What’s your favorite way to incorporate neon into a wedding reception? We love using it as an entrance piece to say, “Welcome to the party.” Neon is awesome as a photo booth backdrop too—all the pictures have an eye-catching setup and are totally Insta worthy. And our new table numbers are becoming a favorite. They bring such an incredible sense of light to a room. So basically, we love neon in any form at a wedding and beyond—the sky’s the limit. @nameglo

MAKEUP ARTIST Cover and “Marry the Night” (p. 234)
What’s your best advice for a bride thinking about her wedding day look? The most important thing is you look like yourself and you simply enhance the beauty you already possess. I suggest highlighting your best features so your personality shines through. It’s important not to try a completely different look or heavier makeup on your wedding day—it can make you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. You want to recognize yourself and look like the best version of you. Just keep it simple, and let the dress and your inner beauty stand out and shine. @steffiwillmann

Start with some personal connection—whether it’s that feeling of a place you visited and loved, the lilac in your grandmother’s garden or prickly pear from your hometown. Then think about how to incorporate something meaningful into your arrangements. It may be a very subtle detail and your guests may not notice, but when you and your partner enter the room knowing there’s a symbol of a place, time or someone that brings you joy, it will make your wedding day that much more layered with love. @doan_ly

My fiancé and I want to have a receiving line, but our day-of coordinator thinks it will take too long and suggested table visits. What should we do? @ilovebeachmusic The day-of coordinator is working for you. She gave you an alternative to a receiving line but it doesn’t mean you have to do it.
@scribe95 We did a receiving line at the church following the ceremony for about 170 people. It really only took about 15 to 20 minutes.
TKM17WIN_FOB_The_Knot_Com_Social.L [P].indd 50
@holyguacamole79 We did table visits and our day-of coordinator was very helpful. She escorted us to the tables and made sure we didn’t spend too much time at any of them.
We Want to Hear Your Story If it seems like your social feeds are flooded with engagement news each winter, it’s because they are. With multiple holidays taking place between November and February, couples find it to be a perfect time to pop the question—and about 37 percent do just that. To celebrate this uptick in engagements, we’re giving away an amazing prize to the couple with the best proposal. Go to TheKnot.com/proposalseason starting November 15 to share your story and be entered to win.

Finalize all of your flower arrangements with your florist. Address your invitations or hand them off to your calligrapher. Finalize the rental list (tables, chairs, linens and so on) with the caterer or rental company. Purchase any wedding day accessories for you and your partner. Think: jewelry, shoes, a tie and more. Taste test some flavors and complete your wedding cake order. Also order the groom’s cake if you’re having one. Schedule dance lessons (they’re the perfect excuse for a date night). Buy wedding rings—yes, it’s totally normal to freak out (in a good way) in the store.

MONTHS date: ______ /______ /______
Mail your invitations at the six- to eight-week mark. RSVPs should be due one month before the wedding. Begin writing your vows. Go to your first fitting. Be sure to bring along whatever shoes, undergarments and accessories you’d like to wear on your wedding day. Finalize the cocktail hour and reception menu with your caterer. Having an after-party? Take care of those eats too. Order your ceremony programs. As you’ve been checking off your to-dos in the app, we’ve been working to build you a custom day-of timeline. Check it out, then share it with your pros and wedding party.

MONTH date: ______ /______ /______
Once you’ve got your final head count, share it with the caterer, cake baker and site manager, and finish up your reception seating chart. Pass on requests from your pros, like a table for the DJ, to the site manager. Go to your last fitting. Designate point people for any day-of tasks. Confirm all final payment amounts, details and deliveries with your pros (and don’t forget tips).
2-3 DAYS

Steam the dress or suit if wrinkled. Touch base with the ceremony and the reception sites to go over the schedule and points of contact. Pack an overnight bag for the wedding night (include outfits for any day-after events, like a good-bye brunch). Deliver welcome bags to hotels (staff will usually hand them out at check-in).

Figure out how to get a local marriage license. You need one to make your “I dos” official.
Compile a must-take photo list for your shooter. Keep it under a dozen so you get the shots you really want.
Finalize your ceremony outline and readings with your officiant.
Check off your “something old, new, borrowed and blue.” Put together a day-of emergency kit (bandages, deodorant, fashion tape, concealer).
Pass off the marriage license to your officiant.
Send out rehearsal dinner invites.
Rehearse the ceremony and enjoy the rehearsal dinner.
Write thank-you notes for gifts as they arrive (you’ll thank us later). Talk with your band or DJ about your playlist. Let them know what songs are must-haves and definite do-not-plays.
Put together welcome baskets or bags for out-of-town guests.

