Parish boat launches to see improvements

Obama sends record $4 trillion spending plan to Congress

By: Doug Cheramie, II Contributing Writer

MARTIN CRUTSINGER AP Economics Writer

Lafourche Parish is set to spend some $400,000 to improve several of the boat launches in the area. According to Reggie Bagala, who serves as Community Services Director for the parish, approximately $150,000 will be spent to upgrade the Theriot Boat Launch. “At the Theriot launch, a slip will be added as well as covering the wooden surface of the launch with concrete,” Bagala said. In addition, limestone will be placed in the parking areas and work will also be done to repair damaged bulkheads. In Kraemer, the Larousse Boat Launch is also set to receive some $100,000 in improvements with a new slip being built as well as portions of the parking lot will be covered with concrete. This will help to make the ramp more accessible in inclement weather. See Launches Page 6-A

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama sent Congress a record $4 trillion budget Monday that would boost taxes on higher-income Americans and corporations, pushing past tight federal spending caps to fund an ambitious public works program and provide middle-class tax relief. Obama’s budget, which will set off months of wrangling in Congress, proposes spending $4 trillion — $3.999 trillion before rounding — in the 2016 budget year that begins Oct. 1. That’s a 6.4 percent increase over estimated spending this year, projecting that the deficit will decline to $474 billion. In a message accompanying the massive budget books, Obama said his proposals are “practical, not partisan.” But even before the books were delivered, Republicans found plenty to criticize in tax hikes totaling $2 trillion. The GOP will respond this spring with a balancedbudget outline that promises to ease the burdens of the national debt on future generations, curb the explosive growth of expensive benefit programs and reform the loophole-cluttered tax code. In a lengthy run-up to Monday’s budget release, the administration highlighted a number of its proposals, including $320 billion in increased taxes on the wealthy and corporations that would be used to pay for expanded middle class tax breaks. The budget documents reveal that all the tax increases will total $2 trillion, including a number of proposals Obama has made before to limit deductions the See Obama Page 7-A

Stone Wall Crossfit – Working together to reach fitness goals

In the biblical story of Nehemiah, enemies destroyed the walls surrounding Jerusalem. Nehemiah realized that not one person alone could take on the great task of rebuilding the stone wall; but, if the people of Jerusalem worked together, they could complete the task and keep their enemies at bay. “We relate to the story of Nehemiah in a sense that if we work together as a team, we can build up our bodies to be fit and healthy,” Gavin Guidry, coowner of Stone Wall Crossfit said. “It’s hard to do it alone; for some people, it’s impossible. But we can work together, encourage one another and conquer our health and fitness problems.” During a workout last year, Mike Martin realized that his regular routine was getting him nowhere. He contacted Gavin Guidry, a local Crossfit trainer, and asked if he could give him a more intense workout. “After just an hour with Gavin, I realized how

much more satisfying Crossfit is compared to what I had been doing at the gym. It helped having someone to coach me rather than just doing what I thought was a good workout,” Mike said. See Crossfit Page 6-A

“In a Small Pond EXIT THE CAJUN By Leroy Martin

May 8, 1972 was a hot spring day in Baton Rouge. Vin Bruce and the Acadians were playing for the first inauguration of Edwin W. Edwards as Governor of Louisiana. After our first set, “Happy Fat and the RayneBo Ramblers came on playing a familiar song, “Vieux Hobo. Vin said, “That’s my song, don’t I get paid? I replied, “No! You recorded it but I wrote it, so I’m due 3 cents if a B.M.I. scout hears it. “I want half, he said, faking anger. “O.K., I’ll write you a check, but it will put you in a higher tax bracket. Just then E.J. Gremillion walked up with a bottle. Vin and I had realized too late that Edwards was a tee tottler so no hard liquor was being served. Seeing us eye the bottle, he asked, “Want a drink? I took a sip, Vin took a bigger sip and passed it back to E.J. empty and dry as the Sahara Desert. “I had hoped it would last all day, but I hadn’t expected to meet you two, he laughed. It had to last us all day, until the first 7-11 when the day was done. All in all, it was a pleasant, if thirsty, afternoon, but with a Cajun in the Capitol, we were on a roll. I met Edwards in 1971 when he was campaigning in Thibodaux. As Chief Deputy to Assessor Hubert Robichaux I invited him in. As he was charming the female employees, I asked him, “Congressman, you’re solid here, but I lost three times with a South Louisiana candidate (Chep Morrison), so what are your chances? “Leroy, he said, “with my coalition of Cajuns and blacks, I can’t lose. Those were not the words he used, and I visibly flinched as he laughed and left with all votes assured. We would meet again. During his 16 years in office he spoke many times to the assessors, always welcomed, especially for his humor. Once, as president of our association, I met him with a committee opposing a bill exempting certain property. As I handed him details of potential tax losses, his aide carefully fitted him with glasses. He read and pushed it back and his aide just as carefully removed the glasses without Edwards

