Galliano man dies in single vehicle crash Thanksgiving morning
Grand Bois – Shortly before 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Troopers with Troop C began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash on LA W Hwy. 24 near the Grand Bois community that claimed the life of 24year-old Jaydon Galliano of Galliano. The preliminary investigation indicated Galliano was traveling eastbound on LA 24 in a 2004 Cadillac CTS when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle ran off of the road to the right and struck a tree. The vehicle then struck a second tree and rolled over onto the driver’s side. Galliano was wearing his seat belt but suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is unknown as a factor in the crash and standard toxicology tests are pending through the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Although the cause of this crash remains See Crash Page 3-A

“Additionally, this proposal includes funding to enhance plans for the long-term sustainability of the entire length of Louisiana barrier islands,” the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation said Monday. Florida is receiving $53 million for seven projects, including $16 million to protect coastal forest and wetlands along the Lower Suwanee River and Big Bend coast, the foundation said in a news release. Nearly $49 million will go to eight Alabama projects, including $22.5 million to create and restore artificial reefs. Texas will get $19 million for five projects, including $6 million to protect 575 acres of coastal habitat in Cameron County, next to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge’s Bahia Grande Unit. The foundation is getting $2.5 billion over five years for restoration projects. The money’s coming from criminal damages paid by BP PLC and drilling company Transocean Deepwater Inc. Mild weather and falling gasoline prices helped Thanksgiving travelers get where they were going while saving a few bucks. Airports around the country were busy Wednesday, leading to more than 1,500 delayed flights by early afternoon on the East Coast. Only about 75 flights were canceled, however, with about 40 of those in San Francisco, according to tracking service FlightAware. “It was a good day. The weather was very cooperative,” said American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein. “It’s busy, but this Sunday and Monday will be busier travel days for us.” Holiday revelers traveling by car were able to take advantage of a big decline in gasoline prices caused by lower oil prices.

The nationwide average pump price on Wednesday was $2.60 a gallon, down 25 cents from a month ago. GasBuddy, a price-comparison site, said prices were under $2 a gallon in nine states, with several others hovering just above that mark. “We will see the national average go lower because there are still drops in the pipeline,” said GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan. He estimated that U.S. motorists are spending $100 million less each day on gasoline than they were a month ago. See Travel Page 3-A

to take steps to prevent house fires. As temperatures fall, the threat of fire rises, local fire chiefs said. “Our main concern is portable space heaters,” said Bayou Cane Fire Chief Ken Himel. “Fires often occur when they are placed too close to combustible materials. They are space heaters. Give them space. We recommend 3 feet in all directions.” Traditional space heaters with exposed electric coils have also been connected with fires over the years when used improperly, said Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Benton Foret. “For individuals needing a portable source for heat, the oil-filled heater is a more recent option available that does not have an exposed heat source,” Foret said. Another source of cold-season fires stems from fireplaces, fire officials said. “While these fixtures add a warm and cozy atmosphere to the home, residents are cautioned to only use fireplaces as designed,” Foret said. “For wood-burning fire places, follow manufacturer instructions on manufactured units, have the chimney inspected and serviced regularly and only burn wood like oak and pecan readily found in this area as fuel in the fire place. Woods, like pine, willow and other sap-filled woods can create deposits in the chimney and increase the potential for chimney fires.” See Caution Page 3-A

Coast Guard investigates oil pipeline spill in Louisiana
DULAC, La. (AP) — The Coast Guard says it is investigating the cause and impact of a small oil spill in a Louisiana marsh. A news release Tuesday said a controlled burn Monday got rid of nearly 1,700 gallons of oil that had escaped from a pipeline near Dulac. The line is owned by Texas Petroleum Investment Co. The Coast Guard says it was notified of the spill Nov. 15, and a cleanup company put a floating barrier around the spill and sorbents onto the oil the same day. The fire was set to get rid of an estimated 1,680 gallons of crude remaining in the marsh. It burned about three hours. The Coast Guard says the impact to wildlife and the environment has not yet been determined.

mid-December. The bridge was hit by a crane barge Oct. 12. Crews have begun installing concrete barriers on the westbound side of the bridge in preparation for the lane opening. Transportation Secretary Shawn Watson said getting one lane open in each direction will not solve travel problems, but it will help until repairs are completed. State officials have said it will probably be January before repairs are completed.

under investigation, Troopers want to remind motorists of the importance of making safe driving decisions behind the wheel. Distractions, impairment, and fatigued driving continue to be factors in preventable crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers want to remind you that Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.

