Global oil impact: Who’s hurting, happy, hopeful JONATHAN FAHEY AP Energy Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — Oil’s plunge is spreading both pain and gain across the globe. The price of a barrel has fallen by about half since June, punishing the economies of some major exporters. Russia’s currency has nose-dived, for instance, and investors worry Venezuela could default on its debt. For countries that consume a large amount of the world’s oil, it’s a different story. The world’s four biggest economies — U.S., China, Japan and that of the European Union — all benefit from lower oil prices. “Economically this is a good thing for the U.S., it’s a good thing for Europe, it’s a good thing for China and it’s a good thing for most consumers,” says Sarah Ladislaw, director of the energy and national security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Whether the price plunge ultimately helps or harms the global economy depends on how low oil prices fall, how long they stay low, and whether they trigger political upheaval that interrupts trade or spooks investors. Parish signs contract for solid waste collection
Residents will receive new 95-gallon wheeled trash cart
Officials with Lafourche Parish Government have announced a fiveyear agreement with Progressive Waste Solutions of LA, Inc. (PWS) for solid waste and disposal services for the unincorporated areas of Lafourche and towns of Lockport and Golden Meadow. The contract, effective January 1, will see PWS providing semi-automated collection services for the above areas through 2019. All of the parish’s current solid waste customers will receive a 95-gallon wheeled cart. The distribution of these carts will take place between January 1 and March 31, 2015, during the transition from manual to semi-automated collection. The new pick up system, considered one of the most-efficient in use today by a number of industry experts, offers several benefits such as quieter operation, reduction in windblown litter, and the ability to roll the cart versus carrying garbage to the curb. According to the Department of Solid Waste’s Manager Jerome Danos, residents will simply roll the cart to the curb where a garbage truck featuring an attachment arm will lift the cart, “tipping” the contents into the truck before returning the empty cart back to the curb. BRIEF Police departments on alert after NYC cops killed
NEW YORK (AP) — Big-city police departments and union leaders around the country are warning the rank and file to wear bulletproof vests and avoid making inflammatory posts on social media in the days after a man ambushed two officers and shot them to death inside their patrol car. The slayings of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn heightened fears about the safety of law enforcement officials nationwide, though there is no evidence any threats are imminent. The gunman, 28year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, had vowed in an Instagram post to put “wings on pigs as retaliation for the slayings of black men at the hands of white police. Brinsley was black; the slain New York Police Department officers were Hispanic and Asian. Investigators are trying to determine if Brinsley had taken part in any protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, whose names he invoked in his online threat, or simply latched onto the cause for the final act in a violent rampage. The slayings come at a tense time as police nationwide are being criticized following Garner’s death in a New York officer’s chokehold and Brown’s fatal shooting in Ferguson, Missouri. Protests erupted in recent weeks after grand juries declined to charge the officers involved. __________

June 8 deadline set for BP settlement claims
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — People and businesses who lost money because of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill have until June 8 to file claims. The deadline doesn’t apply to seafood-related businesses. BP PLC made separate settlements for medical claims and for seafood-related business claims A notice last week on the claims center’s website says the deadline for other economic loss claims is six months from Dec. 6, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear BP’s appeal. The London-based oil giant argued that lower courts misinterpreted settlement terms, putting BP on the hook to pay inflated and bogus business claims. According to the claims office website, more than 203,000 claims had been submitted by Friday. That includes nearly 89,700 businesses claiming economic loss. __________
Man kills self in police chase, injuring couple
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A man wanted in Oklahoma on kidnapping, robbery and other charges killed himself during a police chase, causing his truck to hit a car and seriously injure an elderly couple, police said. The chase began when investigators learned that 30-year-old Damian Pea may be in Shreveport. Authorities found him Thursday night in a pickup truck at a convenience store, Shreveport police Cpl. Breck Scott said. They tried to arrest him but he got behind the wheel and sped off. During the chase, police said Pea shot himself in the head. His 2005 Nissan pickup truck slammed into a 2013 Ford driven by Clayton Weaver, 81, of Shreveport, injuring him and his wife, Linda Weaver, 78. Pea was wanted in Oklahoma County on charges including kidnapping, eluding police officers,
robbery and burglary, The Times reported. The Weavers were being treated at University Hospital in Shreveport, where KSLA said Linda Weaver was in critical condition Friday and her husband in stable condition. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office said Pea died from a small-caliber bullet wound. Police found a handgun in the pickup truck. __________
Joe Cocker dies at 70

