New superintendent details plans moving forward By Halle Parker Daily Comet Staff Writer

LSU “locks in” Coach O for six more years

BATON ROUGE, La (AP) — LSU coach Ed Orgeron has agreed to a new contract extension worth more than $7 million annually and which runs through the 2026 season, the university announced on Friday. The new six-year agreement comes on the heels of the Tigers’ 15-0 national championship season that concluded earlier this month with a 42-25 victory over Clemson in the national title game in New Orleans. Contract language, which remains subject to approval by the board of supervisors, calls for a base salary of $6 million plus various performance-related bonuses. “Coach O has set a new standard at LSU,” athletic director Scott Woodward said. “He has proven that he is not only a championship coach, but also a leader of a program committed to doing things the right way. He has represented our institution and our state with great pride, on and off the field of play.” Woodward added that the new contract “should make clear our commitment to Coach O and the direction of our football program.” The 58-year-old Orgeron was the consensus 2019 national coach of the year. Since he started as a 7th grade history teacher in 2000, Jarod Martin expected each of his jobs to be his last, loving each step of his career path so far. “I could’ve retired as the principal at Lockport Middle and been happy or the principal at Central Lafourche High and been happy,” he said. “I was very fortunate to be given opportunities to progress.” Last Tuesday, the Lafourche Jarod Martin Lafourche School Superintendent Parish School Board gave him a Daily Comet new opportunity, the chance to continue serving as the district’s superintendent. For the past six months, Martin has served as the interim superintendent when the former head Louis Voiron went on an extended medical leave in July. He is still the interim superintendent until his contract is negotiated and voted on by the school board. In an interview Friday, Martin said he was “still over-

whelmed and thankful.” “I had zero inkling that it was going to go where it did considering the quality of the candidates,” he said. It wasn’t until Voiron told the board he wouldn’t be returning in the fall that Martin started discussing with his wife whether he should apply for the position full-time. Martin said it wasn’t his goal to one day occupy a superintendent’s seat when he was teaching history at Houma Junior High. Now that he has it, Martin plans to stay as long as possible, retaining stability in the district. “I have a strong desire to be here for many, many years,” he said. “As long as the board will have me.” In Terrebonne Parish, Martin’s father, Philip Martin, is entering his 11th year as superintendent, a tenure his son hopes to emulate. Both Martins said they typically avoid talking about work when they spend time together. Jarod Martin said his father has played a larger role in helping him grow as a person than professionally. In his career, he’s received advice from former school district officials like JoAnn Matthews, who served as Lafourche superintendent for 13 years, and Bubba Orgeron, who is the assistant superintendent in Terrebonne. Louisiana secretary of state wants pay bump for election workers By David Jacobs | The Center Square

Locals turn out in droves to celebrate Mr. Ronnie’s opening Mr. Ronnie’s Donuts owner Bud Picou.

By Casey Gisclair | Gazette Staff

Locals with a sweet tooth got their fix throughout the weekend, as a well-known, highly popular bakery finally opened its doors. Mr. Ronnie’s Galliano location served its first customers at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, and, as expected, the business had a line waiting outside of its doors to greet them as they opened up shop. Literally thousands of donuts and pastries were served on the first day. Throughout most of the day, traffic at the business was so thick that the line at the drive-thru window was backed up onto the shoulder of La. Highway 3235. Locals served said even with the traffic, the business didn’t disappoint, producing hot, fresh dessert offerings that pleased the pallet. “They keep you going back for more or maybe, I just have a serious problem because I went three times

today,” said Amber Martinez with a laugh. “My opening day experience was nonetheless great, the employees were very cheerful when their doors opened at 5 a.m. and they were getting people in and out in a very timely manner considering the crowd they drew.” Martinez said she was one of the group waiting at Mr. Ronnie’s doors as doors were opening. The business posted a video on social media showing their first seconds in business and the crowd awaiting them. The group cheered as doors were opened and the line flowed steadily throughout the day. The first order was basic and predictable — a box of donuts. Throughout the day, hundreds of those boxes moved, as locals ordered some of the business’s treats. Christy Walker said she waited an hour in the drive-thru line. See Donuts Page 3-A

Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin plans to ask legislators for pay raises for staff and temporary poll workers, who he said are dealing with an increasing workload as early voting grows more popular. Ardoin, whose office runs the state’s elections, did not mention how much the changes might cost. Any legislation that could affect state finances would require the legislature’s fiscal office to estimate the impact. “The timing is probably the best it’s been in quite some time to try to address this issue, especially dealing with the shortage [of commissioners] that we’re facing,” Ardoin said at this week’s meeting of the State Board of Election Supervisors. According to Brian Champagne, registrar of voters for St. James Parish, temporary early voting commissioners in 2007 were paid the same $200 per day as those that worked on election day. But pay for early voting commissioners was slashed to $100. See Pay Bump Page 3-A

Letters and Opinions

With much gratitude

On the morning of January 8, 2020, at about 1:20 a.m., our mom who suffers from Alzheimer’s left her home in only her nightgown and socks. My family and I began searching the neighborhood and soon realized we would need help. My brother called 911, and his call was transferred to the sheriff’s office. Within a few minutes, police officers arrived at our house. As we continued to search the area, more and more emergency responders arrived to help. My family and I would like to thank all Lafourche Parish Sheriff officers, firemen, ambulance workers, harbor police, Golden Meadow policemen, and Louisiana State Police who helped search for our mom. We appreciated those neighbors who allowed the police to view camera footage, which gave us the direction in which she walked. Thanks, thanks, thanks to our neighbors, friends, and family who joined in on the search. We appreciate all the prayers that were sent our way. It was the longest hours of our life not knowing where our mom was and if she was all right. We were very concerned about her well

being because we could feel the temperature drop ad we were searching for her. At around 7:00 a.m., our prayers were answered. We got word that she was located about four tenths of a mile from her house. We would also like to thank the ambulance workers, Lady of the Sea emergency room doctors, nurses, and staff, and second floor nurses and staff who helped care for our mom. “My dad’s influence to me is how to be a good husband and a good father, said Jarod Martin, though he still plans to go to him for advice occasionally. Philip Martin, who couldn’t make it Tuesday due to his own superintendent duties, said he is proud of his son and doesn’t expect to have to provide too much guidance. “He’s his own man, and he’s always made good decisions so I fully anticipate he will continue to do the same, said Philip Martin. “As any father would feel, I am very happy for him. In his first 30 days, Jarod Martin aims to gather business representatives and other community stakeholders together in a superintendent advisory group — an idea he proposed during his superintendent interview. Martin said the district would have the chance to present its challenges, strengths and goals to the group to encourage transparency and build a stronger connection between the community and the school system. “What’s driving it immediately ... is that we’re trying to develop support for the initiative that the board has in passing a half-cent sales tax, he said. With the May 9 election on the horizon, Martin said he recognized the need to act quickly. “Right now, we’re on Day 3, he said. “Twentyseven days left to nail down participants and get a meeting set. After the election, the group wouldn’t simply dissolve. From there, Martin said it will continue to aid the school board in developing policies. “Taking into account the needs of the business community and the community at large, and all of our employees, he said.

Aside from the advisory council, the future superintendent also plans to conduct as many public meetings as possible to engage with residents about the half-cent sales tax over the next 100 days. “We’re going to do our best to do as many public meetings and get as many forms of communication out to the community, increase the salaries of our employees to stay regionally competitive, and educate as many folks to the current situation as we can,â€? he said. Within a similar time frame, he also aims to work with the central staff and school board to identify its priorities in the district’s five-year strategic plan and create a plan of action. “I believe in 90 days,â€? he said, “we’ll be able to articulate what our priority projects are.â€? â€” Daily Comet Staff Writer Halle Parker can be reached at hparker@ houmatoday.com or 857-2204.

Donuts From 1-A

“Ah, the things we do for our kids,â€? she said. “And donuts!â€? When it was her turn, she ordered one dozen chocolate donuts with sprinkles, an apple turnover, a maple bacon eclair and some milk. “We were greeted with big smiles when we finally made it to the window to order,â€? she said. “Our tummies were very happy with our order.â€? While the drive-thru lines clogged, other locals found better luck going inside. Both Mark Simoneaux and Ryan Pitre said they bypassed the drive-thru line by parking and going into the store. Simoneaux said he was in the drive-thru line for 10 minutes before he told his wife to park while he ordered in the store. He ordered a dozen Bavarian cream-filled donut holes, a cinnamon roll and a mixed box of a dozen donuts. â€œInside took about 6 minutes,â€? Simoneaux said. “I had 5 people in line in front of me. It took me another 5 minutes to be able to back my truck out and leave. Fresh, hot donuts, ridiculous good.â€? Pitre’s story was similar. He said he saw the line at drive-thru, so tested his luck inside. He ordered 9 regular glazed donuts, 3 red velvet donuts, and three burgers with fries. Pitre said he was in and out in under 10 minutes and it would have been even less — if not for ordering the burgers. “Considering that everyone from Leeville to Raceland came get donuts today, I was very happy with the experience,â€? he said. But perhaps no one did it quite as big as

