Early voting starts Saturday for presidential primary

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana presidential preference primary for Republicans and Democrats is March 5, but early voting began Saturday and runs through Feb. 27. Secretary of State Tom Schedler said in a news release that voters can cast early ballots daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for Sunday. Only voters who are registered to one of the two political parties will be able to vote for their party’s nominee, because, unlike most elections in Louisiana, the presidential primary is a closed primary. The Democratic Party and the GOP will also have closed state central committee and parish executive committee elections. Those who aren’t party affiliated may still have local elections to vote in. In the Tenth Ward, voters will choose a new member to serve on the Greater Lafourche Port Commission board, a seat vacated last fall by Donald Vizier due to health reasons. Running for the seat are Rodney Gisclair, Sr., RCut Off, Jimmy “T -Jim” Lafont, R-Cut Off, and Vhores “T -Voe” Trosclair, R-Galliano. Voters in Parish Council District 5 will also elect a new councilman. Voters there will decide between Mark Atzenhoffer, James Honore’ Bourgeois, and Holly “Scooter” LeBouef.

Out with the old, in with the new

Contractors tear down the old East Larose fire station to make way for a new state-of-the-art 3500-square-foot fire station.

Area’s oldest fire station to be replaced with state-of-the-art building

In 1948, a group gathered together under the realization that Larose needed a fire station and fire truck to better serve the area. A crew of men volunteered to take on the daunting task and the Larose Fire Department was born. Soon thereafter, property was purchased and a two-story building was constructed at 12595 East Main Street in Larose, alongside East 6th Street. The building housed one fire engine and the equipment needed for the volunteers to fight fires in the Larose area. In 1959 the Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 (LPFD3) was formed and took ownership of all fire department properties in the district’s boundaries, which spans from 2 miles north of the Intracoastal Canal south to the Grand Isle border and also includes the Lafourche section of Hwy. 24. District 3 covers the largest area in Lafourche, roughly half of the Parish. Now, more than 65 years after its construction, the Larose Fire Dept. building has been demolished to make way for a new state-of-the-art 3,500 sq. ft. fire station, which will house LPFD3 personnel 24/7. “It’s hard seeing something that has been a local landmark for so many years being destroyed, but it has become inadequate compared

to modern standards. The only fire truck that fit in the old building is one from 1982. The height of the building was about six feet too short for newer fire trucks,” said LPFD3 Asst. Fire Chief Kully Griffin. The new firehouse is expected to open in late October or early November, barring any major situations that may hamper progress. It will have a housing unit for the four on-duty firemen and a large garage that will house a ladder truck and a pump truck as well as equipment needed for any given situation. “It’s really going to be a beautiful building. We tried to tie in some of the old style with more contemporary features that will work for modern-day fire equipment,” said Fire Chief Freddie Guidry. Griffin along with Fire Chief Freddie Guidry and Batallion 1 Fire Chief Jim Montez stood together overlooking the demolition on Tuesday as they recalled various fires and tragedies that stood out in their combined 89 years of experience. All three of the men started out as volunteers for the fire department and later made it a career. The trio agreed that the amount of volunteers in Fire District 3 are a huge part of what helps to cut costs as well as to make the department as successful as it is today. See Fire Station Page 3-A

The South Lafourche Levee District (SLLD) voted unanimously on Monday to become a partner in a project to protect and restore marsh between Catfish Lake in Golden Meadow and the levee district’s adjacent protection levee. The Bayou Monnaie Marsh Terraces Project, Phase II, will construct marsh “terraces” or “sediment traps” on 541 acres, helping to protect the levee from storm wave action and increase waterfowl and fish habitat. The terraces are a series of strips of parallel and adjacent land which are built in open water. The angled and zigzagging terraces also form a wave buffer during storms. The terraces will ultimately encourage the growth of land between them in the hope of building new marsh in a watery area. “Approximately 75 percent of the marsh vegetation in the Bayou Monnaie area has died,” said Mike Carloss, Ducks Unlimited’s manager of conservation programs, in a recent announcement of the project. Sciatica

& Chiropractic

Sciatica is defined as a severe pain in the leg caused from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

One of the most common causes of sciatic leg pain is the “Vertebral Subluxation Complex. It can be accompanied by bulging or herniated discs which separate each spinal bone. This can irritate or put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spinal cord. The result can be an intense pain, burning, numbness or tingling in either or both legs.

