BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Replace the state gasoline tax with a sales tax on all fuels. Direct more money in the state construction budget to road work. Steer dollars to highways that otherwise pour into Louisiana’s “rainy day” fund. Those are among the ideas on a list approved Monday by a legislative task force trying to drum up new cash for highway repairs and improvements in a state that has a $12 billion backlog of road and bridge work. But rather than offer specific recommendations, the Transportation Funding Task Force is forwarding all the ideas it heard, without prioritizing proposals it submits to lawmakers. Flu season hitting state hard this year

The flu season is here with a vengeance, and this year’s flu shot does not appear to be a good match to the most common strain. The vaccine isn’t as effective as doctors had hoped it would be this flu season. The strain infecting most people around the country, H3N2, has mutated since the vaccine was created in February 2014 and makes the shot less effective for some patients. It’s estimated that 300,000 Louisiana residents have already contracted the flu, with 3,000 of them requiring hospitalization. It typically kills about 400 people in Louisiana each year, especially the elderly. Dr. Frank Welch, immunization medical director for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, said the flu season started early this year and described the flu season in the state so far as “terrible.” “It’s going to get worse before it gets better,” he said. Flu outbreaks normally peak in Louisiana this month and into February, resulting in aches, fever and coughs in those infected. But the outbreak has reached high levels since the latter part

of 2014, and Welch said he doesn’t see any signs of it letting up in the near future. He does recommend what he calls “kindergarten rules” to help prevent and spread the virus. “Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough and stay home when you’re not feeling well,” he said. “It’s not worth getting other people sick.” Most people who get the flu will not need medical care and will recover in less than two weeks. But some people, however, are more likely to get complications that can result in hospitalization and occasionally even death. Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections are examples of flu-related complications. To help prevent the spread of flu: • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

According to the South Lafourche Levee District (SLLD), the Larose floodgate, which protects lower Lafourche from a rising tide in the Intracoastal Waterway, has been removed for maintenance. What this means is that until the gate is reinstalled, it is possible that a 1.5-foot tidal surge in the Intracoastal Waterway could cause flooding in Golden Meadow. At Monday’s SLLD public meeting, General Manager Windell Curole explained why the removal of the gate was required and the risk involved, and expressed confidence in getting the work done in a timely manner. The Larose floodgate, also known as the Ted Gisclair floodgate, has been in place for many years but has never been removed, said Curole. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has mandated periodic examination of the floodgate as a routine step in maintaining the gate system. But SLLD has been hesitant to remove the gate in the past because of the risk of flooding and instead sent divers below the water line to examine the gate doors. “The divers saw no rust and only a handful of barnacles on the locks,” said Curole. As to the question of why the gate has been removed now, Curole said because of USACE’s insistence, SLLD felt that the work should be done in the first two months of the year. Analysis: Hospital decision good for Jindal, less for others MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal got only good news when the federal Medicaid agency signed off on financing plans for his LSU hospital privatization deals. But the result was more mixed for lawmakers and future governors, who learned Jindal’s deals will leave them with a lingering budget worry after he’s gone. Approval from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, known as CMS, will keep money flowing to pay for the privatization contracts and ensure care for the uninsured won’t be upended. That keeps the hospital deals on track for Jindal’s last year in office. CMS approval came with a blow, however: Louisiana was ordered to repay $190 million to the federal government for pieces of prior hospital deals the Medicaid agency rejected. That won’t touch Jindal though, because an appeal of the repayment order is expected to drag on for years. If the hospital deals cause the state financial trouble, Jindal will be gone when the mess has to be cleaned up. The Republican governor privatized nine LSU-run hospitals and their clinics over the last two years through no-bid contracts. In most instances, the management company of a nearby hospital took over operations of the LSU facilities. Three contracts closed an LSU hospital and shifted its services to private facilities. Jindal said the deals, estimated to cost $1.2 billion this budget year, provide better health care for the state’s poor and uninsured, with reduced wait times, expanded services and improved access. But the Jindal administration didn’t first get federal approval for the financing deals, which rely heavily on federal Medicaid money to stay afloat. And that caused problems. In May, CMS rejected financing plans for six deals, which governed the management transfer of hospitals in New Orleans, Lafayette, Bogalusa, Shreveport and Monroe, along with the closure of LSU’s Lake Charles hospital and move of its inpatient services. The Jindal administration rewrote the contracts in consultation with the federal Medicaid agency. The LSU Board of Supervisors backed them in October.

