Another 10 miles of I-49 North opens
SHREVEPORT – Monday Governor Bobby Jindal highlighted the opening of ten miles of I-49 North from U.S. 71 to Arkansas’ state line. This $113 million expansion project establishes a vital transportation connection that will allow goods and services to move faster throughout Louisiana, while supporting an average of 10,000 commuters daily. The announcement was held in conjunction with the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department’s opening of its I-49 portion in Arkansas. Governor Jindal said, “The I-49 corridor represents an important infrastructure link not only for Louisiana and Arkansas, but also for the nation’s transportation network.” The entire I-49 North project spans approximately 36 miles from north of Shreveport to the Arkansas border. Nine of the eleven segments are complete and 30 miles are open to drivers. See I-49 Page 6-A

Floodwall and drainage project receives green light
Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph signed an agreement on Oct. 29 to begin work on the much-needed Industrial Floodwall and Drainage Project in Larose. The federally funded agreement between the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and Lafourche Parish Government will help place an 8-foot floodwall stretching 2,648-feet on Industrial Park Road
where North American Shipyard in Larose currently resides. In addition to the floodwall, the project seeks to elevate an existing section of Industrial Park Road to 7-feet, thus improving storm protection and drainage in the surrounding area. The project is just another example of the many needed projects that have been indentified and executed following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Industrial Floodwall and Drainage Project, which makes use of $5 million in FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant money, is being led by Angelette-Picciola, LLC, of Larose. Consulting Engineer Larry Picciola of Angelette-Picciola said work on the project is slated to begin in January with an anticipated completion date sometime next summer. According to Randolph, this particular project was several years in the making and represents a major investment toward bettering the lives of many south Lafourche residents. “Words cannot begin to express how excited I am to see us reach this point,” Randolph said. “At times it felt like we’d never get to this place, but See Project Page 6-A
Children benefit from Toys For Tots program Marc C. Kimball Contributing Writer
Every child should wake on Christmas morning and be excited about a gift! Some children in our community don’t always have that opportunity. In 1947 Major Dale Hendricks brought a homemade doll his wife had stitched together to a needy child. That single, generous act started Toys For Tots, which is what Major Hendricks and his Marine buddies named their foundation. The Toys For Tots Foundations is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity and serves as the fund raising, funding and support organization for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program. Their primary mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The communities are now nationwide, rippling out from its 1947 California roots. Today, the organization hands out some 15million toys in the continental U.S. and Toy For Tots is here, in our community. Retired Gunnery Sergeant Greg Terry served
with the Marine Corps for 22 years. A native and resident of Golden Meadow, Terry decided to put his retirement to good use towards a cause. “Four years ago I picked up the Toys for Tots program for Lafourche,” he says. “We lacked adequate coverage here in our area. We were always clumped in with the Houma drive. From the north end to the south end, we have all of Lafourche Parish covered,” he added. Over the last four years Gunnery Sergeant Terry has made a difference with the annual toy drive. Last year the Lafourche Parish Toys For Tots program handed out 11,000 toys to children in need. It’s a far cry from the humble beginning four years ago. “My daughter and I would sit on our front porch and wrap gifts that first year,” recalls Sgt. Terry. “The second year it got bigger, the third year … bigger and this year even bigger.” See Toys Page 6-A
The Greater Lafourche Port Commission, which manages Port Fourchon, recently received a 2014 update to an economic study initially commissioned in 2008. The updated study was done by Dr. Loren Scott, an economist and former chairman of the economics department at LSU. The economic impact of Port Fourchon grew in virtually every number and criteria listed in the study between 2008 and 2014, often by significant percentages. Average worker wages from jobs generated by port activity jumped 32 percent to over $56,000 annually while household earnings increased 88 percent from $350 million in 2008 to $657 million in 2014. Other prominent factors in the report include: one of every 13 jobs in the bayou region can be traced to the presence of Port Fourchon, and the job multiplier for the bayou region is 4.6, meaning that for every new job created at the port 3.6 new jobs are created elsewhere in the region. On a larger scale, the job multiplier for the state related to port activity is 6.2. Additionally, ongoing operational activity at Port Fourchon created almost $2.1 billion in sales for firms in the bayou region and some $2.6 billion in sales for firms in the state. See Port Page 6-A
NSU student athletes set high NCAA graduation success rate
Nicholls State University student athletes have the highest graduation rate among all Southland Conference schools in Louisiana, according to statistics released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association this week. The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report shows that 74 percent of Nicholls student athletes who began college in 2007 earned their degrees within six years. That’s an all-time high for Nicholls, marking the fourth consecutive year that the university shows overall academic improvement. Nicholls’ overall GSR ranks third among the 11 Southland Conference schools and fourth among Louisiana’s 11 public universities with Division I athletics — only trailing Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University and University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “This is a great accomplishment for the university’s coaches, support staff and faculty who work hard to ensure that students perform well both on the playing field and in the classroom,” said Dr. Bruce Murphy, Nicholls president. “I’m proud of our student athletes who put in long hours of coursework and practice each See NSU Page 6-A

