Two die in weekend motorcycle crash

Shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday evening, a 51year old Larose man and a 48-year old Larose woman were killed on LA 308 after the motorcycle they were riding on failed to negotiate a curve and struck a utility pole. The investigation revealed that a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on LA 308, near Emile Drive in Valentine. The motorcycle, driven by Scott Faulk, age 51, of Larose, failed to negotiate a left curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway, where it struck a utility pole ejecting both occupants. The rear passenger on the Harley was Dawn Mackey, age 48, also of Larose. Faulk and Mackey, who were both wearing US D.O.T. helmets, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Fifteen-year-old Cameron Richard was born with a cleft palate, and for a while his parents thought he wouldn’t be able to speak well let alone sing. But after receiving the golden ticket to Hollywood last Thursday on the final season premiere of “American Idol,” it was evident to the judges and viewers that Cameron has a golden voice as well. “This season, I’m 15 finally and it’s the first season I could (audition) and it’s the last season of the show,” he told the Courier and Daily Comet. “I wanted to take my chance while I had it.” The Raceland teen also recalled watching “American Idol” as a little kid when Carrie Underwood won the singing competition series.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Saying he won’t be a “business-as-usual” leader, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards took his oath of office Monday, promising to stabilize the budget and end cycles of financial crises that threaten public health services and colleges. As he placed his hand on the Governor family Bible for the John Bel Edwards swearing-in ceremony, Edwards became the only Democratic governor in the Deep South after an improbable victory. He follows term-limited Republican Bobby Jindal, inheriting a budget mess that will require him to work with a majority GOP Legislature. Edwards pledged bipartisanship in his approach, which he said needed to end Louisiana’s use of stopgap, shortterm financial maneuvers that create new budget troubles annually. See Governor Page 6-A

Powerball jackpot world’s largest at $1.3 billion JOSH FUNK Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Disappointed you didn’t win the Powerball jackpot this weekend? Don’t be. Lottery officials say the prize has now swelled to an estimated $1.3 billion — the world’s largest. Ever. “Biggest jackpot in the history of the world. Absolutely confirmed,” Texas Lottery executive director Gary Grief said. The jackpot is so big that billboards in Texas and around the country have to advertise the price as $999 million because they’re not built to show billions. The lottery computers will handle the decimal point without a problem. No one matched all six Powerball numbers Saturday night, leading to the astronomical prize. And that is all but certain to grow before the next drawing Wednesday, according to lottery officials. “We’ve never been at these levels,” said Grief, whose state lottery is part

of the Multi-State Lottery Association that runs Powerball. The odds to win are one in 292.2 million. Seventy-five percent of all the possible combinations were purchased before Saturday’s drawing, Grief said, and he expects that enough tickets will be sold to cover about 80 percent by Wednesday. About 95 percent of Powerball tickets have computer-generated numbers. “I’ve been in the industry over 20 years, and I’ve seen jackpots hit when we hardly have any of the potential numbers covered — like 5 percent of the possible combinations covered. And I’ve seen other jackpots when we’ve had 95 percent of the combinations covered and it rolls,” Grief said. The jackpot has ballooned since its Nov. 4 starting point of $40 million and spurred huge ticket sales. In Omaha, Les Wheeler said he probably overdid it by buying $30 worth of

tickets for Saturday’s drawing with a few friends, but they plan to do the same for this next jackpot. “I didn’t expect to win, but I had big dreams,” said Wheeler, 53. He said a new home in another state away from Omaha’s 16-degree temperatures were at the top of his wish list. Saturday’s winning numbers — 16-19-32-3457 and Powerball number of 13 — did gain some people a little wealth: 25 tickets won $1 million by matching five numbers, and three other tickets won $2 million because they paid extra to multiply smaller prizes. Darryl Collins, of Phoenix, and his husband each won $24 from the 70 Powerball tickets they bought. They plan to use that money toward buying more tickets for the new, higher jackpot. Collins said it was a shock that nobody won. “It was like only 500 people who missed it by one number,” Collins said. “It shows you how hard it is to win.” The 55-year-old real estate agent said he and his husband would definitely share the wealth. “I would give a lot of it to family and friends,” Collins said. “Who needs that much money?” Michael Montecelo, a security guard in San Francisco’s financial district, said he spent $20 on Powerball tickets and hasn’t yet checked if he won anything. He said he will buy another $20 worth of tickets even if thinking about winning more than a

