Galliano man admits to sexual conduct with three juveniles
Carnival season rollin’ along …
Wild Game Supper set for Thurs., Feb. 26
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Golden Meadow Chief of Police Reggie Pitre announced the arrest of a Galliano man for engaging in sexual conduct Joseph Duplantis with three juveniles. Joseph Duplantis IV, 27, was arrested on Friday and admitted to his involvement in the crimes. Last week, officers with the Golden Meadow Police Department responded to a complaint where a 27year-old male allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with a juvenile. The officers contacted juvenile detectives with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to investigate the claims. Through the investigation detectives learned Joseph Duplantis had engaged in sexual conduct with three juveniles over a four-year period. Following their investigation, detectives obtained warrants for Duplantis’ arrest. See Arrest Page 9-A
Join the hundreds of experienced hunters, amateurs, and the want-to-be hunters and fishermen as they exchange stories of the jungles, the forests, the oceans, and the open fields. They will be telling wonderful stories on Thursday, February 26, and the Larose Regional Park Pavilion will be packed with people who have joined together to enjoy the tastes of the familiar wild game dishes as well as the exotic. The setting is wonderful! Much like a museum, the outer edges of the pavilion will have an exhibit of varied mounted animals hunted in the United States and throughout the world. Many of these mounts are set in wildlife settings. For those who have enjoyed hunting trips and fishing trips, there is always a good story to tell

Topping off the day Saturday will be the Le Krewe du Bon Temps in Larose beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the Krewe of Grand Isle will roll at 1 p.m., with the Krewe of Nereids finishing off the parade-filled weekend at 6 p.m. in Golden Meadow. “You’ve got to know when to say ‘when’”, said Don Dubuc on his Saturday morning WWL radio show — Don Dubuc the Outdoors Guy. He was commenting on a Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries news release about a Galliano man who was cited for catching and keeping more than 20 black drum and 1 redfish, all undersized, in the Pointe-Aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area on Jan. 31st. Every Saturday, Don does a segment on his radio show called “Bad Boys of the Outdoors” in which he features one or more outdoorsmen who have been caught breaking game or fish laws. Saturday, Dubuc featured Rufino Gonzalez-Ibarra, 34, who was cited for See Game Thief Page 9-A

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and many of us use this time of year to think about our loved ones – spouses, family, friends … anyone of whom we want to send a little love. The true origins of Valentine’s Day are not set in stone, as facts have become muddled throughout the centuries. History tells us that during the end of the third century, a Roman priest named Valentine went against the wishes of Emperor Claudius II and married lovers in secret. The Roman Empire was in desperate need of soldiers and Claudius believed that single men were better candidates for the position thus creating the ban on marriage.
Eventually, Valentine was imprisoned, beheaded and later named a martyr by the Catholic Church because he gave up his life for the sacrament of marriage. The Ides of February, or middle of the month, is when his execution took place; thus becoming the time when to celebrate that love had triumphed over all. Greetings for this day of love can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Written Valentines began to appear around the 1400s. Americans, it seems, began to exchange hand-made tokens of love in the mid-1700s. The “Mother of the Valentine”, Esther A. Howland, was the first person to sell mass-produced valentines decorated with lace, ribbons, and pictures, known as “scrap” in the 1840s, according to The History Channel. See Love Page 6-A

Letters and Opinions
A letter to Louisiana citizens and education stakeholders
As members of the State Board of Education (BESE, the “Board of Elementary and Secondary Education”), we have requested a special meeting of BESE to address the concerns of school districts being punished for students who choose to opt out of PARCC testing. Unfortunately, our request was denied by BESE President Chas Roemer. (Six BESE members must agree to a special meeting.) An item has been added to the March BESE agenda; however, we believe the concerns are too significant to delay until March. There are OPT-Out meetings currently being scheduled in communities across our state. We have received numerous emails and phone calls from parents and educators seeking information regarding an opt-out of testing option. Many of the questions asked are valid; yet, school officials, including BESE members, don’t have responses. Education in Louisiana is in a state of confusion. Parents have expressed their concerns and intentions to opt their children out of PARCC testing this spring. Schools MUST not be penalized for a variable they can’t control. There is a solution to this AND BESE can provide the solution. School districts and schools should not be assigned punitive consequences: zeros in 2014-2015 for students choosing not to participate in PARCC tests. There

should be a suspension of letter grades due to the untimely guidance and changes to the assessment guides and the release of practice test items that were received as late as the end of January, 2015. The “build the plane as you fly it” sentiment continues with educators not truly knowing “the destination.” Because this is the first administration of the PARCC assessment in Louisiana, many school officials, educators, and parents have valid fears, particularly, when it is a known fact that there was a 70% failure rate in New York. Why would we disenfranchise our parents, teachers and administrators by saying “No” to a special meeting? We urge you to join with us to encourage BESE to approve a special meeting. Why would a Board refuse to call a meeting to ad-

