Mathews woman convicted of murder loses appeal

Old time fun …

A 48-yearold Mathews woman serving consecutive life sentences for killing her two Amy Hebert young children lost her bid to overturn her convictions. The Daily Comet reports the Louisiana Supreme Court on Friday rejected Amy T. Hebert’s claims that her trial attorney provided a constitutionally inadequate defense in 2009. The court, in an unsigned opinion, concluded that Hebert also failed to show her appeals attorneys ignored issues and that there was no “reasonable probability” she would have won on appeal if her attorneys had raised other issues. Changes coming to child support

The State of Louisiana is transitioning to a new Stored Value Card for Child Support clients. All child support clients are urged to immediately verify their current mailing address with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Clients are also strongly encouraged to enroll in direct deposit - a more convenient, secure, and efficient method to receive child support payments. “Our primary focus during this transition is to ensure that timely child support payments are received by our families,” said DCFS Secretary Suzy Sonnier. T-Doc, Merdock, Marty and Rock stir up some delicious sauce piquante at the 2nd Annual “La Fete des Vieux Temps”, or Festival of Old Times, held last weekend on the grounds of the Raceland Tourist Center. Cooler temperatures, along with a variety of food, music, and traditional features and highlights, ensured another successful festival for the area.

“Fish the Bayou” memorial fishing tournament raises funds for scholarships for high school seniors

Evans Doucet and Gary Gremillion cook cracklin’ during last weekend’s Leeville Fishing Rodeo. And if fishing’s your thing, the “Fish the Bayou” event will be held Saturday at the Staff photo by Babs Larose Civic Center.

The 2015 version of the “Fish the Bayou” event, designed to create support and awareness for Louisiana’s blue-collar workforce through a fishing tournament, will be held at the Larose Civic Center on October 10th. It’s the third year that the Dusty Richardel Memorial Foundation (DRMF) hosts a gathering which crams a fishing rodeo, food, prizes, and entertainment into one day in the hope of raising money for a worthy cause. DRMF is a non-profit organization that awards scholarships to Louisiana high school seniors who plan to embark directly into the blue collar work force rather than following traditional university curriculums.

Autism doesn’t slow down local teen

The foundation was created in memory of the late Dusty Richardel of Larose. Dusty’s carpentry career did not follow the path to college but those who knew him could appreciate his aspirations in life. As a young adult, he had tremendous initiative and a strong work ethic. His four years of hands-on experience taught him the skills necessary to become a talented carpenter. By helping Louisiana high-school seniors who are either going to a technical/vocational school, or going straight to work after graduation, the Foundation can honor those students, like Dusty, who would otherwise have no assistance with the start of their new careers. 15-year old starts his own business with a goal in mind Ulysses Gisclair, Contributing Writer

A young man has recently found his entrepreneurial spirit and is starting his own business detailing cars, despite the challenges he faces. Anthony Gibbons is a local 15-year old from Lockport who struggles with Autism. With his disability, social interaction and communications are a challenge for Anthony and would make it difficult for him to find a steady job. His mother, Addie Gibbons, however, knew that it was important to teach Anthony good work ethics and self-sufficiency so from an early age she and her father Eugene Ryman, Jr. had Anthony helping with chores and working along side them. One of the jobs that they gave him was cleaning the inside of his mother’s car. They soon realized that what Anthony lacked in social skills, he made up for with a keen meticulousness in his

work. “He gets the inside of a car completely spotless,” said Addie. “You can’t disturb him while he’s doing it, and it may take a while but he will get it perfectly.” Anthony’s motivation for working so hard is his goal of one day owning a meerkat. After having watched documentaries on the interesting animals Anthony became adamant on having one. His family supports his goal as long as he is the one raising the money to buy one. The goal will cost Anthony at least $5000 dollars. Meerkats are $2000 dollars each and their habitat enclosures are $3000 dollars. The cage is so expensive because meerkats are digging animals and one has the capability of digging through one’s home. See Anthony Page 6-A