And federal officials approved them late last month. That keeps Medicaid dollars flowing to the deals. But federal officials had problems with “advance lease payments” the hospital managers paid upfront as part of their agreements with the state — and CMS has demanded reimbursement of $190 million in federal money it says was tied to those upfront payments. Jindal used the millions of dollars in advance lease money to plug state budget holes. Federal officials said those payments appeared linked to higher Medicaid payments that the private hospital operators were receiving, reimbursement rates that were larger than what other private hospitals in the state get for uninsured and Medicaid patient care. The Jindal administration described the advance lease payments as a sign from the private companies that they were committed to the hospital privatization deals and disagreed that they were somehow improper. But the federal Medicaid agency said the advances “are not usual and customary industry payment arrangements.” Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals intends to appeal the repayment order and says such appeals typically take five to seven years to be decided. Under that timetable, Jindal and administration officials whose budget-crafting benefited from the advance lease payments will be gone before any repayment could come due. Meanwhile, another financing threat looms. The hospital deals were built on sizable amounts of federal uninsured care dollars, but that pool of money is slated to start shrinking in 2016 under the federal health care overhaul. The idea was that more

people would get insurance, particularly through Medicaid, under the health revamp and fewer dollars would be needed to pay for uninsured care. But Jindal opposes the Medicaid expansion, so Louisiana hasn’t shifted more people to the coverage. If cuts to the uninsured care dollar stay in place, federal officials will have wide latitude over how to

divvy them. If the agency chooses to sizably ratchet back the allocation to Louisiana, the long-term viability of the LSU hospital deals could be threatened. That potential problem, too, would be for Louisiana’s next governor to handle.

His musical and political life is well known, so following are some of the personal encounters we had. Jimmy had a camp on Grand Isle he often visited. Once at Leonard Autin’s grocery store in Golden Meadow he met a young musician, Harrison Anselmi, who was so shy that when asked to sing, he did so, but behind a door, heard but not seen. Jimmy liked him and in the ensuing years often invited him to his camp. By that time Harry and I were playing with “Dudley Bernard and the Southern Serenaders. Tarpons, Trojans endure tough weeks Gazette Sports Report

The South Lafourche boys’ basketball team played beautiful basketball for two and a half quarters on Friday night at Terrebonne. But another third quarter run prevented the team from getting its first district win of the season. The Tarpons led 25-21 at halftime and made an early third quarter spurt to push their lead close to double digits. But toward the middle of the quarter, the Tigers were able to take control, using a 19-point third quarter to seize control and earn a 63-48 win. The loss drops the South Lafourche boys to 02 in district. Last Tuesday, they were blown out by East St. John. “I think we played some good ball tonight,” South Lafourche coach Brian Callais said. “I think in the end, we just ran out of gas. I could see in the locker room at halftime that we

were just gassed. I told them to relax and use the 10 minutes to rest. In the second half, we were never able to recover. Give credit to Terrebonne. They got hot and made the plays they needed to win the game.” For the Tarpons, it all started good at first. In the opening 16 minutes, South Lafourche ran its base offense to perfection early, using a litany of cuts and screens to get easy layups and an early 15-7 lead after the first quarter. “We knew what they were going to do,” Terrebonne coach Derek Szush said. “But that’s the beauty of their offense – sometimes you can know and still not be able to defend it.” In the second quarter, the Tarpons held firm, despite an increase in defensive pressure from the Tigers. In the third and fourth quarters, Terrebonne com-

