remember learning about recycling in the first grade and immediately requesting (okay, maybe demanding) we become a household that prioritized recycling. As an adult, I’ve worked to make other small swaps in my day-to-day life, like ditching plastic water bottles for a Yeti, bringing my own tote bags to the grocery store and opting for more vegetarian meals. Admittedly, it’s not groundbreaking stuff, but little changes that feel doable and hopefully add up over time. It’s this concept that I encourage us all to consider—yes, even as we plan weddings. Weddings are beautiful, but like a lot of things in our life, they can be unintentionally wasteful. Let’s change that! I hope you find usable eco-friendly ideas, tips and tricks throughout this issue to do just that.

SUMMER NEWMAN Owner of Summer Newman Events Summer is an event planner based in Beverly Hills, California who plans high-touch, distinct weddings in SoCal and nationwide.

First of all, know you’re not alone. Most of my clients are looking for that exact balance. They want designs that thoughtfully evoke love, freedom, fun and celebration. They also want to party alongside loved ones, since the pandemic has forced everyone to truly appreciate the time we have on earth. I’ll just say it: Here come the roaring 2020s! But it’s still possible to prioritize sustainability at an all-out wedding. I’d advise you to focus on your rentals. Believe it or not, you can rent everything from plants and lanterns to cake platters, frames and even cocktail napkins to cut down on how many new items you purchase for the event. If you can’t find these items at a local party-rental company, try looking for specialty rental shops in your area. Also, ask your rental vendor to deliver items in less plastic, if possible, to reduce the amount of waste produced. When in doubt, source items locally to help reduce your wedding’s carbon footprint. And don’t do it alone: Ask your wedding planner for help every step of the way.

I can’t overstate my love of small bites— mini-sized food can pack a big punch. I’ve loved seeing how couples have taken smaller hors d’oeuvres to new heights, especially the miniature grazing boards. When I first noticed this trend on Instagram, it not only gave me a major cheese craving (though, frankly, that’s how I live my life!), but it seemed like an artistic innovation. The use of charcuterie cups and grazing boards felt so fresh. The small bites trend is not just a feast for the eyes and the mouth, but also an Insta-worthy photo op. But no matter what ideas are hot right now, it’s crucial to remind yourself that it’s your day. Make it your own, always.

ESSAY

FROM TO

WEDDING PLANNER

SUSTAINABLY MINDED BRIDE Alessandra Tacconelli opens up about stepping into her clients’ shoes and shares tips for planning sustainable nuptials.

or wedding planners, there’s often extra pressure when it comes to dreaming up their own day. Californiabased event pro Alessandra Tacconelli (23) met the task head-on. Not only did she plan a creative event to celebrate her marriage to professional baseball player John Brontsema (25), but she also prioritized sustainability in her floral decor. She shares expert tips for making your wedding design as green as possible. If making your entire event sustainable feels too overwhelming, consider finding one area to focus on, like Alessandra did. Even small changes will make a meaningful difference.

26

–HANNAH NOWACK

Planning my wedding was both rewarding and eye-opening. I’ve done many couples’ weddings, but designing my own showed me another side of the process and I can now relate to my clients on a new level. John and I met in high school in Santa Barbara, but we’ve traveled all over for his career, from Arizona and Arkansas to Delaware and New York. When we tied the knot in San Juan Capistrano, California, the lyric “home is wherever I’m with you”—from “Home,” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros—inspired us. For the design, I looked to my 2019 travels Down Under and let an Australian aesthetic inform the event—a look that lent itself to prioritizing sustainability in our wedding decor.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE Like anything, when planning a wedding, balance is key. Even if you just pick one or two things to focus on, you can take steps to be more eco-conscious while staying

21FALL_FOB_Essay.L [P]_12751.indd 26

PAMPAS PICS The photo booth backdrop was made entirely of recycled palm fronds and pampas grass the duo’s vendors had on hand.

true to your design. If sustainability is really important to you, voice that to your wedding planner so they can help brainstorm ways to achieve your dream aesthetic in a greener way.

COMPLEMENT EXISTING DECOR Since hedges surrounded our venue, I opted to forgo any greenery in the arrangements we brought in. Instead, I filled our wedding with neutral-hued dried textures, all of which popped against the hedges. Leaning into existing decor can help minimize single-use items.

CONSIDER DRIED ELEMENTS Using dried elements is an easy way to be eco-conscious. We incorporated dried botanicals sourced and reused from previous events my floral designer and I had worked on together. Notably, the hanging arrangement above the head table was first used at my bridal shower and then repurposed at the wedding. Our ceremony installation included reused dried ingredients like pampas grass—we later repurposed the piece at our reception, flanking our sweetheart

table. The great thing about dried elements is that with proper care, they can be used again and again.

RENT AND REUSE Renting items or repurposing decor you already own is a great eco-conscious solution. Rather than purchasing things just to be used at your wedding, consider rentals (think: furniture, vases, candelabras, signs) that will help you achieve a desired look without creating more waste. If you do end up buying decor, don’t trash it at the end of the night—resell or donate it so it can have a second life. Consider renting glasses, dishware and linens in lieu of singleuse plastic and paper products for your wedding day and any prewedding events. Remember, even just a few thoughtful decisions will go a long way in making your wedding greener.

ife is starting to pick back up again, and Jenna Dewan is here for it. The actress, dancer, author and former model is emerging from quarantine with excitement—and for good reason. She welcomed her second child in March of 2020, just as the world began to shut down. The timing meant she had a full year to hunker down at home with her new baby and her new fiancé, Broadway star Steve Kazee. After a postpartum pause, she’s ready to get back on screen and back down the aisle again too. I chatted with the Come Dance With Me judge about finding love again, her connection with Mother Earth and her plans for throwing a sustainable wedding.

L AU REN K AY: It’s safe to say 2020 was a chaotic year to say the least—but also a good one for you! You got engaged and welcomed your son, Callum Kazee. Congratulations! Can you take us back in time to the very beginning of your and Steve’s story? J EN NA DE WAN: Despite everything, there’s been a lot of good stuff going on. And yes, it’s a good story. About nine years ago, I happened to be in New York, so I took my mom to see Once on Broadway. We cried our eyes out and fell in love with the show—in particular, the lead actor, Steve Kazee. We thought he was just so talented. And funnily

COVER STORY enough, my mom had the biggest crush—she couldn’t stop saying, “he’s the cutest, so sensitive, so handsome.” She just kept going on and on. So I said, “let’s wait for him at the stage door so you can say hi.” So we did. We waited for a few minutes, and he appeared. I was pushing her forward to say hi, and Steve and I just had one of those eye-catching moments. It was very quick, but it struck us both. It was a moment. My mom and I told him what a great job he did and how it was such an amazing show, and that was it. We both went off into the night. But I never forgot the moment. Life went on, as it does. Many years later, we were in different situations. I was single again, he was single. He messaged me and said something like, “Hey, I don’t know if you remember me, but how are you?” And I was floored. Of course I remembered him. And that moment in 2012. And it was just kind of fate—it was totally meant to be. LK: So was it love at first sight? J D: It was. I think it was a remembrance at first sight, or that’s kinda what I like to call it. We just both thought, “hmm.” You go through life and you know those moments don’t happen every day. LK: True kismet. What about the proposal, was it a “moment” too?

