W

ow, that was fast…. It all started with a hunch (and a hellish wedding, but that’s another story). A hunch that cookie-cutter, by-the-book weddings were just too boring and out of step with the cool, fun, savvy couples my husband (cofounder David Liu) and I knew. A hunch that technology could vastly simplify—and spice up— the world of weddings. And a hunch that launching a company could not only be really fun, but also revolutionize and bring vital energy to an important creative industry. Twenty-five years—and some 20 million weddings—later, we still

need to pinch ourselves. Building The Knot has been a dream, with such extraordinary highs (hearing Oprah declare, “If you are planning a wedding, YOU HAVE TO use The Knot!”) and a few serious lows (reading hate mail after we very publicly declared our support for gay marriage in 1999 ). But since Day One, by far the best part of this project (and our greatest inspiration) is our community—you, our couples, who have trusted us with your big day, given us feedback and helped build the most beautiful, practical and popular wedding planning platform in the world. And also our community of creative partners: the designers, florists, photographers and other wedding professionals who work with us to make The Knot the vibrant, growing brand we all love. So, to you all, our community, our “better half”: Happy Anniversary. We are so happy we found you. We couldn’t imagine life without you. Thank you.

When it comes to receiving unsolicited wedding advice, I take inspiration from the crafty penguins in the movie Madagascar: just smile and wave. Or, more specifically, smile and then change the subject. You don’t need to heed wedding advice that doesn’t apply to you or your relationship. If discussing it makes you uncomfortable, then you have every right to shift the conversation in another direction. However, in the same way you’re being mindful of your own feelings, it doesn’t hurt to keep other people’s feelings in mind too. Loved ones don’t typically offer advice in order to be harmful; ultimately, their intention is to help.

MICHELLE NORWOOD Owner of Michelle Norwood Events Michelle is a wedding planner based in New Orleans who specializes in bespoke destination events around the country.

I’m loving how more couples are planning multi-day destination celebrations for their nearest and dearest loved ones. Even if to-be-weds and their guests aren’t quite ready to travel internationally, we’re seeing a rise in domestic destination weddings. After such a long period of isolation, people are excited to connect and celebrate. Couples are hosting their friends and families in stunning locales (the reception above took place in a quaint courtyard in New Orleans) and creating experience-based trips that go beyond an evening reception. The rise in weekend-long destination affairs has also contributed to another trend I’m loving—highly intimate and personalized nuptials. Many to-be-weds are paring down the guest list considerably, which leaves space in the budget to go all out on the details. For example, if your guest list is small enough that everyone can be seated at one long table, consider splurging on luxe linens or copper Tolix chairs, like those seen above, to elevate the only tablescape you’re creating.

This is a hot take, but you don’t need to have a wedding party if you don’t want to. If choosing a wedding party makes you feel more stressed and obligated than excited, it’s completely okay to skip this tradition. There are other ways to include the people you’re genuinely close with, such as asking someone to help you choose your wedding attire or give a reading during the ceremony.

TOAST

A WITHOUT CHAMPAGNE IS STILL A TOAST How to host a dry(er) wedding, accommodate teetotaling guests and everything in between.

n September 2020, my friends Jessica and Jessie were married at a safe, socially distanced outdoor wedding in New York City. Besides the mask mandate, six-foot separation rule and copious amounts of hand sanitizer, there was something distinctly different about that day. Namely, my level of intoxication (read: zero). It was the first time I was ever sober at a wedding. I was partaking in a dry month. I’m in my early thirties. I’ve partied through bachelorette weekends, raised multiple glasses to many happy couples, drunkenly danced the night away and unfortunately woken up with hangovers. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been (mostly) fun—minus the dreaded headaches, dehydration and so forth. But I’ve come to realize that my experiences would have been just as amazing (if not better) without taking shots at the open bar or going back for a second cocktail. After all, these nights are about celebrating the happy couple, not the drink menu. In 2017, I started participating in annual Dry Januarys. Initially, I made a silly bet with a friend about a month-long hiatus from booze. I quickly learned that giving up wine, beer and spirits for a mere 31 days positively affected my mood, sleep, skin, bank account, as well as so many other aspects of my life. I love the benefits of Dry Jan so much that I’ve done several other alcoholfree months over the years. During Jessica and Jessie’s wedding, a

21WIN_FOB_Essay.L [P]_128580.indd 32

Sober September was already a few weeks underway. At the ceremony and reception, I was able to be more present without an alcoholic beverage in hand. Focusing on speeches, my date and the happy couple (ahem, the reason I was there in the first place) only enhanced this special day. To boot, I knew I wouldn’t wake up with a dreadful hangover (which was liberating!). There were also some surprising perks I didn’t think about in advance. For starters, I looked better in photos, because alcohol dehydrates your skin; I slept soundly that night, as alcohol can cause awakenings; and I felt energetic throughout, instead of losing steam at the end of the event. My experience led me to consider what couples could do to make their wedding more sober-friendly.

A C K N O WLEDG E T H A T NOT E V E R YONE WA NT S T O INDULG E I’m not in recovery, or 100% sober, or pregnant, but if you’re planning a wedding, some of your guests might be. Given that, it’s important to be inclusive of everyone in attendance. There are people who don’t drink due to religious beliefs or medical conditions, individuals trying on a sober curious lifestyle, and/or friends and family who simply don’t like the taste of alcohol—not to mention the designated drivers. The point is that there are many reasons people abstain from alcohol.