billion dollars scares him a bit. “I think I would go into a state of anxiety, but it would be a good anxiety,” he said, smiling. Montecelo, 50, said he would retire and donate some of that money and work on administering the rest. “I would have to open an office and get a team of experts. I think my job would be to keep tabs on that money,” he said. “That would be a full-time job.” The record jackpot lured an unprecedented frenzy of purchases. Between Jan. 6 and Saturday’s drawings, more than $900 million in Powerball tickets were sold. Officials expect similar sales before the next drawing, but Grief said it’s hard to predict how excitement about the record jackpot will boost sales. “It’s exponentially greater than any sales that any of the states involved have ever seen,” he said. ___ Associated Press writers Terry Tang in Phoenix and Olga R. Rodriguez in San Francisco contributed to this report.

Mayor of Mandeville issued public urination citation

MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) — The mayor of Mandeville has been issued a public urination citation. Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou tells media outlets the incident occurred Thursday night at a Lake Pontchartrain Causeway crossover. He says Mayor Donald Villere was a passenger in a northbound SUV that pulled over Thursday at the 24-mile bridge. According to Dufrechou, Villere stepped out of the vehicle and an officer spotted the mayor as he relieved himself. The officer then issued Villere a citation of public urination. Villere says he was urinating because he has a medical history that includes bladder issues. He says the incident caught him off guard. Villere has been Mandeville’s mayor since 2010. He is seeking re-election in March. ______________

6 Louisiana statewide officials sworn into office

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Six statewide elected officials were sworn into office Monday. Four are returning for another term: Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Treasurer John Kennedy, Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain and Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon. Two are newly-selected: Former Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser took office as lieutenant governor, and former congressman Jeff Landry as attorney general. The men, all Republicans, took their oaths of office Monday on the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol at Edwards’ inauguration ceremony. Louisiana’s 144 state lawmakers were sworn in for their new four-year terms, as the House and Senate held their organizational sessions. Republicans have solid majorities in each chamber. In the Senate, the GOP holds 25 seats, while Democrats have the remaining 14. Sixty-one of the House’s 105 seats are held by Republicans, while 42 lawmakers in the chamber are Democrats and two are unaffiliated with a political party. The Senate has 11 new members out of 39 seats, and 29 new lawmakers were seated in the House. Four lawmakers who served in the House last term moved up to the Senate, which already was packed with ex-House members. ______________

Gun deaths surpass motor vehicle deaths in 21 states

Cameron From 1-A

“Ever since that season, I’ve always dreamed of being on the show and it’s unbelievable that I actually have this opportunity,” he said. Thursday was the first time Cameron, his family and viewers got to see him and countless others audition for Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban. “When we got to see that audition, tears ran down my eyes,” Tina Richard said of her son’s audition. “That’s my kid.” What viewers saw on Thursday was actually the fourth round of auditions for the Central Lafourche High School student. All of the auditions took place in Little Rock, Ark., over the summer. Cameron’s parents, grandparents and cousin traveled to Little Rock with him. “I’m so glad I got to bring my grandparents,” Cameron said. “I know they’re proud of me for everything, but I’m just so happy I can sing for them while I have them. It just can’t get better than that.” The Richards have re-

Washington, DC — Gun deaths outpaced motor vehicle deaths in 21 states and the District of Columbia in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, a new analysis from the Violence Policy Center (VPC) finds. In 2014, there were more gun deaths than motor vehicle deaths in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia, the analysis finds. Gun deaths include gun suicides, homicides, and fatal unintentional shootings; motor vehicle deaths include both occupants and pedestrians. Nine out of ten American households have access to a motor vehicle while fewer than a third of American households have a gun. Yet nationwide in 2014, there were 33,599 gun deaths compared to 35,647 motor vehicle deaths. In Louisiana, 896 died from gun deaths, while 807 are motor vehicle deaths.

