Derelict vessel removal project completed

The Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District recently completed a project which removed 12 large derelict vessels from Bayou Lafourche. Through an Intergovernmental Agreement, the Bayou Lafourche Derelict Vessel Removal project was funded by the Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District

The new Lafourche Parish president will build its own leadership team, keeping just one of the previous administration’s department heads. The Parish Council voted unanimously last week to approve all five of Parish President Archie Chaisson’s appointments. Three of Chaisson’s appointees had previously led parish departments while the other two are newcomers to local government. Ahead of the votes, Councilman Daniel Lorraine said he found all of the appointees qualified to serve based on their resumes and believed the council should give the parish president his choices.

and Lafourche Parish Government in an effort to improve the water quality and provide a safer waterway for recreational users. Bollinger Shipyards also played a critical role in the project’s progress by providing a bayouside staging area at their Lockport facility. A total of 12 boats, between the Hwy. 182 bridge in Raceland and the Intracoastal Canal in Larose, were carefully removed and discarded. In addition to the boats being safely removed, several hundred gallons of diesel within the vessels were syphoned and discarded by the U.S. Coast Guard. The work was completed by Couvillion Group LLC well before the deadline and within budget. The Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District has taken steps to prevent the future abandoning of vessels in the bayou.

In addition to an ordinance that holds owners responsible for the removal, the bayou is inspected quarterly for abandoned vessels and other obstructions. Residents are encouraged to contact the BLFWD at 985-447-7155 if they observe dumping and/or derelict vessels in the bayou.

The beauty of sports are that they unify people and unite them for a common cause. They’re maybe the only thing in our world that can bring all people — of any race, religion or creed — together to pull for something or to believe in a greater good. It’s no secret by now that LSU won the National Championship last week — the cherry atop a magical season that fans will never soon forget. But in our sweet, precious bayou, this victory and season is about more than football. It’s about more than a trophy. It’s about more than beating Alabama or being No. 1. It’s about pride and love for one of our own. It’s about redemption. It’s about respect. It’s a lesson to all young men and women in our community that literally EVERYTHING is possible and can be accomplished … NO MATTER HOW FAR you’ve fallen or NO MATTER HOW DIM the light currently looks in your life. Ed Orgeron embodies all of those things and is literal proof in the power of second chances, personal development and triumph.

THE JOURNEY WAS FILLED WITH BUMPS The Coach O we see today is a byproduct of the mistakes and lessons of his past. He got started in the 1980s, then ascended to the University of Miami in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. But there were personal problems, issues with alcohol and an eventual arrest. Instead of continuing to climb the ladder, Orgeron was sent back to the bayou for a one-year hiatus and some time searching his soul. Orgeron credits this time as saving his life, saying he needed time in our area to find humility and to refocus. In 1994, he got back into the game, coaching at Nicholls. He then catapulted back into the big-time, going to Syracuse (1995-97), then to USC (1998-2004). At USC, Orgeron became a household name — one of the best assistant coaches in the country. He helped build some of the best teams in the history of the sport. Others took notice. After flirtations with a couple of schools, Orgeron became a head coach in 2005 with Ole Miss. It didn’t work out. At Ole Miss, Orgeron tried to do too much.

Golden Meadow police chief resigns

Golden Meadow’s Police Department will soon have new leadership after its chief stepped down last week. Mayor Joey Bouziga confirmed Reggie Pitre resigned from the position in early January and his last official day on the job was last Wednesday. Pitre served as chief since his election in 2012 and has worked for the department since 2009. The Town Council has 20 days to appoint an interim police chief who will finish Pitre’s term which expires at the end of the year, Bouziga said. Pitre could not be reached for comment. Although Bouziga declined to comment about Pitre’s resignation, he said he wished the former chief well. “His performance was good,” the mayor said. “I wish him luck.” Chett Chiasson, executive director of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, confirmed on Friday that Pitre accepted a position with the Harbor Police. “We made a point at the Port Commission to hire four new people,” Chaisson said. “One of them was Reggie. Two arrested after agents discover cocaine and marijuana at Galliano residence

Two people were arrested as part of a narcotics investigation. Desiree Pitre, 33, of Larose and Joshua Johnson, 29, of LaPlace, were both arrested last Wednesday. Through investigation, narcotics agents obtained a search warrant for Pitre’s residence on 156th Street in Galliano. Agents arrived at Pitre’s residence on January 15, and discovered Pitre was present, along with Johnson and a juvenile. During the search, agents discovered 27 grams of suspected crack cocaine in one piece and an additional 3.6 grams separate from the single piece. They

also discovered a measuring cup and whisk with white powder caked on it which tested positive for cocaine and an additional 7.1 grams of cocaine. Additionally, agents also discovered three jars containing suspected high-grade marijuana, three packages of commercial-grade marijuana, small amounts of marijuana from throughout the residence, and various items associated with the illegal sale of narcotics. Pitre and Johnson were each charged with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Cocaine and Marijuana,