SER VE A LC OH OL- FREE OPTIONS

DITCH THE DRINKS Sober curious? Sheinbaum’s book offers approachable advice on taking a break from booze. ($12, amazon.com)

HILARY SHEINBAUM Writer + Speaker New York City

It really is imperative to think about alternative sips for nondrinkers. When selecting beverages, you can stock the bar with standard sodas, juices and the like, but other thoughtful options include nonalcoholic wines (including bubbly for toasts) and beers. Mixed drinks with nonalcoholic spirits (ranging from N.A. tequila to N.A. whiskey) have gained popularity on bar menus nationwide. With these innovative liquids, you can offer signature cocktails that are buzz-free too.

C ONSIDER YOUR R UN OF SHOW While alcohol is typically part of weddings, it certainly is not the main event. For this reason, it’s a good idea to think about how you’ll schedule the day. For some couples, that might mean scheduling big moments (cake cutting, speeches, etc.) earlier in the evening so nondrinkers can opt out of late nights often fueled by greater alcohol consumption. Of course, if alcoholfree guests want to stay late, they can drink the N.A. beverages you’ve supplied and party on.

WHILE WE CONTINUE TO FIGHT OUR WAY OUT OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, WEDDINGS HAVE MADE A RETURN TO OUR SOCIAL CALENDARS. HERE’S THE LATEST TAKE.

TRENDS WE HOPE ARE HERE TO STAY It’s no secret that COVID-19 changed the way couples married in 2020/21. But it wasn’t all bad! Here are some ideas made popular by the pandemic that we plan to keep around.

INDIVIDUAL FOOD PORTIONS It started as a necessary health measure, but it will stay because it’s so darn fun. A charcuterie board for one? Yes, please!

2 SOUPED-UP WEDDING WEBSITES Through all of the uncertainty, The Knot wedding websites made it easy to keep guests up-to-date in real time with new features like a Q&A section and a place to livestream minimonies. Bottom line: Guests love to be in the know— the more info the better!

4 HUMOR Laughter proved to be the best medicine as couples were forced to postpone their weddings (in some cases, multiple times!). As a result, some of our fave changethe-dates, cake toppers and wedding signs were infused with the couple’s sense of humor. Definitely more of that.

5 COLOR —AND LOTS OF IT

3 VIRTUAL ELEMENT With restrictions on things like travel and group gatherings, Zoom weddings actually became “a thing” in 2020. While most of us prefer to celebrate IRL, a virtual option for those who can’t make it in person only adds more love to the day.

With rescheduled wedding dates came a rethink of entire aesthetics. Couples ditched muted hues and embraced color to infuse an unmistakably celebratory vibe for when they finally said “I do.” Our take? The bolder, the better.

WHO BETTER TO HELP US CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KNOT THAN A COUPLE ALSO CELEBRATING THE MAJOR MILESTONE? yle Richards has had a busy year. In addition to her popular Bravo Housewives franchise entering its 11th season, Kyle’s feature film Halloween Kills (where she reprises her role from the original Halloween) finally hit the big screen after delays due to COVID-19. Her holiday movie for Peacock, The Real Housewives of the North Pole, is set to premiere later this year. But perhaps her biggest accomplishment was back in January, when she celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary to real estate mogul Mauricio Umansky. Kyle shared the milestone on Instagram saying, “I still get happy when I hear your car pull in the driveway and still get sad if we have to spend a night apart. How is that even possible?? May we continue to grow, learn, explore, experience & create incredible memories side by side. I love you forever.” Despite their being in separate places (and on the phone), Kyle and Mauricio’s connection is palpable during our interview. While they strike a playful tone in the retelling of their courtship, wedding and quartercentury marriage, they’re serious about the dedication and respect they have for each other and the life they’ve built. KRI STEN MA X WELL COOPER: So let’s go back to the beginning. Tell me how the two of you met. K YLE RI CHARDS: Oh my gosh, we actually met in a nightclub called Bar One, which is now Bootsy Bellows. It’s so funny to me because now our kids go there and we’ll says ‘well, that’s actually where we met 27 years ago.’ Twenty-seven-plus [years ago]! [Mauricio] thought I was Demi Moore’s

MAU RI CI O U MAN S K Y: I figured if I couldn’t get Demi Moore, I could try to get her sister! KM C: And then you got something even better! M U: Oh, I got something way better. KM C: Kyle, what was it that drew you to Mauricio? KR: He was just a sweet guy and he loved my daughter. And we like to do the same things. We share the same interests and have common goals, and I think that’s what really drew us together. But the most important thing to me was how he was with my oldest daughter, Farrah. KM C: And Mauricio, what was it about Kyle? M U: I mean, other than the fact that she is absolutely gorgeous, she has an amazing soul. She’s an amazing person. And quite honestly, the fact that she already had a daughter, it made dating a lot more important. I had to take it much more seriously because I was responsible for a woman with a daughter. I also got insight into the way that she was as a mom and how good of a mom she was. And that gave me insight into the future and what it would look like. KM C: That’s really beautiful. And so after that came the proposal. Tell me about that! KR: You tell, honey. M U: The proposal, oh my God, I took Kyle out to [Santa Monica restaurant] Shutters. And you know, Kyle at that point never wanted to leave her kid. She’s still the same. She just doesn’t want to be away from our kids, no matter what. But I took her to Shutters on a date, and I gave her a bouquet of flowers. And it was a very pretty, romantic evening and inside the flowers I had a rosebud case... KR: A ring box. M U: Yes, a ring box that looked like a rosebud. So I gave her the flowers hoping she would see the fake flower or box. Of course she didn’t because it was such a good box. So I had to tell her, ‘honey, smell the flowers, like, do they all smell the same?’ KR: Here’s the truth. I saw something that looked like a box, but I didn’t want to be wrong and embarrass myself.

