EDITOR’S NOTE

W E’R E I N T H I S T O G E T H E R As we go to press, an unprecedented pandemic is impacting our country in ways we’ve never experienced before. Schools and stores are closed and working from home has become the new normal. Another reality? Canceled weddings. My deepest hope is that by the time this issue hits stands our world is seemingly back to normal, but I know the repercussions of this will be felt for months. So while we all work to rebuild our way of life, we want you to know that The Knot is here for you via social (@theknot), online (TheKnot.com) and in these pages. Whether you’re forced to reschedule your wedding day or simply feel behind on planning due to weeks of social distancing, we’re here for you. We created the content of these pages before the global pandemic and we’ll be here when the dust settles, too. We’re all in this together.

WHY WE LOVE JACKIE AINA! We were fans of Jackie Aina even before she got engaged. Using her wildly popular YouTube channel as a platform (she has over 3 million subscribers!), Jackie is a leader in the conversation around inclusivity in the beauty industry, and has been instrumental in facilitating real change. We jumped at the chance to feature Jackie on our cover and talk to her about beauty standards in the wedding industry and so much more. Check it out on p. 127.

The key to capturing memorable moments at a wedding is... Staying aware! There are so many expectations of what wedding photography should be and which pictures are important to capture. It’s been my experience that the most loved pictures from a couple’s wedding day have always been of spontaneous and unplanned moments. One simple piece of advice is to take lots of horizontals showing the couple surrounded by all their guests. It’s wonderful for them to see the people that shared the day with them when they revisit the pictures. @deweynicks

If a to-be-wed wants to switch up their hairstyle before their wedding, what should they be mindful of? If you decide a last-minute chop or color is in the cards before your wedding, there are a few things you should consider. First, it’s so important that you have a trial or redo with the cut or color you’ll have on your wedding day. The day-of look you’re aiming for may not work with your new ‘do and your stylist can help address that. Past that, a trial is a great opportunity to gauge how long the styling process may take. Time will fly on your wedding day, so if your style takes two-plus hours, you may need to reconsider. @orell_roberts

What can couples do if they have different travel honeymoon destinations in mind? Prioritization! Work together to find a compromise. Identify what it is about the travel destinations you each have in mind that are appealing to you. Is it the beaches? The hiking trails? The historic landmarks? Once you’ve made a list of what you both want, you can work together to think of a happy middle ground. It may be tempting to fill up your schedule with activities, but you want to make sure you’re able to actually enjoy your vacation by having some downtime. Make a list of all the things you want to do and then draft an itinerary together. That way, you get the best of both worlds—a bit of @maddy___sims activity mixed with a lot of newlywed relaxation.

How can a couple experiment with mixing up their wedding day florals? Plants and flowers have so much expressive and playful potential beyond the classic crystal vase, so it’s important to have a sense of adventure and whimsy as you’re dreaming up designs with your pro. Think outside the Pinterest bubble if you want to make something truly new—consider referencing forms and ideas that at first glance seem to have nothing to do with florals as you seek inspiration. Recently, a couple asked me if I could channel Dario Argento’s beautiful 1977 Italian horror film Suspiria, and I was like, “Hell yes, I got you—this is going to be so fun!” @wifenyc

STYLE

FIND YOUR WEDDING We know—you’re probably wondering where you should even start (totally normal, btw). First, download our app and take our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe, (think: industrial with bohemian details). We’ll generate your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). EDITOR TIP Think about what you love as a couple—are you

homebodies or always looking for an excuse to dress up and hit the dance floor? Your wedding should be a true reflection of who you are, so let your personalities lead your style.

2

ORGANIZED

KEEP Not sure what to do when? Look no further than our totally customizable checklist. If you’re asking your future brother-in-law to officiate, you can cross “find an officiant” off your to-do list. Want to add extra entertainment? No problem. Bonus: Our budgeter will help you track your overall spending. EDITOR TIP Psst, it’s okay to go out of order or to not tick off

every to-do. Really. It’s also totally okay to ask for assistance from your crew or your wedding VIPs—they want to help!

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

COMPILE YOUR After sharing your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with recommended vendors. DISCOVER WHAT YOU LOVE You’ll start by swiping right on images you love—these will be added to your final board (you can always add more). There’s also room to add personalized, must-haves (think: taco truck, dog-friendly venue or room for a sangeet).

floral wizard or an epic cover band, book those pros first. Many in-demand vendors get scooped up early, especially in high season. Don’t panic: If your first choice is already booked, ask them for a recommendation. Chances are they have an industry BFF who can also help bring your vision to life.

DEFINE YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

REGISTRY

MANAGE YOUR People will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so a registry is a must-have. Build yours on The Knot Registry and add items from anywhere you shop with our universal registry tool. That means you don’t have to choose between bespoke Etsy finds and smart home tech from Amazon. Plus, your guests get a one-stop shopping experience—a win-win.

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your inspo-packed vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. Your series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” really looks like.

EDITOR TIP The Knot Registry also lets you ask for cash for

things like an epic trip to Bali or a down payment on a new home. Yes, you read that right: It’s okay to ask for $$$.

