstand potentially hot and humid weather. For example, if your hair already doesn’t hold a curl well, ask your stylist if a half-up style may better defy the heat and humidity of the day. But if you’ve always dreamed of looking a certain way on your wedding day, there’s no need to completely stay away from that style. Your stylist has worked in plenty of conditions—they’ll be able to come up with a look that you’ll absolutely love and feel beautiful in from start to finish.

PLANNING

How do we choose the perfect signature cocktail for our reception? Mary Chatman: When picking a signature sip, you want to make sure it has great flavor and some personal significance to you and your partner. Tap a local mixologist to help you create a one-ofa-kind libation with your favorite spirit that your guests can enjoy. It’s important to also consider the time of year you’re celebrating, so you can land on a drink that has the perfect balance of in-season flavors and colors—and is the right temperature too. When in doubt, go classic with a mojito, margarita or martini, and add a few ingredients to make it your own (think: lavender, herbs like basil or mint, edible flowers, jalapeño or fresh fruit like raspberries). These elements are also a great way to tie in your wedding colors. Then, just give your drink a creative name and you’re all set.

Real Reflections

FEELING OVERWHELMED? KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE WITH THESE QUESTIONS FROM SELF-LOVE GURU SOPHIE GRAY.

OUR PRO Sophie Gray, founder of WayofGray.com, is a meditation and journaling pro. She’s obsessed with helping you reconnect with your inner self.

62

K

@wayofgray

Why am I getting married?

Wedding planning can be stressful when you lose sight of why you’re organizing this day in the first place. By returning to the main reason you’re saying “I do”— to spend the rest of your life with that person you love so much—you’ll find the stress of having the perfect salad dressing or the disappointment of your favorite flowers not being in season not so bad. At the end of the day, it’s your marriage you’re looking forward to most.

2

Am I associating how beautiful my wedding will be with my worth? Attaching your self worth to how perfect the day goes is a disaster waiting to happen. You’re more than how you look in your dress, how your wedding cake tastes or how perfect your photos are. You’re worthy exactly as you are. Take time to sit with this—if you’re tangling your self regard with your wedding (which happens to a lot of us) step back and allow yourself to understand that you are more than good enough. From there, focus on understanding your worth personally as you plan your wedding.

3

How can I surrender through the process?

The planning process may trigger stress, anxiety and a few freak-outs, and that’s okay and totally normal. Be mindful when these feelings come up—but also think about how you can compromise and relinquish control throughout planning.

TKM18SUM_STYPLAN_Wellness.L [P].indd 62

Your wedding is about you and your partner, but is there something your in-laws or family really wants to include? And is it worth the fight? Surrendering isn’t about losing—it’s about honoring yourself within the process, and being flexible as well (and remember—this is a big day for your parents too).

4

Am I compromising my partner and myself as we’re wedding planning? Ask yourself if you’re losing sight of you and your partner within the planning process. By exploring how you can surrender to the experience and where you may be compromising, you’ll see what boundaries need to be set. This could involve having a conversation with your families to outline what aspects of the wedding are most important to you, and that you won’t compromise on. It could also involve establishing specific times when you and your partner can discuss the wedding, so it doesn’t become all consuming. Explore what these boundaries look like and how they can create not only the best day of your life, but the best planning process and marriage too.

5

What’s truly important to me?

This sounds like a simple question, and it is—but it requires you to really clear the experiences that are not as important to you, which can result in a more laid-back approach to planning. Allow your intuition to come through. Beautiful flowers, an expensive dress and an intricate cake design may feel important now, but what if they come at the price of debt or a fight? Reflect on whether or not these small details are worth the stress and are more important than what you’re actually celebrating.

Some of the “it” ways bakers are creating standout cakes this year.

3-D TEXTURES

MARBLEIZED EXTERIOR

SEMINAKED

Even basic white buttercream feels fresh when the focus is on texture. Get inspired by fabrics like a cozy fisherman sweater or delicate Swiss dot, then ask your baker to re-create the texture on your cake.

Work several hues from your wedding day palette into your cake with fondant icing designed to look marbled. The result will be so smooth and sleek, guests may think it's the real deal.

Totally naked cakes had their moment—now it’s their slightly dressed-up counterpart’s turn in the spotlight. With a sheer outer layer of frosting, a semi-naked cake strikes a classy balance between rustic and refined.

GEOMETRIC D E TA I L I N G

H A N D - PA I N T E D PA T T E R N S

CELESTIAL D E TA I L S

Interesting, architectural accents are in. Ask your baker to echo any modern ones at your event space, like playing up your loft venue's ceiling look in fondant or using a wire geode to hold up two individual tiers of cake.