I T H I N K T H E D I F F I C U LT I E S W E ’ V E G O N E T H R O U G H O N T H E S H O W — A N D I K N O W IT SOUNDS LIKE A CLICHÉ—BUT IT’S MADE U S S T R O N G E R . — K Y L E KM C: That’s fair! M U: And then when she saw the box and she opened it and saw

the ring, I got down on one knee and I asked her to marry me. Is that pretty accurate, honey? Twenty-seven years ago? Was that pretty good? KR: Yes, it was. KM C: Kyle, what was your reaction? KR: I was just so happy and excited—it was a dream for me. The moment we started dating, I just felt like he was the one. And

21WIN_FEAT_CoverStory.L [P]_128610.indd 38

a few months into dating he had asked me if I would consider converting to Judaism. Growing up in Los Angeles, Bel-Air where I lived, all of my friends are Jewish. So it was really a no-brainer for me. I used to look at the Jewish families and think, ‘Aw, they’re all married and they have these great family dinners together.’ I loved that whole life. I used to wear a Jewish star when I was a kid and pretend I was Jewish, so I was like, ‘Yes, I’ll convert!’ So then I just had to wait for the ring. KM C: What was your wedding planning like? M U: Oooh I’m going to let you take that one, honey. I did absolutely nothing. KR: He did absolutely nothing. He was a kid. He got the ring and then was like, ‘Okay, I’m out.’ I turned to my sisters for advice, but because it was a Jewish wedding, I really needed his parents involved, which they were. I had never done anything like that and all of a sudden I had to consider a chuppah and all of these things I didn’t even know the words to. We decided on the Bel-Air Country Club and it was just amazing bringing my family together and his family and all of our friends. And it’s so funny, I’ll never forget the day of our wedding, everyone had to wear kippahs on their head, and my family was like, ‘Wait, what’s happening?’ I looked over and my brother-in-law, who’s not Jewish, was in the mirror putting it on and I was like, ‘Okay, this is a first for our family.’ Overall, we knew we wanted it to be really elegant and really fun. But we were so worried about people making long speeches, so we said no speeches at all. M U: Honey, do we want to talk about how the wedding had to be moved up in time? Or do we not want to talk about that? KR: It’s not a secret. The wedding was originally going to be I believe in April, and then we moved it up to January so my dress would still fit, because I was pregnant. KM C: Well, that was an exciting addition to the wedding! KR: It was. M U: And our oldest daughter, Farrah, was in the wedding party, which was cool and fun. KR: That’s something important! When my husband asked me to marry him, he also gave Farrah a little ‘engagement ring’ that was a heart with two hands holding it. M U: That’s right, I had to ask her to marry me too! KM C: How old was she at the time? And what was her reaction? KR: She was five when we met so she was seven by the wedding date. And oh my goodness, she was just so in love with [Mauricio]. Every night we would all lay in bed and she would suck her thumb and rub his ear with her other little hand like he was her blankie! KM C: What was her role in the wedding? KR: She was a flower girl along with my sister Kim’s daughters, Whitney and Brooke, and then Nicky [Hilton] was a flower girl, but Paris [Hilton] was a junior bridesmaid. KM C: A real family affair! Were there any traditions you really cherished? KR: Well, all of it for me, really. But I can remember thinking, ‘I am so worried about people lifting me up on a chair while I’m pregnant and doing the hora.’ I’m a nervous Nelly anyway, so I would’ve already been scared. But then I thought, ‘Oh my God, I can not believe I’m doing this pregnant and being lifted into the air.’ KM C: If you were to get married today, what do you think you would do differently?

COVER STORY home, even just for 24 hours, to see my husband and the other kids. You just have to make the effort, and it’s never not been worth it for us. KM C: Your relationship is obviously in the public eye. How do you keep it strong under scrutiny? KR : When we first started [The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills], the more people would talk about how happy we were, the more people would try to come for us. It was shocking because we had never dealt with something like that. But now, after all these years on the show, people know us and know our relationship. I think the difficulties we’ve gone through on the show—and I know it sounds like a cliché—but it’s made us stronger. And it’s crazy to think you could say that about a reality show. But when you’ve been tested over time, you either cave and you lose, or you win and come out on top. And we definitely ended up being stronger from being tested. KM C : What do you think is important for people to consider in a partner, if they want what you have? M C: For me, the most important thing is somebody that you love to be with and you love to hang out with. Romance is fantastic and it’s super-important, but at the end of the day, it has to be someone who makes you laugh and you can have fun with. That’s a recipe that lasts forever. KR: I do think some of it is that the planets align and it’s fate, or whatever it may be. But my husband and I have always enjoyed the same things and shared a common goal. We both want to succeed and do well. We both want to have our family together and strong. But as you grow, you do change and you have to know that. You can either grow apart or you can grow together. Something that I think is really important for any marriage starting out is to surround yourself with other happy couples. You don’t want to surround yourself with people where one is a cheater or they fight all the time or they have other problems. We make a point to surround ourselves with other solid couples and it just makes your foundation even stronger. KM C : Any last bit of advice for a 25-year marriage? KR : Oh my gosh, what could we say about these 25 years? We’ve been through so much. I think it’s important to know that you are going to be challenged and you have to start out remembering that you are in this for better or for worse. I’ve lost both my mother and my father during our marriage. I’ve been pregnant with my head in the toilet getting sick. We’ve done the not-fun times, but you just really have to know that you are sticking with it through thick and thin. There are going to be bad days, but hopefully the good outweighs the bad. We’ve, of course, had challenging times, but never ever a moment where we weren’t on the same page. We love each other more than anything, and we’re in this until the day we die. M U: Kyle, you’re so cute.