The chiropractic approach is to use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the irritation from the spinal structures. These chiropractic “adjustments are quite effective in reducing nerve compression and its associated symptoms.

The loss, he said, has turned the area into an open, salty lake of little value in storm surge protection. One million dollars in grant funding from the North American Wetlands Foundation (NAWCA) was procured by Ducks Unlimited to start the project. Private partners such as ConocoPhillips, Louisiana Land and Exploration Company LLC, Ducks Unlimited, the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, Lafourche Parish Government, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and now SLLD, will match the initial funding with $2.3 million of their own dollars. SLLD voted on Monday to give $100,000 toward the project. Similar projects in east Golden Meadow and in Terrebonne Parish have been very successful, says Carloss. SLLD General Manager Windell Curole said the parish has the permit in hand to start the project. The grant, he said will be submitted later in February, with approval probably in late 2016. A similar project is located in the northwestern corner of Little Vermilion Bay at its intersection with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. The project area encompasses 964 acres of shallow bay bottom

Fire Station From 1-A

“There are so many different situations that our firefighters are involved in and trained for; it’s much more than just putting out fires. Last year we took 770 calls. That averages to two emergency calls each day, said Guidry. Members of LPFD3, both volunteers and paid employees, undergo 600700 hours of training each year in order to be certified and prepared for just about any situation. The training even extends to office staff, dispatchers and the mechanics that maintain the 40 vehicles owned by the district. Recently, one of the dispatchers received a call for help and walked the caller through the steps to deliver a baby at home. A few weeks ago, a man got into a head-on collision and went over the elevated Leeville overpass into icy waters during the early morning hours. LPFD3 were the only emergency service in the area equipped with the tools to quickly extract the man from the water and save his life. “We had equipment designed specifically for us by a company in Canada which can be attached to a rescue truck, brought to an overpass then attached to the side of the bridge so one of our rescuers can go over and extract the person from the water and bring him up to safety in a matter of minutes, said Griffin. “The state said that no one would ever go over the rails but we knew it would eventually happen and were prepared for when it did. That man is alive today due to the training and quick thinking of our men, he continued. Their acts of bravado go far beyond dashing into a burning building to save lives. They also help with fire prevention and have installed free smoke detectors in more than 1000 residences in their district. In fact, LPFD3 is second only to New Orleans Fire Dept. for the amount of detectors installed in their district. They assist with automobile accidents and are the only rescuers trained to use the Jaws of Life equipment. They are the official HazMat team when needed for spills or meth lab deconstruction. Traditionally, they never turn down any type of emergency except for domestic violence situations and shootings, but once the scene is cleared by police officers, they are willing to assist where needed. “Training is the key to it all, said Montez. “What it always comes down to is the better trained you are the easier you can deal with any situation. There’s no replacement for experience. The men recalled situations that were tough for them, such as one many years ago that resulted in the death of six children. Another moment that stood out in recent years was when Frank’s Supermarket in Golden Meadow went up in flames. The group spoke

about how intense the fire was and how they were amazed at how well their firefighters worked together tirelessly to put it out. For Chief Guidry, seeing how the group operated after Hurricane Katrina is what stands out the most as far as proving that LPFD3 is a brotherhood. “There were only 10 of us here, because of the mandatory evacuation status, and we were answering 12 emergency calls a day for 10 days straight, he said. “Our volunteer firefighters were itching to get back in the parish to help us out. I’ll never forget that. Future plans include the possibility of a firehouse on the Bourg-Larose highway for emergencies in that area as well as eventually moving the smaller, older Galliano station closer to the airport. For now, constant training and education is what’s on the menu. “We have huge companies down here and an even more sobering thought is what would happen if a huge fire broke out in LOOP or Port Fourchon? We are trained to and will continue training so we can handle those scenarios, even though we hope we never have to, said Griffin. Each year the LPFD3 holds an open house in the fall so people can view their equipment, meet personnel and learn about fire prevention. In the last few years, anywhere from 600 – 1200 people have attended the open houses. “We’re here to keep residents in our district safe. We hold a strong sense of community and willingness to help, plus running into a burning building and saving lives is a feeling like no other, said Guidry. For more information about the Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 and the programs they offer, visit www.lpfd3.com or call Fire Central at 985-632-8068.

