Port Commission recognizes NSU for Fourchon Beach restoration efforts
The Greater Lafourche Port Commission recognized Nicholls State University for its fundamental contributions to Fourchon Beach coastal restoration and protection efforts at a commission board meeting Thursday in Galliano. Nicholls biology faculty and students have grown and planted over 16,500 dune grass stems to help protect Fourchon Beach from environmental factors like storm surges and coastal erosion since July 2014. Volunteers returned to the beach Friday, Nov. 13 for additional planting. The recipient of the 2015 American Association of Port Authorities Environmental Enhancement Award, the ongoing Fourchon Beach restoration project is a collaboration among the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, Nicholls, Shell Oil Co. and the Wisner Foundation. The project rebuilt over 5,300 liner feet of beach and dune habitat along Fourchon Beach, which provides essential storm surge protection to Port Fourchon. See Port Page 3-A

La. Guardsman named All-Army Boxing champion Houma native wins gold in 141-pound light welterweight class By Spcs. Joshua Barnett and Garrett L. Dipuma Louisiana National Guard
NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana National Guard Spc. Trey “The Truth” Alexander, of Houma, won the 141pound light welterweight class at the All-Army Boxing Championships at Fort Huachuca, Arizona in September. Alexander’s win earned him a coveted spot on the All-Army Boxing Team. Alexander, a member of Headquarters and
Headquarters Detachment, 139th Regional Support Group, was the only National Guardsman in the country to compete at the prestigious tournament and was one of approximately 30 Soldiers from across the Army to be invited. “Spc. Alexander has always been a model soldier. Now he has the opportunity to display that not only to the 139th family, but quite possibly the entire world as he progresses with the All- Army Boxing Team,” said Capt. Kerry G. Lewis, HHD, 139th RSG commander. See Boxer Page 5-A

If you are a Medicare recipient, or will become one in 2016, you need to be aware of the enrollment periods for joining, switching, or leaving Medicare. To some 65-years of age or older, and certain younger people with disabilities, understanding and making choices within the Medicare plan is a necessary but daunting and dreaded task, nonetheless required for participation in the government insurance plan. Medicare parts “C” and “D” offer two open enrollments periods, one which began on October 15 and runs until December 7. During this first period, you may enroll, switch and/or drop coverage plans as you wish. Part “C” covers Medicare Advantage Plans, which are simply Medicare plans offered by private insurance companies. Part “D” enrollment involves the choice of Medicare coverage for prescription drugs. During the second enrollment period, January 1 through February 14, participants can enroll but are limited in their choices. During the second period, switching is not permitted, unless you are switching from an Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare. See SHIIP Page 5-A

Construction began last week on a $5 million floodwall along the Intracoastal Waterway in Larose that will help protect several hundred homes and businesses from Larose to Lockport. The new 8-foot seawall stretching about 2,650 feet along Industrial Park Boulevard will help protect homes and businesses, including North American Shipbuilding, from flooding. The project also involves raising about 1,000 feet of road to a 7-foot elevation and should take about eight months to complete, according to Sandy Guidry, a project engineer with the Angelette-Picciola design firm that is working on the project.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — You can’t buy hearts, kidneys or other organs but money can still help you get one. Wealthy people are more likely to get on multiple waiting lists and score a transplant, and less likely to die while waiting for one, a new study finds. The work confirms what many have long suspected — the rich have advantages even in a system designed to steer organs to the sickest patients and those who have waited longest. Wealthier people can better afford the tests and travel to get on more than one transplant center’s waiting list, and the new study shows how much this pays off. “Multiple-listed patients were more likely to get transplanted and less likely to die,” said Dr. Raymond Givens at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. “It’s a rational thing to do” from an individual patient’s point of view, but it raises fairness questions, and the policy should be reconsidered, he said. He led the study and gave results recently at an American Heart Association conference in Orlando. See Wealthy Page 5-A

