Happy Holidays … Tax notices going out this week
Marc C. Kimball Contributing Writer
Thanksgiving … it’s a lot of work. There’s usually enough food at any Cajun’s house to feed an army! Some people start preparing the Thursday feast at least a day or two in advance, which means trips to the grocery to get that ever important facet, that Thanksgiving staple, the turkey! What, just what, if the turkey came to you? That’s exactly what happened to Roland and LouAnna Guidry over the last few weeks at their home in Cut Off. “I mean, I like turkey, but already cooked!” says LouAnna of her holiday guest that doesn’t seem to want to leave. “If that turkey comes calling here every morning knocking on the door…,” she adds in a huff. A few weeks ago, a large turkey showed up on Roland and LouAnna’s back porch and seems to enjoy his temporary home away from home. The turkey has been back nearly every morning since. The Guidrys live in Cut Off, literally next to the original canal that gave the city its name.
The Lafourche Gazette office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28, for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Keep the Grinch away! Sheriff’s Office offers holiday shopping safety tips
As the holiday season approaches, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering safety tips for consumers to protect themselves while shopping at stores and online. “Many people are now beginning their Christmas shopping before the turkey has left the Thanksgiving table,” said Sheriff Craig Webre. “Unfortunately, with so many of us flocking to malls, shopping centers, and online stores, thieves and scammers see this is a golden opportunity to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers.” The Friday after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, is often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, which runs through Christmas Eve. During this time period, retail outlets traditionally offer significant sales and deals luring multitudes of consumers to their stores and websites. The large crowds at physical sites and people seeking the best deals online attract criminals as well. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division will be conducting extra patrols in and around shopping centers and retail outlets throughout the parish during the busy holiday shopping season, but there are many ways consumers can protect themselves from becoming a victim. Sheriff Webre offers these tips: See Holiday Page 6-A
Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will be sending out 50,658 tax notices through the mail this week to Lafourche Parish property owners. Of that number, 12,342 are homestead exempt and owe no taxes. A total of $123,775,642.96 in property taxes are now due and can be paid online, in person, or by mail. These taxes help fund all aspects of public service in the parish such as roads, drainage, levees, law enforcement, fire departments, hospitals, ambulance services, schools, and recreation. Payments are can be made in full online at LPSO.net/PayMyTaxes, or mailed to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office at P.O. Box 5608, Thibodaux, LA 70302. Full payments via cash, credit, debit, check, or money order can also be made at the LPSO Administrative Office, (200 Canal Boulevard, Thibodaux), and at the South Lafourche Sub-station, (102 West 91st Street, Galliano). A surcharge will apply for all card and online payments. For added convenience, the following banks will accept tax payments at their Lafourche Parish branches: Coastal Commerce Bank, Community Bank, First American Bank, Regions Bank, South Lafourche Bank, State Bank & Trust, and Whitney Bank. Turkey From 1-A
To their left, is Kirk St. Pierre, who has received the turkey once or twice, and to the right is Ken’s Body Shop, where the turkey also visited on two separate occasions. “That turkey just comes up to the back door and stares inside,” says LouAnna. “It seems like each morning he’s waiting for me. He spends about three to four hours at the back door each morning just sitting there.” “He leaves us little cadeaux on the back porch,” says husband Roland. “I had to pick up the welcome mat and give it a thorough cleaning. I think the turkey was feeling a little too welcome!” The bird had previously spent a few days turkeygazing and preening itself in the mirrored doors at Ken’s Body Shop. “Evidently he must see himself in the door. We had a mess to clean out front on Monday,” says Kenny Chouest. “It’s a young turkey and the timing is perfect … I mean he’s here just before Thanksgiving,” Chouest said with a sly smile. The day the turkey arrived on the Guidry’s doorstep, it was a visiting physical therapist who first spotted the fowl visitor. “I am recuperating from knee surgery, and the physical therapist was here on a Saturday when the turkey first appeared,” says LouAnna. “It wouldn’t let the therapist leave out the back door, so I called animal control. They asked if this was an emergency, and I told them ‘no’, but ‘this was no joke either’,” she says emphatically. “It’s nearly Thanksgiving and I call reporting a turkey on my doorstep … they must have thought I was pulling their leg.” Animal control showed up and tried to catch the premature Thanksgiving main dish. The officers tried to catch the bird, but it flew away after it was cornered. They soon left, but Roland was on the case. At the corner of the house, Roland had his cast net. His plan was to try and trap it in the morning when it came acalling yet again. Unfortunately, circumstances did not allow Roland’s planned backyard turkey hunt to come to fruition, and so each morning Roland and LouAnna were awakened by the sound of gobbling at the back door. “The turkey comes in the morning and clucks and gobbles,” says LouAnna. “He goes around the house clucking all morning.” “It might be a female,” Roland says, correcting his wife’s self-proclaimed sex of the bird. “I didn’t see a beard.” “No. It’s not a female,” rebuts LouAnna. They spend some time discussing beards and sexes of turkeys. It’s fascinating, but not as interesting as imagining Roland chasing the turkey around the house with a cast net. Apparently the turkey is unaware of the calendar and the significance we place on the fourth Thursday in November. That turkey, male or female, is unaware that in a few days, it could be the centerpiece at someone’s feast! The feathered fowl is so comfortable at the Guidry home, that it roosts each night on the pergola which sits right outside the kitchen