Lady Tarpons roll into Second Round of 4A Playoffs Sunday, February 21, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

Gazette Sports Reports

After losing to Ellender in the District Championship Playoff Game, South Lafourche girls’ basketball coach Rainie Terrebonne promised fans that the setback wouldn’t affect her team in the opening round of the Class 4A State Playoffs. The coach was right. The Lady Tarpons were firing on all cylinders on Thursday night against West Ouachita in the Round of 32 in Class 4A. South Lafourche started strong and controlled the game from start-to-finish, using balanced scoring and dominant defense to secure a 73-45 win. Sophomore forward Victorianna Nelson led all scorers with 20 points. Fellow sophomore Traya Bruce had 18 for the Lady Tarpons, who played before a slam-packed home crowd on Thursday night. “We played well tonight, Terrebonne said after the victory. “We didn’t overlook this game. We watched film and studied what they did throughout the week. We changed up a couple of things and executed our game plan really well, and we’re happy to be going onto the next round. For South Lafourche, it was a dominant attack from its post players that won the game – both offensively and defensively. On the offensive end, Nelson was an absolute monster. She scored both inside and outside, showcasing an array of post moves and also a consistent 17-foot baseline jumper that was lethal on Thursday night. Nelson said she was hot in warmups, and carried it into the game. The sophomore scored 14

3-A

points in the first half, which enabled the Lady Tarpons to lead 16-10 after the first quarter and 34-18 at halftime. “I just felt good, Nelson said. “It’s the playoffs. We knew what was at stake. I was shooting it with confidence, and I was able to make a bunch of them. On the defensive end, Nelson was a huge rebounding force, but Terrebonne highly commended the play of senior post Breigh Cheramie – a player she called an unsung hero in the win. The Lady Tarpons senior locked horns with alleverything Lady Chiefs post player Trinity Griffin throughout the night, and helped keep her out of rhythm. South Lafourche eventually fouled Griffin out of the game in the fourth quarter. See Lady Tarpons Page 8-A

What a Life!

Sunday, February 21, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd

Seniors continue their suggestions for living a full life Last week, I passed on twelve suggestions given by seniors on how to be fully alive in our senior years. Today’s article will complete that listing. 13. Try to accept all invitations even if you don’t feel like it – baptisms, confirmations, graduations, birthdays, weddings, conferences, whatever. Try to go. It’s good to get out of the house, meet people you haven’t seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). Still, don’t get upset when you’re not invited. Resources limit some events, and not all family members can be invited. The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, plays, concerts, or just go walk through a field. 14. Be a conversationalist. Talk less and listen more. Some people go on and on about the past, not caring if their listeners are really interested. That’s a great way of reducing their desire to speak with you.

Listen first and answer questions, but don’t go off into long stories unless asked to. Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you need to. Try to accept situations as they are. Everyone is going through the same things, and people have a low tolerance for hearing complaints. Always find some very positive things to say. 15. Pain and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of the cycle of life we’re all going through. Try to minimize them in your mind. They are not who you are; they are something that life added to you. If they become your entire focus, you lose sight of the person you used to be. 16. If you’ve been offended by someone – forgive them. If you’ve offended someone – say you are sorry. Don’t drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn’t matter who was right. Someone once said, “Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Don’t take that poison. Forgive, forget and move on with life. 17. If you have a strong faith and belief in God, savor it. Don’t waste your time trying to convince others. They have to make their own choices no matter what you tell them. Live your faith and set an example. Live true to your beliefs by letting your light shine and the joy you show with your life may persuade them to follow your lead. 18. Laugh. Laugh a lot. Laugh at everything. Remember that you are a lucky one. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many people never get to this age, never get to experience a full life, but you did. So what’s not to laugh about? Find the humor in your situation. 19. Take no notice of what others say about you