Y O U F E E L LIKE YOU’RE BETTERING THE WORLD. J D: Oh, yes. I was pregnant with Callum and it was the weekend of my baby shower. My mom was in town and all my close friends were there too. My baby shower for Evie was more traditional, but this time I wanted something different. I like to say I’m a very spiritual-minded person, so I had a blessingway. It’s more like a ceremony and a celebration of motherhood than a baby shower. So everyone sat in a circle and shared words of wisdom and offered a blessing to Callum and to Steve and me, and while we were doing that, we wove this dream catcher together. Everyone brought a crystal or a token to weave into it. When the dream catcher got to Steve, he said, “I have a song,” and got out his guitar. He had written this song and halfway through he sings, “will you marry me?” And everyone gasped. Meanwhile, this had been in the works for months. My daughter, Evie, knew it was happening—I still have no idea how she kept it a secret. She’s only seven! She and Steve had a whole thing and she came running out. We were all in tears. That moment was just really special, and there was a feeling in the air that day. Nothing in my life has been really traditional. Things have happened and there have been a lot of transitions. I like that we’re doing this our own way.

21FALL_FEAT_CoverStory.L [P]_13022.indd 30

LK: What a special moment. Yet, somehow you forgot to mention that epic sparkler. Tell us about the ring. J D: Oh, yes, the ring is really amazing. One of our good friends is the actress Nikki Reed. She lives a very sustainable life and walks her talk. She started this jewelry line called BaYou with Love, and she designs these incredible engagement rings and wedding bands and all kinds of jewelry. Everything is made from sustainable materials—like they melt down Dell computers and use the gold. She grows these beautiful diamonds in a lab too. Steve had been working with her for months to design the ring. I am just obsessed with it. LK: So Steve knew sustainability was important to you?

J D: Oh, yes, he knew. He knows my connection to sustainability and the planet and living a healthy life. For me, it’s really all about the connection. If we all realized just how connected we are in this life, we could appreciate how our actions truly affect everyone—and that extends to Mother Earth. Sure, it can be difficult at times to try and live sustainably, but it’s also amazing. Like who would have thought a ring like this could be sustainable? And yet it is. It’s gorgeous! And hands down my favorite piece of jewelry. It’s more about the thought, that idea of connections. LK: Can you share more about your desire to live a green life? You’ve adopted a plant-based diet. Is that one of the ways in

21FALL_FEAT_CoverStory.L [P]_13022.indd 31

which you are trying to live more sustainably? J D: Yes, and it all started when I was 10. My mom always tells the story that I watched a documentary on TV about a slaughterhouse. I was always the kid who was very emotionally attached to animals and never liked eating meat. I cried when I saw roadkill. So that super-sensitive kid watches this documentary and declares, “I will never be eating meat again. From this point forward, I am a vegetarian.” And I really didn’t eat meat in my teenage years and haven’t since. It began with me being aware of the interconnectedness of all of us. I wanted all animals to be fairly treated, and I had such disdain for factory farming. Then it turned toward the environment.

6/17/21 1:24 PM

These last few years have really highlighted sustainability for me. I want to live more sustainably and support brands with that ethos. It used to feel like it was always a trade-off, but now there are so many amazing fashion brands and larger companies that carry sustainable items. It’s so much easier to adopt this lifestyle nowadays. LK: You’ve described yourself as a beauty junkie. Tell me a little bit about your journey to clean beauty. J D: When I was pregnant for the first time, I became insistent about using only clean beauty products. I slathered coconut oil, straight out of the jar, all over my body. But because I am a beauty junkie, I like products that actually work. I like to play around, and I discovered a lot of clean beauty brands that were also really effective. Same for clothing brands. It just kind of evolved from there to a place of open-mindedness. Sustainable choices are out there, and they’re really great too. LK: You got engaged, had a baby and then the world shut down. Has this year changed the way you’re thinking about your wedding? J D: It’s so funny, we hadn’t even had a chance to talk much about our wedding. A month after we got engaged, I had Callum and then a week later, quarantine began. We just put everything on pause. But I am a firm believer in staying in the flow of life. I know I will know when it’s right. Same goes for the details of the day. I definitely think in the past few years, there’s been an emphasis on simplicity and on presence. I’m much more about making what’s important really count, which is each other and our family and having a great time celebrating together. It could be a destination wedding, like gathering our families and a few great friends in Palm Springs for the weekend. We have so many ideas still floating around, but they all boil down to this: presence, connection and togetherness. LK: You said earlier that nothing about your life has been very traditional. What about your wedding? Do you think you’ll incorporate any traditions? J D: Oh, Evie would never forgive me if I did not let her be the flower girl. She would never speak to me again—that’s how much it means to her. I will for sure keep the tradition of incorporating Evie and Callum in the wedding. I love the tradition of incorporating my mom and my dad too. Steve’s mom has passed on, and so it’s important to me to incorporate her presence into the ceremony

and honor her in some way. I like the idea of writing our own vows, and we’ll have someone special to us officiate. Overall, I think we will focus on having a spiritual ceremony. And of course, we’ll have some kind of celebration after. LK: Any dream catcher moments planned? J D: I know, it’s a good idea. I know we should do something like that. It wouldn’t be me if there wasn’t a sprinkle of dream catcher somewhere! LK: This is your second marriage. What have you learned along the way about yourself and commitment? J D: I think I’ve become a more grounded and present version of myself. When you’re younger, you don’t put as much thought into everything. You kind of do what you know and what’s been done before. As you get older, you have a little bit more wisdom and more consciousness in everything. It’s not as important to have this lavish celebration, for example. It’s much more important to me to have a meaningful moment that I’ll never forget, surrounded by a small group of people I know and love and who are supportive. I think your circle gets smaller and more meaningful as you get older. And especially after 2020—the pandemic made that especially clear to me. It all comes down to what’s important and who are the connections and relationships you want to foster. It’s also about how you want to feel and connect in life. I want all of that at the forefront of my wedding. LK: And is there anything about your wedding that you’re really focused on keeping sustainable? J D: I think an eco-friendly wedding means having a small, intimate celebration. At this time in my life, I am definitely more drawn to the meaningful gathering rather than the lavish party. I think it would be really beautiful to have a sustainable wedding dress or work with a designer to create something that is sustainable. And I love the idea of recycled invites. There are some incredible ways to work with flowers. I worked with Forage Florals for my blessingway, and the owner was incredible. All the flowers are sourced within a five-mile radius and totally dependent on what’s in season. I would love to find a local, organic, farm-to-table caterer and donate leftovers after the wedding. There are a lot of ways to be sustainable. And you can still have a gorgeous wedding and something you feel good about. You feel like you’re bettering the world.

DARK ACADEMIA?

Cottagecore romanticizes the purity of simple pleasures and is nostalgic for a slower pace of life in a rural setting (think: a cottage tucked away in the English countryside). Visually, the look is represented by light and airy fabrics, pastel colors and earthy flowers. One Reddit user explains it simply: “Your grandma, but like, hip.” Cottagecore is, in a sense, becoming the “new bohemian” of weddings.

Fully inspired by Bridgerton, the regencycore aesthetic is influenced by Britain’s Regency period circa 1800. The style is characterized by deep hues of gold and brass and contrasting shades of light pastel pinks and whites, ornate art, opulent architecture and dramatic fashion silhouettes. Empire waistlines, full skirts, corseted bodices, rich silk fabrics and pearl jewelry befit the storied yet of-the-moment vibe.

VSCO refers to a popular photo-editing app; the associated aesthetic rose to internet fame in 2018. VSCO nuptials are all about doing it for the ’gram. A VSCO wedding could kick off with wedding party members getting ready in oversized #SquadGoals tees and enjoying the Hydro Flasks they were given as thank-you gifts. A bright color palette, string lights and Polaroid photo booth are musts.

Dark academia is a popular Tumblr aesthetic that romanticizes writing, poetry, classic Greek and Gothic architecture, and the arts. The dark aisles of European libraries filled with novels like Frankenstein or Wuthering Heights would inspire the nuptials; vintage books may even serve as favors. A color palette of rich black, gray and maroon hues would be the backdrop to a cocktail hour harp performance.