Martinez. She was there at 5 a.m. for the opening, waiting 38 minutes in the drive-thru line for some tasty treats. She then went back at 5 p.m. and said the drive-thru wait was about the same as it was for the 5 a.m. opening. Then, she went back at 7 p.m. By then, she said the selection offerings were limited because the business had run out of a few things. But the line was as long as ever — more than an hour in total. On Sunday, the business said it had stocked back up on all of the things that had sold out. Lines on Sunday were still long in waves, but business wasn’t quite as plentiful as Saturday.Â

would allow elections officials to verify the validity of early voting ballots on the Friday before a Saturday election day. The actual votes still would not be counted until election day. Ardoin said candidates and the general public often expect to see early voting totals right after the polls close at 8 p.m. Feeling pressured to rush through the process can lead to mistakes, he said; the change would allow workers to get some of the work done ahead of time. “We want to be accurate, he said. “We don’t want to be Speedy Gonzales, because speed can create problems.

3-A

The board endorsed more than 30 changes to the state’s election code, most of which are minor tweaks and will be handled in a single omnibus bill. One proposal expected to be in a standalone bill would allow clerks of court to summon law enforcement officers on election day “to preserve order, enforce the election laws or protect election officials from interference with the performance of their duties. Commissioners already have this authority. Under current law, law enforcement officers are not to enter polling places on election day except to vote or assist the commissioners.

Pay Bump From 1-A

As more people vote early, the commissioners, many of whom are elderly, are working longer hours. Officials hope bumping pay to $150 would attract more early voting commissioners. Â The board endorsed the concept, which Ardoin said he will take up with lawmakers. He also is asking for more money in his budget for overtime pay for his staff during early voting and election day. Ardoin also plans to call for legislation that

Orgeron From 1-A

He has led LSU to a 40-9 mark since initially taking over on an interim basis in 2016. Of his 40 wins at LSU, 12 have come against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the match-up, including seven in 2019, which stands at the most in college football history for a single season. His 40 wins through the first 49 games of his career ties for the most by any coach in LSU history. Orgeron grew up in Larose, about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans, and passionately followed LSU football as a child. “I’m happy to represent LSU and this great state,” Orgeron said. “My family and I are very grateful, and I look forward to working as hard as possible to continue to win championships at LSU.” Orgeron was an LSU assistant and recruiting coordinator when he took over as interim coach after Les Miles was fired four games into the 2016 season. He was retained on a permanent basis before LSU’s bowl game that season. His promotion represented a lifelong dream for Louisiana na-

tive who won a state title as a player at South Lafourche High School and received a scholarship to play for LSU, only to drop out of school briefly before resuming his college playing career at Northwestern State. Following that, he embarked on a long, winding coaching career that included stops as an assistant at Syracuse, Miami, Tennessee and USC, as well as an unsuccessful stint as head coach at Mississippi. He also briefly serves as a defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints. This past season, he oversaw the greatest season in the 126-year history of LSU football, spearheaded by a nation-leading offense that broke a slew school records. Joe Burrow became just the second Heisman Trophy winner in LSU, and the school’s first quarterback to receive college football most prestigious individual award. ____ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/Collegefootball and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25

great-grandchildren. I am a lifelong resident of South Lafourche. My late father “Ted” Gisclair was elected as one of the original members of the first ever elected port commissioners in the state of Louisiana. My interest in the port began back then and has continued since. In my short tenure as port commissioner, I recanted the visions of the original members and compare the port to what it has become today. My interest is in the FUTURE of the port and airport to continue being the economic engine for Lafourche Parish and our state. The continued development of the port and airport, particularly the development of the new LNG facilities and the nature conservatory project, will not only guaranty the continued employment opportunities of the port but also provide diversity to our economy by bringing in new revenue sources and additional tourist and recreational activities. These projects will expose more people to the importance of the port to our nation’s oil supply, the value of protecting our coast, and the completion of the LA 1 corridor. My current employment keeps me in touch with the transportation needs of Port Fourchon, on land, air and water. The port also provides services to the fishing and recreational industry. For nearly 40 years my family and I were directly involved with the shrimping industry as owners of Gulf Shrimp Processors and MidGulf Ice Company. Over the years I have served on many governmental boards including the parish recreation board and the Lake Fields Fish and Game Commission. In the upcoming weeks, I look forward to meeting as many people as possible to discuss my ideas about continuing the forward progress of Port Fourchon.