and even less notice of what they might be thinking. You should have pride in yourself and what you’ve achieved. Let them talk and don’t worry. They have no idea about your history, your memories and the life you’ve lived so far. There’s still much to be written, so get busy writing and don’t waste time thinking about what others might think. Now is the time to be at rest, at peace and extremely happy! 20. Remember: “Life is

too short to drink bad wine.” St. Paul of the Cross once said, “Let all creation help you to praise God. Give yourself the rest you need. “When you are walking alone, listen to the sermon preached to you by the flowers, the trees, the shrubs, the sky, the sun and the whole world. Notice how they preach to you a sermon full of love, of praise of God, and how they invite you to proclaim the greatness of the one who has given them being.”

Casino managers accused of theft at Chitimacha Tribe casino

CHARENTON, La. (AP) — State police say the general

manager and chief financial officer of the Chitimacha Tribe’s casino in St. Mary Parish have been arrested on charges of theft after an investigation found they allegedly manipulated the casino’s personnel database. State police say the Chitimacha Tribe did an internal investigation at its Cypress Bayou Casino and alerted investigators in January about a possible crime committed by senior management at the casino. Troopers say Anthony Patrone, the general manager, and Monte Spivey, the chief financial officer, were arrested Wednesday on charges of felony theft, computer fraud and obstruction of justice. Investigators say the pair made it appear that a former inactive employee was active and qualified for an annual bonus of $5,700 dollars. Investigators say the two managers then concealed the money transfer. _______________

Bank regulations

Obama walks into a bank and says to the teller, “Good morning, would you cash this check for me”? “It would be my pleasure, sir,” she replies. “Could you please show me your ID?” Obama says, “Sorry, I didn’t think I needed to bring it with me, after all I am the President!” The teller responds by saying, “Yes sir, I know who you are but with all the government regulations I need that ID. There is another way we can handle it. A similar situation once happened when Tiger Woods came into the bank without ID. To prove he was Tiger Woods he pulled out his putting iron and made a beautiful shot across the bank lobby into a cup. With that shot we knew him to be Tiger Woods and we cashed his check. So, Mr. President, what can you do to prove that you are who you say you are?” Obama stood there thinking, and thinking and

finally says, “Honestly, nothing comes to mind. I can’t think of a single thing I can do.” The teller turns to him and says, “Great! Will that be large or small bills, Mr. President?”

No more paper checks for unemployment benefits

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana residents receiving unemployment benefits will no longer get paper checks. The Louisiana Workforce Commission says it will discontinue distributing unemployment insurance benefits by paper checks in March. The LWC has issued paper checks since October when JPMorgan Chase stopped providing debit cards for Louisiana state government purposes. The state of Louisiana has since negotiated a new contract with U.S. Bank to provide debit cards for unemployment claimants.

Sunday, February 21, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

Unemployment recipients can either receive benefits through direct-deposit or a prepaid card. The paper check-option for new unemployment claims will end March 13. Claimants who currently receive benefits through paper checks can opt into direct-deposit by updating their payment preferences in their HiRE accounts by March 13. Those who take no action will be automatically transitioned onto a prepaid card. _______________

Waitress accused of spiking co-worker’s drink with meth

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A waitress has been arrested on charges that she spiked a co-worker’s drink with methamphetamine during their late-night shift at a Waffle House in northern Georgia. Dawson County sheriff’s investigators spent nearly two months collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses before they

7-A

arrested 43-year-old Sonserea Dawn Evans last week, said Capt. Tony Wooten, the sheriff’s spokesman. She remained jailed Thursday on charges of illegal drug possession and aggravated battery. Wooten declined to name Evans’ 37-year-old co-worker, but said the man is still battling to recover from a drug overdose that left him critically ill for weeks after he collapsed Dec. 23 at the restaurant about 50 miles north of Atlanta. Waffle House’s corporate office shared restaurant surveillance video with investigators, which Wooten said showed Evans picking up the co-worker’s cup when he stepped outside for a break, then taking the cup toward the bathroom. She returned and set the drink down before her co-worker came back inside. The video showed the man drink from the cup, Wooten said, and “within an hour, he’s getting medical attention.”