GUESTS

THINK OF YOUR A wedding website is clutch—for your guests and you. Fill your site with need-to-know info, like hotels and registries, then share it with your guest list. Your friends and family will be in the know, and you won’t be fielding “directions please” emails hours before you say “I do.” You can even stay on top of RSVPs with our handy built-in reply tool.

We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget—starting with your venue.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE We’ll send you helpful reminders along the way and create a day-of timeline to ensure smooth sailing.

EDITOR TIP Choose from free designs (coordinate

MEGHAN PAPIANO Designer and Founder, House of Catherine Meghan is the mind behind House of Catherine, a modern design studio that creates stationery and installations for events all over the country.

Coming up with the details that set your event apart is not only one of the most important parts of the process, but it’s also one of the most fun. As designers, couples come to us with the sole purpose of creating moments their guests have never seen before—and will never forget. If you’re looking to get personal with your day’s décor or paper, anything can spark inspiration, from the cocktails you love to sip with your fiancé and the places you love to visit together, to a photo of your pet or an illustration of the venue itself. The key is sharing and exploring ideas with your designer or planner—the more personal, the better, so don’t be afraid to dig deep! In the past, we’ve illustrated a couple’s pups on their cocktail napkins—and they were a major hit—as well as created coral reef-inspired signage to echo the spirit of Montauk, NY, the couple’s chosen wedding locale. We’ve even blown up a Biggie lyric and displayed it behind the band because he was one couple’s favorite artists. If you open up and get creative, you’re bound to come up with something extraordinary and memorable.

If you want to redesign an heirloom piece but still maintain that vintage feel, consider resetting the center stone in a new design with a similar vibe. For instance, if the ring had lots of vintage details, go for an ornate or vintage-inspired setting that also feels like you. Or, if your taste skews toward modern, opt for a minimalistic setting with more subtle details or engravings (say, on the gallery of the setting under the center stone, where only your eyes will see them) that channel the vibe of your heirloom piece. That way, you’ll have a ring that reflects your taste, but still pays tribute to your grandmother’s original jewelry. We’re so excited about our registry, but we want to make sure our picks are as sustainable as possible. Any ideas for keeping our registry items eco-friendly? A LY S S A L O N G O B U C C O Senior Style and Planning Editor

I love this ethos—and you’re spot on with what’s actually available in stores these days! We believe in buying sustainably so much so that we dedicated this year’s registry awards to it, choosing an earth-friendly product for each category. Check that out on p. 75— we have tons of choices that will inspire your own wish list. Another idea I love: Start a cash fund on your registry with the purpose of donating the proceeds to your favorite eco-conscious organization.

When the color experts at Pantone named Classic Blue their “it” shade for 2020, we’re pretty sure we heard to-be-wed couples around the world rejoice. The reason? The bold shade is perfectly suited to any celebration (and virtually any vibe), evoking an atmosphere that is at-once energized and totally chill. Use it as the star of your show by decking out your wedding party and reception space in the hue, or opt for subtle hits throughout the day in the form of modern stationery and signage or unexpected cool touches, like a retro getaway car or frosted edible favor.

old, bright and neon—not necessarily words you’d use to describe a traditional wedding, but here’s the thing: There is no traditional wedding in 2020. These days, it’s all about throwing a bash that feels true to you and your love. So whether that means a formal ballroom affair or a roller-rink party decked out in disco balls, we’re here to say: You do you. Case in point? This funky, fun and florescent party designed by the team behind Lucky Penny Creative. They took ’90sera neons and totally modernized them with help from of-the-moment florals, daring fashion choices and grounding black accents. If you’re looking to host a party this bold, you’ll want to pick-and-choose your moments. Going big in the floral department? Maybe tone it back with your cake’s decor and stationery suite. This way, your wow-worthy moments can truly hold center stage, and the whole day’s design isn’t competing for attention. The end result? A celebration as unique as your love story.

YOUR WEDDING AN D

COVID I F Y O U H AV E T O

POSTPONE CONTACT YOUR VENDORS IMMEDIATELY The first people to contact are the ones tasked with making it happen. Your pros should be understanding of your decision and can help provide additional guidance on next steps, from securing a future date to contacting guests. However, keep in mind that your vendors are small businesses and probably dealing with an influx of calls just like yours, so try to be patient. They also may be impacted by things like childcare issues as schools across the country are closed and figuring out how to keep their employees safe and healthy.

U P D A T E Y O U R G U E S T S The easiest and most effective way to relay your message is via your wedding website. A simple message that’s to-the-point is best. You may also want to consider creating a list of FAQs if you think your guests will have similar questions around travel refunds, hotel room blocks and your new date. Other communication options include sending your guests an email or splitting up the guest list between you, your partner and close friends or family so that you can start making calls.

C O N S I D E R A W E E K D A Y When working with your vendors to reschedule, try to keep an open mind. While your original date may have landed on a Saturday, securing another Saturday later in the year may not be possible. Consider

other days of the week like a Monday (really!), Thursday, Friday or Sunday. You’ll have a better chance of securing all of your vendors, and, yes, your guests will still attend!