He also accused Sutton of lying to the claims center administrator, Patrick Juneau, and to a court-appointed special master, former FBI Director Louis Freeh. Barbier said Sutton also should have disclosed before he took the job at the claims center that he was a business partner with Lerner in a separate venture and that he was involved with an offshore company seeking a damage settlement from BP. At Friday’s hearing, Barbier said there was no clear evidence that Reitano knew or asked for a fee from Andry and Lerner but he did criticize her for a conflict of interest involving a job connected to the claims center for her husband. The judge said that
while the lawyers had violated ethics rules, he said there was no evidence that the claims process itself was manipulated or corrupted. But Barbier said much harm had been done to the claims center because after the allegations were revealed claims were put on hold and the process suffered negative publicity. As a result, Barbier said, the claims process had received “tremendous injury to its integrity. “I rather regret that it has come to this. This is not what I was signing up to do when I took this job, he said. Barbier did not make any rulings or decisions on what sanctions he might impose on the lawyers. He did not say when he might do so.
Judge critical of 3 lawyers in Gulf damage claims CAIN BURDEAU Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Evidence clearly shows that a lawyer inside a court-supervised facility that handles damage claims over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and two outside attorneys lied about a system of payments set up to help speed claims through the process, a federal judge said Friday. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier’s comments came at the end of a day of testimony and arguments centered on allegations that Lionel Sutton III, a lawyer working for the center, got kickbacks in exchange for helping speed through a law firm’s client’s claims. Sutton, the only accused person to testify, denied any wrongdoing. He has resigned from the center. “I wasn’t a paid insider, Sutton testified. “I did not advance any claims for anybody. Accused along with Sutton is his wife, Christine Reitano, who also worked at the claims center. The hearing was convened by Barbier to look into the allegations, which were spelled out in a 2013 report commissioned by Barbier. Barbier said that Sutton and two outside lawyers — Jonathan Andry and Glen Lerner — lied about the payments and acted unethically. The judge charged that the three lawyers, who went to Tulane University law school together, clearly had acted unethically. Sutton is accused of receiving about $40,000 for helping speed up the claims of Andry and Lerner clients. The proceedings before Barbier are not criminal in nature. None of the lawyers has been charged with a crime. Barbier said he was deeply troubled by the lawyers’ moves to hide the payments in a “circuitous way. He was especially harsh in his criticism of Sutton for not divulging several conflicts of interest and lying about his involvement with Andry and Lerner.

“In a Small Pond” AUNTS,
In 1929 my Uncle Paul Callais, Jr. was 27 and took a job as a streetcar conductor in New Orleans. He got the wandering spirit. BAD DECISION! That same year the bloody streetcar strike of 1929 began. Next he sold insurance for National Life, owners of Radio Station WSM (We Shield Millions) and the Grand Ole Opry. That opened many doors and he even sold my mother a policy for me before I was christened. After moving to Metairie in 1940 he married Gertrude Toups. They were evidently late bloomers, as he was 38 and she was 35. They had no children. After she died he married a widow, Nelka, and his stepdaughter, also Nelka, married Paul’s nephew, Dudley Callais. Family connections. His sister, Elizabeth (Lizzy) often visited and she met an Irish Italian named George Styron. They married, moved to New Orleans and their only offsprings were identical twins, Ronald and Donald. We became lifelong friends and they loved to visit their country relatives. With our cousin Lorris Callais, Jr. (Jun) we formed a cowboy and Indian quartet that would have rivaled any “B” movie cowboys. Jun was a great villain, but he always had to die in the end, a part he disliked but he was always out voted. Jun had three sisters, Rose Mary, Beatrice and Camillia. He was born in1930, married Patty Gisclair in 1952 and they had three children, Rhonda, Errol and Ederett. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2004 at age 73. He had worked for Exxon for 40 years. My Dad worked for the Texaco distributor, and Uncle Lorris, Sr. was the Pan Am distributor. One day, Jun stopped in a Pan Am Tank truck and said “hop in”. We drove to Lockport and filled the big tank with Texaco. “We do this all the time,” he said. “When Texaco runs out, they come to us.” We had a good laugh and a new secret. Once I was asked to produce a charity talent show with local and regional celebrities and I asked Jun to be in it. “I have no talent,” he said. “I’ll make you some,” I said. I blacked his face and showed him how to pantomime Al Jolson singing “Mama”. “The Jolson Story” was a popular movie and he was a big hit, however he chose not to follow that career. The Styrons would visit often in George’s 1932 Lafayette, which was bigger than a modern minivan. Since I was eight I looked forward to my vacation with the twins in New Orleans. The ritual was a visit to Pontchartrain beach, (our Disneyland at the time), a picnic in City Park, a visit to Audubon Park Zoo, a ride on the miniature train, and hot dogs and popcorn. Their address was 8636 Plum Street, uptown. I never forgot it. Aunt Lizzy died of cancer at age 42, the only one of Paul and Irma Callais’ nine children who did not live past eighty. Donald and wife Anna had four children: Elizabeth, Donald, Jr., David and Robert. He retired from his 30-year army career as a Lt. Col. He died in 2013 at the age of 82 of Parkinson’s dis-

