remember learning about recycling in the first grade and immediately requesting (okay, maybe demanding) we become a household that prioritized recycling. As an adult, I’ve worked to make other small swaps in my day-to-day life, like ditching plastic water bottles for a Yeti, bringing my own tote bags to the grocery store and opting for more vegetarian meals. Admittedly, it’s not groundbreaking stuff, but little changes that feel doable and hopefully add up over time. It’s this concept that I encourage us all to consider—yes, even as we plan weddings. Weddings are beautiful, but like a lot of things in our life, they can be unintentionally wasteful. Let’s change that! I hope you find usable eco-friendly ideas, tips and tricks throughout this issue to do just that.

First of all, know you’re not alone. Most of my clients are looking for that exact balance. They want designs that thoughtfully evoke love, freedom, fun and celebration. They also want to party alongside loved ones, since the pandemic has forced everyone to truly appreciate the time we have on earth. I’ll just say it: Here come the roaring 2020s! But it’s still possible to prioritize sustainability at an all-out wedding. I’d advise you to focus on your rentals. Believe it or not, you can rent everything from plants and lanterns to cake platters, frames and even cocktail napkins to cut down on how many new items you purchase for the event. If you can’t find these items at a local party-rental company, try looking for specialty rental shops in your area. Also, ask your rental vendor to deliver items in less plastic, if possible, to reduce the amount of waste produced. When in doubt, source items locally to help reduce your wedding’s carbon footprint. And don’t do it alone: Ask your wedding planner for help every step of the way.

I can’t overstate my love of small bites— mini-sized food can pack a big punch. I’ve loved seeing how couples have taken smaller hors d’oeuvres to new heights, especially the miniature grazing boards. When I first noticed this trend on Instagram, it not only gave me a major cheese craving (though, frankly, that’s how I live my life!), but it seemed like an artistic innovation. The use of charcuterie cups and grazing boards felt so fresh. The small bites trend is not just a feast for the eyes and the mouth, but also an Insta-worthy photo op. But no matter what ideas are hot right now, it’s crucial to remind yourself that it’s your day. Make it your own, always.

or wedding planners, there’s often extra pressure when it comes to dreaming up their own day. Californiabased event pro Alessandra Tacconelli (23) met the task head-on. Not only did she plan a creative event to celebrate her marriage to professional baseball player John Brontsema (25), but she also prioritized sustainability in her floral decor. She shares expert tips for making your wedding design as green as possible. If making your entire event sustainable feels too overwhelming, consider finding one area to focus on, like Alessandra did. Even small changes will make a meaningful difference.

Planning my wedding was both rewarding and eye-opening. I’ve done many couples’ weddings, but designing my own showed me another side of the process and I can now relate to my clients on a new level. John and I met in high school in Santa Barbara, but we’ve traveled all over for his career, from Arizona and Arkansas to Delaware and New York. When we tied the knot in San Juan Capistrano, California, the lyric “home is wherever I’m with you”—from “Home,” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros—inspired us. For the design, I looked to my 2019 travels Down Under and let an Australian aesthetic inform the event—a look that lent itself to prioritizing sustainability in our wedding decor.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE Like anything, when planning a wedding, balance is key. Even if you just pick one or two things to focus on, you can take steps to be more eco-conscious while staying

true to your design. If sustainability is really important to you, voice that to your wedding planner so they can help brainstorm ways to achieve your dream aesthetic in a greener way.

COMPLEMENT EXISTING DECOR Since hedges surrounded our venue, I opted to forgo any greenery in the arrangements we brought in. Instead, I filled our wedding with neutral-hued dried textures, all of which popped against the hedges. Leaning into existing decor can help minimize single-use items.

CONSIDER DRIED ELEMENTS Using dried elements is an easy way to be eco-conscious. We incorporated dried botanicals sourced and reused from previous events my floral designer and I had worked on together. Notably, the hanging arrangement above the head table was first used at my bridal shower and then repurposed at the wedding. ife is starting to pick back up again, and Jenna Dewan is here for it. The actress, dancer, author and former model is emerging from quarantine with excitement—and for good reason. She welcomed her second child in March of 2020, just as the world began to shut down. The timing meant she had a full year to hunker down at home with her new baby and her new fiancé, Broadway star Steve Kazee. After a postpartum pause, she’s ready to get back on screen and back down the aisle again too. I chatted with the Come Dance With Me judge about finding love again, her connection with Mother Earth and her plans for throwing a sustainable wedding.

