Cantrelle, Randolph headed to runoff
A bright spot …

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — All seven of Louisiana’s statewide elected positions were on Saturday’s ballot, with wide open competitions for governor and lieutenant governor because the incumbents weren’t running for re-election. Runoffs, as needed, will be Nov. 21. LOUISIANA GOVERNOR Democratic state Rep. John Bel Edwards and Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter advanced to the runoff in the governor’s race, the top two vote-getters among nine candidates on the ballot. Only four mounted large-scale campaigns with multimillion-dollar fundraising and advertising: Edwards, Vitter, Republican Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle and Republican Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne. Angelle and Dardenne split the anti-Vitter vote among Republicans, paving the way for Vitter to reach the runoff. See Governor Page 3-A

Runoff set for Nov. 21 Staff reports
ABOVE: Just when you thought Monday couldn’t get any gloomier, out pops a rainbow! Mike Coleman snapped this shot from Port Fourchon amid all the rain Monday afternoon. Perhaps a reminder that even though things seem tough sometimes, there’s always a ray of hope and sunshine after the storm. LEFT: High tides also overtook Hwy. 1 in Leeville closing the roadway for awhile Monday. Perhaps another sign of just how important the new elevated highway is to this area.
Gun seized from student was an airsoft pistol
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre, Golden Meadow Chief of Police Reggie Pitre, and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Matthews announced the gun seized from a Golden Meadow student’s backpack Friday morning was an airsoft pistol. Through investigation, detectives learned the nine-year-old male student discovered the pistol in his book bag while riding on the school bus Friday morning. He reportedly became scared and nervous believing the pistol was a real firearm. When he arrived at Golden Meadow Upper Elementary School, he immediately notified a teacher about the pistol. The bag was then turned over to School Resource Officers. Due to
the realistic appearance of the pistol, it was not revealed to be an airsoft gun until deputies handled the weapon to secure it. Investigators learned the student did not have knowledge of the pistol being in his bag. Regardless, he cannot be charged under Louisiana State law due to being under the age of 10. Investigators say they are continuing their investigation into how the pistol ended up in the backpack. See Gun Page 3-A
Gumbo Event makes Larose ‘home’
Voters went to the polls Saturday in Louisiana to cast ballots on a number of state and local election contests. In Lafourche Parish, Raceland businessman Jimmy Cantrelle held a lead Jimmy Cantrelle over incumbent Charlotte Randolph in the race for Parish President. With all ballots counted, Cantrelle polled 7,413 votes or 33 percent to Randolph’s 7,270 votes or 32 percent. Charlotte A runoff between Randolph Cantrelle and Randolph is familiar territory for the two candidates and Lafourche voters. They entered a runoff in 2011, when Randolph received 51 percent of the votes to defeat Cantrelle. Randolph now has a shot at an unprecedented fourth consecutive term in office. Parish Councilmen Joe Fertitta and Aaron Caillouet, both of Thibodaux, trailed with 4,230 votes for 19 percent and 3,308 votes for 15 percent, respectively. About 39 percent of the 56,854 voters in the parish cast ballots. In the Clerk of Court race to succeed retiring clerk Vernon Rodrigue, Thibodaux attorney Annette Fontana was elected to a first ballot win with just over 50 percent of the votes cast. Fontana received 11,187 votes for 50.5 percent while deputy clerk Vernell “Nell” Autin polled 6,775 votes for 31 percent. Thibodaux businessman Kim Breaux trailed with 4,189 votes for 19 percent. Fontana will take office after Rodrigue, the incumbent of 23 years, retires June 30. See Runoff Page 3-A

There is something to be said about the feelings, experiences and life that comes along with living in a small town. Whether it’s the comfort of knowing each other or the support they have for one another, calling these small communities ‘home’ brings about a sense of belonging. These are exactly the reasons the World Record Gumbo Event chose to make Larose ‘home’. The moment the coordinators of the World Record Gumbo Event stepped foot into Lafourche Parish, the community was a willing partner in more ways than one. It’s almost as if everyone understands now is the time the community needs to come together with so many unsure of what tomorrow may bring. “I was told ‘if you are not from the area, people may treat you differently,’” said Cynthia Caronna, Executive Director of the World Record Gumbo Event. “It was
different, beautifully different. The warmth and generosity afforded our event has been heartwarming.” In the beginning stages of planning the WRG event, there had to be a location that could handle an event of this size. In walked Jasmine Ayo and the Larose Civic Center. See Home Page 7-A