41

KR: I would not change one thing. It was just filled with fun and love and it was just amazing. I wouldn’t change one thing about it today. M U: I wouldn’t change anything. I mean, if we were going to do it today and have a vow renewal, I would do it a lot smaller. KR: But here’s the thing, I don’t believe in getting married again or a vow renewal because we got it right the first time and I just don’t want to mess with what works. KM C: I actually really love that sentiment. Let me ask about your 25 years as a married couple. Are there any rituals you’ve kept throughout the years? KR: I could say we do a regular date night—we tried that, but honestly, the nights that we have open, we just go out, because our schedules are so crazy. When we were first married and we were struggling financially, we’d get a babysitter one night a week and we went to get our real estate licenses together. That was our date night! Let’s kill two birds with one stone—we’ll get a babysitter and maybe start a new business so we can start making some money. KM C: What do you hope your girls take away from seeing their parents being married for 25 years? KR: You know, it’s very hard to teach your kids this is what you should do and this is the right way to live your life. You have to lead by example. And our kids see us as being very proud of our family and loving being a family unit. And sometimes I do think that these are big shoes to fill. I know my husband and I are very fortunate, but I hope we set the bar high so they don’t ever settle. M U: We truly love to hang out together. You know, we have our house in Aspen and it’s become a real sanctuary for us. It’s definitely a place that Kyle and I use to go and tune out and, while we never fall out of love, we go there to fall back in love, for lack of a different phrase. It’s just a sanctuary. KR: It keeps us connected. M U: It’s real nature time and a time to get out of the city. It’s been really good for us. KR: I would add that fitness is a very big part of our lives and our relationship. We’ll go hiking or paddleboarding or biking, and we really enjoy that time together. I love that he pushes me out of my comfort zone because I’m cautious. I always say that he pushes me outside my comfort zone and I keep him safe and alive, so we’re a good combo. KM C: You two both have fairly demanding jobs, to put it mildly. How do you balance your time together and your time apart? KR: Calendar sync! M U: Well, we just try not to ever be apart. That’s the bottom line. Recently, we’ve just had to because we both have very busy lives. But I can tell you from my perspective that when I travel for business alone, I make the trips as fast as possible. KR : I was shooting this movie in Utah for five weeks and I was panicking about leaving the family. Portia actually ended up coming with me, but I would fly

WHAT KINDS OF PIERCINGS ARE HOT RIGHT NOW? Multiple earlobe piercings are very popular in general. Piercings that sit high on the cartilage of the ear or nestled in the rook of the ear, like the Tash Rook, Tash Helix and the Tash Hidden Rook, are all trending for edgier ear curations. Last year I introduced the latter two piercings, and they have since become very popular because they create the effect of jewelry emerging out of cartilage in unexpected ways.

Q:

ANY TIPS FOR HOW TO PULL OFF MULTIPLE EARRINGS ON YOUR DAY? My jewelry is designed to be versatile and meant to complement any bride or groom’s style. Choosing a symmetrical or asymmetrical look is a matter of personal preference—and both can work well on your wedding day. The goal is to balance three forces: skin tone, personal aesthetic, and the weight and style of the jewelry that sit next to each other. Layering jewelry in the ear is an art. Each piece should have a similar metal tone and style of stone setting; tell a story; and be in visual balance with the pieces it's placed next to.

SILK AND SONDER Amid the hustle and bustle of wedding planning, it’s important to carve out time to decompress and center yourself. If you’re new to journaling, the blank page can feel daunting. Silk and Sonder has made it easier, reimagining the practice with thought-provoking prompts. Sign up for its monthly subscription, and journals will appear on your doorstep.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE OF YOUR WEDDING SHOULD YOU GET PIERCINGS? It’s a good idea to get piercings well in advance of your day. Earlobe piercings typically heal in six to eight weeks, but cartilage and other piercings can take several months. If you're getting a piercing specifically for your wedding, consider going with a stud earring over a hoop earring for the initial piercing. With a stud earring, you can usually change the front piece while leaving in the post. This trick will allow you to wear a bigger, more decorative earring on your wedding day without compromising the healing process.

ZZ PLANT

Even the least horticulturally minded duos will be able to help a philodendron thrive. The heart-shaped beauty only has to be watered every one to two weeks. Expert tip: As a general rule, it’s better to underwater plants. In fact, overwatering is one of the easiest ways to kill a philodendron. Instead of keeping a strict schedule, it’s best to water only when needed. Always check the soil before watering; if it’s still moist, wait to water.

The snake plant is a lowmaintenance houseplant every novice grower needs. Not only does it claim a top spot in NASA’s Clean Air Study, but the snake plant is also a succulent that tolerates low light. What does this mean if you’re brand-new to taking care of plants? You can forget to water it and put it almost anywhere in your home—and it thrives!

A perfect choice for beginner plant parents, the ZZ plant is a drought-tolerant succulent. Give a ZZ plant a spot in medium indirect light and water about every three weeks when the potting soil is completely dry. Like every good relationship, a stable environment is key. ZZ plants thrive when they're kept in a space that's 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit—extreme temp fluctuations can stress them out. Pro tip: Don't place them near vents, radiators or exterior doors.

Q+A

Christian Siriano The designer is back in the wedding game with both a new bridal fashion collection and a luxe mattress (hello, registry must-have). Below, he talks about his inspiration, the importance of inclusivity and the trends he’s loving right now.

Q:

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO GET BACK INTO BRIDAL FASHION AFTER A HIATUS? This year felt like the perfect time to get back into bridal since all of our brides who couldn’t get married last year are finally walking down the aisle. I was so inspired by their resilience and wanted to create gowns that would reflect their happiness and excitement for their upcoming celebrations.