Leg lamp stolen from New York store’s display
NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (AP) — Who took the leg lamp belonging to Ralphie’s “Old Man from a New York store’s annual tribute to “A Christmas Story? The owner of the Yankee Spirits liquor store in North Tonawanda says his annual window display honoring the holiday classic includes memorabilia from the 1983 film, including several versions of the nowiconic leg lamp. The store’s surveillance video shows a man in a gray hoodie and sunglasses walking into the store and glancing around before he grabs a large leg lamp and leaves. Store owner Gary Brennan tells Buffalo’s WIVB-TV even his customers are angry about the theft. In the movie, Ralphie’s father wins a prize that turns out to be a garish lamp in the shape of a woman’s leg in a fishnet stocking. Ralphie’s mother “accidentally breaks it, leaving the Old Man heartbroken.

Anyone convicted of a DWI offense while their driver’s license is suspended because of another DWI offense will face automatic prison time. Lafourche Parish is also a “no refusal all the time parish, meaning if a suspected drunk driver refuses a Breathalyzer test, deputies will seek a search warrant to have that person’s blood tested. Ho! Ho! Ho! Or Bah! Humbug! It’s still Christmas Eve By Leroy Martin
Today is Christmas Eve, a worldwide gala for Christians everywhere. This column is about celebrating Christmas, leaving the religious part in the very capable hands of my fellow columnist Rev. Wilbur Todd. For forty years, from 1947 to 1987, I spent every Christmas Eve on a bandstand somewhere between Houston, Texas and Mobile, Alabama, but mostly in Louisiana. The last 26 years with Vin Bruce and the Acadians, a partnership that lasted through good times and bad, prosperity or privation and rain or shine. (That covers about everything). In the band’s final years we made our last stand at the Stagecoach Lounge in Galliano. Unlike General Custer, Vin and I survived, for now, but some of our musician friends did not … Harry Anselmi, Dudley Bernard, L.J. Foret, Les Domangue and Gene Rodrigue, just to name a few. Today the Stage Coach stands closed and abandoned, yearning for the Christmas Eve dance that will never return. Also gone are the Town
Club (La Nige), The Ritz Garden, The Bellevue (later the Safari which was destroyed by fire). In Raceland, it was Tee Mon’s and Sal’s; in Cheniere, the Lovely Inn and the French Casino; in Grand Isle, it was Tony’s and Smithy’s, and in Chauvin, (Tee Caillou), The Rose Room and Bright Star. I played music in them all, many times on Christmas Eve. Oh … what memories! Christmas Eve was always party time. Our wives came along and at midnight the band played Silent Night. We toasted Christmas and were usually paid to play extra hours. In the wee hours of the morning, we rushed home to set up the kid’s presents. They were usually awake and waiting. One time it took Dot and I three hours to set up a cardboard theatrical stage for our son