ceived an overflow of calls, texts, and social media messages about Cameron’s audition. “It’s beyond words,” Cameron’s father Barry Richard said. “The phone was just blowing up. You try to do your work, but the phone just kept vibrating and ringing.” Even Cameron’s school administrators and classmates acknowledged his audition. “Today when I went to school, it was really different. A lot of people said ‘congratulations, Cam’ and that really means a lot,” he said. The Raceland teenager also said school administrators played video of his audition during the first hour of class and then one of his Youtube videos afterward. “A lot of my close friends were like, ‘good job,’ and that is what keeps me humble,” Cameron said. “I’m always going to be humble especially about things like this.” Before he performed Ed Sheeran’s “Give Me Love” before the judges, Cameron bonded with Connick about beignets and his Louisiana accent. “It was amazing meeting Harry Connick Jr. be-

cause he’s from Louisiana, too,” Richard said. “Nothing could’ve made me happier than that moment.” He also enjoyed meeting Lopez and Urban. Because he simply shook Lopez’s hand, he said his schoolmates told him he should’ve given her a hug. While the “American Idol” audition was Cameron’s first nationally televised performance, he is no stranger to performing for large crowds. In 2013, he performed in a state competition held in the Cajundome in front of more than 12,000 people. Eventually, he wants to perform to sold out crowds at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York. For right now, however, he and his parents are simply enjoying all the love and support. “It’s been a crazy ride and I hope it never ends,” Cameron said. To see Cameron’s next appearance on “American Idol,” tune into FOX on Thursday night.

“In a Small Pond” By Leroy Martin

Nashville, Ernest Tubb and the “Midnight Jamboree”

Two years before he died in a plane crash in Alaska, the great Will Rodgers wrote about the death of his “distant son” as he called Jimmie Rodgers. “He eased the hardships of the Great Depression with his songs.” Will’s words were sacrosanct, so it’s logical to assume that Ernest Tubb’s songs eased the hardships of World War II which could not be alleviated, expunged or erased, but just easing them helped soothe many broken hearts and dreadful memories. I met Ernest Tubb 12 times between 1943 and 1970, enough to consider him a friend. Saturday, March 3, 1951, was the last of a 4day visit to Nashville with my friends Reilly Pitre, Dudley Bernard, Leonce “Fee-ran” Duet, and my manager, Harry Simoneaux, Sr. The purpose and reason for this trip were important to me and I’ll soon write about it. I had written my friend Mrs. Jimmie Rodgers about it to seek advice and she had replied. She also gave me a very private telephone number to call when I got to Nashville, which I did. The number was Ernest Tubb’s office and I

spoke to his secretary. She looked up my name and told me I was to meet the man himself at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop at 11 p.m. on March 3. My Cajun friends and I were thrilled and the best was yet to come. My business in Nashville was with Troy Martin, an executive with Peer International Music Publishing Company and had been arranged a month earlier in New Orleans. So far this day he and I had attended a formal B.M.I. event at 7 p.m. and I had been interviewed on Radio Station W.S.M. at 9:30 by a very young Ralph Emery. We were on our way to attend Ernest Tubb’s Midnight Jamboree. My friends were leisurely dressed, but Mr. Martin and I were still in a suit and tie from the banquet with no time to change clothes. Arriving at the packed record shop I heard on the speaker “Mr. Leroy Martin, please come to the main office.” As I entered I faced the man himself, dressed in white from hat to boots. “You’re Leroy Martin,” he said. “Carrie Rodgers told me we met in New OrJacob James Punch, son of Camile and Angela Punch of Franklin. Kera is the granddaughter of Mary Boudoin Plaisance and the late Forest Plaisance of Cut Off and Percy Marie of Houma and the late Patricia Authement Marie of Larose. leans in 1943. I’m sorry I don’t remember because there were so many people there, but she told me you were a singer and had a professional band, and requested I meet you personally. I told her if possible I might let you sing a song on tonight’s program.” I froze as he handed me a guitar. “I have to know what song and if you can carry a beat, so sing a bar or two because I don’t want to embarrass you or me.” In a daze I began, and after about 15 seconds, which seemed like a year, he said, “That will do fine. Now go rehearse with the band, even though you seem a little over dressed for the occasion.” There were singers before me including a very young Goldie Hill (later Carl Smith’s wife). I was introduced and after Billy Byrd struck up my intro, something happened that I find hard to believe, even today. My mind went totally and completely blank, and I hadn’t touched a drop of liquor! I don’t remember singing or anything else until arriving at our hotel. My friends said I sang well and acted normal throughout my performance and that they had taken a picture of me at the band rehearsal. Forgotten? Unimaginable! I never told many peo-

