Turning moments i nto
memories for 40 years
What creates the perfect moment? It’s pristine white-sand beaches enveloped by the bluest waters, where couples can play, or chill. It’s luxurious sanctuaries made for romance at water’s edge, or directly over the water. It’s a mouthwatering gourmet creation and a creatively crafted cocktail. But, most of all, the perfect moment is found in the details, an art that we’ve perfected with our Luxury Included ® Honeymoon. For 40 years, love has always been at the heart of all we do, because at Sandals ® Resorts, Love is All You Need.

EDITOR’S NOTE
P R E VA I L S Despite an ongoing global pandemic and heavy world news, love charges on. More than 2.5 million couples are set to say “I do” this year—the biggest number in recent history— with most of the celebrations kicking off this summer. If you’re one of those lucky couples tying the knot, we’ve got you covered. In the market for the perfect dress? Let your enneagram lead the way (p. 44). Our annual Registry Awards (p. 55) features 44 of our trusted picks for your wish list. (See what our editors are eyeing below.) When decision fatigue sets in, we have tips for taking conflict in
stride and using it to strengthen your relationship (p. 64). We continue our wellness crusade (visit TheKnot.com/wellness) with an essay about wedding planning with type 1 diabetes, tips from real couples on de-stressing while wedding planning and nonalcoholic libations for your bach party. If you’re attending a celebration this summer and feel a bit rusty on your wedding etiquette, you’re not alone— it’s been a minute. Our Ultimate Guest Guide (p. 68) is the perfect refresher, with tips from navigating RSVPs to what “cocktail attire” really means. It’s the summer of love, and we’re ready for it.
Brianna and Meaghan’s rooftop wedding (p. 104) was as much a celebration of love as a reunion of friends finally reunited after more than a year apart.

Along with that, I’m enjoying seeing dried and preserved elements grow in prominence. It’s great how people are working to find more environmentally friendly ways to make these types of products. Wedding vending machines! Yes, vending machines at the venue can add a bit of spunk to the big day—hear me out. First, skip a signature cocktail and instead book a machine that dispenses singleserve bottles of champagne. Give guests tokens at the reception, and they can help themselves to mini sips. Next, offer up an essentials machine for anything your guests may need as the party continues. Pack this display, which should be free to guests, with emergency items like flip-flops, Band-Aids and fashion tape. But also have some fun and include things like Mad Libs–style speeches guests can grab and fill in for last-minute, offthe-cuff remarks.

To start, write down your love story. Find the common thread and build off of that. What do you like to do? What music do you listen to? What do you like to eat? It’s important that every decision you come to makes you happy. Don’t do things just because you’ve seen them before. Maybe that means you serve a beloved dish at dinner; you can even write a short explanation on your menu card about why you’re serving it. Lately, I’ve seen couples breaking the mold by hosting epic weekend-long experiences. Instead of feeling limited to just a ceremony and reception, couples are making their weddings uniquely their own by planning an amazing welcome event, rehearsal dinner and an activity for guests the morning of the ceremony. They’re also including an after-party and a farewell brunch. At one event, we even planned a trip to the farmers market because that’s what the couple loved to do! For wine lovers, a postwedding drive to Sonoma to visit vineyards is another fun idea. Couples are telling their love stories through these experiences—doing what they love with those closest to them.

When wedding planning gets to be too much, how do you unwind? We try to take a step back and encourage ourselves to enjoy the process as much as possible. Even though wedding planning is a lot of work, and almost like a full-time job, we remind ourselves that this only happens once in your life, so it’s important to enjoy the journey. In addition to focusing on mindfulness if we’re feeling overwhelmed, we’ll watch a movie or go out to dinner to relax and recharge.

Is there a moment from the wedding day you look back on fondly because of the joy it brought you? On the morning of the big day, it was so much fun to finally meet all of the vendors we had been planning with for over two years. It’s wild that you spend so long making decisions together and choosing the different pieces of your wedding puzzle, but you don’t actually see your vendors as one cohesive party until the day of the event.
Dallas
Was there something you stressed over that, in hindsight, wasn’t as important as you initially thought? We were stressed about how a destination wedding would impact our guests. We were worried that people wouldn’t make it or might complain. But we have experienced a totally different response. Everyone seriously can’t wait to celebrate with us. And hiring a fullservice event planner to bring the event to life has truly been the biggest blessing logistically.
MEGAN MACE + WITT MCKAY @MeganMaceMcKay Memphis, TN
Were there any surprises during the wedding planning journey you wish someone had warned you about? No one talks about the weird lull in the middle of wedding planning where you’ve made the big decisions, but can’t focus on the small details quite yet. Our advice is to enjoy that lull. Your engagement season goes by so fast, and that’s the only time you can enjoy it without any planning responsibilities.
Dallas
What tips do you have for couples planning their wedding who may find it impacts their well-being? Your wedding isn’t a deadline. It’s a celebration. Don’t get the two confused. In moments where we found ourselves stressed, we turned to the very charming show Ted Lasso on Apple TV+. It is sure to brighten anyone’s day. And for us, making the seating chart was a task that brought us joy, as it helped us visualize the day, relieving any tension.

What advice do you have for to-be-weds who find themselves caught up in the minutiae of wedding planning? It’s not worth stressing over the smallest of details. You can’t cloud your thoughts with how the napkins will be folded, where guests will be spending the majority of their time at the reception and so on. It’s easy to get lost in the details, but focusing on the bigger picture is more important.

What advice can you offer couples in the throes of planning who feel burnt out? Don’t over-exert yourself to the point of forgetting to take care of yourself. Stay on top of your personal habits such as journaling, therapy and workouts, and don’t forget to sleep, eat and drink water. We know that sounds simple, but it’s so easy to forget the little things when overly stressed. Also, lean on your partner and remember that the reason you’re planning a wedding is because of your love.

What tips do you have for finding joy in the midst of the planning journey? The anticipation leading up to our wedding and knowing that we had found each other brought us joy. If you’re having trouble finding joy amid wedding planning, our advice would be to try to keep your mind in a positive headspace. In the end, everything will fall into place and work out exactly how it was meant to be.
Los Angeles
What part of your wedding weekend delighted you the most? Both of our families arrived a few days early to help set up for the event and put together lastminute details. Being able to be with them all, as they’re from all over the country, was a special time. It helped us unwind a bit and took the load off of our shoulders. Those few last days leading up to the big day were some of the happiest moments of our whole wedding.

What’s your best piece of advice for to-be-weds struggling with the weight of wedding planning? Remember it’s about your love. Big weddings are nice, but if you worry too much about how everyone else feels, you’re going to lose sight of the two of you. Write down the top three most important things for both of you, and focus on them. Also, we’re big proponents of starting the planning early, so you don’t have to rush.
Los Angeles
Looking back, is there something you worried about that wasn’t as big of a deal as you initially thought? We spent so much time worrying if people would show up. But once the save-the-dates were sent out, people started telling us how excited they were for the wedding. We can’t wait to spend this day with our friends and family. Even now when we find ourselves worrying over other wedding tasks, we make it a priority to go on dates to spend quality time together to relax.