Perry, while he sat and watched. Our kids knew who Santa Clause was. That present has paid dividends. For his 130th professional production, Perry staged a run of the sold out play, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at the Bayou Playhouse in Lockport, and had to extend it an extra weekend. My wife Dot and I saw it and it was a howl, or as Snoopy would bark it, a “Bow Wow!” A local tradition for many years was “A Bayou Christmas”, an event I had written the theme song for. I sang it every year on opening night and it was such a delightful affair that even my singing couldn’t harm it. The Christmas parades and decorations in various towns and communities still enhance the season. We seldom experience snow, only four times in my life, and never on Christmas, so has Santa to arrive by pirogue hauled by 8 jolly (?) alligators. When it snowed in 1959, my Aunt Sarah said it hadn’t snowed in 60 years. Christmas season delights young and old the whole world over, and what do I hear? Organizations are trying to stop us from celebrating Christmas. I guess they’re upset because being atheists, they don’t have any holidays, so they want to do away with ours. My native land I write about was first populated by Cajuns. Later other races and nationalities added to the mix and they had one thing in common … the desire to celebrate Christmas. The Cajuns had to tame alligators, wild boars and wildcats before they could settle the land, so taming Scrooge and Grinch wannabees who were trying to deny us Christmas would be a piece of cake. I now paraphrase Francis P. Church, the author of “Yes, Virginia”, (sorry F.P.). “No Santa Clause? A thousand years from now, nay Evangeline, ten times ten thousand years from now, Christmas will still gladden the hearts of mankind, and Cajuns, too. Yes Evangeline, there IS a Santa Clause.” Even taking religion out of the equation, how could anyone not take pleasure in the story of Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, the stable, the star, the angels and the three wise men? No author, no matter how great could have imagined such a story, so let it be. MERRY CHRISTMAS and bye now, or as many merchants would like me to end this column, BUY now!

After clicking on the link in the top blue navigation bar at lafourchegov.org, the user is prompted through a series of easy-tofollow steps that gains them immediate access to the topics of most importance to them. These customizable updates include, but are not limited to; news and press releases, road and bridge closures from the Department of Public Works, public meeting notices, and emergency updates from our Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Users can also choose to be notified of bid openings, government office closures, job postings and event calendar updates. “As a parish administration, this seemed like a logical step to eliminate redundancies in how we transmit information to the public,” parish spokesman Thad Angelloz said. “We are currently sending out information to the public using social media as well as Constant Contact and eNotification. Since eNotification is a built-in feature that is part of our revamped website, we want people to unlock the information potential that exists with it.”

South Lafourche ladies fall to Thibodaux in thriller Casey Gisclair Contributing Writer
It felt like a big-game, playoff atmosphere at South Lafourche’s gym last Thursday night as the Lady Tarpons’ girls’ basketball team took the floor against Thibodaux. The stands were packed. The Cajun Crazies (the Tarpons’ student section) were in attendance. And dynamic, dominant players were on the floor – big names like Lady Tigers’ standout Jewel Triggs and South Lafourche guards Caroline Guilbeau and Brinkley Callais. When it was all said and done, the game didn’t disappoint, either – a back and forth classic that saw both teams lead late into the fourth quarter. But when it was all said and done, it was the Lady Tigers who struck the final blow, using timely offense, good free throw shooting and senior leadership to secure a 44-43 win. The loss dropped the Lady Tarpons to 0-1 on district, but neither South Lafourche coach Rainie Terrebonne nor Thibodaux coach Damon Robinson think that there is reason to panic in Galliano. “The Thibodaux game was a close game, Terrebonne said. “We played a good Thibodaux team on Thursday night. Our girls played well. Our players never gave up and fought to the end. We missed a lot of free throws and layups and we came up short.

“They have no reason to hang their heads – that’s a really good South Lafourche team, Robinson said. “I’m so proud of my ladies. We came into the absolute hardest place to win in this district, bowed their necks and walked out with a hardfought win. This is the best we’ve played all year. Things started hot for the Lady Tarpons, who rode precise early shooting to a 14-6 lead midway through the first quarter. But anytime South Lafourche had a run, Thibodaux answered – and vice versa, which pulled the game into the fourth quarter with South Lafourche up 36-33. In the fourth quarter that continued, but Triggs (16 points) and her teammates made just enough plays offensively to go ahead late and hang on for the win. Down the stretch, South Lafourche tied the game, but couldn’t take the lead because of a slew of turnovers and missed free throws. On the opposite end, the Lady Tigers made the most of their opportunity to earn the win. “We practice free throws at practice every day, Terrebonne said. “On Thursday night, our free throws just weren’t falling. The good news for the Lady Tarpons is that the loss didn’t linger on the team’s spirits. Just 24 hours after the Thibodaux game, South Lafourche traveled to Morgan City and beat the Lady Tigers 65-59. At press-time, that makes South Lafourche 15-3 on the year. “I knew our girls would be able to bounce back from our close loss, and we did that on Friday night against Morgan City, Terrebonne said. “Every game we play, we get better. ___
Tarpon boys struggle to win close ones at Ellender
On the boys’ side, South Lafourche’s week was defined by an inability to win close games. The Tarpons took part in the threeday, three-game Ellender Tournament this past weekend, posting an 0-3 record on the weekend to fall to 36 on the season. It wasn’t always poor play that plagued South