“Happy Valentine’s Day”
To set the mood for this column, I composed a short poem: Through all years and seasons, I tried to find reasons To gain recognition and earn it. On Valentine’s Day, coming this Saturday I might unintentionally ruin it. I learned very young that cat and rat and boy and toy rhymed, so I started putting such words together. In 7th grade I wrote a poem my teacher liked and I still remember it, but please be merciful and remember, I was only 12 years old The American Farmer In his field he toils, plowing and planting his soil, waiting for crops to grow, the crops that he sweated to sow. He’s the American
Farmer, a man so brave and free. He’s the American farmer, a person like you and me. He’s planting to keep the freedom, the freedom his ancestors won. He’s the American farmer, protecting his daughters and son. Not Longfellow or Poe by a long shot but I got an “A” and my parents celebrated for a week. I gave the farmer several daughters, but only one son to rhyme with won. It’s called poetic license but what did I know then? It was war time and we were all in a patriotic mood. In spite of the poem, we still won the war. In 1952, I was courting my future wife Dorothy Guidry, (61 years and counting), and from Fort Polk with the National
Guard, I wrote her a poem for Valentine’s Day. It was an affectionate satire but dissatisfied after reviewing, I filed and never sent it. I recently found and revalued it and today she will read it for the first time. So will you. I named it “Another St. Valentine Day’s Massacre,” and despite the title, it’s a love poem, I think! It might bring me condemnation or humiliation, but at my age all I fear is the inevitability of the unavoidable fate which awaits us all, and what can I do about it, except sip a good wine, and for better or worse, let Dot read the poem I wrote so long ago, and share it with you: First l declare, my artistic flair, has never had much expectation. If the heart meant for you, I horrendously drew, please accept it with that limitation. Though not orthodox, Hallmark won’t think a lot of the words that I’m trying to say. But honey it’s true, I’m expressing to you that I love you, and will every day. Christmas and Easter and Veteran’s Day, are dates that we always recall. I just don’t think of somebody I love, by a calendar hung on a wall. May I be allowed to not follow the crowd, like cus-

tom tells me that I should do. Some card company will sell one less you see, but I’ll write to you words that I want to. If you’ve set your mind to, that I’m to remind you, I love you on Valentine’s Day. Then I will abide and I’ll go with the tide, but the message I send will be my way. If you as the reader, consider the meter of this poem as lacking emotion, I’m just satirizing, a custom I’m tiring, like commercializing devotion. I’ve never been like a stereotype, and clichés are as trite as can be. But darling I love you, and I only want to, express that thought to you from me. My love will cease never, today and forever, the Fourth of July, Lincoln’s birthday. If gifts you receive, on a Thanksgiving Eve, I’m uniquely courting you my way. I certainly know, that I always can go, to a store for a Hallmark or two. I’ll cherish forever, each card and each letter that I’ve ever gotten from you. I just can’t conform to the standard and norm to express my affection it’s true. Though tedious it be, please accept this from me, as my love, eternal for you. Dot, I still mean it, after all these years, and I dedicate it to you.
The Bulldogs for Christ Club at LCO Middle School visited The Broadway Nursing Home in Lockport in December to spread Christmas cheer and love. Weeks before, the club collected socks, blankets, and personal items for every resident. At several meetings, they also created Christmas cards with messages of love and faith. The students delivered these items to the nursing home and entertained them with Christmas songs. The group spent almost two hours singing and visiting with many residents. Bulldogs for Christ is a Christian club and welcomes all students. This is an annual event for the LCO club. Submitted by Laurel Chiasson

