Cut Off man killed in Lafourche Parish crash

Council disagrees on where asphalt should be stored

It’s back …

Louisiana State Police say a 29-year-old Cut Off man died in a single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 308 in Lafourche Parish Wednesday evening. The investigation into the crash revealed that a 2003 Ford F-250, driven by Tyler Cheramie, was traveling north of LA 308 Wednesday night when for unknown reasons, crossed the centerline, ran off the road and hit a utility pole and a driveway culvert. Deficit-closing plan from Gov. Jindal delayed until Feb. 20

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration has pushed back to mid-February the release of its proposal to close a $103 million budget deficit. Jindal administration spokeswoman Meghan Parrish said Thursday that the proposal to rebalance this year’s $25 billion budget will be presented to lawmakers at a Feb. 20 hearing for their consideration. A day earlier, the Republican governor had said lawmakers would receive the deficit-closing plan this week for a planned Feb. 6 hearing. See Jindal Page 5-A

Trivia Night’s back and participants are encouraged to form teams and register now as space will determine how many teams will be accepted. This year, Trivia Night will be held at the Larose Civic Center. Registration forms can downloaded from the Larose Civic Center’s website, bayoucivicclub.org, or by calling the office at (985) 693-7355. This team celebrates getting a correct answer at a past Trivia Night.

Get your teams ready … Trivia Night’s back! Marc C. Kimball Contributing Writer

Friends of Special Citizens and the Bayou Civic Club are teaming up to continue an 18-year tradition of fun, fundraising, and excitement! Trivia Night is back after taking a one-year hiatus. This great event is being held March 28th at its new home, the Larose Civic Center. “We didn’t have Trivia Night last year,” says Louis Griffin, founder of Friends of Special Citizens. “It’s a lot of work putting together such a great event enjoyed by so many people, and last year my health wasn’t so great.” Griffin is a perfectionist and knows planning, organizing and putting on such a large event can take its toll. “There is so much stress and too much pressure! I am a perfectionist and want to put on the best possible show we can,” he adds. “People attend the event and come back if they have a good time and we make money for Friends of Special Citizens.” Trivia Night has morphed into a huge event and is the only fundraiser for the non-profit. In its first year, Trivia Night was held at The Center with only 13 teams paying a $10 entry fee. At its last showing at the Cut Off Youth Center, Trivia Night

boasted 109 teams with a $180 entry fee. Every penny earned through Trivia Night goes towards helping special citizens in our community. Funds are used for travel to Special Olympic games, entry fees, hotels, holiday parties at The Center, The Lafourche Arc Plaisance Center in Lockport, and Lafourche Arc Grenier Center in Thibodaux. Funds are also used for field trips and outings. “In May we brought 100 people to Global Wildlife,” says Griffin. “And, twice a year we go to a movie and lunch in Houma.” Nearly 30 years ago, Griffin’s daughter asked him some questions that he just couldn’t answer. “My daughter asked me why she didn’t have a dance at her school, like other kids had at their schools,” says Griffin. “I thought, but couldn’t answer her. I didn’t know why she didn’t have a dance at her school. So, I got on the board at The Center and started making some noise,” he added. And Griffin’s noise was indeed heard by the community! Friends of Special Citizens was formed as 501(c)3 and the activities began! See Trivia Page 5-A

When you drive by the Lafourche Parish Region “C” Barn on Hwy. 308 in Lockport, you will see several piles of ground up asphalt. It may be difficult to believe that these mounds of material might be the source of contention between Councilman Daniel Lorraine and the parish administration, but because the asphalt comes from streets in Road Sales Tax District 2 (RSDT2), Lorraine is upset over storing the material in Lockport. A portion of the sales tax collected in RSTD2, a taxing district south of the Intracoastal Waterway, is used to fund road, bridge and drainage projects in that district. Lorraine first protested over this issue in a January 13 public meeting, saying that most of the material created when streets in RSTD2 were ground down for resurfacing was trucked to Lockport instead of Golden Meadow. “If I wouldn’t have called the DA’s office, it would all be in Lockport. It’s a different taxing district, and I am uncomfortable with it,” said Lorraine. At Tuesday’s January 28 public meeting, Lorraine introduced a resolution to get a District Attorney’s opinion See Council Page 5-A