I’ve heard a lot about airbrush makeup— should I do it for my wedding? Brittany Lo: Airbrush is a popular option for bridal makeup, but it’s not for everyone. It really depends on your skin type. Consult with your makeup artist during your trial and see if they would recommend it for you. Then use your trial as a way to test the look—how do you feel about it initially, how do you think you look in it and how does it wear throughout the day? Both traditional and airbrush foundation should last all day, so try both to figure out which is best for you. In general, if you have normal to oily skin, airbrush may be a great choice, but if your skin tends to be dry, the makeup could eventually get flaky. Another thing to consider is while airbrush application can be quicker, it can be harder to touch up after all those emotional happy tears.
ST YLE

OF BRIDES HAVE A MAKEUP TRIAL BEFORE THE WEDDING
I’m having trouble choosing my bridesmaid bouquets—where should I start? Carley Roney: Bridesmaid bouquets typically echo the style and shape of the bride’s but are slightly smaller. Think about your bouquet—do you have a favorite flower in it? Is it a tight bundle or overflowing and wild? From there you can model your attendants’ bunches after yours. To mix it up, swap exact flowers for blooms in similar shades or even stick with just greenery. The bouquets should complement their outfits and your style, but they don’t have to match perfectly. PLANNING
What are some budget-friendly activities to keep guests entertained at the cocktail hour or reception? Mary Chatman: If you’re having an outdoor wedding, include games like ring toss and Jenga during your cocktail hour. They’re always fun and interactive, plus you can keep them for future backyard parties with friends. For the reception, Mad Libs or crossword puzzles at tables can be the perfect ice breaker to get your guests engaged in conversation. But don’t stress too much about providing entertainment—let your DJ or band take the lead and do what they do best. Remember: Dancing doesn’t cost a thing, and doing something like a soul train line is a great way to get guests on their feet and on the dance floor. You can even come up with your own routine to a specific song and teach your friends and family members as a way to ensure they’ll remember your wedding every time they hear that tune.

ADVICE
COCKTAIL ATTIRE Slightly less formal than black tie, a cocktail dress code states that men should wear a suit and tie, while women wear a cocktail dress or dressy suit.

MAID OF HONOR Also known as MOH, the maid of honor is a friend or relative of the bride designated to lead all bridesmaid duties. If the chosen attendant is married, the MOH stands for matron of honor instead.

PER PERSON The PP that appears next to the pricing you see on your contracts indicates the cost per guest. You’ll want to keep an eye out for this type of pricing structure on anything that involves your catering or liquor choices.
MARRIAGE LICENSE Obtained from the state registrar’s office where you plan to tie the knot, a marriage license grants you permission to legally wed (your officiant needs this to make it official). After the signed license is filed, you’ll receive a marriage certificate.
OVERTIME Sports fans probably already know this one. Like a football game, wedding receptions can go over the intended time frame and into overtime. If the wedding is extended, OT fees may apply for the venue, as well as the band, photographer or other vendors you’ve contracted on an hourly basis. Be sure any OT fees are spelled out clearly in your contracts so the rate won’t be a surprise.
SAVE-THE-DATE Wedding STDs are a good thing! A precursor to the formal invitation, a save-the-date notifies guests to mark their calendars for your day. Etiquette suggests sending them out six to eight months before your wedding.
PROCESSIONAL AND RECESSIONAL The processional is the entry of the wedding party into the ceremony—the officiant, groom(s), attendants and/or finally the bride(s). The recessional is the exit.

of 400 guests, but only maybe 50 of them were actually my friends. At the time I was grateful with what I was given, but who I am now and what I want is completely different. Most importantly I feel blessed to have a second chance at love, but as a wedding planner, to have a second chance to plan my wedding is also priceless. I want to figure out ways to make this wedding more personal. Kevin and I are getting married in [our home] New Orleans because we want everyone we’re close with to be there. We’re writing our own vows, and my brother will be officiating. The ceremony will revolve around Kevin and me, and we’ll only have two witnesses standing up with us: his sons. I think our age came into play when we decided not to have a wedding party, but close friends and family members went dress shopping with me and will be with me on the morning of the wedding. I’m not having a shower either, based a little bit off of the fact that this is a second marriage, but I am having a bachelorette party. No matter how old we get, any excuse to celebrate with my girls will definitely be welcomed. All in all, I don’t feel I’m planning a second Kelly Sherlock wedding. MAKEUP LESSON
Make It Last
CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST DANIEL MARTIN GAVE US THE SCOOP ON APPLYING FOUNDATION THAT STAYS PUT FROM YOUR FIRST LOOK TO YOUR AFTER-PARTY. STEP 1/PREP
» Start by applying a water-based serum
OUR EXPERT Daniel Martin is a celebrity makeup artist who’s worked with Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth and Bella Hadid. @danielmartin the flat edge of a tapered makeup sponge is the perfect shape for contouring
for a hydrating boost that will help makeup go on smoothly, then follow with a waterbased moisturizer. It’s important to stay consistent with the formulas you use to achieve flawless coverage. If your skin care is water based, use a water-based foundation as well. Oil and water don’t mix. STEP 2/COLOR CORRECT
» After prepping skin, use color-correcting concealers to neutralize any discoloration before adding your foundation. Green correctors are ideal for canceling out redness around the nose and covering blemishes. For fair skin, try a peach concealer to cover blue-ish areas like dark under-eye circles, and for darker skin tones, use a yellow corrector. STEP 3/BLEND
» After color correcting, apply your foundation with a foundation brush. Start in the center and blend out toward the ears, temples and chin. For the most even coverage and a dewy finish, continue buffing with a damp makeup sponge. STEP 4/SET