ever have to touch them. “Gentlemen, he said “Your job is assessing anything not exempted by the Legislature, so if they exempt everything except the outhouses, assess them! That’s your job and the House and Senate do theirs! Now, let’s eat! We left full but disappointed, however impressed at his ability to understand and act on an issue on the spot. One of his good points. I had been assessor since 1983, when in 1991, my cousin called requesting I emcee the last rally of his last run for governor, to be held in Galliano. He had become so unpopular that a reporter wrote, “the only way Edwards can win is if his opponent is Adolph Hitler. Not quiet, but to save Louisiana from embarrassment we wanted Edwards to win. His opponent, David Duke was not an option. There was even a bumper

sticker that read: “Vote For The Crook! It’s Important. I didn’t display it, but I obeyed it. I was Master of Ceremonies for his last rally of his last hurrah of his last winning election, and the end of his sixteen-year romance with the Cajun voters. He did some good things for our area and the state, but that will always be overshadowed by his notoriety. It’s ironic that the thrill of gambling, which brought him some of his highest highs, was the catalyst that brought him his lowest low. Edward W. Edwards had the intelligence, charisma, wit and ability that might have made him the greatest governor Louisiana ever had, but as John Greenleaf Whittier once wrote, “Of all the

words of tongue or pen, the saddest are ‌ it might have been.â€? So it was with Edwards but ‌ what might it have been? To quote Bob Dylan, “The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind! BYE NOW! Comments are welcomed at: leroymartin1929@gmail.com

Tarpon boys, girls enjoy winning weeks Gazette Sports Reports

With a thin depth chart depleted with injury and other issues, the South Lafourche boys’ basketball team knows that it has to win games with effort, hustle and execution. They did all three on last Tuesday night, upsetting Hahnville by 11 points – the team’s first district win of the season. But they did none of the above three nights later, falling for a second time this season to East St. John. The past week was a mixed bag for the Tarpon boys, who won 47-36 against Hahnville before falling 67-37 to the districtleading Wildcats at home last Friday. South Lafourche coach Brian Callais said he’s not disappointed in the loss itself – touting that East St. John is a great team. But the coach said he is displeased in the approach his team took to the game. “There was no effort,” Callais said. “We had no energy. It’s not that we lost – it’s how we played. I’m disappointed in the fact that we didn’t give our best effort

tonight.” Against the Wildcats, the outcome wasn’t in doubt for most of the game. East St. John stormed out of the gates, scoring the first seven points to grab hold of the lead. From there, they took a 13-4 lead into the second quarter – an advantaged that blossomed to 31-18 at halftime. In the third quarter, South Lafourche held firm, bringing the game to the fourth quarter with East St. John ahead 47-33. But in the fourth, the Tarpons faltered and the Wildcats sprinted to victory. Kobe Chouest led South Lafourche with 11 points in the game. In Tuesday night’s game, a slow finish wasn’t a factor for the Tarpons, who cruised past Hahnville. After a close first half, South Lafourche used a huge third quarter spurt to put the game away for good. Callais said he hopes to see more games like that from his team in the future. “We can compete when we play hard and execute,” Callais said. “I’ve been

proud of our effort a lot of this season, but on Friday night, we had no energy and were flat.” While Callais and his boys aim to find a consistent motor, the Lady Tarpons continued their revenge tour this past week. For the second-straight week, South Lafourche beat a team it had lost to earlier in district play, swamping East St. John 52-38 on Friday night. The victory avenges South Lafourche’s 50-48 overtime loss at the hands of the Lady Wildcats. This second time around, it was never very close. The Lady Tarpons scored the first nine points of the game and consistently held a comfortable 15-20 point lead. Junior guard Caroline Guilbeau led all scorers with 15 points in the while, which improved South Lafourche to 21-5 on the season. Freshman Traya Bruce added 11. The Lady Tarpons’ blowout was the team’s second of the week. South Lafourche comfortably defeated Hahnville 46-21 last Tuesday night. With the busy week, South Lafourche will now take its talents to the road. Both Tarpons teams hosted Terrebonne last night with no score available at presstime. They will both travel to Central Lafourche on Friday for more district action. ___