What helped you decompress the most amid the stress of planning? Having an amazing, hands-on planner helped a ton. But in the moments that we did stress out, we had to give ourselves breaks. We would set a time and day of the week to focus on the wedding instead of letting it consume us. When one of us got overwhelmed, we would do things like go to the gym or the park to relieve stress.

ESSAY
TO MY PATH THE ALTAR WITH T1D
Ariana Frayer is a bride-to-be and type 1 diabetic. She’s also a lover of the outdoors and small-business owner designing merch to inspire those with T1D through Cup of OJ Creative. Here, she opens up about planning a wedding while living with diabetes—without letting her chronic illness become an unwanted guest.
26
i
was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 10 and had no idea how it would impact my life. My condition means that my body doesn’t produce enough insulin, which helps blood sugar enter your cells to get used for energy. Without insulin, my blood sugar can get too high or too low and can be a huge risk to my health. As a result, I inject myself with insulin multiple times a day and constantly monitor my blood sugar. Now, at 28, I’m thriving as a smallbusiness owner while documenting my journey with T1D on social media. My mission is not to let my chronic illness stop me from doing what I love, like hiking and being active every day. I like music festivals, going out with friends and having fun—and I never want my health dictating what I can or can’t do. My partner Adam (who I met on Twitter!) and I are getting married in September 2022 in Massachusetts. Just like I share my life with T1D online, I want to share my wedding planning with the world as well. Wedding dress shopping got me thinking more about I’VE ALWAYS showcasing my health FIT MY journey on the wedding DIABETES INTO day. While dress shopping, MY LIFE, NOT my future mother-in-law THE OTHER started snapping pictures WAY AROUND. of me trying on dresses. MY WEDDING WILL BE MUCH She said, “I’m going to get THE SAME. the Dexcom in a photo, since it’s visible through
22SUM_FOB_Essay.L [P]_321051.indd 26
the dress.” I hadn’t considered how you might see the outline of my Dexcom monitor, which measures my blood glucose levels and tracks them via an app on my phone. But as she took photos of the outline through the fabric, I began pondering the role I wanted my condition to play in my wedding. I ultimately fell in love with an A-line dress (with pockets for snacks) that won’t necessarily show off my Dexcom. But I do want to celebrate my health journey as part of my wedding. I want getting-ready pictures where you can see my Dexcom. I want to remember, years from now, the role T1D played at the time in my life when I said “I do.” Beyond my dress, T1D will affect other decisions around my big day. I inject myself with insulin six or seven times a day, usually in my arms, and if I do it in the same place, scar tissue builds up. In the months before the wedding, I’m going to inject my insulin in different parts of my body to reduce inflammation. That’s not something many to-be-weds would have to consider during their prewedding wellness routine. Getting a facial? Sure. But as a T1D bride, this is something I needed to plan out. Food is another big planning priority. I’m going to schedule what I will eat and when. I’ll start with a breakfast that has
substantial carbohydrates to keep me going. One of my bridesmaids is also a type 1 diabetic, and I’ve appointed her my official glucose monitor for the day. She’ll have my phone to track my blood sugar, so I don’t have to worry about it, handing me a Capri Sun if I begin to dip. Lastly, to ensure I can enjoy myself at the reception, I’m having a low-carb cocktail as my signature sip. My biggest concern is that the ceremony goes smoothly and without interruption. I would hate to have to stop everything to chug a juice box—though it would be very on-brand for me. I’ve always fit my diabetes into my life, not the other way around. My hope is for my wedding day to be the same. Will my blood sugar go low at some point? Probably. Is my sugar going be perfect? Probably not. As long as I don’t let my blood sugar levels cloud my entire experience, that’s what matters to me. Obviously, your diabetes is your health, and you should take care of it (with a physician’s guidance). Even though your blood sugar may fluctuate, you may misplace the rings, and Aunt Sally may be late—it’s just one day. I’m not going to beat myself up, but enjoy every moment.

FROM THE RED CARPET TO THE AISLE, ROSS MATHEWS REFLECTS ON FINDING LOVE DURING THE PANDEMIC, NAVIGATING LOSS AND NOW, PLANNING A WEDDING WITH PURPOSE. 29
REPORTING LIVE WITH ROSS The to-be-weds are living what they describe as a fairy tale. “I met this extraordinary, smart man who loves me and whom I love,” says Ross. t’s the tail end of the Omicron wave of COVID-19 in New York City when I greet Ross Mathews and Wellinthon Garcia over video. It’s a cozy night in. A ring light is reflected in their window; laundry, in mine. Ross is seated to Welly’s left—hair coiffed, he’s fresh off work. Welly is in a cream turtleneck sweater; his demeanor is confident and calming. It’s something Ross noticed right off the bat when they met in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Welly’s friends had stood him up for breakfast. “I was hungry, so I ended up going down for a breakfast burrito,” he says. When he brought it poolside, there was a greater distraction: a nearby pair whispering and staring. “I didn’t know who they were,” he laughs. “It was weird because they kept looking at me.” In fact, Ross and a girlfriend were in cahoots over the man reading by the pool. Some eye contact later, Mathews (whose breakout role as “Ross the Intern” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno launched his ››

TV career) sauntered across the rooftop to introduce himself. “He said, ‘Hi, I’m Ross Mathews,’” chuckles Welly, who is clueless when it comes to pop culture and didn’t know who Ross Mathews was. “I replied, ‘Hi, I’m Dr. Wellinthon Garcia.’” Welly, an educational administrator, previously worked in Big Pharma. (“I wasn’t a fan of pharmaceutical sales for moral reasons,” he says.) He then pivoted to a think tank as a research associate. “One day, I was taking the subway and

SCREW NORMAL! WONDERFUL! there was an ad that read, ‘Do you remember your first-grade teacher’s name?’ And I did. I applied and got into the New York City Teaching Fellows Program. That launched my career in education.” Born in the Dominican LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID Republic, Welly arrived Ross and Welly dated via Zoom in the United States at age during the pandemic. five without speaking a Welly: Jacket, Paisley & Gray for Men’s Wearhouse; shirt, Giorgio Armani; word of English. “I tell Ross Ross: tuxedo and shirt, Giorgio Armani; brooch, David Yurman all the time that education is a field where every career has to pass through you before people become who they are,” he says. “We’re building society.” That’s emerged as their overall purpose as a couple. Both acknowledge the scrutiny that comes with a public romance, yet they have experienced the other extreme. Raised in the farm town of Mount Vernon, Washington, Ross didn’t see himself in love stories. “That’s what drives us, and that’s why we’re sharing our story,” he reflects. “We don’t need any more attention. Wellinthon doesn’t seek it—he’s an educator. But we chose, purposefully, to talk about our wedding because we didn’t have that example growing up. So if we can, by announcing our