Jersey auction raises $101,000 for South Carolina flood victims
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A package of football items that included the signed jersey of LSU running back Leonard Fournette has raised more than $100,000 for flood victims in South Carolina. The LSU athletic department said Monday the winning bid was $101,000. Along with the jersey Fournette wore in the Oct. 10 victory over South Carolina, the package included signed helmets by both coaches in the game, LSU’s Les Miles and South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier. Spurrier resigned two days later. The Tigers’ 45-24 win was moved from Columbia to Baton Rouge, Louisiana because of flooding that struck South Carolina and led to 19 deaths and untold damage to state structures and roadways. Fournette says he wanted to do what he could to help. The NCAA signed off on the charity auction. ___
LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — A World War II veteran in Louisiana turned 110 on Friday. KPLC-TV reported that Frank Levingston, one of seven children, was born in 1905 and grew up in northern Louisiana. He said he can remember the day he joined the Army and the day he was discharged. Levingston was an Army private and served during the war in the Naples-Foggia Campaign in Italy, which lasted from September 1943 to January 1944. He was discharged in 1945. Now living in the Louisiana city of Lake Charles, Levingston said he doesn’t go a day now without being thankful for his long life. Levingston said he had little formal education, but was taught important lessons by his parents he still holds on to and shares with those around him. “Be honest. That goes a long ways,” said Levingston. ___
Study: Even the normalweight should watch that apple shape
WASHINGTON (AP) — A pot belly can be a bad thing — even if you’re not considered overweight. New research suggests normal-weight people who carry their fat at their waistlines may be at higher risk of death over the years than overweight or obese people whose fat is more concentrated on the hips and thighs. Abdominal fat — an apple-shaped figure — has long been considered more worrisome than fat that settles on the hips and below, the so-called pear shape. Risk increases for men if their waist circumference is larger than 40 inches, and 35 inches for women. Still, doctors typically focus more on BMI than waistlines; after all, girth tends to increase as weight does. At every BMI level, people with thicker middles had a higher risk of death than those with trimmer waists, the researchers reported in Annals of Internal Medicine. In the study, 11 percent of men and 3 percent of women were normal weight but had an elevated waist-to-hip ratio. ___

“Having an environmentally conscious organization like the Greater Lafourche Port Commission collaborate with Nicholls students on service-learning opportunities encourages them to connect with their community and gain a firsthand understanding of the impact they can make as future biologists,” said Nicholls President Dr. Bruce Murphy. Fourchon Beach is the first line of defense for Port Fourchon, which services over 90 percent of all deepwater Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production, accounting for approximately 20 percent of the U.S. energy supply. This beach area sustained extensive damages from Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Isaac. “While it’s great to build this beach and dune back, we understood that the project wouldn’t be
able to last long in that environment without plants to help hold it together,” said Chett Chiasson, executive director of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission. “That’s when

we approached Nicholls about helping us protect this investment with a series of plantings, and we are very grateful that they have done so much to help us keep our beach intact.”

ONLY candidate for a two-term limit. Other candidate running for fourth term.

PAY RAISE FOR PARISH PRESIDENT
“Will you get an 80% pay raise this year? Not likely is my guess. Why should a politician get an 80% pay raise? When elected, I will refuse this pay raise and donate the money to worthy Lafourche charities.” -Jimmy Cantrelle
ONLY candidate who will end “silly” permits and OPPOSE any increase in permit fees. Other candidate supports permits and tried to dramatically increase permit fees.

“Silly permits are nothing more than another way for government to tax our citizens, hurt business and create more bureaucracy. It’s wrong!” -Jimmy Cantrelle

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Children’s stories can have a a profound influence on our lives as Christians
Some stories we learned as kids can have a profound influence on our adult behavior. Take the Aesop fable of the sun and the wind. “The wind and the sun argued one day over which one was the stronger. Spotting a man traveling on the road, they sported a challenge to see which one could remove the coat from the man’s back the quickest. “The wind began. He blew strong gusts of air, so strong that the man could barely walk against them.
But the man clutched his coat tightly against him. The wind blew harder and longer, and the harder the wind blew, the tighter the man held his coat against him. The wind blew until he was exhausted, but could not remove the coat from the man’s back. “It was now the sun’s turn. He gently sent his beams upon the traveler. The sun did very little, but quietly shone upon his head and back until the man became so warm that he took off his coat and headed for the nearest shade tree.” The moral of the story is that we can win over more people with the warmth of love than with force or violence. Indian activist Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Love is the strongest force the world possesses and yet it is the humblest imaginable.” Jesus urged us to make love the center of our lives because God is of love.