plete took over, outscoring South Lafourche 42-23 over the final 16 minutes to secure the win. Juniors Shak Dillon, Kobe Chouest and Trevor Rebstock led South Lafourche in scoring with Dillon leading the way with 18 and the other two pitching in 12 apiece. Callais said he was proud of his team’s fight – even in defeat. “We’re short-handed,” Callais said. “We’ve had injuries and a lot of things hurt our numbers. I was proud of how we competed. We never gave up, and I’m proud of that.” While the South Lafourche boys fought hard and eventually succumbed to a Terrebonne run, the Lady Tarpons fought past the Lady Tigers on their home floor to earn a 49-28 win. Just three nights after losing a heartbreaking road game in overtime to East St. John, South Lafourche looked sluggish early, shooting less than 20 percent from the floor in an ugly first quarter that saw the Lady Tarpons hold an 8-5 lead. In the second and third quarters, South Lafourche still wasn’t an offensive juggernaut, but its defense limited the Lady Tigers to virtually nothing. That enabled the Lady Tarpons to take a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter. Not wanting to be run out of their home gym, Terrebonne cut the lead to 12 at one point, but South Lafourche ballooned it right back to around 20 points – where it remained for the rest of the win. Freshmen Traya Bruce and Victorianna Nelson were clutch for South Lafourche in the win, combining for 21 of the team’s 49 points. Junior guard Brinkley Callais added 11, as well. The win makes South Lafourche 16-4 on the season and 2-2 in district. Both the Tarpons’ boys and girls will take on H.L. Bourgeois at home on Friday. They both played Central Lafourche at home last night with no score available at press-time. ___

Trojans boys lose key game

Most prognosticators say that the District 7-5A boys’ basketball district race will be a two-team race between Central Lafourche and East St. John – the team squads heavily favored to compete for the district championship.

So far, it’s advantage East St. John. The Wildcats earned a huge early-season district win on Friday night, beating Central 67-48 before a rowdy crowd in Mathews. The win drops Central to 1-1 in district play. They used a huge comeback win to beat H.L. Bourgeois on opening night. But most importantly, East St. John is now 2-0 with a heads-up road win over their most difficult foe. “We came here to win a basketball game,” East St. John coach Yussef Jasmine said. “The crowd, the environment and everything had no factor. We came here to win a ballgame. We lost here last year, and our kids didn’t want that to happen again.” The Wildcats controlled the flow from start-to-finish. The Wildcats roared to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led 38-22 at halftime. Central Lafourche’s offense never looked in sync throughout the game because of cold shooting and turnover woes. “We were flat from the beginning,” Central Lafourche coach Mark Sanders said. “We let them take the crowd out of it early, and they played with confidence all night.” The loss drops Central Lafourche to 13-4 and 1-1 in district. While the Trojans’ boys lost a tough one, Central’s girls’ continued to struggle. The Lady Trojans fell 33-32 at H.L. Bourgeois last Tuesday night before being blown out 56-18 against East St. John on Friday. The losses drop the Lady Trojans to 2-14 on the season and 0-4 in district. Both Central’s boys and girls will be home on Friday night against Destrehan. Both also took on the Tarpons in Galliano last night with no score available at press-time.

Bears hire Saints’ Ryan Pace as GM Wednesday, January 14, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

5-A

ANDREW SELIGMAN AP Sports Writer

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — New Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace recalled driving from Eastern Illinois to New Orleans in a beat up car for a job interview all those years ago. From working in gameday operations with the Saints for a year to rising through their front office and landing Chicago’s general manager job, it has been quite a climb. Pace was introduced Friday as the Bears’ GM, charged with turning around a franchise with just one playoff appearance in the past eight years. “I’m really proud of the path that I took. It just makes me smile,” said Pace, who at 37 is the league’s youngest general manager. Pace comes to Chicago after 14 years with the Saints — 13 in their personnel department. He has a big task rebuilding a team that went 511 and fired GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman after one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory. Pace, a defensive end at Eastern Illinois in the late 1990s, helped build a championship team with the Saints. He also was the interim GM during the “Bountygate” sanctions. “I was in a good situation in New Orleans,” he said. “I worked with great people there in a good environment. I wasn’t one of those guys looking to jump to the next job. This was a very thorough and calculated decision by me and my family. And that’s because this is a historic franchise that desperately wants to win and they’re willing to do whatever it takes for that to happen. And I want to be leading that charge.” Topping Pace’s to-do list is hiring a coach. As for Cutler, who signed a seven-year, $126

million deal after the 2013 season, Pace is not ready to draw any conclusions. The contract makes him tough to trade. Cutting Cutler could be an option if the Bears decide not to keep him. “I want to get to know Jay,” he said. “I want to get to know him further before I come to these conclusions.” Pace beat out Kansas City Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard, who spent 12 years in Chicago working under Emery and his predecessor Jerry Angelo, along with Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson and Houston Texans director of pro personnel Brian Gaine. Pace will report directly to team president Ted Phillips and will “lean heavily” on him along with chairman George McCaskey and consultant Ernie Accorsi in the coaching search. But he will have final say on that as well as the makeup of the roster. “I want to win,” he said. See Pace Page 10-A