engagement on The Drew Barrymore Show or sharing our love story on the cover of The Knot? These are mainstream [outlets]. We know there will be kids out there who look at this and see it as perfectly wonderful. Screw normal! Wonderful. And that they can’t wait to find their person. That’s the goal.” Weeks after they met, the world shut down. “I went on a tour for my second book, Name Drop, and I was all over the country until March,” says Ross, who lived in California at the time. Welly was in New York. “He would visit me in cities, whether it was Chicago or Philly or Miami. And then bam! Everything shut down. We went from March until almost August without seeing each other. We dated over Zoom and FaceTime. We put the effort in: We’d do Taco Tuesdays or watch the same movie and be like, ‘3-2-1-play.’ We would find different ways to go on dates. In a way, it actually forced us
3/22/22 4:06 PM
to have deep conversations and get to know each other in a way that we wouldn’t have if we were just, you know, hitting it.” We all laugh. They are a classic example of how opposites attract. “He has a Ph.D. in education and I have a Ph.D. in pop culture,” says Ross. “It’s very, very different. But there’s just such value in what we both do. Our worlds are so completely different that I’m in awe of him every day.” Ross has risen to pop culture fame in the last two decades, from The Tonight Show to stints on Chelsea Lately and RuPaul’s Drag Race. It was actress Drew Barrymore who played an unlikely role in their relationship. “Drew has been instrumental in our love story,” says Ross. “I came to New York to visit Wellinthon, and she asked me to come on her show for a day.” The production team then requested he return a week later, then again to stay on for the season. “We were like, ‘I guess this means I’m supposed to be here.’ So we got an apartment. I don’t know that we would have been on such a fast trajectory if Drew hadn’t given me work in New York.” She’s also been a confidante in the planning process. “I have immense guilt that people are flying to our wedding. Drew said, ‘Just do it where you want to do it, and the people who are supposed to be there will come,’” says Ross. “I just want to make sure people have a party when they’re there.” This includes Barrymore, who is also a founder of Flower Beauty and will be a flower girl at the wedding. “It just came up as we were talking about the wedding [on the show]. And she was like, ‘Well, who’s the flower girl?’ I was like, ‘You want to do it?’ And she was like, ‘Wait, are you being serious?’” recalls Ross. “And I was like, ‘Wait, are you being serious?’” She was serious. “Drew and I talk about everything on the show, whatever the hot-button issues are, including relationships. We really go deep into them,” says Ross. “We challenge each other on our thoughts, feelings and who we want to be now. Drew’s had public relationships, and she holds nothing back. What I love about her is she’s the kind of friend who will give you the real truth. She’s the friend you would call if you did something bad and needed help covering it up. She would just be there, no questions asked: ‘I brought a shovel. What are we doing?’” The couple also signed on Michael Russo as their event planner. Russo—known for planning Shark Tank judge Robert Herjavec’s wedding in 2016—heard about their engagement and reached out over Instagram. Their mutual friend Carson Kressley, who emceed the Herjavec wedding, attested to Russo’s talents. “He just sang his praises,” says Ross. “I never thought I’d be the type of person who had a wedding planner. That always seemed like something a Kardashian would have.” The wedding events will be an extension of their West Coast lifestyle. “When we’re not in New York, we live in Palm Springs, which is a happy hour lifestyle. We are a caftan people. We are a poolside people. We live like active senior citizens,” Ross laughs. “So, I want to infuse part of our life in Palm Springs into the wedding.” He pauses and adds, “I wouldn’t be shocked if the night before there was some sort of karaoke party. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the day after the wedding, there was a drag bingo brunch. We love a really gay activity like that. And we want to bring that sense of fun into our wedding.” ››

every possible way and hope that somehow they are there.” “We’ll have photos of late loved ones placed around, and we’re incorporating family heirlooms into the ceremony,” says Russo. “They will be surrounded by family on their wedding day.” After they both lost their mothers within two years, the couple bonded over the emotional fallout. “When Ross went through it first, I wanted to make sure I was [with him] the whole time,” says Welly. “Then the same happened to me.” In September 2021, Welly’s mother died. “I was very much like, ‘I need to process this.’ I need to understand what’s happening,” he recalls. “I got to the point where I said to Ross, ‘Babe, I think I really need to see a grief counselor.’ Now I share with him the things [the therapist and I] talk about in those sessions. It’s been cathartic and therapeutic in the sense that he’s gaining from what I’m sharing. And vice versa.” “It’s hard when someone you love is going through that kind of pain, because you want to fix it,” Ross sighs. “You can’t fix it. So all you can do is be there. I could be there so he didn’t fall, and he was there so I didn’t fall.” When you lose a parent, they say, you join a kind of secret club. “If anyone reading this [has lost a parent], you know you aren’t just dented, scratched or damaged goods. You also know something that other people don’t,” Ross elaborates. “You know how great it is that you’re here. You know how precious it is that you are alive. Not to be a blind optimist, but I have to find that joy in it. I know how grateful I am to be here and what I want to do with my time here.” In their New York City living room, Ross proposed in February 2021. “I had coordinated over 50 people from across the world to be on Zoom: friends, colleagues,” Ross recalls. “Welly was running late. When we finally opened [the call], there were 50 people waiting for us. He just yells, ‘Pam from work? What’s Pam doing here?’ He was so confused.” Welly at one point was so overwhelmed by the gesture that he left the room just as Ross was about to drop to one knee. “I started crying. I was elated and just relieved,” Welly says. “One thing both of us have in common is that we didn’t think it was possible. I grew up thinking that I would never be able to get married, because we didn’t have the right to marry when I was a kid. So I needed that moment to walk away from the scene and reflect.” Moments later, he returned and tearfully declared, “Yes.” Shortly after this piece is published, the couple will have another pinch-me moment when they exchange vows in their dream destination wedding. “A gay wedding is simply a wedding,” says Russo. “Have you ever heard someone say they’re attending a hetero wedding? It’s a wedding.” It’s their wedding.
33
“Our approach is classic and chic with a tropical, festive flair,” Russo elaborates over text. Close to 100 guests, from all walks of life, will converge in Mexico for the couple’s wedding week. “I wanted a chicken finger buffet with a barbecue sauce fountain,” gushes Ross. “I was told no. I guess the barbecue fountain isn’t COVID-appropriate, now that I think about it. But we’re planning the menu. I’m hyper-focused on the appetizers and Welly’s more focused on the seated dinner options.” When the weekend is over, the couple simply wants their guests to feel valued. “I want them to understand how important they are to us,” reflects Ross. “And how important our wedding is, in general. This is for us. This is the one time we’ll ever do this.” Just as the pandemic hurtled into summer 2020, Ross’ mother, Gaye, died from breast cancer; 16 months later, Welly’s mother, Marianela, died. It wasn’t Ross’ first time grieving a direct family member; he lost his father when he was 24. “She was pretty far gone by then,” Ross says of his mom. “When I showed her a picture of Wellinthon, I said, ‘Mom, I met somebody.’ She looked at his picture and said, ‘I think I know him.’ And I said, ‘I think you do, I think you do.’ Maybe she could have pictured this, you know?” “My mom actually got to meet Ross,” recalls Welly. Their sit-down involved homemade guacamole—heaping mounds of ripe avocados. “She was one of those people who, if you said you wanted something, she would not only do it, but she would do it in abundance. I’m glad my mom got to interact with him. Her approval of Ross meant the world. I don’t think I’d be as overjoyed with everything that’s happening if my mom wasn’t happy with him.” “We loved each other,” affirms Ross. “I didn’t speak Spanish. She didn’t speak English. But we had great conversations.” “It’s such a time of great joy right now,” says Ross. “Like, ‘Hello, it’s the fairy tale.’ I met this extraordinary, smart man who loves me and [whom] I love. And we’re going to proclaim it in front of everyone we love. But there are going to be empty seats there, and those empty seats are so symbolic— of the holes in my soul because my parents are both gone.” When someone is recovering from a traumatic experience, psychologists say acknowledging your feelings is an initial step toward healing. “I want there to be actual seats that are empty—space for them,” reflects Ross. “I think about [my loss and my wedding] when it’s just me. I get very, very, very sad that they’re not going to be there. I would’ve loved an RSVP from them. They would’ve had such a freakin’ blast at this wedding too. My dad was hilarious. My mom would’ve loved Welly and been involved in every part of the planning. The goal is just going to be to honor them at the wedding in

