The Veterans Memorial District Park will have a new adopted orphan, a giant size military truck, one that is able to carry a load of ammunition or explosives capable of destroying a whole city or sinking a battleship. The United States furnished Russia and Great Britain trucks like this one by the thousands during the Second World War and Korean War. They were still in great demand as a new conflict arose in the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. As better equipment and different ways of using these massive vehicles were teaching our military how to better make use of them, they were being put aside and becoming obsolete. Construction has begun on the new Industrial Floodwall along the Intracoastal Waterway in Larose. Thibodaux based Sealevel Construction was awarded the project in October after a long awaited approval from FEMA. This project is being funded as part of the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and is one of the largest projects awarded through the HMGP process. The $5 million project will construct a new eight-foot tall sea wall along 2,650 feet of Industrial Park road to protect area business and residents from flooding due to high water in the Intracoastal Waterway. The project will also include improvements to area drainage and the resurfacing of a portion of Industrial Park Road. “As we have seen in the last few weeks, it does not take a hurricane or tropical storm to cause a problem,” said Parish President Charlotte Randolph. “This project will protect 15 businesses and over 300 homes from flooding during weather events and high tide situations.” A groundbreaking event is scheduled for Monday, November 9, at the construction site, located at 800 Industrial Park Road in Larose. Local officials along with staff from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOSHEP) will be in attendance to discuss the project and view the project area. The project was designed by Larose based Angelette-Picciola Engineers.
Early voting begins this week Absentee ballot on page 7-A
Early voting begins Saturday, Nov. 7 and runs through Nov. 14 for Louisiana’s Nov. 21 general election, with candidates urging supporters to cast their ballots in advance since the statewide and local races are expected to compete for attention on Election Day with college football games and hunting plans. Here’s a look at the ballot and how to vote in advance: Louisiana voters will be asked to choose a new governor to replace Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is term-limited and leaves office in January. In Louisiana’s open primary election on October 24, the two candidates who had the most votes and who will square off in the Nov. 21 runoff are Democratic state Rep. John Bel Edwards and Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter. In the runoff for lieutenant governor, Republican Billy Nungesser and Democrat Kip Holden will face off. Holden is the mayor of Baton Rouge, See Voting Page 5-A

More than 41,000 La. OMV collection letter cases resolved
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles has cleared more than 41,000 cases of drivers flagged for having lapsed insurance coverage, collecting about $6 million in fines. That’s the latest data released Wednesday by Col. Mike Edmonson, the state police superintendent who oversees the motor vehicles agency. Edmonson says in nearly one-third — or 12,800 — of the resolved cases, drivers didn’t pay anything after showing they shouldn’t have been fined. Another 28,500 people paid for violating the state’s insurance coverage requirement. The OMV received complaints after mailing 1.1 million collection letters to drivers. Some drivers said they were being improperly accused of lapsed insurance. Edmonson said OMV added phone lines and lengthened hours to help people clear improper penalties. More information for drivers who received collection letters is at http://www.expresslane.org/ ___
Seattle’s ‘gum wall’ to be cleaned after 20 years
SEATTLE (AP) — After 20 years of people sticking their gum to the walls of an alley by Seattle’s Pike Place Market, officials say it is time for a cleanup. Pike Place Market announced this week it will take down the estimated 1 million pieces of gum off the walls of Post Alley. Known as the “gum wall, the sticky landmark has become a popular attraction to visitors and locals. Besides gum, people leave pictures, business cards and other mementos. Some pieces of gum were shaped into hearts and messages. Tourist Katri Mattsson said the gum wall was “pretty gross, but also “in a way very impressive. The market has hired a contractor that will use steam to melt off the gum, beginning Nov. 10. Pressure washing damages the historic building too much. ___