Runoff
From 1-A
In a hotly contested race for Louisiana State Senate, District 20, incumbent Norby Chabert fended off a determined and wellfunded challenge from Houma businessman Mike Fesi to capture a first primary victory. Chabert polled 5,087 votes or 50.3 percent of votes cast to Fesi’s 4,248 votes for 42 percent. A third candidate, Mark Atzenhoffer, trailed with 774 votes for 8 percent of the vote. In the races for Lafourche Parish councilmen seats, one incumbent was unseated and three veteran members will move to a runoff election. In District 1, Alfred “Al” Carter and Jerry Jones, who has served five terms on the council, will move to a runoff. Luci Sposito won in District 2, unseating Michael Delatte, a threeterm veteran on the council. In District 3, Michael Gros will replace Aaron Caillouet, who left to run for Lafourche Parish President. In District 6, incumbent Lindel Toups received with 1,118 votes (47 percent) and will move to a runoff with Corey Perrillioux who received 742 votes (31 percent). Renell Compeaux received 541 votes (23 percent). District 6 voter turnout was 37 percent. In District 7, Armand
“Noonie” Autin won with 1,610 votes (70 percent), defeating Ron Sapia, who received 698 votes (30 percent). Voter turnout was 39 percent in the 7th District. Autin will replace Phillip Gouaux, who will retire. In District 8, incumbent Jerry Lafont received 1,054 votes (46 percent) and will move to a runoff with Gary Champagne who received 710 votes (31 percent). Darryl Marlbrough received 522 votes (23 percent). District 8 voter turnout was 39 percent. Incumbent Daniel Lorraine, who received 1,300 votes (about 57 percent), retained his seat for District 9. Challenger Will Lasseigne received 989 votes (43 percent). Voter turnout was 39 percent. Board members will be sworn in for their new fouryear terms in January. In addition, the two library millage renewals on the ballot parishwide were both passed for new tenyear terms. Proposition one for 1.65 mills passed with just over 50 percent of the votes cast while proposition two, for a renewal of 4.06 mills passed with just over 51 percent of the votes cast. All run off elections will be held Saturday, Nov. 21.

“I cannot imagine the fear a nine-year-old would experience after finding a pistol in a school bag,” said
Sheriff Webre. “I commend this young man for overcoming his fear and doing the right thing. I also commend the actions of all those involved. While there was never any true danger, the situation was handled with the proper attention and respect.”
Governor From 1-A
More than $13.5 million has been spent by the candidates alone. Outside groups have poured in millions more, the first time super PACs have played much of a role in the race. Gov. Bobby Jindal is term-limited after eight years in office. LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR Republican Billy Nungesser and Democrat Kip Holden will face off in the runoff election for lieutenant governor. Holden, the mayor of Baton Rouge, easily advanced with a base of Democratic Party support. Nungesser, former president of Plaquemines Parish, slugged it out in a high-spending primary competition against fellow Republican John Young, president of Jefferson Parish. Young came in third. Also on the ballot was Republican state Sen. Elbert Guillory of Opelousas. The job was wide open because its current occupant, Jay Dardenne, ran for governor instead. The lieutenant governor leads Louisiana’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and serves as the figurehead for the state’s $11 billion tourism industry. ATTORNEY GENERAL Republican incumbent Attorney General Buddy Caldwell will be fighting in the November runoff to hang onto his seat amid strong competition from former Congressman Jeff Landry, who received the endorsement of the state Republican Party.
Others in the race who didn’t reach the runoff were Port Allen lawyer Marty Maley, a Republican, and Democrats Geri Broussard Baloney of Garyville and Ike Jackson of Plaquemine. Baloney received the backing of the state Democratic Party. OTHER STATEWIDE RACES Louisiana’s four other GOP statewide incumbents were re-elected: Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Treasurer John Kennedy, Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon and Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain. Each drew challengers, though few were well-funded. The secretary of state is Louisiana’s chief elections official. Schedler bested a Democratic challenger, Baton Rouge law professor Chris Tyson, to hang onto the job. Kennedy defeated one opponent, Republican lawyer Jennifer Treadway. The incumbent agriculture and insurance commissioners won in the primary though they faced three opponents each. Donelon defeated Donald Hodge Jr., a Democrat and lawyer from Baton Rouge who ran unsuccessfully against Donelon four years ago; Charlotte McDaniel McGehee, a Democrat and lawyer from Prairieville; and Matt Parker, a Republican from Calhoun who owns a car