CONSCIOUS C A R AT S It’s a little-known fact that most lab-grown diamonds are created using fossil fuels (obtained through mining and deep drilling) as their source of carbon. Enter: Aether, a lab-grown diamond company that makes diamonds from air pollution. “For every one carat of diamond Aether creates, we remove 20 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which offsets 1.25 years of the average American’s carbon footprint,” says CMO Robert Hagemann. We call that a major wedding bling win.

HOW DOES SUSTAINABILITY FACTOR INTO YOUR BRAND? We’re a slow fashion brand, meaning we make almost all of our pieces locally in New York, we make limited products for our own website and everything else is made to order. Our collections are carefully considered. We have very little waste left over and we aim to create heirlooms that will last for a long time.

Q:

WHAT’S TRENDING IN WEDDING HEADWEAR? I’m loving statement headbands, especially ones with height. They photograph beautifully and they work really well with more casual attire like shorter dresses. We’ve also seen voilette veils of all kinds—whether they’re simple or attached to an embellished headband—gain popularity. Those are really cool because they can be worn with everything from a cathedral-length train to a casual dress that’s more minimony-appropriate.

Q:

TIPS FOR PULLING OFF BOLD ACCESSORIES? Just go for it. Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful. Throw the idea of “timeless” out the window. You want your wedding photos to look like you, so don’t try to dress for what you might like in 20 years.

CONNECT WITH YOUR FEELINGS

CHANGE UP YOUR ENERGY

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

MAKE SELF-CARE MEDITATIVE

SHOW YOURSELF COMPASSION

Suppressing an emotion makes it worse. Research has proven that labeling a feeling reduces its impact. Say a sentence like, “Today, I feel stressed about the wedding.” Remind yourself that emotions are temporary.

If you’re experiencing an intense emotion like anxiety or fear, it’s easy to get stuck in the feeling and spiral. Change your physical energy by taking a quick walk or dancing to your favorite song, and your state of mind will follow.

No matter how much is on your to-do list, don’t sacrifice sleep— it’s essential to well-being. When we’re tired, our inner critic is louder, we have less patience and less energy to challenge the thoughts that are stressing us out.

If you don’t have time to meditate, slow down your skin care ritual. Take time to smell your face cream and enjoy the feeling of massaging it into your skin (I love using Erno Laszlo’s firming cream). Don’t rush self-care.

If you’re being self-critical, ask yourself this question: What would I say to a friend dealing with a similar situation? It’s important to use a compassionate voice and be kind to yourself during wedding planning.

No running—ever. Nobody walks out no matter what happens. To take care when old, senile, smelly. This is forever.

It’s not something you just stick out. It’s a risk that you take together. And you don’t just promise it once. You’ve gotta promise it every day.

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

Daphne pearl and diamond ring in platinumtopped gold, $3,100, DevereuxCollection.com

Lab-grown stones are made using either the high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. While both use energy—and often fossil fuels—these processes have a lesser environmental impact than traditional mining. Going with a lab-grown stone over a newly mined one may not be a perfect solution, but it’s a step in the right direction. Another plus? The cost. The price of a created diamond depends on the stone you choose, but it’s typically less expensive than a mined one.

Opting for a ring that’s “something old” is a sentimental move that also helps out Mother Earth. It might not seem obvious, but vintage jewelry is an eco-friendly choice because it doesn’t require new stones and metals—and thus the carbon footprint— that brand-new pieces do. Buyer beware: Many rings are labeled “vintage” but are actually vintage-inspired. Verify you’re getting the real deal before you purchase.

It’s an unfortunate truth that metal mining, and gold mining in particular, is environmentally destructive. It takes 20 tons of ore and millions of gallons of water to produce enough gold for one ring. The good news? You can help diminish the demand for freshly mined minerals by choosing bling with recycled metals or Fairmined gold (read: gold from small, artisanal mines backed by a third-party certification). These responsibly sourced metals are equally as durable—and shiny—as their newly mined counterparts.

This is an ideal option if you’re in the market for an antique diamond (think: rose cuts and old European cuts), you have an heirloom piece you’d like to rework or you simply don’t want to go lab-grown. Chic cluster settings (like the one below) are a megawatt way to reimagine the smaller stones from earrings, pendants and tennis bracelets that don’t quite feel like “you.”

GREEN ROUTINE Planning your prewedding skin care and makeup is the perfect time to reexamine your habits. Here, professional makeup artist and sustainable beauty expert Jessa Blades shares eight ways to reduce your carbon footprint—beautifully.

3

PAY ATTENTION TO PACKAGING

STREAMLINE YOUR PRODUCTS

“Glass is easier to recycle, so opt for glass bottles over plastic ones when you can,” Blades says. Here’s the skinny on glass vs. plastic packaging: While glass is made of natural materials and maintains its quality when recycled, plastic is petroleum-based and breaks down over time. This negatively impacts the environment because every time plastic is recycled, it’s repurposed into something of different and lesser quality (aka downcycled). Eventually, plastic containers can’t be recycled anymore and end up in a landfill.

2

Lay out all of your cosmetics and skin care products and take note of what you use most—it should be pretty obvious. Then, commit to only replenishing those products when they run out, rather than splurging on whatever catches your eye online or at the mall. “We have to switch off that desire to always amass more,” Blades says. “More is not necessarily better. Most people only need a few products, and part of being more sustainable is consuming less in general and cutting back where we can.”

DIY WHEN POSSIBLE “I love the idea of turning to your own pantry and using ingredients you already own, like organic olive and coconut oils, instead of buying new products,” Blades says. She recommends slathering yourself in these oils (preferably the kinds that come in glass bottles) before showering in lieu of using traditional body moisturizer. “You can also make lots of body scrubs and face masks with things in your kitchen,” she says. The logic here is simple: The more you use the stuff you already own, the less waste you create by purchasing new products in new packaging.

JESSA BLADES @jessablades

Jessa Blades is a celebrity makeup artist and natural beauty expert based in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. In 2008, Blades made the switch to clean products and founded her company, Blades Natural Beauty.

Customizable palettes and multisticks are trending, but these versatile products also have a sustainable aspect, according to Blades. “Most people don’t finish their products,” she says. “If you never finish your lipsticks or blush, consider buying a multistick that can do both.” And if you find yourself buying numerous makeup palettes because you can’t find just one that works for you, go the custom route. “Companies like MAC make magnetic palettes, where you can only buy the colors you’ll actually wear, which leads to less waste,” she says.

DIY BRIGHTENING FACE MASK Use this before your skin care routine to boost your glow.

INVEST IN GOOD TOOLS Rather than springing for the latest makeup sponge or applicator (which will likely have to be replaced often) or relying heavily on single-use products like Q-tips and cotton balls, Blades suggests purchasing high-quality makeup brushes and reusable cotton rounds that will last. “If you care for your makeup brushes by washing, conditioning and drying them every two weeks or so, you can forgo the Q-tips and sponges,” she says. “Those things might speed up your routine a little bit, but all you really need are good brushes, reusable cotton rounds and your fingertips.”

6

DO YOUR RESEARCH “Green” and “clean” may be the beauty buzzwords of the moment, but that doesn’t always tell the full story of a brand’s environmental impact. “Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions,” Blades says. “For example, you should feel comfortable asking how an ingredient is harvested, if it’s endangered and what the conditions are like for the workers harvesting it.” If a brand is truly sustainable and ethical, sharing more about its business practices shouldn’t be an issue.

INGREDIENTS 1 tsp. honey

+

1 tsp. yogurt (organic whole milk, plain)

7

COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PROS

+

1 small pinch of turmeric powder

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all ingredients together 2. Spread mask on clean face (be mindful of turmeric staining light fabrics) 3. Leave on for 10 to 20 minutes 4. Rinse off with warm water 5. Pat face dry and apply moisturizer or face oil

If sustainability is one of the key values of your wedding, make sure your day-of glam squad is on board. Request sustainable products and clearly communicate any additional asks (think: you’d prefer to forgo any single-use tools) at your trial. “Makeup artists are usually using a kit, which is much more sustainable than buying new products and throwing them away, but you should also feel free to bring your own products,” Blades says. “Your pros should be able to work with your stuff too and accommodate your requests.”