Creating a multicultural home doesn’t necessarily mean you have to fill your home with quaint and traditional artifacts like a museum. I recommend a nuanced and layered approach of finding subtle opportunities to introduce your culture and complement your existing style. If you’re a fan of farmhouse chic, you could accent a rustic dining set with a table runner that’s made with traditional textiles. If you want to create a sleek, modern home, perhaps you look for significant shapes and symbols from your own culture, then incorporate those design elements. Ultimately, it’s about asking yourself this simple question: “Is it beautiful and meaningful?”

PLATINUM
Besides the fact that yellow gold is on trend, the pure-gold look has plenty of other appeal. It’s easier to clean than white or rose gold and is a fairly hypoallergenic metal as well.
Yellow gold is turned into white gold when plated with rhodium (a white metal). If you don’t want to splurge on platinum, white gold is less pricey, though it may need to be replated over time.
This pink-tinted metal is gold with an added copper alloy. The more copper alloy in the metal, the deeper the rosy tones. Due to its pink hue, this metal symbolizes love.
A hypoallergenic white metal known for its strength, platinum is usually 95 percent pure. Its density makes it very durable, meaning it will keep your center stone secure and protected.

Brittany Thomas is a certified Enneagram coach. She’s the founder of Enneagram Explained, an online platform that connects people with resources to grow using the Enneagram system.
W HA T I S YOUR ENNEA G R A M T Y PE ? If you’re new to the Enneagram system, Thomas breaks down exactly what you need to know. “The Enneagram is a personality typing system with nine basic types,” she explains. “Your type is determined by your core motivation instead

of your traits—and unlike many other typing systems, it does not just put you in one box.” A free online Enneagram quiz will give you a main number, as well as your wings, which are additional traits you may possess from adjacent Enneagram numbers. “Not everyone matches one Enneagram type exactly,” she says. “Understanding your unique type can help you learn why you are the way you are while offering insight on how to grow and live more fully.” So, how does this tie into your day? “Wedding planning can be stressful, but the Enneagram system provides information for how each type acts under pressure, along with how best to work through it,” Thomas explains. TLDR: If searching for a wedding dress is proving to be a difficult planning task, understanding your Enneagram number can actually be a major benefit. To help you find your dream dress, we’ve rounded up the best picks for each Enneagram type.

t’s no secret that finding the perfect wedding dress can feel daunting, especially with so many dreamy designs on the market. And while you can find inspiration just about anywhere, from your venue to your color palette or your Instagram feed, narrowing down your choices certainly isn’t easy. Another thought? Your Enneagram number. Much like your Zodiac sign or Myers-Briggs type, your Enneagram number reveals quite a bit about your personality—and it can even be used to define your personal style. We tapped Brittany Thomas, Enneagram coach and founder of the website Enneagram Explained, to give us the scoop on all nine types, along with the dress style best suited for each.
THE REFORMER According to the Enneagram Institute, Type Ones are perfectionists with strong principles. “Type Ones tend to want to follow traditions, rules and order,” Thomas says. “They have a core desire to be good and right.” As such, you need a classic wedding silhouette that will never go out of style. This clean A-line gown with a simple strapless neckline and covered buttons that go all the way down the back will stand the test of time. ANNE BARGE

THE ACHIEVER Type Threes are wildly driven by success, and they dream of becoming inspirational figures. “Type Threes have a core desire to be valued and admired,” Thomas says, noting that this type needs everything in their life to be top quality. It’s no surprise, then, that you should wear a luxe gown from a renowned designer. We suggest a regal high-neck, long-sleeved ball gown dripping in intricate beadwork. Reminiscent of celeb brides like Grace Kelly and Paris Hilton, this design fits your desire to be the best of the best.

You’ll feel extra-calm on your day knowing you can keep the essentials close by.
THE INDIVIDUALIST Type Fours are one-of-a-kind—and, according to Thomas, you fear being just like everyone else. “Type Fours want to find deep meaning and individual significance.” You need a wedding dress that doesn’t fit the mold, and this curve-skimming sheath with a plunging neckline, sexy cutouts and a feather skirt is just that.

The Enneagram Institute notes that Type Fives are “visionary pioneers.” You’re innovative and curious, earning you the title of “The Investigator.” Thomas says that Type Fives tend to heavily research topics, so there’s a good chance you’ve been deep in the search for your dream dress. Enter, this whimsical ball gown. With sheer ruffles juxtaposed with silk organza, this design pushes the envelope just enough to fulfill your creative tastes.

Fun-loving Type Sevens have a fear of being boxed in. Known as “The Enthusiast,” you’re all about finding joy in the little things. “Sevens do not want limitations; rather, they want whatever promises them the most happiness,” Thomas says. As such, your ideal wedding outfit should be a conversation starter—something completely unexpected and eye-catching, like this jumpsuit with allover geometric beading.

If there’s one Enneagram number that’s perfect for rocking an of-the-moment trend, it’s Eight. “Eights have a core desire to be independent,” says Thomas, noting that this type also has a strong and bold personality. Type Eights are self-confident, powerful and decisive, which means you’ll have no problem committing to a flashy style like this gown, with trendy puff sleeves and a high slit.
THE PEACEMAKER
Enneagram Nines are creative and easygoing. “People who are this type want to be at peace and connected to others because they fear conflict,” says Thomas. This free-spirited personality type is all about the boho aesthetic. You’d be most comfortable in something laid-back like this slip dress with back streamers, which will allow you to look effortlessly cool on your day.