ple about that episode since some of my friends thought I didn’t have

both paddles in the water anyway. I never had another experience like that again in my life. This particular loss of memory, as I found out many years later from a Psychiatrist friend, even has a name, Lacunar Amnesia, a short loss of memory because of a dramatic event that happened or was about to happen. Dramatic event indeed! I had just experienced probably one of the most unforgettable moments of my life and, yes, I had totally forgotten it! More next week. BYE NOW! Governor From 1-A

“We can no longer afford to lurch from year to year, cobbling together temporary fixes and expecting to realize permanent sustainability. If we don’t fix the structural budget deficit, we can’t fix any of our other problems, the new governor said at the inaugural ceremony held on the steps of the Louisiana Capitol. The Edwards administration estimates Louisiana faces a shortfall of up to $750 million in the state’s $25 billion budget for the remaining six months of the current fiscal year and a gap more than twice that amount for next year. While Edwards talked of working across party lines, however, the state House rejected his Democratic pick for speaker, instead choosing Republican Taylor Barras and breaking with a long-held tradition of voting with the governor on legislative leadership. Edwards also outlined a decidedly Democratic agenda that seemed likely to face resistance from a Legislature with Republican majorities in each chamber. He said he will ask lawmakers to increase the

minimum wage, pass a new equal pay law and work to make college more affordable, to combat poverty in Louisiana. And he said he’ll start the process for expanding Medicaid on Tuesday, as allowed under the federal health law. “Your tax dollars should not be going to one of the other 30 states that have expanded Medicaid when we are one of the states that expansion will help the most, he said, a line that received thunderous applause from supporters. But the governor called addressing the financial mess his top priority, saying he’ll seek to make budget cuts and “rework the failed system of tax incentives, credits and rebates, which too often bleed the state’s revenue and leave little to show for the spending. Edwards provided no specifics about which tax break programs he’d seek to scale back. He intends to call a mid-February special session aimed at closing the budget holes and making the tax changes. Six other statewide elected officials, all Republicans, also were sworn into office Monday. Four are returning for another term: Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Treas-

urer John Kennedy, Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain and Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon. Two are newly elected: Former Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser took office as lieutenant governor, and former congressman Jeff Landry as attorney general. The 144-member Louisiana Legislature also was seated earlier in the day. Prayers, music and pageantry were part of the inauguration ceremony, themed “Louisiana First. Edwards was heralded with a 19-round cannon salute and an F-15 flyover. LSU play-by-play announcer Jim Hawthorne served as master of ceremonies. Four of Edwards’ predecessors were on hand: Jindal and former Govs. Edwin Edwards, Buddy Roemer and Kathleen Blanco. Edwin Edwards and John Bel Edwards are not related. Edwards, 49, a West Point graduate and former Army Ranger, is the first Democrat to win a statewide elected office in Louisiana since 2008, after defeating one-time powerhouse U.S. Sen. David Vitter, a Republican who entered the race as the front-runner. A little-known member of the state House from rural Tangipahoa Parish, Edwards’ chance of a win was deemed slim when he announced his campaign plans more than two years ago, not with a formal kick-off event but in response to a question on a radio talk show. He built a campaign operation that mainly relied on family and close friends, as political prognosticators and those within his own party initially gave him little chance of success. With anti-abortion and pro-gun stances and a military resume, Edwards positioned himself as a moderate, capitalized on voters’ unease with Vitter’s 2007 prostitution scandal and built a campaign on personal integrity. ___ Follow Melinda Deslatte on Twitter at http://twitter.com/melindadeslatte .