Fr. Richard Rohr tells us that the root of violence is the illusion of separation – from God, from being one with everyone and everything. Notice the one common factor that perpetrators of mass shootings have in common. They were all loners. They had little or no social contact with others. That is why having a relationship with God and other individuals is so important. We all need love in our lives. Another Aesop’s fable is the story of the lion and the mouse. “Once when a Lion was asleep, a little Mouse began running up and down upon him. This soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon the Mouse and opened his big jaws to swallow him. “‘Pardon, O King!’ cried the little Mouse, “Forgive me this time. I will never repeat it and I will never forget your kindness. Who knows, but I can probably do you a good turn one of these days?” The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him that he lifted up his paw and let him go. “Sometime later a few hunters captured the King and tied him to a tree while they went to get a wagon to carry him. Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight of the Lion, ran up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of Beasts. ‘Was I not right?’ said the little Mouse, very happy to help the Lion.” The moral of the story is: little friends may prove to be great friends. We all have something to give in life. If we only compare ourselves with others, we may be overwhelmed by their perceived intelligence or talents. We have to look at our own giftedness and not compare ourselves with others. God has given each of us unique gifts and talents. They might be difference from what we see in others. We have to use our gifts
whatever they may be for the good of others. St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians says,
“What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as if it were not a

SHIIP
From 1-A
Confused? Well, take heart. The state of Louisiana is offering a program called SHIIP, or Senior Health Insurance Information Program. The program is sponsored by State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon’s Department of Insurance and offers counselors who have the resources to answer any question you might have regarding Medicare choices which are right for you. SHIIP counselors offer free and confidential help and have no connection with any insurance company, nor do they promote any products. Through SHIIP, you may be able to take advantage of money-saving programs depending on your income and assets. Even if your personal income or assets are more than the eligible limits, you may still qualify for certain programs designed to reduce your payments. SHIIP is a completely free service which does not offer legal assistance, does not make your decisions for you, nor does it try to sell you anything. For more information on SHIIP, stop by the Lafourche Parish Council on Aging’s office at the Mathews Government Complex, or call COA at (985) 532-0457. The service is completely free by calling the state office at 800-2595300, or by visiting www.ldi.la.gov.

Spc. Trey Alexander, a Louisiana National Guardsman and amateur boxer, trains in Houma in preparation for the AllArmy Boxing Tournament on Aug. 13. Alexander, a food service specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 139th Regional Support Group, travelled to Fort Huachuca, Ariz., where he won his weight class and earned a spot on the All-Army Boxing Team. tion for everyone. Alexander joined the Guard right out of high school in 2011 as a food service specialist, looking for opportunity. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and I figured the National Guard would discipline me and keep me on track with my life, which it did, Alexander said. What he didn’t know at the time was that, in addition to providing direction in his personal life, the Guard would help advance his boxing career. “As a Guardsman, I have more opportunities. The All-Army Team, the Army World Class Athlete Program, those are roads straight to the Olympics, straight to all the big tournaments, Alexander said. “Civilians have to work two or three times harder to get those opportunities. They have to work harder, raise money, fight in more tournaments than I have to. “The Guard paid for me to go, paid me to be there, so I had a lot of room to breathe. All I had to focus on was boxing and training. Knowing I was getting

You can play basketball, you can play football, you can play tennis, but you can’t play boxing. It’s 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. Alexander is now training to qualify for the 2016 Olympic team tryouts. His coach at Pro Athletic Performance gym in Houma thinks he can make it. “This guy right here has the potential to become the world champ, said Lloyd Stewart. “He’s one of the hardest working guys I’ve got in the gym. He’s a leader, and I’m very impressed with him. He has world champion ability. That’s very, very rare. The 139th Regional Support Group is headquartered at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans.