ease. Ronald followed his Uncle Paul with National Life and retired a district manager. Ronald and his wife Joan had three children: Leslie, Ronald, Jr.,
and Richard. He died from a lawn mower accident in 2013 also at age 82. When people referred to them as the “two twins” I would ask, “How many does it take?” On our trips to Audubon Park, we always visited Meteor Rock. Everybody knew it was not a meteor, just a rock left over from the last ice age. If New Orleanians had inhabited the earth then, there would have been no

Wedding and Engagement Story and Photo Guidelines
Engagement photographs and announcements MUST be received NO LATER than two weeks before the wedding date. Photos brought in any later than that are not guaranteed to be published. Wedding photos and stories should be received as soon as possible after the wedding. Wedding photos and stories received months after the event may not get published. Also, only 50th Anniversary photos and fifth generation family photos and stores are accepted.
were met without incident. A lack of affordable housing factored heavily into the decision to draft, apply and ultimately get accepted for federal grant money following hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. Upon completion, the homes in Thibodaux will be turned over to Lafourche ARC with the Housing Authority of Lafourche overseeing the dwellings in the Raceland area. One of the individuals that already secured an apartment in Raceland is 27-year-old Lafourche Parish resident Brittany Washington. The single, working mother of two said the Affordable Housing Unit is a Godsend for her and her family. Washington is hopeful housing options such as these become more commonplace in future years. “I am so thankful for the parish doing this, said Washington, who was told she would probably be able to move in to her unit in about two weeks. “It is so hard to find something reasonably priced, let alone new these days. The money collected from rent will be directed back into the units to maintain and insure them with any additional money going toward more low-income housing.

It is with great honor that Alora Renee’ and Ross “Asher are pleased to announce the engagement of their mother Lauren Elizabeth Toups to Jeremy Wayne Parks. The bride is the daughter of Sandra T. Chauvin and Tammy T. Chiasson of Lockport and the late Ronald J. Toups. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Toups and Ella Mae Elder and the late John Elder. The groom is the son of Jeffrey “Jeff Parks of Raceland and the late Gretchen C. Benoit of Bell Rose. He is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. William “Willie Chamberlain and Mary Jane Parks and the late Jimmy Parks. The wedding will be held in late November in Raceland.
Two sets of affordable housing units are almost ready to be moved in to, according to officials with Lafourche Parish Government, the Housing Authority of Lafourche Parish and Lafourche Arc. The two-bedroom, single-family units are the result of the successful distribution of $3 million in federal Community Development Block Grant dollars that were received by Lafourche Parish Government in 2011 as part of the Hurricane Gustav/Ike Recovery Program. Five of the units were constructed in Thibodaux behind LaCasa Del Sol Mexican Restaurant on Westover Drive, while the other seven are located in Raceland on Greenville Street. “These are low-to-moderate income homes for those who meet certain guidelines and qualifications, Lafourche Parish Housing Authority Executive Director Beryl Pitre said. Weimer Gros Flores, LLC, and J.C. Lewis Construction, LLC, were charged with the architectural design and construction, while Terry Arabie, a Projects Manager with Lafourche Parish Government, served as the head of performance monitoring to make sure certain deadlines

Port
From 1-A
The study also determined that should the port shut down for a three week period due to a hurricane, terrorist attack or other destructive phenomenon, likely impacts would be a loss of $11.2 billion in business sales to United States firms, a loss of over $3.1 billion in household earnings and a loss of over 65,000 jobs locally and nationally combined. “We are very happy with the updates figures in this report and with the help of our tenants, who have made significant infrastructure and other investments, and the public, the port will continue to grow. It has proven to be an excellent job creator for the region as well as the nation and we hope this report helps to show the nation the importance of Port Fourchon to not only the region but the entire nation as well, said Greater Lafourche Port Commission President Perry Gisclair. In his presentation to commission members at the board’s November monthly meeting, he stressed that all the numbers in the report should be considered conservative because not all port tenants responded to information requests. “We’re happy to see that the economic prowess of the port continues to grow and provide jobs to people in our region and state, said Commission Executive Director Chett Chiasson. “We believe this
just solidifies the belief that Port Fourchon has a bright future. The full study can be seen online at www.portfourchon.com.