Lafourche’s efforts. The Tarpons lost a close, heartbreaking game to Holy Cross on Thursday night, falling 66-64 in a game decided in the final minutes. After being blown out by Ellender 87-55 on Friday night, South Lafourche lost another close one on Saturday afternoon, squandering a halftime lead in a 55-48 defeat at the hands of Covenant Christian Academy. The Tarpons played Morgan City at home on Tuesday with no score available at press time. They will return to the floor this weekend at the E.D. White Tournament. ___
Central Lafourche boys remain competitive
South Lafourche’s experience at Ellender wasn’t pleasant. But Central’s stay at the Houma-based tournament wasn’t too bad. The Trojans beat South Terrebonne 65-57 on Thursday night in the opening round before easily cruising past Assumption 82-59 in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket. Central Lafourche fell 75-63 to host Ellender in the finals, but the 2-1 weekend moves the Trojans to 93 on the young season. All three of the Trojans’ losses in 2014-15 have come at the hands of the Patriots, who are 11-4 and are one of the best teams in the Houma-Thibodaux area.
“You can always get better, but as a team, I think we’re competing and we’re playing really hard, Central Lafourche coach Mark Sanders said. “Ellender is a really good team, so they deserve a lot of credit. Had we made more key plays late, the game would have been closer than that. Like the Tarpons, the Trojans will take the floor this coming weekend at E.D. White. They open district play on Jan. 6 at H.L. Bourgeois. ___
Lady Trojans struggling
The new season has been kind to the Trojans’ men, but the ladies have had a hard time finding success. The school’s girls’ basketball team sits at 2-9 through 11 games after losing 57-54 to South Plaquemines this past week. The Trojans have now lost six-straight games dating back to the team’s last win – a 49-40 victory over New Orleans Military and Maritime. The Trojans are also a winless 0-2 against Class 5A competition this season – most of their games having been played against Class 1A or 2A foes. The Lady Trojans opened district play at home against Hahnville on Monday night with no score available at press-time. From there, they will travel to take on Thibodaux on Dec. 29.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — As Jimmy Graham came down with a catch over the middle with his feet just short of the goal line, the star tight end began writhing in an effort to find just enough leverage to force his way through two Atlanta defenders and into the end zone. Short of using the type of goal-line technology employed in certain soccer and tennis matches, it may be tough to know if Graham did enough to score before safety Kemal Ishmael ripped the ball loose and made a momentum-swinging fumble recovery. And regardless of how long debate rages, it won’t change the fact that New Orleans lost the game, 30-14, and was eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday. “Did I think it was a score? Yes, Saints coach Sean Payton said. “It looked pretty clear and yet — look — it is what it is, right? ... It’s disappointing. Atlanta (6-9) next
meets Carolina (6-8-1) for the NFC South title next week in the Georgia Dome. The Saints (6-9) are left with an anticlimactic visit to Tampa Bay after losing five straight at home in one season for the first time since the 1980 1-15 team. Graham’s forward progress appeared to have been stopped by safety Dezmen Southward and Ishmael before the ball came loose, but that was not reviewable. One replay angle showed that the ball may have broken the plane of the goal line, and the Superdome crowd roared when it was shown on large video boards. However, referee John Parry could not find evidence conclusive enough to overturn the call. Parry’s announcement spawned a cascade of boos from anxious Saints fans, whose team remained down 20-7 with its playoff hopes fading. See Saints Page 6-A