Love From 1-A
As improvements in printing emerged, handwritten cards were replaced. It became easier and cheaper to buy a card from a store expressing the perfect sentiments of love. In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Missouri, began mass-producing Valentine greetings. In addition to cards, flowers and candy became traditional gifts to share. So what makes love last? Two couples that have been married 53 years each shared advice that helped their marriages surpass the half-century mark. Ronald and Elaine Callais of Galliano strongly believe that marriage consists of three people: God, husband, and wife. They feel that their lives together are a work in progress. “Couples must always work at marriage and nip small problems in the bud before they turn into insurmountable issues,â€? said Elaine. “Newlyweds shouldn’t expect to have everything right off. Young couples must work hard to get the things their parents have,â€? Ronald said. Ronald and Elaine have five children: Gavin, Bruce, Lee, Abdon, and ReneĂŠ. While they were growing
up, the family was very close knit: eating, celebrating and working hard together. “Never going to bed angry is what kept our marriage and family strong, said Elaine. Their sentiments seem to be a universal recipe for success. Frank and Joyce Naquin of Thibodaux shared similar advice to newlyweds and all couples who may be struggling during rough times. “Never go to bed angry; learn to share; respect and listen to one another even if you don’t agree; don’t get married unless you are certain you are in love. Possibly the most important thing to do is compromise, Frank and Joyce said. When their children, Connie, Lynne, Frank, Jr., and Troy came along, they made it a point to live and eat as a family. Work ethic was a strong factor in their household, and each member had chores and responsibilities. Frank and Joyce enjoyed a dancing date once each month and played cards with friends, children in tow. Family first has kept them strong throughout the years. The wisdom behind both of these half-century marriages is truly timeless and many lessons can be learned from their stories.

Trojans enjoy huge week Gazette Sports Report
The Central Lafourche boys’ basketball team faced a must-win game this past week against East St. John. With a win, the Trojans’ hopes at winning the District 7-5A Championship would remain alive. With a loss, Central knew they’d need a near-miracle to have any chance to bring home the title. Mission accomplished! The Trojans’ hopes tick on, and the team’s pulse is as strong as it’s ever been. The Trojans topped the Wildcats 65-61, avenging Central Lafourche’s 67-48 loss to East St. John on Jan. 9. The Trojans carried that momentum into Friday night as well, topping crossparish rival South Lafourche in a close, 66-63, hard-fought game between the heated foes. “We were coming off a loss against H.L. Bourgeois, and we needed a big week, and we got it,” Trojans coach Mark Sanders said. “We played a very good game against a very good East St. John team, and we kept ourselves in position to make a charge to the playoffs.” For the second-straight time, the Trojans fell behind East St. John early. The Wildcats led Central by 10 in the second quarter, but the Trojans used a spurt to take control of the game – utilizing a high-pressure defense and transition offense to spark the surge. With the game close throughout the second quarter, the Trojans took control in the third, taking a 51-43 lead into the fourth quarter – an advantage that swelled to double digits midway through the fourth quarter. Not wanting to go down without a fight, the Wildcats led a furious late rally, cutting the lead to a single possession several times in the quarter. But the Trojans iced the win in the final seconds, using solid free throw shooting to get the win. Lionel Batiste scored 22 points in the win. Anfernee Poindexter pitched in 17. On Friday against South Lafourche, the Trojans squandered a 15-point fourth quarter lead and were in a dog fight to the last seconds with a gritty Tarpons’ team led by Trevor Rebstock (22 points) and Kobe Chouest (11 points). But for the secondstraight game, the Trojans made plays down the stretch to ice the win. Quade Williams had 17 points for the Trojans in the win, which improved Central Lafourche to 20-5 and 8-2 in district play. The Trojans will have to do a lot of work this week to roll to 10-2. Central traveled to play Destrehan on Tuesday with no score at presstime. They host Terrebonne on Friday night. While Central Lafourche’s boys got the big wins they were looking for,
the Lady Trojans had a tough week. Central fell 5714 to East St. John last Tuesday and 73-16 to the Lady Tarpons on Friday. They’ll close their season on Friday night at home against Terrebonne. ___ Lady Tarpons keep playoff pace With just one week left in the regular season, the
South Lafourche girls’ basketball team is eyeballing a 25-win season.

