Edwards officially calls special session on budget, taxes
The firstdegree murder trial for a man accused of stabbing a Lockport woman and her two David Brown young daughters has been delayed for the fifth time. David Brown, 38, of Houma, is now set for trial Sept. 12 through Oct. 21. He is charged in the Nov. 4, 2012, deaths of 29-yearold Jacquelin Nieves and her daughters, 7-year-old Gabriela and 1-year-old Izabela. Brown is also accused of raping Jacquelin and Gabriela Nieves and setting the family’s apartment on fire. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. First Assistant District Attorney Kristine Russell said the prosecution and defense asked for this continuance because of new reports from Brown’s attorneys and to allow time for possible medical examinations of Brown. According to the Daily Comet, the trial was originally set for March 10, 2014, but continued four times for reasons including the defense’s lack of money for expert witnesses, a change in judge after the original retired and crime lab issues. Most recently it was scheduled for April 4.

“Jambali, crawfish pie, filet gumbo … son-of-a-gun we gonna have big fun on the Bayou!” … And that’s exactly what occurred last weekend. Big fun, gorgeous weather, and food galore, topped with parade after parade.
But now that the “fun” is over, it’s time to make way for the season of Lent, a forty-day period before Easter when Christians reflect on soul-searching and repentence, and rededicate themselves to their faith beginning with Ash Wednesday. Easter Sunday is March 27.

The jail will be build on Veterans Blvd. next to the current Lafourche Parish Detention Center at 952 LA 3185 in Thibodaux.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, Yates held the first of three subcontractor outreach meetings designed to create interest in the project and disseminate information about the project to the local subcontractor community. Two additional meetings will be held Wednesday, March 9, and Tuesday, April 12. Each meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Hampton Inn & Suites located at 826 North Canal Boulevard in Thibodaux. Each event will present information about the project at the current state of the design, discuss possible ways that attending subcontractors may be able to participate in the project, discussing the procurement process of this subcontracting plan, and record the attendance of all attending subcontractors and insure that their contact information is added to Yates’ database of subcontractors. Yates will use the database to keep interested subcontractors informed as to when the prequalification process will begin, when bid documents will be available, when pre-bid meetings will be held and the status of bid dates. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards officially called Friday for lawmakers to convene Feb. 14 in a special legislative session aimed at stabilizing Louisiana’s finances and closing an immediate budget gap estimated to top $700 million. The Democratic governor’s proclamation sets the dates and parameters for the session, which can run until March 9. The broad outline for the session has been talked about for weeks, but the proclamation set the list of 36 areas that can be considered by lawmakers. Edwards placed tighter limits than Republican lawmakers sought as they pushed back against the governor’s seeking to fill most of the budget holes with tax hikes. With this year’s shortfall and estimates of a nearly $2 billion gap for next year, Edwards said the session’s goal is to end cycles of continuing budget shortfalls. He’s proposing tax increases to raise new money for the treasury, saying that’s the only way to avoid devastating cuts to public colleges and health services. “This is a season of hard choices for Louisiana,” Edwards said in a statement. He added: “This is not the plan I want to submit to the legislature, but unfortunately, these are the options we have to choose from in the short term.” Fewer than five months remain before the fiscal year ends June 30 and the budget must be rebalanced. Larose man dies in utility vehicle crash
A 20-year-old Larose man died last Thursday, Feb. 4, after the utility vehicle he was driving overturned and landed on top of him. At around 6:30 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a utility vehicle crash near the entrance of the Larose Landing subdivision on Hwy. 1. Through investigation, deputies learned Gaven Chouest was operating a Polaris utility vehicle, driving northbound on the shoulder of LA Highway 1. As Chouest turned left into the subdivision, he struck a median on Avalon Avenue, causing the ATV to rotate. Chouest, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, and the vehicle came to rest on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C and members of the Lockport Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene to assist.

11-year-old boy convicted of killing 8-year-old girl
WHITE PINE, Tenn. (AP) — An 11-year-old boy in Tennessee has been found guilty of murdering an 8year-old girl after she and her sister refused to let him see their puppies. WATE-TV reports that Jefferson County Juvenile Court judge Dennis “Will Roach II this week found the boy guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced him to state custody until he turns 19. The Associated Press does not generally identify juveniles accused of crimes. The boy is currently in detention and being evaluated as to where he should be placed, said Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Department of Children’s Services. The boy and 8-year-old McKayla Dyer lived in the same mobile home park in White Pine, Tennessee, about 40 miles outside of Knoxville. McKayla, her 11-year-old sister and another girl, also 11, were playing outside and talking to the boy while he was sitting at his bedroom window on Oct. 3, 2015. He asked the sisters to go get their puppies, the judge’s order says, and when they refused he went and got a 12-gauge shotgun and a BB gun and told the girls he had guns. According to the judge’s description of the events, McKayla laughed at him and responded that the guns weren’t real. The boy “then made certain the gun was loaded, cocked the hammer on the gun and shot the victim just above the heart at a downward trajectory, the judge wrote. The girl fell backward, “quickly lost consciousness, and was later confirmed dead, the judge wrote, adding that three witnesses saw McKayla within one minute after she was shot. “The mother of the child knelt on the ground and picked her up, placing her child in her arms as she passed away. The boy had been trained in firearm safety and had hunted with his father and grandfather, the judge noted. ___