The Career Magnet Center will provide additional education to juniors and seniors from South Lafourche, Central Lafourche, and Thibodaux High. The Center will have multiple programs for both students looking for Advanced Placement and core classes for universities and for students looking for a career in a vocational study. Vocational career industry courses at the Center will include Oil and Gas, Cosmetology, Automotive, Culinary, Health Science, and Construction Craft. The Center could essentially give students a more focused education than a traditional high school. Its long-term goal is to help students get a head start on a degree in either a technical or four-year college or even straight into the workforce making a solid income. “Really we want to give them all of the tools necessary to jump start the next phase of life, whether that be in a job or school,” said Director of Secondary Education, Aubrey “Bubba” Orgeron. The Career Magnet Center is currently

under construction along Highway 308 in Lockport and is expected to open August 2015. Its location is almost exactly halfway between South Lafourche High School and Thibodaux High School. The Center is estimated to cost around $15 million dollars. Bus transportation will be provided to students, however students will be allowed to drive themselves if they choose. See Center Page 5-A

Letters and Opinions

An opinion on Eymard Shooting Range and the South Lafourche Levee District

I spent 20 years active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. During my career I was fortunate enough to have spent two years on the All Coast Guard High Power Rifle Team and many years shooting on district teams. I have shot competition from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast, the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. So as you can see I can speak with a bit of experience on the subject. When I was on the All CG Team we were stationed at Cape May, New Jersey. We each fired 250 rounds of .30 ammo a day, 5 days a week. The range was on base, located next to the jetties of the pass connecting the Atlantic Ocean to inland waters. The impact area for the bullets was the water of the ocean next to the jetty. There were no brems. Instead prominently displayed on both sides and at the

outer end of the impact area were signs on pilings stating (DANGER BULLET IMPACT AREA). When I competed twice at the National Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio, the bullet impact area was Lake Erie. This was also prominently marked as the impact area. Both had watch towers to look out for pleasure boats entering the areas. During my entire career of shooting high power rifles, I do not recall even one instance of anyone being injured by a bullet in an impact area. I have had the pleasure of shooting at the Eymard range several times. Mr. Arabie, the Range Master runs a very safe, well-operated range. In my opinion Mr. Curole of the SLLD and Terra Logistics fears are totally unfounded. Timothy S. Torrence Larose, LA

After being hit by car Tampa cat crawls back from grave

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — If cats have nine lives, Bart the black and white feline from Tampa, Florida, has certainly used up one. The Tampa Bay Times reports that when 1-½year-old Bart was hit by a car earlier this month, owner Ellis Hutson was so distraught he couldn’t stand the thought of burying the cat. So he asked neighbor Dusty Albritton to dig a shallow grave. But five days later, on Jan. 21, a matted and injured Bart emerged, meowing for food. Hutson got in touch with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which through the Save-A-Pet Medical Fund will help cover costs of surgery to remove an eye, wire his jaw shut and insert a feeding tube. Bart should recover in about six weeks and he’ll go home with Hutson. ___

Man hid cocaine inside prosthetic leg in his car, police say

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Police say a Delaware drug suspect went out on a limb to transport a stash of cocaine, but he was busted when officers discovered the drug hidden inside his prosthetic leg. Dover Police say 39year-old Marlow Holmes was arrested Monday afternoon during a traffic stop. They said police dogs alerted officers to the presence of narcotics inside the car Holmes had been riding in. During a search of the car officers said they discovered more than 28 grams of cocaine stuffed into the prosthetic leg that Holmes was wearing, and arrested him. Police say Holmes faces charges of possession with intent to deliver cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was jailed, with bond set at $81,000. Police say they kept the drugs as evidence but returned Holmes’ leg. ___

NCIS: New Orleans cast to ride in Orpheus parade

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The cast of NCIS: New Orleans will ride as monarchs in the Krewe of Orpheus parade, which rolls on Lundi Gras, the day before Fat Tuesday.