Trojans From 7-A
this past Tuesday before hammering the Lady Trojans on Friday by the above-mentioned margin. The wins improved South Lafourche to 23-5 on the season. Entering the final week of the season, the Tarpons traveled to face H.L. Bourgeois on Tuesday night before hosting Destrehan on Thursday. The game with Destrehan will be a rematch of the Lady Tarpons’ 62-55 loss to the Lady Wildcats on Jan. 20 – the toughest test Destrehan has gotten in district play this season. South Lafourche also lost to Thibodaux and East St. John in the first round of district, but rebounded to beat both teams in the second round of games – the

Lady Tigers by 9 and the Lady Wildcats by 14. “Yes for sure,” South Lafourche girls’ basketball coach Rainie Terrebonne said when asked if the Lady Tarpons are eager for a second crack at Destrehan. “We will make adjustments where needed and play hard.” Playing hard is something the Lady Tarpons did in both of their wins this past week. Against Terrebonne, South Lafourche ran out to an early lead and plastered Terrebonne for the second time this year. Against the Lady Trojans, the script was the same, as South Lafourche jumped ahead 27-2 in the first quarter and then 50-8 at halftime. In the second half, Terrebonne played mostly reserves, coasting to the 57-point win. Brinkley Callais led South Lafourche with 19
points. Carolina Guilbeau and Traya Bruce had 15 and 14 respectively. While the Lady Tarpons continue to make a push to the playoffs, the Tarpons’ boys’ are rounding out the season in hopes of spoiling the district standings. The Tarpons fought
Central Lafourche tooth and nail on Friday, falling 66-63 in a hard-fought, competitive game that showed the ‘heart’ that South Lafourche coach Brian Callais has talked about for most of the season. The determination and effort was also on display
last Tuesday night as the Tarpons fell 67-65 against Terrebonne in the secondstraight back and forth battle between the district rivals. Like the SL ladies, the men played H.L. Bourgeois last night, and will play De-

MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing to use $43 million in stopgap funds and nearly $61 million in cuts to close the state’s latest budget deficit this year. The Jindal administration released its budget rebalancing plan Friday. Lawmakers will consider the recommendations on Feb. 20. Jindal wants to shift dollars from a gaming enforcement fund to plug budget holes elsewhere, drain the remaining dollars from a nursing home trust fund and tap into other one-time pools of available cash to lessen the depth of cuts. But cuts also will be spread across most agencies. Only public colleges were spared reductions in this latest round of slashing. The more than $103 million midyear deficit stems from falling oil prices. The gap must be closed before the fiscal year ends June 30.

On Friday, February 6, detectives made contact with Duplantis at his residence, and he was taken into custody without incident. During questioning, Duplantis admitted to his involvement in the crimes. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked on warrants for aggravated rape, molestation of a juvenile, and indecent behavior with a juvenile. He is being held in lieu of $250,000 bond as set by Judge Christopher J. Boudreaux. Chief Pitre said, “These are horrendous crimes, and I hope he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. These young victims have suffered unspeakable harm, but I applaud their braveness to come forward to help bring this criminal to justice. Sheriff Webre echoed Chief Pitre’s comments. “Most people cannot fathom something like this occurring within our community, nor would they want to, said Sheriff Webre. “I, too, thank the victims for their courage to come forward to help put this man behind bars to prevent him from victimizing others.

who helped LWF prosecute 17 deer cases, 10 migratory game bird cases, six turkey cases, three fish cases and two alligator cases. According to a LWF news release, the LOGT board reviewed a total of 40 cases in 2014 of which 67 subjects were apprehended and a total of 218 offenses written in regards to the reviewed cases. LOGT has awarded $358,900 since its inception in 1984. If anyone wants to get involved in reporting violations, LWF offers several ways for citizens to participate in LOGT. Individuals can anonymously call LWF’s 24-hour toll free Operation Game Thief hotline at 1-800-442-2511. Tipsters can also use the tip411 program, texting LWF and their tip to 847411. The “LADWF Tips iPhone and Android apps can be downloaded to one’s phone from the iTunes or Google Play store free of charge. Texting or downloading the app enables the public to send anonymous tips to LWF and lets LWF respond back, creating a two-way anonymous chat. Users of the app or texters can also send in photos to help support their claim and be used as evidence. CitizenObserver, the tip411 provider, uses technology that removes all identifying information before LDWF receives the text so that LDWF cannot identify the sender. LWF says that the LOGT program is funded through private donations, court directed contributions and through contributions from cooperative endeavor agreements with organizations such as the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quality Deer Management Association. Citizens can also support LOGT by making donations. To do so, contact Lt. Will Roberts at wroberts@ wlf.la.gov.