From 5-A
“There was nothing clear and undisputable to make a change to the ruling from the field, Parry said. Graham was not present when locker rooms were opened to reporters. Southward said he never had a good look at whether Graham got in. “I was too busy putting my face in his ribs. I was just trying to keep him out, Southward said. “All that credit goes to Kemal, obviously coming in and not quitting on the play. Brees said he thought Graham scored, calling the consequences of the ruling, “huge. While the play was a momentum changer, the Saints might have lost anyway. The Saints committed three turnovers in the fourth quarter and were eliminated officially with Carolina’s victory over Cleveland. New Orleans still had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final three minutes, but Robert McClain’s interception in Saints territory set up a Falcons field goal.
Payton thought his defense was “good enough against Atlanta’s respected offense, adding, “Offensively, we weren’t good enough. Atlanta sacked Brees five times. Brees finished 30 of 47 for 313 yards and one touchdown to Graham, which pulled the Saints as close as 20-14 with 5:48 to go. Brees was also intercepted by Desmond Trufant on a fourth-down pass in the first half. In the final seconds, Osi Umenyiora returned Brees’ fumble for an 86yard TD, turning and waving goodbye to Atlanta’s long-time rivals as he trotted downfield. The result brought forth a devastating realization for the Saints, who’d sought a fifth playoff berth in six seasons. “As we walk out of this stadium, every person you see, you feel like you let that guy down today, and that’s tough, right tackle Zach Strief said. “We deserve it. We got exactly what we deserved. Seeking to fire up the home crowd in a crucial game, the Saints changed their introductions, turning

were short-lived as the Falcons scored the next 20 points. “It’s disappointing to know that with two games left we controlled our own destiny, Brees said. “If we win we’re in, and we were not able to do that. ___
Mistakes prove costly for Saints missing the playoffs AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL
BRADLEY HANDWERGER Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A day after being eliminated from the playoffs with a 3014 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, it didn’t take long for New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton to point out the reason. Payton regularly calls the turnover stat the most important in the game. It was against Atlanta, with the Saints committing four of them. For the season, the Saints are minus-11 in turnover margin. “You really just keep yourself from having an opportunity to win a game, Payton said. “That’s something that I obviously have to look closely at. That close look will come in the offseason. Payton said Monday there wouldn’t be any wholesale changes in how the Saints approach the season-ending game at Tampa Bay on Sunday. Those who have played a role in New Orleans going 6-9 will carry a similar responsibility against the Buccaneers, a 2-13 team in position for the No. 1 pick in the draft. “We’ll have our best guys out there and preparing and doing everything we would normally do if we were playing for a playoff spot, Payton said. “It won’t be a bit different. That means if the Saints finish 7-9, they’d have to eliminate the costly mistakes going into next season. And besides turnovers, the losses have piled up for a myriad of other reasons. The offense scored only 24 points in the final two home games of as the Saints finished with a fivegame home losing streak. The Saints haven’t allowed as many sacks as in 2013, when they gave up 37, but the ones they have given up this season have played a part in the inconstant play. Against Atlanta, which entered last in the league in
sacks, the Saints allowed a season-worst five. New Orleans’ defense didn’t hold up when it needed to in key situations. While the Saints have forced 15 fumbles, they have only recovered five of them. A group that finished No. 4 in the NFL last season is ranked 31st in yards allowed. The Saints are 30th in the league on third downs and have given up at least 400 yards seven times. “We rarely put together a complete game — offense, defense and special teams, tight end Benjamin Watson said. New Orleans has one more opportunity to put together that complete game. Though Payton said preparation will be similar to any other week, it would be easy for the players to lose focus before heading into the offseason. Those in the locker room on Monday said getting ready for the Buccaneers won’t be a problem, however. “You can’t just sit around and feel sorry for yourself all day, linebacker Parys Haralson said. “The season didn’t go the way you wanted to, but you’ve got this last game right here to go and still get to do what you love to do. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