Stars Lucas Black, Rob Kerkovich, Zoe McLellan and CCH Pounder will join the television show’s creator, Gary Glasberg, in the parade through the city’s streets before Mardi Gras day. Krewe Captain Sonny Borey, who founded the organization with singer Harry Connick Jr., said Tuesday the show has been a great ambassador for New Orleans so it’s only fitting that the krewe honor the stars with a celebrity ride during the parade. Glasberg says they’re thrilled to be participating in the 2015 parade and can’t wait for the experience. The krewe’s black-tie gala after the parade will feature a performance by country singer Dierks Bentley. ___

BP to sell part of its Gulf of Mexico stake to Chevron

NEW YORK (AP) — BP is selling part of its stake in an emerging oil-producing region in the Gulf of Mexico to Chevron, and the two companies, along with Conoco Phillips, will work to develop the fields together. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The joint-development agreement is a way for the companies to try to reduce the cost and risk of exploring and developing large, complex fields in the Gulf’s deep waters at a time of low oil prices. For BP, it allows the company to move some of its recent discoveries closer to production as it continues to work to settle claims resulting from its 2010 oil spill in the Gulf. Under the deal, which spans 24 jointly-held offshore leases, Chevron will replace BP as project operator. ___

Baby goat beheaded; head, twin taken from New Orleans park

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says a baby goat was beheaded and its head and the goat’s twin brother taken from a New Orleans park. The SPCA is offering $1,000 for information leading to conviction of the person responsible. Morgana King says she’d rather think dogs or coyotes killed the 3-monthold pygmy goat, and took its twin. King owns a company that lends out goats to eat weeds and grass. The goat’s body was found Thursday at Brechtel Park on New Orleans’ west bank, where a small number of goats were penned. SPCA spokeswoman Alicia Haefele says King’s husband, Michael King, told investigators the culprits might be teenagers he argued with over the weekend because they were trying to “mess with the goats.”

What a Life!

Sunday, February 1, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Christ’s disciples follow his example, his spirit and his teachings

The word disciple is used 269 times in the New Testament. The word Christian is found only three times, the first time in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 11:26). The New Testament is a book about disciples, by disciples, and for disciples of Jesus Christ. For several decades the Christian churches have not made discipleship a condition for being a Christian. The church should require an individual to be a disciple in order to become a Christian. Our churches today do not require following Christ in his example, spirit, and teachings as a condition for membership. Discipleship is seen as optional. We are not real follow-

ers of Christ if we just sit passively in church on Sunday and then spend the rest of the week going to our work, or school, or even caring for a family, and nothing else. No one can be a Christian “on the sidelines.” Every person has a Christian and moral responsibility to make the world more Christlike. Jesus calls all of us to do ordinary things in a Christlike manner. Everyone must give account of how they carried out this mission before the judgment seat of God. Most of the days of Jesus’ life and those of his followers were little different from ours, engaged in routine, showing love in the ordinary ways. Even John the Baptist had difficulty recognizing the Messiah in his day because of the ordinariness of Jesus’ ministry. Our response to the Lord will often go unnoticed because of its humble, simple style. Some of us may have a hard time with such routines. We would rather experience religious spectacles, or breathe taking conversions, than recognize God’s grace at work in the ordinary. We may feel the need for the spectacular to strengthen our faith. This spiritual hype may be nothing else than a de-

sire of our culture that preaches the benefits of the extraordinary over the ordinary. The popularity of reality TV with its bizarre episodes is an example of people wanting the abnormal instead of the normal. We need to remember the scriptural advice, “by patient endurance you will save yourself.” Some people are tempted to make their motto, “by peak experiences you will save yourself.” St. John of the Cross was one of the most spiritual people ever to have walked the path of discipleship. One day, St. John of the Cross was alone in his room praying when he experienced a vision of Mary. At the same moment, he heard a beggar rattling at his door for alms. He pulled himself away from the vision to tend to the beggar’s needs. When he returned, the vision returned, saying that at the very moment he had heard the door rattle on its hinges, his soul had hung in perilous balance. Had he not gone to the beggar’s aid, she could never have appeared to him again. Jesus’ invitation to his disciples and to us today is still, “Come and experience life with me.” Being a disciple is not a life filled with miracles, or

outstanding successes, or fantastic conversions experienced by a whole group of people. Discipleship means living one day at a time as though Jesus were near: near in time, and near in place. We should witness to our world by our motives,

our speech, our behavior that we follow Christ. An old Roman coin pictures an ox between an altar and a plow. Underneath are the words: “Prepared for either,” sacrifice or service. Jesus thought of him-

self as a servant of God. True followers of Jesus should think of themselves as a servant of Christ, and no more, ready for sacrifice or service. If we were all true disciples of Jesus, we could change our world.