L AU REN K AY: It’s safe to say 2020 was a chaotic year to say the least—but also a good one for you! You got engaged and welcomed your son, Callum Kazee. Congratulations! Can you take us back in time to the very beginning of your and Steve’s story? J EN NA DE WAN: Despite everything, there’s been a lot of good stuff going on. And yes, it’s a good story. About nine years ago, I happened to be in New York, so I took my mom to see Once on Broadway. We cried our eyes out and fell in love with the show—in particular, the lead actor, Steve Kazee. We thought he was just so talented. And funnily

COVER STORY enough, my mom had the biggest crush—she couldn’t stop saying, “he’s the cutest, so sensitive, so handsome.” She just kept going on and on. So I said, “let’s wait for him at the stage door so you can say hi.” So we did. We waited for a few minutes, and he appeared. I was pushing her forward to say hi, and Steve and I just had one of those eye-catching moments. It was very quick, but it struck us both. It was a moment. My mom and I told him what a great job he did and how it was such an amazing show, and that was it. We both went off into the night. But I never forgot the moment. Life went on, as it does. Many years later, we were in different situations. I was single again, he was single. He messaged me and said something like, “Hey, I don’t know if you remember me, but how are you?” And I was floored. Of course I remembered him. And that moment in 2012. And it was just kind of fate—it was totally meant to be. LK: So was it love at first sight? J D: It was. I think it was a remembrance at first sight, or that’s kinda what I like to call it. We just both thought, “hmm.” You go through life and you know those moments don’t happen every day. LK: True kismet. What about the proposal, was it a “moment” too?

Y O U F E E L LIKE YOU’RE BETTERING THE WORLD. J D: Oh, yes. I was pregnant with Callum and it was the weekend of my baby shower. My mom was in town and all my close friends were there too. My baby shower for Evie was more traditional, but this time I wanted something different. I like to say I’m a very spiritual-minded person, so I had a blessingway. It’s more like a ceremony and a celebration of motherhood than a baby shower. So everyone sat in a circle and shared words of wisdom and offered a blessing to Callum and to Steve and me, and while we were doing that, we wove this dream catcher together. Everyone brought a crystal or a token to weave into it. When the dream catcher got to Steve, he said, “I have a song,” and got out his guitar. He had written this song and halfway through he sings, “will you marry me?” And everyone gasped. Meanwhile, this had been in the works for months. My daughter, Evie, knew it was happening—I still have no idea how she kept it a secret. She’s only seven! She and Steve had a whole thing and she came running out. We were all in tears. That moment was just really special, and there was a feeling in the air that day. Nothing in my life has been really traditional. Things have happened and there have been a lot of transitions. I like that we’re doing this our own way.

LK: What a special moment. Yet, somehow you forgot to mention that epic sparkler. Tell us about the ring. J D: Oh, yes, the ring is really amazing. One of our good friends is the actress Nikki Reed. She lives a very sustainable life and walks her talk. She started this jewelry line called BaYou with Love, and she designs these incredible engagement rings and wedding bands and all kinds of jewelry. Everything is made from sustainable materials—like they melt down Dell computers and use the gold. She grows these beautiful diamonds in a lab too. Steve had been working with her for months to design the ring. I am just obsessed with it. LK: So Steve knew sustainability was important to you?

J D: Oh, yes, he knew. He knows my connection to sustainability and the planet and living a healthy life. For me, it’s really all about the connection. If we all realized just how connected we are in this life, we could appreciate how our actions truly affect everyone—and that extends to Mother Earth. Sure, it can be difficult at times to try and live sustainably, but it’s also amazing. Like who would have thought a ring like this could be sustainable? And yet it is. It’s gorgeous! And hands down my favorite piece of jewelry. It’s more about the thought, that idea of connections. LK: Can you share more about your desire to live a green life? You’ve adopted a plant-based diet. Is that one of the ways in

which you are trying to live more sustainably? J D: Yes, and it all started when I was 10. My mom always tells the story that I watched a documentary on TV about a slaughterhouse. I was always the kid who was very emotionally attached to animals and never liked eating meat. I cried when I saw roadkill. So that super-sensitive kid watches this documentary and declares, “I will never be eating meat again. From this point forward, I am a vegetarian.” And I really didn’t eat meat in my teenage years and haven’t since. It began with me being aware of the interconnectedness of all of us. I wanted all animals to be fairly treated, and I had such disdain for factory farming. Then it turned toward the environment.