Huey Long-era time capsule extracted at Louisiana Capitol

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A decades-old time capsule buried in the walls of the Louisiana Capitol building by former Gov. Huey Long has been uncovered. The state Senate said Long and architect Leon Weiss concealed a copper box behind the cornerstone in the northwest corner of the Capitol building in 1931. The box was found during research for rehabilitation of the nearly 90-year-old historic landmark. The building’s current architects said planned construction would make accessing the capsule in the future impossible, so Senate officials decided to extract the time capsule. But the box will remain sealed for now — until it is analyzed and a plan is decided for where and how to display the time capsule and its contents, according to the Senate. ___

in a new location Saturday. It originally opened in 1907. Floods and looting after the hurricane contributed to its closure, The TimesPicayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported. The new facility is open to the public and boasts a bar, cafe, outdoor space, museum and games. The brewery will also offer tours showing parts of the production process, according to news outlets. The brewery has created jobs for more than 40 people, WVUETV reported. The general manager said he hopes the facility becomes a landmark for people visiting New Orleans. “I mean, if you go to Café Du Monde for a beignet, you have to come to Dixie for a beer,” Jim Birch said. ___

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Christian marriages should be grounded in Jesus’ teachings of love

Maybe the primary root cause for Christian marriages failing today is that couples have chosen the secular ideals of marriage instead of being grounding in biblical teachings on marriage and family life. Only a return to God centered teachings can remedy our current crisis surrounding marriage and the family. The most important biblical principle is Christ’s love. When was the last time you told a family member, either in a letter, e-mail, or in person, that you loved him or her? Failure to express our love, verbally or visibly, especially to young people, can have disastrous effects. Young people need to know that they are loved. They need to see it and they need to feel it. According to a study of more than 500 family counselors, the following are the top traits of successful families: • Communicating and listening • Affirming and supporting family members • Respecting one another • Developing a sense of trust

• Sharing time and responsibility • Knowing right from wrong • Sharing a religious core • Respecting privacy. Good, strong families do not just happen. It takes a great deal of hard work to build, nurture, and help our families grow in love, freedom, respect, and kindness. In the end, nothing is guaranteed. We cannot control how children are going to turn out. However, that does not mean we should not put our whole heart and soul into making our families the best they can be. An essential ingredient of any successful family has to be an awareness of what is going on in the family. Awareness means paying attention to our other family members, listening to their stories, taking an interest in what is important to them. If we are always busy with our own activities, we are probably missing much of what is going on with our other family members. Sometime ago Ann Landers received a letter from a mother asking her at what age a father and son should stop kissing and saying “I love you” to each other. Ann Landers gave the mother a one-word answer: “Never.” Shortly afterward Ann Landers received another letter from a father. He said her response to the mother’s letter moved him to

tears. He explained why: “A few weeks ago I kissed my son for the first time and told him I loved him. Unfortunately, he did not know it because he was dead. He had shot himself.” The father continued: “The greatest regret of my life is that I kept my son at arms’ length. I believed it was unmanly for males to show affection for one another. I will never recover from my ignorance and stupidity.” It is hard to believe that Jesus, who cried at the tomb of his friend Lazarus, never embraced his mother and said, “Mom, I love you.” It is hard to believe that Jesus, who told how the father kissed his returning prodigal son, never hugged Joseph and said, “Dad, I love you.” Family life is not just the responsibility of the parents. As children grow and become more aware of the needs of

their family, they too should learn to take part in helping in whatever small or large ways they are capable. That’s how we learn the meaning of responsibility and respect. Today we have all types of families – dual income, blended, single parent and empty nest families. In the family of God, there are much diversity and each person in these families are of inestimable worth. It’s important to develop new models and find a new language for caring. It takes hard work to build, nurture, and help your family to grow. Yet, as a member of a family, it is our calling. God calls us to holiness precisely as a family. It is often in the working out of the various things that happen to us as a family that we find holiness. Is God the center of your family?