Public’s help sought in residential burglary case

A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for a residential burglary in Gray. On an afternoon in late December, deputies began investigating a suspected burglary after a safe belonging to residents of Blue Ridge Drive in Gray was found several streets over. The safe’s owners were on vacation, but deputies found no signs of forced entry at the time. Upon returning to their home, the residents also found that a laptop computer, a gas card, and other items were missing. Through investigation, deputies learned the gas card had been used at a Bayou Blue convenience store on December 29, and were able to obtain a surveillance photo of a male subject who used the card. Investigators are asking for help in solving this crime. Anyone who can

Local high school student selected to perform at Carnegie Hall Brock Williams, a student at South Lafourche High School, has been selected for the 2015 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, presented by WorldStrides. He will perform as a first tenor at Carnegie Hall in February with the Honors Choir. Participation in one of the three Honors Ensembles is limited to the highest rated high school performers from across North America and select schools internationally. Brock Williams, a senior, auditioned this fall for the Honors Performance Series and was accepted after a review by the Honors Selection Board. Acceptance to the elite group is a direct result of the talent, dedication, and achievements demonstrated in his application and audition recording. Brock will join other performers from 49 United States, several provinces in Canada, and several foreign countries for a special performance at world-famous Carnegie Hall, a venue that marks the pinnacle of musical achievement. According to Morgan Smith, Program Director, “Being selected to the Honors Performance Series is something each finalist should be extremely proud of accomplishing. We process more than ten thousand nominations annually, selecting only the most talented performers applying on an international level. Working with these conductors and performing at Carnegie Hall is a oncein-a-lifetime experience that these student musicians never forget.” Brock has studied music for 6 years and is a member of the South Lafourche High School

Spicy Onion Rings

Onion rings are a popular side dish. Though many people reserve their consumption of onion rings for nights out at the diner, onion ring aficionados need not wait until their next night out on the town to enjoy their favorite side dish, as onion rings can easily be made right at home. Those who want to add a little extra kick to their onion rings can do just that thanks to the following recipe for “Rings of Fire” courtesy of Bob Blumer’s “Surreal Gourmet Bites” (Chronicle Books). Rings of Fire Yields 12 2 Vidalia onions or other sweet onion 11/2 cups flour 2 serrano chiles, minced (plus a couple in reserve) 2 teaspoons salt plus more to season finished rings 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup beer 1 tablespoon Tabasco (ideally chipotle Tabasco) 3 cups peanut oil for frying Slice onions in 1/4-inch slices and separate into rings. Select the 12 largest, most aesthetically pleasing rings. In a medium bowl, add 1 cup of the flour, the serranos, 2 teaspoons salt, the cayenne, and the pepper. Slowly whisk in beer and add the hot sauce. The batter should be the consistency of thin pancake batter. In a medium, tall pot, heat oil to 350 F. In a medium bowl, add remaining 1/2 cup flour. Toss onion rings in flour to coat. Shake off excess flour. Dip one onion ring in batter until thoroughly coated, then fry for approximately 2 minutes, or until golden. Turn once during frying. Remove and drain on paper towels. Let cool, then season with salt and taste. Count to 30, then assess the heat level. Add more of everything hot according to your pain threshold (and that of your guests). Continue frying rings in small batches and serve immediately.

Choir (where he serves as president), the Lafourche Honor Choir, and the District Honor Choir. He has participated in the South Lafourche Christmas Production and Variety Show and the Farm Bureau Talent Show. Brock also received the Superior Baritone Solo Award, serves as vice president of his International Thespian Society chapter, and performed with the Disney Choir for three years. In response to his selection as a Finalist, Brock

said, “It is an honor to participate in the Honors Performance Series because I truly have a love for music and singing, and I know this experience will impact my life forever!” Finalists will come together for five days in February in New York City to have the opportunity to learn from conductor Dr. Eph Ehly, work with other finalists, and get a taste of New York City. On Sunday, February 22, performance is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased beginning 60 days prior to the performance through the Carnegie Hall box office.