Of the university’s 12 athletics programs, six teams earned top-ranking GSRs among Louisiana’s Southland Conference schools, including football, softball, women’s track, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball. Nicholls teams showing academic improvements over the past year include football, men’s tennis, soccer and volleyball. I take this on as a deep, heavy burden and I take it personally, he added. Our parish is long, and our needs can vary, that’s why Sgt. Terry has divided the parish into three sections. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will be assisting in the Thibodaux area with collections and hand outs, 4U a community service non-profit organization based in Lockport, will handle the central part of the parish and Gunnery Sergeant Terry will take care of the southern part. There are numerous drop-off points located throughout the parish. There are 13 just in the South Lafourche area alone. Aside from the designated drop sites, Toy For Tots conducts several toy drives throughout the community to help increase the number of new, unwrapped toys the group receives. There will be a Toys For Tots toy drive on December 6th in Lockport at 222 Canal Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event will be a toy drop off and pick up point serving those residents that live north of the Intracoastal to the end of Raceland. There is a second toy drive scheduled for December 13th in Galliano at the Walmart parking lot on Hwy. 3235. This one is only a drop-off event. Toys collected at this event will go to needy children from south of the Intracoastal to Leeville. Both events feature a visit from Santa as well as music, snacks and drinks. To learn more about Tots For Toys, for a complete list of drop off sites, ways you can help or to make a monetary donation, visit toysfortots.org or call Gunnery Sgt. Greg Terry at (985) 772- 4064.

when I sat down and signed off on it (on Oct. 29), I knew we were really there this time. District 7 Councilman Phillip Gouaux shares the same sentiments as Randolph, saying he will be elated once construction begins. “I am thrilled, Gouaux said about the Industrial Floodwall and Drainage Project. “I have people who ask me about the project all the time and to know this is finally going to happen is great news for everyone. Along with shoring up storm defenses for North American Shipyard, the project will serve to protect a total of 375 homes and 14 businesses besides North American from routine flooding that result from heavy rain. “For many years we have fought side-by-side with the parish to provide protection from flooding and tidal surge for not only our shipyard on the Intracoastal Waterway, but the many residents who live near our yard on Industrial Park Road, Edison Chouest President and CEO Gary Chouest said. “Honestly, while I am elated to see this project get underway, I am even more happy for the actual residents of our community and what this increased protection will mean for them and their families. I was always amazed by the efforts of the residents who assisted in constructing those makeshift levees in advance of all the approaching storms we’ve had over the years. Along with the immediate area, the project is also crucial to those living north of us, Chouest added. Picciola said updates to the nearby T -Bois Pump Station and drainage out fall canal improvements will provide protection from at least a 25-year rain event, while the floodwall enhancements will protect the area from a 100-year flood that comes from tidal surges from approaching storms.

having insurance rises in 2015. The Affordable Care Act requires individuals to have minimum essential health insurance coverage or face a financial penalty. Individuals who do not have health insurance in 2015 may be subjected to a penalty fee of two percent of their yearly household income or $325, whichever is higher. If you didn’t have coverage in 2014, you will also have to pay a penalty fee of one percent of your yearly household income or $95, whichever is higher. This is collectable when you file your 2014 federal income tax return. Employers with greater than 50 employees are mandated to offer health insurance to employees or pay a penalty. In addition to the individual Marketplace, the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) was created for small businesses to purchase health insurance for their employees. The SHOP Marktplace will be available to employers with 50 or fewer fulltime equivalent employees. SHOP is optional and if employers plan to use SHOP, they must offer coverage to all full-time employees – generally those working 30 or more hours per week on average. Small businesses that enroll in SHOP coverage may qualify for a tax credit. Rates for individual and small group health insurance plans being offered in 2015 are the first ones reviewed by actuaries with the Louisiana Department of Insurance to make sure they are in compliance with state and federal laws. More than five miles of construction is currently underway for the last two segments. The segment from MLK Blvd. to La. 1 began in April 2013 and will be completed in 2015. In addition, the segment from I-220 to MLK Blvd. is estimated to be completed by late 2016 or early 2017. Sherri H. LeBas, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said, “The opening of these ten miles of interstate through North Louisiana that connects with Arkansas marks a milestone in the development of the I-49 corridor. This new infrastructure will provide a new gateway to Louisiana via Arkansas, making it more accessible to the rest of the country and promoting economic growth. To date, the Jindal Administration has invested a total of $375 million to this critical corridor – more than half of the total project cost of $670 million. Additionally, the Jindal administration has committed more than $6.6 billion to transportation and infrastructure projects throughout Louisiana since 2008.