Sex offender faces additional charges stemming from nude photos of teen

A sex offender faces additional charges as part of an investigation stemming back to November of 2019. Roland Bruce Jr., 40, of Cut Off was initially charged with indecent behavior and now faces new charges related to nude photos of the juvenile. Bruce was initially arrested on November 23, 2019. Deputies found Bruce had allegedly sent text messages, which were sexual in nature to a minor teenage girl. Bruce had also requested the girl send nude photos to him, but it was believed at the time that she had not complied. Juvenile detectives continued the investigation and obtained search warrants for the cell phones of both Bruce and the juvenile. Following a forensic analysis of the devices, juvenile detectives found Bruce had sent

m e s sages trying to manipu l a t e t h e t e e n , and she Roland Bruce, Jr. did send nude photos of herself to Bruce. Detectives then obtained warrants for the additional charges. Bruce was previously booked on one count of Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile. On January 16, he was additionally booked with Pornography Involving Juveniles and Computer-Aided Solicitation for Sexual Purposes. Bail is now set at $575,000. Bruce is registered as a Tier III Sex Offender. He was convicted of Forcible Rape and Failure to register as a Sex Offender in 2006 and Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile in 2001.

The LDEQ, Office of Environmental Services, is accepting written comments on a draft Louisiana Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (LPDES) permit prepared for Crosby Linen Service, Inc., 198 Celestine Drive, Golden Meadow, LA 70357. The facility is located at 198 Celestine Drive in Golden Meadow, Lafourche Parish. Upon the effective date of the final permit, the LPDES permit shall replace the previously issued LPDES permit. The principal discharge from this existing source is made into an unnamed ditch, thence into an unnamed canal, thence into an unnamed slough, thence into Bayou Sevin, waters of the state classified for primary contact recreation, secondary contact recreation, and propagation of fish and wildlife. Under the SIC Code 7213, the applicant proposes to discharge treated sanitary wastewater and laundry wastewater from an existing linen service facility. During the preparation of this permit, it has been determined that the discharge will have no adverse impact on the existing uses of the receiving waterbody. As with any discharge, however, some change in existing water quality may occur. So he stepped down as chief of Golden Meadow and came to work for us.” Pitre began working for the Harbor Police last Thursday, Chaisson said. The former chief was the subject of a federal lawsuit in 2018 alleging excessive force. According to court papers, Larose resident Jason Cortez filed a lawsuit on Sept. 26, 2018, in U.S. District Court accusing Pitre of punching him and throwing his wife to the ground by the neck during an incident the year before. Around midnight on Sept. 29, 2017, Cortez and his wife were drinking at TK’s Sports Bar in Golden Meadow, authorities said. When Cortez began “acting drunk,” Pitre, who was also at the bar and was dressed in civilian clothing, escorted him out.

After Pitre escorted Cortez out of the bar, the police chief punched the plaintiff directly in the face, the lawsuit alleges. Cortez’s wife then intervened to “protect her husband from Chief Pitre’s assault.” Pitre claimed Cortez “fell backwards over a monitor, when he fell he struck the chain-linked microphone stand, causing it to strike the lead singer of the band in the head. ... During the night I observed Jason’s level of impairment to be one where he couldn’t stand on his own and his balance was poor.” Court records show the lawsuit was settled on Oct. 15 for an undisclosed amount. There have been seven police chiefs in Golden Meadow, three of whom served more than 10 years, according to the town’s website. He micromanaged and put too much on his plate. He recruited well, but was spread too thin. On the field, the Rebels lacked attention to detail and he failed. They won just 10 times in 35 games and he was fired after 3 years. After his dismissal, Orgeron didn’t quit. He said he worked tirelessly to study his tenure at Ole Miss to determine what went wrong. He coached for the Saints (2008), Tennessee (2009), then went back to USC (2010-2013). At USC, he got a second chance, becoming the team’s interim head coach, turning the team’s season around and showing his growth and maturity. Ed should have gotten the full-time position at USC, but didn’t. That’s a mistake the athletic department in Southern California will never forget making, because he then (after a one-year hiatus) returned to coaching and came to LSU in 2015. After first working under Les Miles, Orgeron got another chance at being a head coach in 2016 when the administration fired Miles and gave Orgeron the interim position mid-season. Like he’d done at USC, Orgeron turned LSU’s season around on the fly and made swift,