Woman accused of injecting 14-year-old daughter with heroin

COATESVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia woman repeatedly injected her 14-year-old daughter and another teen with heroin, even tying a string around their arms to isolate their veins, prosecutors said Monday. The Chester County district attorney’s office alleged that Jessica Lynn Riffey, 34, of West Caln Township, supplied the 14year-old girl and a 16-yearold boy with heroin and injected them multiple times last month. Riffey was charged with corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and drug delivery. She was jailed in lieu of $50,000 pending a preliminary hearing Friday. Prosecutors also allege that Riffey’s boyfriend supplied heroin for the teens to snort. He has been charged separately with drug dealing and other offenses. District Attorney Thomas Hogan said the family lived in a trailer in which numerous people were using heroin. He said the mother was supposed to be caring for and protecting her daughter and instead exposed her to the drug and enabled her use of it. ___

California and North Dakota each lost one. Arkansas, Kansas, Ohio and West Virginia each gained one rig. Utah and Wyoming were unchanged. The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999. ___

Police: Child, dogs removed Thibodauxville from filthy Thibodaux home Fall Festival THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Police in Thibodaux say a child and 17 dogs have been removed from a home where investigators said the living conditions were deplorable. Two adults now face child desertion charges. Three others at the same address were cited for cruelty to animals and related charges. All received misdemeanor summonses and were released at the scene. In a news release Monday, Thibodaux police said

an investigation began Friday after a dog got away from the address. The release says that, when police sought the dog’s owner, they discovered urine, feces, mold and rotten food throughout the home where the five adults lived with the 5-year-old child. Police said the child was removed from the home by state family services officials. The 17 dogs were taken to the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter.

Until the end of World War II there were only five New Orleans radio stations reaching us. In 1946, KCIL in Houma went on the air and in 1948, Mr. Ferdinand Block and partners Delta Broadcaster, Inc., applied for a license to open a station in Thibodaux. KCIL, only 15 miles away, took them to court and prevented the license being granted until 1953 when on December 24th, KTIB went on the air. In 1949, I had a radio show, “Leroy Martin and the Southern Serenaders, on KCIL. In 1950 I moved it to WWEZ in New Orleans. Every week we received hundreds of card and letters and dozens of telegrams that arrived while on the air. Fast-forward to 1954, I had a new job in the Assessor’s office and a Saturday afternoon program on KTIB. New station manager Hal Benson called me to his office and said, “This Neilson report shows that although we’re new, one program tops the listening audience in our entire area and they don’t even know the name. They just list it as ‘Saturday afternoon hillbilly music’. (Which is what country music was called then.) He said, “You’ve struck a chord with listeners and I want you to work for us full time. From now on it’s “The Leroy Martin Show and they’ll soon know your

name. “Mr. Benson, I answered, “I have a good job that I don’t want to give up but I want to continue my program. “We’ll talk it over, but look this over. It’s been piling up on my desk, and he handed me a paper bag full of cards and letters addressed to “Leroy or “Saturday afternoon hillbilly music or “That Martin Guy. As my jaw hit the floor he said, “Now let’s get us each a quart of Falstaff beer. I knew where beer was sold in quart bottles so we drove to Hosea Hill’s Sugar Bowl bar, picked up two quarts and went back to the station to sip and talk. I have some great stories about Hosea Hill’s club involving Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Little Richard, me, Hal and Elvis, but that’s for future columns. As we sat and talked, Hal tried to convince me to work for him and I tried to keep the program as a sideline. I won, but rolling around in my mind all the while was the line that Humphrey Bogart said to Claude Rains at the very end of the movie ‘Casablanca’: “This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. That it was! Stay tuned! Sorry, that was radio. Just keep reading my column. BYE NOW! Comments are welcomed at: leroymartin1929@gmail.com

Since its founding, Lockport has asked their young men and women to proudly represent and defend them in our nation’s wars and conflicts. The American Legion Post 83 is seeking help to honor all who served by placing a monument at the Bayouside Park in Lockport to show their gratitude to those who protected and served. The Legion would prefer to not put individual names, as they feel that someone may get left out. Instead, they want to honor all Veterans who served unselfishly whether during war or peace time. The monument will have the name and insignia of all branches of the armed services on a plaque along with the message, “In honor and memory of all men and women who served in the Armed forces of the United States. The monument Legionnaires hope to erect will cost

It’s been said that “they who do not study history are bound to repeat it and there are some things that should not be repeated, like a depression, the “Dust Bowl or World War II. Here’s a brief history. Once upon a time there was a place that had no IPhones, ITunes, IPads, I-Hops, Internet, Amazon, Facebook or even television, and I was born and raised smack dab in the middle of it. It was called the Cajun Land of Louisiana. Were we miserable and despondent? No, because we couldn’t miss things that hadn’t been invented yet. We did have one form of entertainment available and free to all. It was called “radio! My Dad bought our first radio, a used set, in 1937. It had a big cabinet and sat in the corner for