Q: 48

WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS COLLECTION? I wanted to make sure there was a gown or suit for anyone and everyone

Vera Wang is synonymous with celebrating life’s biggest moments, so the designer's foray into festive sparkling wine should come as no surprise. A fresh take on premium Italian prosecco, Vera Wang Party offers crisp notes of apple, stone fruit and citrus. Packaged in a sleek, graffitiinspired bottle, this affordable bubbly makes for a chic wedding party proposal gift—and is otherwise a toasting essential. $25, VeraWang.com

21WIN_NEWNOW.L [P]_128176.indd 48

INCLUSIVITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN PART OF YOUR BRAND ETHOS. HOW DOES THIS NEW COLLECTION SPEAK TO THAT? I want every bride to find a piece for their wedding day that makes them feel amazing. Since every body is different, size inclusivity is very important to me—it’s all about feeling comfortable. That’s why my collection is available in sizes 0 to 28.

Q:

ANY WEDDING FASHION TRENDS YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW? I’m definitely seeing a lot more color in weddings. I love when a bride trusts me with her vision and allows me to create something bold and unique.

Q:

WHAT’S YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE SHOPPING ADVICE? It’s not the outfit itself but how you feel when you put it on. Your attire should reflect you and not other people's expectations of what a wedding dress should look like. You deserve to feel chic and confident.

Q:

ANGELA BASSETT + COURTNEY B. VANCE Yale brought together these college lovebirds, who wed in 1997.

Q:

TELL US ABOUT THE MATTRESS! WHY DID YOU LAUNCH IT IN TANDEM WITH YOUR COLLECTION? From a design perspective, the bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom, but we also know a good night's sleep is so important to your overall health and wellness. I found inspiration working on my new bridal and interior design collections and chose to partner with Beautyrest to create the perfect wedding-themed mattress for newlyweds. The ruffle pattern across the top of the Beautyrest by Christian Siriano mattress mimics elements from my new bridal collection.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER + MATTHEW BRODERICK Family has always been at the center of this couple’s relationship—Broderick’s brother played matchmaker and his sister officiated their big day in May 1997.

looking for the perfect piece for their big day. I think a lot of wedding traditions are becoming outdated, and more people are taking risks, which is why I created a versatile collection that removes masculine and feminine labels. My dresses and suits are also meant to move. Weddings this year aren’t only a celebration of love and marriage, but also a celebration of being surrounded by your friends and family on such a special day, which wasn’t possible a year ago.

We’re predicting genderless bands are here to stay for a few reasons: They’re inherently inclusive, tend to be more affordable than classic bridal sets (depending on the style) and, in these post-COVID times, they’re easy to sanitize. The newest designs are bolder than ever. Diamond-encrusted cigar bands, signet

rings and eternity bands give the standard solid metal band a serious fashion upgrade. Have your heart set on an elaborate style but also don’t want to forgo a traditional engagement ring with a center stone? You’ve still got options. We love the idea of wearing your engagement ring and wedding band on separate hands, or wearing your engagement ring on certain days and your wedding band on others. The bottom line: You don’t have to stick to a classic wedding ring set if you’re feeling something different.

TREND WATC H

They may be the “It” stones of 2021, but emeralds have always been one of history’s most sought-after jewels. Since the time of ancient Greece, when emeralds were believed to be the sacred stone of the goddess Aphrodite, they’ve been a symbol of eternal love. Ancient Arab, Hindu and Spanish physicians even used emeralds as protection against poison and disease. Magical powers aside, these vibrant green gemstones are associated with new beginnings and, not to mention, are undeniably gorgeous. In modern times, emerald is the traditional birthstone for May and the astrological sign of Cancer.

Ignore gendered sizing. If you have your heart set on a ring that isn’t available in your size, ask if your jeweler can make your preferred design to fit you.

PRO TIP

’S NOT

These green gemstones are stunning but fragile. Since emeralds are softer than diamonds and have more inclusions (internal flaws), they also have more breaking points than other gemstones. But don’t let that deter you from wearing your emerald ring—just make sure you care for it correctly. Keep it in a case separate from your other jewelry and never use commercial cleaners or chemicals to polish it. You’ll also want to avoid hitting your green sparkler against hard surfaces to prevent damage.

We’ve seen thousands of dresses in our 25 years of sitting in the front row at Bridal Fashion Week. Our biggest takeaway? Wedding attire has changed a lot in the last two-and-a-half decades. And while the days of cookiecutter gowns and pure white palettes are long gone, scores of memorable looks have hit the runways in the meantime. Here, a look back at some of the hottest—and most revolutionary— wedding fashion trends, from 1996 to the present day.

Dresses with removable skirts, trains, sleeves and toppers are the dress of the moment in 2021. A huge plus of a convertible dress? You get one look for your ceremony and another for your reception—without a full wardrobe change.

Dare to bare. See-through dresses shook up the bridal fashion runways. Once considered too risqué for wedding attire, totally sheer gowns with strategically placed appliqués made their way into the mainstream.

Two-piece gowns with crop tops made their debut in the mid2010s. The edgy, midriff-baring look became the preferred silhouette of boho brides looking to pull off a more carefree wedding style.

STYLE + PLANNING

W E D D I N G PA R T Y Traditions for bridesmaids and groomsmen have been cast aside in favor of more inclusive customs—hello wedding party—and we’re here for it.

THE COUPLE There’s a good chance you’ve been fielding wedding advice since you announced your engagement—here’s a chance to go your own way!

TRADITION

TRADITION

TRADITION

Everyone in the wedding party must match.

Bridesmaids stand on the left, groomsmen stand on the right.

Flower girls and ring bearers are honors given to children.

TWIST

TWIST

TWIST

Mismatched fashion is all the rage (and beloved by your VIPs). Choose a palette, a fabric, or a series of styles (long gowns, jumpsuits) and let your friends infuse their own style into their look. This goes for shoes and other accessories too.