powder into the skin with a powder puff. A translucent powder will blur fine lines and pores, while a tinted powder that matches your skin tone will give extra coverage. STEP 5/FINISH
» Complete your look by misting your face with a setting spray. It will keep your makeup in place for hours, even if you’re dealing with heat and humidity.

T he Dapper G room
MEN’S HAIRSTYLIST AND FOUNDER OF V76 BY VAUGHN, VAUGHN ACORD, HAS ALL THE SOLUTIONS TO ANY PREWEDDING GROOMING DILEMMAS. What are the essential products a groom should use for everyday shaving and facial hair maintenance? Grooming is more than just hair care. Healthy facial hair comes from the healthy, hydrated skin underneath, so you should pay attention to what your skin needs. Start with a good, exfoliating cleanser you can use on a daily basis. Exfoliating will help clear away impurities and smooth out the skin for a closer shave. If you have a longer beard or coarse hair, use a beard conditioner in the shower to help soften the whiskers. Afterward, apply a light beard oil for even more moisture. How can a guy get rid of unexpected razor burn or ingrown hairs before the wedding? Any quick fixes? Razor burn is a mild skin irritation that happens when you use a dull blade or shave too often. It should go away on its own within 24 hours. Ingrown hairs are an infection that are a bit tougher to get rid of. Using an astringent with salicylic or glycolic acid can help clear the skin, but it’s much easier to prevent ingrown hairs than it is to treat them. Always start with a clean, sharp blade and take your time shaving—there’s no need to rush.
How can a guy make sure his hands and nails are ready for close-up ring photos? Your wedding is an ideal time to treat yourself to a manicure, a professional haircut or even a massage. Handshake maintenance is a must, especially for men who don’t normally have any treatments done. If you’d rather care for your nails at home, you should invest in a great nail brush and a sturdy pair of nail clippers. Use the brush to clean and buff your nails while you shower. The hot water will soften the skin, making it easier to push back cuticles and clip nails. If you’re worried about cracked, dry cuticles, try applying a little Neosporin cream to heal your skin. What about eyebrow maintenance? Is it important? You can always clean up your brows if you want, but don’t think it has to be a wedding day necessity. If you’re concerned about the shape of your brows, you can either go to a professional groomer or take care of them on your own. Tweeze any long, errant hairs and keep brows in place with a soft hold wax or even leftover beard oil. Exercise a very light touch when tweezing— you don’t want to end up with uneven or overplucked brows.
THE ESSENTIALS Before saying “I do,” add these items to your “groom”-ing routine.
Beard oil, $19, V76.com
Buff and Wash facial gel, $120, Sisley-Paris.com

And remember, the type of products you’re using on your skin and the ingredients in them matter. Traditional, soapbased shaving creams and foams will dry out the skin, causing irritation, which can lead to ingrown hairs when you shave. Look for grooming products with hydrating ingredients like vitamin E or coconut oil.

WANT TO SET UP A PREWEDDING WORKOUT PLAN? HERE’S HOW TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST WHEN YOU SAY “I DO.” BY STEPHANIE CAIN
OUR EXPERT Mary Ann Browning is a 20-year veteran of the fitness industry who has trained celebrities and wedding pros like Vera Wang, and has developed her trademark Browning Method. @browningsfitness
9 MONTHS
Start making fitness a habit to increase your endurance. Schedule regular time on your calendar to exercise and stick to it—showing up is sometimes the hardest part. Begin with cardio: Walk, jog, run or hit the bike for a sustained period of time to get your heart rate up. “It’s like training for a race—you have to build your base,” Browning says of focusing on endurance before tackling anything else. “If you start out too hard, you’ll burn yourself out.” Change up the types of cardio as you feel more comfortable exercising. This variation helps condition your muscles, prevents injury and sets you up for success when you begin toning the parts of your body you want to highlight on your wedding day. >>