8

THINK BEYOND YOUR WEDDING On the other hand, if you have your heart set on using long-wear products on your day that aren’t necessarily clean or green—don’t sweat it. The environmental benefits of creating a more sustainable beauty regimen come from adopting good habits that add up over time. “Using a waterproof mascara or long-lasting foundation for one day isn’t the end of the world,” Blades says. “It’s the other 364 days of the year you should be thinking about. That’s what really counts.”

FULL-SPECTRUM No “bride” or “groom” categories here. Instead, find some of our favorite gender-inclusive makeup brands to help you express yourself to the fullest on your wedding day. BY MADDY SIMS

While wedding makeup has historically only been advertised to those who identify as “bride,” anyone can use it. Rocking makeup—whether it’s minimal cover-up, high-impact lipstick and eye shadow, or something in between—is a powerful way to show personality on your day. To help inspire your wedding glam, we rounded up some of our favorite gender-inclusive beauty brands that offer products for everyone. Go ahead: Show the world your authentic self.

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA Rihanna debuted her beauty line in 2017 with a focus on inclusivity. “I wanted everyone to feel included—that’s the real reason I made this line,” she says. “Makeup is there for you to play with and have fun with. You should always have a blast with it: Take chances, take risks, and dare to do something different.”

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth bronzer, $30, FentyBeauty.com

BOY SMELLS Boy Smells calls its scents “genderful” rather than genderless or unisex. “Genderful is both masculine and feminine—it's all gender expressions,” says Matthew Herman, cofounder and creator of Boy Smells. He says the new fragrance line is called Cologne de Parfum, since cologne is traditionally associated with men and eau de parfum with women.

MILK MAKEUP Georgie Greville, cofounder and creative director at Milk Makeup, says the company was inspired by the creative energy and people in the Big Apple. “We're a microcosm of New York City, so there was never going to be just one aesthetic that we spoke to or championed,” she says. “We champion the whole spectrum.”

LIVE TINTED

Live Tinted Huestick in Change, $24, LiveTinted.com

Deepica Mutyala founded Live Tinted after noticing immense gaps in representation in the beauty industry. “I wanted to build a company that would not only create a community for those who didn’t see themselves in beauty, but would also lead by example and shift the standards for the industry,” she says. “Celebrating your hues is not only for girls and women. It’s important for our brand to represent different skin tones and affirm representation across the board.”

Ace Beauté Flair eye shadow palette, $39, AceBeaute.com

ACE BEAUTÉ Niye Aniekan-Attang, founder and owner of Ace Beauté, created a brand that welcomes everyone after noticing more traditional beauty companies lacked inclusivity. “Our motto is ‘Beauty For All,’” she says. “That’s beauty for everyone, regardless of age, gender, skin color, religion or cultural beliefs. We celebrate everyone’s unique beauty.”

“The company came together around the idea that makeup can be a tool of transformation and a powerful means of self-actualization, especially for gender nonconforming folx,” says Laura Kraber, cofounder of We Are Fluide. “Our mission is to showcase and celebrate the self-expression of people of all gender identities—and to represent an inclusive and expansive definition of beauty.”

Dowdy, founder of Coloured Raine. “No one should ever feel left out.”

Truth talk: You can incorporate sustainable and eco-friendly elements into your wedding day without adding costs or compromising style. The right pro team (one who shares your Earth-earnestness) can offer suggestions for smart swaps, like eco-friendly invites, china and glass rentals to encourage reuse, a locally sourced menu and conscious cleanup (composting #ftw). Opt for an outdoor venue and keep your guest list small—the fewer people, the less waste. Skip the favors and make a donation to an environmental charity instead. And remember, this is your day: “You have the purchasing power to hire brands who care about the environment and give back to the local community,” says Michelle Ellamae of Ellamae Productions.

A SECOND LIFE Did you declutter during quarantine? Or maybe you’ve discovered a few things that could use an upgrade after a year at home? Help your well-loved goods find a new home and wish list a sustainable replacement for yourselves. M A T T R E S S You spend a staggering amount of your lifetime in bed, a casual 33 years on average. It’s only right to catch zzz’s on a comfortable cushion. If your mattress is still in good shape, you can donate it to a local secondhand store or charity. If you think it’s seen better days (sagging, lumps, etc.), don’t kick it to the curb just yet. Roughly 80 percent of the materials that make up your mattress can be recycled. You can create artful arrangements with the use of a metal floral frog, a reusable prong-like insert that holds stems in place, or chicken wire. Be sure that you and your florist are aligned on this swap.

4 D O N ’ T B U Y, R E N T Instead of purchasing vases, candelabras and other decorative items, ask your florist to borrow them instead. “We keep a diverse inventory of vessels and rent those to our clients, thus avoiding waste, especially from paper and plastic packaging when ordering new,” says Culver. This ensures those vintage milk-glass vases can delight at a future celebration too.

2 CHOOSE IN-SEASON STEMS

As with every vendor choice, do your homework. Most florists are well-versed and passionate about sustainable practices, but it’s important to partner with someone who shares your vision. “You invest in vendors, and therefore their vendors’ practices around sourcing, waste, labor and social justice,” says Molly Culver, owner of Molly Oliver Flowers in Brooklyn, New York. Inquire about their values and ethical practices, and make your priorities known, she adds. “Speaking up to your florist about the importance of sourcing organically grown flowers sends the message to local farmers that consumers will pay a premium for flowers grown without chemicals that could harm laborers and the environment.”

If you’re looking for peonies in say, February, they’re being shipped halfway across the world to adorn your aisle—read: not very Earth-friendly. Choosing locally grown flowers means you’ll have the freshest product available and one that travels the shortest distance. Culver sources all of her florals from a 200-mile radius, supporting local farms. “While there are now Fair Trade certifiers that can help florists consciously select foreign products, it’s harder to have a relationship with the grower and know what their labor and diseasemanagement practices look like on the ground,” says Culver.

9 GIVE THEM A SECOND LIFE There will be waste, but any effort to minimize it counts. If your centerpieces are still perky after the last dance, send them out into the world. Coordinate with your florist or planner to donate stems to a local hospital or senior living community where they are sure to bring joy (many of these establishments keep vases on hand for this very thing).

10 COMPOST THE REST

If your florist is eco-minded, they’ll be opting for minimal packaging whenever possible. Let them know you’d prefer to use little plastic when wrapping bouquets for delivery, opting for recyclable paper instead. Same goes for plastic transport vases—most florists will be happy to swap in a sustainable glass option.

6 USE DRIED B O TA N I C A L S Dried flowers are having a moment— and we’re here for it. “More and more couples are aware of the full cost of having fresh florals for just one day and have found more sustainable efforts to achieve a beautiful atmosphere,” says Alex Bates, creative director and cofounder of online shop Bloomist. Dried branches and blooms have a lot of reuse potential, from the shower to the wedding day and beyond. They look beautiful on their own and play well with fresh florals. Complementary colors work best and give off an epic textured vibe in arrangements.

21FALL_STYPLAN_StyleB.L [P]_13109.indd 73

7 REPURPOSE LIKE YO U M E A N I T Strategize with your florist to make the most of your wedding arrangements— from start to finish. A ceremony backdrop can later flank a sweetheart table, while aisle arrangements can be reimagined on cocktail tables. Consider saving a few centerpieces to be redistributed at the morning-after brunch too.