Crawfish From 1-A

Several seasonal restaurants are opening this month to serve through early summer. The bigger crop hasn’t translated into lower prices that are usually seen in the later in the season after Lent. Most restaurants are still charging nearly $25 for

three pounds. “Crawfish farmers are selling from $2.50 to $2.25 all the way to $1.50, said David Savoy, a member of the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board. “A lot of that depends on the size. The big disparity is what we get per pound and what we the public has to pay. With the downturn in the regional economy, many residents are expected to be tightening their budgets this year, Savoy said. “Crawfish is a luxury item. There’s no way around it, he said. “What ends up happening is it becomes something people will put off. If they were eating it once a week, they may put it off and eat it once a month of just once a year. According to the research and promotion board, Louisiana’s crawfish industry generates more than $300 million a year. On average, the industry harvests between 120 million to 150 million pounds a year.

Social Security

From 1-A

cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to monthly benefits this year. Understandably, this announcement shook up recipients who look to Social Security for a significant part of their monthly income. It’s only the third time payments were frozen in the past 40 years since automatic COLA adjustments began, but here’s the rub – all three occasions occurred after 2010. In short, most seniors will have to live with an average monthly payment of $1,341 with married beneficiaries receiving a total of $2,212. Married and divorced individuals may have to rethink the way they claim benefits. Also last October, Washington settled a federal budget battle in part by closing some notable loopholes in Social Security law that allowed certain married couples to substantially increase their benefits over time and certain divorced individuals to claim benefits from former spouses under certain circumstances. These new restrictions on so-called file-and-suspend and restricted-claim strategies go into effect this coming May. In short, if you’re close to age 62 (the earliest age you can start claiming Social Security benefits) getting qualified advice has

never been more important. Other COLA-related issues: When there’s no costof-living adjustment, there’s no change in the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax, which will stay at $118,500 in 2016. This means earnings above that level aren’t subject to the Social Security portion of the payroll tax or used to calculate retirement payouts. At the same time, the Social Security earnings limit for people who work and claim Social Security payments will stay at $15,720 in 2016 for people ages 65 and younger. Social Security beneficiaries who earn more than this amount will have $1 in benefits temporarily withheld for every $2 in earnings above the limit. Some benefits are going down – a little. The highest possible Social Security payment for a 66-year-old worker who signs up for Social Security this year will be $2,639 per month, down $24 from $2,663 in 2015. The reason? Social Security noted that despite no cost-of-living adjustment there was an increase in the national average wage index, one of the statistical

guideposts the agency uses to calculate benefits. Service changes. If you haven’t created a My Social Security account, do so for two reasons: First, there have been reports of ID theft related to thieves attempting fraudulent signups for such accounts. Second, the agency is making more detailed account data available online such as estimates of monthly payments at various claiming ages. Also, Social Security expanded office hours in some of its field locations in 2015, so if you need faceto-face assistance, check hours of operation at your closest local office (https://secure.ssa.gov/IC ON/main.jsp). Bottom line: Social Security froze benefit amounts for the coming year, and that has an impact on both current and future recipients. You can’t fully understand your retirement without understanding how Social Security works, so now’s the time to learn.

Trojans fall in district opener

SPORTS Gazette Sports Reports

The Central Lafourche boys’ basketball team’s first district game was a thriller – an intense, back and forth game that went down to the wire. In the end, it was a heartbreaker for the Trojans who rallied from a large deficit, but then fell in overtime to H.L. Bourgeois. Friday’s game was an early nominee for game of the season – a game played before a jam-packed crowd in Mathews. H.L. Bourgeois led at halftime and was up by eight in the fourth quarter before the Trojans stormed back and forced overtime. Once there, H.L. Bourgeois showed championship moxie and took back control, beating Central 71-64. The loss drops Central Lafourche to 0-1 in district play and 11-5 on the season. Trojans coach Mark

Sanders said the loss stings, but added that his team has the chemistry to rebound. “We just didn’t do enough, Sanders said. “We battled, but we didn’t execute well enough. Bourgeois is a good club. We were prepared and ready. They just did more than we did. But not by much. Bourgeois came storming out of the gates early, using a late-minute run to earn a 20-13 lead after the first quarter. But Central Lafourche battled back, cutting the lead to just two at halftime – a 29-27 hole. In the third quarter, the Braves took control again, using balanced scoring and efficient offense to storm in front 3829 in the third quarter and then later 52-44 in the fourth. But the Trojans rallied