Going Pro LOOKING TO SERVE SERIOUS FACE ON YOUR DAY? WE GOT YOU. WE TAPPED THE EXPERTS TO GET THE DEETS ON THE HOTTEST PROFESSIONAL SKIN CARE TREATMENTS OUT THERE—PLUS HOW TO FACTOR THEM INTO YOUR WEDDING TIMELINE AND BUDGET. BY SHELLEY BROWN
i
EXPERT TIP To reduce swelling and bruising after getting neuromodulators or fillers, ice the injection site, lay off the booze and avoid vigorous exercise for two days.
n-office visits and elective procedures are back, and that means one thing: You’re free to inject, peel, laser and otherwise professionally refresh your skin like it’s 2019 again. Below, a breakdown of the editorapproved skin care treatments—from injectables and peels to noninvasive facials—to consider before your “I dos.”
NEUROMODULATORS HOW THEY WORK: A neuromodulator is any substance that interferes with the transmission of signals between neurons. In dermatology, neuromodulators are primarily made of Botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin that relaxes facial muscles. You might know some of the most popular ones by their brand names: Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin. “We use neuromodulators to inhibit nerve transmission,” says Marnie Nussbaum, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. “They bind the presynaptic nerve in the muscle and block a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is responsible for contraction of the muscles.” Translation: These injectables soften the movement of facial muscles, minimizing and smoothing out fine lines like crow’s feet, the “elevens” between the eyes or other deep wrinkles.
HOW TO TIME THEM: Neuromodulators take anywhere from three days to a week to set in, so you won’t see results instantly. They also last for three to four months, so you want to make sure you work with a pro to schedule your treatment correctly. If it’s too far in advance of your day, they might wear off, but too close to your day and you might have noticeable bruising and puffiness at the injection site. Nussbaum suggests testing out neuromodulators six months before your wedding to make sure you like the results and can make any necessary adjustments. “Then, we replicate the treatment approximately four weeks prior to the wedding,” Nussbaum says. “I also recommend a touch-up one to two weeks after the injection, so the results are perfect.” WHAT THEY COST: From $400
DERMAL FILLERS
MICRONEEDLING WITH PRP
HOW THEY WORK: Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected beneath the skin to volumize areas of the face that lose plumpness and definition with age. Like neuromodulators, dermal fillers go by many names. Some of the most popular are Restylane, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. “There are many applications for filler depending on the desired results,” Nussbaum says. “They can lift the cheekbones, fill in the nasolabial folds, volumize the lower face and give lips an enhanced pout.” Dermal fillers can be made of several substances, have different effects and last varying lengths of time. “Many fillers are hyaluronic acid based, which can always be dissolved in the event you’re unhappy with the results,” Nussbaum says. “However, some fillers are semipermanent or even permanent—like Poly-L-lactic acid and calciumor silicone-based fillers.” Always ask your dermatologist or plastic surgeon which kind you are getting and if it is dissolvable. Before your wedding, it’s best to use dissolvable fillers, in case you aren’t happy with the results.
HOW IT WORKS: Classic microneedling creates microscopic injuries in the skin using an instrument containing dozens of very fine, short needles, which activate your body’s woundhealing processes and boost collagen production. Without getting too technical, an increase in healthy skin cells and collagen can reduce fine lines, scars and hyperpigmentation. Microneedling with PRP uses platelet-rich plasma from your own blood to help your skin regenerate even more dramatically. “The plasma in our own vascular system has a lot of great growth factors and proteins that help our skin regenerate,” says Babak Azizzadeh, MD, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, California. “When you use microneedling with PRP, it creates a micro-pore that allows the plasma to reach deeper into the layers of the skin for a greater effect.”
HOW TO TIME THEM: As with neuromodulators, Nussbaum recommends testing dermal fillers six months before your wedding so you know what you’ll look like. It’s worth noting that these injectables can take two weeks to settle from swelling or bruising, so avoid getting them the month of your wedding. “I like to place the filler six to eight weeks before the wedding and touch it up two weeks after that,” Nussbaum says. WHAT THEY COST: From $800
HOW TO TIME IT: While you’ll only be swollen and irritated for about 48 hours after microneedling with PRP, Azizzadeh recommends avoiding all professional skin treatments for a full month leading up to your wedding. “There is a very rare chance of an adverse reaction or prolonged redness and swelling,” he says. Also keep in mind that if you have more severe skin concerns, like deep acne scars or extensive hyperpigmentation, it may take several treatments to see significant results, so plan accordingly. WHAT IT COSTS: From $500
CHEMICAL PEEL HOW IT WORKS: As the name implies, this treatment involves applying a chemical solution to the skin that peels off its top layers. This process helps skin cells regenerate; addresses texture issues, discoloration and breakouts; and creates a more even complexion. There are several strengths of chemical peels, and choosing the right one for you depends on your specific concerns—as well as how much time you want to dedicate to recovery. “I would not recommend a deep peel before a wedding, but rather a ››

medium to light one to address issues like acne, hyperpigmentation and overall skin clarity,” says Azizzadeh. “A medium peel, like a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel, is strong enough to create great results, but does not require as much downtime as more intense options.” HOW TO TIME IT: If you’re opting for a medium to light peel, as Azizzadeh recommends, you can heal in as little as 10 days, but schedule it two months before your wedding date to be safe. Deep peels can take anywhere from six to eight weeks to heal and should be scheduled at least a few months prior to your day. WHAT IT COSTS: From $300
HOW IT WORKS: This noninvasive laser treatment uses quick bursts of energy (that don’t damage the skin’s surface) to gently heat the skin to speed up collagen production. It can help retexturize your complexion and reduce the look of wrinkles, fine lines, acne scarring and dark spots associated with sun exposure. It also helps control the redness associated with rosacea by constricting blood vessels. “This works well before any big event,” says Lian Mack, MD, a dermatologist and founder of GlamDerm in New York City. “There’s no recovery time, and it makes your skin glow.” HOW TO TIME IT: Mild side effects like slight redness and dryness should subside within a few hours after treatment. You should see noticeable results within three or four weeks as your collagen production revs up. Mack recommends a series of Laser Genesis treatments (which could take place three to six months before your wedding), because the results are more dramatic when cumulative. Consult a dermatologist to figure out the best plan for your specific skin concerns. WHAT IT COSTS: From $275
RADIO-FREQUENCY FACIAL HOW IT WORKS: Also called radio-frequency skin tightening, this procedure is a nonsurgical method of tightening your skin. It involves using energy waves to heat the deep layer of your skin called the dermis, which stimulates collagen production. “The target of the

heat waves are loose, disorganized collagen fibers that need to be ‘pruned away’ so new healthy collagen can grow back,” says Marius Morariu, cofounder of the Tracie Martyn spa in New York City. “It addresses concerns like saggy skin, lack of elasticity, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles.” HOW TO TIME IT: The strength of the radio-frequency treatment you receive determines when you should schedule it. “Check with your dermatologist or medi-spa, as the timing depends on the technology and equipment used,” Morariu says. If you opt for a stronger treatment at a dermatologist’s office, you should schedule the last session a couple of weeks before your wedding. “The heat can get very intense and you may have some residual redness and swelling,” Morariu says. But some versions are mild enough that you could book the day before the wedding. WHAT IT COSTS: From $200

HOW TO
Tackle Conflict + Strengthen Your Relationship Contrary to popular belief, couples can disagree while deepening their bond. Here are six studybacked tips for how to build your relationship.
i
n 2017, The Gottman Institute and the Gay Couples Institute conducted a joint study to see how 11 sessions of couples therapy impacted long-term gay and lesbian couples. The effects were positive and raised questions about how gay and heterosexual couples differ. Other studies have observed that gay couples have better communication and conflict-resolution skills (and, currently, lower divorce rates). What are those skills and how can they be shared by all couples? Certified Gottman Method therapists Alapaki Yee and Sam Garanzini, cofounders of the Gay Couples Institute, share some researchbased ideas for fostering productive conflict and strengthening your relationship even when you argue. (And did we mention they’re a couple too?)