CELEBRATE YOUR ORIGINAL DATE Even if it’s not the day you had planned, the date will always hold significance. Find a small, but meaningful way to celebrate. (Find 10 of our fave ideas on the next page!)

S E N D A ‘ C H A N G E T H E D A T E ’ While keeping your wedding website updated is the most convenient way to keep your guests in-the-know, consider mailing a follow-up “change-the-date” notice as another reminder. It only needs to include basic information like your new wedding date and location.

and social media apps have made it much easier to get planning accomplished from a distance. If you’re still in search of vendors, check out The Knot Marketplace for a comprehensive overview of wedding pros including reviews from couples who’ve previously hired them. Find vendors you like? Schedule a one-on-one conversation using tools like FaceTime, Google Hangouts and Skype. They can walk you through presentations of their past work and answer any questions you might have.

B U I L D Y O U R R E G I S T R Y If you’ve been putting it off, now is a good time to sit down with your partner and start registering. After all, there’s no better way to identify what your household needs than to, well, be at home all day. The Knot Registry allows you to add items from virtually anywhere that offers e-commerce as well as set up cash funds for things like a honeymoon, down payment on a home or new puppy!

SHOP FOR YOUR DRESS (YES, REALLY!)

I F YO U ’ R E

PLANNING G E T I N S P I R E D If you have yet to nail down your wedding theme, take The Knot Style Quiz to narrow down venue options, color palettes and even floral arrangement ideas. The quiz is an easy starting point; plus, it connects you to the best vendors who can execute your vision in your chosen destination. If you consider yourself crafty, this would be the time to get out the glue, scissors and poster board to create a physical vision board (or a virtual one on the platform of your choosing). Look at this time of self-quarantine as a gift of focused time and energy that you can use toward doing the proper research

Start by researching local bridal boutiques in your area to see what designers they carry within your budget range. This will help you narrow down the salons you’d like to visit once group gathering restrictions are no longer in place. Plus, your loved ones can look forward to a fun date where you model dresses, sip bubbly, and catch up—together. If you’re closer to your NARROW DOWN wedding date and need THE SALONS to shop virtually, that’s YOU’D LIKE TO possible too at certain VISIT ONCE boutiques. It consists RESTRICTIONS of setting up a video ARE NO LONGER consultation, at-home IN PLACE try-ons and taking your own measurements.

CONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER Whether you’re quarantined at home with your partner or hundreds of miles away, you can spend this time working through communication exercises. Services like the Lasting app can help you navigate possible premarital conversations—without excuses that you’re too busy or inundated with dinners, in-person meetings and more.

Before you write off Sedona’s crystal shops and vortexes—purported areas of concentrated energy—as woo-woo, book a stay at Mii amo. Located on sacred Native American grounds in Boynton Canyon, this 16-casita retreat specializes in spiritual healing. Guests can choose from three-, four- or seven-night journeys, most of which include two spa treatments a day, meals and use of the property’s pools, steam room and sauna. A typical day might start with intention setting in the Crystal Grotto followed by a guided

vortex hike to Cathedral Rock. Hit the café for a nourishing lunch with garden-fresh ingredients, then head to the spa with an open mind and experience Mii amo’s renowned alternative therapies. Master healers will guide you in interactive aura photography sessions, energy clearing work and Native American-inspired treatments like the Soul Seeker, which reconnects you with your inner self through guided imagery and soul journeying. $6,000 for a three-night, all-inclusive journey; Miiamo.com

An institution on California’s Central Coast, the Ojai Valley Inn has long been a favorite escape of wellness seekers. With 303 rooms nestled among 220 oak-shaded acres and a 31,000-square-foot Spa Village, the property feels like a private Shangrila. The Spa has plenty of options for pampering, but repeat guests come for its roster of resident experts specializing in everything from energy healing to chakra cleansing. After completing a personal wellness assessment, guests work with a nutritionist to fine-tune their eating habits. Holistic nutrition expert, Carolyn Maul, educates guests on topics ranging from anti-inflammatory foods to the power of probiotics. And the year-old Farmhouse, an epicurean center helmed by star chef Nancy Silverton, hosts gluten-free and vegan-themed cooking classes as well as more indulgent lessons centered around wine and cheese. A farm-totable ethos runs through the inn’s four main dining venues. You’ll find coldpressed juices and nutrient-packed veggie bowls at the Spa Café, and an Italian twist on California cuisine at Olivella. From $918; OjaiValleyInn.com