Blooms past their prime can still do good. Many florists will compost branches and florals post-event. Garbage Goddess, a New York–based eco-cleanup service, offers a full breakdown service, composting all organic matter and recycling materials. “We keep the organic matter out of landfills, where they emit eroding greenhouse gasses,” says Liza Lubell, founder of Garbage Goddess. “When florals are composted, it greatly reduces methane levels and new plants and flowers can grow out of the old ones.” Lubell also works with a local network of artists who extract dyes from the flowers, creating new works of art from them. Thoughtful cleanup reduces landfill pileup.

8 OPT FOR POTTED PLANTS Swapping fresh-cut flowers for live plants is an eco-conscious option that’s gaining steam. Use potted topiaries or bushes to line an outdoor aisle, or cluster a few vessels together to create a centerpiece with a garden-like appeal. The plants can be replanted after your “I dos” or doled out to guests after the reception.

BLENDING BACKGROUNDS “Since we’re a mixed-race couple, we wanted to honor Danica’s formal Filipino traditions while paying homage to Colin’s more casual, secular family,” explains the duo. One of the Filipino rituals included in the ceremony was “an exchange of coins, known as the arras, to symbolize wealth and prosperity.” GREEN GIFTS Guests departed the wedding with thoughtful and sustainable favors. The couple ordered cookies from a company that upcycles spent grain from breweries into flour for baking. Then they encased the treats in reusable beeswax wrappers. ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY A friend of the couple made a wood ring box for the nuptials and some candle holders, while Colin’s mom made all of the centerpieces.

M

uch of Danica Jayme (29 and an occupational therapist) and Colin Mayer’s (31 and a teacher) relationship blossomed over “hiking, skiing and exploring the ocean and mountains of British Columbia.” So it was only fitting that their wedding north of Vancouver, among the foothills of the sweeping peaks of Canada’s Pacific coast, embody an “ocean-meets-mountain” aesthetic with a blue-and-green color palette. And for a couple whose love of nature is central to their relationship (Danica is a plant mom to 31 seedlings!), a wedding that was “as close to zero-waste as possible” was a top priority. “This meant no mailed paper invitations, no single-use plastic products like balloons, and reusing or upcycling as much as we could from our friend network,” explains Danica. — HAN NAH N OWAC K

In an effort to make their wedding more sustainable, “it was important to us that we supported as many local companies and vendors as we could,” says Danica. One British Columbia–based company the couple supported through their wedding fashion was sustainable footwear brand Casca. Colin and his groomsmen donned Casca’s dusty blue kicks to complement their navy suits.

We focused on tangible and inclusive sustainable actions that still allowed us to feel like the wedding was ours. Throughout the process, we learned that simplicity is key for a sustainable wedding. -Danica

FLOWERS While bougainvillea was the wedding’s focal bloom, the designs also used celosia, dahlias, zinnias, cacti and dried sago palms. Fresh papayas and mangoes added a tropical touch. FAMILY FIRST Family was central to the couple’s ceremony. Eileen was escorted down the aisle by “the most important women in my life”: her mother, sister and nine-month-old niece. Chris walked his mom down the aisle. Since both Eileen and Chris’s dads passed away when they were 13, the duo honored their late fathers during the ceremony. WELCOME BAGS Upon arrival, guests received baskets filled with Mexican-inspired amenities: “a Turkish towel, Modelo Especial, limes, a cactus bottle opener and a bag of the best, in our opinion, tortilla chips.”

I

f you’ve ever doubted that texture is key to great design, look no further than Eileen Lacey (36 and a wedding planner) and Chris Murphy’s (35 and a national account manager) wedding. Prickly pear cacti, feathery bougainvillea, rugged leather and bohemian rattan: Everywhere guests looked during the couple’s big day, they were greeted by layer upon layer of eye-catching texture. Eileen and Chris initially planned to tie the knot in Mexico, but when the pandemic forced them to keep the event close to home, they decided to bring a vibrant Mexican aesthetic to their coastal California nuptials. The key to achieving this vision? “Lots of color and tons of bougainvillea everywhere!” says Eileen. “We wanted the design elements to feel like they just as easily could’ve been from Mexico.” — H N

SECOND LIFE “We donated all of the locally sourced flowers and fruit on the tables and bar after the wedding,” says Eileen of the eco-conscious approach the couple took with their botanicals. TEQUILA TRIO In keeping with the Mexican inspiration, Eileen and Chris offered three tequila cocktails: a spicy marg with jalapeno and Tajín; a Paloma with grapefruit juice; and a floral marg with hibiscus, Cointreau and a pink Himalayan salt rim. To avoid single-use plastic straws, the duo served drinks with edible tamarind straws. LET’S EAT “Mexican food was a must!” says Eileen. “At cocktail hour, we served a trio of mini tacos. Dinner included enchiladas, chile relleno and grilled vegetables. We also had churros with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces for dessert.”

PRESERVATION “Telluride is such a special place to us, and we wanted to preserve the natural beauty of it as much as possible through the planning process,” says Tane. Inside their dinner tent, the couple chose to forgo flooring the entire space so the grass underfoot wouldn’t be harmed. But that didn’t stop them from making the tent shine. “The wow factor was the fall foliage adorning each tent pole, and the bamboo chandeliers lighting up the space.” FORAGED FLOWERS The couple’s floral designer “foraged the area to infuse foliage that came directly from the landscape we were getting married in,” says Tane. CLASSIC CAKE The couple saved the top tier of their white-chocolate, praline-crunch wedding cake so they could enjoy the dessert down the road.

T

here’s a reason so many songs wax poetic about escaping to the mountains to relax. That calming feeling of being surrounded by rustling foliage and rugged peaks is exactly why Tane Harvey (26 and works in merchandising) and Matthew (Matt) McDonald (26 and an estate services specialist) returned to the Colorado Rockies, the location of their engagement, to tie the knot. During a prior visit to Telluride, the couple “fell in love with the open space and the absolutely stunning views.” They celebrated the locale at every step of the wedding, starting with a first look among the aspens. The mountains framed the ceremony—timed perfectly to coincide with the sunset—after which guests decamped to a lounge area to sip cocktails and enjoy the view. — H N

Plastic packaging and single-use stationery are potential sources of waste at weddings. Tane and Matt combatted this issue in numerous ways beyond the recyclable boxes guests received with petals for the recessional. The menu cards at each place setting were customized with guests’ names so attendees could keep the pieces to use in the future as bookmarks.

Throughout our entire wedding, we didn’t use any plastic and opted for beautiful paper petal boxes for guests to toss at the end of our ceremony. -Tane

efore they even met, Michele DePasquale (32 and a teacher and coach) unknowingly made a housewarming gift for her future wife, Amy Schimmel (29 and a social worker). While Amy was buying a home, her realtor commissioned Michele to make a piece of art with the words “today is a good day for a good day” to give Amy as a closing gift. That artwork sparked a romance between the two and the phrase came to hold even more meaning once they celebrated their “Sunday Funday”–themed wedding. “Amy’s only design directive was lots of color,” says Michele of their prismatic celebration. “We wanted it to feel like a real celebration of our love and family.” The colorful day included a rainbow cake topper, masks the couple tie-dyed with their nephew and plenty of bright blooms. — H N

Amy and Michele took a twofold approach to sustainability, DIYing some details while supporting local vendors in other areas. To display the bottles of wine Michele’s father made as favors, they crafted a repurposed wood sign. Then for catering, despite the smaller pandemic guest count, “we paid our caterer for the full guest count and delivered leftovers to loved ones nearby the next day.”

On our first date, Michele came over with a bottle of her dad’s wine. We sat on my sofa for hours getting to know each other. Having her dad make us a special wedding blend was such an act of love. -Amy

DESIGN “Ryan was a huge fan of The Lion King growing up and we both fell in love with the Broadway production,” says Lauren. “Inspired by this, our vision was to create a ceremony that transported our guests back to when Simba and Nala fell in love in the jungle, complete with rich textures, natural wood and earth tones, and all the vibrant colors of an African sunset.” MASKS “Ryan’s mother and sister made safari-inspired masks for all of our guests,” says Lauren. RITUALS The couple’s ceremony included both a foot-washing ritual and jumping the broom. They also had each of their junior bridesmaids carry a rose for their grandparents, including Lauren’s late grandmother and two who joined via Zoom.