These last few years have really highlighted sustainability for me. I want to live more sustainably and support brands with that ethos. It used to feel like it was always a trade-off, but now there are so many amazing fashion brands and larger companies that carry sustainable items. It’s so much easier to adopt this lifestyle nowadays. LK: You’ve described yourself as a beauty junkie. Tell me a little bit about your journey to clean beauty. J D: When I was pregnant for the first time, I became insistent about using only clean beauty products. I slathered coconut oil, straight out of the jar, all over my body. But because I am a beauty junkie, I like products that actually work. I like to play around, and I discovered a lot of clean beauty brands that were also really effective. Same for clothing brands. It just kind of evolved from there to a place of open-mindedness. Sustainable choices are out there, and they’re really great too. LK: You got engaged, had a baby and then the world shut down. Has this year changed the way you’re thinking about your wedding? J D: It’s so funny, we hadn’t even had a chance to talk much about our wedding. A month after we got engaged, I had Callum and then a week later, quarantine began. We just put everything on pause. But I am a firm believer in staying in the flow of life. I know I will know when it’s right. Same goes for the details of the day. I definitely think in the past few years, there’s been an emphasis on simplicity and on presence. I’m much more about making what’s important really count, which is each other and our family and having a great time celebrating together. It could be a destination wedding, like gathering our families and a few great friends in Palm Springs for the weekend. We have so many ideas still floating around, but they all boil down to this: presence, connection and togetherness. LK: You said earlier that nothing about your life has been very traditional. What about your wedding? Do you think you’ll incorporate any traditions? J D: Oh, Evie would never forgive me if I did not let her be the flower girl. She would never speak to me again—that’s how much it means to her. I will for sure keep the tradition of incorporating Evie and Callum in the wedding. I love the tradition of incorporating my mom and my dad too. Steve’s mom has passed on, and so it’s important to me to incorporate her presence into the ceremony

and honor her in some way. I like the idea of writing our own vows, and we’ll have someone special to us officiate. Overall, I think we will focus on having a spiritual ceremony. And of course, we’ll have some kind of celebration after. LK: Any dream catcher moments planned? J D: I know, it’s a good idea. I know we should do something like that. It wouldn’t be me if there wasn’t a sprinkle of dream catcher somewhere! LK: This is your second marriage. What have you learned along the way about yourself and commitment? J D: I think I’ve become a more grounded and present version of myself. When you’re younger, you don’t put as much thought into everything. You kind of do what you know and what’s been done before. As you get older, you have a little bit more wisdom and more consciousness in everything. It’s not as important to have this lavish celebration, for example. It’s much more important to me to have a meaningful moment that I’ll never forget, surrounded by a small group of people I know and love and who are supportive. I think your circle gets smaller and more meaningful as you get older. And especially after 2020—the pandemic made that especially clear to me. It all comes down to what’s important and who are the connections and relationships you want to foster. It’s also about how you want to feel and connect in life. I want all of that at the forefront of my wedding. LK: And is there anything about your wedding that you’re really focused on keeping sustainable? J D: I think an eco-friendly wedding means having a small, intimate celebration. At this time in my life, I am definitely more drawn to the meaningful gathering rather than the lavish party. I think it would be really beautiful to have a sustainable wedding dress or work with a designer to create something that is sustainable. And I love the idea of recycled invites. There are some incredible ways to work with flowers. I worked with Forage Florals for my blessingway, and the owner was incredible. All the flowers are sourced within a five-mile radius and totally dependent on what’s in season. I would love to find a local, organic, farm-to-table caterer and donate leftovers after the wedding. There are a lot of ways to be sustainable. And you can still have a gorgeous wedding and something you feel good about. You feel like you’re bettering the world.

GREEN ROUTINE Planning your prewedding skin care and makeup is the perfect time to reexamine your habits. Here, professional makeup artist and sustainable beauty expert Jessa Blades shares eight ways to reduce your carbon footprint—beautifully.

PAY ATTENTION TO PACKAGING

STREAMLINE YOUR PRODUCTS

“Glass is easier to recycle, so opt for glass bottles over plastic ones when you can,” Blades says. Here’s the skinny on glass vs. plastic packaging: While glass is made of natural materials and maintains its quality when recycled, plastic is petroleum-based and breaks down over time. This negatively impacts the environment because every time plastic is recycled, it’s repurposed into something of different and lesser quality (aka downcycled). Eventually, plastic containers can’t be recycled anymore and end up in a landfill.

Lay out all of your cosmetics and skin care products and take note of what you use most—it should be pretty obvious. Then, commit to only replenishing those products when they run out, rather than splurging on whatever catches your eye online or at the mall. “We have to switch off that desire to always amass more,” Blades says. “More is not necessarily better. Most people only need a few products, and part of being more sustainable is consuming less in general and cutting back where we can.”