same time, absolutely necessary – and this time of year we want to remind folks that they can call us for help understanding their options. Provisions that were introduced last year such as guaranteed issue for everyone regardless of their health condition, no lifetime limits on essential benefits and subsidies for those who qualify remain in effect in 2015. Individuals can enroll in health coverage through the online Health Insurance Marketplace, or directly through a health insurance issuer, but subsidies are only available to those who qualify and enroll online through the Marketplace. Here are three other things Commissioner Donelon advises consumers to be aware of before enrolling in a health insurance plan. (1) The plan with the lowest premium may not be the least expensive. Many individuals may choose to go with plans that have the lowest monthly costs, but those plans also may have higher co-pays and deductibles, which is money you pay out of pocket. A knowledgeable health insurance agent can help you determine what plan best suits your needs and budget. (2) Check your network. Every health insurance plan has its own network of doctors, hospitals and service providers who have signed agreements with the insurance company to provide services at a specific price. Review your plan to see if your doctor and hospital are in your network. If they are not, insurance may not cover the bill and you will be required to pay the bill. (3) The penalty for not

Delinquent taxpayers have only days remaining to settle debt
BATON ROUGE – Individuals and businesses who have fallen behind on their taxes have seven days remaining to take advantage of Louisiana Tax Amnesty 2014. “With only days left to apply, we are reminding noncompliant taxpayers to take advantage of tax amnesty,” Secretary of Revenue Tim Barfield said. “We encourage anyone who has fallen behind on their taxes to look into the amnesty program before the opportunity ends.” The 30-day tax amnesty program, which ends at 11:59 p.m. on November 14, 2014, gives delinquent taxpayers and non-filers the opportunity to bring their accounts up to date. The Louisiana Department of Revenue will waive all applicable penalties, along with 50 percent of accrued interest, when taxpayers pay 100 percent of their tax balance. Taxpayers can apply for amnesty online at www.ldrtaxamnesty.com. An application can be completed in approximately five minutes. The 2014 tax amnesty program also offers the opportunity for eligible taxpay-
ers to pay their overdue taxes in installments over a six-month period. Installment agreements require a down payment of at least 20 percent of the amount owed, with final payment due no later than May 1, 2015. ___

The ships will be docked at the Downtown Marina on Park Avenue, across from the Terrebonne General Medical Center, until their departure early Monday morning December 8th. The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The ‘Pinta’ was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $8.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, and $6.00 for students 516. Children 4 and under are free. The ships are open every day from 9 a.m. to 5

Woman accused of throwing child across room
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Shreveport police have arrested a 25-year-old woman for allegedly throwing her 17-month-old child across the room while drunk. Cpl. Breck Scott says Gabrielle Kirkendoll was arrested early Monday on a charge of cruelty to a juvenile. Scott says hospital staff found that the child wasn’t injured from being thrown but found that the child was neglected because of hygiene, hunger and a “saturated diaper which had not been changed in hours.” Child Protective Services took custody of the child after the baby was released from the hospital. ___
Five dead in New Orleans house fire
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Two adults and 3 children died early Tuesday in a house fire, New Orleans firefighters said. Fire Chief Timothy McConnell told local news outlets the fire was reported around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday and first units on the scene found the two-story, wood framed house engulfed in flames. McConnell said a woman, her three grandchildren and the mother of the children were killed. He said the children’s father escaped uninjured. McConnell said the grandmother’s body was found in a first floor bed-
room and the mother and children were found in a second floor bedroom. McConnell said the father, who was the mother’s boyfriend, attempted to rescue his family, but could not re-enter the burning home. He said the father told him the home had no working smoke detectors. McConnell said the three children attended Andrew H. Wilson Charter School across the street from their home. Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation. ___
Three dead in fiery crash Monday in Terrebonne Parish
SCHRIEVER, La. (AP) — State police are investigating a two vehicle crash that killed three people on La. Highway 24 in Terrebonne Parish. Trooper Evan Harrell says a pickup driven by 19year-old Jordan Mayon, of Houma, failed to negotiate the curve, crossed a small median and hit another pickup driven by 30-yearold by Kendric Prince of Patterson. After impact Monday night, Harrell says both vehicles caught fire. He says Mayon, Prince, and a passenger in Prince’s vehicle, 54-year-old Shannon Tassin of Reserve were unable to escape the vehicles and were pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office.