What a Life!
Sunday, November 8, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The wisdom of the saints can help us in our spiritual growth
November 1 is the Feast of All Saints. We celebrate the heroic lives of those who went before us and those who are trying to be good models for others. These are our “elders” in the faith. The following is some of their wisdom that will help us in our spiritual growth. “The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace.” – Blessed Teresa of Calcutta “We should take as a maxim never to be surprised at current difficulties, no more than at a passing breeze, because
with a little patience we will see them disappear. Time changes everything.” – St. Vincent de Paul “Consider God’s charity. Where else have we ever seen someone who has been offended voluntarily paying out his life for those who have offended him?” – St. Catherine of Siena “By accepting the sufferings ‘offered’ by life and allowed by God for our progress and purification, we spare ourselves much harder ones. We need to develop this kind of realism and, once and for all, stop dreaming of a life without suffering or conflict. That is the life of heaven, not earth. We must take up our cross and follow Christ courageously every day; the bitterness of that cross will eventually be transformed into sweetness.” – Fr. Jacques Philippe “Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will, and being just what God wants us to be.” – St. Therese of Lisieux “Be one of the small number who find the way to life, and enter by the
Scoliosis & Chiropractic
Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine. It is often detected by uneven shoulder heights, a loss of structural balance, or a change in posture. Unfortunately, the most common treatment approach has been to wait and see how bad it gets, resorting to unsightly braces, or eventually surgery, if it progresses too far. The Chiropractic approach is to use specific spinal adjustment, often combined with corrective exercises. If detected early enough, we have had excellent success with scoliosis cases.

narrow gate into Heaven. Take care not to follow the majority and the common herd, so many of whom are lost. Do not be deceived; there are only two roads: one that leads to life and is narrow; the other that leads to death and is wide. There is no middle way.” – St. Louis de Montfort “You change your life by changing your heart.” – St. Benedict of Nursia “There is still time for endurance, time for patience, time for healing, time for change. Have you slipped? Rise up. Have you sinned? Cease. Do not stand among sinners, but leap aside.” – St. Basil the Great “There is nothing the devil fears so much, or tries to hinder, as prayer.” – St. Philip Neri “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth. God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth – in a word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.” – Pope St. John Paul II “We have been called to heal wounds, to unite what has fallen apart, and to bring home those who have lost their way.” – St. Francis of Assisi “The soul hungers for God, and nothing but God can satiate it. Therefore Jesus came to dwell on earth and assumed a Body so this Body might become the Food of our souls.” – St. John Vianney “O my God, teach me to be generous, to serve you as you deserve to be served, to give without counting the cost, to fight without fear of being wounded, to work without seeking rest, and to spend myself without expecting any reward, but the knowledge that I am doing your holy will. Amen.” – St. Ignatius of Loyola “The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for what he is sending us

Louisiana earns sixth consecutive Top 10 spot in publication’s rating of best states for business
Sunday, November 8, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
BATON ROUGE — Site Selection magazine recently ranked Louisiana No. 4 in the magazine’s 2015 Top State Business Climate Rankings. It is the sixth consecutive Top 10 ranking for Louisiana in the annual Site Selection report and reinforces the state’s reputation as a top location for business investment and job creation. Just six years ago, Louisiana ranked No. 25. Site Selection bases its business climate ranking on a variety of factors. Half of the score results from a survey of corporate site selectors who are asked to rank the states based on their recent experience of locating facilities in them. The other 50 percent is based on an index that includes total new projects year-to-date, both overall and per capita; state tax burdens on new and established companies; and performance in Site Selection’s annual Top Competitive States ranking. Louisiana ranked No. 2 in 2014 and No. 6 in 2013 for Top Business Climate. Since 2008, Louisiana has secured economic development wins that are resulting in more than 91,000
new jobs, more than $62 billion in new capital investment and hundreds of millions of dollars in new sales for small businesses across the state. Earlier this year, Business Facilities magazine ranked Louisiana No. 3 in the U.S. in its Best Business Climates ranking, and Area Development magazine placed Louisiana No. 8 in its Top States for Doing Business ranking, the fifth consecutive Top 10 ranking for Louisiana in that annual report. Louisiana now places higher in all national busi-
5-A
ness climate rankings than it ever did prior to 2008. In five national business climate rankings – those published by Area Development, Business Facilities, Chief Executive, Site Selection and international location marketing firm DCI – Louisiana now ranks among the Top 10 states in the U.S. Site Selection named Louisiana Economic Development the No. 2 state economic development agency in the nation in May 2015, which reflected the Top Competitive States ranking for 2014 performance.