DIY WHEN POSSIBLE “I love the idea of turning to your own pantry and using ingredients you already own, like organic olive and coconut oils, instead of buying new products,” Blades says. She recommends slathering yourself in these oils (preferably the kinds that come in glass bottles) before showering in lieu of using traditional body moisturizer. “You can also make lots of body scrubs and face masks with things in your kitchen,” she says. The logic here is simple: The more you use the stuff you already own, the less waste you create by purchasing new products in new packaging.

Customizable palettes and multisticks are trending, but these versatile products also have a sustainable aspect, according to Blades. “Most people don’t finish their products,” she says. “If you never finish your lipsticks or blush, consider buying a multistick that can do both.” And if you find yourself buying numerous makeup palettes because you can’t find just one that works for you, go the custom route. “Companies like MAC make magnetic palettes, where you can only buy the colors you’ll actually wear, which leads to less waste,” she says.

INVEST IN GOOD TOOLS Rather than springing for the latest makeup sponge or applicator (which will likely have to be replaced often) or relying heavily on single-use products like Q-tips and cotton balls, Blades suggests purchasing high-quality makeup brushes and reusable cotton rounds that will last. “If you care for your makeup brushes by washing, conditioning and drying them every two weeks or so, you can forgo the Q-tips and sponges,” she says. “Those things might speed up your routine a little bit, but all you really need are good brushes, reusable cotton rounds and your fingertips.”

DO YOUR RESEARCH “Green” and “clean” may be the beauty buzzwords of the moment, but that doesn’t always tell the full story of a brand’s environmental impact. “Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions,” Blades says. “For example, you should feel comfortable asking how an ingredient is harvested, if it’s endangered and what the conditions are like for the workers harvesting it.” If a brand is truly sustainable and ethical, sharing more about its business practices shouldn’t be an issue.

If sustainability is one of the key values of your wedding, make sure your day-of glam squad is on board. Request sustainable products and clearly communicate any additional asks (think: you’d prefer to forgo any single-use tools) at your trial. “Makeup artists are usually using a kit, which is much more sustainable than buying new products and throwing them away, but you should also feel free to bring your own products,” Blades says. “Your pros should be able to work with your stuff too and accommodate your requests.”

THINK BEYOND YOUR WEDDING On the other hand, if you have your heart set on using long-wear products on your day that aren’t necessarily clean or green—don’t sweat it. The environmental benefits of creating a more sustainable beauty regimen come from adopting good habits that add up over time. “Using a waterproof mascara or long-lasting foundation for one day isn’t the end of the world,” Blades says. “It’s the other 364 days of the year you should be thinking about. That’s what really counts.”

Check with your local recycling company—many offer their own programs for mattresses and box springs and can help coordinate a pickup.

Tricks for More Sustainable Stems Floral waste is one of the biggies when it comes to weddings. Here’s how to partner up with the right pros and make green swaps, so your flowers don’t just look good, but do good.

3 S K I P T H E F LO R A L FOA M Floral foam isn’t recyclable or biodegradable and contains toxic chemicals that are harmful to both the florist and the environment. You can create artful arrangements with the use of a metal floral frog, a reusable prong-like insert that holds stems in place, or chicken wire. Be sure that you and your florist are aligned on this swap.

4 D O N ’ T B U Y, R E N T Instead of purchasing vases, candelabras and other decorative items, ask your florist to borrow them instead. “We keep a diverse inventory of vessels and rent those to our clients, thus avoiding waste, especially from paper and plastic packaging when ordering new,” says Culver. This ensures those vintage milk-glass vases can delight at a future celebration too.

As with every vendor choice, do your homework. Most florists are well-versed and passionate about sustainable practices, but it’s important to partner with someone who shares your vision. “You invest in vendors, and therefore their vendors’ practices around sourcing, waste, labor and social justice,” says Molly Culver, owner of Molly Oliver Flowers in Brooklyn, New York. Inquire about their values and ethical practices, and make your priorities known, she adds. “Speaking up to your florist about the importance of sourcing organically grown flowers sends the message to local farmers that consumers will pay a premium for flowers grown without chemicals that could harm laborers and the environment.”

If you’re looking for peonies in say, February, they’re being shipped halfway across the world to adorn your aisle—read: not very Earth-friendly. Choosing locally grown flowers means you’ll have the freshest product available and one that travels the shortest distance. Culver sources all of her florals from a 200-mile radius, supporting local farms. “While there are now Fair Trade certifiers that can help florists consciously select foreign products, it’s harder to have a relationship with the grower and know what their labor and diseasemanagement practices look like on the ground,” says Culver.