We think you look great just the way you are. But if you want to tone up or streamline your physique, we have some tips. Whether you only hit the gym once in a while or run every morning, our pro Mary Ann Browning shares her get-fit timeline that works for everyone. The key? Balance. Make progressive increases over the course of nine months, and be honest with yourself about your workout goals. With commitment, you’ll condition your body, blast extra weight, tone and relieve stress. Our plan suggests you kick it off early, not only to ensure results that will last beyond the wedding, but to curb your anxiety if you miss a workout along the way.
9/26/17 11:44 AM
FITNESS
•••
wear cross-trainers with great traction to prevent slips during outdoor workouts
3 MONTHS
Now’s the time to tone and sculpt, so pick up those dumbbells. Target your back, since that muscle group includes the biceps and triceps and many dresses show off these areas. It also contributes to good posture, which enhances a svelte figure and builds overall strength that boosts your metabolism. Don’t fear that lifting weights will bulk you up—it’s often what you eat that’s to blame. For the best results, pair exercise with nutrition. Strive to balance your workouts with meals full of healthy veggies and cut excess sugar, especially in drinks like soda or cocktails.
•••
138
K
Now that you’ve built endurance, it’s time to add interval training into the mix. This technique—a circuit of highenergy activity followed by lower intensity movements—blasts fat and will prep your body for strength training. Browning recommends you focus on big picture goals before training. “A mistake I see women make is to immediately start squatting and lunging,” she says. Instead, try speed intervals (see Get Fit Faster below) two to three days a week, interspersed with bike rides, slow jogs or an aerobics class on the other days.
Get Fit Faster
Torch calories with these intervals—no gym required. 1. Run stairs. Head to a local stadium or park with steps. Race up as fast as possible, then jog or walk back down. Repeat. 2. Alternate weights and cardio. Lift free weights in reps of 10, followed by a quick burst of cardiovascular activity, such as running in place for a minute. 3. Jump rope. Switch between three minutes of light hopping and one minute of high-intensity jumping.
TKM17WIN_FASH&BTY_Health_Fitness.L [P].indd 138
1 MONTH
Since you’re getting busier with planning as the wedding approaches, relax your rigorous workout schedule. Make simple swaps in your daily activities that aid your fitness goals but don’t take a lot of time out of your day—you’ll need those precious minutes for organizing seating charts and welcome bags. These changes can be as straightforward as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. If you’re at the gym, consider swapping a high-intensity spin class for yoga—you’ll still burn calories, and you’ll be supporting your mind and body by releasing stress and anxiety, which can both definitely escalate in the final weeks.
1 WEEK
Combat wedding day jitters and the pressure of final to-dos by continuing to move. “I’m a big believer in exercising the week of,” Browning says, suggesting two to three workouts before the festivities begin. “Instead of long cardio sessions, walk to the gym, do a quick session focused on interval training and get in a good stretch.” You’ll raise your heart rate without an imposing time commitment that can deter you from last-minute errands. A quick morning-of yoga practice or casual stroll with your bridesmaids will put you in the right mind-set for your walk down the aisle.

6 MONTHS
MAYBE ONE DAY YOU CAN’T FIT EVERYTHING IN. THAT’S OKAY! THAT’S THE DAY YOU’LL WALK EVERYWHERE. IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD IF YOU DON’T MAKE IT TO THE GYM.

BIG QUESTION
Here’s Looking at You CONTEMPLATING A FIRST LOOK? TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS WEIGH IN ON SEEING EACH OTHER PRECEREMONY OR SAVING THAT MOMENT FOR THE ALTAR.
vs Catch a Sneak Peek
Await an Aisle Reveal Delaying that first moment together builds suspense, adds emotion to your ceremony and gives a nod to tradition. “Plenty of couples forgo a first look,” says Jana Williams, owner of Jana Williams Photography in California. “Just make sure there’s enough time after ‘I do’ to take portraits.” Work with your photographer to perfect your postceremony timeline. That may mean you need to skip out on some of your cocktail hour to score shots during golden hour or sneak in family portraits.
154
K
If you’re an especially private or emotional person, a glimpse before walking down the aisle may be the way to go. “I always suggest a first look—it eases nerves, allows couples to focus during the ceremony and is a great way to capture an intimate moment,” says Judy Pak, owner of Judy Pak Studio in New York City. Pair your first look with couple portraits to translate that romantic feeling in photos and free up more time to enjoy cocktail hour with guests.
T & S PHOTOGRAPHY
TIP
For an extra wow-worthy moment, do your first look sans veil, then pin it on before your ceremony as a sweet surprise for your partner.