Impact
From 1-A
Recently, the global price of oil traded near $61, down 47 percent from its high for the year of $115. That drop removes nearly $5 billion a day in revenue from the global oil industry — and reduces costs for consumers. The prices of bonds of some state oil companies and developing nations have fallen. And a possible recession in Russia next year could hinder European economies in their recovery. But the U.S. stock market is trading near an all-time high, helped by some of the best employment and wage growth since the Great Recession. THE HURTING: RUSSIA, VENEZUELA, NIGERIA Western sanctions against Russia were already pressuring the ruble when oil prices plunged, accelerating the currency’s decline. A move last week to help the state-owned oil company Rosneft meet debt obligations sent the ruble down even further, raising concerns about a run on banks as Russians fled to stores to buy expensive goods before prices rose. Oil and gas sales account for nearly 70 percent of Russia’s export revenue. If oil prices stay near $60, the Central Bank said the Russian economy could contract by nearly 5 percent next year. Even at $80 a barrel, the Russian economy could still shrink by 0.8 percent. Like Russia, Venezuela’s economic problems predate the decline in oil prices. Venezuela is even more dependent on oil revenues, though — they account for 95 percent of the country’s exports. The price of Venezuelan bonds has plummeted in recent days as investors worry about a default, a move that could trigger political upheaval. Last week Nigeria’s finance minister trimmed the country’s 2015 budget by $3 billion, or 12 percent, because of lower oil prices. THE HAPPY: U.S., WESTERN EUROPE, JAPAN, CHINA
The world’s biggest economies are also the world’s biggest oil users. Lower prices for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel helps boost those economies by giving consumers more money to spend and businesses more money to invest. Lower gasoline prices will save the typical U.S. household $550 next year, the Energy Department predicts. Shares of airline companies and shippers like UPS and FedEx have soared in recent months. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said Wednesday that the decline in energy prices is “likely to be a net positive for the U.S. even if it decreases domestic drilling activity, because the country remains a net importer of oil. Consumers in China, Japan and Europe spend a lower portion of their income on energy, so a cut in energy prices doesn’t go quite as far, although it still stimulates their economies. There’s a catch for Japan, however. Falling oil prices could hamper efforts to trigger inflation in an effort to overcome economic stagnation. THE HOPEFULS: BRAZIL, COLOMBIA, MEXICO Ambitious plans to boost oil production in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico will almost certainly be pushed back. Brazil’s oil industry was already reeling from a corruption scandal at the nation’s state-controlled oil company, Petrobras. Also, the country’s considerable oil reserves are expensive to exploit because they sit so deep under the ocean floor. Low oil prices could further reduce the incentive to drill there. Colombia’s oil industry has made major improvements in recent years. While it hasn’t discovered huge oil fields yet, it has increased production. Now, the Colombian peso has fallen, and oil exploration will slow. After years of declining production, Mexico reformed its constitution to allow foreign companies to operate in the country. The country is thought to have considerable untapped reserves both onshore and offshore. Now, though, global oil companies might delay or seek better contract terms. “People want to get into Mexico but they won’t pay just anything to do it, Ladislaw says. THE HOLDOUTS: SAUDI ARABIA, IRAN, IRAQ OPEC’s biggest producers remain very profitable at low oil prices because the cost to produce oil there is far below even current oil prices. Still, government budgets were set assuming much higher oil prices. The U.S. Energy Department expects oil revenue from OPEC members to fall to $446 billion in 2015, a 36 percent decrease from