Today’s wedding parties are comprised of all kinds of loved ones who mean something to each half of the duo. Stand where it makes the most sense— i.e. your brother will look stellar in a suit sandwiched between your best girls.

What’s cuter than a Flower Grandma? We’ll wait. Positions of honor should go to the people who have championed you and your love story. Maybe that’s a bow-tie-clad nephew, or maybe it’s your grandparents who have spent decades together.

TRADITION

You can’t see each other on the wedding day before your “I dos.” TWIST

Get ready together—really. Or, if you like the idea of a grand reveal, opt for a first look with your photographer in tow. This first-look concept works for any and everyone, from grandparents to The One. TRADITION

The bride wears white.

FROM LEFT: ALLISON KUHN CREATIVE; HEIRLUME PHOTOGRAPHY

70

TWIST

Wear whatever color you want— red, blue, gold. And if a dress isn’t your vibe, skip it. Jumpsuits, shorts à la Olivia Palermo or separates are fair game. So are multiple outfits. TRADITION

Jet off on your honeymoon immediately following the reception. TWIST

Take your honeymoon when it works for you. With travel restrictions in place, couples embraced alternatives in 2020/2021. Escape for a mini-moon at a local hotel or celebrate your first anniversary with a bucket-list trip. Remember, there’s no one way to moon.

JUST SKIP IT It’s totally okay to pass on the things that don’t feel right to you. If you’re not in favor of these age-old rituals, you don’t have to come up with an alternative—just leave them out altogether.

CEREMONY

REGISTRY

Vows must be exchanged for it to be official, but everything else— from a unity ceremony to the music—is completely up to you.

Registering for gifts is the to-be-weds’ ultimate perk. This is your chance to get exactly what you want and need for your new life together— act accordingly.

TRADITION

A minister or clergy member must officiate.

TRADITION

TWIST

Your best friend, your uncle or a nondenominational officiant can preside over your wedding ceremony. You can include religious readings or poems, a ring blessing, or you can make guacamole in lieu of lighting candles. Bottom line: you do you. TRADITION

You have to walk down the aisle.

72

TWIST

Ask guests to process to you or enter from the sides of a ceremony in the round. You can also consider taking the aisle together. There are so many right ways to enter and exit. Same is true for your escort—choose the person or people most important to you and this moment. TRADITION

The ceremony comes before cocktail hour. TWIST

Keep guests guessing with cocktail hour before your “I dos.” Invite everyone to gather early for spritzers and light bites, exchange vows and then hit the dance floor to celebrate!

TOASTS AT THE RECEPTION

21WIN_STYPLAN_Opener.L [P]_128211.indd 72

RECEPTION Perhaps the best part of the wedding day, the reception holds endless possibilities for personalization and fun. Lean into your vibe!

TRADITION

TRADITION

TRADITION

You must hire a band or DJ for entertainment.

Every wedding needs a cake.

The first dance is sacred.

TWIST

TWIST

We’re partial to cake, but stand firm on a grand finish to the night, whatever that is. Cupcakes, doughnut walls, help-yourself cookie bars and handheld pies are all excellent sweet alternatives to a tiered confection. If you love cake but don’t want to cut it in front of everyone, skip this ritual, or cut the cake in secret while your guests are enjoying cocktail hour.

Invite all your guests to open the dance floor and forgo the spotlight. Instead of parent dances, ask all married couples to take the floor for an anniversary dance (as the song plays, the DJ asks couples to leave the floor based on wedded years). If you like the idea of the ritual but don’t want to dance, opt for a duet, a lightsaber duel or a hula-hooping contest instead.

TWIST

We love a packed dance floor as much as the next guy, but unexpected entertainment is the best kind of wedding surprise. Opt for a roving magician during cocktail hour, a single electric guitarist or a Broadway dance number. There are plenty of ways to delight guests—like photo booths, tarot card readers or synchronized swimmers.

A SPOTLIT CAKE CUTTING

THE GARTER + BOUQUET TOSS

You have to register for wedding china. TWIST

You can register for whatever you want. If you want china, add it to your wish list. But if not, ask for a new record player or a robotic vacuum instead. TRADITION

You can’t ask for cash. TWIST

Yes, you can! And you should if it will help fulfill your newlywed dreams. If you’re hoping to take an epic trip or buy a new home, cash can make these dreams a reality. The Knot Registry makes it easy to ask for money. TRADITION

You shouldn’t ask for anything expensive. TWIST

Group gifting is a win-win for guests and the couple of honor. If you’re in the market for something pricey, like a Big Green Egg cooker for the backyard, add it to your registry. You may have a very generous relative or, better yet, your college pals can band together to make your BBQ fantasies a reality.

POSITIVELY PERSONAL “It was important to us that we didn’t replicate other Indian weddings, but instead create a weekend and series of celebrations that uniquely reflected us as a couple. The end result was a Serbian x Indian wedding, or ‘Serbindian’ if you will,” says Alex of how the couple honored their heritage. WELCOME GIFTS Curated to represent the couple’s story, the boxes included caramels from Alex’s home state of Montana; candles from Colorado, where they met; and one of the couple’s favorite snacks: spicy cashews. LET’S DANCE For the sangeet, Alex and Raj hired dancers to perform “Indian dances and a traditional Serbian Kolo dance.” PLEASE BE SEATED The escort cards were “lotus-blossom capiz tea lights, which sat on acrylic lily pads with our guests’ names calligraphed on each.”