That’s what inspired the look of Lauren Kimble (31 and a wedding coordinator) and Ryan Hampton’s (32 and a mental health professional) vegan wedding at Valentine in Los Angeles. While the couple’s wedding design was memorable, the aesthetic of the day was secondary to the many priorities the couple shared for their event. They wanted a day that honored their Christian faith, didn’t put them into debt, safely followed pandemic guidelines and was sustainably minded. “My vegan and eco-conscious beliefs are very important to me,” Lauren says of prioritizing sustainability throughout the planning. “I wanted to make sure we minimized our carbon footprint as much as possible while also hosting a cruelty-free event.” — H N

It was important to Lauren and Ryan that their wedding leave “as small of a carbon footprint as possible.” Thoughtfulness with decor helped them make that priority a reality. The couple was able to minimize how many arrangements they brought in because the “venue is actually a greenhouse, with a variety of live plants serving as the backdrop for the ceremony itself.”

I made sure to hire vendors who were well-versed in vegan and eco-conscious events. For our decor elements, our designer used dried flowers and lots of repurposed materials. - L auren

TWICE AS NICE The floral arrangements used to demarcate the ceremony aisle were later repurposed to frame the dinner table. The designs included roses paired with lisianthus, phlox and butterfly ranunculus. PERSONAL PROMISES The couple penned their own vows. “I vow never to stop asking for your warm hugs and kisses,” declared Ammy. “I vow to always make weird sounds with you and laugh awkwardly. I vow to always love, support and respect you.” DURABLE TOTE Ammy and Jeffrey selected woven bags for their welcome gifts, which included dried-fruit lollipops, so guests would have something they could reuse for years to come. VINO Wine was a major part of the weekend, from bottles in the welcome bags to locally sourced rosé garnished with edible blooms at dinner.

A

mid a year when the farthest many people traveled was to their mailbox, Ammy Pukasamsombut (27 and a teacher) and Jeffrey Cruz (36 and a first responder) transported their four guests to the English countryside without leaving California. Ammy and Jeffrey specifically chose Kestrel Park as their wedding venue because “the entire location is so gorgeous.” Not only did the venue ensure the mauve-and-blush event was storybook-worthy (in a Rapunzel-esque moment, the couple’s first look took place in front of the stone castle!), but the landscape also helped the duo plan more sustainably. The couple focused on enhancing Kestrel Park’s beauty, bringing in minimal outside decor and reusing floral arrangements where possible. — H N

PARENTS ONLY When the pandemic forced Ammy and Jeffrey to cut their guest list, they decided to have only their four parents present for the nuptials. “Never did we ever imagine our wedding day wouldn’t include all of our loved ones and that we would be going through a pandemic, but we strongly believe everything happens for a reason. And this day turned out to be the most magical day of our lives. It was perfect. It was our happily ever after.” LITE BITES Individual grazing boards filled with charcuterie, cheese and fresh fruit were a must for the couple. TWO TIERS Instead of a two-tier wedding cake, the couple served two single-layer strawberry-and-cream wedding cakes: one with handpainted flowers and the other with a ribbon accent.

WAYS TO THROW A (MORE) SUSTAINABLE CELEBRATION

Instead of renting a tent, enjoy dinner inside a greenhouse.

Overwhelmed by the thought of a carbon-neutral affair? A couple of swaps can make a big difference.

1 CHOOSE AN ECO-FRIENDLY VENUE

Consider exchanging your vows in the great outdoors. Vineyards and mountainsides offer stunning vistas, and a greenhouse or garden has built-in decor. If you want to take the celebration inside, partner with a space that shares your passion for planet Earth. Many venues have updated their practices to reduce waste, use renewable energy and be more eco-conscious in all things.

2 HIRE A LIKE-MINDED PRO SQUAD Working with a team that shares your commitment to sustainability will set you up for a successful event. Pros can offer eco-friendly suggestions and will ultimately support your desire to make green choices. They’ll know just the suppliers to tap when it comes to goods and services.

Opt for 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper for your wedding correspondence. Consider a vendor that’s also combatting deforestation. The Knot Invitations’ recycled option is Forest Stewardship Council certified; some companies even plants saplings for each order.

GIF TS 5 AS K FOR GREEN GIFTS

Fill your registry with things you really need, favoring companies that are like-minded in their sustainability efforts. Or ask guests to donate to a green cause in your honor. Similarly, in lieu of favors, make a donation on behalf of your friends and family.

Seek out designers who use eco-friendly fabrics and prioritize ethical production, or look for a pre-loved dress. Consider renting attire for your wedding party or let them wear outfits from their closet in a cohesive color scheme.

It may be tricky to trim your guest list, but the smaller the head count, the less waste your event will produce. Think about your true VIPs and find a way to include others by sharing a wedding video trailer or a picture of you both after you say “I do.”

8 RE NT WHAT YOU CAN Instead of buying single-use plates and napkins, or decor pieces that will be discarded after your wedding, borrow the items you’ll need. Partner with your caterer and florist or an outside rental vendor. Pretty much anything and everything you may need can be rented.

9 GO LOCAL

Whenever possible, lean on your locale for things like in-season food and flowers. You’ll cut back big-time on carbon emissions. Also consider repurposing florals from your ceremony to use at the reception, and serve a plated meal instead of a buffet to reduce food waste.

10 DONATE WHAT ’S LE FT

Avoid wasting things like food, decor and florals by giving them a second life. Partner with local organizations to donate leftover food to a shelter and flowers to a hospital, and offer up decor on a “buy nothing” Facebook group.

LIGHTBULB MOMENT This couple is pioneering a shift in event lighting—moving it from an energy guzzler to a carbon-neutral decoration—and sharing tips everyone can learn from.

Florida-based lighting designers Jacob and Courtney Towe of Jacob Co Creative are revolutionizing event lighting and hope to inspire colleagues to follow suit in reducing their carbon footprint. Despite being in an industry that requires jetting to far-flung locales for events, the couple is able to cut down their emissions (even going carbon negative!) thanks to careful planning and savvy business practices. They dished on the measures they’ve built into their business and how vendors and to-be-weds alike can adopt these principles. TIP:

GO SOLAR

All of the Towes’ equipment is both wireless and powered by solar

banks, which allows them to fly equipment for large-scale lighting installations to remote locations. Other renewable energy sources like hydroelectric and wind can also be used to make dramatic lighting designs without an oversized carbon footprint, says the couple. TIP:

TRASH TALK Take a good look at your trash—really! Surveying the items they were tossing (mostly zip ties and tape), helped the Towes pivot to reducing their waste.

OF FSET YOUR EMISSIONS

“Carbon neutral means that you are removing the same amount of carbon from the environment that you are producing,” say the Towes. One way of doing this is by purchasing “carbon offsets.” For example, the Towes cancel out emissions by partnering with One Tree Planted, an environmental nonprofit that plants trees when vendors purchase offsets. However,

108

Party on, guilt-free, with solarpowered lights.

the couple actually tries to be carbon negative by planting more trees than is required to negate the carbon their business produces. Couples in the throes of wedding planning can consider adding a budget item for carbon offsets or connect with their planner to discuss implementing carbonreduction measures. TIP:

TIP:

INVEST IN Q UALITY

Opting for more durable equipment is a smart decision that ensures you will be sending broken items to the dump less frequently. “We focus on investing in high-quality products that will last 5, 10, 15 years,” say the Towes. “Not only is that better for the environment, but it also saves our business money.” While investing in lasting inventory is a great step vendors can take towards being green, some equipment is best avoided altogether.