Clean Water Act fines for its role in one of the largest oil disasters in U.S. history. “The majority of Americans understand that BP has not yet paid any civil penalties for its reckless discharge of oil into the Gulf, nor can it claim credit for clean-up costs as if mopping up your mess is the same as fixing the damage it caused. As new scientific studies are published, we learn more and more about the lasting impacts to many species, habitats and industries, said David Muth, director of National Wildlife Federation’s Gulf restoration program.
Animal Shelter manager calls Saturday adoption event “a success
Officials with the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter (LPAS) said its firstever Saturday opening was a success. On Feb. 7, the LPAS adopted out three cats with another five going to rescue groups. With this said, LPAS is already planning to host another adoption event on Saturday, March 7, where the shelter will be open from 8 a.m. to noon for adoptions as well as spay and neuter sign-ups. According to LPAS Manager, Hilary Knight, seven people signed-up for Lafourche Parish’s Spay/Neuter Program on Feb. 7. Similar to the recently held event, Knight said she’s looking for volunteers to help assist her at the shelter on March 7. “Five years later, Gulf restoration has not truly begun. If BP really wants Americans to believe it is sincere, it should pay the fines it owes, and fund the restoration the Gulf so badly needs, said Muth. An overwhelming majority of Americans polled in all parts of the country said they believed BP should pay the maximum fines, even after hearing BP’s claims of what the company has already spent on “spill-related costs thus far. (This is according to the results of the independent survey conducted by the polling company, inc./WomanTrend.) “Americans aren’t fooled by BP’s misleading advertising campaigns and five years of legal shenanigans to drag out this court case, said Douglas Meffert, executive director and vice president of Audubon

Louisiana. “BP claims it wants to ‘make it right.’ If that is true, the first step is to start accepting responsibility for the damage it caused the wetlands, people and wildlife of the Gulf Coast and pay the maximum fines. “If BP wants anyone other than themselves to agree that they ‘made it right,’ they can step out of the shadow of lawyers, quit spinning and arguing, and just accept full responsibility, said Steve Cochran, director of Environmental Defense Fund’s Mississippi River Delta Restoration program. “The sooner that happens, the sooner real resources can be put to work restoring the Gulf. And in this anniversary year of one of the worst oil spills in American history, that would be a great thing for the Gulf and for BP.

PRAYERS
THE MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention here). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it, then in your own merciful eyes. It will become your favor not mine. Amen Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail. K.C.G. _________________________ PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going to battle. Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves shall never die a sudden death or be drowned or shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail so be sure you really want what you ask. Amen _________________________

out before you put it on a form at the doctor’s office. See if a health care provider might just accept the last four digits instead. These numbers can help fraudsters create fraudulent credit lines or tax returns, among other things. 2 — Don’t ignore insurance statements: Read or at least glance at the “Explanation of Benefits” your insurer sends you to explain recent claims. If someone is making fraudulent health claims using your account, you may spot them there first. 3 — Limit public Wi-Fi use: Don’t enter passwords online if you are using an open or public Wi-Fi network. Avoid looking at sensitive information like bank accounts too. Save that for networks that require a passcode. 4 — Strengthen passwords: The longer, the better because hackers can use software to crack a password that is less than eight characters in a few seconds. Avoid words or phrases that can be found in the dictionary or easy identifiers like the name of your child. Don’t use the same password for multiple accounts.

Perfect Sales Pitch
Airman Jones was assigned to the induction center, where he advised new recruits about their government benefits. He also sold them their optional GI insurance. It wasn’t long before Captain Smith noticed that Airman Jones had almost a 100% record for insurance sales. This had never happened before. Rather than ask, the Captain did a “random walk” and stood in the back of the room and listened to Jones’s sales pitch.
The captain listened quietly as Jones explained the basics of the GI Insurance to the new recruits. Jones then said, “If you have GI Insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don’t have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6,000. Now,” he concluded, “which bunch do you think they are going to send into battle first?”