Tax credit for working poor targeted in legislative debate 8-A

Sunday, February 21, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lawmakers clashed Thursday over a Louisiana tax credit for the working poor and whether it should be scrapped or expanded amid the state’s deep financial problems. At issue in the House Ways and Means Committee were competing bills about Louisiana’s Earned Income Tax Credit, aimed at working people with low to moderate incomes. Rep. Tony Bacala, RPrairieville, is proposing to end the state tax credit to save Louisiana $47 million a year, to help offset a massive state budget gap. He said that could save some higher education programs and health care services

from deep cuts. “I think it has some merit, except we’re in a budget crisis,” Bacala said of the tax break. He said the state has to make tough choices about what it can afford: “No matter what decision we make, it’s going to pinch people.” But he ran into pushback from advocacy groups and lawmakers who say the tax credit helps the working poor afford basic life expenses. Rep. Walt Leger, D-New Orleans, wants to double the credit, saying it could help offset the impact of a 1-cent sales tax hike

sought by Gov. John Bel Edwards to help rebalance the state budget. “If we’re struggling, then so are families in the state of Louisiana,” Leger said. “Programs like this help to prop them up in a difficult time.” Louisiana faces a budget gap of $850 million to $950 million this year, which must be closed by June 30. Edwards has asked lawmakers gathered in a special session to raise taxes to help offset part of the shortfall. On the books since 2007, the Earned Income Tax Credit piggybacks off a similar federal program, allowing families to receive a state tax credit that equals 3.5 percent of the federal credit. Twenty-nine percent of all tax filers in

Louisiana claimed the credit last year, receiving an average $96.93, according to the Louisiana Budget Project, which advocates for poor and moderate-income families. Bacala said only half of states offer similar programs, and he noted Louisiana gives money to people above their state tax liability. “This is not an income tax return. This is an extra

check,” he said. Supporters of Leger’s bill to double the credit said the program allows working people to keep more money to pay their bills and spend in the economy. They said studies show children in families who receive the tax break perform better in school, making them more likely to become taxpaying citizens themselves. “It is one of the very

best tools available for fighting poverty,” said Jan Moller, director of the Louisiana Budget Project. The House committee didn’t make a decision on either bill Thursday. Lawmakers on the panel will consider the whole package of tax proposals together after reviewing all the bills. ___

Lady Tarpons From 1-A

Terrebonne said she also applauded posts Megan Danos and Kacey Rousse for taking turns of Griffin. “We wanted to get under her skin and really aggravate her,” Terrebonne said. “And I think if anyone watched the game, they can see that we did exactly that. We mixed and matched and kept fresh ladies running at her, and I think it took its toll before the end of the game.” In the second half, South Lafourche stretched its lead into the 20s for the first time, using a totalteam effort in the third quarter put the game on ice. A total of six Lady Tarpons scored in the 21point third quarter, including five a piece from both Brinkey Callais and Bruce, four a piece from Cheramie and Nelson, two from Ramey Messer and one from Rousse. South Lafourche extended its lead from 16 points at halftime to 55-33 after the third. The fourth never got much closer, as a combination of Lady Tarpons reserves put the game on ice and punched the team’s ticket into the next round. With the victory, the Lady Tarpons will move to the Sweet 16 where they will travel and take on No. 2 St. Michael on Monday night at 6 p.m. St. Michael beat Grant 60-33 in the opening round on Thursday night. Terrebonne said she knows it will be a challenge, but she thinks her team will be ready. Nelson thinks so, too. The Lady Tarpons fell in the second round of the playoffs two years in a row, and they desperately don’t want that feeling again this time around. “We remember,” Nelson said with a smile when asked about last year’s postseason defeat. “We think we can better handle it this time around.” For those looking to travel from the Bayou to Baton Rouge for Monday’s matchup, the school is located at 17521 Monitor Avenue in Baton Rouge.