@simplyjessicamarie
How can to-be-weds ensure they choose a design that best suits them? Brides and grooms should strive to visually portray their love story through every inch of the stationery. Instead of having my couples turn to Pinterest to compile their inspiration, I send them a questionnaire asking all about their favorite date-night activities, their personal style, their home décor and what they’re most looking forward to on their wedding day and in their marriage. The stories they share with me about their everyday lives together are the perfect jumping-off point for creative ideas that are unique to them. The insight also allows me to dream up other details to work into their wedding paper, like a fill-in-the-blank cocktail recipe on the back of a response card so a host-loving pair has a box full of ideas to try when throwing their next soiree. I encourage my couples to approach the creative process from that personalized mind-set.
What detail do you love creating most for your clients? My favorite detail has to be painting a signature custom crest for a couple. Every one I’m tasked with making turns out differently. I include a lot of little illustrations to tell their story and add personality, like a set of golf clubs to represent a groom’s favorite leisure activity or a watercolor painting of the sweet puppy they recently adopted together. Every combination I create for the crest is unique to each couple, and I love that. To-be-weds can use their crest in their invitation suite and throughout their wedding day, like printed on an aisle runner or lounge area pillows. After their “I dos,” newlyweds typically transition the crest into a family heirloom and display it in their homes, which is a thoughtful way to commemorate their wedding day for generations to come. Where do you get inspiration from—anywhere unexpected? While I draw most of my artistic ideas from my couples’ love stories and personalities, I have fun pulling inspiration from other out-of-the-box places as well. Instead of searching within the stationery and calligraphy industries, I like to look outward to home décor brands as well as clothing stores. One of my favorite “creative breaks” involves walking around an Anthropologie and browsing its beautiful items and displays—I always leave full of new pattern or color ideas. In a similar vein, I also look to a bride’s gown or veil, or a couple’s table linens or wedding china patterns, to inform my designs and coordinate their paper goods and accents with other day-of details.
PERRY VAILE PHOTOGRAPHY; PEDDICORD: CALLIE LINDSEY
OUR PRO Jessica Peddicord is a watercolor artist, brush calligrapher and custom wedding stationer based in Dallas.
The thing I’m loving most this year has to be couples requesting custom stationery moments, especially in different mediums. While I’ll always adore printing and calligraphing on paper, it’s been so fun to try my hand at designing on other surfaces like fabric, wood, acrylic and silk ribbon. I created the paper goods and details for my own wedding in 2016 (pictured at right) and even calligraphed a sweet quote on the silk ribbon of the bridesmaid bouquets. I loved the texture and pop of color it provided so much that I offer it in my shop and as a service to my couples.

Plan Your Wedding on Your Phone
THE KNOT WEDDING PLANNER APP IS THE ONLY APP THAT PULLS TOGETHER YOUR VISION, VENDORS AND GUESTS— AND PUTS PLANNING IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND. ILLUSTRATION BY KAROLIN SCHNOOR
FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE
The first thing you’ll do in our new app is take our imagebased style quiz to help zero in on your wedding vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own “wedding vision” that you can easily share with pros with one click. This way, everyone knows exactly what you mean when you say “rustic chic.”
KEEP ORGANIZED
You’ll find all of your to-dos, and when to do them, in the app’s checklist. Best of all, it’s customizable. If you’re not hiring an officiant because your uncle is doing the honors, that to-do disappears off your list. Worried about staying on budget? We’ve got you covered there too. The app’s budgeter tool tells you how much to spend on individual tasks, as well as tracks your overall spending.
COMPILE YOUR DREAM TEAM
We’ll take the info you share with the app and provide personalized vendor suggestions based on your location, style and budget. You can also browse thousands of award-winning pros on your own via The Knot Marketplace.
THINK OF YOUR GUESTS
Give guests all the info they need, like hotel details and registry links, in one pretty package with the app’s wedding website feature. We’ll guide you every step of the way to make the most helpful wedding website with tips and reminders as the date approaches. Sync it with your phone contacts (to save time address hunting) then stay on top of guests who haven’t RSVP’d.

MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY
Keep an eye on your registries from the app. After all, your wedding day isn’t the only time you’ll receive gifts (there’s the engagement party and shower too), so make it easy on your guests and keep your registries full of options. Have everything you need? Check out The Knot Newlywed Fund, which lets you ask for cash gifts for things like a down payment on a home.
Another way to use your phone? To find inspiration. Follow our fave wedding pros to fill your feed with pretty snaps.
@JOVEMEYER Looking to create a fun-filled day? You’ll get a ton of ideas from planner Jove Meyer’s playful, bright details.
@LHCALLIGRAPHY Follow stationer and calligrapher Laura Hooper to see gorgeous script and innovative ways to use hand-lettering in your wedding paper.

There’s a good chance some of your guests will be traveling to celebrate with you. Snag a great deal on a room block with Hotel Planner— it’s free and easy to use. Simply put in your location and dates and you’ll be assigned a representative to help you get the best deals. They’ll even assist you in the reservation process and set up a booking site just for your guests, which you can then add to your wedding website from the app.
@MADISONLEESCAKES GET YOUR DAY-OF TIMELINE
As you check off your to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app is creating a day-of timeline behind the scenes to help you ensure everything goes off without a hitch. Share the super-detailed schedule of events, arrival and set-up times, and more with all of your pros, plus your wedding party and parents. This way, everyone will be on the same page—so you can just focus on your walk down the aisle and making this day your best day ever.