Parish shows support for police by designing decal

Wednesday, January 14, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

Given everything they do for the local communities they serve, officials with Lafourche Parish Government decided to show their support for police by designing a decal. These decals, which have been placed on the driver’s side of all parish vehicles, feature a Fleur-de-lis shape, which is an image that has become a mainstay in south Louisiana and is actually the official state symbol, per a bill signed into law by Governor Bobby Jindal in 2008.

The wording, “We Support Our Police,” can be found encircling the solid black Fleur-de-lis that has a blue stripe stretching across its middle section. “When you think about all the dangers police officers face day in and day out, plus a recent uptick in violence against police officers, the parish just wanted to do something to tell them we appreciate them,” Parish Administrator Archie Chaisson said. A small number of these

decals have been made available through Southern Signs and Designs in Thibodaux for anyone interested in purchasing one of them. The decals, which cost $4 each, should be available for purchase by the end of next week, according to Chaisson.

Pace From 5-A

“The challenges, the first step, again is hiring the right head coach to help me lead that charge. And that’s all I’m focused on right now. That’s the most critical thing we can do right now. I think it helps me, again, to have a step-by-step plan in my head — a progressive plan — and right now, that’s hiring a head coach, Step 1. Phillips said Pace impressed the Bears during his interview. “He just did a great job, from showing intensity, from showing toughness, from really being able to articulate the kind of head coach he wants and how to build the roster, he said. The Bears interviewed Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase before Pace was hired. They also interviewed Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles on Thursday right after they hired their GM. Pace, who was in on that session, indicated he won’t hire a coach based on a certain scheme. He said more interviews have been lined up since he was hired, but would not reveal names. Previous head coaching experience in the NFL is not a requirement. He mentioned how the Saints’ hiring of Sean Payton in 2006 sparked a jump from 3-13 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to the NFC South championship. Signing Drew Brees obviously helped, but the new coach was quickly able to get his players to buy in. “Sean came from (Bill) Parcells, so discipline was important right off the bat, Pace said. “But Sean has a charisma, a confidence and an energy to him that’s infectious. I think that’s important, you know? When a head coach gets in front of the room, think about it, he’s selling his plan to the players. And there needs to be buy-in. Sean Payton has that, and we’ll be looking for some of those qualities.

He mentioned re-establishing Chicago’s identity as a team that relies on the run and tough defense, areas it veered from under Trestman. Pace also insisted he is fine with the Bears maintaining their chain of command, with the GM reporting to the president rather than the chairman. He said Phillips reminds him of Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and that there’s “an automatic connection. “It’s a structure that we like, McCaskey said. “It’s a structure that we think works. But as Ryan pointed out, more important than the structure are the people that you have in the various positions. We think we have a good one in general manager. Note: McCaskey does not expect Accorsi to remain on the payroll after the coaching search is completed. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

Floodgate From 1-A

“We checked (the history on yearly tidal fluctuations) and this is the best time of the year to do the work and avoid this type of flooding, he said regarding the risk of removing the gate doors. SLLD advertised for bids to examine, refurbish and improve the gate doors and recently awarded the $1.38 million project to Centaur Construction, LLC of Belle Chasse. The two gate doors have already been barged to Belle Chasse where they will be sandblasted and painted. In addition, 5 feet of wall will be added to the top of each door to bring them up to a +13 foot elevation when reinstalled. At Monday’s meeting, project engineer Joe Picciola of Picciola and Associates, Inc., noted that work is proceeding well and requested a first payment to

Centaur in the amount of $239,685. The gate should be back on site in February and the project completion date is February 27th. Said Picciola: “We’re keeping our fingers crossed that we can get this project done soon! Although SLLD does not expect delays, according to the contract Centaur could be penalized at a rate of $2,000 per day if the project runs beyond the completion date. SLLD says the goal of the gate system is to maintain the water level in Bayou Lafourche to a safe level below a +1.0 ft. elevation. When the gauge at either floodgate reaches +1.0 feet, the gates are closed.