repair business. Strain easily won a new term, amid opposition from Charlie Greer, a Democrat and retired agriculture department employee from Natchitoches; Adrian “Ace” Juttner, a Green Party candidate from Abita Springs; and Jamie LaBranche, a Republican from LaPlace who ran unsuccessfully against Strain four years ago as a Democrat. STATE EDUCATION BOARD Voters were choosing the eight elected members of the 11-member Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, the state’s top school board. It sets policy for more than 700,000 public school students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Five incumbents ran for re-election, and two were defeated. Lottie Beebe, the incumbent for BESE District 3 was soundly defeated by challenger Sandy LeBlanc Holloway. Holloway received 61 percent of the vote to Beebe’s 39 percent. The makeup of the board will help decide whether Superintendent of Education John White keeps his job for the new term and how much Louisiana reworks its use of the Common Core education standards. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS There were four pro-
3-A
posals to change the Louisiana Constitution. Amendment 1 was rejected. It would have steered some oil and gas money that otherwise flows into Louisiana’s “rainy day” fund, known as the Budget Stabilization Fund, into a transportation account to spend on road and bridge work. The trust fund would have broken into two parts: one that continues to work as a rainy day fund and the other that allows spending on transportation projects. Currently, the cap on the fund is about $800 million. This would have boosted the cap to $1 billion, split evenly between the two subaccounts. Amendment 2 was approved. It will pour more money into transportation projects, allowing the state treasurer to invest public dollars into an “infrastructure bank” that works as a revolving loan program for local governments to borrow money for the projects at low interest rates. Amendment 3 was rejected. It would have widened the definition of what can be considered in fiscal legislative sessions held every two years to deal with mainly budget and tax issues. Amendment 4 was approved. It will require that state or local governments from outside Louisiana pay taxes on property they own in the state.

people from black nightclubs like Hosea Hill’s “Sugar Bowl” in Thibodaux where all the cool early Rhythm and Blues bands played. Those laws were later over turned by the Supreme Court, and rightly so, but at the time the law was the law and KTIB manager Hal Benson and I wanted to hear those bands. Hosea Hill was a friend of ours so we had a meeting and devised a plan which Hosea said “broke no law, just bent them a little.” The Sugar Bowl nightclub had a big rectangular opening in the wall between the kitchen and the dance floor for food and bar service but it also framed a great view of the bandstand. Hosea’s plan was to stack beer cases next to it, technically hiding and segregating us, set up a table and chairs and arrange holes in the stacks big enough to see and hear the bands. Hal and I enjoyed his hospitably as we sipped our quart bottles of beer and watched some of the legendary acts of the Rhythm and Blues era. We were in the presence of greatness, Big Joe Turner, Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, Eddie “Guitar Slim” Jones, Ike and Tina Turner, Frogman Henry, (who later recorded some of my songs), and a young Allan Toussaint, who I had the pleasure many years later to accommodate to Washington, D.C. on music business. We were thrilled to be able to talk to them in the kitchen. Once the young and future great Ray Charles shook my hand and jokingly said “Leroy, its good to ‘see’ you.” Unforgettable! Eddie “Guitar Slim” Jones was Mr. Hill’s star attraction. Eddie was born in Greenwood, Mississippi on December 10, 1926 and spent his youth in the local clubs singing and dancing. He was so talented he was nicknamed “Limber Legs”. After returning from

World War II military service he came to New Orleans where T -Bone Walker introduced him to the guitar. About that time he met Thibodaux nightclub owner Hosea Hill who became his manager. Mr. Hill convinced a young Ray Charles, who played at his club, to produce a record for his new singer. He did and a recording session was arranged with Specialty Records in 1951. “The Things I Used To Do” sold over one million records and became a blues standard and made “Guitar Slim” a national star. Hosea continued to book and promote him but after a few years he lost tract of him and his career faded. He became an alcoholic and died of pneumonia in New York in 1959

broke and penniless. Hosea was called and had Eddie transported to Thibodaux where he is buried next to him. One gimmick Eddie had was a 350 ft. electric chord between his guitar and the amplifier and he
danced out into the street where he stopped traffic. He also dyed his hair the color of his outfit and his last performances were with Muddy Waters in California. We saw his act several times and sometimes fellow announcer Jim Michie and young musician Sydney George would sneak in with us. Were we breaking the law? That law was later overturned and declared illegal by the Supreme Court so therefore you cannot break an illegal law. Makes sense to me. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. BYE NOW!