CEREMONY Donning a cathedrallength veil, Sarah walked down the aisle to an acoustic rendition of “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)” by Alicia Keys. Framed by a floral-accented loggia, she and Kieran exchanged rings engraved with their wedding date. COCKTAILS After the ceremony, guests traveled by boat to Villa Giuseppina for an aperitivo (drinks and light bites) on the terrace. FLORALS A mix of green and white blooms, including scabiosa, magical noblesse hydrangea, delphinium and loose eucalyptus, underscored the refinement of the historic property.

rrival by boat, sips of Aperol spritz, waterfront vistas and ivy-covered loggia set the scene for Sarah Swan (28 and a clinical psychologist) and Kieran McCullough’s (30 and a commodities broker) romantic nuptials along the shores of Italy’s Lake Como. “Seeing beautiful villas appear as you round the corner on the water is such a sight,” Sarah says of first visiting the area and the venues. “We saw the huge arches framing a mind-blowing view, and we could just imagine standing there with all our family and friends.” The pair’s celebration highlighted traditional food and drink from the region, including risotto and prosecco, while also showcasing personal touches, like the newlyweds’ first dance to Usher’s “Superstar.” —Stephanie Cain

MEMORY “We had a moment—just us— looking out onto the lake, soaking up what we had experienced so far,” Sarah says.
ATTIRE “Wearing a dress by an Italian designer was the ultimate fit for our Italian wedding,” Sarah says of her lace, mermaid-style gown. Kieran headed to a tailor to get a custom-made, slim-fit suit. RECEPTION To echo the villa’s gardens, treelike structures—dotted with hanging cupolas—stood on long feasting tables. White pillar candles added a romantic atmosphere to the tablescape. MONOGRAM The couple’s monogram, designed by a friend, accented their letterpress invitations and the embroidered handkerchiefs they gifted the wedding party.

fter attending a friend’s nuptials in Palm Springs, California, Jack Taormina (34 and a manager of an interior design boutique) and Jeff Lawley (32 and a lead recruiter at Google) fell in love with the idea of a desert wedding amid the mid-century architecture of the SoCal oasis. “We had the opportunity to host everyone in one location,” Jack says of exchanging vows away from their Bay Area home. Inspired by their venue’s history as an old-Hollywood getaway, the pair added glam details like Greek-key-printed linens, patterned paper goods and succulent-hued macarons. But the standout moment came when their planner unveiled the surprise checkered dance floor at the reception— and the get-down commenced. —SC

Embrace Parisian architecture. You don’t have to spend extra to create a beautiful space. Use ornate ballrooms as your backdrops and snap photos on street corners. Serve French food. Design a menu with a native chef, like Jisun and Pieter did, and offer local provisions like macarons and cheese. Book vendors early. High-end pros can be in short supply. Plan photo shoots meticulously. For photos with famed landmarks, organize a driver for transportation and call ahead. Some locations require pre-approval for pro shots.

For Wizards of Waverly Place actor David Henrie, his initial encounter with former Miss Delaware Maria Cahill was nothing short of magical.
TKM17WIN_07_Celeb_Wedding.L [P].indd 227
The two first connected at an event in Los Angeles, when David, 27, offered up his sweater to a chilly Maria, 26, who was only in town for 24 hours. “I flew back to New York City, not giving him a second thought,” Maria admits. A day later, she received a text message from David, who asked a mutual friend for her number. “The rest is history,” Maria says. Two years passed before David popped the question using a custom, oval-shaped diamond ring that resembled a bauble found on Maria’s private Pinterest board. “I was ready to marry Maria from the moment I proposed,” he says of keeping their engagement to a short six months. During that time, the couple collaborated with David’s mother on
a sophisticated design scheme reminiscent of old-Hollywood glamour. “Our wedding had to represent who we are and our love of tradition, family and friends,” Maria says. “David’s mom went above and beyond anything I could have imagined—she nailed it.” The couple exchanged vows on April 21, opting for a traditional Catholic wedding at a church in Wilmington, California. Guests were asked to stash away their phones prior to the start of the ceremony, in which Maria wed David in an A-line Enzoani gown that featured beaded alençon and Chantilly lace and a scalloped hem. The regal look was finished with a long-sleeve topper and lace-trimmed veil, which measured a lengthy five yards. “I saw the shadow of her dress