An additional meerkat may be needed as well because meerkats are social animals and do not do well in solitude. “He pays for all of his own stuff. Even when we stop for food he buys me a cup of coffee because he knows that there are no free rides in life,” said Eugene. Anthony’s business is called Anthony’s Au-some Wash, making the best of his disorder. Anyone interested in having their car detailed can call and set up an appointment with his mother, Addie on her business line (985) 228-2322. Anthony is charging $12 dollars for small cars for inside and out service and $15-$20 dollars for trucks and SUVs depending on the size of the vehicle. Customers are asked to be patient and leave Anthony to his work. “You’ll have to drop your car off, but Anthony will have it spotless when you get back,” said Addie. Anthony still needs supervision while he is working for now, but he is growing more and more self reliant in his work and in his life as time goes on. In many ways Anthony has learned to take care of himself such as cleaning up after himself and cooking small meals. Addie’s goal is for him to someday live in his own place nearby her. The difficulty of the task ahead doesn’t seem to faze Anthony, as it appears to only strengthen his determination. He is currently working on paying for a better set up for his business and he has no plans on quitting or slowing down even after he has his meerkat.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and District Attorney Cam Morvant are once again encouraging Lafourche Parish citizens to Paint the Parish Purple during the month of October in order to help raise awareness of domestic violence. The public is also invited to attend a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 at the Lafourche Central Market in Raceland as victims of domestic violence are remembered and survivors are honored. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office, and The P.A.C.T. Place Supervised Visitation and Exchange Center have teamed up with CASA of Lafourche, The Haven, and South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority to sponsor the Paint the Parish Purple initiative. Collectively, they are encouraging every citizen wear a purple ribbon during the entire month of October while letting others know the meaning behind the ribbon. For the third straight year, Parish President Charlotte Randolph has signed a proclamation declaring October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in Lafourche Parish and designating October 28, as “Paint the Parish Purple Day.”

A jury in Thibodaux found Hebert, who is serving her sentence at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel, guilty in 2009 of Camille, 9, and son Braxton, 7, at their home. Hebert pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Jurors declined to impose a death sentence sought by prosecutors. The court cited 17th Judicial District Judge Jeromme J. Barbera III’s ruling in 2014, which denied Hebert’s request to overturn her first-degree murder conviction and sentence, in the decision. Barbera concluded that “defense counsel used their experience and training in the most skillful manner to properly defend the petitioner against the charge.”

Citizens are asked to wear purple all month long, especially on Wednesday, October 28, which is also the date of the candlelight vigil. “Our agency continues to be a strong advocate for awareness of domestic violence,” said Sheriff Webre. “We are consistently working with lawmakers to enact legislation to help prevent domestic violence, and to ensure victims have the rights and the actual ability to seek help and escape a cycle of violence. Our parish-wide display of purple sends a strong message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in Lafourche Parish.” Citizens are also asked to wear purple clothing and to change outdoor lighting and décor at their homes to purple by using purple lights, displaying purple wreaths, or tying purple ribbons to mailboxes, trees or vehicle antennas. Citizens are also asked to change their social media profile photo to a special purple image of support which can be found on the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office web-

site: www.lpso.net. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has turned its social media profile photos purple to help spur this effort. “We are happy to work with so many outstanding agencies to Paint the Parish Purple in the month of October,” said First Assistant District Attorney Kristine Russell. “The District Attorney’s office has always taken a tough stance against domestic violence offenders in court, and we shall continue to do so. But this initiative also provides us with a good opportunity to remind everyone of the resources we have at our disposal to assist victims of domestic violence. Their safety and well-being are always our top priority.” For more information about the candlelight vigil or the Paint the Parish Purple initiative, contact The P.A.C.T. Place at (985) 532-4390, or visit www.lpso.net.