Carver Meet Mike Danos

Mike Danos of Cut Off has been carving for about three years. His favorite bird to carve is the Blue Wing Teal in a decorative style. He has sold some of his creations but mostly indulges in the art for his own pleasure. Mike is part of a group of carvers that promotes Cajun heritage, decoys, carving and keeping the age-old tradition thriving. He thoroughly enjoys his time with the group, especially listening to the other members talk about carving, competitions

and what they are currently working on. “Since I started carving, it’s amazing what I have learned. I never dreamed I would be doing what I’m doing today, said Mike. “I’ve made a lot of new friends who also love carving. It’s a great group to be a part of. You can view decoys carved by Mike and other members of the club at the Cajun Heritage Festival, which will take place the first weekend in June.

again, taking a 56-55 lead at one point and even appearing to win the game in regulation when Anfernee Poindexter made a layup and was fouled with 7 seconds left to tie the game at 60. But he missed the goahead free-throw, which sent the game to overtime. Once there, the Braves overwhelmed the Trojans offensively, running the game to its final tally. The Braves made six free throws in the overtime, while holding the Trojans to just four total points in the extra minutes. “We played well, H.L. Bourgeois coach Andrew Caillouet said. “We expect to compete at a high level in environments like this and against opponents like this and our kids played a great game. We’re happy with the win and with our start to district. Lionel Batiste led the Trojans with 21 points in the loss. Central Lafourche took the floor last night against Thibodaux with no score available at press-time. They’ll travel to take on Destrehan on Friday night. ___

Lady Trojans falter

The 2015-16 season has not been kind to the Central Lafourche girls’ basketball team, which has struggled mightily to find footing in District 75A. The Lady Trojans are 1-19 on the season, while struggling to compete in the brutally tough league, which features powers like East St. John, Thibodaux and Destrehan. The Lady Trojans fell 48-25 to H.L. Bourgeois on Friday – a game that the Lady Braves controlled from the onset. Destiny Shelby scored 28 points to lead H.L. Bourgeois, which led 20-10 at halftime before blowing open a 40-14 lead after the third quarter. Like the men, the Central Lafourche played Thibodaux last night and will battle Destrehan on Friday. ___

Tarpons boys waiting to get rolling

The South Lafourche boys’ basketball team hasn’t had as easy of a run in 2015-16. The Tarpons started the season 3-2, but have since lost 8 of their past 10 games to drop to 510 on the season. South Lafourche has played tough and hung with several tough foes throughout the season, but have not been able to consistently post four quarters of solid offense and defense. In the team’s latest game, South Lafourche squandered an early lead and fell 45-34 to St. Amant. The Tarpons are senior-heavy, but are without second leading scorer junior guard Seth Borne, who is out with a fractured ankle. South Lafourche coach Brian Callais said the injury is a blow, but added that someone else has to step up in his absence during district play, which begins on Friday night when the Tarpons host Morgan City.

The South Lafourche girls’ basketball team is off to a strong start in district play. The Lady Tarpons welcomed themselves to District 7-4A in style, routing Assumption 61-37 on Friday night – the team’s inaugural game in its new district. South Lafourche pressed the Lady Mustangs to no end, generating steals and easy transition offense to control the game from the opening tip. The Lady Tarpons are one of the top teams in Class 4A, owning a 16-5 record and a 1-0 mark in district. “We love our defense, South Lafourche girl’s basketball coach Rainie Terre-

Good Wife

Alan and Sandra lived on a cove at Gull Lake Alberta. It was early winter and the lower portion of the cove had frozen over. Alan asked Sandra if she would walk across the frozen part of the cove to the general store and get him some smokes and beer. She asked him for some money, but he told her, “Nah, just put it on our tab. Old man Stacey won’t mind.” So Sandra, being the

good wife walked across the ice, got the smokes and beer at the store and then walked back home across the cove. When she got home with the items she said, “Alan, old Stacey did actually mind putting the purchase on the tab and gave me a long lecture. Why didn’t you just give me some money?” Alan replied, “Well, Sandra, I didn’t want to send you out there with cash when I wasn’t sure how thick the ice was!”