9 GIVE THEM A SECOND LIFE There will be waste, but any effort to minimize it counts. If your centerpieces are still perky after the last dance, send them out into the world. Coordinate with your florist or planner to donate stems to a local hospital or senior living community where they are sure to bring joy (many of these establishments keep vases on hand for this very thing).

If your florist is eco-minded, they’ll be opting for minimal packaging whenever possible. Let them know you’d prefer to use little plastic when wrapping bouquets for delivery, opting for recyclable paper instead. Same goes for plastic transport vases—most florists will be happy to swap in a sustainable glass option.

6 USE DRIED B O TA N I C A L S Dried flowers are having a moment— and we’re here for it. “More and more couples are aware of the full cost of having fresh florals for just one day and have found more sustainable efforts to achieve a beautiful atmosphere,” says Alex Bates, creative director and cofounder of online shop Bloomist. Dried branches and blooms have a lot of reuse potential, from the shower to the wedding day and beyond. They look beautiful on their own and play well with fresh florals. Complementary colors work best and give off an epic textured vibe in arrangements.

7 REPURPOSE LIKE YO U M E A N I T Strategize with your florist to make the most of your wedding arrangements— from start to finish. A ceremony backdrop can later flank a sweetheart table, while aisle arrangements can be reimagined on cocktail tables. Consider saving a few centerpieces to be redistributed at the morning-after brunch too.

Blooms past their prime can still do good. Many florists will compost branches and florals post-event. Garbage Goddess, a New York–based eco-cleanup service, offers a full breakdown service, composting all organic matter and recycling materials. “We keep the organic matter out of landfills, where they emit eroding greenhouse gasses,” says Liza Lubell, founder of Garbage Goddess. “When florals are composted, it greatly reduces methane levels and new plants and flowers can grow out of the old ones.” Lubell also works with a local network of artists who extract dyes from the flowers, creating new works of art from them. Thoughtful cleanup reduces landfill pileup.

8 OPT FOR POTTED PLANTS Swapping fresh-cut flowers for live plants is an eco-conscious option that’s gaining steam. Use potted topiaries or bushes to line an outdoor aisle, or cluster a few vessels together to create a centerpiece with a garden-like appeal. The plants can be replanted after your “I dos” or doled out to guests after the reception.

BLENDING BACKGROUNDS “Since we’re a mixed-race couple, we wanted to honor Danica’s formal Filipino traditions while paying homage to Colin’s more casual, secular family,” explains the duo. One of the Filipino rituals included in the ceremony was “an exchange of coins, known as the arras, to symbolize wealth and prosperity.” GREEN GIFTS Guests departed the wedding with thoughtful and sustainable favors. The couple ordered cookies from a company that upcycles spent grain from breweries into flour for baking. Then they encased the treats in reusable beeswax wrappers. ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY A friend of the couple made a wood ring box for the nuptials and some candle holders, while Colin’s mom made all of the centerpieces.

uch of Danica Jayme (29 and an occupational therapist) and Colin Mayer’s (31 and a teacher) relationship blossomed over “hiking, skiing and exploring the ocean and mountains of British Columbia.” So it was only fitting that their wedding north of Vancouver, among the foothills of the sweeping peaks of Canada’s Pacific coast, embody an “ocean-meets-mountain” aesthetic with a blue-and-green color palette. In an effort to make their wedding more sustainable, “it was important to us that we supported as many local companies and vendors as we could,” says Danica. One British Columbia–based company the couple supported through their wedding fashion was sustainable footwear brand Casca. Colin and his groomsmen donned Casca’s dusty blue kicks to complement their navy suits.

We focused on tangible and inclusive sustainable actions that still allowed us to feel like the wedding was ours. Throughout the process, we learned that simplicity is key for a sustainable wedding. -Danica

FLOWERS While bougainvillea was the wedding’s focal bloom, the designs also used celosia, dahlias, zinnias, cacti and dried sago palms. Fresh papayas and mangoes added a tropical touch. FAMILY FIRST Family was central to the couple’s ceremony. Eileen was escorted down the aisle by “the most important women in my life”: her mother, sister and nine-month-old niece. Chris walked his mom down the aisle. Since both Eileen and Chris’s dads passed away when they were 13, the duo honored their late fathers during the ceremony. WELCOME BAGS Upon arrival, guests received baskets filled with Mexican-inspired amenities: “a Turkish towel, Modelo Especial, limes, a cactus bottle opener and a bag of the best, in our opinion, tortilla chips.”