underneath the church door, and I just lost it,” David says of the emotional moment before Maria’s grand processional. “When I looked back up and saw her for the first time, I lost it again.” The newlyweds exited the ceremony in the back of a vintage 1962 Rolls-Royce before celebrating with 170 guests in nearby Rancho Palos Verdes. Glam lavender and gold details set the scene for their SoCal reception overlooking the Pacific Ocean. “We wanted to make our guests feel like they had stepped right into a Cary Grant movie,” Maria says of dressing up dining tables with candelabras and

a textured mix of lace and velvet linens. A sevenpiece band played into the evening, and the couple swayed to Michael Bublé’s “Hold On” for their first dance, before Maria and all six of her siblings performed a traditional Irish jig on the dance floor. “It was a fun moment to get together and do what we all loved to do as kids,” she says. The occasion also doubled as a Wizards of Waverly Place reunion for the Disney alum, whose former costars, including Selena Gomez and Jake T. Austin, joined in on the festivities. “All of my closest friends and family were there,” David says. “It was a very joy-filled room, and we were all celebrating something that should be celebrated.”
IN THE GROOM’S WORDS On designing Maria’s dream ring: “Maria’s sister knew about her Pinterest page, so I did some detective work. I sent a photo of the ring to a friend and had him make the exact one for her.”
On their short engagement: “It was less about the planning and more about wanting to live with her and start my life with her. We wanted to get married as soon as possible.”
On the wedding moments he’ll never forget:

On the advice he’d give to an engaged friend: “Don’t forget that your wedding is all about two becoming one, and nothing else. The second you forget that, nerves set in, things get difficult and you’re trying to please other people.”

Mix it up with a center stone that rests horizontally across your finger. $2,480 (not including center stone), AJaffe.com 8. ROSE-CUT DIAMONDS
This time-honored cut dates back to the 1500s and gives off instant vintage vibes. $3,925, RoseyWest.com 9. HEXAGONAL HALOS
Add a boost to your center stone with a modern twist on a trendy setting. $6,700 (not including center stone), SayYesWithKarl.com Shoes, $750, Jimmy Choo, KleinfeldBridal.com
CLARITY The clarity of a diamond is graded on how free it is of inclusions (or imperfections) when viewed with the naked eye and with a loupe (a 10x magnifying glass). The fewer inclusions a stone has, the more valuable it is. CARAT This is a unit of weight. One carat is exactly 0.2 grams, or about the same weight as a paper clip. COLOR This refers to the colorless to near-colorless variety of diamonds. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades color based on a range from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow and brown). A colorless diamond will generally cost more than a colorful one.
A GUIDE TO METALS A rundown of the most popular ring metals. PLATINUM One of the purest metals, platinum is naturally white and hypoallergenic.
231
If diamonds aren’t your thing, a dazzling colorful gemstone like this sapphire will set you apart from the crowd. $36,000, OmiPrive.com
You don’t need a giant rock to make a statement. Lots of dainty diamonds feel just as special. $2,250, SelinKent.com
CUT A diamond’s cut determines its brilliance and refers to the facets within a stone. Don’t confuse this with a diamond’s shape.

THE 4 Cs Brush up on diamond grading before you buy.
YELLOW GOLD Naturally yellow-tinted, this metal is malleable but strong. WHITE GOLD This white metal is yellow gold plated with rhodium. It’s less pricey than platinum, but its white coating can wear off. ROSE GOLD A mix of yellow gold and copper alloys gives this metal its pretty pink tint. PALLADIUM Similar to platinum but less costly, this lustrous gray metal can also be an alloy in white gold.

SPECIAL THANKS TO
THE HOLLYWOOD ROOSEVELT
Looking for a chic locale for your nuptials? Consider the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, located off the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This landmark destination hosted the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929 (in the Blossom Ballroom—available for weddings) and dozens of icons over the decades, including Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Prince and Angelina Jolie. The eclectic property features a variety of wedding-worthy spaces designed to evoke the feel of Hollywood's Golden Age and the sophistication of the California coast. Host guests in The Academy Room, formerly the offices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and treat them to views of Hollywood Boulevard from its floor-to-ceiling windows. Want to celebrate under the stars? Say your "I dos" on the striking rooftop (pictured above). For more information about its spaces and accommodations, visit TheHollywoodRoosevelt.com. gown silhouette styles trumpet gown
mermaid gown
The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.
The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.
This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.
a-line gown
ball gown

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.
The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.
This slim, form-fitting silhouette hugs the body from head-to-toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

wedding party 101 The least you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.
bridesmaids • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the bridesmaid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the bridesmaid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your bridesmaids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the bridesmaids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your girls. Email works great for this.
sweetheart neckline
scoop neckline
one-shoulder neckline
groom & groomsmen • Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar.
314
• The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel
notched lapel
• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. peaked lapel
flower girls & ring bearers • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.
TKM17WIN LOOKBOOK 03 (304-329).indd 314
• Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, the suit will pay for itself.