Instead, the panel will let them sift through concepts to see which generate the most interest. Its report was due to lawmakers this week. Rep. Karen St. Germain, D-Pierre Part, task force chair, said she hopes lawmakers will consider some ideas in the twomonth regular legislative session that begins in April. “What this funding task force has done, it has started the discussion, she said. But the term-limited St. Germain, chair of the House transportation committee, knows much of the work to chip away at the hefty backlog will fall to a new governor and lawmakers who will be elected this fall. “The next administration has a whole lot to worry about, and this is a big part of it, she said. It’s unclear if the eightmember task force found ideas that could gain passage this year. Gov. Bobby Jindal opposes tax hikes, and lawmakers may be reticent to consider fee increases as they face voters in re-election campaigns this fall. Meanwhile, the state’s budget shortfall tops $1.4 billion, making it unlikely lawmakers will consider shifting existing dollars to transportation needs while they’re struggling to continue ongoing services. Louisiana, like many states, is struggling with a stagnant gasoline tax that hasn’t kept pace with construction inflation. On top of that, Jindal and lawmakers have steered millions in transportation dollars to instead pay for state police operations each year. The anti-tax environment left the transportation task force — which included lawmakers, state officials and construction and engineering representatives — looking for creative financing proposals. In the draft report approved Monday, ideas include swapping the state’s 16 cent-per-gallon gas tax for an 8 percent sales tax on a broader array of fuel sales and requiring that 60 percent of the state’s construction budget be spent on transportation. Partnering with the private sector on infrastructure projects was suggested, which could involve a private company building a road project in exchange for charging user fees or tolls. Sen. Robert Adley, RBenton, chairman of the Senate transportation committee, recommended including a proposal that the state require owners of vehicles that run on compressed natural gas to pay a fuel tax equivalent to the state’s gasoline tax. Adley said that would ensure “a fair tax across the board for drivers. The task force plans to discuss other possible funding ideas before it wraps up in March.

HOUSTON (AP) — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. plummeted by 61 this week to 1,750. The Houston firm said Friday in its weekly report 1,421 rigs were exploring for oil and 329 for gas. A year ago 1,754 rigs were active. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Alaska and Arkansas each gained two rigs and Ohio gained one. Texas plunged by 30, North Dakota dropped by seven, New Mexico fell six, Utah and Wyoming each dropped by five, Kansas and Oklahoma each fell by three, Pennsylvania dropped two and Colorado and Louisiana each fell by one. California and West Virginia were unchanged. The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999. ___

Buckeye Bash: Ohio State overcomes setbacks to win first playoff title, beating Oregon 42-20

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ohio State was done when Braxton Miller got hurt in August. Ohio State was done

when it lost at home to Virginia Tech in September. Ohio State was done when J.T. Barrett got hurt in November. A funny thing happened: Every time the Buckeyes looked done, they kept getting better. And in the new era of college football, that was enough to earn a chance to win a championship. They took advantage of an opportunity they never would have had in the BCS, shrugging off questions about if they belonged among the college football’s final four. Cardale Jones, Ezekiel Elliott and the Buckeyes won the first College Football Playoff national championship, upsetting Marcus Mariota and Oregon 42-20 on Monday night.

Man wanted for felony thefts at local retailers A reward is being offered for information on the whereabouts of a man wanted for thefts at local retailers. In late October, detectives began investigating a series of transactions at a Cut Off hardware store wherein a male subject had purchased several items with checks, which were later, canceled by the issuing bank. The man, later identified as Tate Callais, 44, had used his true identity in some transactions and a false identity for others. He also returned some of the items purchased with the checks and obtained cash back for them. Callais had purchased nearly $800 in merchandise from the store within a fiveday period, and returned some of the items for which he received over $500 in cash back. Investigators made contact with Callais by phone on multiple occasions, but Callais refused to meet with deputies about the transactions, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Then, on December 24, deputies responded to a Larose grocery store in reference to a theft. Through the investigation, deputies learned a man had entered the store that morning claiming to represent a local company, which provides services to the oil and gas industry. Callais approached the cashier with over $600 worth of merchandise and

gift cards and attempted to purchase the i t e m s with a purchase o r d e r number on behalf of the company. The cashier had concerns about the transaction and called for a manager, but in the meantime, Callais left the store with the items for which he had not paid. The store manager then contacted the service company Callais claimed to represent and learned the purchase order did not exist. Following an investigation, detectives developed Tate Callais as the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Detectives are now seeking the public’s help in locating Callais who has two warrants for felony theft and two for contempt of court with bond amounts totaling $17,500. Detectives believe Callais is residing in the Houma area, but he is known to visit the South Lafourche area frequently. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers Bayou Region at 1800-743-7433 or by texting “GIVEATIP plus your message to 274637. Tips can also be submitted using the TipSubmit Mobile application or online at www.crimestoppersbr.org