Agents discover meth, marijuana and pills during NEWS IN BRIEF traffic stop in Mathews 6-A
Wednesday, October 28, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle heading northbound on LA Hwy. 308 in Mathews last Thursday. They identified the driver as Ashley Danos, 30, of Cut Off. Danos was immediately taken into custody due to having three outstanding warrants. With the assistance of a K-9 deputy, agents searched her vehicle and discovered suspected narcotics including approximately 15.6 grams of methamphetamine, 31.6 grams of marijuana, 22 amphetamine pills, 22 alprazolam pills, and six (6) hydrocodone pills in two (2) different dosage amounts. They also discovered various drug paraphernalia and $700 in cash. A presumptive field test on the suspected methamphetamine yielded a positive result. Danos was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where she was booked with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, marijuana, amphetamine, hydrocodone (2

She was also booked on six active warrants for contempt of court, a probation/parole violation warrant, and as a fugitive of Terrebonne Parish where she is wanted for other drug charges. Her bond was set at $128,000 for the charges in Lafourche Parish, but she is being held for Terrebonne Parish and Louisiana Probation and Parole. She has also been ordered to pay fines and costs in the amount of $1,650 related to one of the contempt charges.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Residents of New Orleans’ French Quarter have overwhelmingly approved a new five-year sales tax to keep more than 30 state troopers patrolling their historic district. Complete but unofficial returns show that nearly 1,000 people voted, and 78 percent of them voted for the tax. It will add about a quarter of a penny to each dollar spent at stores in the neighborhood. Supporters say tourists will pay most of the $2 million a year the tax is expected to bring in. It raises the overall sales tax rate in the French Quarter to 9.25 percent for retail and nearly 10 percent for restaurants. Extra troopers have patrolled the neighborhood since the summer of 2014, when a woman was killed and nine other people wounded in a gunfight on Bourbon Street. _____________

runoff election for governor. Vitter’s campaign announced Monday that he notified the state police that he won’t accept the trooper bodyguards. His opponent, Democrat John Bel Edwards, is using the state police security. The bodyguards were with Edwards at a Sunday press conference. In a letter, Vitter suggested deploying the security detail planned for him to highly-traveled areas of Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge or on the Atchafalaya Basin to respond quickly to traffic accidents. Or, he suggested adding them to the state police patrol in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Vitter says he’ll cut the size of the governor’s protective services detail if elected. The runoff election is Nov. 21. _____________

US rig count steady this week at 787
HOUSTON (AP) — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. this week remained unchanged at 787. Houston’s Baker Hughes said Friday that 594 rigs were seeking oil and 193 explored for natural gas. A year ago, with oil prices about double the prices now, 1,595 rigs were active. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Louisiana gained five rigs, Ohio was up two and Alaska and Oklahoma each rose by one. Texas declined by five rigs and Kansas and Pennsylvania were down by two each. New Mexico and West Virginia dropped one apiece. Arkansas, California, Colorado, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming were unchanged. The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999. _____________
Dog named Trigger shoots owner during Indiana waterfowl hunt
NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a northern Indiana woman is recovering after being shot in the foot by her dog. And the dog’s name? Trigger. Indiana Conservation Officer Jonathon Boyd says 25-year-old Allie Carter of Avilla laid her 12-gauge shotgun on the ground without the safety on during a waterfowl hunt Saturday at Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area. Boyd says Carter’s chocolate Labrador retriever, Trigger, stepped on top of the shotgun and depressed the trigger. He says Carter was shot in the left foot at pointblank range, suffering injuries to her foot and toes. She was treated at two hospitals and released. Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area is about 140 miles north of Indianapolis. _____________

Tarpons roll Ellender to set up homecoming showdown with Assumption Gazette Sports Reports
The South Lafourche football team finally bucked its trend. After a season filled with slow starts, but strong finishes, the Tarpons finally played a four-quarter game. South Lafourche dominated Ellender on Thursday night, using a strong start to jump ahead early against the home-standing Patriots. With the lead intact, the Tarpons never looked back, securing a blowout 48-14 win. The win is the thirdstraight for South
Lafourche and the team’s fourth in its past five games. Tarpons coach Dennis Skains said it’s a sign of how well his team has progressed throughout the season. “It wasn’t perfect, but I think we played really well,” Skains said after the win. “We made some mistakes here and there, but we were really pleased with how we played considering that we had a short week. We started fast, which was a point of emphasis for us.