Act 718 gave the Louisiana Department of Insurance the authority to review the actuarial assumptions and methods used by a health insurance issuer in establishing a plan rate but the Department does not have authority to approve or disapprove the rate. “We estimate that our actual review of health insurance plan rates this year saved consumers more than $4 million,” added Donelon. “I’m pleased with the added consumer protection that our health rate review has provided, but I
firmly maintain that authority to actually approve or disapprove health plan rates would provide greater safeguards for policyholders.” Starting November 15, health rate and form filings will be available via a new online system called SERFF Filing Access (SFA). To view health insurance rate summaries and access health rate filings, please go to www.ldi.la.gov/healthrates. For additional information, you can download the LDI publication A Consumer’s Guide to Health Insurance on the Department website www.ldi.la.gov. or call the Department of Insurance at 1-800-259-5300.

Tarpons and Trojans both fall, SLHS still makes playoffs Casey Gisclair Contributing Writer
For the third-straight year, the South Lafourche football team is going to the Class 5A State Playoffs. The Tarpons lost Friday night’s game with Hahnville, falling to the Tigers by a 4213 margin. But thanks to the strength of the Bayou District and a powerful nondistrict slate that featured quality opponents like Landry Walker and Shaw, the Tarpons were fortunate enough to accumulate enough power points throughout the season to be in the Top 32 in Class 5A. South Lafourche received the No. 31-seed in the playoff bracket – that’s the good news. The bad news is that the Tarpons will open their 2014 Playoff journey as a decisive underdog against No. 2 Ponchatoula – a 10-0 foe that has steamrolled all of its oppo-
nents all season, firmly establishing itself as one of the favorites to go to the Superdome. Kick-off for Friday night’s game will be at 7 p.m. The game will be played at the Green Wave’s campus, located at 19452 La. Highway 22 in Ponchatoula. “We want another week, South Lafourche head football coach Dennis Skains said. “We wanted another game to prepare for with these kids – another week to work on things and get better. We know that we’re a big underdog, but we’ve been an underdog all season. Our kids never shy away from that role. We’re going to work hard and try and put together our best game. Against Hahnville on Friday night, South Lafourche was seemingly doomed for the start when junior quarterback Harvey

Allen and junior halfback/defensive end Jacob Jackson were ruled out for the game – each with ankle injuries. Without Allen, the Tarpons played a multi-quarterback system that focused heavily on the running game and controlling the clock. It worked early in the game, as South Lafourche took six minutes off the clock on its second drive of the game, pushing the ball deep into Hahnville territory. But a fumble turned the ball over to Hahnville with two and a half minutes left in the first quarter and the game still in a scoreless tie. And the rest of the game belonged to the Tigers. After receiving the turnover, Hahnville’s offense drew first blood when quarterback Austin Perrin found receiver Ricky Pre-
ston on a 65-yard bomb to put the Tigers up 7-0 late in the opening quarter. The Tigers scored again early in the second quarter, going on top 14-0 after a short touchdown run by Drew Dunn. After a couple of punts, Hahnville ended the first half with a bang when Perrin hit Brandon Singleton on a bomb to put the Tigers up 21-0 at halftime. For the second-straight week, the Tarpons’ secondary was an Achilles Heel. South Lafourche held Hahnville’s option-based offense to fewer than 100 yards. But in long-yardage situations, Perrin was always able to pick out open receivers for big yardage. “That’s killed us all year, Skains said. “I know it doesn’t look like we work on that, but we do every, single day at practice. If we’re able to get one more game to play, we’ll work on it again and try and be bet-