On Friday, January 9, Hugh and Valentine Eymard visited the Shriners Burn Hospital for Children in Galveston, TX, delivering clothing, crocheted hats, scarves, toiletries and other misc. items to the Child Life Center. All items were donated by Friends of the Shriners. While there, Hugh and Valentine participated in a clown party for the children and parents.

Council From 1-A

as to whether the parish can stockpile and or/use materials from RSTD2 outside the taxing district from which it originates. Councilman Jerry Lafont argued the logic of putting the material in Lockport. “I would like to amend the resolution to add that the DA considers that the Region ‘C’ Barn also supplies Phillip Gouaux’s and my district, he said. Lafont said he wanted to make sure the DA was aware of the fact that Region 7 and 8 are part of RSTD2. “They hauled everything completely out of the area from which it came, said Lorraine. “We could use that material for boat launches, pump stations, and even the sides of roads. If you want to stockpile, do it around Hamilton Street (in Larose). Lafont reminded Lorraine that there is a pump station north of Larose that could use the material. He called storing the material in Golden Meadow “a waste of time and effort. “I understand it has to be used in RSTD2. But it is pointless to take a dump truck from Region ‘C’, drive all the way almost to Golden Meadow, pick up recycled material, and drive it all the way back to Hamilton Street, said Lafont. Councilman Aaron Caillouet said the “waste of time would be involving the DA in this tempest. “I am voting no because this is a problem that can be worked out by the parties concerned without wasting the time of the DA, he said. The vote was 8-1 for Lafont’s amendment, Lindel Toups dissenting. The resolution passed 6-3, with Gouaux, Toups, and Caillouet voting nay.

Center and the public further in the near future. “It’s been big, but we still need to continue. So we are probably going to have middle-school kids next year start to come tour the facility to get an idea whether they might want to come here as well as ninth and tenth graders, said Orgeron. Decisions on the running of the Center are already being made in order for students to start taking classes there as early as the next school semester. Furniture orders and technology packets are being evaluated. The current principal of Golden Meadow Middle School, Tim Long, has recently been hired to be become the principal of the Center.

Trivia From 1-A

Since the founding of the non-profit, The Center has held a prom every Spring, complete with tuxedos, corsages and crowning of a prom king and queen. Thirty years of prom! There are pep rallies for Saint’s games, carnival balls and Wii bowling leagues. “We transformed from a sort of ‘baby sitting service’ to a ‘doing something service’ in the way we interacted with our special needs citizens, he says. “Special needs people want to feel worthwhile, they want to feel valued and that makes them feel good. Friends of Special Citizens had sewing machines repaired at The Center. They purchased computers. Things changed at the Center. Griffin’s wife, Patsy was an instructor at The Center for 30 years and was a witness to the

positive changes. When Louis Griffin started Trivia Night 18 years ago, he had his share of nay-sayers. “People told me that it wouldn’t work, says Griffin. “Boy did we prove them wrong. Trivia Night generates $25,000 to $35,000, he adds with a sense of amazement. “I have shown people in Shreveport and Lafayette how to conduct this great fundraiser for their areas and it has even grown and expanded there. This year’s Trivia Night features Senator Norby Chabert and State Representative Jerry “Truck Gisclair as its emcees. Teams are encouraged to come dressed in costumes or funny attire which is sure to make for an interesting evening! Trivia Night features 10 categories with 10 questions each. Teams of six will compete for the top prize — The Championship Team will receive an award and bragging rights. Contestants can feast on jambalaya, white beans, grillades, concession items as well as something to quench their thirst from the cash bar. “We are very excited and honored to be partnering with such a great organization. Friends of Special Citizens is one those great groups working hard in our community for the betterment of others and we are proud to partner with them this year, says Jasmine Ayo, Larose Civic Center Executive Director. “We will feature a 50/50 raffle and silent auction this year to help generate additional funds for the organization. Trivia Night can only expand as big as the building that houses it, so

space is a commodity. Teams of six must preregister prior to the event to ensure a spot in the competition. Forms can downloaded from the Larose Civic Center’s website, bayoucivicclub.org, or by calling the office at (985) 693-7355.

provide specifics about the changes and whether they could lessen cuts. The midyear deficit

stems from falling oil prices. The gap must be closed before the fiscal year ends June 30.