A VO ID G ENER ATORS

When it comes to lighting design, think through the equipment you’ll need and which may require a heavy power draw. “Generators use a lot of money and resources, and are a huge pollutant, so should be avoided whenever possible,” the Towes advise. Instead of installing just a few large light fixtures that need tons of electricity, consider smaller lights sprinkled throughout that will enhance the ambience and can easily be powered renewably. TIP:

C OMMIT FOR T HE LONG HAU L

“This isn’t about this being ‘in,’ or the cool topic for the moment,” the Towes say. “It’s heartbreaking to see tons of trash thrown away at the end of the day.” The couple encourages everyone to consider the lasting impact your wedding can have and to act accordingly. “Don’t let the impact from your wedding be more trash at the dump,” says the couple. “Ultimately, everyone should feel good about the event.”

One of the biggest players in bridal fashion, Pronovias Group, plans to make 50 percent of its collection eco-friendly by 2025.

If sustainability is a key value of your wedding, it can be tough to find green dress options—but that’s about to change. Barcelona-based bridal brand Pronovias Group has launched #WeDoEco, a line of sustainable gowns. The collection consists of two parts: 15 entirely ecofriendly dresses (labeled 360° Eco), plus 24 dresses with sustainable components. “We want to ensure that brides are able to find their dream dress without having to compromise style,” says Alessandra Rinaudo, artistic director of Pronovias Group. Beyond gorgeous gowns, #WeDoEco is part of a long-term commitment to green initiatives, including waste-free manufacturing and sustainable packaging materials. The brand also joined forces with Brides Do Good, a nonprofit organization based in the United Kingdom dedicated to giving pre-loved gowns a second life.

Buying a sustainable wedding dress is another great way to plan a more eco-conscious celebration—and it’s a lot simpler than you might think.

These platforms are using their voices to celebrate eco-conscious nuptials while paving the way for a more renewable wedding industry.

1

Made-to-order clothing generally produces less waste than ready-to-wear clothing. “Our products are made to order, which means we have no excess inventory,” says Marteal Mayer, cofounder of Loulette Bride, a bridal boutique in Brooklyn, New York. However, made-to-order doesn’t always mean eco-friendly. “Check the fabrics, where the gown came from and who made it to be sure,” Mayer says.

2

What a dress is made of goes a long way to determine just how eco-friendly it is. “Focus on fabrics made from recycled waste or plant-based fibers sourced from responsibly managed farms and forests,” says Brenna Simmons, founder of the eco-conscious wedding attire brand Nordeen. Avoid synthetic fabrics, which are usually made from petroleum and are essentially plastic.

CARBON FO OTPRINT: RELATING TO YOU PERSONALLY,

RE NT YOUR ATTIRE One of the biggest problems with the wedding fashion industry is what happens to clothing after the big day. Renting allows you to choose an outfit that can be worn (and loved!) again and again. Rent the Runway has a curated selection of bridal styles. While you won’t find traditional wedding dresses, the site does offer chic white mini dresses, elegant midis and trendy jumpsuits.

7

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH CARBON?

FI ND A DESIGNE R WHO UPCYCLES If reusing a previously worn wedding dress is super important to you—but you can’t seem to find one you love—consider working with a designer who upcycles. “Upcycling vintage fashion is inherently sustainable in that you are helping eliminate waste,” says Melissa Sullivan, founder of Los Angeles bridal atelier Maison Sully, which specializes in reimagined vintage pieces.

FIL MAGAZINE

Peep LAUREN KIMBLE Lauren’s own vegan MyFilMag.com wedding on page 96.

DON’ T DI SCOUNT PRE-LOVE D D R ES S ES Extend the lifespan of something that already exists by reviving a pre-loved dress. “This could be through scouring vintage stores, boutiques or secondhand outlets,” says Simmons. There are many perks to buying pre-loved clothing, but a big one has to be the price. “These options tend to be very affordable,” she says. “The only added costs are for cleaning or tailoring.”

5 Fil Magazine is a vegan event planning and design publication aimed at bringing together the vegan community and the event planning industry. “The spark of inspiration for Fil Magazine came when, after attending a vegan festival, I started to think about how one would go about planning such an event,” recalls Kimble. “I went home to research magazines and websites dedicated to vegan events, and I was disappointed to find there was little to nothing for me to chew on. So I decided to create Fil for people who want to plan unique and memorable vegan experiences.”

ASK ABOUT M ANUFACTURING If an ethically made wedding dress is a big concern, find out as much as possible about the manufacturing process. “If you want to support locally made fashion, ask the designer where they produce to ensure it’s not made at a factory overseas,” advises Simmons. Dresses made in the USA tend to have a smaller carbon footprint—plus, they support the local economy.

GREEN WEDDING GUILD Emily Thomas and Maria Karagiannis created Green Wedding Guild to educate vendors and couples about sustainable wedding practices, encourage sustainability goals and connect couples to vendors that can help them reach these goals. The duo joined forces after feeling discouraged by the lack of sustainable initiatives in the wedding industry. “We hope that couples are inspired to think more intentionally about their wedding plans and consider ways to make their wedding day not only beautiful and memorable, but less impactful on the environment,” explain the founders.

BUY FROM BRANDS THAT GI VE BACK Some brands practice sustainability by donating a portion of sales to different charities or environmental efforts. It’s a great sign that the business values ecoresponsibility, but you should definitely still doublecheck that their dresses are ethically sourced. “Research is the most important starting point with any product you buy,” says Mayer. — N A O I M H O ’ H A R E

After a while, photographing people who live on $5 a day and returning to the United States to photograph $50,000 weddings didn’t sit right with me. I wanted to use my talent, voice and experience to bridge the gap. Ethical Weddings is an online resource that provides couples with a beginner’s guide for how to use their wedding to do good.”

HOW TO

PLAN LIKE AN INFLUENCER Jules Acree (née Hunt) and her husband, Andrew Acree, planned a green wedding weekend complete with dozens of refreshing details (including a giant Slip ’N Slide and a custom-made, eco-friendly wedding dress). “It was a no-brainer for us because those are the values we live by at home,” she says. When it came to eco-friendly wedding planning, Acree’s first priority was finding a venue that already valued sustainability. As a result, she and Andrew decided to wed in Costa Rica at Kinkara, a luxury eco-resort and wellness center. The property practices sustainability at every turn—from banning single-use plastics to using solar power. “It was exciting for us to find a venue that lives and breathes its values,” she says. But Acree’s effort to minimize waste didn’t stop there. When it came to their stationery, the couple bucked tradition by skipping save-the-dates and then opted for wedding invitations printed on post-consumer recycled paper. Additionally, the couple went with online RSVPs to cut down on paper waste. Acree says if she had planned a local wedding, she would have tried to rent plants for the event. However, because of her destination venue, her florist used all organic and sustainably sourced flowers from a small local farm. Thoughtfully sourcing your flowers is not only great for the environment, but it’s also a great way to support small businesses near your wedding venue, says Acree.

GREEN:

After the celebration, Jules and Andrew donated their wedding flowers to nearby hospitals, churches and nursing homes. “It felt good to do that instead of just composting them,” Acree says. “Donating your flowers is a simple way to make your wedding more

eco-friendly—plus, you’ll instantly brighten someone else’s day.” When asked her advice on wedding planning, Acree encourages couples to focus on joint priorities. “You see all of these beautiful weddings with so many gorgeous details,” she says. “But as much as I love details, it’s key to get real about what’s important to you. As a couple, we wanted our wedding to reflect who we are, and with the help of some incredible vendors, we had a mindful, lowwaste wedding that was beyond our wildest dreams.” — MAD DY S I M S

ECO-WED

Minimizing your wedding’s eco-footprint doesn’t have to mean scrapping paper details altogether. You may think planning an ecofriendly wedding means paper details are a no-go. But that’s simply not the case. Read on for tips and ideas on how your paper correspondence (signs, programs and more!) can still have a spot in Earth-friendly nuptials.