window. A pergola is like a gazebo, but features open cross beams for a roof, creating a shaded area below. “Yup,” says Roland. “The turkey leaves us little treats under the pergola too. Every day around dusk, the turkey flies up to the top of the pergola and roosts,” he says. “I stand at the kitchen sink and watch it get comfortable and make itself at home up there.” Fast forward to a few days ago. A nearby neighbor, Becky, has chickens and roosters, and thought the turkey would make an
excellent addition to her flock. “She showed up at dusk with her ladder, a flashlight and a net,” says Roland. “Just as she got up to the top of the pergola, the turkey became aware of what was happening.” Becky grabbed at the turkey’s tail in an attempt to stop it from fleeing, but to no avail. “That turkey took off east, north-east with a baldheaded behind,” laughs Roland. “The bird left and left Becky with a fistful of tail feathers. Bald head and
bald bum.” Maybe the turkey checked the calendar and realized its time was up. Perhaps it was Roland with his cast net or even Becky with her “hands-on” approach that did it. Either way, the turkey has flown the coup. “It hasn’t been seen the last few days,” says Roland. Be on the lookout for a turkey in your neck of the woods this Thanksgiving holiday. It would make a delight-fowl addition to your dinner table … and as a bonus, Becky has already started the plucking for you!

“In a Small Pond By Leroy Martin
“IT’S A SMALL WORLD, AFTER ALL
Griffin, Olucien Cheramie and Paul Callais, Sr., my great-great grandfather. Small world! Earlier, some damn Yankee, (Mrs. Rome, who was a cultured lady wrote Yankee, but to me, that’s only half a word), had bought land from the Cheramies and built a big ditch, known as the “Yankee Canal in Golden Meadow. It’s still called “Canalle Yankee by the Cajuns. They brought pumps to drain the swamps to raise rice. But when they failed, they went back to Michigan voluntarily. There was no Confederate army at that time. Then came the first grocery store, Ernest Falgout, 1906; first fresh meat store, Charles Falgout, 1913; first school teacher, (in a oneroom building), Mrs. Herman Rebstock, 1913; first ice factory, Dunbar-Dukate, (era 1914); first Catholic priest, Father Grall, 1916; first shrimp factory, T.K. Devitte, 1917; first movie house, Jefferson Rebstock, 1922; first bank, People’s Trust, 1922, (the picture show lasted until 1966 but the bank did not survive the depression); the first resident physician, Dr. John Gravios, and dentist Dr. Louis Leblanc, both 1928. Prior to that, visiting doctors Tetreau and Lemkowitz and dentist Thibodeaux and Trappy served the medical needs of the community. 1929 brought the first oil well in Leeville and in Golden Meadow, the first Medical Examiner; the first supply boats, (who was first and timeline unknown), were Milton “Cap Eagle with the ‘Lauri Ann’ and my grandfather, Paul Callais,
Segments of this column are paraphrased from a short biography of Golden Meadow by Mrs. Earl Rome, written in 1966 and located in the archives of the Lafourche Parish Public Library. The Rome family were prominent citizens of the town she writes about. Earl Rome worked for the Tamplain brothers in the shrimp and ice business. His office was over the Tamplain ice factory which was next door to General Seafoods where I worked. Earl’s father, Mac, Sr., was our night watchman. Small world! I remember Earl’s office had a unique air conditioning system at a time when a/c units were rare. The word conditioning denotes that the moisture and other factors of the cold air are controlled. This system was not. It was connected with a tube to the ice storage room below with a fan blowing in the cold air. It was always too cold for me, but Earl and staff had adapted. The Tamplains were not necessarily frugal but their business was ice, so to them, cold was good. Earl’s brother Harold was my boss when I worked at Golden Meadow Diesel. The Tamplains owned land on Highway 308 where Mavis “Bobby Orgeron built his home. Mrs. Rome wrote that the Lush, York, and Williams families were the first settlers of Golden Meadow and came down Bayou Lafourche in 1842 from Natchez, Mississippi. The Lush and York names are long forgotten, but not the Williams. Lush sold property to Abraham