f you’ve ever doubted that texture is key to great design, look no further than Eileen Lacey (36 and a wedding planner) and Chris Murphy’s (35 and a national account manager) wedding. Prickly pear cacti, feathery bougainvillea, rugged leather and bohemian rattan: Everywhere guests looked during the couple’s big day, they were greeted by layer upon layer of eye-catching texture. Eileen and Chris initially planned to tie the knot in Mexico, but when the pandemic forced them to keep the event close to home, they decided to bring a vibrant Mexican aesthetic to their coastal California nuptials. The key to achieving this vision? “Lots of color and tons of bougainvillea everywhere!” says Eileen. “We wanted the design elements to feel like they just as easily could’ve been from Mexico.” — H N

SECOND LIFE “We donated all of the locally sourced flowers and fruit on the tables and bar after the wedding,” says Eileen of the eco-conscious approach the couple took with their botanicals. TEQUILA TRIO In keeping with the Mexican inspiration, Eileen and Chris offered three tequila cocktails: a spicy marg with jalapeno and Tajín; a Paloma with grapefruit juice; and a floral marg with hibiscus, Cointreau and a pink Himalayan salt rim. To avoid single-use plastic straws, the duo served drinks with edible tamarind straws. LET’S EAT “Mexican food was a must!” says Eileen. “At cocktail hour, we served a trio of mini tacos. Dinner included enchiladas, chile relleno and grilled vegetables. We also had churros with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces for dessert.”

“Sustainability was really important to us and we tried to minimize waste as much as possible,” says Eileen. In particular, the couple focused on making their food service eco-conscious. Beyond bamboo dishware at cocktail hour, Eileen and Chris “purchased the dinner napkins instead of renting and gifted them to our guests after the wedding.”

PRESERVATION “Telluride is such a special place to us, and we wanted to preserve the natural beauty of it as much as possible through the planning process,” says Tane. Inside their dinner tent, the couple chose to forgo flooring the entire space so the grass underfoot wouldn’t be harmed. But that didn’t stop them from making the tent shine. “The wow factor was the fall foliage adorning each tent pole, and the bamboo chandeliers lighting up the space.” FORAGED FLOWERS The couple’s floral designer “foraged the area to infuse foliage that came directly from the landscape we were getting married in,” says Tane. CLASSIC CAKE The couple saved the top tier of their white-chocolate, praline-crunch wedding cake so they could enjoy the dessert down the road.

here’s a reason so many songs wax poetic about escaping to the mountains to relax. That calming feeling of being surrounded by rustling foliage and rugged peaks is exactly why Tane Harvey (26 and works in merchandising) and Matthew (Matt) McDonald (26 and an estate services specialist) returned to the Colorado Rockies, the location of their engagement, to tie the knot. During a prior visit to Telluride, the couple “fell in love with the open space and the absolutely stunning views.” They celebrated the locale at every step of the wedding, starting with a first look among the aspens. The mountains framed the ceremony—timed perfectly to coincide with the sunset—after which guests decamped to a lounge area to sip cocktails and enjoy the view. — H N

Plastic packaging and single-use stationery are potential sources of waste at weddings. Tane and Matt combatted this issue in numerous ways beyond the recyclable boxes guests received with petals for the recessional. The menu cards at each place setting were customized with guests’ names so attendees could keep the pieces to use in the future as bookmarks.

Throughout our entire wedding, we didn’t use any plastic and opted for beautiful paper petal boxes for guests to toss at the end of our ceremony. -Tane

PERSONALIZATION “The day felt like us through and through,” shares Michele. “We had Pa’s wine as part of the escort card display, our dogs on the bar menu and my grandfather’s Bronze Star on my bouquet. Our loved ones were around us all day long.” As for their rescue-pup-inspired signature sips, Amy’s drink was “The Toby,” a mojito, and Michele’s was “The Bronn,” a spiked Arnold Palmer. SCHITT’S CREEK Not only did David Rose’s vows from the show inspire Michele’s promises to Amy, but the couple also danced (twice!) to “A Little Bit Alexis” during their reception.

While Amy was buying a home, her realtor commissioned Michele to make a piece of art with the words “today is a good day for a good day” to give Amy as a closing gift. Amy and Michele took a twofold approach to sustainability, DIYing some details while supporting local vendors in other areas. To display the bottles of wine Michele’s father made as favors, they crafted a repurposed wood sign. Then for catering, despite the smaller pandemic guest count, “we paid our caterer for the full guest count and delivered leftovers to loved ones nearby the next day.”