C

alifornia’s Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa holds a special spot in the hearts of Alexandra (Alex) (a physician scientist, M.D. Ph.D.) and Raj (the founder of a tech company). “Raj has been visiting Rancho Valencia for at least 20 years and we have celebrated many milestones there, so it feels like a second home for us,” says Alex. As such, when the pandemic made it clear that a wedding in India, Montana or Chicago (all of which were in the running) wouldn’t be possible, it felt like kismet for them to welcome guests to the property, where Raj proposed, during their eight-event “Passage to India meets SoCal garden-chic” wedding weekend. And they still memorialized those other locales; copper accents nodded to the Montana mining industry, while their stationery included Taj Mahal details. — HAN NAH N OWAC K

FULL OF MEANING “Our entire wedding was a celebration of tradition and the marriage of different cultures, religion and familial history,” says Alex. For their Serbian Orthodox ceremony, the couple commissioned a custom stefana (a Serbian wedding crown) that they hope to pass down to their children. During the ceremony, they also lit candles last used by Alex’s parents in their marriage ceremony more than 40 years ago. STYLISH SWEETS Edible paper that mirrored the stationery embellished the center of Alex and Raj’s mixed-berry almond cake. SIGNATURE SIPS The couple served two signature cocktails: a strawberry sparkler with St. Germain, sparkling wine, lemon and strawberry; and blueberry vodka with pear puree and cherries.

“We tried to infuse special meaning and significance in every element of the wedding,” says Alex. A lotus motif was one way the couple did that. To indicate guests’ seats at dinner, plaster blocks carved with lotus designs, representing Alex and Raj growing as a couple, sat atop each place setting.

Lotus flowers grow in muddy waters and can survive in harsh conditions for years, yet they produce stunning blooms—much like our journey on the way to true love. -Alex

MINIMAL PALETTE Bridget and Dapo’s color scheme consisted of whites and ivory with hints of taupe and greenery. ALL TOGETHER Bridget and Dapo sat all of their 25 guests at one long table for dinner. It was decorated with a “runner” of roses, ranunculus, anemones, lisianthus, trick dianthus and green viburnum. DRESSED TO THE NINES Given that Bridget is a fashion designer, it was no surprise that sleek attire filled the day. Her column wedding dress was a “statement piece on its own and exuded my style perfectly.”

ridget Awosika (a womens wear designer) and Dapo Olagundoye’s (an agro-commodity trader) wedding planning journey was a globetrotting affair. The couple met (thanks to a chance run-in at an ATM) and reside in Lagos, Nigeria, but flew stateside for their nuptials. In late 2019, they wed with a traditional Nigerian minimony in Washington, DC, and planned to celebrate later with a Tuscan-inspired California wedding. Though the pandemic forced Bridget and Dapo to pivot to an event in Houston, the duo still brought European flair to their sequel wedding: The second vow exchange took place at a 15th-century French chapel. With a planning journey that took them all over the world, it’s no wonder their best advice for to-be-weds is to “be very flexible and keep an open mind!”— H N

Celebrating family was key to Bridget and Dapo. “Being able to have my sister Sarah plan my wedding, wearing her veil from 12 years prior, having my sister Anna style my entire wedding day look, hosting the wedding in Dapo’s family’s hometown and having our parents wear matching ceremonial Nigerian attire were ways that we honored our family and made it meaningful to all of us!”

Family is very important to us and it was important to celebrate our journey to the altar alongside our family and include them in the celebration in very meaningful ways. - Bridget

FARMWORTHY FAREWELL “My uncle owns a 1958 Ford tractor and we couldn’t think of a more fitting way to end the night than to drive off on the tractor through a tunnel of fireworks,” says Alex. amily and legacy were at the center of Alexandria (Alex) Noble (29 and an event planner and designer) and Karl Williams’ (30 and a sponsor contracts analyst) wedding. Even the ground where the couple tied the knot carried immense meaning: The day took place on Alex’s grandparents’ homestead in North Carolina. “Their love story on the farm began in 1958,” says Alex. “Their loving and devoted marriage of more than 60 years stands as an example to us. Exchanging vows on their farm was our way to honor them for instilling the importance of family into us.” Beyond choosing a special locale, the couple also settled on a Southern, pheasant-inspired aesthetic because to them, the South represents a warm and welcoming place that is defined only by the people in your company. — H N

“A Southern tradition we followed was burying the bourbon,” says Alex. “Legend says that if you bury a bottle of unopened bourbon upside down at the ceremony site, within one month of your wedding, it will keep rain away. You are to dig it up after the ceremony and each take a swig from the bottle. In the end, it did actually rain the morning of the wedding, but cleared in time for setup.”

We buried a half-gallon of Woodford Reserve that was mostly consumed at the reception. However, we saved a little of our wedding bourbon to enjoy on our one-year anniversary. -Alex

FILLED WITH LADYBUGS Megan and Daniela threaded a ladybug motif throughout the nuptials as a way to honor those not present at the event. “My grandmother always said ladybugs were good luck,” Megan explains. “And when our dog Olive passed, we asked her to come back as a ladybug.” Daniela’s mom gave the couple ladybug pins in remembrance of Olive. PERSONAL NOTES “We wrote handwritten notes to each guest that we placed at their table setting,” says Megan. “We wanted to make sure they knew how grateful we were that they were in our lives. Especially as a gay couple, the support of family and friends has been the greatest blessing for us.” MODERN RINGS Instead of traditional engagement rings, the couple chose simple eternity bands.

agazine clippings inspired the backyard wedding Daniela Acosta (30 and a business owner) and Megan Lane (34 and an administrator) planned to celebrate their nine-year relationship. “We found a floral centerpiece we loved in a magazine and went from there,” says the couple. With that specific aesthetic as the foundation for their big day, Megan and Daniela got to work designing and DIYing the rest of their event. “We wanted the style to feel elegant, refined and appropriate for a garden wedding, without being fussy.” Since they couldn’t find the perfect black farm tables they envisioned, Megan and her dad built two for the dinner party-esque occasion. Furthermore, when the stationer the couple originally hired fell through, Daniela’s sister saved the day and designed all of their paper. — H N

hen the pandemic forced Jessica (Jess) Zayas (28 and a consultant) and Neal Raaz (31 and a financial systems manager) to cancel their 120-person wedding, the couple decided to get married on their front doorstep and consider having a big celebration later on. “With all the uncertainty brewing, we wanted to get legally married as soon as possible,” says Jess. GET THE LOOK: COURTESY OF VENDORS

While canceling a wedding just one month out is an unimaginably hard decision, Jess and Neal were blessed with a group of vendors who gifted them a meaningful elopement instead. One of the vendors who came to help them celebrate was a typewriter poet, who asked the duo a few questions before giving them a custom piece of writing to reflect their relationship.