DA’s office donates to Wildlife and Fisheries
The Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office donated eleven truck bed evidence storage chests to the local Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement division on Tuesday, February 2. “We have often donated money and supplies to help the cause of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement in Lafourche Parish since I became District Attorney, and I am glad to continue this fine endeavor, Lafourche Parish District Attorney Camille A. Morvant, II said. “I think this is a good example of agencies working together and directing resources to accomplish a common goal. Accepting the donation Tuesday was Capt. Chuck Comeaux, a 29-year veteran of Wildlife and Fisheries, who echoed that sentiment, noting that his agency has had a great working relationship with the DA’s office and Morvant. Comeaux said he was appreciative of this donation, as well as the other contributions from the DA’s office over the years.

Edwards From 1-A
Republican lawmakers say there’s room for reductions in government spending, but Edwards only included some of their ideas in the special session agenda — though he did include a wide-ranging item that allows for cuts across state agencies. “I have listened to legislators and have drafted a broad call allowing flexibility to consider both cuts and raising money for the state,” Edwards said. “Now is the time for legislators to join with me to resolve these problems.” The agenda includes Edwards’ proposal to tap into $128 million from Louisiana’s “rainy day” fund and to redirect $200 million in Gulf oil spill recovery money earmarked for a lawsuit settlement to instead plug holes in this year’s budget. The governor also will allow lawmakers to consider reworking state contracts and decreasing protections that shield some budget areas from
deep cuts. But most of the items included for debate involve taxes. House Speaker Taylor Barras, R-New Iberia, pledged in a statement to work with the administration on “responsible solutions.” But he noted some items Republicans sought were missing from the session agenda. “While some non-tax items are included, many were anticipating more opportunity to address structural and spending reforms,” Barras said. In a letter earlier this week, the Republican Legislative Delegation urged Edwards to allow lawmakers to consider restructuring Medicaid, state pension systems, state worker health care and criminal sentencing laws, along with government reorganizations. Rep. Lance Harris, RAlexandria, chairman of the House GOP delegation, said Republican lawmakers “are a bit disappointed” that most of those ideas seemed to fall outside the parameters Edwards provided. “We’ll be looking at our

options of how we can affect some savings in government and do what we believe needs to be done first, which is look at costs before we look at the revenue side of it,” Harris said. Lawmakers can consider increasing a wide array of taxes on people and businesses, everything from sales and income tax hikes to boosted taxes on phone service, car rentals, business utilities, room rentals, cigarettes, alcohol, dry cleaning and sports tickets. Certain types of tax breaks can be reworked or eliminated. The session begins at 4 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. New Jail From 1-A
The new jail project is utilizing the Construction Manager at Risk method which entails a commitment by the construction manager to deliver the project within a specified cost through working with the architect to ensure the design fulfills the needs of the facility. The Lafourche Parish Law Enforcement District signed a contract with Yates Construction in November 2015 to be Construction Manager for the project. Yates participated in a vetting process with several interested companies which included Requests for Qualifications, a review by an evaluation team, and a presentation by each company. As announced in September, the team of GraceHebert Architects/ Duplantis Design Group is designing the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex which will be constructed on property located on Veterans Boulevard directly across from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center. Construction is expected to begin this Spring, and plans for a groundbreaking ceremony will soon be announced.