All-in-all, we did a good job.” The game was practically over before halftime. Ellender got the football first and punted after a three-and-out drive. The Tarpons quickly drove all of the way down the field on five plays, a drive capped on a long touchdown pass from quarterback Jaydon Cheramie to Luke Guidry. After Brannon Lee’s extra point, the Tarpons led 7-0. On the second drive, Cheramie struck again, firing a laser beam into the waiting arms of Kyle Angeron to take a 14-0 lead with two minutes left in the opening quarter. After Ellender fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the score quickly ballooned to 20-0 when halfback Corbin Allen pushed into the end zone early in the second quarter. “We weren’t ready to play. We didn’t handle their early intensity,” Ellender coach Terry Washington said. “They took it to us and we didn’t have an answer.” Throughout the rest of the opening half, Ellender’s turnovers and failed execution made the game a playoff. Cheramie connected with Shak Dillon on a long pass to make it 27-0 with nine minutes left in the half. Allen scored two more times in the first half to give the Tarpons 41 firsthalf points. Ellender got its lone score of the half on a short run from Reginald Williams to push the game to its 41-6 margin at halftime. Skains credited his defense’s effort against an Ellender offense that’s loaded with athletes. “We did a good job making them uncomfortable and forcing them to do things they’re not comfortable doing,” Skains said. “That was about as well as the defense has played this season. We followed our
game plan well.” With the win, South Lafourche is now 5-3 and 3-0 in district play. The Tarpons next game will be its biggest of the season – a Friday night homecoming showdown with Assumption, who is 7-1 and also 30 in district. The winner of Friday’s game will be the 2015 District Champion. Skains said he expects a wild, rowdy environment at Memorial Stadium. He said the Tarpons need to play well to beat a game Mustangs squad. “They’re really good,” Skains said. “They do a lot of things well. We have to have a good week of practice and be ready to play very well on Friday night.” ___
Trojans drop third straight, fall to Hahnville
All season long, Central Lafourche coach Keith Menard has praised his team’s offensive line for their physicality and ability to open running lanes to power the Trojans offense. But in Friday night’s game against Hahnville, the Central Lafourche linemen were outmatched and Hahnville completely stifled the Trojans attack. The Tigers beat Central 28-6 on Friday, using a dominant defensive effort to spark the win. The Trojans had just 128 total yards in the defeat, which is their third-straight loss of the season. “Sometimes, you just run into a team that outmans you and whips you,” Trojans coach Keith Menard said. “Our kids played their tails off. We have zero complaints about the effort or how hard we worked. But they just were more physical. They whipped us.” Hahnville set the tone early on Friday night. The Trojans punted the football early, downing it at the 1yard-line. But the Tigers showed championshiplevel poise, driving down

the field 99 yards to take an early 6-0 lead. With that lead, Hahnville never looked back. They scored two more times in the first half to take a 21-0 halftime lead. The Tigers held the Trojans to just 30 total yards at halftime. “We just didn’t get enough yards on first down,” Menard said. “We need to get in manageable situations to be successful and we just didn’t do that enough on Friday night.” The pace slowed down in the second half. The Tigers went on top 28-0 in the fourth quarter on a short touchdown run from Norquell Flowers. The Trojans got on the scoreboard late in the game on a short pass from quarterback Austin Aucoin
to Nelton Allen. The Trojans will take on Terrebonne on Friday in Mathews. It will be senior night for the team.
Cressionie wins 7th week of football contest
The 7th week’s winner of the Lafourche Gazette Football contest is Charlene Cressionie of 220 Church St., Raceland. Charlene’s was the only entry with 3 wrong. Winners can pick up their cash prize at the Gazette office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Carver Meet Justin Boudoin
Justin Boudoin of Raceland has been carving for a decade. His preferred method is Decorative Gunner Style. Gunners are carved from several types of woods. Sometimes a mix of these woods is used on one bird depending on the use of the decoy. The Gunner Decoys are often made hollow, which relieves stress on the wood and creates a much lighter bird. Justin’s favorite species to create is a Teal Duck and often sells his carvings to collectors. He is part of a group of carvers that promotes Cajun heritage, decoys, carving and keeping the age-old tradition thriving. One of his proudest carving moments happened when he started to compete against older carvers at
40th Annual
competitions and beginning bringing in the first place price for some of his creations. “Since I began carving 10 years ago, I’ve always enjoyed it. Every year I see my work progress. I enjoy taking classes and always learn new techniques from the older generations,” Justin said. He believes that a continuous effort is needed to keep the art form alive and that younger people need to be taught to carve in order to keep this valuable resource thriving. “There are not many young carvers and unfortunately it’s a dying art form. Hopefully I can pass it down someday to keep the tradition going,” He said.