More than 122,000 Americans are wait-listed for an organ, including more than 100,000 who need kidneys. As of July, only 18,000 transplants have been done this year. The United Network for Organ Sharing, or UNOS, the agency that runs the nation’s transplant system under a government contract, assigns organs based on a formula that considers medical urgency, tissue type, distance from the donor, time spent on the waiting list and other factors. UNOS has considered banning or limiting multiple listings three times, most recently in 2003, said spokesman Joel Newman. But some people think patients should be free to go wherever they want to improve their odds, and UNOS now requires that transplant centers tell them about this option. “It takes money and knowledge ... traveling can make a huge difference in how quickly you get an organ, said Robert Veatch, a medical ethicist at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University and a longtime member of the UNOS ethics committee who thinks the policy should be changed. “Steve Jobs is the classic example, he said. The former Apple chief was on a transplant list in Tennessee and received a new liver at a hospital there in 2009 even though he lived

in California. It’s not known if he was on more than one waiting list, however. Patients on multiple lists often must pay for a new set of tests, which can range from $23,000 for a kidney to $51,000 for a heart, one study estimated, plus be able to get local housing or travel on short notice if an organ becomes available. An Internet database— the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients — gives average wait times, success rates and other details on every transplant program in the nation. Many people from New York, where organs are scarce, seek a second listing in California, where organs are more plentiful. Steven Taibbi, 62, who lives in Huntington on New York’s Long Island, is on a wait list for a heart at Columbia, but is seeking a second listing in Los Angeles. Taibbi, who once helped head an international charity for organ donation, said: “I’m decimating my retirement account to do this. I’m not a rich guy. It can pay off, though. Givens and colleagues studied UNOS records from 2000 to 2013 and found that multiple-listed patients had higher transplant rates, lower death rates while waiting, were wealthier and were more likely to have private insurance. Highlights: — Multiple listing occurred among 2 percent of those seeking a heart, 6 percent seeking a liver and 12 percent seeking a kidney. — Death rates while waiting for an organ were higher among those on a single list versus multiple ones: 12 percent versus 8 percent for those seeking a heart; 17 percent versus 12 percent for a liver, and 19

percent versus 11 percent for a kidney. — Compared to people on just one list, multiple listers were younger (52 versus 54), more likely to have private insurance (59 percent versus 51 percent) and less likely to be covered by Medicaid (6 percent versus 10 percent). — Median incomes were higher in zip codes where multiple listers lived: $93,081 versus $67,690 for people on just one list. — Kidneys are the greatest need: one person is listed at eight transplant centers, two people are listed at seven, four are listed at six, and 18 are on five lists. Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it, then in your own merciful eyes. It will become your favor not mine. Amen Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail. G.O. & J.H. _________________________

Raceland man charged with second degree murder following Tuesday incident 8-A
Sunday, November 15, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office announced that Danny Breaux, 38, of Raceland will be charged with second degree murder in the death of Cuong Tran, 39, of Thibodaux following an altercation Tuesday. Breaux was arrested Tuesday night and is currently in custody in Jefferson Parish. At around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, deputies responded to a call of an unknown male subject lying on the side of Eauclair Drive in Thibodaux. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the man, later identified as Tran, to be breathing but unresponsive with severe trauma to his head. He was transported by ambulance to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was flown via helicopter to University Hospital in New Orleans. Investigators learned Tran was at his residence with another man, Danny Breaux, when the two arranged for Breaux to purchase a dog from Tran. Breaux later left the residence with the dog without paying for it, and Tran contacted Breaux by telephone about the dog. Breaux returned to Tran’s street, called Tran to the street, and a verbal altercation ensued. At one point, Breaux allegedly punched Tran in the face, and Tran collapsed, striking his head on the roadway. Breaux allegedly
Danny Breaux
continued to strike Tran in the face while Tran was lying motionless in the roadway. Breaux fled the scene following the incident. Deputies made contact with him by telephone, but Breaux refused to meet with deputies. Following the investigation, a warrant for Breaux’s arrest was obtained for the charge of attempted second degree murder. Then, late Tuesday night, Breaux was taken into custody by the Westwego Police Department in Jefferson Parish. At 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, Cuong Tran succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