Volunteer Emergency Services (G.I.V.E.S.) ambulance service and have been for 23 years this April. During my career for both of these important services, I was fortunate to serve as an elected officer for both boards of officers. I am a proud member of Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church, where I was able to serve two terms on the pastoral council. I also own and run my own business, “A Day in Paradise” fishing charters. So I have a high interest in the seafood industry on Grand Isle and Cheniere, and would like to see all fishermen prosper and the industry keep moving forward. Having three kids still in school, I would like to see more activities for our youth on Grand Isle and Cheniere. We have two community centers, several parks and a beautiful beach. Working together we can make that happen. If elected, I am looking forward to working with the mayor and the rest of the council members to continue the progress of Grand Isle and Cheniere. I will be a 24/7 council member, my door will always be open, and my cell phone always on to address any problems that arise. I would like to ask everyone if possible to please get out and vote on March 5, every vote is important. And please consider me for Council Member Seat B.

It is not easy working with local, parish, state and federal officials to represent such a small town as Grand Isle. It takes hard work to successfully complete major projects by working with all of the elected officials. Many trips to Baton Rouge and Washington are necessary to insure that projects are moved along and brought to completion. Working together with council members we brought $100 million to improve the island’s infrastructure. A list of some of these projects include the following; rehabilitation of all town streets; Multiplex/Health Care Center; new drainage pumps; fishing piers; new parish library; maintenance storage facility shed; handicapped crossovers on levee; new school gym; acquired baseball field from Energy XXI; new Carl Santiny Memorial Park (Chighizola Lane); upgraded existing parks; new Caminada Bridge; bicycle and golf cart path along Hwy. 1; Cleanest City Contest award winner two years in a row; Geo tube for Hurricane Protection Levee on gulf side; purchased old school gym to convert into a youth recreational facility; BP funds for Coastal Restoration; new fire department building and now currently applying for funding for a new town hall and police station. As president of Grand Isle Independent Levee District and working closely with the levee board members we made many accomplishments in the last few years bringing $12 million for rock and levee projects for Grand Isle and Cheniere. These levees were tied into our town drainage. We have acquired final permits to continue the rock projects on the north side on Grand Isle and Cheniere. Between the levee board and the town we work closely with the Grand Isle Port Commission, sharing a grant to provide the public dock for our fishermen. Also, working with Grand Isle Port Commission to dredge Bayou Rigaud going toward the western end to Caminada Bay. One of the things I have especially worked hard for is lobbying for the commercial fishermen and oilfield worker. I have supported efforts to keep prices competitive

for local seafood processing in business. I have worked hard to keep local oilfield businesses from relocating after major hurricanes and supported them to create new jobs. Grand Isle is becoming one of the best resort areas in the state of Louisiana and tourism is very important to the future of Grand Isle. Therefore, I will take whatever steps necessary to insure that Grand Isle is advertised and that any tourism dollars available at all levels of government are sought for and received. We take pride in having the cleanest beach in the state and for winning the Cleanest City Contest for our division. As the best recreational fishing can be found along

the gulf coast in Grand Isle, we will always promote fishing rodeos to attract all recreational fishing anglers from near or far. Again, I am asking for your vote and support in this upcoming election on March 5.

community. Being a lifelong resident allows me to have perspective of the past, present, and future needs of our community. Our residents and businesses depend on the oil industries, commercial and recreational fishing, camp owners, and tourism to support families and town of Grand Isle/Cheniere.

We as a community must restore pride and professionalism to the Police Department. Law enforcement across this country is rapidly changing in all aspects. While some great officers that patrol our streets and protect this island daily; their continued success is a direct reflection of the tools and training offered by a forwards thinking Chief. I have the past training and the temperament to protect our town and will be professional in my duties as Chief. I will also give the officers the best tools and resources allowed to make each better prepared to serve the public. One of my top priorities is to reestablish the D.A.R.E. program in our school, appoint a full

time school resources officer, and implement a junior police officer program. I had previously served 10 years on the Grand Isle Police force as lieutenant and as a commissioned Deputy under the late Sheriff Harry Lee. I mentioned that law enforcement has changed, but the basics of being a committed