The ultimate yoga getaway for outdoor enthusiasts, Blackberry Mountain in Walland, Tennessee feels like your own private national park. Set amid 5,200 acres in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, the wellness-focused sister property to foodie favorite Blackberry Farm offers nearly a dozen styles of yoga, from hot power to mellow yin. The mid-mountain Yoga Loft serves as the main hub of om, but classes also take place on a picturesque outdoor platform with endless views, and silks are strung from treetops for aerial sessions. Accommodations include 18 cottages and a handful of homes, but

honeymooners should opt for one of the cozy Watchman cabins built into the side of the ridge. Blackberry’s experts can add on experiences to complement your practice. A vigorous vinyasa, for example, might be followed by a hike or a candlelight yoga class might conclude with suspended soundbathing and meditation. Unlike an ashram, you’re encouraged to indulge. Two restaurants serve dishes like mushroom and ramp bowls with Southern grains and woodgrilled rosemary quail. Ask the sommelier to pair your meal with wines from the 10,000-bottle collection. From $1,045, BlackberryMountain.com

MINDFULNESS It’s perfectly acceptable to sport workout clothes all day at the new Four Seasons Hotel Lanai. The brand’s first all-inclusive wellness resort pairs its signature service with the cutting-edge technology of Sensei, the well-being company founded by Larry Ellison and Dr. David Agus. Guests work with their guide to craft a personalized itinerary that might include thermal body mapping and restorative yoga. Anchored by a reflecting pond, the hotel oozes tranquility, while 10 teak spa hales, outfitted with Japanese ofuro tubs, are temples of R&R. One-on-one mindfulness coaching will help prepare you for practices like journaling and open-sky meditation. You’ll want to be present for meals at Nobu, where menus feature ingredients harvested from an onisland sustainable farm. From $4,500; FourSeasons.com/koele

Nearly 900 independent, locally-owned bridal retailers will participate in this SALE event meant to offer brides, bridesmaids, and wedding guests an unprecedented opportunity for substantial savings. Many bridal salons will extend the event through the following week (and longer). Check with your local salons. For a list of participating bridal shops, brides can visit www.NationalBridalSaleEvent.com. The site also offers brides a guide to successful shopping for a wedding gown as well as changing features such as the bridal-shop-of-the-month, and designer-of-the-month that brides will find useful year-round. Brides can visit our sister site ComeFindYourYes.com to learn how to choose the perfect wedding gown and why a full-service salon is the best place to shop.

“It’s a huge sale in July at bridal salons everywhere, and I got an amazing wedding dress at a really great price! I could try it on and my Mom and I both love it. BOUQUET Emily carried a warm mix of anthurium, ranunculus and roses. FAMILY STYLE Emily and Eli asked guests to watch the ceremony in a way they called “Oscars style,” which meant simply sitting at their dinner tables. TABLESCAPES Gauze runners, orange candles and metal vases topped tables. PROGRAMS Guests read from a newspaper-style bulletin, complete with a cartoon and “letters to the editors” written by friends. ART Still-life art inspired Emily and Eli’s design style, which included a hanging mobile. LOVE LANGUAGE The couple originally bonded over crossword puzzles, and Eli also used one to propose, so they included one in their programs, too. BACKDROP Emily and Eli said “I do” in front of a handmade structure, which they now use as a bookshelf at home.

s architects, Emily Kruse (27) and Elias “Eli” Logan (28) are pros at designing things to their liking— and their wedding was no exception. “Our day was like our personal style—very composed,” Emily says. “We’re artful and intentional. We approached it like a design project.” Though the couple created several of the day’s décor pieces, including their ceremony installation and ceramic vases, they did so with an emphasis on fun and minimalism over formality or perfectionism. “We took a lighthearted attitude toward the process,” Eli says. The pair switched up the day’s order, putting their cocktail hour before their vows—giving them plenty of time to hang with guests—and ended the night with a mini food-fight with friends, tossing around the pomegranate centerpieces they’d chosen. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

GOWN Emily’s sheath-style dress featured a few surprises, including a lace train and crisscross-style ribbon in the back. SEATING CHART All of the couple’s paper goods mirrored the arbor, the day’s centerpiece, hence the arched shapes of the seating chart display. CAKE The pair chose a dessert in one of their fave flavors to make at home: classic strawberry with buttercream. For the exterior, the couple opted for an ombré design finished with strawberries, bright ranunculus and other blossoms. RIDE Emily and Eli made their grand exit in her grandfather’s convertible. FAVORS Guests took home heartshaped cookies packaged in patisserie boxes inspired by Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel—but instead of the movie’s Mendl’s, the boxes read Mosby’s in honor of the pair’s pup.

#MAKETRADITION Emily and Eli honored the couples before them by erecting what they called a “wedding hall of fame.” The display included vintage photos of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents atop soft blue-painted plywood stands. “Our grandparents are super good with genealogy,” Eli says. “So we used them as resources to get all these old photos together.”