Attention Residents of Council Dist. 9

District 9’s recently converted Obama Democrat councilman gave threats to commercial fishermen for utilizing the publicly-funded boat dock at Leeville. Hopefully, consideration is given to wayfaring trawlers in our area needing a safe harbor for emergencies or severe weather. The last thing a distressed mariner needs, in case of emergency docking, is the law enforcement of the sheriff’s office, port commission, a $500 fine, jail time, and the scariest of all … the District 9 councilman “patrolling himself”. President Obama would be proud of the councilman’s strong arm, Gestapo-type tactics on working class people. Who will this egotistical councilman come after next? It’s time for a real change! Give the councilman all deserving benefits, a gold star, trophy, bronze plaque, and his walking papers! We the people, not him the government!

Central trumps HL Bourgeois, ending Braves’ unbeaten season Gazette Staff Reports

Last week, the Central Lafourche football team saw its undefeated season end in a loss against South Lafourche. This week, the Trojans returned the favor and handed a different opponent its first defeat. Central Lafourche rode a dominant defensive effort to top H.L. Bourgeois 14-7 on Friday night – a game played before a jam-packed crowd in Mathews. The Trojans defense were the stars of the show, shutting out the Braves offense for the entire game. The Braves only touch-

down came on an interception that was returned for a touchdown. “Our defense held them to zero,” Trojans coach Keith Menard said. “We shut them out. That’s not easy to do because that’s a good H.L. Bourgeois offense. We wondered all week how we’d respond after losing a tough game to South Lafourche. Well, our defense stepped up to the challenge and made sure it didn’t happen again on Friday night.” Offense was at a premium for both teams on Friday night. Neither team scored in the first quarter and the entire game was extremely physical – especially in the trenches at the line of scrimmage. The Trojans started having success offensively at the end of the first quarter and the team turned it into points on the first play of the second quarter on a 24-yard touchdown run from Andrew Griffin. After the two-point conversion, the Trojans led 8-0. After forcing a punt, the Trojans scored again on their next drive midway through the second quarter on a long touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Aucoin to David Robinson to go ahead 14-0. The 2point conversion was

missed. After getting another stop, Central’s offense was on the move again right before halftime and was looking to possibly put the game away for good. But the Braves stepped up and stole momentum when Brent Ramirez intercepted Aucoin and took the ball 71 yards for a touchdown to make the game 14-7 at halftime. “Those are plays that we need to eliminate,” Menard said. “We had a chance to add to our lead and we let them back into the game. We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot like that.” The Central Lafourche defense never buckled. In the second half, the Braves had multiple opportunities, but were never able to tie the game. The most threatening drive came late in the game when H.L. Bourgeois got to the Trojans 33-yard-line. Central’s defense stiffened and kept the Braves out of the end zone, forcing a turnover on downs and sealing the win. “Those guys have played so well for us all year long,” Menard said of his defense. “It’s no one guy. It’s not any specific individual. We just get a good, total team effort.” With the win, the Trojans improved to 4-1 on the season. Menard said the challenge now is to continue to push and go beyond its current mark. Central Lafourche has finished with four wins in each of the past two seasons. The Trojans face Thibodaux on Friday night. “We don’t need motivation for that game,” Menard said. “The kids will be ready, and we just have to keep pushing one game at a time. If we do, we think we can have a six, seven or eight-win year.” ___

Tarpons fall to Plaquemine

Last week, South Lafourche rode special teams to a win against Central Lafourche. But in Friday’s game,

Sams leads McNeese State to 37-7 win over NSU

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Daniel Sams threw for 140 yards and one touchdown and ran for 89 yards and another score as McNeese State rolled over Nicholls 37-7 on Saturday. Sams, who has totaled 647 passing yards and 346 rushing yards through four games, completed a 34yard scoring pass to Tavarious Battiste with 8:25 remaining in the first quarter. McNeese State (4-0, 30 Southland Conference) was ahead 27-0 before Nicholls (0-4, 0-2) scored when Tuskani Figaro hit Damion Jeanpiere on a 52yard scoring strike with 27 seconds left in the first half. The McNeese State defense, which has blanked opponents in 13 of 16 quarters this season, has only allowed 27 points through the first four games, the least since the 1979 team allowed 26. Kent Shelby caught three passes for 73 yards and one score and Battiste grabbed three for 46 yards and a touchdown.