All couples disagree, but there are many ways to argue. Yee, the institute’s clinical director, says it’s important to keep a sense of humor. “Gay and lesbian couples use humor when they argue, while straight couples don’t as much.” Adds executive director Garanzini, “It’s often playful humor, not sarcasm.” With humor, couples are able to manage tension in a conflict. “It lessens tension so couples are not emotionally overwhelmed,” Yee says. “Say you give your partner the silent treatment or you start yelling at each other. When you bring in humor, you don’t go from zero to 100.” It creates a buffer.
“Same-sex couples work harder on their friendship. That’s how they’re able to use humor— to play—even when they’re fighting,” says Yee. This, of course, requires some effort. Look for ways to deepen your connection with your partner through shared interests or discovering new hobbies together. “When you leverage humor during conflict, for example, you’re leaning on your friendship and reminding one another that you’re also friends.” ››

3 F IN D COM M O N G RO U N D It’s important for couples to view their relationship through the lens of commonality, whether it be culture, shared values or interests. It helps couples, even when arguing, to see themselves as “we” over “me.” One example of commonality in the study was shared gender, which played a role in disagreements. “When you’re arguing with someone of your same gender, there’s already this idea of commonality,” says Yee. But often in same-sex scenarios, there’s even more to that concept. “It could be two people sharing the same socioeconomic potential,” he explains. “For example, two males have an understood earning potential, so the power differential of ‘I’m able to earn more than you’ that would be present with a female isn’t there.”
5 TA LK A B OU T SE X
66
AVO ID B E L L I G E R E N C E W H IL E F I G H TI N G Earning power isn’t the only area that impacts commonality. Assumed gender roles also influence how couples argue, whether the topic involves money or household work. “Our research found there’s less of a power struggle between gay and lesbian partners,” says Yee. “They’re also less likely to be belligerent, domineering or fearbased when fighting.” Same-sex couples were also less likely to resort to shaming, name-calling or eye-rolling, adds Garanzini. “That’s mockery and sarcasm that’s intended to hurt. Heterosexual couples resorted to those tactics faster than same-sex couples [in our study].” Studies also suggest that same-sex couples took longer to become contemptuous, the worst among the key indicators of destructive behavior in relationships. Simply put, you should be kinder to one another when you argue.
22SUM_STYPLAN_Gottman.L [P]_322746.indd 66
ABOUT THE EXPERTS THE GAY COUPLES INSTITUTE Husband-andhusband team Sam Garanzini and Alapaki Yee are both certified Marriage and Family Therapists and Gottman Therapists. They are the cofounders of the Gay Couples Institute, which is based in San Francisco. THE GOTTMAN INSTITUTE Founded by relationship experts John and Julie Gottman, The Gottman Institute is a global therapy leader that empowers couples to deepen their connection. It also helps prepare individuals for their best relationship yet.
The number one question couples want to discuss in therapy at the Gay Couples Institute (and beyond) is sex. “It’s something our profession talks about the least,” says Garanzini. “Our study found that samesex couples talk about the topic a lot.” He cites John Gottman, whose Art and Science of Love workshop says: “Heterosexual couples have a lot to learn about sex from same-sex couples…Because we know that when couples talk a lot about sex, they have a lot of sex.” Yee elaborates, “Sex is on the mind throughout the day. After you get married, you have to proactively keep talking about it, including preferences and what you find attractive. If you make sex actually part of the conversation regularly, then you will have a lot of it.”
6 F LIRT A N D E XPR E S S IN TIMACY You can also soften conflict by redefining sexuality and building intimacy with your partner. “People have a very narrow view of how they define sex—if they even talk about sex at all,” says Garanzini. But there’s a difference between having sex and being sexual, he explains. This could involve touch, tantra or a massage, as well as a passing remark or observation. By alleviating the pressure of simply having sex as a task, couples can be more receptive to flirtatiousness and communicating intimacy, adding a new layer of connection to the relationship.

WHY
HOW
WHEN
A couple needs to have a firm head count to share with their venue and caterer ahead of the wedding day.
Most couples will indicate how you should RSVP on the invitation by including a reply card or instructing you to respond via their wedding website. If the couple invited you and a guest, say if you are bringing someone. (And no, you cannot add a plus-one.)
You should ideally respond as soon as you know your plans, but no later than the requested date (usually noted on the reply card). Don’t make a couple track you down to confirm your attendance.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PLANS CHANGE If we’ve learned anything these past few years, it’s that plans can and do change. If you find yourself unable to attend after RSVPing “yes,” notify the couple immediately, ideally by phone or in a thoughtful email.

The initialism comes from the French phrase “répondez s’il vous plaît,” meaning, “please respond.” The French rarely use this abbreviation anymore, but most wedding invitations carry these four letters, some even on their very own reply card.
TH E
wedding website WH E N T O VI S I T
W HAT TO NOTE
Most to-be-weds include important details like the wedding date and locale. Some will share more, like the story of how they met, who’s in the wedding party and extra activities. Check the site before you make any travel plans (there may be a hotel room block) and revisit it as the date approaches to stay in the know.
The website should be your first stop for any questions you have about the wedding. Most couples try to anticipate questions and include everything from dress code details to driving directions on their website. This is also the best place to find out where a couple is registered.
22SUM_STYPLAN_StyleB.L [P]_322774.indd 69
PRO TIP If you can’t find the answer to your question, try not to contact the couple, especially in the week leading up to the big day. Instead, reach out to a relative or a member of the wedding party who may be able to help.

Q: WHO GETS ONE?
Good guests follow the requested dress code. If a couple asks for something specific, like all-white or Gatsby attire, check their website for more details. Here are general rules for the most common wedding dress codes.
BLACK TIE The most formal dress code (save white tie), this is generally reserved for events that take place later in the day. Tuxedos with bow ties and formal gowns are expected. This is one of the strictest dress codes, so there really isn’t room for interpretation.
Q: HOW DO YOU KNOW
70
IF YOU GOT ONE?
If your wedding invite is addressed to you and your significant other, you’ve got a date. Just remember that wedding invitations are nontransferable. If you find yourself uncoupled by the time of the celebration, you cannot and should not invite someone else in their place without speaking to the to-be-weds. If you don’t have a long-term partner, but your friends want you to bring a date along, they will address the invite to you and a guest. If it is addressed to *just* you, you’ve been invited solo.
BLACK TIE OPTIONAL Still formal, but less rigid, this is a cross between black-tie and formal fashion. Tuxedos are welcome, but a dark suit will also work. Keep the time of day in mind too— an early afternoon wedding can skew less formal on the black-tie spectrum.
Q: WHAT IF YOU DON’T
FORMAL ATTIRE This wording is quite popular on wedding invites. It’s less formal than black tie and doesn’t have as many hard-and-fast rules. Cocktail dresses or a nice pantsuit are perfectly appropriate, as are traditional suits and ties.
GET ONE? You’re going to have to mingle alone. No, it was not a mistake. And no, you cannot ask the couple for a plus-one—sorry!
BY T H E N U M B E R S How do you measure up as a guest? Check out the latest stats from our guest study.