Sr., with the ‘America’. The first Catholic Church was started in 1922 under legendary LaSalette priest, Father Pierre LaBelle. Today a new church building stands on the land, bought from my great grandfather Mathurin Callais. Small world! Unfortunately, also came the first hurricanes: Caminada, 1893, and Leeville, 1915, causing two more Cajun “Grand Derangements, first from Cheniere Caminada to Leeville and then to Golden Meadow. Hurricanes were orphans without names then, and they blew into our lands uninvited, unwelcomed and very destructive. Among the first evacuees in both cases were my paternal grandparents, Eugene and Odile Martin. Small ‘devastated’ world! (To be continued next week.) We interrupt this column for this special note of appreciation. (Hey, just like TV.)
I wish to personally thank Mr. Paul Chiquet and the Lafourche Library Board for building a special glass exhibit for me in the South Lafourche branch. Their first offer was to bring me to a taxidermist, have me

The owner must contact the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to redeem the property. The current property owner is responsible for all taxes due. Anyone who purchased property in 2014 may not receive a tax bill due to it
Property taxes are due by December 31, 2014, and unpaid taxes become delinquent on January 1, 2015. Per state law, delinquent taxes accrue interest at a rate of 1% per month until paid, and beginning on February 1, an additional 10% collection fee is charged for the unpaid amount. Partial payments can be set up online or at LPSO offices only. Partial payments must be at least 25% of the total amount of property tax due. The first payment must be made prior to December 31, 2014, and all payments must be completed by March 31, 2015. Failure to complete partial payments

- Be smart about parking. Always lock your vehicle and ensure all windows are closed. Avoid driving at night, but when necessary, park in well-lit areas away from dumpsters or larger vehicles that can serve as hiding places for thieves or carjackers. Never hide a second set of keys in a vehicle, and never leave a vehicle running or unattended. - Keep purchases out of sight. Hide purchases and store bags by keeping them in a trunk, or bring blankets and garbage bags to camouflage your gifts. Change parking locations each time you store purchases in your vehicle in case thieves are watching. Try making expensive purchases last giving thieves less opportunity to steal. - Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and gifts, especially outside the store. Locate your keys before arriving at your vehicle, and never put bags down or on top of a vehicle to open a door. Do not make more purchases than you are able to carry. - Only use ATMs in well-lit locations. Only use an ATM if necessary, and only withdraw the amount of cash needed. When possible, carry cash in your front pocket instead of your wallet or purse. Protect your PIN number at ATMs and registers by shielding the keypad from bystanders. Using a drive-up ATM is generally safest, but always remember to check your surroundings. - Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Con artists may try various ways to distract your attention with the intention of stealing your money or belongings. Be wary of anyone approaching you needing “quick cash or offering you a large check for a smaller amount of cash. You’ll likely end up holding a bad check. - Shop with a friend or relative, but leave children with a sitter. Criminals are more likely to target someone shopping alone than those with one or more people accompanying them. Children should be left with a sitter, though, as they could actually hinder your safety efforts by diverting your attention. - Only make secure online transactions. When shopping online, check for a “secure icon in the address bar when you begin the checkout process. The URL should begin with the letters “https. Always begin an online shopping session by typing the address of the official website in the address bar