that same unit was a constant sore thumb in a loss to Plaquemine. The Tarpons allowed two returns for touchdowns and had a kick blocked to set up another score in a 44-14 loss to the Green Devils. The loss dropped South Lafourche to 2-3 on the season. “Special teams killed us tonight,” South Lafourche coach Dennis Skains said. “Offensively, we need to convert more third downs, and defensively, we didn’t like how we played in the second half, so you never really know how the game would turn out without those returns. But those things can’t happen. We have to clean it up and get better.” The Tarpons played pretty well early against the Green Devils. After Plaquemine scored first and missed the extra point to go up 6-0, South Lafourche answered back on a long run from Corbin Allen to go on top 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. But the rest of the game was all Plaquemine. The Green Devils took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter on a long pass to Wayne Toussant in the second quarter. Plaquemine scored right before half on a short run by Tyler Wesley to go on top 20-7 at halftime. “I thought in the first half, we actually played pretty well,” Skains said. “We just didn’t take it with us to the second half.” On the opening play of the second half, Toussant ran the opening kickoff for a touchdown to go on top 27-7. The Green Devils used powerful running to add a few more scores to put the game away. Jaydon Cheramie added the Tarpons only score of the second half on a long scramble. The Tarpons open district play next week against Morgan City, and Skains said it’s a huge game for his team. “We need a win,” Skains told his team after the game. “We need a good week of practice and we need a win.”

Victory gives Saints hope, though flaws remain exposed GUERRY SMITH, Associated Press

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints feel a lot better about themselves after securing their first victory of this season, but they know they still face an uphill battle to climb into playoff contention. A 26-20 overtimehome victory against injury-ravaged Dallas on Sunday night left the Saints (1-3) three games behind NFC South co-leaders Atlanta and Carolina and nowhere near where they want to be. “We finally got the monkey off our back, but like we’ve been saying all morning, it’s just the first one,” said rookie linebacker Stephone Anthony, who had seven tackles and a sack for a youth-infused defense. “We have to go get some more. You can’t get two without getting one, so it’s a good start.” Topping the list of positives was quarterback Drew Brees’ solid performance after missing his first game due to injury in his 15-year NFL career. Playing with a bruised rotator cuff,

he completed 33 of 41 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Most of his completions were short throws, including the sideline floater that running back C.J. Spiller turned into an 80-yard game-winner in overtime, but Brees appeared to get stronger as the game went along. He directed scoring drives on four of the Saints’ six possessions after halftime, and another one ended in Zach Hocker’s missed 30-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in regulation. “We are always going to take what they give us,” Brees said. “I felt like we were getting separation early, so the opportunity was there for those quick hitters.” He also found a new favorite target, connecting with second-year pro Willie Snead six times for 89 yards. Snead, an undrafted free agent in 2014 who has 16 catches for the year, bounced from Cleveland to Carolina to New Orleans last season, but never played in a regular season game until this season. “He’s a smart player,” coach Sean Payton said. “He’s tough. He’s extremely competitive and that’s something we saw early in training camp. He competes every snap.” So did the rookies on defense against Dallas. Five of them finished among the top six tacklers despite the return of veteran cornerback Keenan Lewis, safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. Anthony, taken with

the No. 31 overall pick, second-round selection Hau’oli Kikaha and fifthround addition Tyeler Davison became the first rookie trio in franchise history to register sacks in a nonstrike game. Kikaha added a teamhigh 11 tackles, while rookie end Bobby Richardson made two tackles for loss. “We have a good core of young guys,” said Anthony, who was drafted with a pick acquired in the Jimmy Graham trade to Seattle. “It’s early for all of us, and we’re still trying to figure this thing out. Hopefully in time we can become something special.” First, the Saints need to cut back on mistakes. The defensive backs drew four penalties on a Dallas touchdown drive in the first half — holding, illegal use of hands, face mask and pass interference — and two more flags prolonged possessions on third downs. The secondary ran its season total for penalties to 19, including seven on cornerback Brandon Browner and six on cornerback Delvin Breaux. “The first thing you look at is leverage and being on the right side of the receiver,” Payton said. “There’s one or two (penalties) in there that are kind of like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ But’s it’s been (a) pretty consistent (problem) and something we’ll continue to work on.” With a trip to struggling Philadelphia (1-3) next, New Orleans will see if it can string victories together. That’s the only way the Saints can dig themselves out of the hole they created in the first three weeks. “We are still on the bottom,” said tight end Ben Watson, who had three catches for 30 yards. “We still have a ways to go. But it’s encouraging to just come out on top.” NOTES: Payton confirmed an NBC report during the game Sunday night that four-time All-Pro guard Jahri Evans had arthroscopic knee surgery, adding it took place a week-and-a-half ago. Senio Kelemete has started for Evans in the past two games. Payton said Brees came out of the Dallas game healthy aside from normal soreness. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