COCKTAIL ATTIRE
46%
of guests WILL SPLURGE ON THEIR OUTFIT
One of the most flexible dress codes, this means that short or long dresses or even a jumpsuit are all fair game. A tailored suit with a crisp white shirt is a no-fail choice.
SEMI-FORMAL This can feel like a tricky dress code to nail because it’s in between casual and formal. A suit and tie is still appropriate here, as are simple cocktail dresses.
FROM LEFT: ALICE DESIGN/NOUN PROJECT; GABRIELLE SMARR FOR EMILY WREN PHOTOGRAPHY
Bottom line: It’s up to the couple. Traditionally anyone who is married, lives together or is in a serious relationship gets a plus-one. It’s also customary for members of the wedding party, regardless of relationship status. Couples may be less likely to give a plus-one to a guest who is casually dating, a coworker or a single guest who will likely know others at the wedding.
CASUAL ATTIRE This is the most relaxed dress code of all. It doesn’t exactly mean that anything goes—athleisure is never okay—but you can wear a comfortable outfit befitting a special event. Use business casual as a guide: think dresses, separates or slacks and a jacket.
PRO TIP Skip white at a wedding unless you’ve been explicitly asked to wear it.

You must attend the ceremony and reception. Unless you’ve only been invited to one event, you’re expected to attend both. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of the ceremony start time; you don’t want to follow a wedding procession down the aisle. Let an usher seat you or follow signage cues (most couples skip the “sitting on sides” tradition).
TECH USE Couples hire a photographer for a reason. Don’t take any pictures at the ceremony (otherwise your smartphone will be in all their photos!) and set your phone to silent. Unless the couple has requested no phones, it’s okay to snap pictures at the reception, but stay out of the way of the hired pros. And no posting pics of the couple until they do! If they have a hashtag, be sure to use it.

CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS Many couples incorporate religious or cultural traditions in their wedding ceremony. If you are unfamiliar with them, look to the families of the to-be-weds for cues. Couples may also explain traditions in the program.

RESPECT THE SEATING CHART
SHOP THE REGISTRY
Your assigned seat was a labor of love. Couples spend countless hours considering the placement of guests at the reception. Do not rearrange seating assignments or place cards— it’s a huge faux pas. Check the seating chart and sit where you’ve been placed. For an easy conversation starter, just introduce yourself to guests at the table and ask how they know the couple.
Couples carefully curate their wedding registry. Respect! Shop it—they know what they want better than anyone. If you can’t find something on the registry that’s within your budget, opt for a gift card or ask a few fellow guests to go in on a special item.
CASH IS KING With couples getting married later in life and living together before they say “I do,” many already have the traditional items found on a wedding registry. If a couple asks for cash, it’s what they want. Some may even share how they plan to spend it, from a home renovation to an epic honeymoon adventure.

Have fun—but not too much fun. You don’t want to have to make amends with the couple in the morning. Socialize with other guests and enjoy the open bar responsibly (pace yourself and hydrate between signature cocktails). Be sure to congratulate the couple and sign the guest book too. Be present, hit the dance floor and be a gracious guest!
SHOP AND SHIP HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SPEND?
PRO TIP Take a favor! Couples spend a lot of time thinking up the perfect parting gift for their guests (some even add a DIY touch) so don’t leave it behind. If it’s positioned at your place setting, loop by before heading out.
22SUM_STYPLAN_StyleB.L [P]_322774.indd 73
There’s no magic number when it comes to gifting. According our data, guests generally spend about $160 on a wedding gift. Use your relationship to the couple to dictate what you spend—you might be more generous with a close family member or a best friend than, say, a coworker.
It may feel wrong to show up to a wedding empty-handed, but it’s best for everyone. You don’t have to lug a toaster to the wedding and, better still, the couple doesn’t have to find your gift a ride home at the end of the night. Want to earn bonus points with the couple? Mail the gift two months ahead of the wedding, allowing them to keep pace with their thank-you notes.

SINISTER STYLE Eve in the Garden of Eden inspired the day’s moody flowers. As a complement to the idea, Stefano says, “we were especially inspired by a textile design by William Kilburn, an Irish illustrator from the 1700s. It is floral and pretty, but has something dark and sinister about it.” RUNWAY READY Alexander McQueen was a must for the couple’s ceremony outfits because he “embodied everything I imagined the wedding to be: unconventional, theatrical and with elevated attention to detail,” says James (right). “For the evening, we wanted something a little more glitzy.” They changed into silver and gold jacquard suits. FABULOUS FLOWERS Roses, carnations, dahlias, thistles, snowberries, cosmos, amaranthus, gladioli and eucalyptus comprised the floral arrangements.
R
eclaiming and celebrating the concept of sin was at the center of Stefano Attardi (39 and a software engineering manager) and James Nguyen’s (32 and an apparel technical designer) wedding in Italy. The venue, a 13th-century villa that belongs to Stefano’s family, is covered in Renaissance-style frescos, many of which depict religious themes. However, since the couple isn’t religious, they wanted to find a way to imbue their own style and personality into the space. They settled on sin as a theme to celebrate their day of joyful indulgence. “Embracing the word felt like a small act of rebellion against the idea that a same-sex relationship is sinful,” Stefano says. “Each of the seven deadly sins turned into an opportunity for fun and celebration.” — HAN NAH N OWAC K

SINFUL SIGNAGE Each of the seven deadly sins corresponded to an element of the wedding. “Gluttony for the dinner, sloth for the lounge area, pride for the ceremony, envy for the photo booth, lust for the dance floor,” says Stefano. “We chose a Renaissance painting to illustrate each one and connect the theme to the venue.” DELICIOUS DISHES As self-proclaimed foodies, Stefano and James say it was important to “showcase the best ingredients and dishes Italy has to offer, but—true to our theme—present them in their most sinful, indulgent, gluttonous preparation.” Guests first enjoyed five appetizers, like a crispy polenta sandwich with creamed salt cod, and quail eggs with bottarga. A nine-course tasting menu followed, which included a Bellini sorbet with basil.

In 1969, Stefano’s grandfather purchased the venue where the couple tied the knot, and over the years, he furnished it with locally sourced 17th-century pieces. “I would visit often while I was growing up, especially for family celebrations and New Year’s parties, so I have many memories in that villa,” Stefano says. “We also liked the idea of the villa because it was intimate, exclusive—and free!”

SUMMERTIME STEMS The couple introduced their colorful, gardeninspired aesthetic in invitations with watercolor blooms. On the wedding day, the botanical designs were just as vibrant as their stationery counterparts. Tallia’s bouquet included orchids, dahlias, ranunculus, astilbe, roses and cosmos. NANA’S LOVE Flowers weren’t the only ingredient in the bouquet. The florist also wrapped Tallia’s late grandmother’s wedding dress sleeve around the bouquet. “My Nana was one of the most influential people in my life, so it meant the world to my family to know a piece of her was with us,” she says. BEST BUDS Tallia gave her bridesmaids robes to get ready in and earrings to wear with their mauve dresses on the wedding day.
A
deep love of soccer inspired Tallia Holland (30 and works in sales) and Matthew (Matt) Donaldson (30 and head of channel sales) as they planned their peach-and-taupe wedding. While dating, the couple would wear matching jerseys and get up in the middle of the night to watch Liverpool Football Club games from across the pond. The couple’s love of the British team runs so deep that Matt even selected Liverpool’s pregame anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” by Richard Rogers, for the dance he shared with his mother. The nods to the sport started earlier in the day as the couple exchanged vows in front of a ceremony arch decked out with netting that resembled a goal. Then, at the reception, calligraphed soccer balls helped guests find their seats. — H N

TIME TO TRAVEL Tallia and Matt paid homage to their love of travel with a vignette of assorted luggage. Some pieces were emblazoned with calligraphed phrases from loved ones. TOUCH OF TEXTURE A mix of textures added depth the wedding style: Velvet imparted a luxe feel, while rattan brought softness. Striped tablecloths gave warmth to the day’s beautiful design. WICKER WATERING HOLE At the rattan bar, guests had the choice of two signature cocktails: the “Full Don,” an old fashioned, and “Something with a Kick,” an Aperol spritz. DOUBLE CHOCOLATE PERFECTION For their four-tier cake with buttercream frosting, the couple settled on a rich chocolate flavor with chocolate filling.