Delicate paintings (typically made on a fondant exterior using food coloring) can be pricey, but the payoff is big. Use them to mimic details like the colors of your grandma’s heirloom china or the blooms in your bouquet.

Look to the stars for the future of cake decoration—literally. Make this trend yours with a dramatic inky-blue fondant exterior that resembles the night sky or a gold-flecked pattern of the stars the night you got engaged.

You may love a rustic semi-naked cake, but if you’re hosting a black-tie ballroom wedding, that style may not jive. Before deciding on the look of your cake, figure out specifics about your event, like the venue, palette and vibe. That way, your cake will complement— and not compete with—your overall wedding look.

When deciding what size cake to order, first look to your guest count. Three tiers typically serve between 50 and "100, so if your list is in the hundreds, increase your order. Second, consider your venue. Hosting in a tent with a grand ceiling? Add Styrofoam tiers to up the height and make your cake more proportional to the space.

Cakes are generally priced by the slice and can range from $3 to a whopping $30 per slice (and beyond), depending on the flavors, filling and frosting you choose. If you have your taste buds set on an custom combo, put aside extra funds to cover it. This applies to decorative additions too. Fresh fruits and flowers can often be applied for a small fee, while delicate hand-crafted sugar blooms or intricate detailing will take a baker more time to create—and cost you more money.

Before your event, pass off your cake topper to your baker, planner or catering manager so they can place it on your cake for its big reveal. A classic figurine is an ever-popular choice, but more couples are using the cake topper (and even cake stand) as a moment of personalization in their day. Choose something that represents you as a duo, like a clay model of your pet, figurines of your favorite comic action heroes or a chic monogrammed acrylic pedestal. >>

There’s simply no way your cake will taste as good after spending a year in the freezer as it does on your wedding day, which is why our first suggestion to couples is always to sneak a slice at your reception. If you’re worried about getting a chance to sit down and enjoy it, ask a point person to set aside two pieces for you and your partner to enjoy back at your hotel that evening. Then, save the top tier for a celebration soon after, like returning from your honeymoon or your one month anniversary. Then, opt to buy a fresh version (in a similar flavor) to enjoy on your one year anniversary. If you simply must adhere to tradition, tightly wrap the tier in plastic wrap and place it in an airtight bag before freezing.

Due to its ingredients, buttercream can melt quickly, so it should be kept out of extreme heat, humidity or direct sunlight until serving.

A smooth sheet of sugar paste, often used for the polished exterior it lends. Pros love that it can be easily tinted and molded, making it a no-brainer for cakes that require impeccable detailing or a modern, smooth exterior. Most bakers will ice a cake with buttercream before finishing the exterior with fondant, as fondant alone isn’t as tasty.

GANACHE

SWISS MERINGUE

A decadently rich frosting with a fudgy texture. Ganache is made by combining chocolate and cream. Traditional chocolate will make it a dark brown hue that can’t be tinted, so ask your baker to make it wedding worthy with colorful fruit. Or opt for a white chocolate version, which can be dyed practically any shade.

Icing made by whipping egg whites together with sugar. Swiss meringue is a less popular choice for wedding cakes, but it has a light and fluffy appearance that makes it look instantly whimsical and romantic. The airy marshmallow flavor means it pairs great with fruit-based cakes and fillings, like lemon, raspberry or strawberry.

FU N FAC T

The custom of multi-tiered wedding cakes emerged from a game where the newlywed couple attempted to kiss over a higher and higher cake without knocking it over.

A fanciful fruit cake takes center stage at British weddings. Typically made from cognac-soaked dates, prunes, raisins, currants and orange peel, the cake is finished off with a marzipan or fondant topping, or left naked.

Italian couples opt for a millefoglie: crisp sheets of pastry dough layered with pastry cream, whipped cream, lemon curd, berries and more. Many couples even have a pastry chef prepare it on-site for their guests.

The French traditionally serve up a stunner of a dessert known as a croquembouche. The towering pyramid of cream puffs is drizzled with rich caramel and can be decorated with berries, fresh blooms or even sparklers.

Norwegians serve up brudlaupskling, a bread that became popular when white flour was rare in Norway. The sweet bread is topped with cheese, cream and syrup, then folded over and cut into small squares before serving.

To-be-wed couples in Bermuda top their confection of choice with a small cedar sapling. The sentiment is said to symbolize the couple’s growing love, and it’s planted by the newlyweds following their “I dos.”