For the second time this district season, the Central Lafourche boys’ basketball team was beaten at home. The Trojans had their five-game winning streak snapped on Friday night when they lost 61-54 to H.L. Bourgeois in Mathews. The loss drops Central Lafourche to 18-5 on the season and 6-2 in district play – one game out of first place.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game going in,” Central Lafourche coach Mark Sanders said. “We told them before the game that they were going to be up for the challenge, and they were. Unfortunately, they made more things happen than we did and we paid the penalty.” The Braves endured a slow start to conquer the win. Central Lafourche held an early first quarter lead – an advantage that vanished when the Braves closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 17-12 lead. That lead ballooned to nine in the second quarter when the Braves used balanced scoring to go into the lockers ahead 29-20. In the final half, Central Lafourche cut the lead to as little as four, but every run they mustered, H.L. Bourgeois answered to secure the win. “That was the best we’ve competed all season,” Braves coach Andrew Caillouet said. “We knew we had it in us – we just needed to compete and not take no for an answer this time.” Central Lafourche’s win was a bad ending to a week that started with a 54-48 win over Thibodaux. The loss sends the Trojans into a huge week on a bad note. Central Lafourche played East St. John on Tuesday with no score available at press-time – a game that likely will decide the district championship. They host South Lafourche on Friday. While the Trojans’ boys hope to upset the Wildcats to win district, the Lady Trojans girls are still searching for answers. Central Lafourche’s long losing streak extended this past week with the team losing 46-36 to Thibodaux and 38-26 to H.L. Bourgeois.

Pelicans snap Hawks’ 19-game winning streak BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Anthony Davis leaped toward the basket, rising over a pair of Atlanta Hawks to corral an offensive rebound with his right hand and ferociously slam the ball through the hoop in one continuous motion. That first-half play provided clear signs that Davis’ recent left groin strain wasn’t bothering him and that Atlanta’s 19-game winning streak was under threat. Davis finished with 29 points and 13 rebounds, and the Pelicans handed the Hawks only their third loss in 36 games, 115-100 on Monday night. The Pelicans won for the sixth time in seven games. That recent run of good form has included victories over other contending squads, such as Dallas and the Los Angeles Clippers, and has pulled the Pelicans (26-22) within a game of Phoenix (28-22) for eighth place in the Western Conference. Eric Gordon scored 20 points for New Orleans, while Tyreke Evans scored 15 points and tied a season high with 12 assists for the fourth time in five games. Omer Asik grabbed 17 rebounds for New Orleans, which outrebounded Atlanta 52-32. Davis grabbed eight of his rebounds on the offensive end. Paul Millsap scored 15 points and Kyle Korver 12 for Atlanta. The Pelicans will host the the Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday night.

Launches From 1-A

Some $50,000 is also expected to be spent at the boat launch in Golden Meadow by adding two piers for boats to tie up to once they have launched. “Now there is lots of congestion after boats launch as others want to launch immediately after. Hopefully, the installation of two piers for boats to tie up while the owners park their vehicles will remedy this problem,” Bagala said. He also noted that the Golden Meadow launch work is expected to be done with in house parish employees rather than being contracted out. The parish has also set aside funding and is considering a purchase of a tract of land near the Taylor Boat Launch in Chackbay for further parking and expansion there, however Bagala said that that would be a future consideration. These projects are expected to receive Council approval in February with bids for the work going out soon after. The boat launches are free to use for the public.