The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 3
4 Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse dutyfree bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.
7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. 2 The water is so clear in the Bahamas that divers experience visibility of up to 200 feet.
Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6

BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.
The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.
2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.
7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

2 Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds.
Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3
Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.
6 To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay. 8 While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.
Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves your man’s never seen before! 10

2 Unlike its bustling neighbor Cancún, Cozumel is relatively quiet: Only 3 percent of this 189-square-mile island with clear waters, beautiful reefs and white-sand beaches has been developed. 3 If you like nightlife, discos are popular in Acapulco; they’re open 365 days a year, from 10:30 p.m. until 4 or 5 a.m. 4 The “Corridor” near Los Cabos is a gorgeous string of cozy hotels, championship golf courses, winding horse trails and white-sand beaches. 5 Big ocean-side resorts in Cancún are a good home base for exploring ancient Mayan ruins. The seaside Mayan city of Tulum is closest. Good day trips include Coba and Chichen Itza.
6 Most of the Yucatán peninsula is great for water sports like snorkeling and scuba diving. For underwater sightseers, check out El Chileno, an underwater preserve, or Bahia Santa Maria, a cove surrounded by cliffs, near Los Cabos. 7 People fall in love with Playa del Carmen equally for what it has (gorgeous beaches and rustic charm) and for what it doesn’t (the crowds and overbuilt beachfronts of some big tourist spots). 8 Located at the edge of the Sierra Madre range, Puerto Vallarta is full of old cobblestone streets and plenty of Mexican tradition (think: fiestas!). 9 San José del Cabo is an old Mexican village built around the Colonial-style church Iglesia San José and a charming town square. 10 The Riviera Maya parallels the Caribbean coast. It starts in Playa del Carmen and ends in Tulum.

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago. 2 Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.
6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.
If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.
9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.
5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.
10 If you or your groom loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

HONEYMOON HIGHLIGHT The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, topped the list of memorable moments for the pair, who enjoyed performances by Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini and Old Crow Medicine Show. “We hit the jackpot with that lineup,” Aubyn says. “The experience was better than we ever expected.” MEMORABLE MEALS Blood orange mimosas at The Southern Steak & Oyster in Nashville come highly recommended, as does dinner at Charleston’s Husk Restaurant and locally sourced comfort fare from The Public Kitchen & Bar in Savannah. —Rachel Sylvester

REAL HONEYMOONS
Vicki & Nitant
Japan THE PLAN In search of an immersive escape totally out of their comfort zone, anime-obsessed pair Vicki and Nitant traveled across Japan for nearly a month of sightseeing.
Senso-ji Temple
MEMORABLE MEAL The couple splurged during dinner at Sushi Kanesaka—a Michelin-starred restaurant in the heart of Tokyo. TRAVEL TIP Book restaurant reservations well in advance, and consider what you pack. “Japanese culture is more modest,” Vicki says. “Pack clothing that isn’t revealing.” STANDOUT STAY “We had our own private hot spring tub at Gora Hanaougi,” Vicki says of their resort in tranquil Hakone, where they were surrounded by breathtaking views of nearby Mt. Fuji. “You’re treated so well, and the stay is so worth the splurge.” MUST-SEE SIGHTS Beyond mastering the Japanese subway system and taking a traditional samurai sword course at Samurai Kembu Theater in Kyoto, the pair visited Ghibli Museum and had an illustrator draw their composite at Kyoto International Manga Museum. “You can spend an entire day getting lost in all of the anime that’s available there,” Vicki says.

Bevin & Matt
Bali Mount Batur volcano
THE PLAN New York–based newlyweds Bevin and Matt utilized a slew of credit card points to plan their two-week excursion that spanned three picturesque towns on the Indonesian island of Bali. MUST-SEE SIGHTS The pair took in the sunset from Seminyak’s Potato Head Beach Club and biked through the Balinese village of Batur and its paddy fields with Dana Bali Tour. MEMORABLE MOMENT The couple woke up at 2 a.m. for an unforgettable sunrise hike on Mount Batur—an active volcano that took nearly two hours to climb. “We hiked up the mountain in the middle of the night with flashlights,” Bevin says. “When we got to the top, tour guides had breakfast ready, and we fed the wild monkeys around us that were just waking up for the day.” STANDOUT STAY Bali’s COMO Uma Ubud hotel served as a tranquil retreat for Bevin and Matt, who spent five days relaxing poolside with local treats like black rice pudding and muesli. “The resort was seriously magical,” Bevin says. “The private villas were beautiful, and the pool looked like something out of a magazine.”

PACKING ESSENTIALS Preloaded Google Maps came in handy while exploring sans cell reception. “Even with a tour guide, it was useful to have offline maps of the area on our phone,” Bevin says.

TRAVEL TIP “Hire a driver,” Bevin says. “It’s affordable and so worth it to have someone who’s familiar with the area.” —RS