Indonesian couples will usually have a cake known as kek lapis at their wedding. Made of layers of chocolate and vanilla and spiced with cinnamon or nutmeg, the cake dates all the way back to the Dutch colonial period.

Expert on Call

FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER ELIZABETH FOGARTY SHARES HER TIPS FOR PICTURE-PERFECT WEDDING PHOTOS.

What should couples consider when hiring their photographer? There are a lot of pros to choose from, so the process of finding the right photographer can be overwhelming. First, take a look at their portfolio and make sure you love their style. And ask for examples of real weddings they’ve shot in case their portfolio is just styled shoots (where everything is calculated and under control). Next, schedule a phone call or meet for a coffee. This will help you feel out your photographer and ensure you really gel, which is super important. They’ll be by your side the entire wedding day and you want to feel comfortable around them. How do you create standout, personal photos for your couples? A beautifully shot wedding involves two elements: a cohesive aesthetic and natural posing that feels authentic to the couple, their loved ones and the celebration. Both stem from working closely with my

TIP

couples while bringing their vision to life, resulting in a wedding portfolio that feels fresh and not overdone. Another key element is a mutual trust between myself and my brides and grooms. This starts as early as the engagement session—something to-be-weds should never skip. Look at it as an opportunity to get to know your pro and get comfortable in front of the lens so your personalities can shine through. What are your favorite shots to capture? I absolutely love a first look. I want to foster an environment where my couples feel comfortable expressing their true emotions, so I stand a little farther away to let them have that special interaction alone. Wedding days can fly by, so it’s helpful to have an intimate moment with just you two that allows you to take in the day before the pace picks up. If a couple is game to see each other before the aisle, I always suggest a first look.

Any other advice for to-be-weds? Really invest in your dream photographer. It’s the part of your day where settling will be your biggest regret. Your photos are what will help you relive your wedding, so you don’t want your cousin who just got a new camera to take them. Being a photographer is so much more than taking pictures. OUR PRO Elizabeth Fogarty is a photographer and industry educator based in Washington, DC. She runs her business alongside her husband, Gavin.

How would you describe your aesthetic and outlook on wedding photography? My style is a combination of fine art and editorial. I focus on authentic moments and aim to shoot images that are light and airy with a hint of romance. There’s so much pressure on couples to have a perfect wedding. I want my clients to enjoy their day, so I bring lots of good energy and always have a few jokes up my sleeve—even if some are super cheesy.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JADE + MATTHEW TAKE PICTURES

The design-centric city of Savannah, Georgia, set the scene for Carlos Lopez (above, right) and Daren Capirchio’s destination wedding at The Kimpton Brice Hotel. With 65 guests in tow, the Miami-based couple wed on Memorial Day weekend. “We found sticking to our budget difficult, but we had fun,” Carlos says of their DIY fete. “We just got creative wherever we had to.” DELIGHTFUL DISHES Food was the primary focus for the couple, who treated partygoers to savory Cuban and Italian hors d’oeuvres, a rum-soaked buttercream cake, mini ice cream sandwiches and a morning-after mimosa bar. DIY DÉCOR “Gold spray paint was our friend,” Carlos says of creating a custom ceremony backdrop crafted from dozens of paper prisms. “We did a lot of gluing while binge-watching Netflix over several bottles of wine.”

FRESH FLORALS “Giving your vendors creative freedom can really stretch your dollar,” Daren says of sharing an inspiration board with their florist, who arranged affordable in-season blooms for the bash. PHOTO-WORTHY PAPER Carlos and Daren ditched pricey menu cards and skipped favors, opting instead for splashy handmade stationery, Snapchat filters, gold-framed signage and a showstopping photo booth assembled from pastel paper tissue fans.

PAROS, GREECE While less famous than fellow Cyclades islands Mykonos and Santorini, Paros is just as Insta worthy. Picture gorgeous beaches set against the Aegean Sea and traditional whitewashed villages connected by footpaths. But don’t expect a sleepy vibe at sundown: Head to a beach bar or club (there are lots in Naoussa) at night to hit the dance floor. Combine with a trip to Athens, where you can roam the ancient ruins of the Acropolis.

MALLORCA, SPAIN Turquoise waters and stunning coastline (dotted with secret coves) make this Mediterranean island perfect for R & R. After soaking in some sun, get schooled in Mallorcan culture and tour historic castles, quaint towns and cathedrals. Check out cliffside restaurant Sa Foradada for can't-miss views and paella. Combine with a few days in Barcelona, an urban hub of colorful Catalan culture.