Hahnville started the second half with a dagger, returning the opening kickoff of the half 65 yards for a touchdown to go up 28-0. Backup quarterback Mike Neal threw and ran for touchdowns to close the third quarter with the Tigers ahead 42-0. In the fourth quarter, South Lafourche showed some perseverance, fighting forward for two touchdowns to bring the game to its final margin. The first came on a seven-yard scamper from senior Audie Pitre, the second when young quarterback Jaydon Cheramie hit Tony Bailey for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Skains said he was pleased to see his seniors get touchdowns on Senior Night – an emotional time for the coach and the players. “All of those kids mean so much to me, said. “Coaches always hate Senior Night because it takes you out of your routine, but as you watch those young men walk toward you, you’re flooded with memories. I love this group, and they all mean so much to me. Trojans fall to Thibodaux, eliminated from contention
While South Lafourche survived week 10 with another game to prepare for, the Central Lafourche Trojans weren’t quite as fortunate. The Trojans were hammered 54-14 by Thibodaux on Friday night, ending the team’s regular season with a 4-6 record. But because of the team’s subpar non-district slate, Central Lafourche wasn’t able to earn enough power points to get into the Class 5A playoffs – ending the team’s season. No. 20 LSU wants history to repeat itself 10-A
Wednesday, November 12, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
BRYAN LAZARE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — For the rest of this season, the 20th-ranked LSU Tigers wouldn’t mind seeing history repeat itself. Unhappy as the Tigers are about losing each of their last three regular season meetings with Alabama, they’ve managed to respond well to their previous two defeats in the series. LSU strung together three-game winning streaks after the 2012 and 2013 setbacks, and now aims to do the same to secure a fifth-straight double-digit victory total. “We need an immediate bounce back,” senior center Elliott Porter said Monday. “We have our 48-hour rule. We have to get over it. It is my job as a senior to make sure the young guys get over things and get ready for the next one. It is a tough pill to swallow, but you have to swallow it.” The Tigers (7-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) have little time to get over the heartbreaking defeat against Alabama. LSU will travel to play Saturday at Arkansas (4-5, 0-5), which is seeking to end a 17-game SEC losing streak. Coach Les Miles said Monday he has no concern about his players’ mindset. “There’s a deep breath in every one of us,” Miles said. “It’s that anxiety and that ugly feeling you get in your stomach when things don’t go exactly right. That’s
the emotion you’ll find in our players. ... We’re going to ache. We recognize, ‘coulda, woulda, shoulda.’ We recognize where we are. “That’s going to be difficult to handle. But, they will go to the field and practice. They will get a little bit of sweat going. They will do the things they’re supposed to do. At the back end of practice, they will feel a little bit better,” Miles added. “By Tuesday, they will be all focused on Arkansas.” On Monday morning, however, Miles was still revisiting the Alabama loss in a telephone conversation with SEC Coordinator of Football Officials Steve Shaw. Following the game, Miles appeared to be upset about an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against guard Vadal Alexander late in the game. With the score tied at 10, the penalty pushed the Tigers back from the Alabama 6 to the 21. Soon after, LSU had to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Colby Delahoussaye to take just a three-point advantage with 50 seconds to play. Miles sounded mostly satisfied with his exchange with Shaw, saying he “did a great job explaining to me the mechanics and how they looked at things.” “I appreciate very much the candidness with which he described each call,” Miles said, referring to what may have instigated Alexander’s penalized shove. “I’m very comfortable with how he saw it. What has to hap-

pen in making those calls is the official must see the whole play. He can’t make a partial call. It’s got to be the whole play. Upon review ... I think that call could have been made in a different way.” Now, LSU must turn its attention to Arkansas. The Tigers have won four of the last five games against the Razorbacks. However, three of the LSU victories came by a margin of seven points or less. “This football team is made up of quality people and guys with character,” Miles said. “They will be fighters. We will try to improve as a team like always. We want to play ourselves into a (bowl) game of significance. That very next game of significance will be Arkansas in its stadium.”

“I’m proud of our kids,” Menard said. “We fought all year long. In the end, we came up short, but we’re going to keep pushing and keep fighting forward. We like what we have coming back and we’ll keep working to get better. It hurts for our seniors, though. Those kids cared about one another. We wanted to get to the playoffs for them.” For the Trojans, Friday night’s game was must-win. But Thibodaux had a little something to say about that. The Tigers dominated the first half of Friday night’s game, roaring to a 28-0 lead at halftime. Halfback Jayquan Chenier and quarterback Peyton Bonvillain combined for almost 300 of the Tigers’ 429 rushing yards in the win, gashing the Trojans throughout the night. The Tigers’ running game was stymied one week earlier against South Lafourche – something that kept Thibodaux hungry in week 10. “We got back to our bread and butter – running the football,” Tigers coach Chris Dugas said. “We did a nice job keeping them off balance and keeping the chains moving.” In the second half, the Tigers ballooned their lead to 41-0 before the Trojans got on the board when quarterback Austin Aucoin hit Da’Quan Gray on a short touchdown strike to make the score 41-7. After two more Thibodaux scores, Central Lafourche halfback Thomas Wesley scored the final touchdown of the night, bringing the game to its final 54-14 margin.

As losses pile up, Saints’ playoff goals endure BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — New Orleans Saints cornerback Corey White still likes his team’s chances to emerge as a legitimate playoff contender — not just a team lucky to have a shot because it plays in a weak division. “We’re not your ordinary 4-5 team, White said Monday as the Saints gathered to review their 27-24 overtime loss to San Francisco a day earlier. “We could easily be 7-2 right now. Or 8-1, by White’s logic. The Saints have lost four games by a field goal or less after having the led in the last two minutes of all those games. Two losses came in overtime after the Saints turned over the ball deep enough in their territory to set up deciding field goals by Atlanta in Week 1 and San Francisco on Sunday. “We’re going to find a way to win close games like that, White asserted. “And when we do that, we’re going to be better — way better. The good news for the Saints is that they emerged from their latest loss still in control of their playoff fate. The entire NFC South has struggled and New Orleans still has a home game against Carolina, its main divisional competition. “There’s still a belief in this locker room that we’ve got a lot to play for, right tackle Zach Strief said. “We’re going to have bigger games come up. But it’s a mad scramble every week at this point. The Saints were done in by turnovers in Sunday’s loss, which overshadowed promising performances on