Consumer alert: what consumers should know about chip cards Consumers are saying farewell to the swipe-andsign credit cards and hello to the new credit and debit chip cards. Attorney General James D. “Buddy” Caldwell says the nationwide switch is well underway. “This rollout is part of a major effort to cut down on fraud and credit card data breaches,” Attorney General Caldwell said. “The new cards offer greater protections for consumers and will help reduce the costs associated with fraud.” Here are five things about the new credit and debit chip cards: The new cards have a small, square metallic chip on the front, which holds payment data and provides a unique code for each purchase. The metallic chip is designed to reduce fraud, including counterfeiting. Instead of swiping the cards, consumers will put it into a reader for a few seconds. Consumers may then have to sign or enter a PIN. But with each transaction, the chip generates a unique code needed for approval.

Public Notice To all customers of Vision Telecommunications Services
The Public Service Commission of Louisiana designated Lafourche Telephone Company, L.L.C. the “Eligible Telecommunications Carrier” for its service area for universal service purposes. The goal of universal service is to provide all citizens access to essential telecommunications services. Lafourche Telephone Company, L.L.C. provides the supported service — voice telephony service — throughout its designated service area with single line rates starting at $15.78 per month for residential customers and $39.20 per month for single business line customers. This supported service includes: Voice grade access to the public switched network; Minutes of use for local service provided at no additional charge; Access to emergency services provided by local government or other public safety organizations, such as 911 and enhanced 911, to the extent the local government in Lafourche Telephone Company’s service area has implemented 911 or enhanced 911 systems; Vision would be pleased to provide you with specific rates for your area upon request.
Because the security code is always changing, it’s much more difficult for someone to steal and use the code. So what does the new rollout mean for consumers and their financial information? It simply marks the shift of the blame for fraudulent transactions from credit card companies or banks to the retailers. Attorney General Caldwell cautions, however, that the chip does not stop lost or stolen cards from being used in stores or online. So it’s a good idea for consumers to still guard their card information closely, and check statements for suspicious activity. Also, be mindful of scammers who may be trying to take advantage of the millions of consumers who haven’t yet received a chip card. “Scammers are emailing people, posing as their card issuer. The scammers claim that in order to issue a new chip card, you need to update your account by confirming some personal information or clicking on a link to continue the process,” Attorney General Caldwell said. Attorney General CaldVision also offers qualified customers Lifeline service. Lifeline is a nontransferable, federal benefit that makes monthly telephone service more affordable on one wireless OR one home telephone, but not both. Based on the income-related eligibility criteria described below, you may qualify for this program. This means you may receive a monthly credit for your voice telephone service. This Lifeline service also includes toll blocking to qualifying customers without charge. The current discount provided under the Company’s Lifeline service is $9.25 per month for each month that the customer qualifies. To receive this discount, an individual, a dependent, or someone in the household must participate in one of the following federal assistance programs: “Medicaid; Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps; Supplemental Security Income; Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8); Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program; National School Lunch Program’s free lunch program; or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.” Or, the total household income must be at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines. well stresses that there is no reason your card issuer needs to contact you by email, or by phone, to confirm personal information before sending you a new chip card. Do not respond to an email or phone call
that asks you to provide your card number. Banks and card issuers have been sending out new credit and debit chip cards, and the rollout will continue through 2016.

An older couple entered a burger joint. The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink. When the food arrived, he unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking, “That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.” As the man began to eat his fries, a young man came
to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said, “No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.” Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked, “What is it you are waiting for?” She answered, “The teeth.”