WWII vet begins journey to reunite with wartime girlfriend
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A 93year-old World War II veteran is embarking on a 10,500-mile journey to Australia to visit his wartime girlfriend after more than 70 years apart. It will take Norwood Thomas, who boarded a plane Sunday from Norfolk with his son, two days to reach the country, where he will be reunited with Joyce Morris, The Virginian-Pilot reported. “I’d rather die traveling to Australia than live sitting around at home wondering, ‘What if?’” Thomas said. News media around the globe have printed or broadcast the story, which has gone viral online. “It’s the craziest thing,” Thomas said. “I can’t believe how interested all these people are.” The two first met in London shortly before DDay. Morris was a 17-yearold British girl, whom Thomas remembers as a “pretty little thing,” and he was a 21-year-old paratrooper with the 101st Airborne. “Joyce was special. The one that got away,” Thomas said. “But after the war, my orders to go home came so quick there was no real chance to even say goodbye.” Thomas, who hasn’t seen Morris since 1945, has kept a photo of her ever since. After the war, the pair wrote letters to each other, and Thomas even asked Morris to come to America and be his wife. But somehow Morris misunderstood and thought he’d found someone else. She stopped writing. As time passed, the two went on with their separate lives. They both married other people, had careers and children. Thomas’ wife died in 2001. Morris divorced her husband after 30 years. Last year, Morris asked one of her sons to look for Thomas on the Internet, where she found his name featured in The VirginianPilot newspaper’s D-Day series called “The Lucky Few.”
Thomas and Morris, who is now 88 and nearly blind, recently reconnected via Skype. After their story went public, hundreds of people made donations to help fund Thomas’ trip to Australia, and Air New Zealand arranged the flight. “It’s really touching,” Thomas’ son, Steve Thomas, said of the donations. “We want them to know it worked. He’s
going.” Norwood Thomas said he’s excited to see Morris. “I’m just looking forward to seeing her smile,” he said. “I have no idea if there’ll still be romantic feelings. But at the very least, I’ll get to spend time with an old friend. Just sitting and reminiscing will be wonderful.” ___ Information from: The Virginian-Pilot, http://pilotonline.com

“Cadet, that’s a pelican, not an aircraft!”
trying to adjust to life in the big city of New Orleans in the middle of World War II. Visiting schools civil defense authorities were recruiting young boys and girls to become airplane spotters and, in a patriotic mood I volunteered, was accepted, trained, certified and stationed in the Hibernia Bank building tower from 12 noon to 8 p.m. every Saturday. My job was to identify any aircraft spotted with my trusted binoculars, log and report. I could identify hundreds of planes, ours and theirs, and I’m proud to say that during my command, no enemy plane ever crossed my sight. They wouldn’t have dared! They knew my duty hours from their spies and they avoided my sector knowing I would spot them. Well, that was the scenario in the mind of a 14year old kid trying to do his part in the greatest war of all times.
My “Cajuns in Nashville” story will continue next week but I just had a flash back memory that I must nail down. Memories do not recur in chronological order and sometimes they never come back. Important memories like marriages, births, deaths and graduations are never forgotten, but it’s the insignificant ones that fall through the cracks. Years later you realize they were significant after all, and could interest your readers if, by chance, you just happen to write a newspaper column. Sure, I could have make notes, but in my house, deliberately hiding from me, are hundreds of such notes, daring me to find them. I rather capture and share them when they occur. Leroy, the Airplane Spotter I was 14 years old in 1944, a naïve Cajun boy

Actually I did miss a Piper Cub flying between buildings for which I was reprimanded and the pilot, a rich local playboy, was arrested. We won the war anyway. Oh! Something else! Every shift had two spotters, and my partner was Jerrie Campbell, (not her real name), but the recruiter had misspelled it “Jerry” so they assumed we were the same sex as required. She was a pretty girl about one year older and we became good friends and never reported the error. We discussed movies, school, favorite singers and other teenage activities. She was fascinated by my Cajun stories and accent and since I was just beginning to notice the difference between boys and girls, I was fascinated by her. My Cajun upbringing kept me a perfect gentleman and she was a nice, decent girl. We shared mutual respect and kept our relationship purely platonic. Honest! Really! I decided to keep that part of my life secret, although I did brag many times about how my airplane spotting helped us win World War II, (another secret divulged in my aging life). (Aging? Come on pal, you’ve been there awhile.) Now back to the story about five Cajuns in Nashville. The city was a southern cultured, elite society then known as the “Athens of the south” with its own replica of the Parthenon and hostility for the country (hillbilly then) music crowd that the “Grand Ole Opry” brought to their civilization. City Hall and the powers that be rejected any effort to publicize, advertise or acknowledge the fact that thousands of country folks were packing hotels, restaurants, stores and gift shops every Friday and Saturday biting the hands that added millions to the city’s economy. In not too many years millions became billions and the music industry made them see the light. The city would eventually be named “Music City, U.S.A.” As I said, everything has a price. Troy Martin had my week fully scheduled and it included recording demo sessions, a B.M.I. formal affair, a fried chicken picnic in a beautiful park with his family, interviews for me with a young Ralph
Emery, and my appearance on the “Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree” radio program, which to the country music fan was second only to the “Grand Ole Opry”. Besides that, the presence of five Cajuns did not cause a ripple or commotion and that was all to their misfortune. Nashville never knew what they had missed. Bye now!