No. 4 LSU, No. 7 Alabama now can only wait for showdown 2-B
Wednesday, October 28, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
JOHN ZENOR AP Sports Writer
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama and LSU have navigated rugged stretches leading up to a two-week wait. Then comes what figures to be the most hyped Southeastern Conference game of the regular season.
The fourth-ranked Tigers and seventh-ranked Crimson Tide both have open dates before the big SEC West rendezvous at Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium on Nov. 7. “Definitely looking forward to it,” Tigers receiver Malachi Dupre said after Saturday night’s 48-20 win
over Western Kentucky. “You are talking about a game that everybody has marked on their calendar a year before it happens.” Alabama (7-1, 4-1) has won the last four meetings. LSU (7-0, 4-0) is the last unbeaten team in the league and powered by the nation’s leading rusher Leonard Fournette. Both received at least one first-place vote in Sunday’s Associated Press Top 25. Now, they get a week of rest, fine tuning, extra film study — and, of course, hype. The break comes at a good time before a matchup of smashmouth teams powered by big, powerful runners and top10 rushing defenses. Fournette is regarded as the Heisman Trophy front-runner with 1,352 yards and 15 touchdowns. Alabama’s Derrick Henry has racked up 1,044 yards and 14 touchdowns. “I expect a matchup between two power football
teams,” LSU linebacker Kendell Beckwith said. “I guess you can call us twin teams. I definitely think they are going to come out and try and pound the football. We will be ready. We see it every day in practice. We will be ready.” Beyond Fournette, LSU quarterback Brandon Harris is coming off a career performance. He passed for 286 yards and three touchdowns, two of them for 50-plus yards, against Western Kentucky. Alabama coach Nick Saban said he could tell his team was getting weary in Saturday’s 19-14 win over Tennessee on Henry’s 14yard touchdown with 2:24 left followed by a forced fumble. “We were tired out there, dead-legged,” Saban said. “Didn’t look very quick, didn’t look very fast. Didn’t have a lot of energy like we usually do. I think that’s playing eight games in a row.” Other SEC teams have
Central Lafourche High will host its first annual alumni basketball game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 in the Trojans gym in Mathews. Former Central Lafourche players and coaches from past teams are invited to play, coach or spectate during the game. All players will be announced the year they graduated, starting with the 1970s to 2015. The odd numbered year graduates will play the even numbered year players. The cost for each player is $25. The game, which will consist of two 20-minute halves, will start at 7 p.m. The game will use the 5on-5 rule. There will be a 3point contest at halftime. Before the game, t-shirts will be handed out and there will be a meal served
to all participants from 5-6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for Central Lafourche’s boys basketball team. Admission for fans is $5. For information, call the schools main phone at 985-532-3319 or email bjorgeron@ mylpsd.com.
fallen by the wayside since 10 teams were ranked in the Top 25. Now, there are five, including No. 11 Florida, No. 19 Mississippi and No. 25 Mississippi State. The Tide has been an overwhelming force on the road but has had some struggles at home, losing to No. 19 Mississippi and either trailing or tied with Arkansas and Tennessee at halftime.
“I don’t know why that is, it’s just funny,” Henry said. “We haven’t played a complete game at home yet, but we’ve got to build off this win, prepare right in the bye week into next week. We’ve got to finish better when we’re at home.” AP college football website: collegefootball.ap.org AP Sports Writer Brett Martel in Baton Rouge contributed to this report.