2014’s expected revenue. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait have large foreign reserve funds that will help them withstand periods of low prices, though they may still trim spending in response to low prices. Iran and Iraq will face tougher challenges. Iraq is trying to fend off Islamic insurgents and rebuild its economy. Iran is struggling under the weight of western sanctions imposed over its nuclear program. Economy From 1-A
that the U.S. economy is steadily strengthening and outshining most others around the world. The Commerce Department on Tuesday sharply revised up its estimate of third-quarter growth from a previous figure of 3.9 percent. Much of the increase came from consumer spending on health care and business spending on structures and computer software. It was the fastest quarterly growth since the summer of 2003, and it followed a 4.6 percent annual growth rate in the AprilJune quarter. Most analysts think the economy is slowing to an annual rate of around 2.5 percent in the current October-December quarter. And they foresee growth around 3 percent in 2015. That would still be the strongest expansion since the economy grew 3.3 percent in 2005, two years before the Great Recession began. The 2007-2009 downturn, the worst since the 1930s, cost millions of people their jobs. Since then,
the economy has struggled to regain full health. Even after the recession officially ended in June 2009, the economy has turned in tepid growth averaging 2.2 percent annually. But many economists think growth is set to accelerate as more businesses have grown confident about hiring. The country is on track to have its healthiest year for job growth since 1999. In November, employers added 321,000 jobs, the sharpest onemonth increase in three years. With more people working and having money to spend, solid gains are expected in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the economy. For the third quarter, consumer spending grew at a 3.2 percent rate, the best showing this year and a full percentage point higher than the estimate the government made a month ago. That upward revision was driven by higher spending on health care. Business investment spending rose at a 7.2 percent annual rate, 2.1 percentage points more than the government’s previous estimate. Much of the new strength came from investment in structures and computer software. The estimate released Tuesday was the government’s third and final look at third-quarter growth in the gross domestic product — the value of all goods and services produced in the United States.
Louisiana employers will pay lower workers’ compensation rates in 2015 Wednesday, December 24, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Louisiana employers will pay 2.4 percent lower rates for workers’ compensation coverage in 2015, the second consecutive year of rate reductions for employers in the state. The Louisiana Department of Insurance approved the lower rates for 2015 at the recommendation of the National Council of Compensation Insurance, a nationwide industry association that represents the interests of workers’ compensation providers. Last year, the NCCI recommended a 5.1 percent Louisiana rate reduction, which took effect earlier this year. The 2.4 percent rate cut will take effect May 1, 2015. “This is just more great news for anyone working or doing business in Louisiana, said Curt Eysink, executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission. “Our workplaces are becoming safer all the time, and that’s making it easier for employers to afford workers’ compensation coverage for their employees. The NCCI recommended the lower rates because of workers’ compensation claims being filed in Louisiana and lower associated costs for

providers that operate here. The rate announcement comes a week after the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Louisiana ranked second out of 41 states and the District of Columbia for the incidence rate of non-fatal work-related injuries and illness. A key measure of workforce safety, the incidence rate has improved each year in Louisiana since 2009. Workers’ compensation premiums paid by employers in Louisiana will come down an average of 2.4 percent. Rate reductions will vary by industry as follows: ¡ Manufacturing – 2.7 percent. ¡ Contracting – 2.0 percent. ¡ Office and clerical – 0.7 percent. ¡ Goods and services – 2.8 percent. ¡ Miscellaneous – 3.9 percent. The LWC offers free consultation services to help businesses improve workplace safety. Employers can arrange a confidential, comprehensive safety and health survey from trained workplace safety consultants. To request a free consultation or workplace safety visit, call the LWC at 1-800-201-2497.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going to battle. Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves shall never die a sudden death or be drowned or shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail so be sure you really want what you ask. AMEN ________________________

Arrest reports
Wednesday, December 24, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
A blonde went to the appliance store sale and found a bargain. “I would like to buy this TV,” she told the salesman. “Sorry, we don’t sell to blondes,” he replied. She hurried home and dyed her hair, then came back and again told the salesman, “I would like to buy this TV.” “Sorry, we don’t sell to blondes,” he replied. “Darn, he recognized me,” she thought. So she went for a complete disguise this time, haircut and new color, new outfit, big sunglasses, then waited a few days before she again approached the salesman. “I would like to buy this TV.” “Sorry, we don’t sell to blondes,” he replied. Frustrated, she exclaimed, “How do you know I’m a blonde?” “Because that’s a microwave,” he replied.