both sides of the ball. After yielding 14 points in the first quarter, New Orleans’ defense allowed only 10 more during the final three quarters of regulation. It didn’t allow any second-half points until the Niners’ tying field goal with 44 seconds left in regulation. New Orleans also had four sacks of Colin Kaepernick, forcing a fumble on one. On offense, Mark Ingram got his third straight 100-yard game. “I love the way he is playing. He is playing hard, coach Sean Payton said. “He is physical. He has been durable. The Saints rushed for 136 yards, about 45 more than the Niners’ secondranked defense was allowing coming in. Drew Brees passed for 292 yards and three touchdowns to remain among the league’s leading passers. Tight end Jimmy Graham showed little ill effect from his Week 5 shoulder injury, making 10 catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns. He also outmuscled and out-jumped the 49ers secondary for a Hail Mary heave at the end of regulation, but was called for offensive pass interference. Graham has denied he pushed off, but even some of his teammates thought officials made the right call — regardless of whether defensive back Perrish Cox tried to sell it by throwing his arms out as he went down. “It was clearly pass interference, White said, jokingly calling Graham “crazy for saying otherwise. “As much as I like to defend my own teammates, I don’t want to lie, either. More troublesome to White and fellow defensive players was Kaepernick’s 51-yard completion on fourth-and-10 to set up the tying field goal. Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro regretted allowing a completion over his head, but said he was concerned Kaepernick would throw to tight end Vernon Davis, who was breaking open for a potential first-down catch. He didn’t consider that Kaepernick would be able to complete a pass so far across the field, saying a quarterback had never done that to him before. Disappointing as that play was, the New Orleans secondary was pleased to see top cornerback Keenan Lewis return to the game from what initially looked like a serious injury to his left leg. The leg had signifi-

cant, visible swelling around the knee after the game. On Monday, Lewis walked into the locker room through the training room door and virtually guaranteed he’d be ready to play against Cincinnati next Sunday. “I’ll be ready. I’m just getting ready for the Bengals, Lewis said without being specific about the nature of his injury. “You don’t want to run out there and try to make it worse if it had been a (major) injury, but I felt it was nowhere near that standard. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

Sheriff’s office urges citizens to create Smart911 safety profile 14-A
Wednesday, November 12, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre is reminding citizens about a free, enhanced emergency service, which can assist first responders during an emergency. The Smart911 system allows citizens to create a safety profile for their household, which can include any information they may want 9-1-1 call-takers and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen with a safety profile dials 9-1-1, their information is automatically loaded onto the 91-1 call-taker’s screen, providing valuable informa-
tion, which could save lives. “Every second counts when we respond to an emergency,” said Sheriff Webre. “By giving deputies more information prior to arriving on scene, the chances of survival in a lifethreatening situation increase. I encourage each and every citizen to create a safety profile which will help us and other first responders assist you and your family in the event of an emergency.” The Lafourche Parish Communications District announced the launch of the Smart911 system in November 2013. Since that

Blind Date
Danny sets up Andy to go on a blind date with Shirley, a friend of his. But Andy is a little worried about going out with someone he has never seen before. “What do I do if she’s ugly?” says Andy, “I’ll be stuck with her all night.” “Don’t worry.” Danny says. “Just go up to her
door and meet her first. If you like what you see then everything goes as planned. If you don’t, just shout Aaauuuggghhh! And fake an asthma attack.” So that night, Andy knocks at Shirley’s door, and when she comes out he is awe-struck at how beautiful and sexy she is. Andy’s about to speak when the girl suddenly shouts, “Aaauuuggghhh!”

time, anyone with a Smart911 safety profile who dials 9-1-1 in Lafourche Parish will have the information they provide made available to the call-taker and first responders. Those who include their cell phone number as part of their Safety Profile can utilize the service nationwide wherever Smart911 is available. “If you happen to be in Terrebonne Parish, and have to dial 9-1-1, your information will be available there as well,” said Sheriff Webre. “Even when you travel out of state to places like Atlanta, Georgia, or Washington, D.C., your information travels with you, and it cannot be accessed unless and until you actually dial 9-1-1. This can be a valuable tool when traveling, whether going on vacation or evacuating for a hurricane.” Sheriff Webre said this aspect of the service will be especially useful if responding to an emergency of someone visiting Lafourche from another state. “As long as they have a safety profile, their information will be available to us,” said Sheriff Webre.