but effective changes. Also like he’d done at USC, there was a great chance that he’d be bypassed for the fulltime job with some boosters and athletic officials favoring guys like Tom Herman or Jimbo Fisher for the job instead. But the stars aligned and Orgeron got the LSU job, and there’s been no looking back. There have been bumps in the road. A loss to Troy in 2017 changed the program’s culture. A shutout defeat against Alabama in 2018 was bitter and a 7overtime loss at Texas A&M last fall wasn’t good, either. But all the scars built strength and the 2019 title run the team enjoyed this fall. EMBODIMENT OF THE CAJUN SPIRIT … A SIGN OF OUR FIGHT With the history lesson out of the way, I am writing to tell you all that Orgeron’s story is a microcosm of life in Cajun Louisiana. In our area, we’re often overlooked, often have a long, bumpy road and are often taken for granted. But despite that, we love Louisiana, love our culture and love to help others in their time of need. Our Bayou needed this run from the LSU football team. Our economy is struggling. Oil prices continue to be low. Small businesses are hanging on by a thread and are trying to find some hope that change is coming and better times are on the way. Sure, a football game will not change our economy. To say that would be irresponsible, but Orgeron and LSU’s triumphs should be a source of inspiration and a constant reminder that NO MATTER HOW MANY bad days there are, there’s always a chance of bright light on the other side. Just as long as you put in the work and keep the faith, all things are possible and every problem has a solution. Our Cajun people are strong. We’re battle tested. We’re scarred.

We will get out of these economic problems and come out to the other side. I have absolutely no doubt in my soul that the future of our community is bright. It’s why I choose to live and plant roots here — despite opportunities in other areas. But with all that said, it still feels good to win one and to see a fairy tale come true. Coach O, we’re so proud of you, and we’re thankful to you for the hope you’ve instilled in our community. To our business leaders, citizens and youth — let’s now ride that wave of momentum and push it ever farther. We have it in us to do anything we want to do. That’s how we’ve survived this long, and it’s how we’ll thrive into the future. We’re a special people — the type that can get up off the mat, wipe the blood off our brow and keep swinging. The type that can be stripped of everything, keep working and become a champion — the best in the country, a national champion!

Human Resources Director Savonye Townsend and Finance Director Renita Jackson served in the same roles during the Charlotte Randolph administration, when Chaisson was parish administrator. Jackson has also worked in the parish’s finance department for 17 years while Townsend has served several other public entities like school districts. Lorraine said he remembered both appointees from the Randolph administration, stating they both did a great job. Of Jackson, council chairman Armand Autin said, “She’s very, very effective and efficient. I’m happy to see her back.” Chaisson kept Planning Director Tony Breaux, who served for all four years under former parish president Jimmy Cantrelle. Lorraine said, “In the last four years, Tony

turned the permitting process around.” Parish Administrator Mitch Orgeron and Public Works Director Dillon Baronne come with backgrounds in the private sector. Orgeron has worked for liftboat provider Offshore Marine Contractors for eight years and owns Lockport-based consulting firm Waypoint Advisors. Baronne has worked for Larose construction company Picciola and Associates and the Thibodauxbased Acadia Land Surveying. Autin said the public works director was one of the parish’s most difficult positions after the presidency, given the area’s issues with flooding and drainage. Multiple councilmen agreed that former public works director James Barnes had done an excellent job balancing the roles responsibilities and addressing the public’s concerns. C o u n c i l m a n Michael Gros advised Baronne to use Barnes as a resource. Chaisson said he made his selections not based on friendships but skill. After the council’s

Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for the equality of all human beings

On January 20 we celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, the third Monday of January around the day of his birth, January 15, 1929. He was born Michael King, Jr. When he was five, Michael and his father traveled to Germany in 1934. The theology and activism of the Protestant Reformation leader, Martin Luther, inspired Michael, Sr. to change his name and his son’s. Although he was the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, he was considering becoming a doctor or a lawyer instead. He later decided that the Bible had “many profound truths which one cannot escape.” He decided to enter the Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, graduating with his PhD at the age of 25. During his first year at the seminary, King got a C in public speaking. However, by his final year, he was receiving straight A’s and had become the valedictorian of his class. We can learn from him that we should never give in to discouragement. With God’s help, anything is possible. King was a social activist and a spokesperson for the nonviolent civil rights movement. He rose to prominence during a bus boycott by African Americans in Montgomery. He is known to have played a key role in the civil rights movement. They jailed him 29 times, often on such trumped-up charges as driving 30 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone in Alabama in 1956. When he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, King was the youngest person to do so, at age 35. (Malala Yousafzai now holds the record, winning the 2014 prize at age 17.) He turned over the prize money of $54,123 to support the civil rights movement. On August 28, 1963, King directed a march in Washington, D.C., where he gave his famous, “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. His dream was that the inhabitants of the United States would be judged by their personal qualities and not by the color of their skin: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, ‘We hold these truths to be selfevident: that all men are created equal.’” On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated by a racist while speaking in Tennessee in support of the struggling garbage workers of that city. It had been only four years earlier that he had received the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent campaign against racism. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a

bill that named the third Monday in January as the holiday observance “Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday.” It took 17 years for all 50 states to recognize this holiday. Americans are often encouraged to observe this day not simply as a day off from work, but also as a “Day of Service” to others through appropriate civic, community, and service projects. It’s an opportunity to give to others in any way we can – whether it’s a community project or simply

being kind to others in our community. The following are some of Martin Luther King’s famous quotations: “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.” (Stride Toward Freedom, 1958); “Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not

rivals.” (A sermon on August 30, 1959); “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” (Strength to Love, 1963); “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.” (From the Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963).