Crossfit

From 1-A

Gavin, a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army and currently an Army National Guardsman, has been training through the Crossfit program for five years. He and Mike decided to team up and open Stone Wall Crossfit in Larose. The doors officially opened in September of 2013 and the clientele has grown exponentially since. So what is Crossfit? Crossfit is strength and conditioning program. Although it started out as a high-intensity training program for athletes and military and police units, it has developed a following by people who want to get healthier, lose weight and stay in shape. The Crossfit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any individual regardless of experience. It uses the same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease as well as cage fighters. Trainers scale load and intensity of workouts but don’t change the overall program, crossfit.com says. How do regular people have a chance at making it in a program that was originally for athletes and military units? At Stone Wall Crossfit, co-owners Gavin Guidry and Mike Martin, along with three other coaches and two coaches in training, instruct classes in order to ensure that each attendee is doing their routine efficiently and safely with the right amount push for each person’s physical abilities. Do members have to be in top shape to do Crossfit? No! People of all walks of life and in greatly varying physical conditions have

joined Stone Wall Crossfit. Members range in age from toddlers to people well into their 60s. The majority of clientele at Stone Wall Crossfit are women who are 30 years or older. “Each exercise is designed so that people of different levels can all participate in one routine. Some people can do squats lifting 400 pounds while others can only squat while holding onto bars in order to help them go back to a standing position,” Mike said. Mike’s wife, Priscilla, underwent training to become a Crossfit Kids coach. Stone Wall Crossfit now hosts classes for youth ranging from 3 to 15 years of age. The classes are broken down for 3-5 year olds, 6-9 year olds and 10 – 15 year olds. The younger children do workouts similar to gymnastics and obstacle courses while the older youth do workouts that mimic the adult Crossfit program but are tweaked for their abilities. All three age groups focus on fun, safety and healthy movements to keep their bodies in shape. All Crossfit routines are based on functional movements that carry into every

day life. “We have to squat to sit on a toilet. We have to lift carrying milk in the grocery store. We have to push or pull to close and open doors. If you can do that, you can do Crossfit,” Gavin said. Members at Stone Wall Crossfit agree that the community and family feel are major factors in keeping them motivated. “Everyone is trying to become better - either to be healthier or to compete as an athlete. The common goal is to make each person more fit. We’re a family here

and the no one needs to feel embarrassed or ashamed if they aren’t able to do what others can. We just want people to be the best they can be,” Mike said. Stone Wall Crossfit also offers yoga classes, training for athletes - including high school and middle school teams and other programs. Gavin and Mike have proudly partnered with Josh Guidry of Gracie United Bayou Lafourche to offer Jiu Jitsu classes at Stone Wall Crossfit. “Don’t be afraid to try something new. We are here to help you reach your

health and wellness goals,” Gavin said. Anyone interested can attend a free one-day class. To find out more about Stone Wall Crossfit, you can visit their website www.stonewallcrossfit.com, look them up on Facebook, call Gavin Guidry at 910578-4818 or Mike Martin at 985-991-1122 or drop by the gym located at 13936 West Main St. in Larose (the strip mall where Frank’s in Larose was formerly located).

Obama

From 1-A

wealthy can take to reduce their tax bill. Wealthy people would only be able to take tax deductions at the 28 percent rate even if their income is taxed at 39.6 percent and would also see an increase in their maximum capital gains rate to 28 percent instead of 20 percent. A couple earning up to $120,000 a year would qualify for a new “second earner” tax credit of up to $500 as well as a maximum $3,000 child care credit for two children, triple the current credit of $1,000. Not all of Obama’s tax hikes would hit the wealthy. His budget also proposes to raise $95 billion over the next decade by hiking the tax on cigarettes from the current $1.01 per pack to $1.95. Obama’s spending plan would ease tight budget constraints imposed on the military and domestic programs back in 2011 when lawmakers were responding to the public outcry over deficits that were then topping $1 trillion a year. Obama’s budget calls these caps, known as sequestration, “mindless austerity.” The elimination of the budget caps this will boost spending by $74 billion — divided between the military and domestic programs — in 2016 and would result in a spending increase over the remaining six years the caps were to have been in place of $362 billion. In a budget agreement reached in late 2013, the budget caps were eased but not eliminated for 2014 and 2015 but are due to go back in force in 2016. The administration said the budget represented a strategy to strengthen the middle class and help “hard-working families get ahead in a time of relentless economic and technological change.” “This country’s better off than it was four years ago, but what we also know is that wages and incomes for middle class families are just now ticking up,” Obama said in an interview broadcast on Monday’s “Today Show” on NBC. “They haven’t been keeping pace over the last 30 years compared to, you know, corporate profits and what’s happening to folks in the very top.” Republicans, however, accused the president of seeking to revert to tax-andspend policies that will harm the economy while failing to do anything about the budget’s biggest problem — soaring spending on government benefit programs. Obama’s budget projects a deficit of $583 billion in 2015, up significantly from last year’s $485 billion imbalance. Obama’s budget plan never reaches balance over the next decade and projects the deficit would rise to $687 billion in 2025. The administration contends that various spending cuts and tax increases would trim the deficits by $1.8 trillion over the next decade, leaving the red ink at manageable levels. Congressional Republicans say the budgets they produce will achieve balance and will attack costly benefit program like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Obama, interviewed by NBC before the start of Sunday’s Super Bowl game, said he believed there were areas where he can work with Republicans, who for the first time in his presidency control both houses of Congress. “My job is not to trim