instead of clicking on a link from another website or email. This will help avoid “phishing sites and emails, which often look like official sites but are used to steal your financial information. - Ensure packages are delivered to a person. When having items shipped, choose a location where someone will be present in lieu of allowing packages to be left unattended. Most delivery companies will also offer the option of picking up the package at their facility. - Save all receipts. If something is stolen, a receipt is often the easiest way to begin tracking the stolen item because it includes the time of checkout as well as pertinent information about the purchase. When making purchases online, save all correspondence and order confirmations. “In essence, we are asking people to use common sense and to be aware of their surroundings, said Sheriff Webre. “Following these tips will not only help protect yourself and your family, but you’ll make it easier for us to catch these despicable criminals and put them behind bars to prevent them from victimizing others. “When it comes to scams, always remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Sheriff Webre also reminds residents to take proper precautions to secure their homes, taking care to ensure gifts and merchandise are not visible from outside the residence. Vacationers should avoid posting social media updates revealing they are “leaving or out of town. When possible, they should ask a neighbor, friend, or relative to check on the house each day, checking for mail and picking up newspapers to avoid the appearance that no one is home. Residents should also
break down large boxes for high-value items so they can be stored in the garbage and not visible. “Criminality knows no bounds, said Sheriff Webre. “Sadly, residents
have even had Christmas yard decorations stolen in recent years. You must take care to safeguard your property and report any suspicious persons or activity to the Sheriff’s Office.

Saints lose third straight, 34-27 to Baltimore BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Battered all night by Baltimore’s relentless pass rush, Drew Brees could feel his protection collapsing and Terrell Suggs getting ahold of him as he urgently unloaded a pass to the right flat toward tight end Jimmy Graham. The ball sailed behind Graham and into the waiting arms of defensive back Will Hill, who raced 44 yards untouched for a goahead touchdown. The Saints never recovered and dropped their third straight game, 34-27 on Monday night. “This is a game of inches and split seconds and unfortunately a lot of those have not gone our way this year,” said Brees, who was also sacked four times. “We’ve got to accept what’s happened but remain undeterred in regards to our direction. We just need a win. Winning cures a lot of things.” Indeed, in the anemic NFC South, every victory is
big. Despite their recent skid, New Orleans (4-7) remains in a first-place tie with Atlanta (4-7) for the division lead, marking the first time a division leader in the NFL was three games below .500. “We’ve got to make sure we’ve got enough thick skin and be able to have the mental and physical toughness to bounce back and get ready to play next week, because we’re playing obviously an important game,” said Saints coach Sean Payton, whose club visits Pittsburgh on Sunday. “Obviously, to be playing for something is important and yet we’ve got to make sure some of the things we did better tonight we continue to build on and some of the things we didn’t do as well tonight we get corrected.” The Saints once again struggled on defense as well. Justin Forsett rushed for a career-high 182 yards and two touchdowns for the Ravens (7-4), who remained on the heels of Cincinnati (7-3-1) for first place in the AFC North.
“The offensive line did a great job of making those lanes open for me,” Forsett said. “I just tried to seize the moment.” Steve Smith, a longtime Saints nemesis from his 13 season in Carolina, caught four passes for 89 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown. His first-down catch in the third quarter precipitated a scuffle for which Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro was assessed a personal foul. “He tried to tackle me. I tried to stiff-arm him to the ground,” Smith said. “He threw a punch so I kind of went after him after that.”
The Saints carried a 1714 lead into halftime on Brees’ 26-yard scoring pass to Marques Colston, who brought it in while leaping between two defensive backs. Brees’ first scoring pass went for 10 yards to Graham. Brees also hit Graham for a 2-yard score with 40 seconds left, but an ensuing onside kick failed. The Saints were in position to take an early lead after Joe Morgan’s 67-yard run on an end around. It took defensive back Lardarius Webb’s horse-collar tackle at the 2 to prevent Morgan from scoring.

The play gave New Orleans first-and-goal on the 1, but the Ravens stopped two runs by Mark Ingram and a scramble by Brees before stuffing Ingram again on fourth-and-goal. “We just have to keep improving. We can’t point fingers,” Ingram said. “We have to stay together and continue to get better. We are all confident in each other and trust each other.” One play after Ingram’s failed fourth-down run, Forsett broke loose for a 38yard gain to start a drive that culminated with Smith’s touchdown catch as he crashed down backward