Miles open to ‘shuffling’ personnel to improve LSU passing game

Wednesday, October 7, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

BRETT MARTEL, AP Sports Writer

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — As much confidence as LSU coach Les Miles expresses in the abilities of his receivers, he has apparently decided to see if the threat of lost playing time sharpens their focus. “We’re looking at shuffling the lineup. We’re looking at all those things,” Miles said Monday. “I like the effort of my wide receivers. It’s not as productive as it needs to be. It needs to be more in line with the coaching. ... We have to execute better. Period.” In a victory over Eastern Michigan that had more tense moments than the seventh-ranked Tigers would have liked, LSU (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) was 4 of 15 for 80 yards and no touchdowns through the air. At one point in the third quarter, EMU was as close as eight points before the Tigers pulled away with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs for a 44-22 triumph. The Tigers had several drives end with field goals because of dropped passes, including passes that hit top receivers Travin Dural and Malachi Dupre in the hands in or near the end zone. Dupre graded the receiving corps at “F-minus” against EMU, adding that “we can’t let anything close to that happen again.” So far this season, LSU is averaging 95.5 yards through the air per game. So far, low passing numbers haven’t mattered because of a power running game led by Heisman Trophy candidate Leonard Fournette, who already has rushed for 864 yards and 11 TDs (an average of 8.7 yards per carry and 216 yards per game).

Yet, LSU has six SEC games left, starting at South Carolina this Saturday, and followed by a home date against currently unbeaten and 11th-ranked Florida the weekend after. So wide receiver John Diarse was not surprised to hear Miles was at least considering “shuffling” the lineup. “If he does go along with that, apparently he has a plan and we have to trust that plan and be prepared for those changes,” Diarse said. “Any time you kind of have those hiccups on your team, your coach has to make some type of change, whether it’s a big change or whether it’s a small change. “Now we’re about to go into the meat of our schedule with SEC opponents, so we’ve got to find something,” Diarse continued. “We’ve got to find a rhythm. We’ve got to find a flow of things.” Miles recently has not allowed quarterback Brandon Harris to speak to

media, but the coach does not sound too concerned about his quarterback’s recent form. “Brandon Harris is really doing what we ask him to do,” Miles said. “The balls that he’s throwing, he’s really on target. We just need to catch it. I think that will happen. I think our wide receivers are poised to have a good year and this is not characteristic of them, dropping those balls.” “We’re kind of in a position where we’d like to be a little bit more hitting on all cylinders but in reality we’re really close,” Miles added. Quarterbacks and receivers at the pro and college levels often talk about the importance of establishing rhythm and tempo in the passing game, which can be hard to do at LSU, where 75 percent (186 of 248) of total offensive plays called this season have been running plays. LSU’s receivers aren’t about to ask for more passes with Fournette’s success, but there’s an emphasis on improving the balance, as well as pitching in to help the ground game. See LSU Page 12-A

watch … ” The father dialed the number again. “Hello, is Melvin there?” asked the father. “Now look here!” came the heated reply. “You just called this number and I told you that there is no Melvin here! You’ve got lot of guts calling again!” The receiver slammed down hard. The father turned to his daughter and said, “You see, that was anger. Now I’ll show you what exasperation means.” He dialed the same number, and when a violent voice roared, “Hello!” The father calmly said, “Hello, this is Melvin. Have there been any calls for me?”

“If they were recruiting me and they told me they were going to give the ball to Leonard, or the running backs 75 percent of the time, it might be hard to get a recruit at the receiver position or quarterback position,” Dupre said. “But at the end of the day, we’re here ... we’ve got to live with it. “We’re doing the best that we can do blocking, and then when we get an opportunity, we’ve got to make the best of it. Because there’s going to be

times this year where we’re going to have to have it.” Notes: Miles said linebacker Lamar Louis, who sat out the second half last Saturday, was not badly injured. “It’s not as serious as the missing of a half might seem,” Miles said. ... Miles said tight end Dillon Gordon was working out Monday, but that he did not have a specific return date for Gordon (heel) or safety Jalen Mills (knee). He classified both as “dayto-day.” ___ AP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Follow Brett Martel on Twitter: www.twitter.com/brettmartel