my sails and not tell the American people what we should be doing, pretending somehow we don’t need better roads, that we don’t need more affordable college,” Obama said. While Republicans were critical of the spending plan, Democrats endorsed the effort. “The president’s proposal would close a lot of the tax breaks that encourage corporations to move jobs and capital overseas and invest more of that in jobs and infrastructure here at home,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, the top Democrat

on the Budget panel. Obama’s budget emphasizes the same themes as his State of the Union address last month, when he challenged Congress to work with him on narrowing the income gap between the very wealthy and everyone else. Obama’s six-year $478 billion public works program would provide upgrades for the nation’s highways, bridges and transit systems, in an effort to tap into bipartisan support for spending on badly needed repairs. Half of that money

would come from a one-time mandatory tax on profits that U.S. companies have amassed overseas that would be set at 14 percent. Obama’s budget also called also is calling for a $60 billion program for free community college for an estimated 9 million students if all states participate. It also proposes expanding child care to more than 1.1 million additional children under the age of 4 by 2025 and seeks to implement universal pre-school. Obama also wants to require estates to pay capi-

Three men sought in Lockport armed robbery

Two arrested for home invasion, robbery in Thibodaux Two people have been arrested after a home invasion and robbery at a Thibodaux residence. Cody Matherne, 36, of Cut Off and Katie Hendrix, 34, of Grand Isle were arrested after admitting to their involvement in the crime. At 5:15 p.m. on Friday, January 30, deputies responded to a home invasion in the Thibodaux area. Upon arrival, a man and a woman, later identified as Katie Hendrix and Cody Matherne, had arrived at the residence dressed in dark clothing. They entered the residence without permission and began beating a woman inside the residence and using a stun gun on her as well. They eventually fled the residence with several items, including a laptop, cell phones, and cash. Through investigation, detectives located Hendrix and Matherne at a store in Galliano and they were transported to the South Lafourche Sub-station for questioning. Both admitted to their involvement in the crime, and detectives recovered some of the items taken from the incident. Hendrix and Matherne were

mal cruelty, property damage, drug possession, and traffic violations. He was also wanted for aggravated flight from an officer stemming from a December incident wherein he refused to comply with patrol deputies attempting a traffic stop, and eventually fled into a heavily wooded area. Deputies were unable to locate him at that time. Then on the night of January 27, Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force Agents proceeded to the Thibodaux area near the Bowie Fire Company station after obtaining intelligence on Matherne’s location. Upon arrival, agents discovered two other men, Justin Theriot and Ivan Galliano, 25, of Lockport, were also at that location. With the assistance of K-9 and patrol deputies, agents initially found Matherne hiding under a shed. Realizing he was discovered, Matherne jumped into Bayou Lafourche and swam across to the west bank of the bayou. He then climbed out of the bayou and fled on foot, but agents eventually took him into custody. He was charged with resisting an officer and booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on the 18 outstanding warrants. He remains in jail in lieu of $153,000 bond as set by Judge John. E. Leblanc. Meanwhile, Theriot was

found to have active warrants in Iberville Parish for theft and criminal trespassing, and he was taken into custody. He was initially transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux and transferred to Iberville parish on Wednesday afternoon. Galliano was found in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and he was issued a criminal summons for those charges. Late Wednesday night, agents learned Tyronne Cheramie was located in a casino in Galliano. Cheramie had two outstanding warrants for distribution of methamp- hetamine. Agents confirmed Cheramie’s location and he was taken into custody without incident. He was found in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a handgun. He was transported to the Detention Center where he was booked on the aforementioned warrants as well as possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance. He is being held in lieu of $91,000 bond as set by Judge Christopher J. Boudreaux and the warrants. He is also being held for Louisiana Probation and Parole.