Though I yearn for the day that we can celebrate with family, our elopement truly felt like we were doing something for ourselves and we could cherish the quality time on our special day together. -Jess

SEASIDE SUNSET When Caila Quinn and Nick Burrello shared a slow dance overlooking the ocean in Sarasota just after getting engaged, little did they know that a year and a half later, they’d be twirling as newlyweds to “A Million Dreams” in the very same charming seaside town. love of travel is something that Caila Quinn (29 and a lifestyle blogger) and Nick Burrello (28 and works in private equity technology) share, so it was only natural that the duo set their sights on Lake Como, Italy, for their wedding. Despite having to pivot their plans because of the pandemic, Caila and Nick found a way to bring the romance of Italy stateside by exchanging vows at the Venetian-inspired Ca’ d’Zan mansion at the Ringling Museum of Art. With the decision to celebrate at the former home of circus magnate John Ringling and his wife Mable, Caila and Nick let the Ringlings’ story inform their own day. “The romantic in me had a soft spot for their relationship and their love for travel, Italy and art,” Caila says. “These interests are pillars of our story, too, so it felt like the perfect place to say, ‘I do!’” To bring travel- and art-inspired nods into the day, Caila and Nick commissioned a sign made to look like a vintage travel poster and chose a song from The Greatest Showman for their first dance.

TIE THE KNOT In her self-penned vows, Caila promised to “be honest with my heart and gentle with yours. To be by your side not only through life’s happiest moments, but also the ones that no one should go through alone.”

To match the sunsetthemed palette, Caila wore Carrie Bradshaw–worthy yellow heels.

BROADWAY Caila surprised Nick by having a flash mob of Broadway stars sing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” by Frankie Valli, at the ceremony.

21WIN_RW_CelebWedding.L [P]_128018.indd 112

INVITATIONS Wax seals and ribbons finished off the invites, which featured a drawing of the venue to get guests excited about visiting Florida.

9/22/21 11:06 AM

REAL LOVE CAKE Portuguese tiles informed the pattern on the bottom of the raspberry-filled cake with sugar flowers.

DINNER “My dream was to have long family-style tables with candles as a nod to our warm Italian theme.” SIGNAGE The couple plans to hang the Art Deco–style welcome poster in their newlywed home.

NEUTRAL FOUNDATION The duo kept the linens neutral “like a blank canvas to paint on” so the other reception details would pop.

113

FLORALS The gardeninspired centerpieces included peonies, roses, delphiniums, ranunculus and lisianthus.

Within the arched columns of the garden courtyard, Nick saw me in my white dress for the first time. Surrounded by artistic masterpieces, this moment between the two of us was its own work of art. He cried, I cried, and it was perfect.

-Caila

PAY IT FORWARD In lieu of favors, Caila and Nick gave guests “a donation in their honor to sponsor two children for a year with Save the Children.”

INGREDIENTS

TRADITION To honor Caila’s Filipina heritage, the couple included a cord-and-veil ritual in their ceremony.

WEDDING GOWNS 101 Searching for the one? Study up on everything you need to know before you hit the salon.

A GUIDE TO DRESS SILHOUETTES

Ball Gown

Perfect for the bride looking to make a statement, there’s nothing subtle about a ball gown. This classic silhouette has a fitted bodice and a voluminous full skirt.

A-line

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a skirt that flares out in—you guessed it—an A shape. Consider it a halfway point between a sheath and a ball gown.

Mermaid

Va-va-voom. This sultry silhouette has a fitted bodice, waist and hips, and dramatically flares out at the knee. It’s a great option if you want to show off your curves.

Trumpet

Sheath

This slim silhouette A toned-down version skims over the body, of the mermaid, the falling straight to skirt of this gown flares the floor below the out just below the hips, hips. What a sheath creating a semi-full dress lacks in volume, shape (like the bell it makes up for in of a trumpet) without versatility—it works with nearly every fabric. any extra volume.

Empire

A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.

S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.

H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

2 The water is so clear in The Bahamas that divers experience visibility of up to 200 feet. 3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands.

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 4

5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse duty-free bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6

7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera.

Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 9

Barbados 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

December to April

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers. 3

First made more than 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors. 4

Bajans (as Barbados residents are called) are crazy about cricket and golf.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks.

If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise. 9

10 Dance the night away in “irie” oblivion to live soca, reggae or calypso at Harbour Lights or hot spot Red Door Lounge. SHUTTERSTOCK

St. Lucia AT A GLANCE LANGUAGE SPOKEN

December to April

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago.

Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 2

3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast.

Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 7

8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your partner loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 6

7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay.

While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 8

9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.

Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves that have never seen the light of day! 10

LAST LOOK

We wanted our wedding to focus on our pure love for each other, so we kept the celebration minimal. No decorations, no seating, no frills to distract us. However, one thing that was important to us to include was the jumping of the broom. We wanted to pay tribute to the struggles of our ancestors who came before us and have our families and friends see that we would not be where we are without their love and guidance.