STATIONERY Smoky shades of crimson set the tone for the party on the pair’s suite. GET-READY GLAM Clenet and her ladies prepped for the day in Asian-inspired robes, complete with a red cherry blossom pattern. JEWELRY Clenet found accessory inspo in a surprising place. “I was watching Miss Universe and when Catriona Gray, Miss Philippines, won, I fell in love with her ear cuff,” Clenet says. “It’s modeled after the Filipino flag.” CENTERPIECES Tall gold vessels filled with anthurium, roses and dried palms towered over tables. CAKE A fan design decorated the couple’s dessert, which included layers of vanilla custard and dulce de leche. SECOND LOOKS At the reception, Jacob changed into a traditional barong tagalog. VENUE Clenet and Jacob said “I do” at the estate-like Park Chateau.

lenet Macalindong (28 and a registered nurse) designed her wedding to Jacob Shapiro (28 and a customs and border protection officer) as a love letter to their shared Filipino culture. “I’m Filipino and Jacob’s mom is Filipino,” Clenet says. “We first bonded over a shared understanding of our culture, from the food to the language.” Inspired by Crazy Rich Asians, Clenet envisioned a day full of glam touches and Asianinspired décor, including fan-like shapes and lots of vibrant red. “In Chinese culture, the color red brings good luck, vitality and happiness,” Clenet says. “My late grandmother was half Chinese, so the red was my way of honoring her.” On the day-of, Clenet walked down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling In Love”—the Kina Grannis version featured in Crazy Rich Asians, of course. — LB

#MAKETRADITION One of the ways Clenet and Jacob honored their shared Filipino culture was with a traditional money dance. “Typically, the bride and groom dance together and a male approaches,” Clenet says. “From there, the bride dances with him before a female approaches, and they clip money onto us with each dance.” However, the pair put a twist on the typical dance. “We wanted one big party,” she says.

FAMILY CIRCLE Gina and Alex took a hands-off approach with their squad’s dress code, simply instructing them to rock light colors. “I loved the mismatched, nonuniform look,” Gina says. FLOWERS Unexpected picks, including papayas, dates and garlic scapes, punched up the day’s blooms. VEIL Gina added even more color to her look by creating her veil, complete with tulle ribbon. BACKDROP Gina sewed the rainbow-colored quilt that hung as reception décor (and now decorates the pair’s nest). “We DIY-ed as much as we could,” Alex says. LOVE NOTES Gina surprised Alex by singing Kacey Musgraves’ aptly titled “Rainbow” at the ceremony, accompanied by her childhood guitar teacher. HAPPY FEET Guests took home cozy custom socks that read “Everything and lots of it.”

f course artists Gina Rockenwagner (31 and a designer and proprietor) and Alex Lake (32 and an artist) have a strong knowledge of color—they met in art school. After an April Fool’s Day proposal, the pair planned a bash full of what Gina calls “rainbow bright” hues. “We wanted everything to be super colorful and super playful,” Alex says. “We’re vibrant human beings.” One of the ways the couple kicked up the palette: textile garlands collected from Guatemala, Peru and Mexico, which they turned into a ceremony backdrop. Though Gina and Alex loved the colors of SmogShoppe’s existing greenery, the creatives also enlisted art school friends to flex their skills and make more décor, like drawing the Illustrations that decorated the seating chart. “We really put our BFAs to work with this thing,” Gina says. —LB

HOME VIDEOS Alex created videos to project onto the walls of the party, including footage of the pair’s late cat, Paws. “Seeing that was the one time on our wedding day I really cried,” Gina says. MENU Partygoers took their pick from a bread bar, complete with coastal English cheddar and Cambozola cheeses. “My dad’s a baker and he told us to take all the bread we wanted,” Gina says. “I took literally everything from his bakery.” CAKES Gina chose a triple-berry cake with layers of butter cake and whipped cream, while Alex went for a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Guests also grabbed cookies and berry cobbler—a major crowd fave.

TABLE NUMBERS Rachel and Sasha’s guests sat at tables named after different trees. PLATINUM PACK The duo affectionately dubbed their wedding party “The Platinums” or “platties,” for short. STATIONERY Rachel and Sasha found invitation inspo in scarab beetle necklaces owned by Sasha’s late mom. The couple’s designer added the insect to the suite’s wax seal. SMOOTH MOVES Though Rachel loved doing the hora, Sasha wasn’t quite so sure until after. “It was special to see pictures of all my favorite men holding me up,” she says. SIGNATURE COCKTAILS Guests sipped the Smokey Grapefruit, a Mezcal and grapefruit juice drink. RECEPTION The pair’s party brought the outdoors in, including hanging greenery. LINENS Rachel’s sister dyed the guests’ silk handkerchiefs.

uch of Rachel Weitzenkorn (31 and a clinical social worker) and Sasha Klupchak’s (32 and a professor and filmmaker) relationship has been marked by time spent in the great outdoors. After Sasha proposed on a boat in the Swiss Alps, the pair planned a wedding full of tributes to nature with a few artistic spins. “I grew up in Aspen and the mountains mean so much to us,” Rachel says. “We wanted it to feel like a Dutch still life painting in spring.” As Sasha says, “It had to be dark and moody, but not Goth and not too bridal.” The pair started the day with an outdoor ceremony, under the shadows of snowcapped mountains. “I loved sitting with Sasha under our chuppah just before our loved ones rounded the corner to witness our marriage,” Rachel says. “We just held each other and took in the view.” — LB

FRESH KICKS Tyrel slipped into a custom pair of Jordans for the day. CENTERPIECES Adar and Tyrel spent months searching high and low for vintage boom boxes and bike rims to top tables. In the end, the spray-painted pieces came from all over the country.