Tarpons trump Vandebilt to get redemption Gazette Sports Reports
A total school effort led South Lafourche past the Vandebilt Catholic boys on Thursday night in Galliano. The Tarpons beat the Terriers 54-47 on the floor, riding solid defense and timely scoring to improve to 11-12 on the season. But after the game, coach Brian Callais said it was a total community win, thanks to a slampacked student section that made tons of noise throughout the night to disrupt Vandebilt. “Our students were awesome,” Callais said.
“They were loud, and they supported us throughout the night. They’re the best. They made it a fun, wild environment – a great place for high school basketball games to be played.” It was a huge third quarter that sealed the deal for the Tarps. South Lafourche led 24-21 at halftime – an opening 24 minutes that was back and forth with neither team ever gaining an advantage over the other. But in the third, South Lafourche took complete

control, using smothering defense to surge ahead by 12 points going into the fourth – a 41-29 advantage. In the fourth, South Lafourche kept its lead firm initially, but Vandebilt made a surge in the final three minutes, cutting the deficit to as little as five at one time. But clutch baskets from Shak Dillon and Trevor Rebstock sealed the win for the Tarpons, who improved to 5-2 in the victory. Callais said Dillon and Rebstock were huge. They led the team in scoring and had the lion’s share of the Tarpons’ points. But the coach also lauded the efforts of contributors like John Rogers, Nikali Lombas, Thomas Rousse, Jaydon Cheramie and Matt Bellanger – all of whom he said contributed to a total team win. “We got great effort from everyone on the team,” Callais said. “There’s no way I could be any more proud of the kids for how they played.”
The Tarpons played Ellender on Lundi Gras with no score available at presstime. They travel to take on Assumption on Friday night. ___
Lady Tarpons roaring towards playoffs
The South Lafourche girls’ basketball team didn’t need much time to show that last Tuesday’s sluggish performance against Morgan City was an aberration. Before the boys’ win, the Lady Tarpons picked apart Vandebilt 68-18, dominating the game from start-to-finish in a blowout win. Traya Bruce scored 29 points and made five 3pointers to pace a South Lafourche team, which led 28-4 after the first quarter and then 42-11 at halftime. South Lafourche didn’t let up, owning a 58-13 advantage after the third quarter, before settling the game to its final margin.

They did that, and I think it was a solid showing for us.” Central may have led for most of the game, but it surely wasn’t easy. Carver Meet Carol Boquet
When Carol Boquet was a child, he would listen to his grandfather’s stories about killing ducks for market and enough to bring home to feed his family. His grandfather used duck decoys to bring the flocks into gun range. The decoys of this era were fascinating to Carol. He wanted to know who made them and how they were made. He wanted to know how someone could make something so well that it would fool a flock of live flying ducks. In the early 80s, Carol began taking carving classes taught by Carl Danos. “Since carving with Carl, I have learned a lot about ducks and how to carve life into a block of wood,” he said. Carol has competed in

MEMORIALS
In Loving Memory on Your Birthday
ADRIAN “BOO” LEGENDRE
Sunrise: 2/11/72 Sunset: 7/17/15 We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; For part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Love, Addy, Angelique and Angelle _____________

The WWII Museum hosted Girl Scouts day on Saturday, January 23. Of the many local girls to participate were some from local Brownie Troop 20343. The event offered several activities such as an aircraft identification game, learning about and creating Naval flag signals, doll making and a photo op donning military related props. The girls were able to visit the museum and learn about its significance. The Scouts appreciate the generosity of the museum, but most of all our servicemen and women for their sacrifice to protect our freedom. A week later, he called the Environment Canada Weather Service again. “Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?” “Yes,” the man at Weather Service again replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.” The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Cold Weather
Late last fall, the Indians on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation reservation in Grand Bend asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and

that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the Environment Canada Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold?” “It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,” the meteorologist at the weather service responded. Nicholls football completes 2016 recruiting class
Wednesday, February 10, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Trojans From 7-A
In the third quarter, Thibodaux played its best, butting the Central Lafourche lead to just 4542. But right when Thibodaux got its peak, the Trojans turned it on. Central Lafourche played some of its best defense of the season in the fourth quarter, limiting the Tigers to practically nothing offensively. With stops flowing freely, the Trojans got into the bonus and made enough free throws to put the game away for good. Senior Quindon Charles led the Trojans with 24 points in the win. The Trojans will take on Destrehan at home tonight and will travel to play Hahnville on Friday. ___
Lady Trojans near end of tough season
While the Trojans’ boys enjoyed a win, the Lady Trojans fell 60-31 to a tough, physical Thibodaux squad. The Lady Tigers beat Central’s girls throughout, owning an 11-4 lead after one, a 23-14 halftime edge and then a 43-24 advantage after three quarters. Jessica Loupe scored eight points for Central, which drops to 1-26 on the season.