It was paramount for the couple to honor loved ones who were unable to attend the wedding. In addition to a flower arrangement for a late groomsman, Matt wore cuff links that originally belonged to Tallia’s late grandfather. BEAUTIFUL BOTANICALS From the ceremony arch to the cake, hydrangeas anchored the wedding design. Roses and ranunculus, meanwhile, were woven throughout Smita’s (left) and Christina’s bouquets. IMPACTFUL “I DOS” The couple wanted all of their attendees to approach the nuptials with intention. “We asked that our guests be grounded prior to the ceremony starting, so they could really be present in the moment.” DECADENT DESSERTS The chocolate cake with cookies-and-cream buttercream wasn’t the only sweet treat on deck. A dessert spread beckoned guests with whoopie pies (a Maine staple and Christina’s favorite), peanut butter brownies and chocolate chip cookies (Smita’s favorite). NUANCED DESIGN The pair envisioned an aesthetic that felt “coastal and romantic, but not preppy.”

ew people understand the strain of the pandemic as much as health care workers Smita Sihag (42 and a surgeon) and Christina Valente (30 and a health care administrator). Which is why it was so special for the couple to have the chance to celebrate their love with their nearest and dearest, despite the hurdle of a postponement. The duo planned a wedding on the coast of Maine, near where Smita’s family owns a home and she spent summers growing up. The day embodied a romantic, coastal garden party with touches of culture from the couple’s Indian and Italian roots. The reception menu was one of the many elements that showcased this blending of cultures. It was especially meaningful that the couple wore heirloom jewelry on the big day, because, they explain, “we went through a lot in our relationship in regards to acceptance from family.” Their journey as a couple is also why the vow exchange was Christina’s favorite part of the wedding day: “Smita already knew how much I loved her, so I wanted our family to feel our love.”

BOHO BLOOMS The flower arrangements included scabiosa, proteas, ruscus, roses, chrysanthemums, lisianthus and amaranthus. UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE “Since the wedding was outdoors, we wanted to enhance the natural beauty with elegant yet simple tabletop pieces,” says Neerellyn. A velvet tablecloth anchored the design, while matte black plates brought an edgy vibe to the setup. TASTY TREATS For the intimate dinner, the couple offered citrus roast chicken, seared halibut and braised short ribs paired with rice pilaf and herbed vegetables. Afterward, guests dug into a two-tier chocolate cake with Swiss meringue buttercream and strawberry compote. MUSICAL MIX The evening’s entertainment ranged from R&B to bachata and salsa tunes.

amily was a central part of Neerellyn Hernandez (36 and a compliance officer) and Marquis Bridges’ (36 and a labor representative) “desert romance” wedding in California’s Yucca Valley. The couple, who met in middle school, got engaged at Marquis’ grandmother’s 90th birthday party. They set about planning a wedding with a mix of earth and jewel tones that celebrated their nearest and dearest. On the big day, the couple’s daughter acted as flower girl and inspired her mother’s vows. Neerellyn thanked Marquis for “not shying away from the challenges of fatherhood. You are such a present dad, and I could not be more grateful.” To cap off the heartfelt ceremony, the couple and their kids shared a group hug before decamping to the alfresco reception. — H N

#MAKETRADITION Each element in the favor bundles carried meaning. “Palo santo is traditionally used to clear negative energy and purify spaces, people and objects. It also welcomes good energy. Selenite dispels negative energy and enhances clarity, focus and creates calm. Lavender sets the intention for a peaceful, grounded energy when engaging in any sacred ceremony.”

BESPOKE THREADS Before she even met Meaghan, Brianna knew exactly who would make her wedding suit one day. After watching a documentary about Bindle & Keep, a Brooklyn-based tailor that specializes in nonbinary formal wear, Brianna knew the designer was the perfect fit. GARDEN PARTY REUNION For their day, the couple wanted a vibe that felt like a “city kids’ version of a garden party with a healthy dose of high-school reunion kitschyness,” Brianna says. “The reunion feel came naturally considering most of the guests hadn’t been to a wedding (or any large gathering) in over a year.” PHYSICAL PROMISES Instead of reading their vows aloud, the couple exchanged them as letters during the ceremony. “It felt more intimate,” explains Brianna.
C
elebrating their beloved city was paramount for Brianna Brandon (30 and a vice president of operational excellence and risk management at a bank) and Meaghan Collins (30 and chief of staff at a venture capital firm) when planning their wedding. “We are Brooklynites and love this city,” explains the couple. “We wanted to support our city and local businesses recovering from the financial impact of the pandemic. We made a concerted effort to buy locally and enlist vendors from Brooklyn and the New York City area and aimed to have a sustainable event.” In the end, Brooklyn Grange, a rooftop urban farm that works with vendors that adhere to certain sustainability standards, helped them bring their locally sourced, eco-conscious wedding to life. — H N

SEASONAL STEMS “Like in a garden, we wanted the flowers to be wild, informal, colorful and in-season,” says the duo. Their florist designed arrangements with rudbeckia, marigolds, foxglove, cosmos, dahlias and zinnias, as well as summer grasses, herbs and green vines. FARM FARE Many ingredients for the menu were sourced directly from the site. “Our menu was light, summery and fresh,” Brianna says. “The mac and cheese katsu sandos were my favorite, and I also loved the tuna tartare and lobster tostada.” To cap off the menu, the couple ordered cake from the bakery where they had their first date. PLEASE BE SEATED Instead of paper place cards, the couple ordered lasercut wood names that doubled as favors.

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 4

Barbados 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.
The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.
2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.
7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers. 3
First made more than 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors. 4
Bajans (as Barbados residents are called) are crazy about cricket and golf.
8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks.
If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise. 9

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago.
Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 2
3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.
6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast.
Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 7
8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant.
If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.
Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.
5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.
10 If you or your partner loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3
Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip. 4
To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 6
7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay.
While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 8
9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.
Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves that have never seen the light of day! 10

LAST LOOK
A big piece of advice that was given to us and should be given to all couples is: Do what you want for your day and have fun with it! Do what feels right and makes you feel your best, and know that ultimately this moment is about your partnership and the commitment you two are making. There will always be outside pressure when you are making big decisions, but listen to what makes the most sense for you.”