On our ﬁrst date, Michele came over with a bottle of her dad’s wine. We sat on my sofa for hours getting to know each other. Having her dad make us a special wedding blend was such an act of love. -Amy

DESIGN “Ryan was a huge fan of The Lion King growing up and we both fell in love with the Broadway production,” says Lauren. “Inspired by this, our vision was to create a ceremony that transported our guests back to when Simba and Nala fell in love in the jungle, complete with rich textures, natural wood and earth tones, and all the vibrant colors of an African sunset.” MASKS “Ryan’s mother and sister made safari-inspired masks for all of our guests,” says Lauren. RITUALS The couple’s ceremony included both a foot-washing ritual and jumping the broom. They also had each of their junior bridesmaids carry a rose for their grandparents, including Lauren’s late grandmother and two who joined via Zoom.

magine The Lion King’s Nala and Simba sharing a love-filled embrace as the sun sets on the African savanna. That’s what inspired the look of Lauren Kimble (31 and a wedding coordinator) and Ryan Hampton’s (32 and a mental health professional) vegan wedding at Valentine in Los Angeles. While the couple’s wedding design was memorable, the aesthetic of the day was secondary to the many priorities the couple shared for their event. They wanted a day that honored their Christian faith, didn’t put them into debt, safely followed pandemic guidelines and was sustainably minded. “My vegan and eco-conscious beliefs are very important to me,” Lauren says of prioritizing sustainability throughout the planning. “I wanted to make sure we minimized our carbon footprint as much as possible while also hosting a cruelty-free event.” — H N

The designs included roses paired with lisianthus, phlox and butterfly ranunculus. PERSONAL PROMISES The couple penned their own vows. “I vow never to stop asking for your warm hugs and kisses,” declared Ammy. “I vow to always make weird sounds with you and laugh awkwardly. I vow to always love, support and respect you.” DURABLE TOTE Ammy and Jeffrey selected woven bags for their welcome gifts, which included dried-fruit lollipops, so guests would have something they could reuse for years to come. VINO Wine was a major part of the weekend, from bottles in the welcome bags to locally sourced rosé garnished with edible blooms at dinner.

Ammy and Jeffrey specifically chose Kestrel Park as their wedding venue because “the entire location is so gorgeous.” Not only did the venue ensure the mauve-and-blush event was storybook-worthy (in a Rapunzel-esque moment, the couple’s first look took place in front of the stone castle!), but the landscape also helped the duo plan more sustainably. PARENTS ONLY When the pandemic forced Ammy and Jeffrey to cut their guest list, they decided to have only their four parents present for the nuptials. “Never did we ever imagine our wedding day wouldn’t include all of our loved ones and that we would be going through a pandemic, but we strongly believe everything happens for a reason. And this day turned out to be the most magical day of our lives. It was perfect. If sustainability is a key value of your wedding, it can be tough to find green dress options—but that’s about to change. Barcelona-based bridal brand Pronovias Group has launched #WeDoEco, a line of sustainable gowns. The collection consists of two parts: 15 entirely ecofriendly dresses (labeled 360° Eco), plus 24 dresses with sustainable components. “We want to ensure that brides are able to find their dream dress without having to compromise style,” says Alessandra Rinaudo, artistic director of Pronovias Group. 5 Fil Magazine is a vegan event planning and design publication aimed at bringing together the vegan community and the event planning industry. “The spark of inspiration for Fil Magazine came when, after attending a vegan festival, I started to think about how one would go about planning such an event,” recalls Kimble. “I went home to research magazines and websites dedicated to vegan events, and I was disappointed to find there was little to nothing for me to chew on. So I decided to create Fil for people who want to plan unique and memorable vegan experiences.”

ASK ABOUT M ANUFACTURING If an ethically made wedding dress is a big concern, find out as much as possible about the manufacturing process. “If you want to support locally made fashion, ask the designer where they produce to ensure it’s not made at a factory overseas,” advises Simmons. Dresses made in the USA tend to have a smaller carbon footprint—plus, they support the local economy.

GREEN WEDDING GUILD Emily Thomas and Maria Karagiannis created Green Wedding Guild to educate vendors and couples about sustainable wedding practices, encourage sustainability goals and connect couples to vendors that can help them reach these goals. The duo joined forces after feeling discouraged by the lack of sustainable initiatives in the wedding industry. “We hope that couples are inspired to think more intentionally about their wedding plans and consider ways to make their wedding day not only beautiful and memorable, but less impactful on the environment,” explain the founders.