at the left edge of the end zone. That gave Smith 11 career touchdown catches against New Orleans, more than he has against any other team. NOTES: Baltimore improved to 4-0 against the NFC South. ... Saints NT Brodrick Bunkley left in the first quarter with a right leg injury. ... Morgan had a 62yard catch, giving him 60plus-yard gains the only two times he touched the ball. ... LSU aims to avoid first 3-game skid under Miles 8-A
Wednesday, November 26, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE BRYAN LAZARE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Les Miles has never lost three straight at LSU’s head coach. The Tigers, who returned to practice Monday after a weekend off, must win at Texas A&M on Thanksgiving Day to stop their current slide at two games and enhancing their postseason possibilities. “We are not desperate for a win,” sophomore defensive tackle Christian LaCouture said. “We just have to go out there and play LSU football and we’ll be OK. We have to treat this as a onegame season. Whatever we have to do correct things, we’ll do.” LSU’s current two-game skid is only its second since Les Miles became coach in 2005. The only occurred in 2008 when Ole Miss and Arkansas beat the Tigers at the end of the regular season. Now, LSU will try to avoid its first three-game losing streak in 15 seasons. The Tigers are 2-0 against the Aggies since they joined the Southeastern Conference two years ago. Yet the 2014 Tigers have not won since late October, when they upset Ole Miss 10-7. Since then, LSU has had two open dates with loses to Alabama and Arkansas in between. “I can tell you there has been some wearing on the program,” Miles said. “I can also tell you that everybody is handling it in a very straightforward manner. They are working hard at it. We have lost a game and our guys understand the things they need to do to get that (winning) feeling back.” LSU’s last two defeats have come in different ways. The Tigers lost a lead in the final minute against Alabama before falling 20-13 in overtime. The following week, LSU was thoroughly outplayed in a 17-0 defeat at Arkansas. The Tigers need a victory in the regular-season finale against Texas A&M or in their bowl game to secure an eight-win season for the 15th consecutive year. Such a streak is the longest in the country. “The opportunity to have a series of 15-straight 8-victory seasons is something that our football team would enjoy doing,” Miles said. “The players want to work hard and get things going. The great thing about it is the program in which I operate is full of real quality character people.” LSU is set to appear in one of six bowls with SEC ties: the Belk, Liberty, Music City, Outback, Taxslayer and Texas bowls. Conference officials will decide which one after the final College Football Playoff rankings come out on Dec. 7. “I would like this team to be identified as one that continued to get better and obviously one that finished the season in a completely correct way,” Miles said. “This team is a young enough team which really wants to improve. It is not ready to put next year in the near vision. “It appears to me that this group wants to play well in this game. They’re not really ready to go on from there. I enjoy that focus.” There is the possibility that Michigan coach Brady Hoke will be fired at the end of the season. On two previous occasions, Miles had conversations with Michigan officials about the head coaching position there. But Miles dismissed the notion that he might have his eye

Violence overtakes protests over no indictment in Ferguson
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Flames engulfed at least a dozen businesses in Ferguson early Tuesday and gunfire kept firefighters at bay after protests over the decision not to indict a police officer in Michael Brown’s death turned violent, despite pleas for peace from Brown’s family and others. Protesters smashed windows out of police cars and buildings, several of which were later looted and set ablaze, and officers lobbed tear gas from inside armored vehicles to disperse crowds in scenes reminiscent of the early days of unrest that followed the Aug. 9 shooting. But the violence that followed Monday’s decision to not indict Officer Darren Wilson, who is white, in the death of the unarmed black 18-year-old quickly took a more destructive turn — a storage facility, two auto parts stores, a beauty supply store and pizza shop were just some of the businesses that burned. An Associated Press photographer saw firefighters arrive at one scene only to be turned back by gunfire. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said during an early morning news conference that he “personally heard about 150 shots fired” during the course of the night, but said police did not fire a shot. He said most of at least a dozen burned businesses were “total losses” and noted two police cars were “basically melted.”
Voting From 1-A

On the local level, Steve Miller will square off against John Erny, III, for the Division B, District Judge seat in the 17th Judicial District, which encompasses Lafourche Parish.

As always, they prayed and gave thanks to God for their food and blessings before they began their feast. They also talked about the people and things for which they are most thankful. The children enjoyed baked turkey, weenie spaghetti, pizza, pretzels, fresh fruit, bread and milk. Pictured are HRCS Pilgrim PK 3 students and teachers Leah Alessi and Alyce Barrios.