AZORES ISLANDS, PORTUGAL Go all in on adventure-hopping around these nine scenic volcanic islands in the Atlantic, off of Portugal’s mainland. Water sports, hiking, mountain biking and paragliding are big here. If you’re looking for something more chill, check out the islands’ beaches, thermal springs and amazing sunsets. Combine with a jaunt to Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, to take in the nightlife and some history.

Keep Calm & Carry On HOW TO CARRY ON YOUR WEDDING DRESS ON FIVE MAJOR AIRLINES. BY MAGGIE SEAVER

Between booking a destination venue and choosing the perfect florals, transportation logistics for your dress may have slipped your mind. Good news: Most airlines will allow you to carry on your wedding attire, which we definitely recommend (checking it is too much of a risk). If you want to play it really safe, you can purchase another seat on the plane for your gown. It sounds extra, but lots of brides do it for peace of mind and wrinkle protection. Find the nitty-gritty details by airline below, but always check their websites for the most up-to-date details.

160

K

Customers are allowed a garment bag in lieu of a carry-on (see website for dimensions). Keep in mind, only some American Airlines aircrafts feature closets for hanging garments, and those with the space give priority to passengers with other carry-ons that can’t be stowed overhead (think: wheelchairs, walkers or strollers). AA.com

2 Delta Air Lines Take advantage of Delta’s Early Valet program. As soon as you get to your gate, ask an agent about preloading. Prior to boarding, they’ll place your dress in the overhead bin directly above your seat, so no fretting about cramming it into an opening 12 rows back or not finding any space at all. Delta.com

3 United Airlines United Airlines encourages you to carry on any valuable, fragile or perishable belongings, including

TIP

“garment bags not designed for travel” (aka your wedding dress). The crew members will be as accommodating as possible with your wedding ensemble, space permitting. Visit its website for additional guidelines on dimensions. United.com

4 JetBlue JetBlue doesn’t have hanging space, but your wedding attire can be stored in an overhead bin. It counts as your carry-on, as long as your garment bag meets all baggage requirements. Fun fact: If you purchase a separate seat for your dress, it’s entitled to a carry-on. JetBlue.com

5 Southwest Airlines

Crew members will do their best to take good care of your wedding attire, laying a garment bag carefully in an overhead bin— either atop other suitcases or in its own spot, depending on the amount of space. Southwest.com

SET UP YOUR WEDDING WEBSITE A wedding website is the best way to include all the need-to-know info, like hotel room blocks, registries and directions, for guests—and it’s especially handy for a destination affair. Choose from so many fun (free!) design options on The Knot. Don’t forget to include personal details too, like your love story or attendant bios.

STATIONERY Red and white paper goods played up the mid-century vibe and coordinated with custom cornhole boards crafted by one of Gatlin’s bridesmaids. “Our stationer even created an illustrated map of Los Angeles that included our favorite local spots,” Gatlin says. “I was blown away.” CAKE Sweet Bavarian cream and strawberry mousse filled the couple’s three-tier confetti cake, which was adorned with whimsical mini replicas of their sweetheart chairs. “It was such a unique detail,” Gatlin says of the toppers. atlin Green (20 and an actress) and Austin Wojciechowski’s (23 and an actor) love story has all the cinematic markings of a Hollywood romantic comedy—dramatic breakup and feel-good final scene included. During a brief six-month split, Austin wrote, produced and starred in a movie that cast Gatlin as his lead love interest. The rest, as they say, is history. Gatlin and Austin got their happily ever after when the two wed in front of 300 guests in an eclectic, retro affair filled with mid-century furniture, vintage trunks, and colorful goblets, jars and bud vases. “We wanted to create an atmosphere that was fun and inviting for all our guests, while letting our personalities shine through,” Gatlin says. —Rachel Sylvester

FASHION Kimberly’s bridesmaids wore blush, floor-length dresses, while the bride accessorized her textured gown with an ivory tulle veil, pearl earrings and navy velvet sandals. STATIONERY Verdant English gardens and colonial Virginia inspired the botanical invitation suite. In order to keep guests cool throughout the ceremony, paper programs doubled as handheld fans. DESSERTS In addition to a lemon elderberry and red velvet cake, the couple served sweet and savory Trinidadian desserts, like molasses coconut cakes, papaya balls and pepper plums. FIRST DANCE The newlyweds chose Lionel Richie’s “You Are” for their first dance in front of their guests. “We went to his concert on our first date,” Kimberly says of the sentimental song choice.