PLAN LIKE AN INFLUENCER Jules Acree (née Hunt) and her husband, Andrew Acree, planned a green wedding weekend complete with dozens of refreshing details (including a giant Slip ’N Slide and a custom-made, eco-friendly wedding dress). “It was a no-brainer for us because those are the values we live by at home,” she says. When it came to eco-friendly wedding planning, Acree’s first priority was finding a venue that already valued sustainability. As a result, she and Andrew decided to wed in Costa Rica at Kinkara, a luxury eco-resort and wellness center. But Acree’s effort to minimize waste didn’t stop there. When it came to their stationery, the couple bucked tradition by skipping save-the-dates and then opted for wedding invitations printed on post-consumer recycled paper. Additionally, the couple went with online RSVPs to cut down on paper waste. Acree says if she had planned a local wedding, she would have tried to rent plants for the event. However, because of her destination venue, her florist used all organic and sustainably sourced flowers from a small local farm. Thoughtfully sourcing your flowers is not only great for the environment, but it’s also a great way to support small businesses near your wedding venue, says Acree.

But that’s simply not the case. Read on for tips and ideas on how your paper correspondence (signs, programs and more!) can still have a spot in Earth-friendly nuptials.

USE RECYCLED PAPER Did you know that every ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, the energy equivalent of 380 gallons of oil, and keeps almost 60 pounds of pollutants out of the atmosphere? Well, it does, according to Ariel Dekovic, coauthor of 365 Ways to Save the Earth. But keep in mind that not all recycled paper has the same positive impact on our planet. There’s actually a difference between 100 percent recycled paper and 100 percent postconsumer recycled paper. Companies can call paper items they produce 100 percent recycled if they use scraps from a tree they cut down. However, 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper means that only materials that have served their intended use—and would otherwise be sent to the trash—are involved in making the paper.

SUPPORT REFORESTATION Do a little digging and partner with companies that not only produce pretty invitations, but give back to Mother Earth as well. Paper Culture, for example, plants one tree for every order placed to help support reforestation and

EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE INKS Asking questions of your potential stationery partners is the best way to know what they can provide and whether they’re able to make some planet-friendly changes for you. When it comes to ink, inquire about the possibility of using soy- or vegetable-based inks as a greener option.

Moab-based wedding photographers Abbi and Callen Hearne are transforming the way couples tie the knot in nature.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO USE YOUR PLATFORM FOR SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION? The past five years have been a wild ride for outdoor spaces all around the world. Overall, we see this as a positive thing—more people falling in love with the outdoors who can become advocates for the spaces. That being said, we’ve seen some negative effects of this popularity, including people destroying fragile areas for cool photos, leaving trash behind on hikes and events like abandoned campfires causing millions of dollars of destruction and even lives lost. For us, a major turning point was when more photographers began shooting weddings in our home of Moab, Utah. They weren’t aware of the fragile soil here that can be destroyed with a single footstep off the trail. We’d see photos online of photographers intentionally posing couples in what they probably thought was just a field of dirt but was actually the 300-year-old living soil crust that holds the entire desert together. Seeing that prompted us to start talking more about how we must respect the places we visit and how it’s our responsibility to know these things before going to these places.

WHAT DOES THE PHRASE “LEAVE NO TRACE” MEAN? To put it simply, Leave No Trace is the idea of leaving nature better than you found it! Making sure your hike, photo shoot or adventure doesn’t cause damage to the land, plants or others who are also enjoying the land. LNT is actually an organization that has created seven principles around this concept: plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you ﬁnd, minimize campﬁre impacts, respect wildlife and be considerate of other visitors.

WHAT ARE BIG DOS AND DON’TS FOR TYING THE KNOT AT A NATIONAL PARK? The LNT principles truly cover it, but beyond that, couples need to realize that even though it’s your wedding day, you still need to respect the land, the local regulations and other visitors. You can have an amazing day without going past barriers. A few huge no-no’s we’ve seen are people throwing their bouquet off a cliff (this can not only be dangerous to people and animals below, but it’s also not safe for the environment to leave non-native ﬂora); playing loud music that changes the experience of fellow hikers; or people taking over a certain spot and thinking they have the right to it over other visitors just because they’re in wedding clothes. It’s also important to always get the proper permits. Make sure to prepare ahead of time, know the regulations so they aren’t a surprise day-of and be ﬂexible, because Mother Nature is always in control.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS? Dive into why you care about this, because the more you care, the more motivated you’ll be to make sustainable changes. Photography in itself isn’t necessarily an unsustainable practice, but implementing small changes—like following LNT principles, getting the right permits and reducing travel—can make a big difference. For example, we book elopements and our travel in blocks to reduce driving or ﬂying back and forth between places to reduce our personal footprint. Learning about things we’ve been irresponsible with in the past can help us become a better and more sustainable wedding vendor. If all of us improve just 10 percent, it will have a much bigger impact than a handful of us putting in 90 percent!