Accident From 1-A

The culvert caused the vehicle to travel through the air and land back down, where the vehicle struck a small tree and a second utility pole, rolling over and coming to rest on its roof. Cheramie, who was not properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Coroner’s Office. Cheramie was the only occupant inside the vehicle during the crash.

Center From 1-A

The Center’s courses will follow dual enrollment with high schools. Students enrolled at the Center will likely be taking four courses at their local high school and three courses at the Center. The Center is the same facility that was mentioned in the Lafourche Parish School Board’s five-yearplan. The School Board recognizes the increased need for skilled workers in technical fields. The Center’s programs align with the “Jump Start diploma pathway, a new state program designed to give high school students career courses and certification in highwage industry jobs. Orgeron also says that the Center will have the space and the flexibility to adjust its courses in the future based on the interests of its students and the needs of society. “We want a variety to appeal to kids, and to give them opportunities for after high school, said Orgeron. The communication and coordination between the Center and the high schools has been a major focus these past few months. Orgeron and other coordinators have been meeting with the three high school’s parents, faculty, counselors, and students. Counselors are encouraged to promote the possible potential the Center holds for students. The meetings with the high school students are especially important to receive their input on what courses students would be most interested in. Orgeron plans on increasing communications between the

La. jobless rate rises even as job totals hit record highs Sunday, February 1, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

JEFF AMY Associated Press

Louisiana’s economy keeps creating jobs, but it can’t keep up with the state’s growing workforce. The state’s unemployment rate rose in December for the eighth straight month, to 6.7 percent from 6.5 percent in November. Louisiana now ties for the sixth-highest jobless rate among the states. But at the same time, the state hit new all-time highs for jobs, as measured two different ways. People saying they had a job rose by 9,000 to nearly 2.05 million. A separate survey shows employer payrolls rose by 7,000 to 1.99 million. The jobless rate rose, though, because the number of job seekers grew faster than the number of jobs. The report counted 146,000 unemployed Louisianans in December, above 142,000 in November and 135,000 in December 2013. Both sets of figures — adjusted to cancel out seasonal changes — were released

Tuesday by the U.S. Labor Department. “This growth, sustained over many months, represents thousands more opportunities for people in Louisiana, Louisiana Workforce Commission Executive Director Curt Eysink said in a written statement. “We’re adding jobs at a strong pace, and our labor force is growing to match that increasing demand. Unemployment rates fell in 42 states in December, rose in four and were flat in four. North Dakota retained the nation’s lowest jobless rate at 2.8 percent. The national unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent in December from 5.8 percent in November. It’s down from 6.7 percent in December 2013. The unemployment rate is calculated by a survey that asks how many people are looking for a job. A second survey each month asks employers how many people are on their payrolls, a measure many economists use as their top labor market indicator. Louisiana payrolls rose by 7,000 in December to 1.99 mil-

Mathews man arrested for hunting violations, illegal possession of a firearm

A Mathews man was arrested after he was found hunting deer with a rifle out of season. Leonie Guidry, 26, also faces charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm after a domestic abuse battery conviction. At around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, deputies with the Lafourche Parish Water Patrol were conducting boating safety checks in the area of Company Canal near its intersection with Bayou Blue. Deputies observed a boat turn from Bayou Blue into a pump canal and initiated a stop. They made contact with the boat occupants who were wearing attire commonly used by hunters, and the deputies also observed a rifle on the deck of the boat. Noting that deer season was closed to hunting with such a rifle, deputies began

questioning those on board. One of the boat occupants, Leonie Guidry, stated the rifle belonged to him and that he left his hunting license inside a vehicle at the Lockport Boat Launch. The deputies and the three individuals headed to the boat launch, and upon arrival, they were met by agents of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Through investigation, deputies learned two of the three individuals, Guidry and Casey Loupe, 30, did not have a valid hunting license. They also learned Guidry could not possess any firearms due to a previous conviction for domestic abuse battery. Deputies placed Guidry under arrest and transported him to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux, and Loupe was

age.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.” __________________

Arguing couple

A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?” She leaned over the counter and said, “Burrrgerrr Kiiing.” __________________