rooklyn was the only place for Adar Wellington (35 and a furniture artist and choreographer) and Tyrel Kirkham (36 and a vice president of merchandising and licensing) to tie the knot—it’s where they met, after all. “We were working for the Brooklyn Nets,” Adar says. “Tyrel was in merchandising and I was heading up all of the entertainment.” After a little persistence, the pair hit it off, thanks in part to a passion for music. Though the couple eventually moved to Cali, they knew Brooklyn had to be the backdrop for their vows and found inspiration in one of the borough’s most famous artists: Biggie Smalls. Not only did Tyrel use his poetry skills to work Biggie lyrics (among others) into his vows, but Adar relied on her eye for design to incorporate the rapper’s famous words onto the décor. — LB

Adar and Tyrel made it a priority to pay tribute to the family members they’ve lost on their wedding day. Not only did Adar wear a custom pendant containing her dad’s ashes to the ceremony, but the pair also held a moment of silence and lit two candles in honor of Tyrel’s parents and Adar’s father. Adar also quoted her dad in her vows, saying, “He told me, ‘The one will treat you like a star.’”

Q+A

GLAM GURU YouTube star and bride-to-be Jackie Aina is as passionate about inclusivity as she is about beauty in general. She gave us the scoop on why diversity matters, how to find the best pro for you and the wedding makeup trend she’s loving.

Q:

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE BEAUTY STANDARDS IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY SHIFT?

There seems to be a lack of diversity in how weddings are portrayed in the media. Even though I don’t know a ton about the industry, I do know from the magazines I’ve read and even the Instagram pages I follow that I always think, ‘Where are the black people? Where are the different cultures?’ Weddings are a part of every culture and I think that’s the beauty of them; they’re an opportunity to celebrate your beliefs and background. I would like to see more diverse faces and stories represented.

Q:

WHAT SHOULD TO-BE-WEDS LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A GLAM TEAM?

Q:

ANY TIPS FOR FINDING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION SHADE FOR YOUR SKIN? I always say match your foundation to the center of your chest, because you want the color of your face to match your body. While it used to be standard to test foundation against your neck, the issue with that is sometimes your neck is lighter or darker than the rest of your body. A lot of us actually tend to be tanner around the

Q:

IS THERE A BEAUTY TREND YOU CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF RIGHT NOW? This isn’t just a bridal beauty trend, but I’m loving soft glam. It’s inspired by ’90s makeup and is all about neutral tones (think: tan, taupe and mauve) that match your complexion. For someone with my skin tone, that might mean browns and plums, while someone who’s a little bit lighter might look better in tan and taupe. It’s just a really beautiful, full face of makeup that feels glam but it’s not too harsh or dramatic—it’s like highlighting and contouring the entire face including the eye and lip instead of just your face.

Q:

IS THERE A BEAUTY TREND YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE LESS OF? Over-the-top lip fillers. Also, excessively tanning yourself to the point where you end up looking like a different race. Keep it cute and bronzed—but don’t overdo it!

Q:

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON OPTING FOR BOLD OR SUPER TRENDY MAKEUP ON YOUR DAY?

If your overall style is inconsistent, and one day you want to wear neon lips and the next day you’re into bright pink hair, I don’t think you’re going to look back on your wedding photos and regret wearing bold or trendy makeup on your day. Ultimately, whatever YOU DON’T reflects your style and whatever WANT TO makes you feel the most beautiful H I R E S O M E O N E WHO CAN’T is what you should go with. If you WORK WITH A want to wear a black wedding VARIETY OF gown, then wear a black wedding COMPLEXIONS gown. If you want neon lashes, AND HAIR then wear neon lashes. I think you TEXTURES. should go with what truly makes you feel the most confident.

Q:

If you’re interested in hiring an artist, pay close attention to their portfolio. Look for videos that show them doing hair or makeup, because that’s a surefire way of making sure their work is legit and in line with your vision for your day. If you’re a person of color, looking for diversity in their portfolio is important because even as it pertains to your bridal party, you don’t want to hire someone who can’t work with a variety of complexions or hair textures. And finally, having a trial is a must. You don’t want to find out how your hair and makeup is going to look the day of your wedding. Schedule it a few months before your day—you could even use your engagement photos as a test run.

perimeter of the face and sometimes around the mouth, so the chest pulls it all together. And, you can always highlight and contour accordingly. For example, if someone’s face looks noticeably darker than their chest, they can contour. If it’s noticeably lighter, they can highlight.

WHAT’S YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCT FOR YOUR OWN WEDDING?

I’ll definitely bring my lip color with me because that’s always the first thing that fades. I’ll probably also have lash glue on hand just to be on the safe side.