hen Kimberly Brown (37 and an analyst) and Justin Dean (38 and a consulting partner) first met at a friend’s dinner party, they had no idea they’d eventually plan a celebratory bash of their own. Seeking a serene garden setting for their midsummer nuptials, the couple booked Woodlawn & Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House, where they jumped a ceremonial broom fashioned from wood the groom’s father gifted them. Towering boxwood centerpieces juxtaposed gray-washed farm tables, and sleek ghost chairs and cozy lounge setups were stationed throughout the grounds. “The indoor space felt like an extension of the outdoors,” Kimberly says. —RS

Postceremony, partygoers and a 14-piece band took to the one-of-a-kind dance floor custom painted for the occasion. “As everyone left the tent to line up for our sparkler exit, Suzett and I hung back to dance alone together,” Sam says. “It was a moment that’s still so vivid.” —RS

ome is where the heart is, and for Tim Goebel (left, 36 and a partner manager at Google) and Tom Luciano (33 and a senior account manager), home is exactly what they had in mind while planning their intimate nuptials at a boutique hotel. “Our wedding was about the company,” Tom says of inviting 45 guests to a reception that reflected the intimacy of an at-home meal. The pair tied the knot overlooking Newport, Rhode Island’s Easton Bay before retreating indoors to The Spiced Pear restaurant. A cellist and pianist performed classic jazz, but there wasn’t a dance floor in sight. “We wanted to focus more on the conversation and food,” Tom says— and each other, of course. —RS

FLORALS Sarah and Travis incorporated the Scottish emblem into her bouquet and his boutonniere to honor Sarah’s Scotch-Irish grandfather from Nova Scotia. ATTIRE Travis designed his three-piece suit with a Detroit-based haberdashery. Sarah wore a silk faille gown and, as a nod to the full moon of their wedding day, a black diamond ear cuff featuring the phases of the moon. COCKTAILS The couple paired custom drinks with each course throughout the day, starting with cocktail hour in a flower-adorned tent dedicated solely to aperitifs.

M

ichigan natives Sarah Power (33 and a senior manager) and Travis Linderman (38 and a relationship manager) created an alfresco event inspired by northern Michigan and its wilderness to show their guests why they love this area of the country. “I lived here for years and the smell of the pine trees on the water never really left me,” Sarah says. The pair wed in an open-air structure resembling a chapel, allowing them to have both the church and outdoor ceremony they desired. Black taper candles offset rose gold hues and textured fabrics, while a transparent tent showcased the environment. Plus, they included a Detroit staple: a gospel choir, who sang classic Motown tunes. —Stephanie Cain

RECEPTION Greenery hung above the long feasting tables topped with velvet linens, floral-print napkins, black flatware and pomegranates. “The tent was so thin you could see the stars,” Sarah says. CAKE The couple found a local baker to create the geode-themed confection out of buttercream and rock candy. PLANNERS “They created a festival in a forest for us, building the entire dream world from the ground up,” Sarah says of her planning team. “They gave our guests the experience of their lives. PERSONALITY TRAITS

Represented by the bull, this sign has two speeds: relaxed or ready to charge. Although Taurus has a reputation for being grounded and practical, she also has a softer side and is easily enamored with art and culture. DRESS HOROSCOPE

A pale blush dress with 3-D floral appliqué taps into this sign’s earthy yet romantic leanings. Since Taurus is ruled by the throat and tends to have an attractive decolletage, a plunging V-neckline is also a must. gown silhouette styles trumpet gown

mermaid gown

The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.

The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

a-line gown

ball gown

sheath

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

This slim, form-fitting silhouette hugs the body from head-to-toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

wedding party 101 The least you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.

bridesmaids • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the bridesmaid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the bridesmaid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your bridesmaids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the bridesmaids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your girls. Email works great for this.

sweetheart neckline

scoop neckline

one-shoulder neckline

groom & groomsmen • Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar.

250

• The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel

notched lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. peaked lapel

flower girls & ring bearers • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

TKM18SUM LOOKBOOK 01 (220-265).indd 250

• Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, the suit will pay for itself.

The hot season runs from May to November. 5 Don’t leave without spending Sunday afternoon at Shirley Heights Lookout, a restaurant perched on a bluff on the south side of the island. You’ll get a stunning panoramic view of English Harbour and the island of Montserrat, not to mention some lip-smacking barbecue.

The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 3

4 Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse dutyfree bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6

BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

December to April

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago. 2 Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your groom loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

2 Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds.

Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

6 To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay. 8 While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle.