If a gas-fired heating system is being used, Himel strongly recommends using carbon monoxide detectors in addition to working smoke alarms. “If a fire place is being used we recommend any type of spark arrestor and make sure the hearth area remains clear of combustibles,” Himel said. According to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, fires have claimed the lives of three adults and four children since Oct. 15. The majority of those fires involved the absence of working smoke detectors. Although fried turkey may be tasty, it also could be hazardous, Himel said. “Although this is a south Louisiana tradition, it can be quite dan-
gerous if improperly done,” Himel said. “Do not attempt this on wooden decks or patios. If a fire would occur, this could be disastrous. Stay clear of your home a safe distance to avoid fire spread. Do not overfill your pot with oil and never attempt to fry a frozen turkey.” Residents who have gas fireplaces, gas-fired stoves, ovens, water heaters, driers and other equipment should monitor carbon monoxide that can potentially accumulate, Foret said. “Carbon monoxide is nicknamed the silent killer because it is undetectable to humans,” Foret said. “If a CO detector sounds off in a building occupants are to evacuate the building and contact 911. The fire department will respond and determine if there is a presence of carbon monoxide in the building and take appropriate actions such as isolating the device and ventilating the occupancy.” Despite how tempting it might be during cold days, never use cooking equipment as a heating source, Foret said. “Appliances are not designed for this type of use and prolonged operation can cause damage and failures of certain appliances,” he said. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Dan Copp can be reached at 8572202 or at dan.copp@houmatoday.com. Monday’s grants are the sixth round and bring the total so far to
$1.3 billion. The spill was off Louisiana, which suffered the worst damage and has received more than $625 million for 13 projects. Alabama has received more than $195 million for 32 projects; Florida more than $160 million for 33 projects, and Texas more than $150 million for 47 projects. F o u n d a t i o n spokesman Rob Blumenthal said Mississippi, which has received nearly $140 million for 18 projects, did not have any new projects considered for this round of grants. The smallest grant awarded Monday was $100,000 to remove invasive species and debris from Hurricane Harvey and then plant native vegetation at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center within the Port Aransas Nature Preserve. “Hurricane Harvey destroyed two miles of boardwalk and uprooted significant stands of wetland vegetation in the preserve that settled as debris, smothering existing wetland vegetation and causing significant degradation of coastal marsh habitat,” a news release said. “The debris has prevented the regrowth of marsh vegetation and limited the flow of freshwater to the area.”

AAA forecasted the busiest Thanksgiving travel period since 2005. Most people who traveled at least 50 miles from home went by car, according to the auto club. AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair credited a strong economy and rising consumer confidence, “and when we have a little time built into our schedules, we take advantage of it.” And what helped was that much of the country was blessed with mild weather. The busiest day ever for Transportation Security Administration airport screeners was the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2004, but seven of the top 10 days occurred during summer, including five days this past June.

Former priest convicted of raping altar boy dies in prison
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A former Catholic priest has died in prison while serving a life sentence for repeatedly raping an altar boy. Louisiana state corrections spokesman Ken Pastorick tells The Houma Courier that 82year-old Robert Lester “Bobby” Melancon died of natural causes this month. Melancon was convicted in 1996 of the aggravated rape of an altar boy. Prosecutors said then that the boy, who turned 19 during the four-day trial, was abused from 1985 to 1991 while Melancon was a priest in Terrebonne Parish. His lawyers have said the allegations were false and came about after the victim learned that Melancon had paid $30,000 to settle a separate child sex abuse lawsuit. He was serving time at a minimum-security prison near Shreveport when he died. He maintained his innocence. Information from: The Courier, http://www.houmatoday.com

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The Widow’s Mite can inspire the spirit of love, caring and thanksgiving
Some gospels have their own special identity. For example, when someone says, “The Good Samaritan” everyone knows the story of the man who was robbed and left halfdead. The clergy passed on the other side of the street but the Samaritan stopped and took pity on the man and looked after his needs. Another example is “The Widow’s Mite.” (The Mite was a small Greek coin worth about a couple of cents). Jesus observed the people putting money into the temple treasury and declared the gift of the widow (her two small coins) was worth more than gifts of the rich people. This might sounds a little simplified but I believe that two types of people exist in our world: takers and givers. The takers go through their lives always on the lookout for what they can get. No matter what situation they find themselves in, the thought that is always, “What can I get out of this? What’s in it for me?” This type of person may appear to do many good things for people, but the motivation for their actions is anything but good. They are willing to do a favor if they can get something out of it. They might not be looking for some type of material reward. Maybe they are looking for praise and affirmation and want you to think highly of them. Their behavior is infectious and it’s riddled with disease. These people do not give or love freely. Their giving always has some strings attached to their gifts so they end up gaining something for themselves. In their imaginary bookkeeping, they have one column for all of the kind things they do for others. Then in another column they record all the favors that others do for them. If the second column is shorter, they want to be repaid. The second group are the givers. This kind of person spontaneously perceives where and when people need something. They do this out of their sensitivity to others. The givers do not keep mental scores about the favors they receive or on the favors they give. They don’t look on everything from the viewpoint of what they can get out of it. Givers are people who are following the basic commandment to love. Love does not count the cost. The widow was a giver. She did not count the cost of her giving. In fact, she gave everything, all she had to live on. Jesus was amazed at seeing this woman drop her two small coins into the temple treasury. Generosity is not a privilege of the rich. Everyone can practice generosity, since it deals with what each one has. Jesus gives us contrasting pictures of what it means to be a religious person. The Scribes were takers who looked out for themselves and in their greed looked down on other people. They saw religion as an opportunity for gain, not as service. The givers like the widow generously give their whole lives for the
service of God. Their humility and authenticity deepened their spirit of generosity. The widow saw her religion as a way of life. It inspired her to generosity with all that she had. The rich people’s gift at the treasury was given out of what was left over. The widow’s gift was given out of what she needed. The author C.S. Lewis says, “I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe
rule is to give more than we can spare.” The followers of Christ should have a spirit of generosity. It is in our giving that our faith finds its expression. Love that is never expressed is not love. Generosity that remains within the heart does nothing to help others. May the poor widow inspire us to look deeply within ourselves and call forth the spirit of caring, love and thankfulness that is the mark of all true Christians.