Saints credit turnaround to improvement by younger players BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — When Sean Payton reflects on the Saints’ recent resurgence, he recalls being struck by how many players earlier this year needed directions to the charter terminal at Louis Armstrong International Airport. Seven weeks into the season, the newest and youngest Saints know exactly where to go to catch flights for road games. They know where to park, as well as how long it takes to get there. That, Payton suggests, is analogous to how they’ve been functioning on the field during a string of three victories in the past four games. “When you have a younger team, man, there are certain things that maybe you haven’t had to emphasize as much that you can’t take for granted. Things come up weekly, whether it’s a rule, whether
it’s something outside of being on the field,” Payton said Monday. “Quickly getting up to speed and quickly improving each week — I think our younger players have done that. I like the enthusiasm they’re playing with. ... That energy and enthusiasm can go a long way.” Nearly half the Saints’ current players were not on the active roster last season. A number of those players are in the first few years of their pro careers and had little or no regular-season experience before last month. As their mistakes become fewer and their production rises, the Saints are looking increasingly competitive. “It’s a good feeling when you kind of put decent wins together and you can build confidence and you’re able to get into your game plans more. We’ve definitely felt that,” center

Max Unger said. “We’re playing a lot looser. It’s one of those things where you just kind of have to trust your game plan and your talent, because we know that the talent’s there.” As bleak as the season looked for New Orleans at 0-3 or 1-4, two straight wins have lifted the Saints to 3-4, 1½ games behind Minnesota (4-2) for the final NFC wild-card playoff spot. Yet, with more than half the season remaining, safety Kenny Vaccaro said the Saints should avoid getting wrapped up in playoff scenarios. “The best thing for us, since we got kind of put in a hole the first three games, is kind of put our head down and take this step by step, game by game. Because, at 3-4 right now, we don’t need to be thinking about playoffs,” he said. It remains to be seen how much of the Saints’ recent success can be attributed to a youth improvement, or simply a relatively soft portion of the schedule. Two of New Orleans’ three victories have come against Dallas and Indianapolis, teams which are both below .500. But New Orleans also is responsible for rival Atlanta’s only loss this season. This Sunday, the Saints have an opportunity to climb back to .500 when they host the New York Giants, who improved to 4-3 with a win over Dallas on Sunday. The Giants will face an offense which includes two starting receivers, Brandon Coleman and Willie Snead, who were on the practice squad last season and are only in their second seasons out of college.
On defense, New Orleans rotates in several rookie linemen: starter Bobby Richardson, as well as reserves Tyeler Davison and Tavaris Barnes. Starting linebackers Stephone Anthony and Hau’oli Kikaha are rookies. Delvin Breaux, who has been starting at cornerback all season because Keenan Lewis has been hobbled, also is a first-year NFL player who came from the CFL. New Orleans’ defense ranked last after Week 5 and is 30th now, giving up 404.9 yards per game. But the unit is increasingly producing momentum-changing sacks, turnovers or clutch thirddown stops. Defensive end Cameron Jordan has five sacks in the past two victories. “I can’t be more proud of the D-line and the way we’re playing right now,” Jordan said. “We’re dealing with a lot of growing pains, but at the same time we’re overcoming a lot of different things.” Meanwhile, after creating three turnovers in Sunday’s 27-21 victory at Indianapolis, the Saints now have four interceptions and seven fumble recoveries, tying them for eighth in the NFL in total takeaways with 11. “I like this team. I think this team has fight,” Vaccaro said. “We have guys that can handle adversity. I think we mesh together good. I think we have nowhere to go but up. We have a lot of young players, but everybody has a lot of heart on this team, and I truly mean that.” ___
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Jared Overstreet rushed for 200 yards and a touchdown as Sam Houston State defeated Nicholls State 37-7 in pouring rain Saturday night, stretching a win streak to five games. The constant downpour hampered passing as both teams combined for 98 yards in the air. Jared Johnson completed 7 of 13 passes for 63 yards and the first two touchdowns for the Bearkats (5-2, 5-1 Southland). Seven Bearkats ran the
ball 55 times for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Overstreet opened the second quarter with a 12-yard TD run. His 200 yards was a career best at Sam Houston after transferring from Texas in 2013. Tuskani Figaro put Nicholls (1-6, 1-4) on the board with an 80-yard run around left end in the third quarter. He completed 6 of 20 passes for 35 yards. The Bearkats, with the top scoring offense in the FCS, has outscored its last five opponents 242-77.

PRAYERS
HURRICANE PRAYER To avert storms & hurricanes Father, all the elements of nature obey your command. Calm the storms and hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your goodness. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen _________________________ THE MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention here). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it, then in your own merciful eyes. It will become your favor not mine. Amen Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail. J.B. _________________________