112

USE RECYCLED PAPER Did you know that every ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, the energy equivalent of 380 gallons of oil, and keeps almost 60 pounds of pollutants out of the atmosphere? Well, it does, according to Ariel Dekovic, coauthor of 365 Ways to Save the Earth. But keep in mind that not all recycled paper has the same positive impact on our planet. There’s actually a difference between 100 percent recycled paper and 100 percent postconsumer recycled paper. Companies can call paper items they produce 100 percent recycled if they use scraps from a tree they cut down. However, 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper means that only materials that have served their intended use—and would otherwise be sent to the trash—are involved in making the paper.

SUPPORT REFORESTATION Do a little digging and partner with companies that not only produce pretty invitations, but give back to Mother Earth as well. Paper Culture, for example, plants one tree for every order placed to help support reforestation and

RENEWABLE ENERGY:

21FALL_FEAT_Sustainability.L [P]_12847.indd 112

minimize its carbon footprint. To help take some of the guesswork out of researching reputable stationers, you can also pay attention to what certifications they have obtained. The Knot Invitations’ recycled option, for example, is FSC certified—meaning it has a stamp of approval from the Forest Stewardship Council— and produced with Green-e certified wind-generated electricity and renewable energy credits.

EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE INKS Asking questions of your potential stationery partners is the best way to know what they can provide and whether they’re able to make some planet-friendly changes for you. When it comes to ink, inquire about the possibility of using soy- or vegetable-based inks as a greener option.

sites even allow you to create a custom QR code that includes a petite monogram in the middle of the design. Pro tip: You really only need one program for every couple, not one per person.

UPCYCLE SIGNAGE Day-of signage doesn’t have to be paper. Scour thrift stores and antique markets for on-theme trinkets, from lanterns and pottery urns to silver trays and picture frames—all that can be repurposed as wedding signage. You can even splurge on bespoke calligraphy to support small vendors.

DO A GUT CHECK Ask yourself: Do I feel good about my stationery plan? Do my purchases leave the earth better off ? Making a few small eco-minded swaps will go a long way.

CONSOLIDATE Instead of including multiple sheets of paper in your invitation suite, consider sending a main invitation card and including just one insert that directs guests to your wedding website for all the extra weekend deets. Additionally, for any guests invited to multiple prewedding events, send the invites for all celebrations together in one package.

UTILIZE QR CODES Instead of printing a full booklet wedding program, consider single cards with a QR code that redirects attendees to a digitized rundown of the ceremony. Many

CONSCIOUS CLOTHES The sustainable fashion blogger behind the platform The Conscious Brunette embraced slow fashion for her elopement. After the pandemic forced Elizabeth and her fiancé Erik to cancel their destination wedding in Santorini, Greece, the couple decided to stop waiting and simply get married. Once they made the decision to elope, they knew there were some non-negotiables: “We wanted our dog Bailey there, we wanted to celebrate our love after a particularly tough year and we wanted it to be sustainable,” Elizabeth says. “My dress was made to order from Odylyne the Ceremony, and I rented bridal accessories like a white vegan fur coat. Additionally, Erik’s wedding band was consciously made from recycled, eco-friendly rose gold from Juste. Luckily, we are planning a sequel wedding so I’m excited to implement more of our eco-values into our big day!” ELIZABETH HARRINGTON @TheConsciousBrunette Jacksonville, FL

Q+A

LEAVE NO TRACE

Moab-based wedding photographers Abbi and Callen Hearne are transforming the way couples tie the knot in nature.

Q:

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO USE YOUR PLATFORM FOR SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION? The past five years have been a wild ride for outdoor spaces all around the world. Overall, we see this as a positive thing—more people falling in love with the outdoors who can become advocates for the spaces. That being said, we’ve seen some negative effects of this popularity, including people destroying fragile areas for cool photos, leaving trash behind on hikes and events like abandoned campfires causing millions of dollars of destruction and even lives lost. For us, a major turning point was when more photographers began shooting weddings in our home of Moab, Utah. They weren’t aware of the fragile soil here that can be destroyed with a single footstep off the trail. We’d see photos online of photographers intentionally posing couples in what they probably thought was just a field of dirt but was actually the 300-year-old living soil crust that holds the entire desert together. Seeing that prompted us to start talking more about how we must respect the places we visit and how it’s our responsibility to know these things before going to these places.

Q:

WHAT DOES THE PHRASE “LEAVE NO TRACE” MEAN? To put it simply, Leave No Trace is the idea of leaving nature better than you found it! Making sure your hike, photo shoot or adventure doesn’t cause damage to the land, plants or others who are also enjoying the land. LNT is actually an organization that has created seven principles around this concept: plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife and be considerate of other visitors.

21FALL_FEAT_Sustainability.L [P]_12847.indd 113

Q:

WHAT ARE BIG DOS AND DON’TS FOR TYING THE KNOT AT A NATIONAL PARK? The LNT principles truly cover it, but beyond that, couples need to realize that even though it’s your wedding day, you still need to respect the land, the local regulations and other visitors. You can have an amazing day without going past barriers. A few huge no-no’s we’ve seen are people throwing their bouquet off a cliff (this can not only be dangerous to people and animals below, but it’s also not safe for the environment to leave non-native flora); playing loud music that changes the experience of fellow hikers; or people taking over a certain spot and thinking they have the right to it over other visitors just because they’re in wedding clothes. It’s also important to always get the proper permits. Make sure to prepare ahead of time, know the regulations so they aren’t a surprise day-of and be flexible, because Mother Nature is always in control.

Q:

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS? Dive into why you care about this, because the more you care, the more motivated you’ll be to make sustainable changes. Photography in itself isn’t necessarily an unsustainable practice, but implementing small changes—like following LNT principles, getting the right permits and reducing travel—can make a big difference. For example, we book elopements and our travel in blocks to reduce driving or flying back and forth between places to reduce our personal footprint. Learning about things we’ve been irresponsible with in the past can help us become a better and more sustainable wedding vendor. If all of us improve just 10 percent, it will have a much bigger impact than a handful of us putting in 90 percent!

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a skirt that flares out in—you guessed it—an A shape. Consider it a halfway point between a sheath and a ball gown.

Va-va-voom. This sultry silhouette has a fitted bodice, waist and hips, and dramatically flares out at the knee. It’s a great option if you want to show off your curves.

What a sheath creating a semi-full dress lacks in volume, shape (like the bell it makes up for in of a trumpet) without versatility—it works with nearly every fabric. any extra volume.

Empire A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.

MUST-READ GOWN SHOPPING TIP S S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.

H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

2 The water is so clear in The Bahamas that divers experience visibility of up to 200 feet. 3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 4

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9

Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane ride from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike.

With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks. 9

4

If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise.

5

10 Dance the night away in “irie” oblivion to live soca, reggae or calypso at Harbour Lights or hot spot Red Door Lounge.

First made more than 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors.

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago. 2

Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7

Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant. 9

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your partner loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds. 3

6

To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay. 8

While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour. 10

Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves that have never seen the light of day! SHUTTERSTOCK

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

5 The Blue Lagoon was filmed in Port Antonio, called the “most exquisite port on Earth.” It’s a less-developed gem on the northeast side of the island.

LAST LOOK

Despite so many roadblocks, we were elated to overcome every obstacle and have our special day. During the pandemic, we were living in two different countries separated by travel bans and a time zone difference of eight hours. After months of uncertainty and long-distance planning, we were so happy to finally get married. Remember: As long as you work together as a team, you can overcome even the most imposing of challenges.