MAKING THE CUT of her wedding—but then she chickened out. Though risky, this plan seemed like both the solution to my bridal hair woes and a way to shake things up on my day. I started to look for a stylist who would agree to go against the advice of every wedding magazine, and chop five inches off my hair before I walked down the aisle. After a little bit of legwork I found Bianca, who worked in New York. The catch? I live in Denver and was getting married in Connecticut, so I wouldn’t meet her until the morning of my wedding. Since we couldn’t meet in person, we coordinated over email. I didn’t tell my fiance, Hunter, about my plan. Talking about it made me nervous. Everyone I told seemed worried I wouldn’t be happy with my haircut, but I was confident in my decision. My only fear was that Bianca would have second thoughts and wouldn’t show up. She did show up, though. She cut my hair into a sleek lob the morning of my wedding while my bridal party waited downstairs. She kept

saying, ‘I can’t believe I’m chopping off your hair and you’re so calm.’ But I knew I was going to love it. Hunter’s reaction was funny. My surprise haircut was about me, not him, but it was fun to keep him on his toes. He was so overcome with emotion as I walked down the aisle he didn’t notice at first. As soon as we walked out of the church the first thing he said to me was, “YOUR HAIR!” He thought it was awesome. I told him I’d planned it for a while but hadn’t expected it to go so seamlessly. Looking back, I do have just one regret: I wish I’d been bolder and gone even shorter.

’m not emotional about my hair. Some women change their hair and freak out about it for weeks—that’s not my deal. But having my hair styled professionally (say, at my friends’ weddings) does make me emotional. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been happy with getting my hair done beyond just a standard blowout. Elaborate updos and curls never felt like me. Seriously, is there a worse feeling than hating your hair and being photographed all day? When I got engaged, I started to wonder what I was going to do with my hair at my own wedding. Just looking for inspiration gave me anxiety— there didn’t seem to be options out there that would make me feel like the best version of myself. I wanted something timeless—I didn’t want to look back at photos and think, ‘Oh God, that’s when that hairdo was in style.’ Then I remembered my friend Becky. She had a similar dilemma and decided to cut her hair into a foolproof lob (or long bob) on the morning

Rather than wear a “bridal” updo that didn’t feel like her, Kelly Steadley cut her hair into a lob. The twist? She did it the morning of her wedding.

Gorgeous skin isn’t just about makeup. In her new book, Glow from Within, celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas details what to snack on—and what to limit—for a flawless complexion.

Founder and CEO of wedding hair and makeup company Beautini, Brittany Lo believes everyone needs some beautifying before their “I dos.” Below, her tips on working with a groomer or makeup artist.

A higher intake of healthy fats like avocado, oily fish and nuts leads to stronger skin cells (read: fewer wrinkles).

PROTEIN

HAVE A TRIAL

Lean proteins like salmon, beans and tofu are some of the most important elements in building firm, pliable skin.

If you’re opting for basic cover up, a trial isn’t necessary. But if you’re used to doing your makeup a certain way or are going for a more dramatic look, do a test run before your day to make sure you’re on the same page as your artist.

SPEAK UP

WATER

Water improves the skin’s thickness and density. Plus, hydrated skin cells swell, reducing the appearance of fine lines.

HERBS

FATS

Find a vendor with a diverse group of artists of different backgrounds. That way, they’ll be ready to tackle anything you throw at them— whether it’s full makeup or just grooming.

Herbs and spices like turmeric, rosemary, ginger and fennel have important antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Don’t be afraid to give your artist specific feedback if you’re not happy with your look. If you’re coordinating makeup or grooming on behalf of your groom, make sure he’s in on the conversation and comfortable with the direction.

GREENS

Drinking green juice and eating vegetables keeps your digestion on track and is a great way to get vitamins and minerals.

HYDRATE

GLOW DI M M ERS Sweets slow down collagen production and your lymphatic system, which can lead to saggy skin and break outs.

SUGAR

Drink plenty of water at the rehearsal dinner and don’t overindulge in salty foods or alcohol. Hydration is key for skin that wears makeup well.

PREP YOUR SKIN

ALCOHOL

Hitting the cocktails too hard interferes with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients, causing dullness and puffiness.

We knew we wanted timeless looks for our wedding. I’ve been doing hair and makeup for over 15 years, so I did my own. I used Temptu airbrush makeup and rose gold highlighter, plus Kevin Murphy hair products. Cameron had pros help him with his look. His makeup artist applied a combo of blush and contour to perfect his skin, while his hairstylist used a thin curling iron to touch up and define his curls. Our wedding day glam definitely helped our photos pop even more!”

Feel free to ignore these outdated hair and makeup tips.

1 HEAVY MAKEUP IS REQUIRED If bringing the drama is your vibe, then you do you. But if you usually go au naturel and don’t feel like yourself with heavy glam, it’s okay to opt for a minimalist look—or to even skip makeup altogether. If you’re working with a pro, be sure to mention your preferences.

Prior to the wedding, I had a shaved and tapered haircut. So for the first time in over three years, I decided to grow my hair out. As it began to grow out over the course of a year, I knew I wanted my wedding hair to complement the curl pattern on the Sabai of my dress (a Sabai is a traditional shawl-like garment). Being both Black and Thai, I thought I pulled off a look that represented both sides of my background.”

I wanted to feel like myself on my wedding day, and I feel the most like myself when I have pink hair. I’ve been dyeing my hair since 2016, so it didn’t even occur to me that it was an offbeat choice for a bride. I even shopped for gowns with my pink hair in mind. Once I found the dress, I started making a veil that wouldn’t cover too much of my hair. I wanted a flower crown, but I went with small flowers to avoid taking away from my ’do!”

Naturalistas: This one’s for you. Stiff bridal updos were all the rage in the past, but these days the only requirement is that your wedding hair is a true reflection of yourself.

3 A SPRAY TAN IS ESSENTIAL While there’s nothing wrong with boosting your tan with some light bronzing, a faux glow is not the only way to look camera-ready. Make sure to drink plenty of water, exfoliate and moisturize regularly in the weeks leading up to your day so you look—and feel—amazing.

I’ve been wearing glasses every day since the fourth grade, and over the years they’ve become my favorite accessory. A lot of people told me that I should wear contacts on my wedding day because I would look prettier, or that there would be a glare on my glasses in photos. But I decided I wouldn’t look or feel like myself without my glasses. So I ignored the naysayers (I highly recommend adopting this vibe) and I’m really glad I did.”

Q:

IF YOU WANT TO WEAR YOUR NATURAL HAIR ON YOUR DAY, HOW SHOULD YOU PREP BEFOREHAND? Style your hair naturally and pay attention to timing: Do you like it best when it’s freshly styled or a few days after? For example, when rocking my fro, I tend to love it most on the third or fourth day. No matter your hair type, it’s important to test drive your wedding hairstyle before your day, just to make sure you love it.

Q:

WHAT SHOULD BRIDES WITH TEXTURED HAIR LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING A STYLIST?

Always do your research before using a new hairstylist. Make sure they’re comfortable working with a variety of hair types and know what products work best for you. Once you find someone that meets your criteria, schedule a trial a few months before your wedding.

Q:

WHAT HAIRSTYLES WORK BEST FOR TIGHT CURLS, LOOSE CURLS AND WAVES?

The best part about hair is that it’s versatile, so don’t feel limited to certain styles if you have a curly or wavy texture— these are just suggestions. For tighter curls, try leaving your hair big and free. I also love the idea of adding small flowers throughout your ’do. T H E B E S T T H I N G Loose curls are great for any wedding updo because they’re generally easier to style. Half ABOUT HAIR up, half down is beautiful, either with a curly IS THAT IT’S ponytail at the top or a dramatic, high bun VERSATILE ... DON’T FEEL with loose curls. Waves always look beautiful LIMITED IF YOU down, especially when cascading down the H AV E A C U R LY back and shoulders. Add hair accessories (if TEXTURE. you’re feeling it) for a more formal feel.

Q:

ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HAIR FRESH AND FRIZZ-FREE THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY?

During styling, make sure your pro is using a great frizz-control product, especially if you aren’t wearing a more structured updo that locks your hair into place. Soft- to medium-hold hair spray will also help to stave off fuzzies all night long.

Q:

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH MULTIPLE TEXTURES (SAY, GOING FROM RELAXED TO NATURAL HAIR)? The big question here is: To do a big chop or not to do a big chop? It’s a totally personal choice. You can either cut off your hair and start from scratch, or try styles that protect your hair (such as braids or extensions) during the growing out process. You can also manipulate your curl pattern so the relaxed part blends with the natural part better by wearing twist outs or flexi rod sets until the evolution of your hair is complete.

WEDDING GOWNS 101 Searching for the one? Study up on everything you need to know before you hit the salon.

A GUIDE TO DRESS SILHOUETTES

Ball Gown

A-line

Mermaid

Perfect for the bride looking to make a statement, there’s nothing subtle about a ball gown. This classic silhouette has a fitted bodice and a voluminous full skirt.

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a skirt that flares out in—you guessed it—an A shape. Consider it a halfway point between a sheath and a ball gown.

Va-va-voom. This sultry silhouette has a fitted bodice, waist and hips, and dramatically flares out at the knee. It’s a great option if you want to show off your curves.

Trumpet

Sheath

This slim silhouette A toned-down version skims over the body, of the mermaid, the falling straight to skirt of this gown flares the floor below the out just below the hips, hips. What a sheath creating a semi-full dress lacks in volume, shape (like the bell it makes up for in of a trumpet) without versatility—it works with nearly every fabric. any extra volume.

Empire A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.

S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.

H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 4

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse duty-free bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

6

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9

Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane ride from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike.

With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks. 9

4

If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise.

5

10 Dance the night away in “irie” oblivion to live soca, reggae or calypso at Harbour Lights or hot spot Red Door Lounge.

First made more than 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors.

If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7

Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant. 9

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

LAST LOOK

Skating is how we met—Chris was in Southern California building a skate park, and friends set us up on a blind date,” Marin says. “It’s continued to pull us closer together ever since, so including rollerskates and a skateboard into our day just felt right. After the ceremony, Chris changed into Vans, I laced up my skates and we left hand in hand—before dropping into the ramp with a kiss.”
